evolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru has ruled out stepping aside from her position amid intensifying calls for her to do so by the opposition over corruption allegations

at the National Youth Service.

Ms Waiguru who spoke on Citizen TV last night said she cannot step aside because the matters being investigated have nothing to do with her.

“The issue of stepping aside is dependent on whether or not an individual has been directly implicated in a corruption scandal, which I have not,” she said.

The minister instead said she is the whistle-

blower on the suspicious transactions being investigated.

aside just like the other ministers,” he added.

Ms Waiguru was speaking just hours after appearing before MPs to respond to the allegations.

However, the session with MPs turned into a noisy affair with those allied to the government blocking their colleagues from fielding questions, something Mr Odinga criticized.

“In as much as you support

the minister, and she is a very competent Cabinet Secretary by the way, the MPs did not do justice to her by refusing to let her answer to the allegations,” he said.

And Waiguru also said the matter has now been politcised and that “some people” she has rubbed the wrong way in the course of her work are behind the campaign to have her forced to step aside.

“In my line of work, one is bound

to rub some people the wrong way.

This is often the cause of these allegations,” she said.

NYS has been on the spotlight in recent weeks after allegations emerged of a scheme to steal some Sh826 in contract deals, something Ms Waiguru said was detected in time and is now being handled by investigators.

LEADERS ALLEGE SECURITY SABOTAGE IN MANDERA Mandera leaders now claim there is sabotage by security officers deployed in the region on matters security.

Led by Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow, they say security officers are doing little to prevent attacks in the area. The leaders were reacting to yesterday’s attack that claimed the lives of at least 14 quarry workers.

“The attack was less than three kilometers from a military camp, why didn’t they respond, some of the grenades landed into their camp, yet they couldn’t even bother,” Kerrow said.

He said the attack would have been massive were it not for the Kenya Police Reservists in the area who responded in a short time.

“Were it not for the KPR, we would be talking of something different, they acted in five minutes, just five minutes,” he said.

The leaders also accused the government of failing to implement their recommendations on how to improve security in the region.

Kerrow says after last month’s attack in Garissa University the leaders forwarded a 20-point

recommendation to the government on ways to improve security in the region.

“Out of the 20-point, the only thing we have seen done is the deployment of the regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh,” he said.

He blamed yesterday’s killings on poor decision making by the local security leaders saying if they had heeded to the calls of the people to secure the quarry workers, the attack could have been thwarted.

“When you fail to secure a group of people who are targets that is poor decision making” he said.

The militants in yesterday’s attacked targeted non-locals working at a quarry in Mandera.

Interior Cabinet Seceretary Joseph Nkaissery says there were no intelligence warnings on this latest massacre. He says they have now launched a security operation to hunt down the criminals behind the attack.

The operation to be led by Mohamud Saleh is zeroing in on collaborators of the attack according to Nkaissery.

Uhuru pledges continued support to young entrepreneurs The government will remain focused on creating an enabling environment for young entrepreneurs to achieve their aspirations, President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured.

He said the government acknowledges that facilitating young entrepreneurs is one way of creating wealth to dealing with some of the socio-economic challenges that the country faces.

“In my part, it is just a continued pledge that we will continue to do everything that we can to create an enabling environment for women, for our young people and for all Kenyans to be able to achieve their dreams,” President Kenyatta said.

He added: “We have the capacity to rapidly grow the economy of this country and you, the young people, are at the right place to do just that.”

The President made the remarks today

when he addressed a forum for young women entrepreneurs at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The forum was one of the precursors to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit that will be held in Nairobi later in the month.

The Head of State challenged young women entrepreneurs to believe in themselves and be committed to working hard, saying these are critical ingredients to success.

“On our part, we will continue to listen to you and see how we can address some of the challenges you face in conducting your businesses. You can count on my total support and that of my Government,” President Kenyatta told the young women entrepreneurs.

