T

he Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has warned Cabinet Secretaries and heads of other government departments against publicly attacking the Auditor General for releasing a new report that implicated their ministries in graft. Led by PAC chairman Nicholas Gumbo, the

MPs want those named in the report to wait to be summoned by the committee to respond to the queries raised instead of condemning the auditor general before the report is even presented to parliament. “Let us hold our horses until we get the report instead of bashing the Auditor General in public. Such public condemnations are not good for

the fight against graft,” Gumbo said. He said their decision to shield the auditor general should not be seen as an endorsement of the report. “We are not saying that whatever he has presented is the gospel truth but there are avenues for those mentioned in the report to channel their views instead of going public because the office of the

auditor general is independent and should be allowed to carry out its constitutional mandate,” he added. Imbalambala MP Abdikadir Mohamed who is also a member of the committee put on notice those already criticising the Auditor General saying they will dig even deeper to ascertain more facts. Ministers warned against Ouko attacks From Page 1 “If someone is feeling guilty for embezzling public funds, then he has more reasons to worry because we will dig deeper into the report when we get it,” he said. Cabinet Secretaries, among them James Macharia of Health and Henry Rotich

of the National Treasury have publicly accused Mr Edward Ouko of tabling an incomplete report. Others who have also dismissed Mr Ouko’s report include Attorney General Githu Muigai and Foreign Affairs PS Karanja Kibicho, who both say they were not given a chance to defend their dockets. In the report released last week,

Mr Ouko said government ministries and state departments could not account for about Sh67 billion for the financial year under review. He said that most ministries could not account for the huge sums of monies allocated to them while others gave unjustifiable reasons for spending the cash running into billions. “If you go to the reports, you can actually

make up your mind and see exactly what I am seeing for future amounts. Some recommendations we make are systemic but there are others that are made on individual ministries. These ones have to be determined by the PAC and action taken on the respective individuals,” he said. Meanwhile Gumbo has warned that officers who shall be found culpable will

Ruling on Moses Kuria bond pushed to Friday The determination of a case in which the DPP is seeking to have a bail term granted to Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria cancelled and the lawmaker sent to custody has again been pushed forward. Principal Magistrate Theresa Nyangena ordered the parties in the suit to return to court on Friday when she will rule of the application. Meanwhile Kuria has accused the DPP of being under pressure to have him prosecuted. He said the DPP is playing politics with the case in which he is accused of incitement. Through his lawyer Danson Mungatana, the MP claimed that there are “extraneous factors” compelling the DPP to make a request for his bond to be cancelled. The DPP has sought that the MP’s bond of Sh2 million be cancelled after he allegedly made remarks at a rally whether he was quoted to have told youth to attack people opposed the NYS projects with machetes. “He does not have a gang that he controls, if it was a boda boda person who had made those remarks there would have been no such drama,” the lawyer said in submission seeking to have the DPP’s request quashed. However in a rejoinder, Leornard Maingi for the DPP said there was likelihood that the MP may repeat similar remarks if not set into custody. “For the sake of public interest and safety, the bond that was granted should be cancelled,” Maingi said.

1.5 billion people cannot live without Facebook, study confirms Smartphone users spend roughly 46 minutes a day on Facebook, which happens to be one of the world’s leading social media platforms. Twenty per cent of the time people spend on their phones is committed to the app and its affiliated platforms, including WhatsApp. Facebook has 1.5 billion users across the globe, who cannot go a few days without accessing its services. Some experts have compared the trend to an compulsion, comparing users to drug addicts. The company has confirmed that

In fact, the firm’s earnings have jumped 40 per cent in the three months leading to the end of June.

Teachers threaten to strike in salary row

knut secretary general Wilson sossion.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has threatened to call for a nationwide strike should the government move to the Supreme Court to appeal against a salary increase awarded to them by the lower courts. KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion says the government has failed to honor a court ruling that granted teachers a 60 percent pay increase leaving the union with no option but to call for a nationwide teachers strike. “All teachers want to see in their salaries for this month is the 60 percent increase that was awarded by the court, anything less than that will result into an industrial action when schools re-open for the third term” Sossion said. The no-nonsense secretary general said the same government which is supposed to support teachers has turned its back and are now fighting them in the corridors of justice. He warned the government not to appeal the decision made by the Industrial Court that awarded teachers a pay increase saying such a move will paralyze learning when schools reopen for the third term in September.

