KENYA MOVES TO TACKLE TB MENACE WITH LAUNCH OF FIRST EVER SURVEY The government has today launched a national survey to help curb the increasing prevalence of Tuberculosis in the country. The ministry of Health through the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Lung Disease Program launched the historic study in Nairobi today morning. It is expected to help develop an evidence base which will help inform health policies regarding the disease. There has never been a TB prevalence survey in Kenya since independence when more than 80 percent of the country’s population was not yet born. “The last TB prevalence survey carried out in Kenya was done in 1958-59, many years before the HIV epidemic set in. This survey can no longer be used to estimate the TB burden and to plan for the delivery of TB and integrated TB/HIV services,” director of Medical services Nicholas Muraguri said. The survey which will be conducted over a period of 18 months in all the counties. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious airborne disease spread when people cough, sneeze or sing. Although TB is preventable, treatable and curable, it remains Kenya’s 4th largest cause of death. It affects all age groups, with its greatest toll among the most economically productive age group of 15 to 44 years. Although Kenya has attained the World Health Organization’s targets of detecting at least 70 percent of TB cases and successfully treating 85 percent of them, the country has seen an increase in TB prevalence from 50 percent per 100,000 people in 1990 to 326 percent per 100, 000 people in 2009. Elections have not been easy: IEBC The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has today admitted difficulties in managing elections saying lack of reforms have hampered its efforts to deliver elections that meet democratic standards. Speaking today during the launch of a strategic plan expected to guide the next general elections in 2017, IEBC chief executive Ezra Chiloba and the commission’s vice chairperson Lilian MahiriZaja admitted that they have faced difficulties during election times.
“Election time has always been a very difficult moment. Before the 2013 general elections, the commission had a 90 percent confidence in the people but that has since waned,” Ms Mahiri-Zaja said. “Elections are normally a democratic process. But in Kenya, some elections have fallen short of democracy status. Previous elections have not been easy for us. IEBC lacks reforms to make it a body that can manage elections and also be trusted not only in
the country but in the world,” Mr Chiloba added. He cited last minute reforms being forced on the commission a few months to election as the major reason the commission might have failed to deliver to the people’s expectations. But Mr Chiloba said they have begun institutional reforms that will ensure the commission delivers on its mandate as is expected. “Based on the plan we are launching today, managing of
2017 elections will be the test for conducting democratic elections,” he said. The plan is anchored on three key pillars; managing elections, institutional reforms and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi who was the chief guest at the function said it is time IEBC regained it lost glory. “It is not just about launching the plan but reviewing the goals and delivering your mandate as per the constitution. IEBC must regain its lost glory,” he said. Mr Muturi who last month
called for the trimming of IEBC commissioner from nine to three said the commission must be prepared to take constructive and positive criticism that will help them build the institution. Mr Chiloba had earlier said they will take in pride both criticism and praise in order to improve on their management of future elections. Only yesterday, the opposition faulted the launch of the strategic plan and called for its postponement to allow for further consultations.
KENYA MOVES TO TACKLE TB MENACE WITH LAUNCH OF FIRST EVER SURVEY
APPRAISEMENT: Dr Joseph Sitienei, Survey Principal Investigator celebrates after Dr Nicholas Muraguri, Director of Medical Services officially hands over the Survey Protocol to him during the launch of the TB Prevalence Survey at the Panafric Hotel in Nairobi early today.
From Page 1 A total of 90,000 TB cases were reported in the country in 2014. However it is estimated that there are about 20,000 ‘missing’ TB cases that go undetected and untreated. These missing cases likely contribute to the ongoing transmission of TB in communities and thus hinder efforts to attain zero TB infections and zero death. With the launch of the Prevalence Survey, the government hopes to get an accurate information to help tackle the burden, determine the existing challenges in accessing TB testing and treatment, and characterize persons identified with the disease that were not yet detected by the national TB control program. The process of the survey will involve a visit to individual households and invite those over 15years of age to a nearby mobile field site located at a school or community hall. At the field site, participants will be interviewed on features of TB, requested for a chest x-ray and asked to provide a sputum sample. The survey findings will inform
strategic TB interventions that address challenges faced in controlling TB and will go a long way in helping the country achieve globally recommended TB control targets by 2050. Dr. Joseph Sitienei, Survey Principal Investigator and Head of the Division of National Strategic Public Health Programs says, “The importance of this TB survey for Kenya cannot be over emphasized. Its success is hinged on the participation of all Kenyans and involvement of all stakeholders. The Ministry has also proposed the adoption of WHO recommended strategy for conducting Tuberculosis prevalence surveys. Kenya is currently ranked 15th among the 22 high burden TB countries that together account for more than 80 percent of the world’s TB cases. In partnership with County Governments, Global Fund, the World Health Organization, USAID, EXPAND TB, CDC, KEMRI, KNBS and other health and development partner organizations, the government of Kenya will use the data towards eliminating TB by 2030.
Governor’s graft case moved to Garissa The corruption case facing Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama has been moved to Garissa. His lawyer Ahmednassir Abdulahi says they had been notified about the changes and that they will be informed of the date. Jama was expected to appear in court this morning in Nairobi. He had last week presented himself before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for processing before he is taken to court to plead. The governor is to be charged over allegations of irregular leasing of ambulances in his county and the EACC had recommended that he be prosecuted. The ambulances were leased from Emergency Plus, a
company fully owned by the Kenya Red Cross. The commission recommended various criminal charges offences including abuse of office and wilful failure to comply with procurement regulations. Jama has since accused a local MP of being behind his woes and vowed he is innocent. The governor last week presented himself before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for processing before he is taken to court to plead to the charges. He was accompanied by four other governors, among them Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya. Several other leaders from North-Eastern Kenya were also present.

