MPs warn ministers against Ouko attacks
T
he Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has warned Cabinet Secretaries and heads of other government departments against publicly attacking the Auditor General for releasing a new report that implicated their ministries in graft. Led by PAC chairman Nicholas Gumbo, the
MPs want those named in the report to wait to be summoned by the committee to respond to the queries raised instead of condemning the auditor general before the report is even presented to parliament. “Let us hold our horses until we get the report instead of bashing the Auditor General in public. Such public condemnations are not good for
the fight against graft,” Gumbo said. He said their decision to shield the auditor general should not be seen as an endorsement of the report. “We are not saying that whatever he has presented is the gospel truth but there are avenues for those mentioned in the report to channel their views instead of going public because the office of the
auditor general is independent and should be allowed to carry out its constitutional mandate,” he added. Imbalambala MP Abdikadir Mohamed who is also a member of the committee put on notice those already criticising the Auditor General saying they will dig even deeper to ascertain more facts.