“For how long will this government be in court over our pay? Our teachers cannot live in poverty forever, we won’t allow this. Somebody should tell the government they are making a mistake and they are playing with fire. They should not try to go to court. Justice delayed is justice denied,” he said. The Teachers Service Commission was ordered by the Court of Appeal to pay teachers the salary increase as awarded last month by the Employment and Labour Relations Court. TSC has instead argued that they have no money at the moment to implement the salary increase as ordered by the Court. According to Sossion, the only way the government can support teachers is to ensure that the rule given by the court is respected and government pays teachers in the month of August without delay. He added that the government had already served their lawyers with a notice of appeal at the highest court in the land. “Teachers would combine forces with their retired counterparts and fight the government together for their rights,” he said.

Head of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Archbishop Eliud Wabukala has urged the government to listen to the concerns raised by the Catholic Church over the ongoing polio vaccination. Speaking yesterday after a church service at All saints Cathedral, Wabukala said although the Anglican Church is not opposed to the vaccination, the concerns raised by the Catholics should not just be wished away. Wabukala said the church is only after protecting the health of Christians and the both the government and catholic doctors should argue based on scientific facts over the safety of the vaccination. “The contest between the government and the Church on the polio vaccine is not a matter of logic or philosophy, but a scientific fact. Doctors from both sides should go to laboratories and resolve the issue scientifically,” Wabukala said. “The government rather should not ignore the pleas of the Church as it is only after maintaining the good health of Christians,” Wabukala added. The controversial polio vaccination campaign enters day three today even as the Catholic Church maintained its opposition to the exercise over the safety of the vaccine. Wabukala’s sentiments over the vaccination comes as some health workers who turned up at various catholic churches were turned away. A group of health workers assigned to administer the polio vaccine at the Holy Family Basilica were yesterday was turned away by security personnel at the gate. “The church has health facilities that give its own vaccinations from time to time. We did not allow them in following a directive from the clergy,” said a security officer who sought anonymity.

Bailout plan by gov’t to KQ opposed till probe is done

LOSSES: KQ has received backlash from investors and stakeholders after posting worst results of fiscal year ended March 31.

The National Civil Society Congress have called on the government to cease pumping more money into Kenya Airways until a full probe inferences what is ailing the airline. Morris Odhiambo, the National Civil Society Congress, called on the concerned authority to show transparency to immediately disclose the problems at the airline. “If there are further cases of impropriety on the part of former and present managers, action must be taken immediately. It is very difficult to fight corruption where information flow is poor. Corruption thrives in the dark,” he said. Kenya Airways made a net loss of KSh25.74 billion ($274 million) for the 2014-15 financial year ended March 31, a deep dive from a KSh3.38 billion net loss in the year-ago period. However, the management attributed the loss to volatility of exchange rates, intense competition from Middle East carriers and terrorism that led to travel advisories. According to Odhiambo, the loss came closely after President Kenyatta questioned

a contract from provision of transport services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). He called upon the KQ management to be more accountable and transparency because Sh 25.7 billion is not a little amount and the impropriety at the airline could be bigger than expected. KQ Chief Executive Officer Mbuvi Ngunze, says the national airline is seeking Sh 20 billion from Afrexim Bank to refinance the business though the government had given Sh 4.2 billion as bailout plan. “The Sh 20 billion which we have not received yet, will both help in the in the operations going forward as well as try to service the few debts we have here and there. Afrexim have been our partner and I remember they also guided us in getting the Sh1.9billion for expansion a while back,” Ngunze said during an investors’ briefing on Thursday. Martin Odipo, a financial analyst told the senate probing Kenya Airways that the airline must change its model of operation for the bailout to be consequential.

Rural Electrification Authority to supply solar power to 33 schools The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) in partnership with water and energy solutions provider Davis and Shirtliff has completed a Sh58m project to install solar systems in 33 public schools. The project in Tana River and Lamu counties will see over 6,000 students in the two coastal counties gain access to electricity as the government moves to equip public primary schools across the country with laptops. The partnership comes as part of the ambitious National Primary School Electrification project initiated in 2013, whose overall aim is the integration of ICT in the curriculum delivery to expand digital skills, as enshrined in the government’s agenda, through connecting 21,158 public schools to electricity, according

to the Ministry of Energy. “We have installed the best-in-class solar equipment that will serve the schools for many years to come. The equipment comes with a warranty of 25 years and we will be maintaining it for a year to ensure that it is working at its optimum capacity,” said Norman Chege, the Solar Division Manager at Davis and Shirtliff. One of many similar undertakings geared towards implementing the government’s flagship laptops project, the installations in Tana River and Lamu counties targeted all primary schools that were more than five kilometers from the grid and could only be powered effectively through the use of solar modules.

