MPs reject Uhuru invite in Sugar row

M

Ps from western region have publicly turned down an invitation by President Uhuru Kenyatta to State House to discuss the on-going row on a deal signed to import Ugandan sugar into the

country. Led by their chairman under the Western Parliamentary

Caucus Sakwa Bunyasi, the MPs said they declined the invitation because they were not aware of the full details of the agreement President Kenyatta signed with Uganda. “Yesterday we received an invitation from his Excellency the President asking to meet Members of Parliament from Western this morning. After deliberations as a caucus, we have agreed

that we will not honour it until we get full disclosure of the agreement,” Bunyasi told journalists during a press conference at the parliament buildings today morning. He said they could not discuss the deal with the President, as they don’t know anything about it. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs reject State House invite in sugar row From Page 1 “Let the President make full disclosure of the deal, then we will sit down as a caucus, deliberate on it and make our recommendations known,” he added. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has criticised the President over the deal saying it will hurt Kenya’s economy. However, President Kenyatta has since defended the deal and told off Mr Odinga whom he urged to stop engaging in ‘destructive politics’ that undermines the country’s economic progress. Uhuru said the allegations made by Odinga concerning importation of Ugandan sugar into Kenya were misplaced saying it is more logical for Kenya to import

sugar from Uganda than Brazil. “When you say that I went to talk about bringing cheap sugar into Kenya, which cheap sugar are you talking about? Where do you want us to get our shortfall from?” He posed during a forum where Mr Odinga was present at KICC yesterday. The legislators from western however ignored President Kenyatta and instead chose to meet with Mr Odinga at the latter’s Capitol Hill office. They said they feel the deal signed with Uganda will hurt their region’s economic backbone, which is sugar production. “We can only engage with the President if we think he is helping sugarcane farmers. For now, we don’t think that is happening,” Budalang’i

MP Ababu Namwamba said. They also said the President’s invitation was not inclusive enough as MPs from other sugar growing zones were not invited. “Sugarcane is not only grown in western Kenya. He should have invited all MPs in whose regions sugar is grown,” Namwamba added, saying that they chose to turn down the invite because the details of the sugar deal are still ‘shadowy’. The leaders said they remain committed to defending and advancing the best economic interests of farmers from their region. Others present were Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini), Moses Injedi (Malava), Benjamin Washiali (Mumias East), Michael Aringo

(Butula), Silverse Anami (Shinyalu), David Were (Matungu) and Reginald Wanyonyi. They said the decision to import sugar from Uganda would undermine Mumias Sugar Company, which was only bailed out recently by the government. The MPs also noted that there is a substantial amount of sugar in Nzoia Sugar Company and Butali Sugar Company which the government should first offload to the market before thinking of importing more into the country. “Why can’t we empower our local farmers and see what they can do in terms of sugar production before we talk about the sugar deficit in the country,” Namwamba posed.

He said that any international agreement the President signs on behalf of the country must come to parliament for debate and he expects the sugar one to be no exception. Namwamba however said that the caucus refusal to meet the President is not politically instigated but they acted on the interest of the Western people. Kiminini Member of parliament Chris Wamalwa said Kenya is a head of Uganda in terms of development and should not import Sugar from them. “There must be a cartel somewhere that wants to bring sugar into our country through Uganda, our worry therefore is that this deal is going to kill our sugar industry,” Wamalwa said.

IEBC PROPOSES MPS BE DEGREE HOLDERS in 2017 The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has proposed amendments to the Elections Act to require those vying as Members of Parliament to hold a degree from a recognised university and a diploma for Members of County Assemblies (MCA) for the 2017 polls. IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan (pictured below) told the National Assembly’s Legal Affairs Committee that all elective posts including MCAs will be require one to hold a degree by 2022. He observed that raising minimum academic qualifications for elective offices was important to guarantee quality leadership. The Elections Act states that only the President, Deputy President, Governors and Deputy Governors are required to hold a degree from a recognised university. The Constitution and County Government Act do not specify academic qualifications for MCAs. MPs in the committee said given the large amounts of money devolved given to counties, Members of County Assemblies must be educated and intellectually equipped to carry out oversight. MPs in the Tenth Parliament changed the law at the last minute before going to the poll, effectively shielding themselves from the requirement. In the last minute change, MPs lowered proposed academic requirements, exempting

candidates for both Houses of Parliament and County Assemblies from holding degrees. Thus, for the last General Election, candidates did not require a certificate, diploma or other post-secondary school qualification. The IEBC is further proposing that by-elections shouldn’t be done six months before General Elections. Political party nominations for General Elections remain 90 days before the poll while party membership lists should be submitted 120 days before elections. This will allow the commission to address all nomination disputes. Currently the law gives them 45 days. The recommendation is among a raft of 31 proposed amendments made by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the general elections. The proposals also include tough nomination rules aimed at preventing chaotic party primaries that have now become a norm.

