MPs in life-saving Kamukunji TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2015
The National Assembly has today convened an informal meeting referred to as a the ‘Speaker’s Kamukunji’ to rally support for the proposed extension of the deadline to pass constitutional bills and at the same time also set the period of extension, whether six, nine or 12months. Leader of Majority Aden Duale was expected to lobby MPs to support the extension when it comes to the floor to ensure they gather the twothirds threshold required to pass the motion. For the motion to sail through, 233 members will be required to vote in its favor failure to which the motion is defeated and any willing Kenyan may petition the High Court over the matter. In determining the matter, the High court may according Article 261(6) of the Constitution make declaratory orders and set a period for which the law may be passed. If this is not met, the Chief Justice after receiving a proper brief may then advice the president to initiate the dissolution of parliament (both the Senate and National Assembly). Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi last week issued orders barring all MPs from travelling outside the country in order to ensure they attend the Kamkunji and also the sitting for the threshold to be met. In the Senate on the other hand leader of majority Kithure Kindiki says an extension of one year would
be adequate to ensure the Bills passed are of good quality saying the proposed extension was not something out of the ordinary. “The extension is being hyped and dramatized for no good reason because the drafters of the constitution even anticipated it. I really hope that the National Assembly will be able to raise the numbers to pass the Motion for extending time. I think we should extend for one year because the world is not coming to an end,” Prof Kindiki said. He said the fact that the Constitution required that all Bills undergo public participation also meant that even if they had the will power to pass the Bills before the August 27 deadline it was impossible to ensure the processes which a Bill has to undergo were met.“We in the Senate though we could have a special sitting but we realized we don’t even have all the Bills. I have received nine Bills (from Senate), my brother Aden Duale has received about 15 Bills, there are about three others that are yet to be finalized,” he said. Kindiki added that they were avoiding mistakes made by the 10th parliament that hurriedly passed several Bills most of which were mediocre and were now being rectified stating that, “you cannot ‘straight jacket’ legislation, it is a political process — sometimes you are forced to withdraw a law or even forced to halt the process to seek political consensus.”
FACING DISSOLUTION: The national Assembly at a previous sitting. MPs have convened an informal sitting today to lobby support for the extension of a deadline for key constitutional Bills. Failure to pass the extension will leave MPs at risk of being sent home.
“Most of those Bills were faulty and have grave errors…we have been forced to comb through them and bring amendments. We need to do quality legislation,” he added. He absolved Parliament from blame over the delay saying the Bills had come in late some owing to their sensitive nature. We have received all those Bills in the last three weeks, there was huge delay in the part of the Executive to generate the Bills, however even for the executive, the situation was not easy as almost all those the Bills are emotive if not controversial, if not divisive Bills.” He cited Bills as the Historical injustices Bill, Community Land
Majority of Kenyans believe Obama visit was beneficial: Survey A majority of Kenyans have expressed optimism that last month’s visit by US President Barack Obama will benefit the country. A survey conducted by Ipsos found out that at least two-thirds of Kenyans from both sides of the political divide believe Obama’s visit marketed Kenya in the eyes of the world. The findings released today morning by the pollster say 66 percent of Jubilee supporters believe the visit has put Kenya on the global map. 62 percent of those supporting Cord share those views. And Ipsos attribute the little disparity to the fact that President Uhuru Kenyatta interacted more with the US leader than opposition chief Raila Odinga. Although Mr Odinga attended a State dinner in honour of Obama, the opposition figures only met the US president officially for about 30 minutes after he addressed the nation
at the Safaricom Indoor Arena, Kasarani. “Jubilee supporters expressed much optimism than Cordaligned respondents, perhaps a reflection of the fact that President Kenyatta was clearly the main figure with whom Obama interacted, in contrast to the relatively little attention he gave the Cord (opposition) leadership,” reads part of the Ipsos report. Trade, employment and general development were among the main gains most respondents listed as the benefits the country will get. These are followed by security to counter-terrorism and corruption, but at decidedly lower levels, 13 percent and 8 percent respectively. Only minor contrasts emerge in terms of the supporters of the main political parties. The survey also indicates that 94 percent of Kenyans were aware of the US President visit.