NEWS BRIEFS State mulls over fresh curfew in N.Eastern region
Two out of every five Kenyans believe that the government should have control over what people access on the internet. Recent numbers have shown that as many as 43 per cent of Kenyans say that the state should regulate internet access. Data from the Pew Research Centre has revealed that people over the age of 35 think that it is okay for the government to enforce censorship parameters on what people can view online. Young people, it seems, are strongly against this idea. In fact, 57 per cent of Kenyans believe that they should access the internet without the government acting as a watchdog, regulating the content that people choose to access. The Pew study, dubbed “Emerging and Developing Nations Want Freedom on the Internet”, surveyed thousands of people across 24 countries, including Kenya. It concluded that wealthy people were more likely to advocate for internet freedom since 71 per cent of high-income Kenyans said it is important, compared with 44 per cent of people in the low-income category.

Eugene Ludovic Wamalwa has finally been sworn in as Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary, a month after parliament approved his nomination to the docket. Mr Wamalwa took oath of office at a brief ceremony at State House which was witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta. He was nominated on April 17 to head the ministry, which President Kenyatta said was important, consideration that water was the basis of agricultural development. But he was forced to wait for more than a month before he could be vetted as MPs went on recess. However, the month-long delay that followed after his approval by parliament led to speculation with local reports suggesting the nomination of the former Justice Minister back into the Cabinet had caused jitters in the ruling Jubilee coalition. The born of contention according to the report was the displeasure by leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto’s URP party with President Kenyatta’s decision to take the irrigation function away from the giant ministry of Agriculture whose Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei is on suspension over corruption claims.

The government is considering re-imposing a curfew in North Eastern Counties following the latest attacks that left 14 people dead in Mandera. The consideration comes after initial investigations indicated the attack could have been carried out by radicalised Kenyan youths. “Preliminary investigations indicate the attackers are radicalised Kenyan youths. We suspect they are still in Mandera,” North Eastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh told reporters in Mandera town. The attackers struck at about 1am Monday night killing 14 and leaving 11 others seriously injured. Eight of those injured have since been flown to Nairobi for specialized treatment. The North Eastern Counties of Mandera, Wajir and Garissa together with those bordering Somalia like Lamu were under a 6pm to 6 am curfew until recently when President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive to lift the restriction to allow Muslims to hold night-long prayers during this holy month of Ramadhan.

Addressing members of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign group and the media, the president said that the government was doing all it could to tackle insecurity although he did not refer directly to the 219 Chibok girls abducted in April 2014. Earlier, the activists had marched through the capital, Abuja, on their way meet Mr Buhari at his official residence. His predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, declined to meet the Bring Back Our Girls activists. Mr Buhari promised them that troops for a regional force to fight the militants would be in place by the end of July.
More than 20 killed in Algeria tribal clashes At least 22 people have died in clashes between Arab and Berber communities around the Algerian oasis city of Ghardaia, the state news agency says. The city has seen clashes for the last two years, with rivalry among communities for jobs, housing and land. But the two days of clashes in Ghardaia and two nearby cities - Guerrara and Berianne - are the most violent yet. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday. A statement by the president urged people in Ghardaia “to help to restore calm and to preserve the age-old bonds of brotherhood which have always marked the region”.
Obama to stay in Kenya for three days; sources President Barack Obama will be in Kenya for three days according to diplomatic sources. The sources who requested anonymity could not however confirm whether the US President will visit his father’s rural village of Kogelo in Siaya County. Obama is expected to land in Nairobi on the evening of Friday July 24 and stay for three days during which he will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. This is contrary to earlier reports that suggested he would spend only eight hours in the country. Upon his arrival, Obama is expected to proceed to his hotel room which has not yet been disclosed. High profile US visitor including Vice President Joe Biden have stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel and Obama is largely expected to use the same facility. He is then scheduled to address the entrepreneurship summit on Saturday morning at the KICC. His other itinerary remains undisclosed although the sources indicated he would find time to visit the 1998 bomb blast site at the junction of Haile Selassie Avenue and Moi Avenue later that Saturday. The US president will later meet President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Opposition leaders and civil society groups before holding a press conference. Speculation is rife that Obama may also create time and sneak into Kogelo village although that remains to be seen. He is scheduled to leave the country on Sunday July 26.

