Parliament risk being dissolved should MPs fail to pass the Bills.

But with that feat clearly impossible to achieve, the legislators

have agreed to extend the deadline to shield them from being sent home.

But a crisis is brewing following their failure to agree on the duration of the extension. While those in the opposition are pushing for the deadline to be extended by not more than six months, their colleagues in the Jubilee coalition want it pushed

forward by a year.

On Wednesday, the House was forced to defer debate on the motion after Mr Muturi realised that the two-thirds majority required to approve the extension could not be raised.

City Hall threatens to stop construction of Hazina Towers The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has been given seven days to present an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on the construction of Hazina Towers, or face action from City Hall.

The Nairobi County Government also wants NSSF to clear a Sh143 million bill for closed public lanes around the project within seven days, or risk stoppage of the construction.

In a letter sent to the Chief Executive of NSSF, County Acting Secretary Gregory Mwakanongo says they are yet to receive a functional and implemented traffic management master plan indicating actions to be taken regarding impact on neighbouring properties.

The county has also directed NSSF to renew its building plans following the current Nairobi County Government regulations.

“Failure to comply will lead to measures by National City County Government to enforce compliance as laid down by law, which will include,

but not limited to stopping of the construction of the development,” the letter dated August 17, 2015 reads.

In November 2013, Governor Evans Kidero had warned that the Nairobi City County would not approve the construction of the proposed multi-billion shilling Hazina Towers until NSSF gets an updated EIA report from NEMA. Kidero had revealed that the last report was obtained in 2006 and as such there was need for an assessment to be redone.

He stressed that he would not give the go ahead until all the safety requirements are fully met. The plan involves the construction of a 31-storey office tower to add to the current eight floors, four basement levels, ground floor, two mezzanine and one podium that will result in a staggering 180-metre structure.

The building is located on Moktar Daddah road, in the Central Business District, and currently hosts Nakumatt Lifestyle.

MPs have yet again called for the disbandment of the senate as supremacy contests between the two houses of parliament continue.

Members of the National Assembly are angry about the step senators took to launch a probe into the financial woes facing the national carrier, Kenya Airways.

The senate committee on finance chaired by Kisumu senator Anyang’ Nyong’o has been probing top managers of the airliner together with acting Labour CS Rachel Omamo to unearth how KQ incurred losses of Sh26 billion.

But the MPs argue this is not within the mandate of the senators.

“The Senate “participates” in law-making, look at that word, “participates”, the choice of the word is very telling (about their mandate),” National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said as MPs took time to discuss the move by their colleagues in the senate.

“This country is over-represented; we need to reduce the levels of representation, because you can

see that is why we are fighting for work with the Senate. The work is not enough. All those roles of the Senate can be combined into a committee of the National Assembly,” Benjamin Langat who chairs the National Assembly’s Finance committee said.

But Prof Nyong’o dismissed the MPs saying the senate is just carrying out its constitutional oversight roles of state officers.

“We have a national carrier at stake…Sh60 billion at stake, 447 families are suffering out there since 2012. So it is a weighty matter. The Senate was seized of it much earlier and we cannot stop because somebody else thinks it’s now important,” he said.

He was backed by colleagues James Orengo (Siaya) and Billow Kerrow (Mandera) who both said the senate was properly seized of the matter as highlighted in the constitution.

“The senate plays on its own league and conducts itself in a manner that is substantially different from

them and we will continue our work undeterred by whatever noise that are coming from the Lower House,” Senator Kerrow said.

MPs are already threatening to move to court.

Mr Speaker you have ruled many times, yet it seems your rulings do not get through to the other House. We should not burden you…We must be sympathetic to these guys (senators) because they don’t have work; they are looking for work,” nominated MP Amina Abdalla said.

But the decision to move to court has already been castigated by Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr who opines that MPs will have jumped the gun by moving to court.

“If the National Assembly goes to court before taking the alternative dispute resolution contemplated in the article, they will have violated the Constitution and the person who authorised it,” he said.

