Eyes on South Sudan as Obama deadline expires
E
ast African leaders are meeting in Addis Ababa Ethiopia today in last minute efforts to broker a peace agreement between warring South Sudan factions as the deadline to sign such a deal lapses. South Sudan is under intense international pressure to end the 20-month civil war which has seen tens of thousands of people killed and millions others displaced from their homes. US President Barack Obama last month urged regional leaders to find a strategy and bring the warring rivals to an agreement that will end the war. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Power sharing mooted as South Sudan peace deal is discussed From Page 1
“Unfortunately, the situation continues to deteriorate. The humanitarian situation is worsening. The possibilities of renewed conflict in a region that has been torn by conflict for so long and has resulted in so many deaths needs addressing,” Obama told the East African leaders at a meeting he convened on the South Sudan crisis in Addis Ababa last month. “We don’t have a lot of time. The conditions on the ground are getting much much worse. The goal is to make sure the US and IGAD are aligned on a strategy going into this endgame on peace talks. Now is time for a breakthrough,” he said. And today, the regional eight-nation bloc IGAD, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development will seek to have the deal signed. President Uhuru Kenyatta who chairs IGAD, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir all flew to Ethiopia to join host
Hailemariam Desaglem in brokering the peace deal. Other players who have also been involved in trying to reach a peaceful agreement for the warring parties are the African Union, the United Nations, China, Britain and Norway. The leaders last night held a five-hour closed-door meeting in Addis Ababa attended by both Kiir and Machar. IGAD is proposing a power-sharing arrangement between President Kiir and Machar as part of a compromise peace plan. South Sudanese President Salva Kiir had earlier threatened to boycott the meeting arguing that it will not be possible to strike an effective deal because rebel forces have split. But he was among those pictured to have landed in Addis Ababa and was ready for the talks. His nemesis Riek Machar is also attending the negotiations. President Obama’s meeting
with the regional leaders last month agreed to build support for a decisive action against President Kiir and Mr Machar if they reject the ultimatum to end the carnage by today. Diplomats have warned that any failure to sign a peace deal could trigger “serious consequences” for the rival leaders. “We expect the principals of the parties to negotiate in good faith and sign an agreement,” IGAD and the international mediators said in a statement. The civil war in South Sudan began in December 2013 following an acrimonious fall-out between former Vice President Riek Machar and his boss Salva Kiir who accused him of planning a coup. It has since been marked by widespread atrocities committed by both sides, dividing the poor nation along ethnic lines.

Africa’s population will quadruple within the next century, fertile people are to blame Africa’s population will quadruple within the next 100 years, studies have confirmed. An increase in the number of births across the globe will see the world’s population rise to 11 billion over the same period, up from the current 7.3 billion. Africa, it seems, will see the highest jump in numbers. Projections from the United Nations (UN) estimate that unless there is an extraordinary fertility decline in parts of sub-Saharan Africa in the coming years, these numbers will continue to grow. According to John Wilmoth, Director of the United Nations Population Division, Africa’s population growth is due to unrelenting high levels of fertility. In Nigeria, for instance, the high fertility rate will see the country’s current

numbers quadruple within the next century. Nigeria happens to be the continent’s most-populous country, and is home to 182 million people. By the year 2100, that number will rise to 752 million. The data was released during a meeting of the American Statistical Association in Seattle. Wilmoth said that despite worries about congestion and unemployment, the numbers are a sign of human progress. He explained that rapid declines in child mortality, coupled with a global increase in life expectancy, have been instrumental in driving population growth. “Sometimes people forget to see this as a sign of our success,” he added.
A thug was last night lynched after his attempt to rob a motorbike was thwarted in Biafra area, Nairobi. The lone suspect had hired the rider to the area when he tried to wrestle him off. It was then that an alarm was raised alerting the public who stoned him to death. Police arrived long after he had been killed. Elsewhere in Kabete, a man was found dead in his house in what police suspect to be a possible suicide. Police say they suspect the victim committed suicide after a quarrel with his family. In Dandora, a guard killed a man in a quarrel. He has since been arrested.