Overally only about two-thirds of Kenyans are convinced that the country will obtain any substantial benefits from the visit, with about one-quarter convinced it will not. The remainder of the population remains undecided. “Given the massive publicity regarding Obama’s visit beginning well before his arrival on July 24, it comes as no surprise that the overwhelming majority of Kenyans were aware of it,” the report said. Only at the Coast and in North Eastern was such awareness much below universal at 86 percent and 56 percent respectively. The survey was undertaken between July 30, 2015 and August 9, 2015. This was immediately after the departure of U.S. President who had avoided Kenya during his three previous visits to Africa. This face-to-face survey was conducted at the household level, and involved 2,002 respondents.
Bill, agreements on natural resources Bill, and minimum and maximum acreage Bills as among those expected to elicit emotions and debate as they shouldered most of the issues that have divided Kenyans over the years, some that even the Truth Justice and reconciliation commission (TJRC) failed to resolve. He further defended the Executive over the delay in submitting the Bills saying time was lost as the Executive attempted to build consensus within itself and among other stakeholders to ensure the concerns were accommodated. “If we had got these Bills earlier we would have processed most if not all the Bills by now, so I think it would
be inappropriate to blame either the National Assembly or the Senate. He said the Senate would be watching the process keenly since the repercussions of the failure to meet the deadline affected both houses. The motion will be moved by Constitutional Implementation and Oversight committee chairman Njoroge Baiya.

Governors blame treasury over strikes by health workers Governors have absolved themselves from blame over the constant strikes of health workers across counties and attributed it to delay in the release of funds by the treasury. While appearing before the parliamentary health committee earlier today, governors Isaac Ruto (Bomet), James Ongwae (Kisii), Jack Ranguma (Kisumu) and Paul Chepkwony (Kericho) said the delay affects all county workers and not only doctors. “The delay of funds does not only affect the doctors but all county workers and it is occasioned by the delay of release of funds by the treasury,” Ruto told the committee. He said the doctors have now not received their July salaries. He asked the national treasury to release such funds in time to avoid the delay. “The money that we will get from the treasury now will cater for the July salaries meaning that we will still have a problem with county workers over the August salaries” Ruto said. Ruto attributed the issue of salaries, promotions and harmonization of
allowances as the three main issues causing the doctors at the counties to go on strike. Kisii Governor James Ongwae said the Council of Governors had a meeting with the salaries and Remuneration Commission and the commission asked for more time up to end of September in order to address the issue. “Salary is a budgetary issue which can only be handled by the national government and we ask them to come in at this time,” Ongwae said. To prevent further strikes Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma said CoG agreed to form Health Service Commission to specifically deal with issues of health at the county level. Yesterday five trade unions in the health sector controlling about 1,600 workers have issued a two-week strike notice that could paralyse health services in the counties. The unions said the notice would expire on August 30 and if their demands would not have been met, they would down their tools as from September 1.

Roughly Nine out of every ten Kenyan adults views social media as a basic commodity. Data from leading research group, Pew Global has revealed that many local Twitter and Facebook users cannot go a single day without updating their status or posting a tweet. In fact, their numbers show that on average, 88 per cent of Kenyan adults use at least one of these platforms every single day of their lives. Teachers threaten strike if court ruling is ignored Teachers have vowed to paralyse learning in public schools countrywide upon re-opening next month if the government fails to implement their salary increments as was ruled by the Supreme Court. Following yesterday’s decision by the Supreme Court that declined to stop the implementation of a 50 to 60 percent pay rise that was awarded by the lower court, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has issued an ultimatum asking the government to pay as was directed or face the wrath of teachers. He reiterated demands for the pay increase to be done immediately; failure to which, he threatened, public school teachers would resort to industrial action. “I am properly guided on the issue

NEWS BRIEFS Hope as Sierra Leone discharges last Ebola patient Sierra Leone has released its last known Ebola patient, according to the World Health Organization. 35-year-old Adama Sankoh was discharged from a treatment centre in the northern Bombali District on Monday morning. The country hasn’t reported a new infection for more than two weeks, according to the National Ebola Response Centre (NERC). However, a small number of cases are still being reported in neighbouring Guinea. The milestone comes 15 months after the outbreak was declared in Sierra Leone. Almost 4,000 people have died of Ebola in the country since then. President Ernest Bai Koroma attended the celebrations at the clinic run by International Medical Corps. Vanessa Wolfman, the Medical Director at the facility, said: “Today is a day of hope. People hope this is the beginning of the end. We have fought for so long.” The country still has 28 people in quarantine. They will continue to be monitored until the end of the week in case they develop symptoms.