He then directed that Majority Leader Aden Duale and Jakoyo Midiwo (minority chief whip) convene a House leadership meeting to build consensus on the matter and report back to him by Thursday afternoon.

But even then, the House still lacked the required numbers, forcing the speaker to issue the ban.

“Until this matter is resolved I have directed that there will be no approval of travel outside Kenya by any member between now and the time the House proceeds on recess which is on August 27,” he announced yesterday.

Parliamentary protocol requires that MPs get clearance from the Speaker before travelling abroad. And Muturi said his move will ensure MPs attend House sittings and participate in parliamentary debates on the nine bills currently before the House.

Mr Muturi said he will convene a Speaker’s Kamukunji on Tuesday next week to discuss the pressing issues.

“My office has received communication from the leadership of the House indicating that their meeting resolved that a Speaker’s Kamukunji (informal sitting of the House) be convened on August 25,

at 12 noon in the National Assembly Chamber to deliberate on the motion moved by the CIOC chairman seeking the approval of the House to extend by 12 months period in respect with constitutional timelines of August 27, 2015,” he said.

He was reffering to the meeting convened by Aden Duale and Jakoyo Midiwo to seek consensus on the way forward. The two reported that they will brief members during the Tuesday Kamukunji.

The Bills with the constitutional deadline of August 27, 2015 include

the Community Land Bill, Physical Planning Bill 2015, the Legal Aid Bill 2015, the Magistrates Courts Bill 2015, the Controller of Budget Bill 2015 and the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2015. Others are the Organisation and Administration of the Court of Appeal 2015, the Organisation and Administration of the High Court Bill 2015 and the Protection and Ownership of Indigenous Plants and Varieties Bill 2015.

Home invasions and carjacking are the most common crimes in Nairobi Criminals in all of Kenya’s major cities like to break into people’s homes, a report by the US-based Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) has revealed. One of OSAC’s latest surveys has found that the most common crime in Kenya’s major cities, is violent home invasions, followed by carjacking.

This is especially evident in Nairobi, where many of the criminal cases reported involve home invasions.

“In virtually every instance, criminals use weapons during commission of their crime,” reads the report.

It warns victims that attackers “will not hesitate to shoot a victim who is the least bit uncooperative or who may appear to hesitate before complying with their assailant.”

However, victims who are completely cooperative, may only be “robbed of their

possessions and released unharmed.”

Street crimes have also been cited as a cause for concern in nearly every major city, including Nairobi. Thought they may represent the most common incidences of criminal activity, they usually go unreported.

In which case, these crimes usually involve multiple armed assailants who either take advantage of solitary victims or use multiple cohorts to incite criminal activity.

Most of these attacks are crimes of opportunity where attackers look for potential victims who are least likely to defend themselves.

Other incidences involve pickpockets, who may not be able to due to fear or risk of facing mob justice. The OSAC report indicates that many of these attacks take place on city streets and in crowded areas or during traffic jams.

Reprieve for Pastor Ng’ang’a as he finally gets bail Televangelist James Ng’ang’a got a reprieve today after the court allowed that he be released from police custody on bail. The controversial preacher spent two nights in police cells after he was arrested on Wednesday in Nairobi. Limuru Resident Magistrate Timothy Ole Tanchu granted the pastor a Sh500, 000 cash bail or a surety of Sh1 million for his release.

His co-accused in the case Limuru Traffic Commander Patrick Baya, Inspector Christopher Nzioka and Simon Kuria were all released on a Sh50, 000 cash bail each with a surety of Sh100, 000.

He is accused of dangerous driving that led to the death of Mercy Njeri last month.

The three others are accused of various charges including conspiracy to evade justice by giving false information. All have denied the charges.

The DPP had opposed releasing the suspects on bond arguing that they can interfere with evidence. But the magistrate ruled that the reasons given by the state were not compelling enough to deny the bail. He said the preacher had cooperated with investigators and was not a flight risk.

As with the concerns on interfering with evidence, the court observed that the suspect was not likely to be a danger to any witness in the case saying that those who will testify had already given their statements to the police.