Kenyan farmers milk the value chain from sorghum Sorghum is the most successful crop in adoption especially in the arid and semi-arid areas due to its resistant traits of surviving where ordinary crops fail. However, the Kenya Agricultural Livestock and Research Organization, KIRLO, is gaining from the crop through sorghum sausages, recording a success in growth and market for the crop.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Central Kenya and Rift Valley regions have fully embraced its cultivation since it requires a third of water compared to nonconventional crops. “New value addition enterprises have been coming up targeting sausages, including chicken and rabbit sausagesbecause we realized we have taught our farmers new

value addition enterprises like making fortified flours.’’ Said Alfred Oyunga, a scientist at KIRLO Kibos Center. Apart from providing farmers with high yielding and improved sorghum varieties, KIRLO is training farmers across the country in arid and semi-arid areas to venture in sorghum’s value addition.

Since sorghum is one of the key raw material in production of beer, the East African Breweries has partnered with KIRLO to provide a ready market at low prices. Consequently, sorghum remains are used as nutritious fodder while the sorghum fortified flour has been proven to boost body immunity among the sick. “We want the farmers to not just

learn to make the sausages for sale but for home consumption especially so that they can increase the nutrition of their families,” Oyunga said. He further noted that the present generation don’t like sorghum flour taste and felt to increase the portfolio of sorghum value added products to increase the market demand.

National carrier Kenya Airways emerged as this week’s top losing stock following the announcement of the airline’s full year earnings that showed a record loss of Sh25.7 billion in the year ending 31st March 2015. Despite having recorded a 3.9% increase in revenue over the period, increased competition, a costly fleet expansion initiative and losses related to fuel purchases plunged the airline further into losses. As a result, Kenya Airways’ share price plummeted -17.39 per cent during the week to close at a price of Sh5.70 from its previous week’s closing price of Sh6.90. An ailing tourism sector that has been suffering the effect of fewer visitor arrivals and a difficult operating environment has seen investor sentiment towards the counter remain negative. ho is Sarah Fanah? Sarah Fana is a gospel music minister, the KORA awards Good Will Ambassador for Eritrea, a psychologist, a motivational speaker and the CEO and executive producer at Zemare Production House How did you start out in music? I started singing at 7 years in a children’s choir. However I launched my music ministry in Kenya in 2013 with my first video Elshadai. How would you describe your sound? My sound can be described as Afro fusion as I take my Eritrean traditional tunes and fuse them with other sounds from other African countries which gives it a blend of Eritrean African fresh sound. Why did you delay to release your song Nitakuambia? I delayed it because so many of my Eritrean brothers and sisters drowned into the Mediterranean Sea as they were crossing to Europe and 30 of our Ethiopian brothers were brutally slaughtered by the ISIS in Libya. I had to stand with them during that hard time. Tell us about your new song Nitakuimbia is a song about my personal journey. I left home in search of a greener pasture in Kenya and went through a lot of challenges. I have seen death so many times in my short journey in this life but by the grace of God I am able to see a new day. So the song tells why I will keep on singing for the Lord. Where do you draw inspiration for your music? My inspiration and reason for my singing comes from God. However God inspires m e through his word and through the journey of my life.

Who are your music mentors? When it comes to worship songs and being real before God..Don Moen is my number1. But Zahara from South Africa inspires me to be creative. I also love Sinatch from Nigeria. Which artistes have you worked with and would you like to work with? I have worked with Kambua in her Umetenda Mema video way back before even starting my music career. I was also privileged to work with a group of fantastic artistes in the project we are one during the unfortunate West Gate attack. So far I can’t say I would want to work with anyone because God has to bring the right person for that. But in the future definitely I would want to work with some of the great ministers we have in Africa. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? Finding a producer who understands my sound was very hard. So many producers told me that it will be hard for me to make it in the Kenyan gospel ministry because I sing in a language people are not familiar with and giving it a new Eritrean sound would make it worse. But I knew my calling was never from a man but from God,so I courageously started it and here I am. Where will Sarah Fanah be in five years? In five years by the grace of God I would have walked half of my destiny road. Many people would know about the beautiful country Eritrea through my music and so many people would meet Jesus through my ministry.