The rights group details how people arrested for allegedly taking part in demonstrations have been mistreated to extract information. The government has not yet responded. Dozens of people died following clashes between police and protesters and many were arrested. Amnesty International alleges that some were beaten with iron bars and burnt with acid. One man said that he had a five-litre container full of sand tied to his testicles. Another says that he revealed the names of other demonstrators after he was deprived of sleep and threatened with violence. The rights group has called for the beatings and torture to stop and wants an “independent and impartial investigation”.
British Bill target illegal immigrants with jail terms People who work illegally in England and Wales will face up to six months in prison, under proposals to be included in the forthcoming Immigration Bill. The bill, to be introduced in the autumn, will also contain measures against takeaway restaurants and off-licences which employ illegal migrants. Penalties will also include an unlimited fine and wages being seized. Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said the government “would continue to crack down on abuse” of the system. The government has made a series of immigration announcements over the summer of which this is the latest. CS Kandie dispels smuggling fears of Ugandan sugar Sugar coming from Uganda into Kenya is duty free according to Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie. Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Kandie ascertained that this is in line with East African Community Customs Union Protocol which protect goods from any member state from being subjected to custom duty. “Article 14 of the protocol provides that goods originating from partner state and satisfy the EAC Rules of Origin are eligible for community tariff treatment. This means goods entering another partners state will neither be quantitatively restricted nor subjected to custom duty,’’ she explained. According to her, the information about Ugandan
sugar being subjected to custom duty is misleading and only applies to goods that do not meet EAC Rules of Origin. “In line with EAC commitment the Ugandan products including sugar will only be accorded preferential tariff treatment as long as it is produced in Uganda and meets the EAC Rules of Origin.’’ She said. ‘’Should these products including sugar exported to Kenya from Uganda be deemed as not meeting the EAC Rules or Origin, they would not be accorded community tariff treatment and thus would attract 100 percent duty,” the CS added. The CS made her statement amid fear from opposition that if Kenya import sugar from
Uganda, it will create room for smuggling of the commodity from other countries. Kandie has called the opposition not to politicize sugar deal since Kenya has been importing sugar from Uganda though the situation worsened when the president paid a visit to his counterpart to not only accelerate imports but also improve trade ties between the two. ‘’Currently, Uganda remains a major market for Kenyan goods because in 2014, Kenya exported good worth Sh 60.8 billion yet imported goods valued at Sh 17.6 billion only from Uganda and the trade between two countries will remain in favour of Kenya,’’ concluded the CS.

Additional countries where Liquid will now have a presence in are Benin, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Republic, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Sudan, South Sudan and Swaziland. At a time when MTN is overhauling its South African operations to regain market share from the country’s biggest phone carrier Vodacom Group Ltd, the partnership is seen as a move to achieve just that.