Kiharu MP Irungu Kang’ata dismissed the proposal terming it unconstitutional as it infringed on the rights of individuals. “It will be against the principle of human rights as forcing certain qualifications on those seeking public office will deny them opportunities to serve the people,” Kang’ata said. Kiharu said, if passed, the law will bar people with leadership qualities from holding positions. “We have seen even in this Parliament people who are not graduates making contributions which the socalled learned members have failed to deliver. The proposals have already started to generate heat among the members of the Justice and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly who are tasked to prepare the bill and are now divided on its merits and demerits.

WELCOME: President Uhuru Kenyatta shakes hands with Assembly of State Parties President Sidiki Kaba when they met at State House Nairobi yesterday.

Uhuru: Kenya will cooperate with ICC President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday said that his administration will continue to ‘cooperate fully’ with the International Criminal Court (ICC), and will continue to do so because it believes in the rule of law and international justice. The President said it was for that reason that him and Deputy President William Ruto voluntarily submitted to the court when they were required to do so following the 2007/2008 post-election violence in Kenya. “If Kenya believed in impunity, it would not have submitted to the courts as it did. We have equally all along cooperated with the court because we are committed to justice at all levels,” he said. “African countries have expressed concern over whose agenda the ICC is pushing but despite all that, we have never failed to cooperate with the court,” he added. He appealed to the court not to focus on justifying its existence at the expense of its core mandate of delivering international justice and ensuring peace and reconciliation. Uhuru said the objective of the court must be to bring people together and ensure justice is served but not to causing more problems. President Kenyatta was speaking during a meeting with the new Assembly of State Parties (ASP) to the Rome Statute of the ICC, President Sidiki Kaba who paid him a courtesy call at State House, Nairobi.

Kaba who is a former Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seal of the Republic of Senegal, was elected on December 8, 2014 by the 13th Session of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the Rome Statute of the ICC as the President of the assembly for the next three years. He is the first holder of the ASP office to visit Kenya. President Kenyatta pointed out that Kenya and other African countries played a key role in the creation of the Court and the Rome Statute. He emphasized that Kenya has fully complied with the requirements of ICC including the implementation of a progressive constitution that has entrenched justice and ensured democracy and the rule of law. As a result, the President said, Kenya has been commended for the systems it has put in place to safeguard the rights of citizens. Kaba, who also delivered a special message to President Kenyatta from Senegalese President Macky Sall, said Africa provides the most important team to the ASP and its concerns must be heard and addressed. He assured President Kenyatta that Kenya’s and Africa’s issues will be accorded the attention they deserve during his tenure as President of the Assembly of State Parties. Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and PS Karanja Kibicho attended the meeting.

Breakups are tougher on men than on women Men suffer the most once a romantic relationship comes to an abrupt end, research has revealed. While a woman will experience a short period of sadness, the sorrow that men experience could last for months. Despite inaccurate assumptions that women become more emotional, it is men who bear the most pain when a partnership is terminated, studies have confirmed. One study from the University College in London found that men in their early twenties take the hardest hits towards the end of a relationship. Another study that covered people of different social, economic and cultural backgrounds confirmed the same. One Professor from the US-based Wake Forest University noted that his research has shed light on the association between “non-marital romantic relationships and emotional well-being among men and women on the threshold of adulthood.” Women, it seems, have a stronger

threshold for emotional pain when it comes to romantic relationships. “This is because by that age women may already have a network of close relationships made up of friends and family in addition to a partner,” says the Telegraph report. It has also revealed that young men often lack that kind of support since their romantic partner is the only person that they confide in. They therefore become more “emotionally vulnerable” when that is taken away even if they don’t put their feelings on display. This is especially evident in African communities where companionship takes place before marriage. A culture of bravado among many African men sees most people suffer in silence as a nasty separation takes its toll on them. One Sociology Professor from the London-based University College noted that young men don’t usually confide in each other since their friendships tend to be more competitive than nurturing.