Support for Ms Rousseff has fallen to single-digit figures in recent polls. Many voters have accused her of failing to stamp out corruption and blame her for the economy’s worst slump in 25 years. Marchers took over Copacabana beach in Rio and also demonstrated outside congress in the capital Brasilia. Many wore the yellow shirts of the Brazilian football team, and sang the national anthem, carrying banners saying “Dilma Out”. Police said about 137,000 people took part, but tens of the thousands of others were also involved in a demonstration in Sao Paulo. President Kenyatta thanked leaders who supported the efforts by the government to bring an end to the production and consumption of illegal alcohol in the country. He said illegal alcohol has broken down the youth and families in many parts of the country, adding that no effort will be spared in the fight against its production and use. “When you turn the youth into addicts of illegal alcohol you are crippling the society and the whole country,” he said. US ‘warns China over covert operatives US government has warned China over its use of agents on its soil to put pressure on Chinese expatriates, according to a New York Times report. Beijing is running a global campaign to repatriate Chinese fugitives and recover illicit funds, the newspaper said citing unnamed US officials. The country’s State Department has now resorted to warning Chinese officials about the activities, the report says. Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the US next month. The alleged programme - reportedly codenamed Operation Fox Hunt by Beijing - is separate from China’s routine spying activities against the US. The New York Times said the undercover agents were working under the direction of China’s Ministry of Public Security and probably getting into the country on tourism or trade visas. Their tactics reportedly include threats to family members who remain in China. More than 930 suspects around the world have been repatriated to China since last year under the programme, the newspaper said, citing the Ministry of Public Security. Fugitives sought under ‘Operation Fox Hunt’ are believed to be prominent expatriates, sought for economic corruption or what China considers political crimes.

COTU calls for termination of Kenya’s sugar pact with Uganda
On Tuesday, August 18, 2015, Britam is set to unveil a product dubbed the Platinum Drawdown Plan. The plan will target retirees and as a flexible investment plan that allows them to reinvest their pension funds for more returns. The new plan comes hot on the heels of the Britam Umbrella Pension Scheme, a facility that was launched earlier this year in a bid to reach out to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) without occupational pension schemes.
Following its latest fuel price announcement, the Energy Regulatory Commission has warned petroleum retail station dealers of increased cases of fraud. Conmen and swindlers, says the ERC, have been going to distributors, purporting to monitor prices on behalf of the Commission. ERC Director General Eng. They can do so by sending the message: “staff (space) ID Number of the person inspecting” to 0707 667 623, Eng. Ng’ang’a explained.

DIPLOMATIC TIES: President Uhuru Kenyatta addresses Ugandan parliamentarians. He later signed a deal allowing sugar imports from the country.
Central Organization for Trade Unions (COTU) called for the cancellation of a sugar trade deal signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni. The General Secretary Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation Francis Wangara noted that they will take indefinite action if the president fails to withdraw the agreement. “We urge the president to reject that deal and other trade options. Any trade agreement should be one that benefit the economy, must be promoting the industry that we already have, must be protecting the jobs of the works we represent,’’ he said. COTU want the multi-billion deal made public to give Kenyans confidence that the deal was signed lawfully and it’s for their benefit,
“As workers, we now advise Mr Uhuru that this deal will not only hurt the economy but will also facilitate the death of our local sugar industries as it happened to our once viable textile and leather Industries which collapsed due to importing of cheap second hand clothes and shoes,” Wangara said. The union leader however accused powerful sugar cartels in Kenya of using import controls to defeat competition making consumer prices artificially high in the region’s biggest market. The union claims that the government’s bailout programme seems to be unconvincing as it goes against the president’s pledge to restore Mumias Sugar Company. According to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority
(AFFA), Uganda produces about 465,000 tons of sugar against a consumption of 320,000 tones, leaving it with a 145,000 tones surplus while Kenya produces 650,000tones of sugar against a demand of 860,000 tons leaving a 210,000 ton deficit made through imports. The signed agreement clears the way for Kenyan traders to export beef to Uganda under similar terms depending on commercial ties between Kampala and East Africa’s largest economy. To protect local millers, Kenyan Authorities have in the past couple of years capped sugar imports at 300,000 tons. The agreements were signed during Kenyatta’s three-day visit to Kampala where he held diplomatic talks with Mr Museveni and addressed the Ugandan parliament.