Responding to issues raised on the high cost of credit, the President said the Government is working with

the banking association to remove the bottlenecks that make banks loans unaffordable to most young entrepreneurs.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing challenges that are a barrier to entrepreneurship including scaling up the fight against corruption.

The President said he was impressed by the young women entrepreneurs’ energy and their aversion to laziness and low standards, saying these attitudes may prove decisive in the fight against corruption.

“At that Summit, the world will come to us, and we will show our best face to the world. Come out, participate, and make the most of the event. The world is open to you,” the President said.

Only 3 out of 5 Kenyans like American films, music and television shows.

Recent numbers have revealed that despite the fact that Kenyans watch a lot of foreign films from the west, their preferences lie elsewhere.

A survey from the Pew Research Center, a leading research group that carried out a number of studies in Kenya, has found that 56 per cent of Kenyans like movies from the United States. The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about recent events, social issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world.

It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research.

The Pew researchers, who drew their conclusions from a number of interviews with the local population, asked Kenyans whether they “like or dislike American music, movies and television.”

Almost a decade ago, only half of the population said they liked American entertainment. That number has since risen to 56 per cent, partially due to increased access to the internet and a wide variety of US channels to choose from.

Two people were last night attacked, one shot and wounded in separate carjacking incidents within Nairobi. A businessman was left wounded after he was shot in the leg and carjacked at Roasters night club along Thika Road. He was robbed Sh65, 000, a mobile phone and other valuables by the attackers who escaped. A similar incident occurred along Juja Road where a businesswoman was attacked and robbed of her car. The woman was headed for her home when she was attacked.

Police launch hunt for bus convoy attackers

Police officers patrol the Lamu-Mombasa Highway. Security personnel are hunting for gunmen who attacked passenger buses on the highway last night.

Security forces are pursuing militants who last night attacked a convoy of passenger buses and their army escorts in Mpeketoni.

Armed militants suspected to be members of alShabaab attacked the convoy along the Lamu-Mombasa highway and opened fire before they were repulsed.

The incident occurred at Milihoi where the attackers suddenly emerged from the forest and shot at the convoy. Police officers who were escorting the vehicles managed to repulse the attack.

No casualty was reported. Security sources said they are hunting for the gunmen believed to be hiding in the nearby Boni forest. Mpeketoni was the scene of last year’s attack in which al-Shabaab attackers killed more than 100 people in similar attacks. Last night’s attack also came just hours after al-Shabaab raided a camp housing quarry workers in Mandera and killed 14 people. “They used grenades and heavy guns. We came under intense attack. The bus was sprayed with bullets but it is a miracle nobody was hurt,” an eyewitness is quoted by AFP as having said.

Only last month, al-Shabaab members raided a military camp in Lamu but were repulsed following a serious shoot out with Kenyan troops who killed 11 of the them.

Obama will talk about gay rights in Kenya: US US President Barack Obama will discuss the rights of homosexuals during his visit to Kenya despite calls for him to steer clear of the emotive debate, the White House has said.

There have been calls and protests in Nairobi for Mr Obama to keep off discussing over the controversial topic when he lands in Kenya later this month with Deputy President William Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi leading the calls.

Monday, protesters demonstrated in the streets of Nairobi cautioning the US president not to weigh in on the emotive debate. However, White House press Secretary Josh Earnest says his boss has no intention of backing away from talking about the issue.

The country’s police force is advocating for people to take ‘safe selfies’ in the wake of a string of deaths.

According to Russian news agency Tass, there have been more than 10 deaths and about 100 accidents from individuals striking lethal poses this year. “A cool selfie can cost you your life,” the interior ministry state in a brochure which police will hand out to students and the general public.

The two-page guide contains infographics that resemble road signs, most of which are based on actual incidents -- such as the case of a 21-year-old Muscovite who accidentally shot herself in the head and a teenager from the Ryazan region who died after trying to take a photograph of herself on railway tracks.