Tunisia’s terror wall to stop threats Tunisia has announced plans to build a wall along its border with Libya to counter the threat from jihadist militants. It would stretch 160km (100 miles) inland from the coast, and be completed by the end of 2015, Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid told state TV. The gunman who killed 38 people in an attack on a beach resort is believed to have received training in Libya. Tunisia declared a state of emergency following the attack last month. The Tunisian army would build the wall, which would have surveillance centres at certain points along it, Mr Essid said.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has now been summoned by CID as pressure grows to have him prosecuted over inciting remarks he made in his constituency. Kuria was summoned to CID headquarters today, barely hours after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission wrote to Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to arrest and prosecute the legislator. NCIC Chairman Francis Ole Kaparo says utterances the MP made are likely to ignite tension between certain sections of society and thus needed to be investigated. “The commission is aware of the utterances made by Hon. Moses Kuria MP of Gatundu South constituency on 7th July 2015 at his constituency while he was launching a National Youth Service program,” read part of the letter. “These utterances in the opinion of the commission contravene Section 96 of the Penal Code thereby requiring investigations from your end.” Kaparo has also written to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keriako
Tobiko, urging him to seek the cancellation of bail terms issued to Kuria in a similar case pending in court. In the letter, Kaparo noted that although the utterances fell under the purview of the offences under the Penal Code, they were likely to ignite tension in the country and fast action needed to be taken. “This is therefore to request your good office to embark on seeking the cancellation of the bail terms placed on the accused person in the aforementioned case which is coming up for hearing on the 8th and 9th day of September 2015 respectively,” read the letter. This follows pressure from a section of leaders and Kenyans on social media who want action taken against Kuria who was captured on video urging youths in his constituency to kill anyone opposed to the NYS project. But Kuria says his comments were misconstrued. “My conscience is very clear… I have never been involved in violence. In fact, in school I was bullied,” said Kuria.

BIZ GADGET Perhaps you’ve heard the awkward term ‘the Internet of Things, or IoT. IoT refers to networkable home gadgets: door locks, light switches, coffee makers, stuff like that. However, most of these haven’t really caught on with the public at this moment but at least one category is catching on: Home security cameras. The Nest cams are tiny and easy-to-set-up Wi-Fi cameras that enables you to peek in on what the cameras are seeing on the Web or from your phone, wherever you go in the world. You can use Nest cams to see who’s at the
Tech This Out: Nest cams front door, check if the baby’s awake, find out if the nanny is overfeeding your kids, or monitor your home for motion when you’re not there. The video quality, already superb, has been enhanced. Instead of 720p high definition, it’s now 1080p. Truth is, though, that on the Web, you don’t see much difference. And on most phones, you can’t see any difference, since 1080p quality exceeds the resolution of most phones. Recently launched smartphones like the iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S5/ S6 can display 1080p video.
There’s improved night vision, too. The Nest Cam can see in the dark with spectacular clarity, which is amazing. Finally, the very cool, sleek, hinged metal stand is also new. When you’re setting it up, you can turn the camera lens within the stand, so you can mount the Nest Cam’s base upside-down, sideways, right-side-up—and still point the camera exactly where you want it. The camera comes with a wall plate for wall mounting, and the base even has a magnetic ring, so you can pop the whole thing onto your refrigerator door (to catch whoever’s rummaging for snacks at midnight).
Increased bank lending rates a temporary relief to the shilling Increase in the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) lending rate to 11.50 percent from 10 percent will only offer temporary relief to the local currency, according to money market experts. According to Standard Investment Bank Research, the rise is as a result of persistent weakness in current account deficit and slow foreign capital inflows which gives the current a global wide risk of version. The research further says, in the
first quarter of 2015, imports increased by 3 per cent to Sh 335.7 billion while the value of exports reduced by 2.3 per cent to Sh 131.5 billion. John Njenga, the treasury Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) dealer says increasing interest rates won’t solve the current account deficit hence more needs to be done in import and export disparity. “The latest measures will benefit the local unit in the near term particularly given authorities’
and willingness to address excess liquidity in the banking system through more fine-tuned liquidity management operation.” Said Razia Khan, Standard Chartered Bank Chief Economist. He further said the authorities may need to double their efforts to prove their willingness to cool a potentially overwhelming economy because, Kenya Banks Reference Rate (KBRR) raised only 133 basis point from January to 9.87 per cent yet its reset every after six months.
According to Jonathan Wakahe, senior Portfolio Manager at Pan Africa Asset Management, the existing floating rates will be affected by the rise in KHRR as both floating and fixed taken out will lead to a hike. Yesterday, the shilling gained marginally against the dollar trading at 100.20 against 100.40 to the dollar compared to 100.55 against 100.65 recorded at the close of business on Tuesday. “It is difficult to tell precisely how
the banks will react, but I anticipate that, on average, the full differential in the KBRR (133 basis points) will be passed on to new fixed and floating and existing floating rate borrowers; I expect that this will dampen demand for credit, at least in the near-term,” Wakahe explained. According to him, higher domestic rates will increase the attractiveness of the shilling, attracting more foreign capital and leading to an appreciation of the local unit.