Meanwhile, thugs broke into

the pastor’s home last night and stole Sh500, 000 and valuables of unknown value.

While confirming the incident, Nairobi CID boss Nicholus Kamwende said the robbers broke the windows to bulldoze their way into the house.

The CID chief said Ng’ang’as wife reported the incident early in the morning and that investigations are underway.

Police are however reading mischief with some suggesting that it could be a ploy by the pastor to earn public sympathy after being slammed with murder charges.

The Neno Evalengical Ministries leader has been on a whirlpool of accusations and public condemnation following his alleged involvement in the road crash.

Officer shot dead, another wounded in Ngong Town A policeman was early today shot dead and his colleague seriously wounded in an attack by gunmen outside a bar in Ngong Town.

The corporal of police was in the company of four officers on patrol when they were attacked at about 3 am. Police say the one who was wounded is in a serious but stable condition. They were patrolling when they heard commotion from Destiny bar in the area where a robbery was apparently going on. And when they went to check, a gunman stormed out of the door with gunfire killing the officer on the spot. The gunman hit a second officer before he and his accomplices escaped on foot.

A major hunt is ongoing in the area although any arrest is yet to be made. The patrons who were in the bar ran away in the confusion.

Tanzania bans Middle East recruitment agencies

Tanzanian has banned up to 70 employment agencies that send women to countries in the Middle East to be housemaids.

It comes after complaints that women who travel from Tanzania to the Middle East for work are being mistreated. “Most of these girls and boys are subjected to commercial sex or work as domestic servants and barmaids, with some sent on forced labour in factories, farms and mines under very poor conditions,” Seperatus Fella, secretary of the government’s Anti-Trafficking Secretariat announced. She said some are forced to work in jobs they didn’t apply for, including the drugs industry.

Rape case MP Mwiti denounces his old ways, surrenders to God

Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti who faces charges of rape in a Nairobi court has turned to God, declaring that he has “seen the light” on the biblical road to Damascus.

Mwiti says he has decided to dedicate his life to preaching the gospel and will henceforth be a fisher of men after a life of inequity.

Using the miracle of Lazarus to explain his transformation during an interview that turned into a sermon at a Nairobi hotel, Mwiti emphasised that seeing the light after years in ‘blindness’ was not inspired by the potentially damaging charges he’s facing but by the need to inspire and change lives.

“I want to be a church person, I am already changed and I am looking at being a preacher in due course so that I can give people the experience of this life in two worlds. I am going to teach people from known to unknown,” he declared.

“Jesus has raised me from the dead. He did not care about how many days Lazarus had spent in the grave or how much his body stunk but he used him for his glory,” the

born again legislator added.

And to show he has crossed over to God, the MP declared he had sold his liquor businesses as he looks to walking in the straight and narrow path where only a few tread according to the teachings of his new found faith.

“I am not depending on how people knew me earlier on.

I want them to watch this space to see the Mwiti who is favoured by God, who will carry the favour and grace to other people,” he asserted.

“There is no way you can carry a key to the bar and a key to the church. If you put them in one pocket, they will clash and the clashing you will see is pastors are caught up drinking at night when they are supposed to mentoring people,” he explained further.

So changed is the MP that he wants the war against illicit and second generation alcohol to be enhanced proposing that even drinks classified as first generation should be strictly regulated since they were being abused.

Police name al-Shabaab recruiterS Police have named three men believed to be behind the recruitments of Kenyan youths to Somali terror groups, alShabaab.

The three who operated in Kenya, have now shifted their base to Somalia, a police report says.

One of them is believed to have helped plan the 2013 Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Mall attack in which at least 67 people were killed, while the other two are clerics.

The report accused the trio of using the internet to lure the youths including college and university students with cash promises.

According to the report, the recruiters have also resorted to media advertisement of college opportunities in the Middle East to lure unsuspecting youths The police report, “Tracing the disappearing Kenyan youth”, named the three key recruiters as Abdifatah Abubakar Ahmed, Ramadhan Hamisi Kufungwa and

Ahmed Iman Ali. Abubakar is said to be an alShabaab commander and is accused of planning the Westgate Mall attack and currently co-ordinates recruitment of youths in the Coast region to join the militant group.