Farmer eyes partnership with University to train locals From the sale of mushrooms and its flourishing appetite in the export market, a farmer in Eldoret has managed to build a training centre for over 50 farmers. Mr Daniel Rotich earns some Sh70, 000 a day from mushrooms and is calling interested farmers embrace its cultivation. “This is where the market is. If farmers can open their eyes and see the world of opportunity
that awaits them in mushroom production.” He said. His success : his partnership with an agronomist whose specialty is fungi culture and mushroom cultivation as he was not fully acquainted with growing the crop. He is considering to partner with Moi University to offer certificate and diploma courses on mushroom technology. According to Rotich, for this lucrative business to succeed, is to ensure
the environment you plant is as natural as possible. “People are very much sensitive about mushrooms especially their growing conditions which seem to be laborious but once perfected you are in business.” He said. China led in mushroom production but declined due to human factors like desertification and climate change resulting into its demand globally. These factors to him have been a window of
opportunity in the world market inspiring him to train more farmers to delve deep into the practice. Unlike the natural mushroom which takes hours to mature they are harvested at two weeks old and packed into 250 grams packets, each going for Sh 250. To meet the highly increasing demand of the crop in the Middle East and United Arab Emirates, Rotich has employed more than 20 casual
laborers to assist him. The harvested mushrooms are sold either dry or fresh and the farm goes through a rigorous and meticulous process of growing and dried the mushrooms. According to him, what they lack are numbers to guarantee ourselves of a consistent supply of the crop. “Once we get that right, we will never have to worry about where to take our market. I invite farmers to enroll in this project,” he said.

Having launcHed tHeir twelve track album yesterday at citam buruburu, t412 is ready to spread tHeir wings, inspire and spread tHe gospel tHrougH music.
GOSPEL GROUP T412 READY TO RUMBLE Who is T412? This is a contemporary Christian music group made up of Clive Otieno (singer), Eutychus Tepkenysiroroi, Eutie (singer), Felix Milome (rapper), Ian Muhanji (rapper) and Kelvin Musyoka (rapper). They derive their name from 1st Timothy 4:12 which says ‘do not let anyone despise you because you are young but set an example unto the believers in speech, faith, love, conduct and purity’ Tell us about your musical journey? T412 was formed in 2011 as a dance group by a group of friends at Christ Is the Answer Ministries (CITAM), Buruburu. The dancers would at times spend practice sessions free styling and singing over beats and in no time they decided to pursue music. Who produces your music and why? Our music is produced by Davis Ngalah aka ‘Ngalizo Mtu kawaida’ of Box House Media who offered to record our music at a minimal fee due to financial constraints. How would you describe your genre of music? Why gospel and not secular? We do contemporary gospel music laced in rap. We are a spiritual group and believe in the gospel of Christ and that is why we chose to praise him in song. What other genres are you interested in doing or have you done? Our versatility speaks for itself in our debut album, our mix tape and the album we have just launched. Anyone who listens to it will definitely notice the effort we have made to sound different in every track. What inspired your before after
album? Before and after was inspired by life and our journey in life and in music. It symbolizes a lot of things. Before and after salvation, before and after we began music and a lot more. Before After springs from the hope that although we don’t know what may happen tomorrow, we know who holds the future and since He has been faithful time and time Before He will also do it in the After. How do you manage to stay together as a group? Are you all born again? Once you are focused on whatever path you take and seek God’s guidance in all that you do staying together is not a problem. Yes we are all born again. Which Kenyan artiste (s) would you like to work with? We do not discriminate thus will work with any like-minded gospel artistes as long as they are ready and willing to work with us. What challenges have you faced as a new act venturing into the music industry? Financial constraints were our very first challenge. We all know that as much as you may have a brilliant idea, putting the idea into practice without finances would be a far-fetched idea. In our case, financing our recordings was a challenge but we thank God we finally did and have an album out. Where do you want to be in the next 5 years? We believe we are going places with our music. Our aim is not only to entertain but to transform worldwide generations to be God fearing and set good examples to other generations. We hope to have grown musically and spiritually in the next 5 years.

