Profile of Murang’a County

M

urang’a County is believed to be the cultural cradle of the Kikuyus.

L y i n g approximately 85 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, the county covers 2,558 square kilometers.

The current day Murang’a was once known as Forthall .

Murang’a County borders Nyandarua to the west, Embu to the east, Nyeri to the north, Kiambu to the south and Machakos and Kirinyaga counties to the southeast and the northeast respectively.

The origin of the name Murang’a is believed to have been used by the Kikuyu people who referred to going for a visit in the area as ‘Kurang’a ‘and later changed to Murang’a.

Murang’a County Government Murang’a County constitutes seven constituencies; Gatanga, Kandara, Kangema, Kigumo, Kiharu, Maragua and Mathioya.

The governance in the county is under Governor Mwangi wa Iria, James Kembi Gitura (Senator), Sabina Wanjiru Chege, (Women Representative) and Kula Hache (County commissioner).

942,581 (male - 48% and female - 52%) according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 2009 National Census report.

The larger majority of locals are Kikuyus who are born here. Most of them engage in mixed farming for staple food which includes maize, beans, cabbages, sorghum, millet and cassava among others.

The county has a small percentage of people from other communities including Kamba, Meru, Embu, Luhya and Indians who are primarily involved in running small to medium-size trade businesses in major towns of the county.

Economic Activities The backbone of Murang’a County’s economy is deeply rooted in agriculture . The residents also engage in small scale farming and livestock keeping . Agriculture is practiced on small family land holding. Over 60 percent of small scale farmers grow cash crops tea and coffee. Six tea factories serve most of the farmers; Githambo, Gatunguru, Kanyenya-ini and Kiru.

Coffee factories in the area include Kanyenyaini, Mihuti and Gathima, Kiharu coffee factories among others.

Other agricultural activities that support the county‘s economy include Macadamia farming.

Among main farms for Macadamia is Farmnut Macadamia in Murang’a and Maragua town.

Dairy farming is popular in the county with milk processing plants spread across various towns.

You will find Kenya Cooperative Creameries and Mountain Fresh milk plants in Kangema.

Murang’a Quarries is the main source of building materials

especially bricks and building stones. There are also sand quarries on the border of Murang’a and Machakos that are a source of income for local residents.

Health Facilities Murang’a County has about 271 health facilities which include 112 centers run by government, 125 that are privately owned and 31 run by faith based organizations. A few centers are managed by community based organizations.

Among the government-managed is Murang’a District Hospital in Murang’a Town, Maragua District Hospital, Kangema and Muriranjas Sub-District Hospitals. Churchrun health facilities include Kiriaini Mission and Githumu Hospital.

Private hospitals include the Kangari Dental Clinic and Marie Stopes Nursing Home at Mbiiri among others.

Education There are 739 primary schools and 271 secondary schools both public and private. Some of the top high schools in Murang’a County include Kahuhia Girls Secondary School, Mugoiri Girls High School, Kahuhia Girls High School and Njiiris Boys Secondary School. Murang’a County hosts several renowned colleges among them Murang’a Teacher’s College, Murang’a Technical Institute and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) — Murang’a.

Other top colleges include Michuki Technical Training Institute, Murang’a University College and Mbiiri Institute of Professional Studies. There’s also a Kenya National Library Service in Murang’a town. prominent persons Attractions and Places of Interest

Visitors to the county can enjoy several attractions. The respected Mukurwe Wa Nyagathanga shrine believed to be the home of kikuyu ancestors (Gikuyu and his wife Mumbi) is worth a visit.

Rapids Camp Sagana on the border of Murang’a and Nyeri County at Sagana is also a breathtaking camping and white water rafting attraction for foreign and local tourists.

Murang’a County borders Aberdare National Park and Forest to the east.

This is an ideal site for camping hiking and bird watching.

The county also hosts the prestigious Ndaka-ini half marathon. There’s also Ndaka-ini dam where all the water supply to Kenya’s capital Nairobi, comes from.

MPs want more time to pass Bills Members of Parliament are now seeking to extend by three months the constitutional deadline for enacting key Bills.

The MPs have a deadline of August 27, 2015 to enact some four constitutional Bills, failure to which the House risks being petitioned.

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale admits that MPs will not be able to meet the August 27 timeline even after the Attorney General Githu Muigai sent nine Bills to the House for publishing.

The decision to seek the threemonth extension was arrived at after the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee wrote to the House leadership expressing

concern that the Cabinet, Attorney General and Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution had delayed in transmitting the Bills.

