Opposition in rallies to push for details of Uganda sugar deal The political bickering over the deal Kenya signed with Uganda to allow her landlocked neighbour export sugar into the country is set to continue. This comes after the opposition party ODM announced its plans to hold rallies in Western region, to put pressure on the government to make public the details of the deal. The trade pact that will see Kenya also export milk and meat to Uganda has been the subject of fierce political exchanges involving leaders from both divides; government and opposition. After MPs from western region turned down President Uhuru Kenyatta’s invite to State House to discuss contentious issues in the pact, Deputy President William Ruto over the weekend pitched tent in the region to convince locals that the deal means well for the country. But ODM now wants to counter Ruto’s impact with what they say is expressing solidarity with sugar farmers whom they claim the agreement will hit most. “Beginning tomorrow, we will move to the ground in Western, Nyanza and Coast and all other canegrowing zones to stand in solidarity

with the farmers,” said ODM’s Deputy Chairman Paul Otuoma, who read the party’s statement at the end of a two-day retreat at Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos. The rallies have been planned for Awendo tomorrow then Bungoma and Busia on Thursday. The ODM brigade will then pitch tent in Kakamega on Friday. Other sugar growing-zones targeted in similar rallies include Muhoroni, Kibos, Chemelil, all in Kisumu County, parts of Rift Valley, Narok and Kwale. The areas are key voting blocks for the opposition and the move is largely seen as solidifying their bases amid Jubilee onslaught. The Jubilee coalition has been making inroads in the western Kenya region, with the Sh1 billion injected as part of the Mumias Sugar Company bailout project being seen as President Kenyatta’s attempt to win the hearts of residents in a region considered a political stronghold of the opposition team, CORD. Deputy President William Ruto while on a 3-day tour of the Western Kenya over the weekend challenged ODM’s Raila Odinga to pay millions of shillings he allegedly owes Mumias Sugar Company and desist

RALLIES BEGIN: ODM Deputy Chairman Paul Otuoma addresses the press at the conclusion of the party’s two-day retreat at Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos County yesterday. The party has announced it will hold rallies across the country to put pressure on the government to make public the details of the sugar deal recently signed with Uganda.

from politicizing the sugar industry. “Those playing sugar politics to gain political mileage will not succeed, they are the same people who brought Mumias Sugar to its knees and are now purporting to champion its cause,” he said in Matungu, Kakamega County on Sunday.

Ruto’s visit came in the wake of protests from local leaders who have argued the deal is not good for the local cane farmers. He was accompanied by top Jubilee politicians including Majority Leaders in the National Assembly and Senate, Aden Duale and Kindiki

Kithure respectively. Prof Kindiki criticised the Western Parliamentary caucus for snubbing a meeting with President Kenyatta last week.Kindiki said the meeting was aimed at finding a solution the myriad problems faced by cane farmers in the region.

RAILA DENIES OWING MUMIAS Ministry launches probe into pupils’ drowning The ministry of education has launched investigations to establish whether indeed teachers from the St Martins Educational Centre in Murang’a, ignored warnings not to venture into the Indian Ocean last Wednesday, owing to the high tides that eventually caused the 7 pupils to drown. Sources indicate that disciplinary measures could be taken against the teachers should they be found culpable of letting the pupils to go into the ocean alone ignoring warnings from the locals. This comes as the Kenya Maritime Authority acting Director Cosmas Cherop absolves the institution from any blame over the unfortunate. “If indeed the teachers ignored the advice of the locals as it is being reported then we are not to blame for anything, teachers must ensure safety of their students all the time” Cherop said. Cherop said they will now conduct safety campaign across the country and especially in schools who frequent the Coast for educational tour. President Uhuru Kenyatta condoled with families that lost loved ones during the incident and called on teachers and parents to be more responsible for children in their care. The President urged teachers to always accompany students in all places whenever they are on educational tour. “Let’s guide our children especially if it is the first time they are visiting a place” Kenyatta said.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga has defended himself against allegations by Deputy President William Ruto that he owes Mumias Sugar Company money, saying the claims are false. Odinga took a swipe at Ruto, instead accusing him of attempting to divert the attention of Kenyans from more pertinent issues. The CORD leader said Ruto should first disclose his role in the issuance of licenses to sugar importation companies during his tenure as Agriculture Minister during the Grand Coalition Government. “The Jubilee Government has this habit of… if one unearths corruption they say you are also corrupt. Two wrongs don’t not make a right; the high priest of corruption in Kenya should not divert our attention from other irrelevant issues – right now we are talking about the Uganda sugar deal,” Odinga said. He insisted the debt linked to him was guaranteed by a bank which paid it, adding that: “If there was a commercial debt, it is a commercial debt and there is nothing wrong with that. I want to say here without fear of contradiction that there is no debt owed.” A company associated with Mr Odinga has been previously accused of owing Mumias Sugar Company millions of shillings, but the former premier denies MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke any wrongdoing.

