ormer Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Gladys Shollei has today been charged with irregular purchase of a house for the Chief Justice. Mrs Shollei who appeared before Principal magistrate Felix Kombo at the Milimani Law Courts, denied the charge and was released on a Sh600, 000 cash bail and an alternative bond of Sh1.5 million. She is among seven former judiciary
officials implicated in the purchase of the residential property valued at Sh310 million. Six others; Francis Kissinger, Martin Okwata, Benedict Omollo, Thomas Atak, Nicholas Mbeba and Wycliffe Wanga faced similar charges on August 5. Like Mrs Shollei, they were released on a Sh600,000 cash bail. The accused will all return to court on September 7, 2015 for mentioning of the case and
setting of a hearing date. The prosecution said that between October 5, 2012 and June 3, 2013 at the Supreme Court Nairobi, being members of the tender committee, they jointly engaged in purchasing fully furnished residential property for the Chief Justice at 310 million shillings without prior planning. Embrace new technology in treating patients, medics told
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta speaks at the third conference of the International Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy at carnivore restaurant last night. She urged medics to embrace new technology in treating patients.
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has urged medics to embrace emerging advanced surgical technologies that involve smaller amounts of anesthesia and retain patients for shorter periods. She said medical procedures that make less intrusion into the human body – especially in gynaecology – such as minimal access surgery have the advantages of shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and early return to work. “The overall acceptance of laparoscopic surgery the world over is testament to its greater advantages and should be encouraged at all levels in our country,” said the First Lady. The First Lady spoke last night during the third African Conference of the International Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ISGE) and Society’s Annual Scientific Conference at Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi. She asked both practising surgeons and
medical students in gynaecology and general surgery to keep themselves abreast to the new medical procedures and skills in laparoscopic surgery. “Surgeons need be adequately trained in the traditional open techniques during their undergraduate and postgraduate programs so as to create an enthusiasm and competence in minimal access surgical procedures as a specialty,” she added. She lauded the society for performing 12,000 specialized surgeries in public hospitals, targeting the underprivileged Kenyans who cannot afford the services privately. The First Lady appreciated the efforts and activities of the society, saying they resonated well with the mission and ultimate goal of the Beyond Zero campaign, “saving the lives of our mothers and children and improving their health”. She pledged to work closely with
the society to the advantage of not only the beneficiaries of the surgical procedures, but also medical students and other parties interested in undertaking critical research in these areas. International Society of Gynecology Endoscopic President, Prof. Bruno Van Herendael, said the annual scientific meeting provide an international forum for the exchange of new ideas between gynecologic endoscopists and evaluation of new endoscopic techniques that are of benefit to women. Prof. Herendael said the society accredits surgeons with the necessary theoretical and practical means judged to be sufficient for an efficacious and safe performance of operation for quality service to the patient. The conference, the largest to be held in Africa, brought together 97 leading endoscopists and delegates from 31 countries.
Police holding Shollei denies irregular two terror purchase of CJ’s house suspects From Page 1
Police are holding two terror suspects who were arrested during an ongoing operation in Garissa. Security personnel have also recovered several firearms and explosives in Garissa during a twoday operation by interior ministry and the Kenya Defence Forces over the weekend. Two terror suspects were in possession of the weapons. The two suspects arrested in Garissa are said to have links with Mohamed Kuno, the man believed to have planned April’s attack at the Garissa University College in which 148 people were killed. A statement from the interior ministry also says the plot to attack Kenyans was hatched from Somalia but facilitators were within. The ministry further states that the operation was aimed to nail and arrest the accomplices. “The operation is to tame an Ignacio terrorist plan. Security agencies have recovered a cache of firearms and explosives,” the
statement said. This comes even as police in Mombasa claim that al-Shabaab militants are changing their recruitment strategy and are now targeting Secondary Schools students Coastal Regional Police Commander Robert Kitur warned over the weekend that the terrorists have now shifted gears and are now radicalising students in secondary schools. “Radicalisation is not only happening in mosques but have now established they have shifted their focus to secondary schools,” he said. He said police in the area are now working towards ensuring that there is no radicalization is schools after the militants shifted their focus from the mosques to other learning institutions. “Security personnel have expanded their attention to learning institutions to ensure students are not radicalized. We have reports; we want to ensure our students are not radicalized,” he added.
Their prosecution was approved by the Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko on July 31. Mr Tobiko said he was satisfied that the evidence gathered by Ethics and AntiCorruption Commission was enough to sustain the charges. Mrs Shollei is accused of using her
powers to wrongly award a contract to purchase the house in contravention of the applicable procurement and financial procedures. The prosecutor argued that Shollei failed to ensure, “the purchase of the Residence of the Chief Justice was done in a manner that was effective, economical and transparent.” Appearing before the National

Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee in June 2014, an interdicted Kissinger admitted that there were irregularities in the purchase of the residence. He said the committee did not wait for a conclusive valuation to be carried out on the residence before awarding the tender to Johnson Nduya Muthama Holdings Limited, a company owned by Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama. He told the oversight committee that the tender team went ahead to award the tender in spite of a vague valuer’s assessment of the exact acreage of the property among other details. Kissinger blamed the shortcomings of the tender committee on the fast pace of transformation in the Judiciary and a heavy reliance on consultants. Shollei’s successor Atieno Amadi told the committee on June 10, 2014 that despite the Judiciary having paid for the residence in full, it was not in possession of the ownership documents. Shollei had moved to the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in April after it emerged that she was among present and former public officials under investigation by the EACC. Her application was however denied as the court termed it premature. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Kenyan police officers don’t prevent crime, they wait for it to happen, says Bureau report Kenyan police officers don’t prevent crime. Instead, they wait until it happens before they can act, says a report from the US-based Bureau of Diplomatic Security. While many security-based organisations across the world are tasked with deterring criminal activities as well as capturing the criminals themselves, Kenyan forces tend to only focus on the latter. “The Kenyan Police Service is almost solely a reactive force and demonstrates moderate proactive law enforcement techniques or initiative to deter or investigate crime,” says a statement from the US Department of State. One of their recent studies has found that local police often lack the resources, training, and person-

Other studies have shown that members of the public will not bother to call the police when they are in danger and often choose to rely on the kindness of strangers or their neighbours for assistance. In fact, the original report claims that the chances of the police responding to an incident depend on availability of personnel and the fuel required to power their vehicles. The Bureau also says that local police have “a poor record of investigating and solving serious crimes.” While the statements seem a bit harsh, spot-checks have revealed that many Kenyans seem to agree.
Hard-working governors to be feted in October Governors who have had exemplary performance in the last two and half years are set to be feted in October following the launch of governors’ awards today morning. The award seeks to identify governors who have transformed the lives of people in their counties but have had little coverage from the media. Speaking during the launch of the award today morning at Serena Hotel, Pete Ondeng’ Founder of Lead Africa Foundation said the award is neither a popularity contest of the county chiefs nor a political activity. “The main purpose of this award is to reward excellence and the winners will be picked purely on merit by professionals drawn from various sectors,” he said. Ondeng’ who is also the chairman of the award board said the country has had a culture of criticism towards governors and this time they seek to change the perception that all is bad in the counties. “We have to come to point whereby we look at what is working at