‘He proposed in our sitting room. He came and asked me casually. I was surprised but happy’ —Julie.

‘When two become one’

The union of Julie and Kimathi O n a warm bright Saturday morning at Thomas Barnados, Julie Kageha Mbaja and Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri said their vows in front of family and friends. The two met in September of 2010 but Dedan confessed to XAccess that he had spotted Julie two years earlier in 2008 and she captured his heart. “We started dating in April 2011,” said a happy Julie, you see only women remember these dates! Kimathi proposed to Julie in May 2012. “He proposed in our sitting room. He came and asked me casually. I was surprised but happy,” says Julie. What made her say yes? “I loved him then and still do. His wisdom drew me in. Plus Kim is always himself, what you see is what you get, “said Julie. Kimathi decided to ask Julie to be his wife because, “what I love about Julie is that I can trust her come rain or shine,” he said. Kimathi knew Julie was the one for him because he felt at home and she is a good cook. Their wedding theme was a fusion of African and contemporary modern style. “We chose it because we live the mix of traditional and modern times,” says Julie. As Julie walked down the aisle towards her husband, Kim could not hide the joy of finally making her his before

man and God. Julie was in a white ball gown. The gown had lace appliques on the bodice and on the sleeves. She chose silver stilettos that glittered in the sun as foot wear. Swarovski jewelry completed her already very glitterati look. Julie looked amazing. Kimathi on the other hand was dressed in a silver three piece suit that fit his frame to the T. The bridesmaids were dressed in a lace and kitenge dress with wedges that had a kitenge touch while the men were in linen shirts, trousers with a kitenge feel and old school shoes. After the vows, the couple headed to the Boma hotel for their photoshoot. The guests were at Thomas Barnados having a great time eating and enjoying great music from a live band. When the couple finally arrived at the reception they were received by Isukuti dancers and their guests who by now were well fed. It was a party! There was dancing and laughter. Everybody was happy and content to celebrate Julie and Kimathi on their wedding day. After all the dancing came cake time. We must spare a moment here; their cake was made of assorted fruit and red velvet. My was it scrumptious! The day came to an end and the couple was happy to have

shared it with friends and family. “We would not change anything about how today went,” said Julie. The couple spent some Sh 750, 000 on their big day and they say it was worth every penny. They went to Dubai for their honeymoon and had a great time. “It is such a big relief to be married. We feel blessed and we thank God for everything. Our families and friends are very happy and respect us more,” said Julie. X Access wishes the couple a wonderful union.

MTV MAMA After Party hits Nairobi with a bang

A

fortnight after the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards rocked Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, an all-star line-up of MAMA winners and nominees brought the awesome MAMA vibe to Nairobi for MTV Base’s official MAMA After Party. Gates into the event were to officially open at 2100hrs but as early as 1900hrs local time, revelers thronged the Carnivore Simba Saloon in anticipation of a great night as this was the very first time the after party was setting foot in Nairobi. Hosted by MTV Base VJ Nomuzi Mabena, the MAMA after party officially kicked off with Kaka Empire’s King Kaka taking on the stage. His rendition serenading amidst the loud cheers from the crowd that then sang along to his Ligi soo, his caapella freestyle and Twende hit track clearly sending signals that the party people were in the mood for Diamond’s ‘bongo’ hits. Absolut Vodka’s ‘Transform Today’ ambassador Khuli Chana was next on stage just after midnight struck. His great rhyme skills wowed the crowd even though his rap is mostly

in his vernacular. The rhythmic beats characteristic of South African music kept the crowd on their feet for over twenty minutes before Khuli Chana paved way for the Kansoul trio. Theirs was a literal turnaround as they hit the stage with a lot of energy that saw partygoers dance to their Turnaround track. Their performance track was well coordinated with the Deejay soulfully putting together a series of hit tracks done by the Kanspoul as a group and creating lovely interludes with works from them as solo artistes. Mejja and Madtraxx being the crowd’s favorite, gave it their all in a performance that lasted well over forty five minutes as MTV MAMA 2015 ‘Best Live Act’ winner Diamond Platnumz prepared to get on stage. Clad in his signature all white, the Tanzanian superstar hit the stage kicking off his performance with a lovely delivery of Nataka kulewa. The revelers clearly drunk, sang along as they cheered him on. Incredibly, Diamond’s energy on stage was evident as his dancers also clad in white, joined him. The well-coordinated dance moves saw the ‘Best Live Act’ winner