“There have been claims and accusations that I am among people who contributed towards the financial woes affecting Mumias Sugar Company. My molasses plant does not owe the sugar firm even a single cent,” Mr Odinga said at a funeral in Matungu last month. “Mumias supplied molasses to my company on a bank guarantee of Sh2 million. Where is the Sh300 million debt coming from?” He posed.

He said attempts to drag his name into the Mumias woes are diversionary tactics by Jubilee leaders. “The people who import cheap sugar into the country are known. They are the same people who ferried business partners, relatives and friends who are not government officials to sit in negotiations in Kampala to discuss sugar imports,” he claimed.

Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs, experts confirm Alcohol is the most dangerous one in the world, research has confirmed. Out of a list of controlled and illegal substances, scientists have discovered that alcohol poses the biggest threat to users and those around them. In fact, it is more harmful than cannabis, heroin, cocaine, tobacco and mushrooms. On average, those consuming alcohol have a 48 per cent chance of causing harm to others and a more than 70 per cent chance of causing harm to themselves. Recent surveys based on a 2010 study published in The Lancet have ranked alcohol as the most dangerous drug in parts of Europe, surpassing heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. In Africa, it is one of the leading causes of road accidents. Despite widespread fear concerning

the dangers of marijuana, users of cannabis have a less than 10 per cent chance of causing harm to others and a less than 20 per cent chance of causing harm to themselves. Prior to their conclusion, drug-harm experts ranked 20 drugs based on 16 measures which factored in the threat they pose to the user and the threat they pose to society in general. The threats were measured in regard to “damage to health, drug dependency, economic costs and crime.” Professor David Nutt, a former chief drugs adviser to the British government, together with a team of researchers, concluded that alcohol is the most harmful drug, scoring 72 out of a possible 100. This is more destructive than heroin or cocaine, which ranked less than 60 on the scale.

Women fund gets Sh6bn more While women produce 80 percent of food in Africa, they make up 60 percent of the hungry. Kenya’s ministry of Planning and Devolution has allocated an additional Sh 6 billion to the Women Enterprise Fund (WEF). The chalk up will elevate the Fund’s financing to Sh 11 billion from the government in total. This means Women Enterprise Fund will now receive sh11 billion from the government and will be offered in terms of loans targeting mainly the youth and other vulnerable groups across the country. Devolution Planning Permanent Secretary Peter Mangiti, spoke at the launch of the stakeholders’ strategic plan validation workshop in Nairobi quoting that the government was impressed with the positive effect the initial allocation of Sh5billion had done. “The loan will be accompanied with capacity building and incubation programmes for tangible and

sustainable goals aimed at benefiting and improving their lives because we are now looking at widening the demographics which will in turn improve the lives of many,” he said. Advisory board chairperson of Women Enterprise Fund Mumina Bonaya said the launch of the strategic plan is aimed at improving the current existing

structures in order to achieve more objectives of the fund. “The first strategic plan laid out a strong foundation and what we are hoping to achieve are products that will improve loan uptake throughout the country,” she said. A study revealed that women identified the loan sizes they received and lack of financial

management skills as some of the impediments to their businesses’ success. Government statistics indicate that about 48 per cent of micro and small enterprises in the country are owned by women, suggesting that they are well represented in the sphere, but the aforementioned challenges make it hard for their growth.

Casualties in Mali clashes Several people have been killed in clashes between Tuareg separatists and a pro-government militia in northern Mali. Military leaders from the main Tuareg rebel group are said to be among the dead. Both sides have accused the other of starting the fighting near the northern town of Kidal. The Malian government signed a peace deal with the Tuaregs in June, offering them partial autonomy.

Kiir snubs peace deal South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has failed to sign a peace deal in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, aimed at ending the civil war in his country. The government has initialed a draft agreement, but requested a further 15 days before signing in full. International sanctions had been threatened by mediators if both sides failed to reach an agreement on Monday. And the US has urged Kiir to sign a peace deal with rebels within the next two weeks to end 20 months of brutal civil war. “The United States deeply regrets that the government of South Sudan chose not to sign an agreement that was supported by all of the states in the IGAD plus the troika (the United States, United Kingdom and Norway), China, the African Union and the United Nations today,” said US State Department spokesman

John Kirby. “We call on the government to sign the agreement within the 15-day period it requested for consultations.” Tens of thousands have died and more than two million have been displaced since fighting broke out in 2013. Rebel leader Riek Machar, who did sign the deal, said he had expected more concessions from Mr Kiir, and

did not know beforehand that the South Sudanese president would fail to sign it. President Kiir’s team had “reservations” over the deal and wanted 15 days for “consultations” before returning to sign it, Seyoum Mesfin, mediator for the regional group IGAD, told the media. Mr Mesfin described it as “a great day in the forward

movement of the peace process in South Sudan”, despite noting that the signing of the deal was “not complete”. Tobias Ellwood, a British Foreign Office minister at the talks, said now was not the time to celebrate. The contents of the deal are not yet clear, but there was disagreement about power-sharing in a transitional government.