Senagal jails seven men for ‘being gay’ Seven men have been jailed for six months in Senegal, after they were found guilty of homosexuality. A court in Dakar heard police caught the men having sex during a raid. The mother of one of the accused told the authorities her son was gay, but she failed to show up as a prosecution witness at the trial. Homosexuality is banned in the West African country. It is punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to $2,500 (about Sh250, 000). Defence lawyer, Abdoul Daff, said the mother’s failure to appear in court should have caused the case to collapse. “There was neither material evidence nor testimony in order to corroborate the claims,” he added. “So, we take note of this and we will see what to do next.”
Nigerian army chief ambushed Suspected Boko Haram militants ambushed a convoy carrying the new head of the Nigerian army, the military says. The ambush, which took place on Saturday in North-Eastern Borno state, led to a clash in which one soldier and at least five of the militants were killed. Army chief Gen Tukur Buratai took up his post in July after the president Buhari sacked the heads of the military for failing to end Boko Haram’s insurgency. Ugandan peacekeepers charged over Somali killings Three Ugandan soldiers have been charged over last month’s killing of a group of civilians in Somalia, an African Union (AU) official has said. Maman Sidikou, the head of the AU in Somalia, apologised to the families of the seven people killed in the attack. The AU had previously denied that the incident took place. According to the campaign group Human Rights Watch, AU troops from Uganda began shooting at men at a wedding party after coming under fire. Witnesses said that the troops entered several houses in Merca, 70km south of the capital Mogadishu, after a grenade attack on their convoy. Mr Sidikou admitted on
Friday that seven civilians had been killed. “We have established that, on that occasion, seven civilians died following an incident involving our troops,” he said in a statement. “I would like, on behalf of the African Union, to offer my sincere apology for these deaths. We regret these deaths,” he added. The three AU soldiers have now been indicted and are waiting to be arraigned, according to the statement. “I have instituted a board of inquiry composed of military, civilian and police officers who are not from the contingent concerned in order to ensure impartiality,” Mr Sidikou said. Witnesses described the incident to Human Rights
Watch. “At one house, where the Moalim Iidey family was celebrating a wedding, the soldiers separated the men from the women and shot the six adult men - four brothers, their father, and an uncle,” HRW said in a statement. It was alleged that 11 people were killed. AU troops have been in the Somalia since 2007 helping various UN-backed governments fight the alShabaab militant group. “Our soldiers are operating in a very complex environment,” Mr Sidikou said in the AU statement. “We will continue to appeal to our host communities to facilitate the work of our troops in the fight against alShabaab.”

Massive migrant rescue off Libya About 4,400 migrants were rescued from boats off the coast of Libya on Saturday, in one of the biggest single-day operations mounted to date, Italy’s coastguard has said. It said it had received distress calls from more than 20 vessels. The route from Libya to Italy is one of the busiest for those trying to enter Europe. More than 2,000 people have died this year in attempts to reach Europe in overcrowded, unseaworthy boats. Of the 264,500 migrants the United Nations says have crossed the Mediterranean so far this year, close to 104, 00 have landed in Italy. Another 160,000 arrived in Greece. Two Italian navy ships were involved in
Saturday’s rescue effort. Responding to two wooden boats in danger of sinking, the Cigala Fulgosi picked up 507 people and the Vega 432, the navy said. Various other Italian vessels were involved in the rescue effort, as well as the Norwegian military ship Siem Pilot, which has been deployed as part of the EU’s Triton patrol mission. A boat belonging to humanitarian group Doctors without Borders rescued 311 people, including a newborn baby. Humanitarian groups say the surge in numbers is because of conflicts and repression in Africa and the Middle East, and European governments should do more to create safe routes to Europe.