perform eleven of his hit tracks that included Ukimwona, Nimpende nani, Mawazo, Kesho, Nitampata wapi, Number one the remix featuring Davido, Nasema Nawe, wao and Nana that he featured Mr.Flavour in. Diamond occasionally stopped to thank his fans for the overwhelming love and great reception. His performance like in the past was awesome. Just when the revelers thought it was all over as Diamond was the official Headline performer, history was made at the Carnivore samba saloon. Kenya’s MTV MAMA 2015 ‘Best Group’ nominees Sauti Sol teased the crowd from back stage and finally emerged as screams and cheers filled the atmosphere. Having performed for POTUS a week ago, the all boy band’s status seemed to have risen. Many expected Diamond to be the final act but Sauti Sol stole the show with a live band performance backed up by a track only from the Deejay. They brilliantly outdid themselves in what most people at the event described as a world class

DiaMonD performance. Their hit songs Nerea and Sura yako w e r e the highlight of the night as the ‘lipala’ dance took c e n t r e stage. Even as Sauti Sol left the stage, the action was not over yet. Rounding out the evening with some hot deck action were DJs Jimmy Jatt, DJ C’ndo, DJ Crème Dela Crème & DJ Pierra Makena who ensured the party went on and on till dawn.

‘THE EVENT’ wakes up cold Karen U

sually, the suburb of Karen is a quiet area with almost no movement on the roads. This, however, was not the case on Saturday as Pop Signs Media took the party to Belevie House in Karen. Although locating the venue that is neatly hidden away deep inside Karen was a tussle, the mood there

was enough to make one forget their frustration and lighten up on arrival. With the MC Obinna Ike Igwee, famous for his effortless ability to get even the dullest audience back to life and up on their feet, the attendees of the event spent the afternoon dancing to local and international music, with the main act being the mellow voiced

Samawati Band. Apart from dancing, shisha lovers had the chance to indulge themselves in the decorated pastime at the shisha tent, with the more conservative guests having bites and refreshments at the adjacent food tent. For a first event this was a surprise for Karen!

Diamond Platnumz is truly setting the standards in East Africa. The superstar on landing in Kenya was on his electric skates cruising as he made his way to the waiting limousine. The self-balancing electric skates synonymous to those used by world super stars such as Chris Brown are said to cost up to USD10, 000. The superstar is said to have acquired the skates to set the bar high when it came to celebrities in the East African region.

DIAMOND RAISES SHOWBIZZ BUZZ WITH SKATES

Juliani treet parties are not a common sight in Nairobi but we mostly know they are associated with Juliani Those attending the second meetup got a free ride to the venue on the hottest matatus in Nairobi, ‘Dust’ and ‘Mapepe’, where they infected the streets on Nairobi with the party mood, attracting even more people to the venue. The fun activities included performance by Fundamentals singer Ken Wa Maria and Super

Mazembe. With the Godown being a centre for arts, those talented in the arts had a chance to showcase their skills in art activities such as spray paint graffiti. But alas after many hours of anticipation it was evident that Juliani, one of the expected performers was a no show. This dampened the spirits of his diehard fans who later told XAccess’ they should have just promoted the vent without him”

All roads led to the Carnivore Simba saloon this past weekend for the MTV MAMA 2015 after party. As is tradition, there was the VVIP sections and guess who was there, we would say all Kenyan celebrities. From comedians, actors and actresses, dancers, singers and rappers, radio and TV hosts to news personalities. The Kenyan celebrities

though not performing, had a lot of fun dancing and mingling. Notable faces at the event included Jicho Pevu’s Mohammed Ali, rarely seen in public Redsan, Nonini, Suzanna Owiyo, Vivian, Jaguar, Kristoff and Khaligraph among others. Comedians Jalango, Owago Onyiro, Obinna and David the student also graced the event.