FANS BEHAVING BADLY: the curious case of Gor and afC fanatics
E
very country has its own problems and in Kenya, football violence is fast becoming a nightmare. Football violence has become part of the Kenyan culture with extreme cases leading to loss of lives such as the 2010 incident where seven people died in a stampede at Nyayo National Stadium. Such occurrences have even prompted bans on fans from entering particular stadia, for example in 2013 when the AFC Leopards team was forced to play in an empty stadium after their fans were banned from the City Stadium following violent riots that led to loss property and scores of injuries. Gor Mahia matches are no better, with fans leaving a streak of violence wherever they go, from Mombasa to Machakos and earlier this month, in Nairobi where they torched City Council and police vehicles in the CBD. How come a sport that is supposed to bring people from all walks of life together for the sole purpose of relaxation almost always ends up in riots and police combats? Well, the Kenyan football scene has been injected with three lethal drugs namely ethnicity, fanaticism and hooliganism. We may sing the positive ethnicity song daily to support the fact that Kenyan football thrives behind unhidden divisions along ethnical lines, with the two most prominent football clubs, Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards, openly ‘belonging’
to two particular tribes. However, there is nothing positive about the violence that rocks football tournaments especially between Gor and AFC every time they meet on the football pitch. Often the meet ups turns into a battle field with the weapons of choice being stone missiles and other blunt objects. While not all fans may have negative tribal inclinations, Kenyans are good at going with the flow and the mob psychology often compels law abiding fans to join in the violence that could have been offset by one or two tribal intolerant fans. Fanaticism is also a contributing factor to the Kenyan football violence. Every so often we hear of a football die hard committing suicide because their club of choice lost in a tournament. Never mind that these incidences often involve international clubs which the fanatic has never, and would never interact with. Kenyan football fans have the weakness of getting too carried away by occurrences and supremacy battles so much that tournaments involving teams like Gor Mahia and AFC rarely make it to the end and when they do, fans of the losing team only concede defeat after a battle. Additionally, betting organizations like Sportspesa also fuel these riots since fans who bet all their money on the losing teams have to find a way to blow off steam, and what better way than to turn
on the fans of the club that stole the show? An emerging explanation for the rampant violence trailing football derbies in Kenya is the revelation that thieves have coined a new stealing technique; starting riots and picking pockets of fans amidst the chaos and confusion that ensues especially in crowded stadia. It has been discovered that these hooligans attend the matches dressed in the jerseys of the two participating teams, eventually retaining the jersey of the losing team and feigning disappointment in a violent manner that unsuspecting fans emulate and escalate into deadly riots and stampedes. But Kenya is not alone, in 2012 Egypt lost some 74 people in a similar stampede while 22 others also died earlier this year after unruly fans stormed the pitch. Last weekend, the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby was halted prematurely after AFC and Gor Mahia fans became enraged following a controversial penalty, but was it really that controversial, or was it just an excuse to stir up trouble? Football and Stadia management are mum on the matter each throwing blame and counter blames. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero threw a ban on any Gor /AFC match until fans can behave. But is this all that can be done to tame the violence monster?

Death and burial among the Luhyas In the Luhya community, once a member of the community dies, a group of women will run around the village announcing the death by wailing. It is through this that the members of the family gather in the house of the bereaved to share in their sorrow. The casket is then placed on the veranda for viewing and it is during this that one occasionally finds a mourner who will address the dead person as if they were alive asking questions like why they had to depart so soon. In some cases, the mourners even slash down banana plants to express anger at the gods for the loss. As evening approaches, fires are lit outside the home and the mourners gather around as they keep each other company and share stories, mostly memories of the departed. As the women sing songs to uplift the family, the men look forward to a bullfight usually held in respect of the deceased. The burial does not take place for another two or three days in order to give adequate time for the viewing of the body. The time allocated for this activity depends on the rank held by the deceased. During the mourning period, the family is responsible for feeding the visitors but the visitors also chip in from time to time. On the burial date, a village elder runs the program and it extends to early afternoon, depending on the seniority of the deceased. It is after the burial that the bullfight is held to honor the deceased. One week later a ceremony called Lovengo is held where hair of close relatives is trimmed.