Beach operator: Drowned students ignored warning More on this story at www.capitalfm.co.ke

HAPPY TIMES: Children enjoy their time along Diani Beach. Seven students from Murang’a drowned as they swam in Diani yesterday.

Students from a private school in Murang’a who drowned last evening in Diani could have avoided the tragedy had they heeded the warning of a beach operator. About 56 pupils from Saint Martin’s De Pores Boys School, who were on holiday went out to sea to swim without minders or life guards. Juma Ali who is a beach operator in Diani claims to have warned the students against going into the waters off the Indian Ocean as the storms and tides were high. He said the students ignored his advice. According to him, the tide was high at that time resulting in rough waters. He said there is no information on the dangers of swimming in the ocean when the tide is high and this could have contributed to the calamity. “‘I tried to warn them not to swim

since the tides were very strong but they ignored my advice. It’s very unfortunate that we have not just lost innocent kids but that there is lack of information about the dangers of swimming when the tide is high,” he stated. He emphasised the need to ensure that the incident is taken seriously so that it does not occur again. The other students from the school are currently undergoing psychological counselling. Reports indicate that those who drowned were swept into the sea when the tides suddenly rose and became rough, overwhelming the young swimmers. The sense of panic around Pavillion Beach in Diani was heightened by the fact that only volunteer divers were present to rescue the drowning children and recover bodies.

NEWS BRIEFS un envoy sacked in CAr sex abuse claims The UN envoy to Central African Republic (CAR), Babacar Gaye, has been sacked amid multiple allegations of sexual abuse by peacekeepers. UN chief Ban Ki-moon told reporters that he had requested his resignation. It comes a day after Amnesty International alleged that a 12-year-old girl was raped by a UN peacekeeper. The 10,000-strong UN force, deployed last year to help restore order in CAR, has also faced allegations of sexually abusing street children.

Asange assault inquiry to be dropped Swedish prosecutors will drop their investigation into sexual assault allegations against Julian Assange on Thursday because of the statutes of limitation. The Wikileaks founder still faces the more serious allegation of rape. But prosecutors have run out of time to investigate Mr Assange for sexual assault because they have not succeeded in questioning him. He denies all allegations and has said they are part of a smear campaign. The Australian journalist and activist sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Yemeni refugees troop to Somalia The UN says more than 28,000 refugees have fled from Yemen to Somalia and the breakaway republic of Somaliland, since April. Its newly appointed humanitarian chief for Somalia, Peter de Clercq, said he was concerned about the influx of Yemeni refugees, and Somalis returning home because of the conflict in the Middle Eastern state. There were already more than 200,000 internationally displaced people in Somalia’s north-eastern region of Puntland and Somaliland, in need of food, water and shelter, he said. The two areas are separated from Yemen by the Gulf of Aden. Somalia has been hit by more than two decades of conflict, and many of its citizens had fled to Yemen until it became unstable.

Consumer lobby opposes lifting of ban on GMOs A consumer lobby has strongly opposed the decision by the government to lift a ban on Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) in two months’ time. The Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) claims that the revelations which were announced by Deputy President William Ruto is but riddled with scandals. Cofek Secretary General, Stephen Mutoro claimed they have information that senior government officers have been compromised by global pro-GMO’s companies and foundations, to accept the new and unpalatable position. “We urge the Ethics and AntiCorruption Commission to investigate senior government officers and board members of the National Biosafety Authority from the credible leads we already have,” he said. Mutoro urged the government to tread carefully over lifting the ban on GMOs saying it has been severally linked to toxicity, sterility and infant mortality. He argued: “The latest ban is by the Scotland government. Kenya can’t claim to be wiser.” Speaking yesterday during the 4th National Biosafety Conference at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi, Deputy President William Ruto said the government will rescind the ban in two months.

READY FOR GM: Deputy President William Ruto speaks yesterday at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies where he revealed the state will lift the ban on GM foods in two months.

“We want to put Ruto on notice that Kenyans will not accept lifting of the ban without conclusively addressing the issues which necessitated it in the first place. GMOs are about consumers’ health

and lives,” Mutoro said. According to him, they will write to President Kenyatta and all Cabinet Secretaries to petition them against lifting the ban to satisfy the narrow interests of a few greedy Kenyans.