Winning writer to share prize with runners up US-based Zambian writer Namwali Serpell has promised to share her winnings in the Caine Prize for African Writing with the runners up. She received the $15,600 (Sh1.56 million) prize for her short story The Sack. The judges described it as “innovative, stylistically stunning, haunting and enigmatic”.

Ms Serpell was among five writers short-listed for the prize, regarded as Africa’s leading literary award. Two South Africans and two Nigerians were also shortlisted for the prize - Masande Ntshanga for Space, FT Kola for A Party for the Colonel, Elnathan John for Flying and Segun Afolabi for The Folded Leaf. Ms Serpell said the promise to share the winnings was “an act of mutiny”. “I wanted to change the structure of the prize.

“It is very awkward to be placed into this position of competition with other writers that you respect immensely and you feel yourself put into a sort of American idol or race-horse situation when actually, you all want to support each other.”

The chair of judges, Zoe Wicomb, awarded the prize at a dinner held at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University in the UK. The short story “yields fresh meaning with every reading,” she said. In The Sack, two men who live together their whole lives love one woman but don’t know which one of them she loves. “One of the men has a series of backwards moving dreams about his own death and he becomes very paranoid about the other man,” Ms Serpell said.

KUCCPS boss John Muraguri shares his secret to success Education, patience and perseverance are the keys to success, says Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service CEO, John Muraguri.

He explains that hard work alone is not enough to climb the corporate ladder.

The self-described ‘José Mourinho’ of his team told X News during an exclusive interview what it takes to get to where he is today.

What is KUCCPS and what does it do?

The acronym KUCCPS stands for Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Service. It is a state corporation under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology tasked with a number of functions as per the Universities Act of 2012. The first one is the coordination of the placement of Government-Sponsored Students to Universities and Colleges.

It’s also our responsibility to collect and disseminate information on placement in Universities and Colleges. We are the custodians of the data.

We are also mandated by law

to provide carrier guidance programs for the benefit of students. We advise the government on matters relating to University and College student placement.

We disseminate information available on courses, their costs, the areas of study proprieties by the government for those who would like to pursue those areas.

Do Kenyans need the services that the Institute is offering?

Yes. They do. Kenyans need access to University and College education alongside enhanced career alignment.

The demand for that level of education is very high so there is need for an open and transparent process of selecting those who will join those Universities and Colleges as governmentsponsored students.

In the absence of such a system, then there is a lot of opaqueness in the way such selection is done. We ensure that the process is equitable.

What makes your company so special?

What has the Placement Service managed to Accomplish since its inception?

The Placement Service has developed policy for putting students in Colleges and Universities and also the procedure to actualize that policy, which has been approved by the Board of the Placement Service and subsequently was interrogated by the stakeholders who also approved it.

In the two years since the inception, we have been able to place one cohort of students in the 2014-2015 intake. Now we are in the process of placing the students for the 2015-2016 intake.

We have also been able to reach out to schools and students and conduct career functions and do a campaign for opportunities that are

there in the universities and colleges.

We were awarded an ICT value award for being one of the government agencies that has embraced ICT to the highest level so as to give academic solutions. Our processes are all automated and highly user-friendly.

What do you do at the KUCCPS? I am the Chief Executive Officer and the Secretary to the Board at KUCCPS. Basically, I am the team leader the ‘José Mourinho’ of the team.

What did you do to get where you are now?

I went through my Undergraduate and Post Graduate Studies at the University of Nairobi. My first Degree was in Bachelor of Education. I had a stint in the teaching profession for about five years. Thereafter, I joined the University of Nairobi as a University Administrator, which I have done for the last 28 years. I climbed up the ladder.

Why I found myself here is because the former institution which was doing this called

the Joint Admissions Board needed services like the ones we offer now. When this new institution was formed and was looking for someone to come and help establish it, they found and identified me.

I came and did that in an acting capacity for one year, after which they advertised the job and I applied, among others. We went through a very grueling selection process, after which the interviews were concluded.