“Submission of this and other bills with constitutional timelines will be very difficult to meet the set deadlines, as such the House Business Committee has agreed to prioritise a motion seeking the extension of the constitutional timelines of August 27, 2015,” he said.

Appearing before parliament’s constitutional Implementation Oversight committee on Tuesday, Chairman of the Constitution Implementation Commission

Charles Nyachae said CIC has already approved all the nine pending Constitutional Bills, which must be passed by 27th of this month.

Parliament risk being dissolved should the legislators fail to meet the constitutional deadline if one goes to court prompting the call of extension by the majority leader.

The legislators blamed key institutions such as the Constitutional Implementation Commission, Office of the Attorney General and the Kenya Law Reforms for failing to present the necessary bills in time yet they expect the house to meet the deadline.

Kenya now suspends deal with cnn over terror report The government has now suspended its Sh10 billion advertising campaign with US broadcaster CNN following last month’s report in which Kenya was portrayed as a terror hotbed.

Tourism board today confirmed the suspension of

the deal.

Kuria fails to blocK DPP’s move to cancel bail, now faces jail Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria today lost his bid to block the Director of Public Prosecution’s application to have his bail cancelled over continued hate speech.

Principal Magistrate Theresa Nyangena dismissed his preliminary objection to the request on the grounds that Kuria’s objections were based on facts contained in the DPP’s application, which she was yet to hear.

She cautioned the parties against further wasting the court’s time and directed that they make their responses and submissions in the shortest possible time, to allow her make an informed determination when all the facts were before her.

She will therefore hear the DPP’s application on August

19 and made it clear that the proceedings will be held in public.

Kuria had sought to have the media barred from the proceedings; accusing them of having judged and executed him in the court of public opinion.

The DPP moved to get Kuria’s bond cancelled in a hate speech case he is facing over his Facebook posts after he allegedly publicly called for the assault of those opposed to National Youth Service projects.

This followed the burning of a public toilet, an NYS initiative, in Kibera by youths after Opposition leader Raila Odinga called for the suspension of Ministry of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru,

in whose docket NYS falls, over suspicious IFMIS transactions.

The NYS statements the DPP argues, violated the terms of Kuria’s release on bond in the Facebook hate speech case.

Kuria has however objected to the DPPs application, arguing that his release on bond is a constitutional right; a right the DPP has countered is not absolute.

Kuria says the DPP is also relying on information that has been edited to paint him in bad light and that he did not actually say what he has been accused of saying.

He says the fact that he is yet to be arrested and charged over inciting statements he is alleged to have made in relation to the NYS is proof of his assertions.

Arrest wArrAnts issued for lAwyers in city cemetery scAm The Anti-Corruption Court has issued a warrant of arrest against two senior advocates charged over a cemetery scandal in which the Nairobi City Council (NCC) lost Sh283 million.

Senior Principal Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi on Thursday ordered the arrest of Alphonce Mutinda and Joseph Kojwado after they failed to appear in court for the hearing.

Mugambi said the report did not explain the ailment the accused was suffering from. The court directed that the case be heard on 29 and 30

October 2015. The fraud case has stagnated for the last five years.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the suspects mainly from the NCC and the Local Government Ministry face several corruption charges that are linked to the scandal.

In a report, the EACC explained that public funds were used to buy a 120-acre plot in Mavoko Township which cost Sh283 million, a price EACC said was far above the fair market value of land in a similar location.

“The investigation established a well-orchestrated fraud in which NCC was misled by its officers in collusion with others into buying a parcel of land unsuitable for the purpose for which it was intended,” the report by the commission said.

The real price is said to have been Sh24 million and the balance was distributed to 17 recipients, among them middlemen, civil servants, and lawyers.

Those charged with the fraud include John Gakuo, the former Nairobi Town Clerk, Mary Ngethe, the director of Legal Affairs and two

business persons Maina Chege and Mercy Kinyanjui.

The list also has lawyers Paul Onduso and Davies Odero Osiemo, a former PS William Mayaka, the Chief Finance Officer at the Ministry of Local Government Herman Chavera and Boniface Misera.

Former President Mwai Kibaki had ordered for the suspension of 13 officials in the Local Government and Finance ministries in the scandal.

The now defunct Nairobi City Council blamed the scandal on lack of proper planning in management of the council affairs.

Kidero seeks to block SGR payout to Embakasi ‘squatters’ The Nairobi County Government has moved to court to stop the payment of Sh2.5 billion as compensation to residents of Embakasi claiming ownership of land earmarked for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

In papers filed at the High Court yesterday, the county government argues that those living in the land are squatters without any title deeds and that the land belongs to the City Council.