He further urged Mr. Kenyatta to review his Executive and remove the National Biosafety Authority under the Ministry of Education and put it under the health docket.

44 killed, hundredS injured AS MASSive blAStS rOCk ChineSe CitY At least 44 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 500 injured, following two major explosions in China’s northern port city of Tianjin. Twelve firefighters were among the dead, China’s official Xinhua news agency said as it reported a doubling of the death toll. Two blasts happened in a warehouse storing “dangerous and chemical goods” in the port area of the city. The blasts caused a huge fireball that could be seen from space. Buildings within a 2km radius had windows blown out, office blocks were destroyed and hundreds of cars burnt-out. Images on Chinese media showed local residents and workers fleeing their homes, some of them covered in blood from broken glass and flying debris. As of 12:00 local time, 44 people had died and a total of 520 people had been hospitalised, including 66 in a critical condition. The first

explosion occurred at about 23:30 local time (15:30 GMT) on Wednesday, followed seconds later by another, more powerful blast and a series of smaller explosions. The impact could be felt several kilometres away. The China Earthquake Networks Centre said the magnitude of the first explosion was the equivalent of

detonating three tonnes of TNT, while the second was the equivalent of 21 tonnes. State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said a shipment of explosives had detonated but this has not been confirmed. Senior managers of Ruihai Logistics, which owns the warehouse where the explosion happened, are being questioned by

authorities. One witness, named only as Ms Yang, told local media she was out shopping when “suddenly from behind there was a big fireball and explosion”. “At the time of the explosion the ground was shaking fiercely, nearby cars and buildings were shaking, glass from a few buildings all broke and everyone started to run,” she said. Liu Yue, a 25-year-

old Tianjin resident, said she felt the first blast but didn’t think too much of it. “The second explosion was so powerful that I felt the entire 16-floor-building was shaking,” said Liu, who lives about four kilometers from the site of the blasts. “I thought it was an earthquake! I was extremely scared. I was afraid my family was in danger.” Smoke billows from a factory rocked by twin blasts in Chinese port city of Tianjin. INSET: An injured survivor is gurneyed into hospital following the explosion.

Old Mutual’s majority stake spells relief to UAP customers The successful acquisition of majority stake of UAP by Old Mutual will post a wider variety of the insurers’ products to their customers in bid for better service delivery. UAP Insurance controls a 7.8% market share of Kenya’s insurance industry giving them a strong regional presence. According to them, it will allow their clients to enjoy a wider access across

the East and Central African countries. In June 2012, three Private Equity funds – Aureos Africa Fund, AfricInvest Fund and Swedfund International AB acquired a 40% stake in UAP Insurance for $54.8million from existing investors. “We are working towards creating one group comprising of UAP, Old Mutual and Faulu

Microfinance Bank,” said Peter Ng’eno, Managing Director of the UAP-Old Mutual Group. According to him the move will effectively elevate the business to one of the largest integrated financial services providers in East and Central Africa. He noted that the deal would translate to better access to “a comprehensive and enhanced range of professional

services, from life insurance, general insurance to banking, health insurance and asset management.” Ng’ena, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), said that given the Group’s combined history, expertise and resources, clients can rest assured that all policies, savings and investments are in safe hands. He stated that all current services

Electricity costs to plunge with new Megawatts deal

MORE POWER FOR LESS: The Kenya Power has entered into a deal with local energy firms to supplement 76 megawatts to the existing 2,298 expected lower costs for Kenyans.

Kenya Power has signed power purchase agreements with local companies to add 76 Megawatts (MW) into the national grid under the new agreement. The deal with Akiira Geothermal Limited and Kleen Energy Limited is a series of initiatives that is set to drive down the cost of electricity. “These partnerships and generation projects are crucial towards meeting our goal to reach 70 percent connectivity by 2017 and universal access by 2020,” Kenya Power CEO Ben Chumo explained. Under the new deal, Akiira Geothermal Limited will develop and sell 70 MW from its Kajiadobased geothermal facility to Kenya Power while , Kleen Energy Limited will sell 6 MW of hydropower from its mini hydro plant in Embu. Kenya’s current installed generation capacity stands at

2,298 MW with geothermal power providing 46.4 per cent of the country’s energy, hydro power providing 38.1 per cent, thermal 14.8 per cent and wind 0.4 per cent. The aim of these, among other projects, is to increase the country’s capacity to 5,000 MW. The completion of these generation projects is a crucial part in ensuring that Kenya’s growing economy receives adequate power as the overall cost of electricity continues to fall. Akiira Geothermal Limited is set to construct a transmission line interconnecting the plant with the proposed Suswa substation currently being developed by Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO).