That is how I got here.

What are some of the challenges you faced as a young person, looking for your first job?

Recognition. First of all, young people are looking for employment in large numbers.

The opportunities are few. For you to stand up and be seen is quite a challenge. You must do something that makes you stand out above the rest.

Did you work harder than your peers to get to where you are?

I think I worked well. I did my work well without complaining. I t also took a lot of patience even when the situation seemed to be unfair to me. I didn’t throw in the towel and get annoyed.

What advice do you have for young people joining the job market?

Even when nobody notices you, you continue doing well and doing a good job and I think the time will come when you will be rewarded, even when others do not identify what you are doing.

So it needs patience. One problem our young people have is they are in a bit of a hurry. And where they find disappointment, they jump out very fast. If they can have

a little bit of patience, and keep doing the right thing, they can get to where they want to be.

Any challenges you have experienced so far?

The challenges have been there. First of all, starting a new institution from scratch before. Most people are appointed to this position in an existing institution.

In my case, I’m supposed to assemble a vehicle from the wheels, the engine and everything else and have a vehicle that can move from nothing.

There are many impediments that you find in your way.

There are many adversities that stand in your way but with the help of God and using your wisdom, you are able to jump every hurdle. The other challenge, of course, is that people resist change.

There was the arrangement that Universities and Colleges used before. But now we have brought in something else, which has a legal mandate.

To make people change from what they were doing before to what they should be doing now, there is obvious resistance.

What we want to do is let those who are most deserving get the first opportunity.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I want to say that my desire is to see an institution built on good on values, principles and ethics, fairness, balanced access, where every Kenyan can be able to access what they deserve in terms of quality education.

That is what I want to leave as a legacy.

Uchumi halts expansion plans over funding

An Uchumi retail branch in Nairobi: The retail supermarket will not be expanding its business across boarders citing zero funding.

Uchumi Supermarkets will halt its growth plans after noting its expansion was conducted without internal capacity or funding.

Uchumi was planning to open eight more retail branches across East Africa in a bid to competitively and strategically position their entries into Rwanda and Burundi Speaking during investors briefing on Tuesdays, James Murigu, Board Member standing in for Chairperson Khadija Mire said, “The firm had finalized a Sh 500 million

financing arrangement with Kenya Commercial Bank to pay outstanding supplier debts.”

He then called upon all suppliers to declare their relationships because the retail chain was experiencing supply challenges citing that insiders had been supplying Uchumi but not giving value deals.

Other than hiring KPMG for a forensic audit of the company’s finance as Ernest and Young audit 2015 financial year, the company is planning to sell off its 20

acre Kasarani land valued at Sh 2.2billion to finalize payment of its suppliers.

“We have met a majority of our suppliers and the feedback has been very good.

A farming group in Vihiga County is raking in profits from the sale of rabbit pillows and wallets hedging themselves from a surplus of rabbit meat.

Vihiga Rabbit Breeders is a collection of 43 farmers who started off from growing cereals, however, unreliable rainfall which led to poor yields shifted their focus to rabbit rearing. Their commitment has contributed much to the success of the group.

“Every member of the group has taken this initiative as their own, from feeding to looking for markets because

at long last the more we earn as a group, the more each member takes home.” Said Hannington Yosi, a team leader of the group.

The company rears two breeds, the Angora and New Zealand rabbit for fur and meet production respectively.

The group cites rabbit keeping is easy as the animals are not affected by weather, and they take up a small piece of land while feeding on relatively smaller feeds compared to other livestock.

According to them, Kenya’s Ministry of Livestock played a major role in starting the

business as it taught them how to rear and care for rabbits.

They followed up by giving them 43 Angora breeds sourced from the National Rabbit Multiplication Center.

yemah McEntyre, a US high school teenager, last month broke the internet when she posted pictures of her prom dress on her Instagram page.

The dress was African-inspired, custommade by her from a West-African fabric called Dashiki. It trended on social media for days as people all over the world celebrated her unique dress and it was not long before Hollywood came calling.