James and Janet’s wedding
s it a marriage or a wedding? The contention between the issue of ‘marriage’ and ‘wedding’ has haunted mankind for the longest time. Some subscribe to the belief that for a marriage to exist, a wedding has to take place first while others argue that a wedding is just a formality. Well, James and Janet have tasted the best of both worlds. Their journey in love started off more than a decade ago when they met while serving in the Christian ministry and eventually the two decided to move in together, and that is how it has been for the past fifteen years. So why did the couple decide to officiate their already thriving marriage? “We decided to come to church to cement our relationship as well as to establish an even firmer foundation for our love,” James told X Access. “Holding a wedding was actually a joint decision,” James added when we asked the couple about the proposal. It was, however, clear that both parties were excited about announcing their love before man and God. “Our love is not a secret,” said Janet. True to their word, the couple announced their vows before hundreds of friends, relatives and associates on Saturday as the Bishop sanctified their union in church and declared James and Janet man and wife. There was a twist of events when the Bishop asked the couple to add some of their own promises to the cliché ’till do us part’. Although caught
off guard, James added that he would always treasure Janet while Janet wisely promised to be the capable wife as described in the book of Proverbs. When the time to kiss the bride came, James did it in style: a hug first, then a peck on Janet’s cheeks and finally, a kiss on the lips. We would have expected James and Janet not to have an entourage of brides maids, grooms men, page boys and flower girls but we were pleasantly surprised when we counted five brides maids, three grooms men, seven flower girls and five page boys. Speaking of color, we sought to establish the reason as to why the couple settled on orange and brown as their theme color. “Orange is a symbol of quality, and we like having quality in our lives,” responded Janet. “The reason for
choosing brown to accompany orange is because the two colors match perfectly,” she added. A Kikuyu wedding is never complete without the Mugithi session at the reception and the MC made sure that everyone seeking to dance alongside the newlyweds and their bridal party had a chance to do so by rolling out two merry go rounds. It was soon dusk and after speeches by representatives from both the bride and groom’s families, presentation of gifts and cutting of the wedding cake, it was time to go home although the friends and relatives left half-heartedly, seeing how colorful a ceremony that James and Janet’s wedding was. The couple will not leave for a honeymoon but promise to spend quality time together. Congratulations James and Janet.

Culture meets art at ‘Prokraft’ Africa’s exhibition
P
roKraft Africa embarked on a journey to celebrate local talent and African culture by holding its first Digital Art Gallery dubbed ‘gravity’ in an exhibition that attracted hundreds of exhibitors and art enthusiasts alike. Gravity (The Black Edition) ran from 30th June and ended this past weekend at ProKraft Studios in Blue Violets Plaza in Kilimani having showcased a wide range of artistic talent. The Black Edition of Gravity seeks to reflect the dynamism of art, but also the creativity of the current Kenyan art scene. “We like to think that black is despondent; because we are told that black is melancholic. Synonymous with being immersed in a hopeless state. We have to know that black is amorphous. The darkened condition that welcomes the light,” noted Edel Were, ProKraft Africa’s consultant. The exhibition featured series artwork from Jeffery Otieno, Joe Makeni, Mutua Matheka, Osborne Macharia and Thandiwe Muriu. Through this exhibition artists aim to highlight the blank slate from which our creativity is drawn. To better understand the strength that is emitted from darkness, the unapologetic bravado of its isolation; that inspires imagination. Black is the bountiful beauty that one least expects to illuminate imagination. With the theme being Experience Black…Experience Gravity, the art exhibition came to a close with a success story that bordered on the beauty and eminence of African rich culture, African art and African art pieces.
It is all smiles from the artists.
DANCE AND LAUGHTER AT KIDS FASHION EVENT T
he Michael Joseph centre was lit up not only by the exquisite art pieces but also by Brenda Kamari, Eddah Mungai and Pipita who were the masters of ceremony at the Kids fashion weekend. It would not have been enjoyable without some music. Halisi the band did some great hits like Awinja and Brikicho. They also managed to get the attention of
the audience by doing Kadogo which is their own composition. Other performances were from August the band and Young Angels which is a kid’s dance group. It was all laughter when 2mbili, a stand-up comedian took to the stage with his humorous jokes. It was truly a great way to wind up a weekend with fashion, fun and laughter.

Eric Omondi goes untamed again
A
t last year’s edition of Eric Omondi untamed, the comedian pranked Kenyans with a Lupita look alike and almost got away with it. This past weekend at the Eric Omondi untamed event, ‘Obama’s homecoming’ was his main focus and yes, he nailed it. The make-up was good, the jokes were naughty and untamed and the delivery of his speech (as Obama) was on point. This was comedy at its best, we just can’t wait to see what he has lined up for his next untamed event.