Murder suspects could be freed A prosecution-hitch has hit a case in which three women and a man are accused over the murder of a Canadian tourist in Nairobi. A trial court was yesterday told that the suspects – who have been in custody since April – could be released if what actually killed Mr Francis Fernard Pelletier is not established. Yesterday, a prosecutor sought and was allowed a further adjournment to wait for the final post-mortem report. The court was told that the autopsy report was “inconclusive” after a government chemist and the chief pathologist failed to concur of the possible cause of death. Mr Pelletier was allegedly injected with a lethal dose of heroin at a hotel in Hurligham where police secured CCTV captured the suspects who were in his

company before he died. The prosecutor asked for time for the DPP to file the report which will either open the doors to the suspect’s freedom or set the state for their trial for murder. In the case, Ms Najma Atieno Ogada who is facing a separate case of escape from police custody is held alongside, Japheth Ang’iyo Omwaka, Ms Caroline Waruguru Gichira and Ms Leila Mbete Mutoko. They are believed to have had jointly administered the lethal dose. Mr Angi’yo has since been charged with the murder while Ms Mbeta and Ms Waruguru and Ms Atieno are yet to plead. Justice Roslyn Korir of the Milimani law courts yesterday deferred the case to August 20 to allow the prosecution file the post-mortem report.

The court heard that samples were taken to the government chemist for analysis to determine the kind of poison that killed the Canadian. All the four suspects are facing a separate case before a court in Kibera where they are charged with being found in possession of a sachet of heroin worth Sh 450 and have each been granted bonds of Sh50, 000 pending hearing. They had been charged before the Kibera court with manslaughter, but the DPP reversed the case upon close perusal of the case file and substituted it with the murder charge pending at the Milimani law courts. Mr Pelletier died from the suspected lethal dose on the night of April 26 and 27 at a hotel in Kilimani area.

Alongside Mr Machar, the deal was also signed by Pagan Amum, a senior South Sudanese politician who is representing other significant political figures accused of involvement in the alleged coup. Mr Amum was recently reinstated as secretary general of the ruling SPLM. Several previous ceasefire agreements have failed to hold. South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, having gained independence from neighbouring Sudan four years ago. President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni and Ethiopian Prime Minister were also at the summit, as part of an international peace-building effort which includes the US, UK, EU, Norway, China, the African Union and the UN.

Kenyan faces murder charges in the us A Kenyan man is facing a murder charge in the United States after he caused an accident that killed a fellow motorist. According to the Houston Chronicle, thirty-six year old Martin Kingori also faces court action for having his four-year-old daughter in the front passenger seat of his vehicle at the time of Sunday’s accident, without a seat belt and not in a car seat. Kingori, suspected to have been drunk when he was driving, is charged with causing the death of a male motorist when he attempted to make a U-turn in the middle of the road at about 2am on Sunday. The victim is reported to have attempted to swerve to avoid impact, unsuccessfully. He suffered fatal injuries when his airbag failed to deploy. A breathalyser test taken at the scene revealed Kingori’s alcohol levels to be two-times the legal limit. Sergeant S. Wolverton of the Harris county traffic enforcement division said it was a “miracle” his daughter survived the accident as the impact was on the front passenger side of the vehicle where his daughter was sitting. Open Data initiative offers new portal with public information The 51.7 percent of the Kenyan population with access to internet services will now access public data easily after Open Data unveiled a new website in bid to improve efficiency. Making data publicly available reduces costs, makes government more efficient and inspires productive collaborations with the private sector Since its inception four years ago, the Kenya Open Data Portal (KODI) (www.opendata.go.ke) has changed its web portal to accommodate more data sets with visualization of information and timely and interactive feedback to data consumers. The initiative is a one-stop access shop for data from government ministries, agencies and counties. The portal constitutes government development, demographics, statistical and expenditure information available in a digital format for researchers, media,

policymakers, ICT developers and the general public. “We are starting to see the beginning of this as ICT developers, policy makers and development partners in civil society use the KODI data to create useful applications, policies and programs for the community.” Said KODI Project Coordinator Ms Linet Kwamboka. Kenya’s constitution under article 35, recognizes the right to public information. It states that ‘every citizen has the right of access to information held by the State; and information held by another person and required for the exercise or protection of any right or fundamental freedom’. “While we still face some resistance in data publishing by various government institutions we have put in place measures to mitigate this which is why we have devised the new strategies that will allow us to engage other government institutions better.” says Kwamboka.

Six months after arsonists set City Park market ablaze, traders and consumers are set to benefit as the refurbished Phase I of the market draws. The Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) commenced the reconstruction of the 12 block open shade area earlier this month. Phase II of the reconstruction includes 22 food courts, a drainage system, 2 toilet blocks and a number of individual stalls whose partition will begin in early September.