or the longest time, the government has been accused of sleeping on the job by being a passive administration run by heavy words and empty threats on matters of national concern. The government has also been accused of being a reactive government, only responding to crisis situations after the damage has already been done instead of proactively implementing aversive measures. It seems President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally bowed to the pressure of the Jubilee Mantra of “kusema na kutenda,” judging by the massive illicit brew crackdown we have witnessed in the past few days. Those charged with spearheading the activity however seem to be taking the president’s ban on illicit brew too literary, embarking on property burning sprees in what is either plain hooliganism or lack of anger management. Knowing the kind of behavior Kenyans exhibit when it comes to alcohol, the government should have been more discreet in the operation and avoid involving locals by all means. It is no secret that we are a drinking nation. After all, we are the same people who create stampedes on accident scenes involving vehicles ferrying alcohol, trying to salvage as much booze as possible for personal indulging and business use. Furthermore, how can we expect a smooth and peaceful operation if those charged with heading the crackdown in the grassroots are the local leaders who regularly engage in physical combats within county assembly chambers? The Kenyan scene is never short of the blame game and in this case, the government has been accusing locals of looting and destroying property, with the locals in turn accusing the government of using too much force. It shouldn’t be too long before a political angle is incorporated into all this confusion that has led the brewery’s association to make threats of taking the government to court on the matter. Despite the destruction of property, the illicit brews crackdown comes as a relief to many, especially women who had been struggling with unproductive and money wasting husbands who would spend days and nights in these shanties drinking themselves blind, with methanol induced death being the worst case scenario. The reason as to why legalized alcohol production companies are also being targeted in these raids is still unclear as is the reason for inclusion of traditional beers in the banished-beer list. the government’s move. “These killer brews need to be drained down to the last one, although in an organized and responsible manner. As much as we want to do away with killer brews, we also don’t want to take our country backwards by destroying infrastructure.” Geoffrey Karimi who operates a wines and spirits outlet however has a different stand. “I don’t understand why the same government that runs the Kenya Bureau of Standards wants to strip us off our income, yet some of the alleged illicit drinks bear a genuine KEBS stamp. There is a lot of hypocrisy and conspiracy in this whole affair.” Esther Njambi is in support of the crackdown, encouraging the government to eradicate all illicit brews and outlets and also advising legitimate alcohol producers to take a firm stand against their counterparts using fishy production methods leading to unnecessary loss of lives. She adds that if she did not have to go to work daily, she would “definitely actively partake in the operation.” All is fair in war but it remains to be seen whether the banning and burning of illicit brew establishments is justified or not.

very day we hear cases of people whose social media accounts and emails have been compromised. The affected are always frantic and worried about someone else controlling their account. The hacker completely takes over your account and starts posting whatever they fancy. In some cases, the hackers resort to posting pornography on the page. These days however hackers are just not content with posting vulgar stuff on one’s timeline. They take over your page and make sure you notice that they are there. The hacker then proceeds to log in and out of your profile. They then sit tight for a few months resurfacing later with an email. The hacker will pretend to be someone else who wants to genuinely help you recover your account from the ‘hacker’. They will then proceed to show you what they can do with your profile on social media or email. The hacker then moves in for the kill asking

The hacker moves on to the user’s email which they take over in a matter of minutes and soon locks out the user as well. Now one cannot access their information online. Eko Dyda is back After a self-inflicted hiatus, mostly attributed to changes in the gospel scene, EkoDyda is back. He has been in the news recently for taking on DJs. The singer has been vocal about how DJs do not play Kenyan music. The gospel artiste even went as far as sharing his personal experiences where particular DJs refused to play his music because he was not part of their clique. Eko has been quoted as saying his music is more popular in secular channels than gospel ones. Now he has released a new song Nina One. The rapper shared a snippet of the upcoming video online and got great reviews from fellow artistes and fans. The song is set to drop soon and we cannot wait to hear the full version.