Police said young women are among his targeted recruits.

The women are mainly recruited as wives for fighters in Somalia. He had a fraudulent Kenyan ID and was deported to Somalia in 2008.

Kufungwa is said to have been an imam at Musa Mosque in Mombasa. He is said to be responsible for the facilitation of the movement of recruits to Somalia.

According to the report, Ali studied engineering at the University of Nairobi, preached at a mosque in Nairobi’s Majengo estate and appears in al-Shabaab propaganda videos. He went to Somalia in 2009.

NO DEAL WAS SIGNED BETWEEN KENYA AND UGANDA

Journalist shot dead in Juba after threat to kill reporters South Sudan journalist Peter Moi was on Wednesday shot dead by unknown gunmen in the capital, Juba, his family said.

Mr Moi becomes the seventh journalist to be killed this year in South Sudan, where a civil war is ongoing.

His killing comes days after President Salva Kiir threatened to kill reporters “working against the country”.

A presidential spokesman Ateny Wek, however, said the President’s remarks were taken out of context adding that police are investigating Mr Moi’s killing.

He said a statement would be issued to clarify President Kiir’s remarks, made at the airport in Juba before he went to Ethiopia for peace talks to end the civil war.

Mr Moi worked for South Sudan’s Corporate Weekly newspaper and was killed at about 8pm local time

on Wednesday night by unidentified gunmen on the outskirts of Juba.

Juba-based journalist Jason Patinkin told the BBC’s Focus on Africa radio that the killing of Mr Moi was a worrying development for the media in South Sudan, which has seen a steady decline in press freedom since the outbreak of the civil war in December 2013.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), security agents shut down two privately owned newspapers earlier this month as well as a media group that produced a popular radio series.

The media freedom lobby group has also been critical of Mr Kiir’s comments, which local journalists believe were connected to media criticism of the protracted peace negotiations.

“The leader of any country threatening to kill journalists

is extremely dangerous and utterly unacceptable,” the CPJ’s Tom Rhodes said in a statement.

Mr Kiir has also been under fire from diplomats for failing to sign a peace deal on Monday.

The US State department has said he has now promised to sign after “a couple more days of consultation”.

But the US has submitted draft proposals for a UN arms embargo on South Sudan.

Nearly two million people have been left homeless since conflict broke out in the world’s youngest State in 2013.

Fighting erupted after Mr Kiir accused rebel leader Riek Machar, his former deputy, of plotting a coup against him.

Mr Machar signed the accord in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, on Monday - the deadline set by mediators.

Greek PM quits, calls for early elections Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced he is resigning and has called an early election.

Mr Tsipras, who was only elected in January, said he had a moral duty to go to the polls the country secured a third bailout with European creditors.

The election date is yet to be set but earlier reports suggested September 20.

Mr Tsipras who will lead his leftist Syriza party into the polls has faced an internal rebellion by some members angry at the bailout’s austerity measures.

He had to agree to painful State sector cuts, including far-reaching pension reforms, in exchange for the bailout - and keeping Greece

in the Eurozone.

The PM made the announcement in a televised state address today.

“The political mandate of the January 25 elections has exhausted its limits and now Greeks have to have their say. I want to be honest with you. We did not achieve the agreement we expected before the January elections.”

Mr Tsipras said he would seek the Greek people’s approval to continue his government’s programme. He said Greeks would have to decide whether he had represented them courageously with the creditors.

The PM met President Prokopis Pavlopoulos later in the evening to submit his resignation.

Earlier this month, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta paid a threeday State Visit to Uganda at the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni.

During the visit, Kenya and Uganda discussed many issues of mutual interest, at bilateral, regional and international levels.