“This is a massive opportunity for Nairobi residents to run a decent business within the CBD,” said Anna Othoro, the County’s Trade Executive. “This will be the largest retail market in the country and will be able to accommodate more than 1,000 Traders. The traders will be registered using the eJijipay system. They will then be able to make payments directly to the county as a way of curbing fraud in the market sector,” she added The government’s current initiative aims to promote

tourism within the County since the City Park is one of the most popular picnic sites in Nairobi. The rehabilitation hopes to promote both local and international tourism. The local government is currently rehabilitating major markets in the county markets including Dandora, Umoja I, Muthurwa, Burma and Mowlem markets. Plans are also underway to construct ten more markets in the county in a bid to create employment opportunities for its residents.

Kenya receives Sh3.2bn healthcare loan from Japan TUESDAY, AUGUST 18, 2015

Japan had threatened to cut aiding Kenya following a row at the port of Mombasa when Treasury changed rules regarding the selection of an international company to operate the second container terminal. They loaned Kenya Sh3.28billion in a deal that will boost her healthcare sector when Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and Japan’s Ambassador to Kenya Tatsushi Terada signed the first of its kind loan agreement. “The credit will provide general budget support specifically to the health sector with a view to promote attainment of universal

healthcare in the country and will be achieved through expanding and strengthening essential health services at county hospitals in the country,” Rotich said. According to the Japanese government, the said loan is in line with its active promotion of the universal health coverage. “In this context, our support to achieve universal health coverage where all people, even those who were unable to enjoy satisfactory health care services due to financial reasons, enjoy the necessary services without suffering financial hardships,” Terada said. The loan will focus on for

major areas including free maternity services and health insurance subsidy programme that will see over 42,000 poor households enrolled to health insurance. The kitty will also support county health management teams for supervision, quality improvement and support activities at national and county levels through the sector service fund result-based which is also a beneficiary of the loan. Finally the remaining amount will go into capacity development for the universal health coverage related activities which will support other activities at both governments.

Royal Dutch Shell permit to drill the arctic rekindles BP’s 2010 oil spill The U.S. government granted the final permit to Royal Dutch Shell to begin drilling below the ocean floor for oil in the Arctic despite numerous protests from environmentalists and animal rights activists. The BBC reports that environmental campaigners are against the drilling, claiming it could harm the region and its indigenous wildlife. Concerns revolve around the oil spill that occurred in 2010 on the Gulf of Mexico by BP owned company, one of the world’s leading oil and gas companies. “We remain committed to operating in a safe, environmentally responsible

manner and look forward to evaluating what could potentially become a national energy resource base,” a spokesperson for Shell said during a recent announcement. Some have said, the drilling could prove disastrous and cause irreversible harm to the environment. The US government says it will also be monitoring Shell’s work around the clock to ensure the utmost safety. The company began work last month, but was allowed to drill only the top sections of two wells, off the coast of Alaska, the largest and most sparsely populated US state. The company has already committed about $7 billion

(Sh720 billion) to the contested project. Company officials are confident that the region has enormous amounts of oil. Experts believe that more than a quarter of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas resources can be found in the Arctic region. The BP oil spill is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry having not only contaminated the water but poisoned aquatic life in it as well. Shell, on the other hand, has promised to commit its resources in order to avoid such crises.

This will now be a song whose lyrics will no longer be relevant as the joint secretariat of Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP), Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) and Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) launched the KAMP-PRISK-MCSK Partnership in a bid to streamline the functions of the 3 Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) in Kenya in as far as royalties are concerned. The deal signed yesterday at a Nairobi hotel will now see the three organizations work hand in hand to better the welfare of artistes. ‘We have observed that the music industry has been in disharmony for a long time due to lack of unity and it is our desire that this should change,’ said MCSK Chairman Benard Mukaisi at the partnership launch. Just last week, artistes were on the streets of Nairobi protesting exploitation by CMOs as well as demanding a 60% play of local music. It is now believed that this unity will play a major role in bringing harmony and economic empowerment of the entire music industry membership, as has been experienced in developed

countries. The government of Kenya has in equal measure launched a national music policy that will give guidelines and see to it that artistes are cushioned against manipulation. The policy which is poised to streamline the music industry in Kenya, comes at a time when music stakeholders have been calling for an official document to guide the multi-million industry and prepare it for the next phase of growth. Uniting on a new paradigm shift, the partnership seeks to bring new leadership that will have positive impact on the lives of members. Each CMO has a distinct mandate and each entity is required to embrace good governance, transparency and good leadership to make them attractive. Bad politics and continuous wrangling has in the past caused great suffering to artistes and has at times been used as an excuse for some users not to pay or join the three CMOs. This is one major challenge that the partnership has vowed to do away with and ensure that every artiste registers with the CMOs and their interests taken care of. The economic value of music to the country is beginning to be better understood and promoted. Through music, Kenyan youths have been able to get engaged in gainful employment as well uniting all Kenyans for one course. With more than forty two different languages, music has proved to