Aliza Jebet Kitui
e can safely describe Aliza Jebet Kitui as an artist with multiple abilities. This girl can draw, paint, and customize clothes with her painting technique as well as painting on T- shirts. She started this as a teenager where she drew and colored most of her books. Her mother being her number one fan urged her to keep up the good work. “I made cards during the holidays and my mother as my self-proclaimed marketer, made sure everyone at her work place knew about it. So I sold holiday cards, and bookmarks when I went back to school. I enjoyed every bit of it,” she tells XAccess. In campus, she explored this world some more by painting on T-shirts and with motivation from those closest to her she painted one shirt after another then handbags until she mastered. She does a lot more painting on canvas and crafts. “It’s hard to put it to words; my art is a part of me. It’s how I see things, my form of expression. An innovative abstract view of things.” She says most of her work involves using paint, fabric leather and cotton twirl which she uses for the weaving. How long it takes to complete one of her creations is dependent on the design. For some it takes a couple of hours and others like painting on a dress can take
up to a day or more. For Aliza, shapes, color and nature are her major sources of inspiration. She however likes to observe her surroundings, as no one usually knows when they will have a light bulb moment. She is one of a kind as she hand paints all her pieces. She pays attention to the very last detail and tries to think like there is no box. “Each piece is unique. They say the devil is in the detail. I learnt from a wise guy who taught me a few things about business, the true meaning of quality. I pay a lot of attention to detailing,” she says. Marketing is not her forte and as a result, became a challenge as she was starting out. The other challenge was finding her own style, something that would stand out. “Convincing people that this is actually a real job can be very discouraging when no one really understands what you are doing, and where you are coming from. ‘Selling’ my vision has been quite the journey, “she tells X Access. Aside from the challenges, she thinks that Kenya has a bright future in terms of art. “Its way better than where it was a few years back. People are becoming more receptive and appreciative of art. I think the art culture is growing and that’s all we can really ask for; growth. There’s a lot of promise. We just need to keep doing what we do, never give up. Keep pushing the vision.”

The in thing right now is nostalgic sound. This is where you develop your idea but borrow from already existent sounds and tunes. Everyone knows the Diwali riddim and the Awilo hook, if you would look at it from a purely creative angle you would appreciate the genius in the fusion’ he said in their defiance. aboutLove
Just like global warming, cheating in relationships has become a universal issue. Cheating does not have a universal code of practice and men and women have different tendencies when it comes to eating from the forbidden cookie jar. We sought a professional outlook from Ivy Mbula, a relationship therapist in Nairobi and here is her comparison of men vs women’s cheating behavior.
men vs women and the
gAmes people play
Motivational factors
Unlike the traditional era where men would have sex with multiple women in a bid to get as many male children as possible, the modern man today cheats mostly for sexual exploration. A woman on the other hand ventures out of her relationship in search of emotional connection that goes beyond sexual relations, a factor that lacks especially in abusive relationships or relationships where the man is already being unfaithful.
Cheating period
Because men cheat in pursuit of sex, they get tired of their mpango wa kando eventually and either go back home or move on to the next lady in line. Women, however, cheat when they find a better emotional haven and since emotions are an unending cycle given their psychological nature, women are likely to get attached
and maintain these side arrangements for life and in extreme cases, abandon their family for the newly found love interest. In short, men create affairs while women create relationships.
Getting busted
It is very easy for a woman to tell when her man has fishy dealings. The man will conspicuously break their routine. Men also easily forget small clues such as love notes in their pockets and messages on their phones which his woman might accidentally (or on purpose) stumble upon. Catching a woman cheating is difficult, probably due to their innate ability to multitask. She will perform all her roles as well as her career obligations in perfect balance with her ongoing infidelity.
Cheating distance
Because of their tendencies to get easily caught, men nowadays
look for affairs far away from home for example with overseas business associates or former schoolmates who live miles away and whose chance of meeting the current are zero. Women on the other hand settle for affairs closer home such as with neighbors, church friends or even the gardener because as mentioned before, they are able to keep their affairs as discreet as required.
Counting losses
When affairs come to light, women have much more to lose than their male counterparts. This is because a woman can easily forgive a cheating spouse, while a man forgiving a cheating wife is a rare occurrence especially in the African culture. Women who cheat eventually find out that they bit more than they could chew and end up losing it all including their reputation in society. Remember Raphael Tuju’s wife?

ASK dr X Dear Dr X,
I have been married to my wife for seven years now but we have never had any children. Recently, we agreed to go for a medical checkup and it turns out that my wife is perfectly fine: I’m the one with the problem. I feel extremely bad because in the recent past, I had started mistreating my wife, assuming that she was barren. I even stood by and watched my sisters ridicule her during a recent family gathering. How do I make things right?