Nestle sued in India for food trade malpractice India government is suing Nestle for $100 million (Sh10.1 billion) over ‘unfair trade practices’ following a scandal involving the firm’s “Maggi” noodles. The government, through its consumer commission (NCDRC), is accusing Nestle of misleading consumers through advertisements related to its Maggi noodles product. The BBC reports that, Maggi was banned in India after

the country’s food safety regulator accused Nestle of not complying with food safety laws. Nestle has challenged the move at the Bombay high court, staying that its products are safe. With control of 80 per cent of India’s instant noodles market they destroyed 400 million packets of Maggi products. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had earlier said that

tests deemed the instant noodles to contain hazardous amounts of lead. Two Indian laboratories recently cleared the noodles, but their findings were dismissed by India’s food safety authority after it was discovered there were lapses in the tests. A verdict on the case from the Bombay high court is pending.

Telecom targets impoverished youths with revolving fund scheme Two persistent problems that affect a significant portion of Kenyan youth are poverty and unemployment. A Kenyan Foundation marked the International Youth day with the launch of a revolving fund scheme targeting populations with no access to micro-credit. “Many young people who wish to start small and medium enterprises lack the capital to do so and unfortunately

financial institutions classify them as high risk borrowers who cannot access financial support,” said Joseph Ogutu, Chairman, Safaricom Foundation during the launch of the fund. Statistical data show 75 per cent of the country’s population is under 30 years of age while 40 percent of the population is jobless, 70 per cent from this are youths. Further, an estimated 800,000 young

Kenyans are released into the job market each year and only a paltry 50,000 get employment. “We believe that through this revolving fund, we will significantly contribute to the reduction of unemployment because we are looking forward to support young people who have exciting ideas but nobody is willing to finance them,” Ogutu added. They chose Junior Achievement Kenya

and Hand in Hand Eastern Africa to manage and grow it into a revolving fund. They will train beneficiaries on entrepreneurship and business literacy, group dynamics, governance and savings after which the recipients will be eligible for micro loans. Junior Achievement Kenya will work with young people aged 18-24 years while Hand in Hand Eastern Africa

will work with persons of 18 years and above. The two organizations already have existing grass root relationships that are crucial for the projects’ success. Both organizations also have expertise in group mobilization, business training, and access to credit and linkages to markets.

You Know You are living in a sicK societY when people upload and applaud violence.

n Kenya, we claim that we are part of the 21st century even though we are yet to demystify most of our outrageous traditional beliefs and myths. It is no secret that Africa is riddled with a culture dictating that women are inferior to men. Worse still, the women lucky enough to be empowered rarely show any interest in defending their own and when they do, the society is quick to refer to them as feminists. While it is right and religious for women to submit to men, let us face it, there is a thin line between submissiveness and male chauvinism. Let us talk about the Mollis clip that managed to divide the opinion of Kenyans last week on whether it was a case of rape, consensual intimacy gone too far or just a stage managed prank by idlers. What started circulating as a hilarious clip unearthed a deeper underlying issue; that of suppression of women and especially the suppression of their right to decide what they want for themselves. From the viral clip, many gender issues emerged with the pertinent ones being the fact that many men are too egoistic to take no for an answer and also the fact that the modern society has created a negative image for women, terming them as more of objects of desire rather than persons. We also cannot ignore the fact that teenagers, especially girls, are delving into sex prematurely. How did our kids end up in the hands of insatiable men and others engaging in sexual acts amongst themselves in matatus on their way home from school?

Before

FASHION scoop

when will

women win the war against sexual violation?

One parent says the problem is that we have laid too much emphasis on the issue of drug abuse and in a bid to distract them; we have ended up feeding them the poison of modern films. This is especially rampant during school holidays where parents opt to stack foreign movies for their kids to watch and keep them busy during the day instead of hanging out with bad crowds. How many times do parents sit down to watch these movies with their children? You would be surprised to find out that popular films such as Sense 8 and Game of Thrones are filled with multiple sexual scenes and with the experimental nature of teenagers and young adults, they are bound to eventually try the scenes out. Unfortunately, young girls go for older and more experienced men after bowing to social and peer pressure to experiment with grown up affairs, only trying to back out when it is too late, the result being incidences such as the mollis clip and others that have not made it into the limelight‌yet. Be it as it may, young women need to be schooled in the art of valuing their bodies and making sound choices. It may take a long time but it could save a dying generation. Dr Chris Hart also says that young men should be schooled in the art of being gentlemen and protectors.