Solving students unrest by banning mock exams implausible I find the Education CS’ explanation and diagnosis for the prevalent unrests in high schools quite hollow and ambiguous. Mock exams cannot be an adequate, anterior and
sufficient cause for the frequent student’s strikes we witness in school these days, neither can banning mock be the ideal diagnosis as Mr. Kaimenyi wants us believe. Mr. Kaimenyi seems
to be relying on hypothetical and prima facie evidence verbosely presented to him by his underlings and school managements and not well researched and tested empirical evidence to

ascertain the primal cause of this anomaly The minister needs more explanation than that which school management and teachers possible give because definitely they will provide

Parents are to blame for unrests in schools, drug addiction and indiscipline The many cases of unrests in schools, indiscipline and instances of drug use among students are a worrying trend and should be dealt with fast and swiftly. I believe most parents in this age and time are to blame for raising up children whose priorities are nowhere near achieving academic excellence only whilst obeying school rules and regulations. Our schools are operating without the goodwill of the parents when it comes to matters discipline. Charity begins at home, but when parents are not keen on punishing
their children for wrongdoing, the teachers’ hands are tied thus they cannot administer punishment to these kids. With time, the children get used to the fact that no one can punish them and end up engaging in acts of drug abuse, indiscipline and other atrocities. As parents, let us all arise and free ourselves from the shackles of blackmail and guilt of disciplining our children and secure a bright future for them. —Suffocate Mkenya, Nairobi
Opposition leaders need to stop politicizing everything for their own personal gain It has emerged that opposition leaders are fighting policies that benefit Kenyans for the sake of furthering their personal goals. This has got to stop! These buggers can politicize anything if they are allowed to roam free. Some of these fools act like they need a shot in the head from a Minnesota Dentist (rest in peace Cecil the lion).
Our MPs and opposition leaders need to understand that getting elected is not about putting down good policies and dog-piling on sustainable initiatives. They need to see that their politics should take a back seat when the needs of the less fortunate are at stake. —Dennis L., Nairobi

Shedu who missed his side’s 1-1 draw against Tusker FC over the weekend is currently recuperating at the Guru Nanak Hospital in Nairobi after he was taken ill Sunday morning. Shedu, a former Bandari tactician has had a chronic foot injury which he termed as ‘unbearable’ pain. “The pain is unbearable. I had a bad headache all night and I was brought here by my family,” he said. He is expected to spend at least three days in hospital before he can be discharged as Doctors
continue to monitor his blood pressure. Elsewhere, Gor Mahia’s striker Michael Olunga’s two goals last Saturday against Nairobi City Stars took him to within four points of scorer Jesse Were of Tusker United. Meddie Kagere is third on the standing with 13 goals, Ulinzi Stars’ John Makwata is fourth with 10 while Ali Abondo (Gor Mahia) and Mungai Kiongera (KCB) ties on fifth with nine goals each.