TECHniCAl univERsiTy oF MoMbAsA in supREMACy wARs The student’s leadership at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) are into side shows, again. The student’s president who fairly won the seat from Ben Ng’ang’a, was sent packing from the institution by the varsity management for allegedly scoring below the cut mark. It is believed that the mechanical engineering student, Desmond Ocharo scored grade F in more than half of the courses he was taking. As if that was not enough, Students led by the former chairperson took to their social media accounts to ridicule their esteemed president for being an embarrassment to the engineering students in Kenya. Former chair, Ben,
did not let this chance go to waste as he took the opportunity to scorn and remind Desmond of his numerous warning on the administration plots against TUMSO leaders. This is connected to his previous expulsion for allegedly inciting students to vandalize the university property. The leader is yet to come out clearly over the issue. He allegedly received his letter of discontinuation on Friday last week but hid it until Sunday when students got a wind of it. However, Desmond will continue to lead the union up to the end of his academic year when new elections shall be held according to their constitution.

UON student is infecting men with HIV virus
N
ews of students infecting others with HIV/ AIDS in various universities is not new to us. At times the varsities even makes an efforts to come up with lists of shocking stories or statistics of those who fall prey to this deadly virus. A student at University of Nairobi, caused shock and discomfort among men who had attended the much glorified Masaku 7s event that went down last weekend. While others had various plans for the event, the lady had her own scheme hidden well inside her heart and only she knew about. The girl now christened Vera had it all planned out. The diva came up with a letter and a long list to testify of her deeds and targets. In her letter she alleged she infected twenty five (25) men with the deadly HIV virus for revenge. According to her, six men had mercilessly raped and infected her with the virus during the last year 7s, hence the need to spread the virus. Vera shamelessly revealed her mission which has just started and is planning to infect more than 1000 men before she meets her death.
MulTiMEdiA univERsiTy plAnning A RioT on FRidAy Multimedia University students are planning to stir up trouble yet again come Friday this week, to demand a refund of compensation fee they had earlier paid during a recent strike. The angry students had recently strike over a WI-FI outage in February this year where they ended up causing extensive damage. To compensate for this, the university management claimed fee from each students as payment of the said property including the vice chancellors vehicle. Apparently the students had obediently paid the amount as was agreed but later on came to realise that the said property was insured and repaired even before their contribution was made. One of the students who asked for anonymity termed the act by the administration as malicious and therefore the need to take the matter to the streets for explanation. This time they plan to cause damage and not pay!

songs with over 1 billion views Gangnam style has over two billion views, yet it is done mostly in Korean, a language most of these viewers don’t comprehend. The large number of viewers can be attributed to the fancy video which gave birth to Gangnam style dance back in 2012. There is something about Psy’s music that is hard to put a finger on, seeing his 2013 hit Gentleman is only 200K views shy of the 1 billion mark.

The boy that all men love to hate had already clocked 1 billion views as of 2014 in one of his very first hits since being discovered on You tube by Usher. Some of his other videos are also well on the way with Beauty and a Beat, a collabo with Nicki Minaj nearing 500k views. With a baby face and smile like his, how can the ladies stay away?