Naturi Naughton, the lead actress of the television series, Power, graced the B.E.T red carpet in a beautifully-designed V-neck African-printed skirt gown by Kyemah.

She said she chose to get a dress designed by the young designer because she wanted to pay homage to her African roots.

The trend of paying homage to African roots through fashion is not new, Kenyan designers have lately been designing collections that bring out the best in African beauty mostly with a focus on

environment and the famous African woman figure.

Two weeks ago, at the Maybelline Fashion Party, all six of the designers showcasing, put out African-inspired collections from couture, urban-chic, sporty and even formal wear.

“Most fashion critics claim that it is playing safe when you design an African-inspired collection because you did not have to look far and you do not have to use complicated fabrics,” says Caroline Kinuthia, a fashion stylist, “but it is actually the most challenging one because people are familiar with it so it has be unique or else no one will have a second look at it.”

The designers are finding new and exciting ways to play around with the traditional African fabrics like Maasai shuka, kitenge and ankara by blending them perfectly with high fashion fabrics like silk, lace, silk and chiffon.

“African inspired collections are common especially here in Kenya,” says Sam Amariru, a fashion designer who is currently working on a new African inspired collection, “but you have to look at the competition, note what they are offering and design something amazing that has never been seen before or else you are just a copycat.”

The renaissance of the African-inspired collection abroad and home is a testament to the growth of African fashion .The recent visit by Kenya’s best export Lupita Nyong’o stamped that even further. Showing Lupita in mostly African inspired designs. We can only hope that once she wins another Oscar, her gown will be African.

So far however, we are happy to be on the global map fashion wise, and may be it won’t be long before Hollywood comes calling for one of our own.

Thank God we have some home remedies you can use to curb and treat this infection.

Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar is mildly acidic and helps prevent toenail fungus from spreading. It also kills bacteria and fungus.

Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and soak your toenails for 30 minutes. When done, dry your toenails thoroughly. Do this daily.

White vinegar This is one of the best ingredient for treating and fighting toenail infections and helps restore the skin’s PH. Mix one part of white vinegar with two parts of warm water and soak the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the toe and dry thoroughly. Repeat this twice a day until the fungus is completely healed.

Mix two drops of oil of oregano in one teaspoon of olive oil. Apply this mixture on the affected area. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Then, rinse it off and dry your toes thoroughly.

Repeat once or twice daily for three weeks to see positive results.

Many a times children at certain age bracket, more so at the early stages of adolescents fall victims of molestation by the very people they go to seeking solutions to their personal problems.

Suffice to say, quite a number of sexual assault on children these days happens in the hands of uncles, teachers or any close family friend because these are the only people willing and available to them at the time they need an answer as to why this and that in their personal lives. These

people in turn take advantage of their situation and subsequently devour them.

The reason being, parents are too busy for their children or they are not ready and open to discuss sex related issues with their children and tell them this is a spade and that is a spoon. Another reason is that we lack comprehensive curriculum in our education systems that targets character building such as sex education where children can learn, receive and share information on sexual matters. Could the 50 to 60 percent salary increment be just a hallucination? Or, could teachers be bearing the brunt of the all-out supremacy war between the Judiciary and the Executive?

Even after judge Nduma Nderi last week observed that teachers pay is not at par with that of other civil servant and therefore should go up the bar, Prof Kaimenyi has hitherto remained adamant that the government is broke to pay teachers extra Kshs 52 billion yearly above their budgetary allocation. This is a bitter pill for Sossion and his cohorts to swallow. Is it true that the government is broke? No, in the case of teachers, the government is not broke, but broken by Teachers Service Commission. TSC is just an employer of teachers on behalf of the government, and their role, especially in this ongoing tussle, should be to intercede and present teaches grievances to the government. To climate alarmists that believe fossil fuels are causing destruction and will lead to the end of our civilization, think of an elder in your neighborhood who may still heat their home with a fossil fuel. No worry, the Clean Power Plan will save us.