WASOJALI
ARE THE NEXT BIG BOY BAND
W
ho is Wasojali and what does that name signify? We are a group of four young up and coming artistes with a passion for music. The group is made up of Ibrahim Juma, Juma Mbaruk, Omar Juma and Hamisi Mohamed. The name Wasojali is a Swahili word that describes our humble beginning. It simply means we are determined and ready for obstacles that may come our way. Tell us about your musical journey? We ventured into the music industry as solo artistes. We all had the individual drive and wanted so much to penetrate the music industry but were all held a back due to lack of funds to record. We never gave up and would continuously go to Greenhouse studios to persuade the producers to record us for free. We eventually got a sponsor to pay for our recording sessions. He then advised us to record as a group and that was the beginning of this journey in April of this year. Who produces your music and why? We have been working with Noiza of Greenhouse recording studios who we believe understand our style and are ready to work with us as we grow in the music industry. How would you describe your genre of music? Our style is a far off bongo flava with a ‘chakacha’ and rhumba fusion. We are however soon going to stand out as a versatile group once our works get out there to our fans. What other genres are you interested in doing or have you done? Although we haven’t explored various
other genres, we have tried hip hop and reggae and believe we could hack those well. What inspires your compositions? We are inspired by our day to day experiences in life but we are taking this musical path seriously and are following trends in the music industry. This helps us in coming up with content that would appeal to our audiences across the country and beyond. Which Kenyan artiste (s) would you like to work with? We have always admired Sauti Sol. Their music is inspiring and they keep on releasing hit after hit. It would be an honor to work with them on a track. Internationally, Chris Brown would be ideal. We love his vocals and his choreography is great too. What challenges have you faced as a new act in the music industry? Lack of funds is a major challenge to most of the new artistes. We are however glad to have found a breakthrough. A sponsor who is ready to pay for our recordings and who has been managing us for about five months now. As new artistes, we also need a lot of exposure so as to familiarize ourselves with the industry. Where do you want to be in the next 3 years? We are quite focused and are continuously writing songs and will embark on recording the same. We want to hit the music industry with our music and get to a level where we are a household name, thereafter we are optimistic that by the grace of God we shall reap the fruits of our hard work.

PeoPle fall in love for different reasons.

Noel and Matayo’s Wedding N
ormally, you would be forgiven to think that a combination of ocean blue, orange and yellow colors is a disaster waiting to happen, but not after attending Noel Kahoya and Matayo Mwenye’s wedding. If anything, the colors only made the garden wedding even brighter, complementing the bright sunshine that decided to grace the special day. Noel and Matayo met in 2007 and in the same year, Matayo proposed to Noel. “She declined at first, but I didn’t give up. After a month, she accepted my proposal and well, the rest is history,” the groom told X Access. The couple has been living together ever since, only officiating their union close to ten years later. People fall in love for different reasons, and in Noel and Matayo’s case, the qualities of being God fearing, caring and loving brought the two love birds together. “I fell in love with his patient and caring nature,” Noel told us. Last Saturday marked the long awaited day and the Kenya Students Christian Fellowship garden in Westlands was sparkling in blue, orange and yellow this it would appear was the dress code by both the bridal party and invited guests. The bridal party in this case was more of an entourage, comprising more than twenty maids and flower girls. The groom’s party was ironically fewer in number, with five groom’s men who had to work really hard
to give equal attention especially on the dance floor to at least four brides maids each! Matayo’s attention however, was only on the guest of honor, his bride, who was immaculately dressed in a white mermaid gown which modestly hugged her petite figure. Matayo wore a dark blue suit with a white shirt to match his bride’s white gown and a cream tie as well. Being a Luhya wedding, singing, and especially dancing took up more time at the wedding than the vows and preaching. Even before the couple was declared man and wife, there were several dance sessions in between the sermon which the officiator had to cut short much to the disappointment of the attendees. After the vows and ring exchange however, everyone was free to put their best foot forward as the couple and the bridal party retreated for their photoshoot session and the guests were treated to authentic luhya delicacies. More dancing then followed when the photo and lunch session was over, and it took a lot of effort for the guests to realize it was getting late and that they had to go home. We even spotted the bride getting rid of her silver high heels to get more comfortable on the dance floor! Later, the couple took off for their honeymoon to a destination that they opted not to reveal. Congratulations to Noel and Matayo.

The red carpet was awash with the very best of high slits, plunging neck lines, colour cropping and blocking and everything in between. Sarah Hassan stood out in gold, while color blocking came out as a must try for many men who thought going bright in different colors wasn’t cool. Here is what stood out for us.