Shun the popal promulgation of homosexuality Folks, did you hear Pope Francis on divorce and homosexuality during his visit to Ecuador? He asked Ecuadorians to pray for a miracle on concepts such as divorce and homosexuality, which he said people consider “impure”. In addition, should the miracle fail, the catholic synods and prelates will be meeting next week to deliberate on changes over contentious catholic doctrine aforesaid. Albeit, if ever the Pope is infallible and speaks excathedra as held by Catholics tradition, I’m sorry this time round, he is fallacious, seditious and erroneous. It is now certain, as the Vatileaks once
revealed, that Pope Benedict resigned upon receiving a dossier compiled by three Vatican cardinals of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican. Know ye Pope Frank, these vices are not cosmogonies as you say; they are scripturally evil and blasphemous as taught in Romans 1:26-27 and 1 Corinthians 5:9. Woe to Catholic faithful, who in due course, will start learning homosexuality in their catechisms as a binding doctrine. The days of dark ages are long gone, where Catholics fill people’s mind with phantasmagoria and deny the plough boy access to Bible truths. — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi
Anti-graft body should ensure proper justice is served The anti-corruption commission recently announced that it would crackdown on greedy and corrupt parliamentary officials. While I have my doubts about their ability to take on high profile individuals, the anticorruption commission still has to make good on their promise. They need to not only name and shame the guilty parties, but also have them prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It’s not enough to impeach a politician. If a man can spend years in prison for stealing a chicken, an MP should spend decades for defrauding the public. Stealing public funds is akin to an act of treason! It is unforgivable! — Damien Kimani, Nairobi
Moses Kuria is a waste of space Moses Kuria should be rotting away in jail as I write this. What he is still doing roaming free is still baffling. Moses Kuria made some very disturbing remarks and as we all know, the tongue can ignite a fire that can be difficult to extinguish. This is not the first time his mouth has had diarrhea, he has been talking rubbish for a very long time and nothing has been done to rein him in. Yes there is the occasional court case but that is not enough to tame someone who is hell bent on causing tribal strife among Kenyans. He should actually be arrested and taken to jail without an option of a court hearing. He is a disgrace. — Lisa Ang’iro, Nairobi
Gay debate: Let Obama speak his mind I don’t think we should be worried about US President Barrack Obama rallying for gay rights on his visit to Kenya this month. We live in a free world. Obama’s views should not be anyone’s concern. Let him fulfil his diplomatic and social agenda. Just because he has legalised gay relationships back in the US does not mean that we have to follow in his footsteps. We are a free nation but we need to learn how to interact with other nations even though we don’t completely agree with their policies. — Alice Awiti, Nairobi
Stop modern day slavery and pay up house maids what they deserve!
I would like to address yesterday’s letter on X News Page 11 from the Disgruntled Nairobian, headlined “Pay rise for maids? How inappropriate!” In the letter, the writer pointed out that giving maids a pay rise would be like fleecing employers who pay the rent, pays the bills and buys the food which they feed the maid. But they forget the reason they got the maid is because they are not capable of doing the chores themselves. She cleans the house, takes care of
your children, washes your clothes and the same food that you feed her, she is the one that prepares it. Keep in mind, she does this every day. Surely, if you cannot afford to pay her then you do not deserve the luxury of having a maid, stop living beyond your means! Get rid of the maid and wear dirty clothes to work, leave your children unattended to, and live in a dirty house and die of hunger because you cannot cook. — Dan Mwaganu, Imara Daima

Sterling does not want to play for Brendan Rodgers Raheem Sterling has told the Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, he no longer wants to play for him and that is why he wants to leave the club. Sterling says that his discontent with Rodgers was due to the manager not taking him seriously last season about his desire to leave Anfield to further his career. The England forward was also unhappy at not being told when Manchester City and Manchester United made initial inquiries about his availability. When Liverpool were asked about Sterling’s stance they categorically denied it. However, it is clear there has been a breakdown between the player and Rodgers, which makes the player’s presence on Liverpool’s tour to the Far East and Australia even more unlikely. City have had a £40m bid turned down by Liverpool but remain interested in buying Sterling. But it is understood City have no plans to make a higher offer for a player valued at £50m by Liverpool. While the hierarchy may decide to make a further offer for Sterling at some point in the future, for the moment there is no intent to do so. Sterling did not report for training at Liverpool’s Melwood complex on Wednesday morning, saying that he was ill. The club did not offer any comment although the medical department has been asked to verify Sterling’s claim, which is standard procedure for any player who calls in sick. The 20-year-old does not wish to take his seat on the plane when the squads fly to the Far East on Sunday to start their close-season tour. Liverpool, though, are clear he should travel and be available for selection for the first match in Bangkok on Tuesday. It remains to be seen how Sterling’s feelings of discontent with Rodgers will affect the club’s stance over the coming days.

Kipchoge will not focus on WR in Berlin
BIG KIP: Eliud Kipchoge wins the 2015 London Marathon in April. He says that breaking the world record would not be a priority when he competes in the Berlin Marathon in September.
Kenyan marathon sensation Eliud Kipchoge says breaking the world record would not be a priority when he competes in the Berlin Marathon in September, reports Capital FM Sports. Having won the London marathon in April, the 30-year-old former 5,000m world outdoor champion believes winning in Berlin would help build his impressive reputation as a marathon runner. Kipchoge will lead two other experienced Kenyans in the September 27 race, including Emmanuel Mutai, who finished second behind Dennis Kimetto when he set the new world record of 2:03.23 in Berlin last year. “I have been privileged to train with both Emmanuel Mutai and Geoffrey Mutai, since I switched to marathon running,” Kipchoge, who was runner-up in Berlin in 2013, told AFP.
“The fact that we will be competing against each other in Berlin this time round doesn’t mean we will not go hard on each another. But for me I will prefer to run my own race and see what happens. “Dennis Kimetto’s world record would be hard to break so soon, but everything is possible if the conditions are right and people are prepared for the task,” said Kipchoge “I wouldn’t say anything about breaking the world record. It will depend on how one feels on the day,” said Emmanuel Mutai. Kipchoge and the two Mutais have had experiences with the fast Berlin course and have all stood on the winners’ podium. Kipchoge was second with a personal best time of 2:04.05 in 2013, behind fellow countryman, Wilson Kipsang, who set a world record (2:03:23).