be the only avenue of celebrating the diverse Kenyan culture as well as uniting the various industry stakeholders. Musicians, the CMOs reckon are influential and impact on the society’s and country’s agenda and thus, should be treated with dignity. By taking advantage of this union, this new unity is set to increase their benefits. Already, meetings are underway to discuss rights demarcation and tariff structures to see to it that the tariffs are aligned and their implementation made simpler. ‘We will continue to stand united and fight for the rights of musicians. We have already proven the heights that we are willing to go for the betterment of the music industry. As KAMP-PRISK-MCSK, we will be at the forefront of pursuing new revenue streams and will immediately embark on educating our members on the exploitation of digital rights to increase music sales, as well as content distribution through digital platforms,’ read a statement from the CMOs to the press. Players in the industry have lauded the partnership terming it as a step forward towards curbing the many hiccups that have bedeviled the industry. The CMOs reckon that this is a new beginning for all music industry players who will now have confidence when making forays into the industry knowing that their interests will be safeguarded.

osnian sculpture Jasenko Đorđević is an extraordinary artist. He uses an X-acto knife and tiny chisel to carve detailed pencil-tip sculptures. . The result resembles something made from stone or charred wood. Đorđević was first inspired to carve pencils after seeing the work of Dalton Ghetti. Đorđević’s material of choice is graphite or “black lead” which is hard and fragile at the same time. The smallest lack of attention to this material can lead to it cracking hence one has to be very careful when working with it.

Fun facts about the Oromo

The Oromo live in all the regions of Ethiopia except for Gondar. They make up about 25 million of the 55 million people in Ethiopia. Before colonization, skills like wood and metal works, weaving, pottery and tannery flourished. Pastoralism and agriculture were well developed. The Oromo people closely resemble the Somalis especially in appearance, language and culture. Other Cushitic speaking groups who are closely related to the oromos include Konso, Afar, Sidama, Kambata, Darassa, Agaw, Saho, and Baja. Oromiffa is a lingua franca in the whole of Ethiopia except for the northern part. It is a language spoken in common by several members of many nationalities like Harari, Anuak, Barta, Sidama, and Gurage, who are neighbors to Oromo. Other than their language, the oromos also speak Amharic which is the national language of Ethiopia and also English. The Oromo nation has a single common mother tongue and basic common culture. The Oromo language, afaan Oromoo or Oromiffa, belongs to the eastern Cushitic group of languages and is the most extensive of the forty or so Cushitic languages. The Oromo language is closely related to Konso (with more than fifty percent of the words in common), closely related to Somali, and distantly related to Afar and Saho.

Kyansimire Oroni

yansimire Oroni is not new to the world of art as he has always drawn and sketched from when he was a little boy. “From the time I was little, other kids would go into a supermarket and pick out toys while I on the other hand would always drag my mother to the isle with drawing books and colouring pens,” he says. Like a typical artist he quickly adds that the smell of a brand new drawing book or canvas is priceless. With his personality, Kyansimire was always impatient when it came to drawing and painting and as a result took to quick comics which is mostly using sketches to pass out a message. In the world of sketches and quick comics, the materials that he uses are mostly pen and paper which he calls his gun and holster. He doesn’t sell himself short as he says that when need arises, he can go big and do some painting on canvas too. On the question of how long it takes to complete a piece he decided to answer with a question “How long does it take you to finish a sandwich? Exactly” Being the drake of art that he is, Kyansimire gets his inspiration from everyday life “I can get pretty emotional on people when I draw. Especially if I’m sad or going through a tough time but yeah, basically I take in everything around me.” He

tells X Access. For this artist, just a smile from someone who has seen his work is everything. He thinks that all artists are unique in their own capacity as they are all weirdos! Kyansimire thinks that as much as there are people whose primary source of income is art, there are others who are still languishing in poverty in spite of their talent. “I think more than anything, we need the public to go back and fall in love with art. We need galleries. And I mean really cool galleries that you can take a girl out for a date and she wouldn’t feel like you are a cheapskate who can’t afford a real date. We need major exhibitions, we need art spaces that feel new and modern. We need Kenyan art right in the middle of pop culture. Commercialize it. Let it go viral. I need teenagers to be dropping Kenyan visual artists on their conversations. I need to hear Kenyan art being rhymed on popular music. That’s how we make legends and leave a legacy and eventually that’s how artists get to go Paris on vacations,” he says enthusiastically. Kyansimire loves handing out his art to his girlfriend and friends. On random days he even does random sketches which eventually comes out as a masterpiece. That is why he in undoubtedly the modern day sketch master.

Avril is saved? From what?

J

udith Nyambura aka Avril is on the receiving end after it emerged that she ‘received Christ’ this past weekend. Social media has been abuzz with both negative and positive criticism. Avril is reported to have shifted focus to gospel music and has promised to work with Christina Shusho in her debut single as a gospel artiste. ‘Avril is saved? Saved from what? South Africans?’ an irate fan asked on Facebook. Avril has however denied ditching the secular music scene.