A communiqué was immediately issued to all media houses that summarized all the issues that were discussed. We note with concern that some misleading reports, however, have emerged, purporting to be information on the bilateral discussions, alleging that Presidents Kenyatta and Museveni had signed an agreement on behalf of their governments to allow importation of sugar from Uganda.

The Government wishes to clearly state that No trade agreement or any other deal was signed between Kenya and Uganda governments.

Trade between Kenya and Uganda Uganda has consistently remained Kenya’s largest trading partner. Trade between Kenya and Uganda is in various sectors that include banking, insurance, marketing, ICT and commodities. Last year, the trade volume stood at over US$700m in favour of Kenya against Uganda’s US$180m.

The Uganda State visit accorded both countries the opportunity to discuss trade and matters of a bilateral nature, a record of which is contained in the Official Communiqué circulated.

Kenya Sugar Situation Kenya’s sugar production has not been sufficient to cover domestic consumption, resulting in an annual deficit of between 200,000 and 250,000 metric tonnes. In order to bridge the deficit, imports are first sourced from EAC partner states. The balance of the sugar imports are then sourced from COMESA member countries before exploring other international markets.

Over the last five years, Kenya has been importing on average 200,000 tonnes of sugar to bridge the deficit in the domestic market.

Uganda has been selling sugar to Kenya since 1997. Under the Customs Union of the East African Community, sugar from Uganda enjoys full access into the Kenyan market. Additionally, being a member of COMESA, Uganda is entitled to access the Kenyan market on COMESA Treaty terms. Sugar imports statistics between January and July 2015 show that the largest quantities of sugar came from Zambia, while other imports come from Malawi, Swaziland and Madagascar among other COMESA member states.

The deficit in sugar production motivated the Government to apply for a safeguard under the COMESA Treaty to protect farmers against uncontrolled sugar imports.

It is against this background that sugar imports from COMESA countries have been allowed into the country to supplement the deficit and stabilize market prices. It should be noted that the Government and industry stakeholders take into account the local production and market situation before the quantities for importation are decided upon, and consequently authorised.

The Government acknowledges that there are a number of challenges facing the sector such as high cost of production, debts and obsolete technology. There are ongoing efforts by the Government and the industry stakeholders to address them.

The Government recognizes that the sugar sector as an important strategic sector for our country and would like to assure millers, farmers and the public in general that all efforts are being made to streamline the sugar industry.

ITS A RUMOURS: The government has denied signing a sugar importation deal with Uganda, reiterating they are setting up to revive Mumias Sugar Company.

Acting Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed has assured that no trade treaty was signed during Mr Kenyatta’s visit to Uganda earlier this month.

“We note with concern that some misleading reports have emerged purporting to be information on the bilateral discussions, alleging that President Kenyatta and President Museveni had signed an agreement on behalf of their governments to allow importation of sugar from Uganda,” said Mohammed.

Mr Mohammed ascertained that during the visit, the two governments discussed issues trade

unlike the opposition claims that the two heads of state signed a deal warranting sugar importation.

He further assured millers, farmers and the region that the Jubilee government is setting up strategies that will revive Mumias Sugar Company which has suffered massive financial loss.

“The government recognises that the sugar sector as an important strategic sector for our country and would like to assure millers, farmers and the public in general that all efforts are being made to streamline the sugar industry,” he said. According to him, Kenya’s sugar deficit problem calls for the

country to import the product from East Africa Community partners and COMESA member countries before exploring other international countries.

He noted that the government was safeguarding farmers against uncontrolled sugar imports stating that it had applied for a safeguard under the COMESA Treaty.

“It should be noted that the government and industry stakeholders take into account the local production and market situation before the quantities for importation are decided upon and consequently authorized,” concluded the CS.

It Is quIte unfortunate that most of my musIc Is hardly played on Kenyan radIo statIons and tVs.

Kenyan artiste Makadem aka Mganga Mkuu is a specialist in contemporary music, at times he is described as a ‘Benga’ music maestro.