Gatlin, Gay and Three new faces as Kenya Powell to battle readies for title defence in Bolt’s absence Justin Gatlin might have strung together an undefeated run of 25 races since August 2013, but his main rivals in the absence of the injured Usain Bolt believe the American sprinter can be beaten. Gatlin re-emerged on the track after his second 2006-10 doping ban an athlete possessed, going on to win the 2012 world 60m indoor title, an Olympic 100m bronze in at the London Games and world silver
in 2013 to add to his 2004 Olympic title and 2005 world sprint double. At 33, he finds himself in the form of his life, and this season is currently the fastest man over both distances having set bests of 9.74sec in the Doha 100m in May and 19.57sec in the 200m at Eugene in June. With Bolt struggling with a pelvis problem, there is a chink of light for those seeking to overthrow the towering Jamaican who has
dominated world sprinting since blasting his way to a golden treble at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “Is Justin Gatlin unbeatable?” Bolt’s Jamaican teammate Asafa Powell asked ahead of Thursday’s Diamond League meet, where he will face both Gatlin and his US teammate Tyson Gay. “I don’t know who this guy thinks he is, but he is the fifth fastest man so clearly he can be beaten.”
The 2007 double world sprint champion Gay, who also served a one-year doping ban reduced for cooperating with the drug authorities, added: “Justin can be beaten anytime but we must admit that he has been running great this season.”Powell himself has also been in sparkling form this season, storming to victory in Paris last weekend.“I have been running very well this season. I aim to run fast
just the same tomorrow. Big races like these are what people pay to see. I am happy to an early run with the best guys before the big one in Beijing,” he said in reference to next month’s world championships in the Chinese capital. “Races like these are important, you get to fix the minor problems. Running against the top guys is always good, it helps you to improve.”
Chile’s Vidal apologises to crash arrest cop Chilean football star Arturo Vidal apologised Wednesday to police for threatening an officer during a drunk driving arrest while his country was hosting the Copa America, a tournament his team eventually won. The court suspended Vidal’s license for two years over the drunk driving charge, but he will not face trial after apologizing for the June 17 incident. “I am Arturo Vidal and I would like to apologize to the Chilean police,” he said in court as he was arraigned on the additional charge of threatening the officer, with the cop present. “I was out of control and I showed disrespect for him, and now I regret this,” said Vidal, who also said he would give public awareness speeches to youths about the dangers of drunk driving and
donate sports equipment. Vidal was caught on tape after the accident swearing at the arresting officer in a confrontational exchange. “Go ahead and handcuff me, but you’re going to shit all over Chile,” he can be heard saying in the amateur video, which was posted online by Santiago radio station Bio Bio. When the video emerged, Vidal was slapped with the additional charge. Vidal made a tearful apology the day after the accident. He was allowed to keep his spot on the Chile squad, which went on to win the tournament with an upset victory over Argentina. Vidal crashed his bright red Ferrari as he was returning to Santiago after an evening at a casino. His wife, who was with him in the car, was injured.