Ne-yo in Kenya for Coke studio recording

NE-YO

American RnB singer Ne-yo has finally landed in Kenya. The singer landed at JKIA last night and was received by coke studio officials. Ne-yo is expected to record music with selected artistes Wangechi (Kenya), Ali Kiba (Tanzania), Dama Do Bling (Mozambique), Maurice Kirya (Uganda) and Ice Prince Zamani (Nigeria).

Sheila Mwanyigha is going back to her first love

Celebrated radio and TV host Sheila Mwanyigha will be back in the studio to record music, at least that is what she says on her social media page. ‘Music has helped me get over some of the hardest times in my life. Music helped me clear my first degree in university. Music landed me my first job in a radio station, where I was surrounded by music every day. ‘Music is calling me again. Scary, but exciting! If you have supported Nikki in any way over the years do let me know! What was your favorite song? And your favorite video?’ #Nikkisings.Huh, her first love is calling, sorry folks.

hildhood trauma Do you have an indepth knowledge r e g a r d i n g your partner’s experiences as a child? Sometimes people who fear commitment may do so subconsciously as a result of a troubled childhood. Perhaps they lost one parent as a result of divorce or death, and as they grew up, they developed tendencies to form superficial bonds with people so as to avoid getting extremely hurt in case they lose a loved one again. They may have also grown up in troubled homes witnessing constant marital fights between their parents and they therefore developed a negative mentality about love and commitment. Fear of losing identity Before getting into relationships, we are

accustomed to living on our own and by our rules. Relationships require deep compromises yet no one wants to lose their independence. The idea of having to report one’s every move to someone else is quite frightening and some people may avoid getting into a commitment for fear of losing oneself. The only remedy for this issue is for a couple to strive to reach the reconciliation stage in a relationship which entails achieving a balance between feeling both as one and also as different individual entities. Mixed feelings Being unsure of how deep their love for you runs could be another reason why your partner is not ready to commit to you. Before settling down, many people have a checklist that needs

to be fully ticked and you probably do not meet all their requirements. Alternatively, your partner could be the type that likes to keep their options open in case a better deal comes along, and they have settled for you in the meantime. Your partner could also still be in the process of pursuing their life goals such as getting highly educated or travelling the world, and they therefore keep delaying the life of full time commitment because in their opinion, the timing is not yet right. Esteem issues If you don’t make your partner feel that they are up to your standards, they will never be ready to settle down with you. Therefore, if you make it a point to remind your partner daily how lucky they are that you settled for them, the reason

why your partner is scared to commit to you has just been unraveled. Being treated as a disposable option makes one imagine worse situations in the future such as infidelity and domestic violence. Bad past relationship experiences If you are dating someone who has undergone a nasty break up or divorce in the past, fear of second time rejection and failure could be holding them back especially if they were not the initiators of the break up or divorce. With the pressure from the society to make the second chances at love work, the anxiety could overwhelm .This is worse for those who were previously in long-term relationships that ended with them losing their children to their estranged spouses and being burdened with alimony obligations.

ASK dr X Dear DR X,

My wife and I have been married for six years and all was well until the kids came along. We have three children and nowadays, my wife has no time for me. If she is not in the kitchen making meals she is outside doing the laundry or in the kid’s bedroom putting them to sleep. Apart from daily pleasantries such as “good morning” and “how was work”, we never really talk about anything. She always fulfils her motherly and wifely roles but I’m growing jealous of my kids. What should I do?

-Jeremy

I AM JEALOUS OF MY CHILDREN Dear Jeremy,

Send your agonising queries to adhyambo@x254.co

Have you ever stopped to consider the fact that your wife may be overwhelmed by all the things she has to do from dawn to dusk? Between taking the kids to school and washing up after them, how can she manage to have

a meaningful conversation with you? You need to step up and start assisting her in the easier chores instead of just sitting around at home so that she can in turn manage to squeeze you into her tight schedule. If the work is too much, consider employing a house help so that you can get quality time with your wife. Remember the children will soon grow up so you have no reason to worry. -DR X

MUSTREAD The Destruction of Black Civilization — by Chancellor Williams

The book’s main purpose is to serve as a reinterpretation of the African race history with the intention of setting off a quiet rebellion against white authors and the small percentage of Blacks who would suck up to them. The book is written in the enlightenment period where black intellects and scholars are starting to piece together the connection between what they have been taught regarding their history and the way they are perceived by others as well as the way they perceive themselves. They take it upon themselves to create a new body of historical knowledge and to create a new brand for themselves.