Over 36 hours flight as Malkia Strikers head for Australia

WARM UP: The Malkia queens in a warm up session in Algeria. The team left Algeria for Australia yesterday for the second round of the FIVB World Grand Prix.

The National Kenya team Malkia Strikers departed Algeria on Tuesday afternoon for Australia ahead of the second round of the FIVB World Grand Prix.

The Kenyan team under coaches David Lung’aho and Japheth Munala finished in third place in Group 3 to qualify for the playoffs scheduled for this weekend in Australia. The top three teams gained automatic qualification to join host nation Australia.

The trip to Australia according to the itinerary will take the Kenyan girls over 36 hours in the air and two days total traveling days including airport layover, time difference and connections.

From Algiers- Algeria, aboard Qatar Airways, the team will head to Doha Qatar for a connecting

flight to Bangkok Thailand. After Bangkok they take another connecting Flight to Sydney Australia and eventually connect to arrive in Canberra Australia on 9th July.

After Tuesday departure the team is expected to land in Australia on Thursday and will have one day to rest and shake off jet lag before taking Australia on Saturday 11th July in the semifinal match.

This will be the second meeting between the two teams with Kenya having beaten Australia 3-0 last weekend in Algeria.

Peru will take on Colombia in the second semifinal with the winner facing the winner of Kenya vs Australia.

KBF threatens to exclude clubs for non payment

Kenya Ports Authority and United States International University - Africa who are the men and women’s Premier League champions top the list of clubs that have defaulted league payments to Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), reports Sportsnews Arena.

Both teams have not paid any fees for this season and risk not playing in the second leg.

Joseph Amoko, the KBF fixtures secretary warned all defaulting clubs across the three leagues that they will be struck off second leg fixtures due to noncompliance. “Am just requesting them to pay up their dues to enable us run the league effectively,” he stated.

“We are through with the first leg and some of the inter-conferences have been played. We are only going to give fixtures for the teams which have paid up,” he added.

Other clubs that have not paid a penny for the 2015 season include World Hope, Trailblazers, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Baraka Xtreme, IAT Little Prince, Nebulas-Kakamega, Kenya College of Accountancy- University (KCA-U), Barclays Bank, Africa Nazarene University (ANU), Lakeside and Parklands Baptist all in division one.

In women’s Premier League, KCA-U, Sprite Storms, Mennonites, Eagle Wings, Western Delight and Kisumu Lady Bucks are playing on a negative. Mennonites, Thunder, Kenyatta University Pirates, Nairobi Aviation College, Nakuru Club, Lions and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) are the affected teams in men’s Premier League.

Others, among them 4 Christ, Blazers, Don Bosco and Eldonets of division one as well as women’s Premier League’s Masaku Sparks have made partial payments. Upper Hill, Emyba, MKU Thika, Strathmore University ladies, Strathmore University men, Blades, Equity Bank men and women, Cooperative Bank women, Ulinzi men and women, KU Oryx and Zetech University have all completed their full payments.

“If they say no, that means he will not be eligible to play in Kenya but can play in South Africa since the transfer window is still open. Amazulu indicated they would release him but they delayed issuing him the letter which they did on June 26,” Ngala told on Tuesday.

“He (Were) also took time in making up his mind before we applied for the ITC that required his approval,” he added.

The speedy winger, who is training with K’Ogalo, mutually ended his three-year contract with Amazulu becoming a free agent after securing the move from

Leopards.

Ashes 2015: England-Australia series set to begin in Cardiff England captain Alastair Cook has challenged his players to reignite the cricketing fervour of 2005 when the Ashes get under way in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Cricket has struggled to consistently captivate the nation since England won back the urn in a thrilling 2-1 series victory over Australia 10 years ago.

But Cook believes England have the players to excite the public as they attempt to avenge a 5-0 defeat down under in 2013-14.