Gor threaten to pull out of Cecafa tourney Gor Mahia’s participation at this year’s Cecafa Club Championships (Kagame Cup) is in doubt after the club announced they couldn’t secure air tickets to Tanzania, reports Capital FM Sports. This is after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) informed the domestic champions they could not afford to pay for their tickets to the annual tournament. Gor chairman, Ambrose Rachier, told Capital Sport they have no option but to pull out from the regional tourney that runs from July 18 to August 2 if they fail to raise ticket money. “The federation had agreed to pay air tickets for us to travel on Thursday but they have told us they don’t have money. It’s impossible for us to travel since had they told us earlier, we would have conducted a fundraising,” Rachier added. “We have already informed (Nicholas) Musonye that we might not honour the tournament. He told us in our meeting, Cecafa would pay for everything, including food and accommodation but the federations were to cater for the air
tickets,” he added. Cecafa general secretary, Nicholas Musonye, informed Capital Sport member federations had agreed to share responsibility towards ensuring their representatives take part in the competition. It is they he proclaimed, who agreed to pay for air travel for teams taking part with the regional governing body taking charge of other expenses. “We have already done our part. We are almost done. The federation should also do their part. Gor Mahia and FKF should agree to disagree to come to find a solution,” Musonye stated. FKF appeared to conflict with that assertion saying on their part, the agreement to pay for air tickets was in relation to the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup that pools national teams as opposed to Kagame Cup. “When the presidents met three months ago, they agreed each member country would take care of their own travel expenses to reduce the budget of organising the Cecafa Senior Challenge. “Air tickets take a large part of that budget. It was not agreed the club
championships were part of it,” an official of the national federation offered promising a statement from president, Sam Nyamweya on the matter. “Let Rachier produce any documents committing FKF to paying for tickets arising from the meeting. I can categorically state there was not such an agreement for clubs, only national team in the Senior Challenge Cup. “As far as we are concerned, it is the responsibility of clubs to make their own arrangements to play at their events, not the federation. They approached us and we told them we had no money for their tickets,” Nyamweya declared. “We hereby wish to inform your office that our club intend to travel to Tanzania on Thursday 16, 2015 with a contingent of 30 people for the opening match of the above-mentioned tournament against Young Africans FC (Yanga) on Saturday 18, 2015 at the National Stadium. “The list will come your way as soon as your office is ready to issues the tickets,” Gor wrote to the federation in a letter published on FKF’s website. Olunga redeems self as K’Ogalo soar, Ingwe survive Barely days after coming in for stinging criticism with Harambee Stars, Michael Olunga, extended his lead at the Kenyan Premier League top scorers’ chart by heading in the second in a 2-0 win over Thika United on Wednesday. The lanky 21 year-old who failed to find the target as Stars limped out of the 2016 CHAN qualifiers in a barren draw against Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex last Saturday, put the gloss to the performance after Ugandan midfielder, Godfrey Walusimbi put the champions
in front. It took his personally tally to 12 and restored unbeaten K’Ogalo’s lead at the top of the KPL pile to a similar number of points after closest rivals Sofapaka trimmed it to nine points after their 1-0 away win over Chemelil on Tuesday. Arch rivals AFC Leopards salvaged a last-gasp 2-1 win over resolute bankers KCB in the late Wednesday game at a floodlit Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium to revive their campaign. Elsewhere, former champions Ulinzi
Stars and Tusker FC huffed to a 1-1 draw with the early kick-off between basement sides Nakuru All Stars and Nairobi City Stars returning the same outcome at Nakuru’s Alfraha Stadium. At Nairobi’s City Stadium, Gor who had six starters on Saturday in Stars squad that crashed out of CHAN 2-0 on aggregate to Ethiopia were hellbent to keep their three-peat title charge on course against plucky Thika who arrived on the back of a morale boosting 1-0 win over bitter foes AFC Leopards.

ritain’s Andy Murray reached his sixth Wimbledon semi-final in seven years with victory over Canadian Vasek Pospisil under the Centre Court roof. The Scot, seeded third, won 6-4 7-5 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes, and will play second seed Roger Federer in the last four on Friday. Murray, 28, had to cope with two rain delays, the second of which saw the roof brought across in the second set. “It was difficult, we were stopped a couple of times,” said Murray. “I felt I played some good stuff. He served extremely well for periods. I tried to change my return position at the end of the second set to see the returns better.” Looking ahead to a 24th meeting with seven-time champion Federer, Murray added: “I know Roger very well, we walked to the practice courts together this morning. “Friday is a different story and hopefully we can have a great match.” Murray produced a clinical performance to see off Pospisil, the world number 56, in straight sets. The Canadian, making his first appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, kept Murray’s return game at bay for the most part but the Briton capitalised on fleeting chances to establish control. Murray converted the solitary break point on offer in each of the first two sets,
both with fizzing cross-court backhands that caught out Pospisil at the net. The first break came just before play was halted for 35 minutes at 3-1 because of the rain, and a second interruption of 30 minutes in the second set saw the roof brought across, despite a burst of sunshine. Murray did well to hold serve for 4-4 on the resumption as Pospisil pressed, and the Briton took a firm grip on the contest when he broke for 6-5. Two lengthy rallies played to Murray’s strength, with a breathless Pospisil given a time warning at 30-30, and the 2013 champion clinched the key break with a drop shot and a backhand. Pospisil, 25, fended off four break points with big serves and a fifth with a brilliant drop volley as Murray raised the pressure further in the third set. The decisive moment came at 4-4 when Pospisil, who had a first serve taken away for a second time warning, was forced out of position and played a shot between his legs facing a sixth break point. Murray stepped in and crunched a backhand winner into the corner before saving a break point and converting his second match point in a tense closing game. “I have loved playing here over the years,” added Murray. Top seed Novak Djokovic will take on Richard Gasquet in the other semi-final.