His style fuses modern urban music to African culture and a lace of traditional instruments is arguably the most distinctive sound from Kenya. But just like the Biblical gospel of St. Mathew, Makadem has often been celebrated abroad and shunned at home, his music is widely played on radio and TV abroad but not here. The artiste has recently made headlines championing for #PlayKE music#PlayMakadem and he has no apologies.

ho is Makadem?

I am a Kenyan international performing artiste, songwriter, music composer and vocalist. At times referred to as ‘Ohanglaman’ How would you describe your sound?

My sound is contemporary African, contemporary in the sense that it cuts cross classical music belonging to the period that started in the mid1970s to early 1990s, which includes modernist, postmodern, neoromantic, and pluralist music.

What makes you different from other artistes in your genre?

I believe in consistency, that is what makes me different. When you take a path, follow the path and never let go until you have achieved your vision and mission. Hard work is also key, it makes one stand out no matter how long it takes, eventually you do.

Tell us about your musical journey and why the name ‘Ohanglaman’?

I began as a dancehall artiste in the 90s but afterwards transformed my style into a fusion of benga and ohangla.

Over the years, I have composed and recorded Afrofusions and contemporary

African music. I believe though that I can hack any other genres if put to task.

‘Ohanglaman’ is the title of my debut CD, it was this descriptive name most people used to introduce me thus it stuck and I ended up being ‘Ohanglaman Makadem’.

What is your latest project?

I am currently promoting my album dubbed ‘Koko rio’ and working on taking on my international shows set for October this year.

Why haven’t we heard your music on radio or your music videos on TV? It is quite unfortunate that most of my music is hardly played on Kenyan radio stations and TVs. This has been the case for a long time with most radio presenters shelving my music whenever I distribute them to the various radio and TV stations. Their reason has been that my music is not good enough. I wonder why they say so because my music is appreciated internationally and has a great audience abroad. I believe my music is way better than most of the music played on local radio and TV stations.

What is your take on the recent launch of the national music policy?

What does it mean for the industry?

It is an initiative that should have been in place a long time ago. The music industry has been run by cartels for a very long time. If the national music policy is implemented, the artistes will reap from the music industry. For a long time, music has been associated with poverty because of such loopholes.

Making art professional, building the music industry and bringing competition back to life are some of the benefits we hope to get from the national music policy, once implemented.

Do you believe the recent protests by artistes will bring change to the industry?

We made an effort and it looks like it already is bearing fruits.

The CMOs are now working together and soon with the implementation of the national music policy, artistes will get their fair share of airplay and get paid in royalties.

What is your take on Kenyan DJs, radio and TV hosts who do not play local music?

It is just plain sad that the very people who are supposed to promote Kenyan music are the ones killing it by forming

cartels and locking out good music.

Mostly, music played locally is picked

by DJs who play whatever music they like. This in turn has blocked other artistes who never get airplay. In some cases, the DJs and radio hosts are bribed to play one track over and over again which should not be the case.

What do you recommend to curb this vice?

It is clear that in this country things take too long to be done right. The implementation of the National Music Policy under the watchdog of the CMOs will ensure this discrimination is thrown out through the windows. We hope for an industry where all artistes will get fair airplay.

Artistes too need to unite and speak in one voice, there are some artistes who think they are bigger and better and are not bothered with the sufferings of the rest. They must stop being selfish and work together to prosper the music industry.

Word of advice to new artistes in the music industry?

Believe in yourselves, believe in what you do. It’s never easy but if you put your mind to it you will go places.

Housing Finance rebrands as mortgage uptake increases Housing Finance has rebranded to HF Group limited to reflect its growing base of financial services.

The property firm and financial service provider had earlier this month announced the establishment of a non-operating holding company, HF Group Limited, following approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

The move will result to the transfer of the mortgage finance business of the Company to a new subsidiary, HFC Limited, the firm said in a previouslyreleased statement.

Kenya’s property market has seen an increase in the uptake of home loans among consumers, while a month ago the industry reported an upsurge that resulted in the uptake of 2,000 new mortgages, a feat

that was experienced at the end of 2014. HFC Limited is licensed to carry on the business of mortgage finance as well as banking services under the Banking Act. Following this approval, the board has appointed Mr. Frank Ireri as the Group Managing Director, with responsibility to oversee the HF Group subsidiaries.