Social media is the in thing and parents have taken it upon themselves to ensure their children are not left behind virtually.

elcoming a newborn has always been an exciting affair, but parents living in this digital era are taking things too far. Back in the previous decades, the most a parent could do in celebration of a newborn was buying a photo album for the adorable baby pictures, which they waited a few months before taking. With the advent of digital devices, access to the internet and the revolutionary social media, the concept of parenting has been turned upside down with children being viewed as trophies than persons to show to the entire world. Nowadays, even before a mother recovers after delivering a child, photos of the child are already awash the internet, especially those born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Social media is the in thing and parents have taken it upon themselves to ensure their children are not left behind virtually. For example Diamond Platnumz newborn daughter Princess Tiffah, who is barely a week old, has close to 50, 000 followers on Instagram. How many followers do you, in your twenties and thirties have on Instagram and other social media accounts? Princess Tiffah joins other children of entertainers and celebrities who have been introduced to the social media world even before going to school, such as DJ Crème De La Crème’s son Jamari who has in a few months amassed thousands of followers as well as fashionista

Sylvia Njoki’s daughter Nielsine. As much as we have to keep up with the fast moving world, we also need to weigh the looming dangers to the use of social media especially when it comes to children. Granted, parents may be the ones running these accounts for their toddlers, but a time will come when the kids grow up and demand control over their accounts. Who then, will protect them from the dangerous virtual world? The internet is especially notorious for cyber bullying in the form of offensive comments and abusive messages. Cyber bullying is worse for children born to celebrities and public figures and this can trigger psychological problems and even suicidal tendencies at worst. Keep in mind that the world closely monitors public figures and trolls them at the slightest emergence of drama. Imagine what a child born to a celebrity would have to go through should their parents become the subject of twitter roasts especially by the dreaded #KOT. Closely related to cyber bullying is cyber stalking; there are more psychotic characters out there than we imagine waiting to prey on innocent souls. With hacking being considered an essential skill nowadays, the children are also at a risk of their accounts being infiltrated and used to post offensive material as well as impersonation though parody accounts. Do you still want to open a social media account for your infant? We think not.

t was a surprise at the Miss Kenya, Earth competitions as Joan Musumba the former Miss University crown holder failed to impress the judges at the finals. The battle it seems was between two KU beauties as Linda Gatere, a fellow student at Kenyatta University won the Miss Kenya Earth title. Elaine Mwangi, from St Paul’s University, Nakuru Campus, secured the Miss Kenya Grand International title and third place went to Eunice Atieno, who will soon be joining Kenyatta University to study sales and marketing. hat does your job entail? Coordinating, innovating and creating new ideas on how to expand and ensure the company grows. How many hours do you work in a day? Depends on the days’ work load. What qualifications do you need for your job? Bachelor’s degree in leadership although one needs to be determined and focused. Was this your dream career? Actually it wasn’t. I wanted to do civil engineering but as I grew up, opportunities changed my dreams. However, I appreciate where I am at the moment. How did you start out?

After participating in Global collaboration for four years I experienced how other people do things and this contributed much to who I am now. What achievements have you had so far? I have managed to open my own school HIP Academy to offer almost free and better education to needy students. I have also invested heavily in agriculture to make sure the students get enough food and the surplus to serve the society. Any challenge you have experienced so far? I am taking every challenge as a blessing and a lesson. Does your job interfere with your social life? It doesn’t, in fact the job motivates me to work very hard, interact with community around the globe and it

moulds me to be more creative and learn how to solve problems. What is the best part of your job? Travelling and meeting successful people across the globe who have achieved their career goals in life. What is the worst part of your job? If I fail to work to meet what is expected of me. Any advice for aspiring youth? Life is a struggle and in life you must have an alternative in that when plan A fails you automatically shift to plan B knowing that with determination and passion, you can be what you want to be so long as you love what you are doing and do it to your best.