Remember their sensational hit Nishike, which was followed closely by the emotional hit Nerea? They are now back, this time round with a twerk song. Let’s hope the reason that the boy band jumps in between message-extremes is to keep fans and rivals in anticipation and not because they may be slowly losing it.

Following this shortage, Promasidor Kenya Limited is offering extensive agricultural services to farmers in

...in Kenya Hockey Union Premier League weekend action Wazelendo picked four points out of the available six in Kenya Hockey Union Premier League matches played at City Park Hockey Stadium over the weekend. Wazalendo beat Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U) 1-0 on Saturday to bag all the three points, then managed to come back from a goal down to force a one all draw against 2012 Champions, Sikh Union (Nairobi Simba). Eric Ochieng scored Wazalendo’s
lone goal against KCA-U while David Wafula rounded Sikh’s defence after he was set by United States International University Africa –USIU-A women’s team head coach James Mwangi to level things up after Jaspreet Khalsi deflected Castro Kaluna’s shot in the 47th minute to give Sikh the lead. KCA-U however put behind that disappointing result when they stunned Kenyatta University (KU) 2-0 in their subsequent match
of the past weekend. Sammy Mwisa and Lenox Onyango scored a goal in each half to hand Kevin Oduor side a convincing win and all important three points out of the available six. Chase Sailors however had no mercy for the Wazalendo Youth whom they hammered 5-0 in the national men’s pool A match on Saturday. Captain George Mutira scored a treble with Hosbon Odundo
Untried Kenyan volleyball side jets out Friday for Congo An inexperienced Kenya women’s volleyball team will jet out this Friday, August 28 for Congo Brazzaville clearly aware of the big challenge ahead of them in the African Games. Kenyan side has only three experienced players with most prominent figure in the young squad being that of former Kenyan number one libero Judith Tarus
whose career has been resuscitated by Paul Gitau after club and national team head coach David Lung’aho dropped her whole at the peak of her career in 2011. Tarus was called back to the national team for the first time since 2011, where she last represented Kenya at the World Cup in Japan. The other experienced players are Esther Mwombe

whose several attempts to break through the senior national team in the right attacking position have often hit a snag in recent years. Loice Ragot is the other fairly experienced player, who will captain the side. Tarus was dropped from the national team by Lung’aho but Paul Gitahi drafted her into the Congo squad and she is expected to play a lead role in reception despite having not played any competitive match in the past four years, both at Club and national team level. Kenya who are in the same pool with Algeria, Cameroon and Cape Verde will have other rookies of Kenya Prisons trio-Joys Lusenaka, Edith Wisa and Ann Lowem who made the cut into the final squad despite having only trained for three days with the rest of the squad named last Friday. Assistant coach Josp Baraza believes that Kenya has a chance of finish at the podium.
scoring Sailors’ two goals in a one sided affair. Park Road Tigers and Daystar played another five-goal thriller in the other national league match also played at City Park. Captain David Omwaka and James Okwari scored two quick goals in the 59th and 68th minutes respectively to give Tigers a 3-2 win over Daystar. Conrad Mandela had given Daystar the lead in the 14th minute through
a penalty corner but Eric Nganga cancelled the lead in the 39th minute. Kennedy Mweke then took Daystar ahead once again after he connected a defence splinting pass but Okweri cut short Daystar fans celebrations with his field goal in the 59th minute. Captain Omwaka put the last nail on the ahead when he converted a penalty corner to hand Tigers a slim 3-2 win.