YOURSAY Understanding the folly and the elaborate mess of clinging to power by African Presidents Power is invariably sweet. It confers dignity and self-respect. However, the rewards of power too, have their term. They harbor limitations that I would want to detail the folly of sticking to power by African Presidents as US President intimated

at the AU meeting in Ethiopia. Like any other success, power is insatiable, a fact that escapes these leaders’ notice. They make power their chief ambition and consequently fail because lust cannot be wholly satisfied. Besides, these are

There are plenty of lessons the world can draw from the recent Ebola crisis The recent Ebola epidemic is likely the canary in the coalmine. Rapid globalisation, urbanisation and climate change create fertile ground for infectious diseases that will continue to hit the poorest the hardest. In the last two decades, 30 new diseases have jumped from animals to humans. Health experts estimate that an influenza epidemic could prove 8,000 times more deadly than this Ebola outbreak. The recent resurgence of measles in the United States shows that even one weak link in a strong health system can put any nation at risk.

Prioritising health systems from the getgo could have saved billions of dollars and countless lives — not just in West Africa during the Ebola crisis, but anywhere with a weak health system. What’s more, in times of relative calm, investments in health systems boost economies and strengthen social cohesion, yielding a resilience dividend. With crisis becoming the new normal, governments must recognize resilient health systems as an investment, not a cost. —Judith Rodin, New York

GSU officers are a pack of degenerate thugs General Service Unit officers have no chill! These officers have a habit of beating people unconscious and it has got to stop! I sincerely hope that the government stops recruiting ignorant illiterate and violent people into the GSU. We can’t live like this! Kenya is one of the few countries across the world where an unarmed suspect will never fight back. In fact, people are more likely to run than pick a fight with an officer holding a gun.

The GSU needs to vet its recruits and only pick rational, reasonable people from their stock of applicants. No one wants trigger-happy madmen running around with batons, beating people because they happened to be having a bad day. The GSU seriously needs a guidebook on how to handle suspected criminals and by-standing civilians. They must be held accountable for their actions. —Dennis L., Nairobi

South Sudan becomes 206th member of IOC

ALL RIGHT: South Sudan’s president of the National Olympic Committee Wilson Deng Kuoirot, right, accepts the IOC certificate for Olympic recognition on Sunday.

The International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, on Sunday announced South Sudan as the newest country to join OIC. This followed a unanimous vote by the global sporting body’s members. Bach said: “On behalf of all the IOC members and the Olympic movement, I would like to officially welcome the newest member of our Olympic family, the National Olympic Committee of South Sudan. “Congratulations on becoming our 206th member.” Bach thanked the Sudanese National Olympic Committee, which played a key role in helping its South Sudanese neighbour get the IOC recognition. He said: “It demonstrates what autonomy of

sports from politics really means, because in spite of the political dispute between Sudan and South Sudan, you have worked together. “We look forward to welcoming you to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where for the first time in your history, you will march behind your national flag. “This will put your nation on the world map.” South Sudan, with a population of over eight million people, split from Sudan and became independent in 2011. But in December 2013, a political power struggle broke up between its two most powerful leaders, plunging the young country into civil war, displacing over two million people.

Arsenal finally break Mourinho hoodoo

Gunners pip Blues 1-0 at Wembley to lift Cummunity Shield

A

rsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his players overcame a big psychological hurdle by beating Chelsea in Sunday’s Community Shield. The Gunners had not beaten a Blues side managed by Jose Mourinho in 13 previous attempts. But Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal secured a 1-0 win against the Premier League champions at Wembley. “It was important for the team to get that hurdle out of the way,” said Wenger. “For me? No, because it is Arsenal versus Chelsea, it is not the two managers. It is two teams who play against each other.”

Chelsea dominated possession but did not create many clear-cut chances. The Blues had more shots on goal than Arsenal but just two were on target - an Oscar free kick and a Kurt Zouma header. Mourinho felt his team played the better football. “The best team lost. And the defensive team won,” he said. “If you want to be pragmatic, like I normally am, I say in a simple way, they score, they didn’t concede. Well done. Congratulations. “Other clubs, other managers you say are boring, that they park the bus, I don’t agree with that. I say they were very well organised and because of that I give total credit.”

The relationship between Wenger and Mourinho has often been spiky. In February last year, Mourinho claimed Wenger was ‘a specialist in failure’ while the Arsenal boss has previously accused his Chelsea counterpart of being “disrespectful”. After Arsenal’s win on Sunday, Mourinho shook hands with the Arsenal players after they had collected the shield but missed Wenger when the Frenchman walked behind him. Wenger said: “I shook a few hands after the game, but there’s nothing special there. I believe in a job where you have to respect people and respect everybody.”