- Josh
Send your agonising queries to adhyambo@x254.co
How cAn I mAke It up to my wIfe After I mIstreAted Her? Dear Josh,
First let me commend you and your wife for going through the medical test to get to the bottom of your childlessness. Many couples assume that it is always the woman at fault whilst scientific studies prove that both parties have a 50-50 responsibility in conception. Regarding your guilt, there is no way out of this one. You need to man up, face
your wife and talk it out. Ensure you humble yourself and ask for her forgiveness and if she is an understanding woman, all will be well. If not, you need to work hard on earning her forgiveness. Remember you let your relatives mock her and for some women, getting over such an ordeal takes time. All the best.
DR X.

Make a list of the symbols and then figure out what they mean to you. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 This isn’t a good day to get together with your romantic partner, Gemini, or even talk on the phone at length. Keep your conversations brief and make arrangements to meet in a few days. Your friend could be in a very agitated state of mind and might take offense at an innocent remark from you. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Some technological gadgets that you make copious use of may go out of whack today, Cancer. This could prove frustrating for you, but don’t vent your frustrations on them. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 You might have some important work to do at home, Virgo, but unexpected visitors might have other ideas for your day. Don’t get angry or frustrated. They’ll probably understand so there’s no need to try to play host when your mind is somewhere else. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Electronic communication could be difficult today, Libra. Everything that can go wrong might go wrong - phones, email, copiers. Driving a car could land you in impossible traffic. If you really need to speak to someone, the best thing to do may be to take a walk and go see them in person. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Money problems may seem to be escalating, Scorpio, and you could be hard-pressed to find a way to deal with them right now. If you wait a day until you’re feeling a little less stressed, you’ll be able to get a better handle on the situation and juggle your budget in order to make it all work. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 You might feel that you’ll go crazy if you don’t get out for a while. But responsibilities may keep you indoors anyway. It’s important to get out. Take a brisk walk around the neighborhood, run a quick errand, return a book to the library. This should bring some relief, at least for now.

YOURSAY MPs should not be passing bills in first place The average Member of Parliament knows nothing about the average Kenyan citizen, so why in hell’s unholy name do we let them pass bills that affect us assuming they have our best
interests in mind? I believe that community leaders and grassroots organisations are the ones who should be drafting policies. At least they know what those of us on the ground floor are
going through. MPs, as we all know, tend to be selfish, greedy and inconsiderate miscreants. Allowing them to pass laws is not only idiotic, it’s irresponsible. —Unhappy Taxpayer, Nairobi

‘Devoted Christians’ should awaken and vote
It has been estimated that less than 20 percent of selfidentifying Christians vote. I believe this is the reason selfserving politicians govern our country. Politicians enact laws God calls abominable. Our
children are taught to hate God and worship the Earth. Body parts of the unborn are sold for profit. Borders are kept open for terrorists and criminals. Allies are abandoned and enemies embraced. Our growing
national debt is unsustainable. Unemployment enslaves millions. Presidents appoint political allies. Arise today Kenyans and start voting for candidates who love their neighbors and care about our —S.B, Kilimani country.
Solving students unrest by banning mocks? I find the Education CS’ explanation and diagnosis for the prevalent unrests in high schools quite hollow and ambiguous. Mock exams cannot be an adequate, anterior and sufficient cause for the frequent student’s strikes
we witness in school these days, neither can banning mock be the ideal diagnosis as Mr. Kaimenyi wants us believe. Mr. Kaimenyi seems to be relying on hypothetical and prima facie evidence verbosely presented to him by his underlings and
school managements and not well researched and tested empirical evidence to ascertain the primal cause of this anomaly It is rational to try listen to students and work with their explanation too. —Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi
Bridle your social media tongues Kenyans I partly concur with my fellow philosophers that there is no such a thing as “bad”, though I disagree on the idea that the concept of “bad” or “good” is deterministic and relativistic. The “badness’ of something is nothing but the “goodness” of something inside-out. Every good thing therefore, comes with its badness attached.