Some GSU officers are a pack of degenerate thugs General Service Unit officers have no chill! These officers have a habit of beating people unconscious and it has got to stop! I sincerely hope that the government stops recruiting ignorant illiterate and violent people into the GSU. We can’t live like this! Kenya is one of the few countries across the world where an unarmed suspect will never fight back. In fact, people are more likely to run than pick a fight with

an officer holding a gun. The GSU needs to vet its recruits and only pick rational, reasonable people from their stock of applicants. No one wants trigger-happy madmen running around with batons, beating people because they happened to be having a bad day. The GSU seriously needs a guidebook on how to handle suspected criminals and by-standing civilians. They must be held accountable for their actions. —Dennis L., Nairobi

Folly of African leaders clinging to power Power is invariably sweet. It confers dignity and self-respect. However, the rewards of power too, have their term. They harbor limitations that I would want to detail the folly of sticking to power by African Presidents as US President intimated at the AU meeting in Ethiopia. Like any other success, power is insatiable, a fact that escapes these leaders’ notice. They make power their chief ambition and consequently fail because lust cannot be wholly satisfied. Like a donkey’s driver who kept his beast moving by dangling before it carrot attached to stick, African leaders want to stay long in power hoping to find a satiation point at the expense of term and time-kronos and kairos. Another folly of clinging to power is that power and its achievements are ephemeral. They do not survive bodily death. You cannot take it with you, as we routinely say. We are creatures who envision eternity and must instinctively rue by contrast the brief purchase of time that power commands, and because of competitiveness and precariousness of power, who knows when it will change hands? —Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi

Turkish drug cheat Cakir stripped of London 2012 Gold Turkish 1500m specialist Asli Cakir Alptekin became the first athletes of the 28 staring at a possible ban by world Athletics governing body, IAAF. Alptekin London 2012 Olympic 1500m champion has been stripped of her Gold medal for doping. The Turkish athlete has also been banned for eight years, the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed. An appeal by world governing body the IAAF was upheld after the 29-year-old was cleared in Turkey. Straight after the race, Britain’s Lisa Dobriskey, who finished ninth, told BBC Radio 5 live: “I don’t believe I’m competing on a level playing field.” Alptekin served a two-year ban after a positive test as a junior in 2004. Her competitive results obtained since July 2010 have been disqualified after abnormal values were found in blood samples. The case comes amid a series of allegations of doping in athletics made by the Sunday Times and a German broadcaster. Last week the IAAF said it was suspending 28 athletes as a result of suspicious findings in doping tests.

‘Mashemeji Derby’ will be on Sunday, insists Rachier The much-awaited Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards derby will be held on Sunday and not Saturday as earlier reported by a section of the local press, insists Ambrose Rachier, Gor Mahia chairman. Rachier, this morning said that that the date and venue remains Sunday at Nyayo national stadium despite numerous reports on the local media including the official Kenyan Premier League (KPL) website that the date was moved forward from 23rd to 22nd August, which also indicates the venue of the match to be Kasarani stadium. “As far as we are concerned the derby is on Sunday at Nyayo stadium,” said Rachier adding that “There have been attempts to change the date but as this morning, what we know is that it is on Sunday and the venue remains Nyayo

Stadium.” According to insiders, Supersport, the league broadcast holders has expressed dissatisfaction by the change of dates of the Mashemaji Derby, the biggest local football match in the country. Nyayo is also understood to be booked for another function, drawing speculation whether the match will be moved to Kisumu-Moi Stadium, Gor’s other home ground now that Kasarani is hosting the African Games team currently preparing for Congo Brazzaville Games. Meanwhile Moses Irungu who replaced Tim Bryett as the Thika United head coach has appealed to his players to ‘play their roles’ to avoid further poor results that saw his predecessor forced to resign last weekend. Bryett ‘resigned’ from his

position citing poor playing surface at the team’s home ground, Thika Municipal Stadium. “The task ahead is not an easy one but I know if we all chip in and play our roles to our best we can overcome our setbacks,” said Irungu after he was confirmed as the head coach of the struggling Thika side. Irungu’s first assignment as head coach will be a home tie against taxmen Ushuru FC this Sunday. He has in the past deputised two coaches John Kamau who left the club early this season for Posta Rangers and Bryett. “Prior to the new changes Thika United have had a series of unsatisfactory results, prompting the management at the Club together with the former tactician to amicably resolve that the coach steps down,” said the club.

SUNDAY IT IS: Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier. He has said that the Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards derby will be held on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium and not Saturday as earlier reported.

Oscar Pistorius due to be released from prison after serving 10 months Oscar Pistorius according to multiple reports. Pistorius, the former Paralympic runner, was convicted of killing Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Pistorius, who said he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder, was found guilty of culpable homicide after a trial. According to CNN, the parole board often considers correctional supervision because South Africa’s prisons are overcrowded and underfunded. The board has the authority to place Pistorius on correctional supervision after serving one-sixth of his sentence because he was sentenced under a specific section of the Criminal Procedure Act. He’s expected to serve the rest of his sentence at the home of his uncle outside Pretoria. Pistorius served the 10-months at Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria, South Africa. Upon release, he will have to wear an electronic monitoring device.

MARCH TO FREEDOM: Osacr Pistorious being escorted out of a South African Court last year. He is set to be released from prison on Friday after serving just 10 months of a five-year sentence for the shooting death of his girlfriend.