Rudisha favourite for Tuesday 800m final Two of the fastest athletes in the history of the event, David Rudisha and Nijel Amos, by the will of the draw, had to meet in the semi-finals. After Sunday’s race, one of them continues his run for IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015 medals, while the other had to wrap up his campaign. In the first of three semi-finals, all the athletes seemed inclined to run fast, but no one wanted to lead. Poland’s Adam Kszczot had to take on this responsibility 200 metres into the race. He remained in pole position all the way, immediately reacting to every threat. Being at the front also saved him from involvement in a slight collision between Thimjen Kupers and the defending champion Mohammed Aman with about 200 metres to go. Kszczot looked like a clear winner while he was powerfully charging down the home stretch while his closest pursuer, Kenya’s Alfred Kipketer, was struggling and losing his form. However with 50 metres to go, the Pole started to run out of steam and the race ended with a blanket finish of four. The photo finish showed that Kszczot still came out on top with a time of 1:44.97 and the 18-year-old Kipketer, the youngest man in the field and a
former world youth champion over two laps of the track, was the runner up, just 0.02 behind the pair capturing the two automatic qualifying spots. Aman and the Frenchman PierreAmbroise Bosse, two other participants of the blanket finish, set themselves up for a possible qualification by time by posting 1:45.01 and 1:45.02, respectively. However, Aman was eventually disqualified for obstructing Kupers and forfeited his place in the final. The participants of the second semifinal didn’t seem to learn the danger of allowing Rudisha to lead in a preliminary round from yesterday’s heats and this race ended by producing one of the biggest upsets of the night. Rudisha set a moderate pace right from the start, taking the field through in a gentle 54.04, almost two seconds slower than in the first semi-final. As his rivals didn’t seem in the mood to make a move, the London 2012 Olympic Games champion saved his energy for the home stretch and his finishing spurt was impossible to match, coming home the clear winner in 1:47.70. Behind the Kenyan, there was a fierce battle for the second automatic
qualification spot between Amos and the Qatar’s Musaeb Balla. Balla came up on the inside close to the curb, with Amos out in lane two. He stuck his chest out on the line to clinch the runner-up spot in 1:47.93. The Botswanan was a mere 0.03 behind but with this semifinal being so slow, it was quickly known that no one else would progress to the final other than the first two and last year’s Diamond Race winner was out. In the last and the fastest semi-final, the world leader Amel Tuka once again chased the initial race leader, Ferguson Rotich, down from the back of the field and edged him out on the line, clocking 1:44.84. Rotich, who was just 0.01 behind the much-improved Bosnian, made it three for three for Kenya as far as 900m finalists were concerned.

Cullen beats Field in Sikh Rally Raid
TOP DRAWER STUNTS: Anwar Shazar during a past Raid action.
Gray Cullen clocked 3:49.17 minutes to restrict biker Rose Field to second overall position in the Sikh Union National Rally Raid Championship which culminated in Naivasha over the weekend. Cullen, navigated by Jon Bovard in a Land Rover hybrid (The Frog) is seeking a second straight car class championship title in the Field who rode a Husqvarna FE350 savoured a cut-throat dash with the podium finishers as he consolidated his lead on the bikes log. Alan De Boer was all smiles as he settled for third overall position (and second in bikes) followed by 17 year old Tejas Hirani on 4th. Despite winning the buggy class, Hirani- who is proceeding to
Europe next month for the last three rounds of the FIA World Rally Cross RX Lites series in Spain, Turkey and Italy- had to contend with playing second fiddle to the podium finishers after incurring a penalty for missing a control. Shazar Anwar in a CanAm 450 finished fifth overall but went home with the top quads prize beating Fabio Colombo to second in his category. Colombo finished 9th overall. The much fancied the ex-Baja winning Lexus 570 entered for the very first time in the Sikh Union organised event exited on Day 1 following a mishap on a sticky stretch. Arsenal vs Liverpool: Match Preview
Brendan Rodgers is confident he has found the blueprint for Liverpool to record a rare win at Arsenal on Monday. Liverpool have won once in their 12 visits to Emirates Stadium, a 2-0 Barclays Premier League victory in August 2011, and were beaten 4-1 in last season’s corresponding fixture four months ago. But Rodgers believes his side, buoyant
after beginning the season with successive 1-0 wins over Stoke City and AFC Bournemouth, have what it takes to turn the tables on Arsene Wenger’s men this time around. “If you assess the games we’ve had against Arsenal, especially at home, we’ve had dominance of the ball,” Rodgers said. “If you assess the last 10 games they’ve lost at home, the teams that have won have had
dangerous possession. “The winners have averaged four shots on target with 43 per cent possession. You can’t dominate the ball, but you can dominate space. Tactically, we arrive with a good mind of how to win it.” Rodgers’ plans could be affected by the fitness of Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool captain was substituted early in the second half of Monday’s
win over AFC Bournemouth due to a foot problem. “We’re just assessing Jordan by the day,” Rodgers said. “We’ll see how he goes over the next 48 hours and take it from there.” Liverpool have no new injury concerns, with Christian Benteke, who scored his first competitive goal for the club against AFC Bournemouth, set to lead the line
again. Wenger is eager for Arsenal to kick-start their campaign at home following a shock 2-0 defeat there by West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season.

