onfusion marred the opening day of schools across the country with teachers not sure whether to teach or boycott classes as was directed by their unions. While most schools opened their gates for the third term today, most teachers stayed away from classes except in a few schools. At St. Teresa Primary School in Nairobi, learning began as usual with teachers attending lessons. Teachers who requested not to be named for fear of reprisals confided to X News that they were actually on a go-slow and would wait for tomorrow for directions from their unions. The National Union of Teachers (Knut) insisted today that their members will remain out of classes until the government implements an order to have their salaries increased. “Teachers are out of class today legally because they are demotivated by the fact that the government is yet to implement the increment,” Knut Secretary General Wilson said. He said the union had given the government up to midnight to implement the pay rise. Knut would issue further directions to their members tomorrow if the pay is not in their bank accounts by midnight. The teachers’ employer TSC yesterday ordered that teachers report to work without fail. It argued that it had not received any strike notice from the teachers and that they were expected to report to their respective work stations to perform teaching and administrative duties. .