Even in real life, Johnny Depp is hard to impress and when he manages to smile, it is nothing more than an inverted scowl. Gay laws: Still waiting for fire and brimstone Mozambique recently overturned an anti-gay law, which has been on the law books since Portuguese colonial times. I am just a bit surprised it happened. From what some people are saying about God’s wrath after the ban on same-sex marriage was overturned, I expected fireballs, locusts and frogs. At the very least thunder and lightning, not golden rays. I don’t see why this could bother anyone. If two people are so happily in love they want to get married, that’s a good thing. Happier people

enjoying freedom equally are good. This doesn’t force you to enjoy it, go to gay marriages or host them if you don’t want to. Your right to be offended is still right where it always was. Your right to be offended doesn’t negate others’ right to get married if they wish. There are far larger, real problems in the world like hunger, pollution, wars and government corruption at all levels. Relax and enjoy life a bit. — Concerned Kenyan, Nairobi

Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger is already on borrowed time Before people come after me with knives and guns, let me make it very clear, I am a die hard Arsenal Fan, have been since 2001-02(from even before we were the Invincibles). And I am saying it loud and clear Mr Wenger, your time is up. Now this doesn’t mean I am taking any credit away from you (well Sir, no one ever can) but you are currently in a time warp. You have refused to accept that as time changes the style should change too.

I know no one understands Arsenal’s football better than you, but Mr Wenger its time to bid goodbye. You are the best thing that happened to Arsenal FC and you will remain the hero of all Arsenal fans. But I can’t see you losing in a game that was invented by you; that’s why Monsieur Wenger you should quit. —Enock Ndayala, Nairobi

Passenga drawn with champs Kitende in EA School Games THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, 2015

Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) boys’ football national champions, Passenga have been drawn with defending champions St. Mary’s Kitende of Uganda in Pool A of East Africa Secondary School games set to kick off Sunday in Huye, Rwanda. Passenga surprised many when they beat Laiser Hill at the national final staged in Machakos to win their first title and despite beating former champions Kisumu Day this year, their form will be put to test when they face the regional bully Kitende. The Ugandan side, which most rivals are accusing of having added advantage due to their education system, which incorporates Form Five and Six, has always been a thorn in the flesh for Kenyan schools in these games. Last year they denied Kenyans the football title when they beat Upper Hill in the final. Passenga will also face

another Uganda test against St.Joseph’s Laibi in addition to the Burundian school LT Gitega, Muhanga, Makongo from Tanzania and hosts TC from Rwanda Passenga will begin their maiden regional games with a match against Gitega on Monday (August 17) then take on Tanzanian side Makongo, St. Joseph’s Laibi (Uganda) But it is their fourth match against Kitende on Thursday that will mostly likely determine their fate even with a match against Muhanga TC Friday to spare. Losing finalists, Laiser Hill drew College Gisenyi of Rwanda, Alliance SS from Tanzania, Burundi’s Nyamata TSS, Masaka SS (Uganda) and Bussere from South Sudan in Pool B. Gor, Ingwe warm up for derby with mixed results AFC Leopards warmed up for the ‘Mashemeji Derby’ this weekend with a shambolic display against Ulinzi Stars when they were piped 1-0, thanks to John Makwata’s header in the first half at the Nyayo National

Stadium on Wednesday evening. It was a display that warranted a thumping had the Robert Matano led side taken their half dozen chances in either halves. The results must however worry

stand-in coach Yusuf Chippo, who is headed for the biggest match in the local football scene, when Ingwe face 14- time Kenyan champions Gor Mahia this Sunday. Earlier in the day K’Ogalo, unbeaten

this season, had brushed aside Ushuru 2-0 at the City Stadium with Ugandan import scoring the 7th minute and substitute Enock Awanda converting from the spot after winning the penalty in the final

20 minutes. The derby will come at a time when Ingwe are on four-match winless streak since head coach Zradvko Logarusic went on strike due to unpaid salaries and allowances.