“The rebranding exercise will be phased over the next few months and will create a strong brand identity for the group and its subsidiaries,” said Mr. Steve Mainda, HFC Board Chairman, “The new capability will allow the group to offer banking, financial, property and investment solutions across the value chain. We are no longer a mortgage company. HF Group presents a financial and property powerhouse.” He said.

Company pays Sh103 billion to make “female viagra” cheaper Valeant Pharmaceuticals, a Canada-based international company, has entered a $1 billion (Sh103 billion) deal with the maker of a libidoenhancing drug for women in a bid to make the medicine more accessible and affordable to consumers. Under the agreement, Valeant will acquire Sprout Pharmaceuticals, the company that created a drug called Addyi, which has been dubbed the “female Viagra”, the BBC reports. The announcement comes just one day after Sprouts drug received regulatory approval from the U S Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The drug is designed to help women regain their sex drive by boosting levels of chemicals in the brain. The deal is still pending approval but Valeant said it should go through by the end of September.

“This partnership allows us the capacity to now ensure broader, more affordable access to all the women who have been waiting for this treatment,” said Sprout’s Chief Executive Cindy Whitehead.

Kenya steps up to UN year of soils Kenya has joined other countries globally to mark 2015 as the United Nations International Year of Soils.

According to the UN, soils have been greatly affected by degradation and nutrient mining which have not only taken a toll on yields but hindered its significance in building resilience in flood control.

Geographical data shows that Western Kenya has been severely affected in degraded farms and sick soil since a hectare could produce up to 6 tonnes of food crops but due to degradation the same hectare produces 0.5.

According to Food and Agricultural Organization

(FAO) over application of chemicals has led to poor and tired soils in Sub Saharan Africa while overexploitation of soil nutrients without replacement has been seen as key to halving crop yields.

The country through Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KARLO) have created awareness across smallholder farmers on timely assessment of their soil to encourage timely interventions.

Human activities like over cultivation and mining of nutrients in the top soil further were blamed for dwindling potency of the soils.

Through an innovative project dubbed Integrated Soil

Fertility Management (ISFM) in association with scientists from Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), farmers are applying lime to their farms to boost fertility and reduce acidity.

A research dubbed ‘improving smallholder Maize production in western Kenya revealed that maize yields by individual farmers has increased by 220 per cent.

The same programme advocated adoption of intercropping soils with legume due to its consideration as the fastest way to regenerate nutrients into the soils through nitrogen fixation.

Rally driver Duncan’s Ford Capari cleared for EA Classic Safari Rally

Legendary driver Ian Duncan’s Ford Capri has finally been cleared to take part in the 2015 Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally after months of speculations.

Geoff Doe, the Chief Technical Delegate for the marathon rally gave his assurance after checking Duncan’s car soon after its arrival from UK on Tuesday evening.

“His Capri has now been approved by the EA Safari Classic technical team subject to a few minor changes and arrivals of a V6 engine that is on order,” officials said.

“I have inspected the car which looks fine though there are few changes that need to be carried out. The affected parts are not as serious as it had been suggested prior to my visit to Kenya. Duncan is fully aware and happy with the latest findings,’’ said Doe. Meanwhile, preparations for Safari Classic are at an advanced stage as drivers use national rallies to test their machines for forthcoming marathon raid event.

Alastair Cavenagh and Tejvir Rai were recently in Arusha Rally to test their respective Porsches for the nineday event, which zooms off from Mombasa before crossing over to the Tanzanian when the programme begins on 19 November.

“My car has completely been stripped down to make sure all the necessary repair works and modifications are carried out by my chief mechanic. Arusha Rally was the right place to test it as we were running short of time with no immediate rally in Kenya,’’ said Cavenagh, the former national champion.

While Cavenagh opted to miss the Machakos Rally, Rai made sure he followed his testing programme in Arusha with the latest round of the KNRC in Machakos.