‘Where is Eva Carneiro?’ Costa and Cahill injuries prompt backlash online
PUNCHED: Gary Cahill of Chelsea bleeds out awaiting medical attention after suffering a nose bleed during their Man City match at Etihad. INSET: Missing first team doctor Eva Carneiro was branded ‘naive’ by Coach Mourinho.
Gary Cahill had blood pouring out of his nostrils. Diego Costa lay flattened on the grass after taking a mighty whack and even John Terry appeared to be nursing a problem. Barely 45 minutes into life without the pitch side assistance of Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn, and Chelsea were facing a medical meltdown. Cahill was the unfortunate recipient of a stray punch from stand-in stopper Asmir Begovic, while Costa took an unwelcome elbow from Fernandinho. First-team doctor Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn had their roles stripped back after rushing to treat Eden Hazard late on during the Blues’ season opener against Swansea. Jose Mourinho branded them “naïve”, with Chelsea briefly reduced to nine men (Thibaut Courtois had already been sent off) as Hazard had to leave the pitch as a result of the treatment.
Carneiro hit back with a post on Facebook. The club took swift action. Promoted duo Chris Hughes and Steven Hughes did their best to deal with the carnage at the Etihad, but it wasn’t enough: the City health team had to step in to help. Fans on twitter took to rants during and after the games, @FootballFact101 said: Chelsea doesn’t have enough medical staff on the bench to deal with Cahill and Costa’s injuries...City’s medical team to the rescue lol Another, @AMOKC1OO1 “Somewhere Eva Carneiro is laughing while Cahill’s bloody nose is treated and Costa’s given a head bandage.” One @Muzziozcan asked, “Where is Eva when you need her? Cahill broken nose! Diego Costa on the floor!!! The players obviously miss her as much as we do.”
More KPL coaches quit to part ways with clubs Three Premier League coaches have so far stepped down in the past one week to add to the mass exodus of coaches from their respective clubs as the season advances. Mathare United Stanley Okumbi is the latest tactician to hop out of the hot seat and the most stressing job in the sporting world.
Okumbi who stepped down from his job after losing 1-3 to Ushuru on Sunday evening blamed his players’ for the team’s poor form that has seen the club lose their last two consecutive matches. Okumi followed Tim Bryett who resigned from his position as Thika United head coach over the weekend. Until
his resignation, Bryett who took over from John Kamau who coached seven matches without a win. Former City Stars tactician blamed the poor playing surface at Thika Municipal stadium for his resignation from the club. “I encourage everyone in the club to pursue my vision and move to a
better training ground that matches the playing surface. Last week, AFC Leopards assistant coach, Yusuf Chippo resigned from the club, citing poor working condition after Ingwe failed to pay their employees in time. Head coach Zdravko Lugarusic who had gone missing mad e a shock
return to the technical bench after Ingwe management announced that Ezekiel Akwana will take over. The month of July was not rosy for some coaches: Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno lost his job at Sony Sugar last month same as Francis Baraza who also parted ways with Muhoroni Youth.

Big blow for Malkia Strikers with Maiyo’s ankle injury Kenya National Women’s Volleyball team has suffered a major setback after opposite hitter Lydia Maiyo picked up an ankle injury in Japan. With just four days before the start of FIVB women’s world Cup on August 22 Maiyo twisted her right ankle over the weekend after colliding with another player in their training ahead of today’s friendly match against Hitachi Rivale. Setter Jane Wacu sat out of the weekend training with a cold same as center blocker and captain Praxedes Agala who has blisters on her left leg. At the same time, Japan based Kenyan Coach Godfrey
Owese has been included in the teams’ technical bench. Owese is former KCB player on a Japanese passport. He will join the David Lung’aho led team that left the country last week for a week long boot camp in Japan. Owese experience will come in handy for the National team who are seeking their first win at the world games in five attempts. His experience especially in analysis and Asian games will be vital for Kenya who will attempt to book an early Olympic slot should they finish top two in the 12 Nation round-robin championship. This is the second time Owese will be giving a
helping hand to his mother country having relocated to Japan years ago. In 2011 he was in the Kenya’s technical bench led by Paul Bitok and Lung’aho as his assistant at the last world games. Meanwhile Pay television provider StarTimes will broadcast all the Malkia Striker matches. They acquired the rights to air a number of Volleyball Championships including the World Cup in addition to the Bundesliga and Italian Serie A leagues. “The content acquisition of FIVB world Cup will enable Kenyans cheers the women’s Volleyball team,” said StarTimes Vice President Mark Lisboa.