Whether Pistorius will remain free is uncertain. Prosecutors pushing for a murder conviction against Pistorius filed papers Monday at South Africa’s Supreme

Court of Appeal, according to court registrar Paul Myburgh. A Supreme Court appeal hearing is set to take place in November. If the conviction is elevated, the runner will

be subject to at least 15 years imprisonment, according to the Library of Congress.

Chris Froome to release more performance data after tests Chris Froome has begun a series of physiological tests from which he will share data because he wants to prove people can “trust” his achievements. Froome last month vehemently denied allegations of doping as he won the Tour de France for the second time. Team Sky also took the unprecedented step of making data of the Briton’s performances available during the race. The 30-year-old said: “Plenty more testing and analysis to be done, I will be sharing results later in the year.” On Monday, Froome posted a video of him being tested at the GlaxoSmithKline Human Performance Lab in London. Froome also said he had been simulating conditions in Rio, the host city of next summer’s Olympic Games. Froome is preparing to lead Team Sky’s nine-man line-up in the Vuelta a Espana, which starts this Saturday. On Monday, Team Sky confirmed Froome’s place at the head of a team featuring Welshman Geraint Thomas and Ireland’s Nicolas Roche for the third and final Grand Tour of the season. Colombian Sergio Henao, Spain’s Mikel Nieve and Belarusian Vasil Kiryienka will also support Froome in Spain. “I’ve had a good rest after the Tour and now I’m ready for my next challenge,” said Froome, who is aiming to become the 10th rider to win two Grand Tours in a season. The three-week race, which finishes on 13 September in Madrid, begins with a 7.4km team time trial from Puerto Banus to Marbella in Spain.

Kiplagat confident to win VP seat ahead of IAAF polls tomorrow Isiah Kiplagat is confident he will capture of the Vice President post of the International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF) when the world athletics body conducts its election tomorrow in China. The elections will be held via a paper ballot following previous problems with the electronic system and Kiplagat, former Athletics Kenya President will lead the Kenyan list of candidates gearing for various post in the poll to be held during the congress to be held before the start of the world championship at Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing. David Okeyo will try to defend the post of chairmanship of the IAAF Cross Country Committee when he faces Saad Al-Hiyasat of Jordan and Carlos Cardoso of Portugal. Ibrahim Hussein heads of IAAF Regional Development Centre in Nairobi (Kasarani), AK Vice-President Women’s Affairs Fatuma Awale, Joseph Ochieng, Member of IAAF Race Walking Committee, are some of the Kenyans who will be going for various seats in the poll. Kiplagat who will also be defending his seat as a member of the IAAF Council he has held for over 15 years is expected to face stiff opposition from fellow African Cameroonian Kalkaba Malboum who refused to step down for him to increase Africa’s chances of getting one of the four vice presidency posts up for grabs. Britain’s Sebastian Coe will face Ukraine’s Sergey Bubka for the presidency post in an attempt to try and succeed Senegalese Lamaine Diack who’s held the past 16

years. Diack will not seek re-election. The electronic voting system has been abandoned following a number of highprofile failures. A re-vote was ordered last month at the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur in the battle between Beijing and Almaty to host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Problems with the “integrity” of the IOC’s new electronic voting system forced IOC President Thomas Bach to

order a switch to Plan B, after which the red hot Chinese favourites were declared the winners by 44 votes to 40. The IAAF’s last elections in Daegu four years were blighted by problems with the electronic voting system. The plan for Wednesday’s election at the China National Convention Center, which still has to be formally approved at the IAAF Council meeting tomorrow, is for there to be six polling booths and countries to be called up in batches of six.

BILBAO BEAT Barça TO WIN SPANISH CUP From Back Page

second half when their centre-back Gerard Piqué was shown a straight red card after he strode angrily over to the side of the pitch and shouted in the referee’s assistant’s face in protest at a decision. The incident seemed to give Barça renewed energy and Pedro and Ivan Rakitic immediately had chances to make it 2-0 before Suárez fired wildly over when through on the left. However, the Barça defence left a gaping hole at the back 16 minutes from time and Aritz Aduriz, who netted a hat-trick in the first leg, was able to score at the second attempt past Claudio Bravo prompting wild celebrations among the Bilbao fans inside the giant arena. Not even a late red card for the substitute Kike Sola could tarnish the Basque club’s joy as they ended Barça’s hopes of repeating their 2009 feat when they won all six competitions they contested: the Champions League, La Liga, the King’s Cup, the European Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

thletic Bilbao claimed their first silverware in three decades when they wrapped up a 5-1 aggregate win over 10-man Barcelona to win the Spanish Super Cup on Monday. Bilbao last secured a major trophy when they won Spain’s traditional season opener in 1984 and Friday’s 4-0 drubbing of the Spanish and European champions in the first leg at the San Mamés left Barça with too much to do at the Camp Nou. After waves of sustained pressure Lionel Messi gave the home side a 1-0 second-leg lead shortly before half-time when he chested down a clever Luis Suárez lay-off and clipped a close-range volley into the net.