Cavenagh may take part in the KCB Nakuru Rally in the Proton as his Porsche gets ready for a shakedown in Mombasa early November in time for the KQ-sponsored rally. Carl Tundo, who has dominated the KNRC battle for a long period, will change his focus in November to concentrate on the Classic Rally, where he will be part of the two-car-team that will include his dad, Frank Tundo at the wheels of the spectacular TriumphTR7 V8 machines.

Kenya women’s softball team trip to Botswana has been called off. The team is currently preparing for the June 2016 World Softball Championships in Surrey, Canada but their build up against Botswana has been postponed due to financial constraints. The squad was also forced to break their training camp after until the third week of September to begin preparations for their return match against Uganda

at home.

“We are not able to send the team to Botswana due to the scarcity of finances to cater for all the logistical expenses for the squad during the outing,” said Francis Karugu Kenya Softball Federation’s secretary general.

Butt, Asif eligible for September return Former Pakistan Test cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif will be free to return to competitive cricket on 1 September, the International Cricket Council has confirmed.

The duo were banned for five years in 2011 for corruption but those backdated sanctions are due to expire. Bowler Mohammad Amir, who was banned at the same time, returned to Pakistani domestic cricket earlier this year. All three

will be eligible to play international cricket from next month.

Amir, 23, fellow bowler Asif, 32, and captain Butt, 30, were convicted over ‘spot-fixing’ offences in a Test match against England at Lord’s in August 2010.

They were found to have deliberately bowled no-balls as part of a betting scam initially uncovered by an undercover investigation by the now-defunct News of the World.

Amir, 19 at the time, was banned

for five years, Amir for seven years with two suspended, and Butt, described as the ringleader, for 10 years with five suspended.

In addition to these sanctions, all three players were jailed: Butt for 30 months, Asif for one year and Amir for six months.

In January, Amir was granted permission by the ICC to return to domestic cricket eight months prior to serving his full five-year ban.

He has since played four matches

for Rawalpindi Rams in Pakistan’s national Twenty20 tournament.

In May, he said he was aiming to play for Pakistan in next year’s World T20 in India.

Butt told ITV News in April that he also harboured ambitions of playing international cricket again.

The trio would theoretically be eligible to face England in their series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in October and November.

Can Wanyama force a move to Spurs?

Victor Wanyama is a name that has been in the lips of many Kenyan football lovers every transfer season since he made his name with Scottish side Celtic.

Wanyama who joined English side Southampton in the 2013/2014 season has been linked with a number of top clubs. Last season talks of him moving to Emirates were all over, but nothing good came of it That debate was elicited last June when Wanyama, confessed on a local TV show that he would like to move to Arsenal before retracting his earlier statement.

Now Tottenham is understood to have made an enquiry about his services though his current employers, Southampton, are reluctant to sell him to the North London

club.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to buy a defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes. Pochettino has worked successfully with Wanyama, 24, during his time at Southampton.

Wanyama has two years left on his contract at St Mary’s and is thought to be keen to link up again with Pochettino.

Yet having seen other key figures leave for White Hart Lane in recent times, Southampton will fight as hard as they can to ensure Wanyama does not join the player exodus.

Wanyama’s former midfield partner, Morgan Schneiderlin was wanted by Spurs last summer and keen to move but Southampton stood firm. The Frenchman joined Manchester United a year later for £24 million and it is thought Saints will demand a similar price for Wanyama. Whether the Kenyan Captain who is expected to guide Harambee Stars in Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Zambia next month and whether he will push for a move away to London this time round still remains unknown.

FC Leopards will be going all out for their first win in three matches when they face bitter rivals Gor Mahia this Sunday in a ‘Mashemeji’ Derby at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The two teams are going into the weekend’s clash on the backdrop of confusion on the venue. Kenya Premier League (KPL) pushed the match backward to Saturday before reverting Sunday as had been initiallly scheduled.

That confirmation came late on Wednesday when Sunday was confirmed as the date and Nyayo Stadium as the venue.