Judo elections date not yet set, 30 days after collapse of deadline Interim Judo Coordination Board, which was mandated to oversee the election of a new office by July11 is yet to set elections date for a new Judo body almost 30 days after the collapse of the deadline. International Judo Federation (IJF) settled on the date after a successful arbitration. IJF International Affairs Director, Dhouib Hedivisit to Kenya in December 2013 ended the longstanding feud between Kenya Judo Federation and its warring faction, Kenya Judo Association. The board made up of Stephen

Soi, Geoffrey Mwangi, Hans Nyange, Duncan Chemiryo and advocate Jennifer Shamala came into existence on 16th, December and were initially meant to come up with a new office before March 2014. According to Soi, the board’s activities are being dragged by IJF which wants further amendment be done to the local Judo body’s constitution forwarded to them a few month a ago as was recommended to align with IJF statute. “We sent our document to IJF and it will be confirmed

during the general assembly; once that is done then we will have elections,” said Soi. “IJF want things to be done the right way. They want some changes, like the financial year report to be included. We are working on that,” added Soi added. Former chairman of the defunct Kenya Judo Federation Mwangi Mbuto led the other slinter group who were both claiming leadership of the association. Soi’s side was accusing the other group of financial improprieties which resulted to the teams

heading to court to in a bid to help solve their differences. As a result, two officials, secretary general Shadrack Maluki and treasurer David Busolo, are currently being investigated by EACC for alleged embezzlement of Sh5.7 million. In his visist, Hedi, a Tunisian with over 20 years’ experience in arbitration of sports feuds asked the wrangling parties to ensure that the pending cases in court, except those involving financial improprieties all be withdrawn.

World Anti-Doping Agency president against nation bans Banning nations for persistent doping would damage athletics and is not an option, says World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) president Sir Craig Reedie. There have been calls for the worstoffending countries to be expelled from competition if they cannot control doping among their athletes. It follows recent allegations of widespread cheating in the sport. But Reedie said such bans would be “blunt-edged” and “damage the innocent as well as the assumed-to-be guilty”. He told BBC World Service: “We’re not entitled to do it, we don’t have these powers.” “I would hope increased efforts, whether it’s research or education, in testing athletes at the right time will help us catch cheats, and that people will begin

to realise that cheating in sport doesn’t make any sense.” Wada will begin an independent investigation after the Sunday Times published data from 12,000 blood tests involving 5,000 athletes, which it says reveals an “extraordinary extent of cheating”. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) responded by describing claims of widespread doping in athletics as “sensationalist and confusing”. Meanwhile, the IAAF confirmed on Tuesday that 28 athletes who competed at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships had been provisionally suspended after returning “adverse findings” from retested samples. Reedie, a former president of the British

Olympic Association, said the re-testing was “very significant” and would allow samples to be re-examined “in the light of better testing techniques”. “If they are able to detect somebody who cheated all those years ago, the IAAF says it will reallocate medals,” he added. “That’s good news for clean athletes and we are in the business of protecting clean athletes.” However, one of the blood scientists who analysed the leaked test data for the Sunday Times investigation has questioned whether the IAAF has done all it can to catch drug cheats in recent years. In an open letter to IAAF presidential candidate Lord Coe - who said the story was a “declaration of war” on his sport - Michael Ashenden also defended his role in the revelations.

17 foreign-based players for Stars’ date with Zambia Williamson puts hope in old guards for Chipolopolo tie

H

arambee Stars coach Bobby Williamson has called up 17 foreign-based players for next month’s match against Zambia. Skipper Victor Wanyama who turns out for English Premier League side Southampton leads the list which also includes Dennis Oliech and MacDonald Mariga. Others are dependable goalkeeper Arnold Origi who plays for Norwegian side Lillestrom and USbased defender Lawrence Olum. Kenya face the Chipolopolo on September 6 in Nairobi, in their second match of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Stars top the Group E standings

with one point after drawing 1-1 with Congo in their opening encounter. Other players called up for the tie include Allan Wanga, who recently completed a move to Tanzania giants Azam. Wanga has been included despite being bereaved following the death of his mother early this week. Amazulu’s Paul Were and David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng’ are also in the list. “The coach has given the preliminary list of foreign-based players within the 15 day window so that we can communicate to their clubs for their release,” explained Football Kenya Federation CEO, Michael Esakwa. “The entire list will be released in due course

but we just had to ensure that no player in the coach’s plans is unavailable due to late notification to their club,” Esakwa noted, adding that the federation has already embarked on preparations for the match. Others are Zambia-based David ‘Calabar’ Owino, Jacob Kelli, Ayub Timbe and Anthony Akumu as well as South Africa-based defender Brian Mandela. Clifton Miheso and Johanna Omollo are also included. But the final word and choice rests with the coach. “Coach Williamson will release the list of locally-based players by next week so that the squad is complete to report to camp on August 31st,” concluded Esakwa.