Technological development is good and helpful in all aspects of life. Social network is one of the diverse tenets begotten by such development as we have witnessed lately, and it’s good. We can tweet, Skype, Facebook and email at will, whenever, wherever and however because everyone enjoys the freedom to do exactly that. — Phabian Paul Jr., Huruma
Opposition shouldn’t politicize everything It has emerged that opposition leaders are fighting policies that benefit Kenyans for the sake of furthering their personal goals. This has got to stop! These buggers can politicize anything if they are allowed to roam free. Some of these fools act like they need a shot in the head from a Minnesota Dentist (rest in peace Cecil the lion).
Our MPs and opposition leaders need to understand that getting elected is not about putting down good policies and dog-piling on sustainable initiatives. They need to see that their politics should take a back seat when the needs of the less fortunate are at stake. —Dennis L., Nairobi

Kenya’s Jairus Birech leads the 3,000m Steeplechase field in the finals at the Olympic Stadium in Zimpetu, Mozambique. Getahun Shiferaw led an Ethiopian sweep of medals.
Team Kenya hopes high ahead of Friday trip to Brazzaville Team Kenya’s main aim will be to surpass the 2011 All Africa Games performance in Maputo, Mozambique when the country parades 17 disciplines in Congo, Brazzaville starting September 4-19. Maputo remained the best city so far in terms of medal achievement for Kenya which scooped 49 medals; 13 Gold, 14 Silver and 22 Bronze but that is expected to improve in the 50th edition of the games which return to Congo, hosts of the first edition of the games in 1965 where Kenya scooped 23 medals; 8 Gold, 11
Silver and 4 Bronze. According to Team Kenya’s CEO Charles Nyaberi, the first batch of Kenyan delegation will depart this Friday. The first team to leave will badminton, boxing and volleyball. The tennis team is expected to leave on September 7th ahead of the main competition which start on September 11th. Nyaberi also explained that all teams except Beach Volleyball, Cycling and Swimming will camp at Moi Sports Centre Karasani. A team of six Volleyball pairs is
currently in Mombasa preparing for next week’s national trials to select the final two (one in each gender same as Swimming that has pitched camp in the coastal city. Cycling team is in Murang’a. The Government has constituted a Games Management Committee led by Commissioner of Sports Gordon Oluoch whose main agenda is to complete preliminary accreditation and assess the national federations’ status and progress in the Zonal Qualifications. Nyaberi clarified that Kenya will not
be represented in the other three competitions — namely Meanwhile warring federations like Kenya Hockey Union KHU) and Kenya Bowling Federation which still have cases at the Sports Dispute Tribunal in addition to Fencing and Gymnastics will not send teams to Brazzaville. Bowling bowed out of the continental championships because the version on offer at the games is different from the one they practice while hockey will miss because Congo has no modern pitches to host the
games. It will however be staged in Egypt but will not count as a medal at the Africa Games but rather as an Olympic qualifiers. Football Volleyball men and Basketball failed to grab ticket to Congo. Other than the above disciplines, Kenya will also send teams in athletics, handball, boxing (men), judo (men & women), karate (men & women), taekwondo (men & women), weightlifting (men & women), wrestling (men & women) and paralympic sports (men & women).
SPORTS BRIEFS Olunga leaves Kenya for trials in South Africa Michael Olunga may leave Gor Mahia FC for greener pastures. The striker is scheduled to leave the country in the course of the week for trials with South African side Bidvest Wits FC. If confirmed, Olunga who has scored 15 goals for K’ogalo this season will miss K’Ogalo’s next league game against Bandari FC this Saturday. Meanwhile Ulinzi FC will retain their sixth title of the East Africa Military Games men’s football but the must beat hosts Uganda Defence Forces in Wednesday last match in Kampala. Brian Birgen, suspended for his unsporting behaviour after he protested the referees decisions may return for Kenyan Soldiers after Ulinzi appealed his red card in their match against Tanzania. Rwanda, with seven points are done with their done with their matches but they may also be declared champions should the two teams play a barren draw. A win for Ulinzi will take their point tally to eight while maximum point in favour of the host will hand them the title.