Sore Kiplagat not
returning to AK Former Athletics Kenya AK President Isaiah Kiplagat will not be returning to his ‘home’ despite his unsuccessful shot at IAAF Vice Presidency post last week. Kiplagat had ‘installed’ Jack Tuwei whom he handpicked to replace him against AK’s constitution and that raised fears that the octogenarian athletics administrator who has ruled AK for the past 23 years, until he stepped aside last May have returned to Riadha House. But in his first address to the media since his double loss in the IAAF elections, where he lost the VC and Council Member slots, ailing Kiplagat announced that he will not return to AK. A sore Kiplagat pointed fingers at Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Arts Dr Hassan Wario for his aborted attempt for the second top most seat in the world of athletics. His 64 votes saw him finish last among the eight contestants for the vice presidents’ post. The second bid to

retain his council member post suffered the same fate. “I did not have the necessary government support that other candidates enjoyed. But the most painful part is when I learnt that the Cabinet Secretary asked the European President to ask him
members not to support my bid for a seat in the IAAF,” Kiplagat was quoted on local sports website. Wario is also in China on official government business and was at the National Stadium for the athletics but he is yet to meet team Kenyan athletes.
KING LEWIS: Mercedes’ F1 driver Lewis Hamilton salutes the crowd after winning the Belgian Grand Prix yesterday.
IT’S Too early to start talking about titles - LEWIS Hamilton Lewis Hamilton said it was “way too early” to start thinking about winning the world title following his sixth victory in 11 races this season in Sunday’s Belgium Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver dominated Sunday’s race to move 28 points clear of team-mate Nico Rosberg. Hamilton is more than a win ahead of the German with eight races remaining. “To come away from the best holiday I have ever had and win was fantastic. To translate pole positions into wins is what I want to do,” Hamilton said. “I felt good when I woke up today. I am the strongest and happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I love my job - it’s the greatest
job in the world.” Hamilton has scored 10 pole positions in 11 races so far this season, but before Belgium had converted only five of his nine into victories. His tally of poles means he now cannot be beaten to Formula 1’s pole position trophy, a concept that was introduced last year and was won by Rosberg. But Hamilton, who would equal his hero Ayrton Senna’s tally of three titles if he wins the crown again this year, said he was not interested in that achievement. “The pole trophy is not particularly exciting but getting poles is definitely a great thing,” he said. “Naturally, winning the World
Championship is the goal. I would give up everything else, all the poles, the pole position trophy, for the World Championship so that’s really the goal. “But I’m really happy with how the qualifying has gone this year. “It’s been a huge step for me and here the plan was to try to convert that pole position and the speed that I had in qualifying into the race. “I feel like I did that and I’m sure that there will be areas to improve on which I will continue to try to work on.” Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff said that Rosberg had to start beating Hamilton in qualifying to have a chance of the title.