IAAF denies blocking publication of doping study
HUMAN STRENGTH: 4 X 4 athletes compete at a past IAAF Championship. The body has denied allegations of blocking a study that exposed doping activities.
World Athletics’ governing body has denied allegations of blocking the publication of a study that indicated a third of top athletes confessed to violating anti-doping rules. The Sunday Times (UK) said the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) suppressed the survey, conducted at the 2011 Daegu World Championships but the IAAF insisted it had “never vetoed publication of this article.” Meanwhile, a German TV documentary claims four leading Russian athletes could face bans. Responding to the Sunday Times
story, the IAAF said that “this is not a new story”, adding that a similar claim was initially made on German TV in 2013. The IAAF played no role in the study but said it was a “social science-based survey” conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and a team of researchers at the athletes’ village in Daegu, South Korea. However the IAAF did have the power to veto its publication by Wada in return for allowing access to the competitors at Daegu. The University of Tubingen in Germany, who conducted the study, said: “The IAAF’s
delaying publication for so long without good reason is a serious encroachment on the freedom of publication.” A leaked copy of the full study has been seen by The Sunday Times and the German broadcaster ARD/ WDR. On Sunday, the broadcaster said four Russian athletes and four officials face suspension if their national federation is unable to clear up suspicions of wrongdoing. The IAAF says it had “serious reservations” about the “interpretation of the results” made by the research group and submitted their concerns, but got no response.
Police team puts more pressure on ‘Warriors’ Kenya Police continues to exert pressure on hockey leaders Butali Sugar Warriors despite a slim 1-0 away victory in Nakuru over the weekend. Moses Cheplait scored a brace from the penalty spot for Police in their 2-1 win over Park Road 2-1 over the weekend to keep pace with Butali who has controlled the table for the better art of the season.
Both teams have only lost once this season though Butali has played three more matches (11) to Police’s nine. Butali’s 1-0 win over Sikh Nakuru took their point tally to 28, four ahead of 2013 champion’s Kenya Police, now second on the table with 24. Cheplait who struggled with injury last season gave Police the lead in
the 12th minute after Richard Birir had missed a golden chance in the seventh minute. Cheplait’s effort was cancelled out by Brian Mwangi who scored the equalizer in the 33 minute before 2012 top scorer (Cheplait) stepped forward in the 61st minute to drive home his second and the winner from a penalty flick after Park Road defence failed to deal with Police

BACK AT THE TOP: Andy Murrays win over Djokovic in Montreal will put him back at number two in the ATP leader-board. This was his first win over Djokovic since 2013 Wimbledon Final.
Murray ends eight-match losing streak in Montreal with Djokovic Andy Murray will return to second in the ATP ranking after he ended an eight-match losing run against Novak Djokovic, He beat the world number one for the first time since 2013 to win the Montreal final. The historic win is expected to help him overtake Roger Federer in Monday’s new ATP rankings and reclaim position two for the first time since 2013. The Rogers Cup is the British number one’s fourth title of the year, his 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory coming in three hours. A first win over the Serb since the 2013 Wimbledon final will be a huge boost
for Murray before the US Open starts in New York on 31 August. The Scot dominated from the baseline as he claimed an 11th Masters title. The 28-year-old broke in the second game of the deciding set and held to establish a 3-0 lead before saving seven break points in a pivotal 18-minute fifth game to maintain his break advantage at 4-1. Djokovic, chasing a 25th Masters title, saw off three championship points at 5-2 before Murray served out for the match. He dedicated the victory to his coach Amelie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday.
“I’m not sure she will have stayed up to watch this one but, Amelie, this one’s for you,” said Murray, who won his 35th career title. In an absorbing, high-quality match, both players produced exquisite shots but it was Murray who dictated play, forcing a total of 19 break points on the Djokovic serve. It was the first time Murray had beaten Djokovic over the full distance in a three-set Masters match, and it was his first win on a hard court over the Wimbledon champion since the US Open final in 2012.

helsea’s Manager Jose Mourinho has defended his decision to substitute Captain John Terry at half-time in the 3-0 loss at Manchester City over the weekend. The 34-year-old was replaced by Kurt Zouma while Manchester City led 1-0 - the first time he has ever been taken off by Mourinho in the Premier League. The Chelsea boss confirmed that Terry was not injured and that tactics were behind his decision to replace him. “It was clear to me Zouma has to play,” said Mourinho after Sunday’s game.
Terry has won four league titles, five FA Cups, one Champions League and one Europa League during 17 years at Stamford Bridge. The former England captain fell out of favour under previous managers Roberto Di Matteo and Rafael Benitez but played every minute of every league match las season under Mourinho skippering Chelsea to their first Premier League title since 2009-10. Mourinho said in May that Terry would have left Chelsea without him. “I don’t know if you asked questions to Rafa Benitez, Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, to the ones that never played him,”
added Mourinho when asked about his decision to bring off his captain against City. “I’m the one you shouldn’t ask because I’m the one that plays with John in every game.” He quipped. He remarked: “I made John captain. I recovered John from a difficult situation with other managers. I brought my captain off and he was on the bench and still captain on the bench because the armband is just an armband. I can tell you he was not dancing in the dressing room and I can also tell you he was not having a bad reaction.”