I am clean, says outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter
Outgoing Fifa president Sepp Blatter says he is “clean” and “there is no corruption in football” amid criminal investigations at the world football’s governing body. Blatter 79, president since 1998, will step down in February after he was elected for a fifth term last May amid an inquiry into allegations of systematic bribery. “I know what I have done, what I have not done. I have my conscience and I know I’m an honest man. I am clean. I am not a worried man,” Blatter told BBC. So far, 14 people have been indicted by the United States justice department following claims that bribes and kickbacks of more than 15b were handed out over a 24-year period. A Swiss investigation is also looking into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, leading to speculation that Russia and Qatar could be stripped of football’s flagship event and a re-vote ordered.
Olum’s club Kedah promoted to Malaysian top tier league Kenyan international defender Lawrence Olum’s Kedah FA has been promoted to the Malaysian Super League after finish the season with 48 points. This follows their 5-1 win against DRB-Hicom in last league match played on Friday 21 August. Kedah FA which Olum joined this year from US just went in to the match knowing very well that any slight mishap would handed Palau Penang the title with only a point separating the two teams ahead of the final match. Palau Penang Universiti Teknologi Mara 2-0 in the other match. Meanwhile Dan Ssenrunkuma bad start into the season with his new side, Ulisess continued when they suffered a massive 4-0 loss in the hands of Alshkert over the weekend. Sserunkuma, a former Gor Mahia forward joined Ulisess from Tanzanian Simba after his attempted move back to K’ogalo hit a snag to join a side that is anguishing on bottom of the table with zero points from four matches.
‘Average’ Arsenal held by Liverpool Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has described his squad as “very average” following their 0-0 draw with Liverpool last night in an EPL third match which leaves his side with only four points. This was Arsenal at their most bewildering. They were startlingly poor for so long Liverpool will have to consider this result a source of regret. Arsène Wenger’s men demonstrated some familiar flaws before shaking their heads clear and cannot expect to win the league by playing so chaotically. Yet they could also claim, legitimately, they would have won but for a trigger-happy linesman. It was a perplexing, errorstrewn match, full of missed chances and misplaced passes, and neither team can be fully satisfied with the outcome. On the flipside a case can also be made that Arsenal, for all their shortcomings, could conceivably have pulled off a perplexing and eccentric victory. They will reflect on the first-half goal that was wrongly disallowed for Aaron Ramsey, as well as the chance Olivier Giroud aimed too close to Simon Mignolet during their late onslaught, and it finished, almost implausibly, with their first clean sheet
of the season. As goalless draws go, it was wild and entertaining but maybe not such a bad result for Arsenal given how fragile they look, with Laurent Koscielny suffering a back injury and Per Mertesacker having a virus. Arsenal had not started a Premier League game with both their regular centre-halves missing for 1,225 days and perhaps it was inevitable there would be times when their new-look defence looked susceptible. Even so, it must have been alarming for Wenger to see how dishevelled they were in the first half, when Calum Chambers was a danger to his own team. Chambers passed the ball straight to Philippe Coutinho, inside Arsenal’s penalty area, at one point and there were plenty of other moments when the home side looked raw and accident-prone. For Liverpool there were so many opportunities inside the first half they really ought to have punished Wenger’s team for being so vulnerable. Petr Cech made amends in those moments for his errors against West Ham on the opening weekend and, ultimately, his goalkeeping was the key factor during the spells when
Arsenal looked as if they might lose their opening two league games at home for the first time since 1949. It was rare to see any side, let alone one with title credentials, give the ball away so frequently inside their own half and, even allowing for their absentees, their supporters must have found it jarring to see their lack of organisation, carelessness in defence and tendency to make life difficult for themselves. Wenger admitted later he was “always tempted” to take off Chambers at halftime. His team did, though, take much better care of the ball in the second half, when their opponents operated on the counterattack rather than flooding forward as they had done earlier. Liverpool, with James Milner excelling, still looked dangerous on the break but Arsenal at least reminded everyone in that period they were supposed to be the home side. Alexis Sánchez struck the outside of the post and it needed a brilliant saving tackle from Martin Skrtel to prevent the substitute Theo Walcott going clear on goal in the final exchanges.1
CECH SAVES: Arsenal keeper Petr Cech makes a save during last night’s match. Arsene Wenger has described his squad as “very average” following their 0-0 draw with Liverpool last night.