Through lawyer Titus Koceyo, the county government has sued the National Land Commission, Kenya Railways Corporation, the Chief Land Registrar and Attorney General, all of whom are accused of unprocedurally laying claim to the parcel.

They say the land was inherited from the defunct City Council and as such, is a property of the county government. City hall claims that it was not involved by the Mohamed Swazuri led commission on the said

land. It has further accused those listed to be compensated of grabbing the land from the defunct City Council in the 90’s.This is just but a recent hindrance to the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway which has had oppositions from time to time and at various stages.

Just recently conservationists threatened to move to court to oppose the plan to have the railway pass through Nairobi National Park.

The conservationists argue that the idea to pass it through the park will have an effect to the wildlife. Conservationists are worried about the encroachment on one of the region’s few national parks located within a capital city.

Central Bank of Kenya Governor Patrick Njoroge has opposed a Treasury proposal to raise banks’ core capital to Sh5 billion within the next three years, saying this will increase the dominance of the big players and lead to consolidation of the smaller banks.

According to Njoroge, having more capital would strengthen banking institutions and enable them to take up more projects to minimize the risk to the general public.

“If you look at the 42 banks, there are those that have a lot of capital but the way we want to deal with it is through a risk weighted approach meaning they

must have capital that is commensurate with the risk they have,” he said.

However, Njoroge called for a stay to implement the proposal by National Treasury CS Henry Rotich to allow further consultations with stakeholders because issuing of blanket amount on all banks may not match the risk of its core capital. “If we imposed a minimum it will force consolidation of banks and the small ones will be gobbled up by the bigger banks – the large banks are not necessarily playing the best, their business models would be dominant and we may end up reversing the financial inclusion we have been talking about,” he

added. He further said, entrepreneurship needs to be natured whereas smaller banks needs to be allowed to grow if Kenya wants to become the center of business in Africa. According to him, allowing smaller banks to thrive would definitely tame bigger banks as they would offer competition saying in 2012 the CBK asked other banks to increase capital by 2 per cent which they had already achieved. “You can imagine the size of those banks, this is frightening even for us as regulators. But you have the assurance as the regulator of the banking sector that we will apply the rules in an even handed fashion and

improve the regulation framework so that we have smart regulation,” he went on to state. Since the core capital was increased to Sh 1 billion in 2012 from Sh 250 million in 2008, the CBK Governor was urged to develop a serious agenda to address the issue of interest rates which have highly impacted on the cost of business hence lowering the value of the shilling.

“I want to work with the commercial banks until they deliver on these issues; we are more focused on these issues today more than five years ago,” assured Njoroge.

I started as a kid so I will start by saying my first challenge was managing my time for music, school and other things in life.

ho is Bilari?

The new rapper in town making hits and killing beats. He is also a student from USIU living in Buruburu Estate.

Briefly tell us how your journey in music started.

I started music when I was in high school. Actually my first solo project got me nominated for the CHAGUO LA TEENIZ AWARDS. After that I was sure I had it in me.

I then joined K-Force crew. After it broke up I came up with my own crew WEUSI FAMILIA which also had to be dissolved. Right now I am working on solo projects.

How would you describe your sound?

I can say it is “Music straight from my heart to your soul.” It is good music to your ear and soul but that is up to the fans to tell me what they think.

Tell us about your latest single Asante Mola and the inspiration

behind it.

Asante Mola is a thank you message to God. He has seen me through a lot and has never let me fade away. It was easy to do it because I really felt like saying THANK YOU GOD. Where do you get inspiration for your music?

I am always so sincere .When I do my music I look at the situation I am in and the people around me and try to paint the picture with melodious words.

Who do you look up to in the music industry?

Internationally I look up to Ludacris. Locally, Juliani is doing it big for me.

Which artistes have you worked with and which ones would you like to work with?

I’ve worked with a lot of great artistes. The late Bobby Slic, Mejja, MadTraxx, Bamboo, Big Pin, Gaza, Jiwiji of Mashifta just

to name a few. I would be super humbled to work with Sauti Sol, Juliani , Wizkid and Sarkodie.

What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out?

I started as a kid so I will start by saying my first challenge was managing my time for music, school and other things in life. The next thing that has been a challenge is managing music by myself, I am still learning.

Highlights of your career?

Performing at The Rift Valley Festival was a great experience for me, I met many inspiring people and I had a lot of fun.

What more should fans expect from you?

Nothing but the best music ever coming from home.

Al Sisi unveils New Suez Canal, to boost Egyptian economy during tough times In July, 1956 Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, yesterday, her incumbent President, Abdel Fattah Al Sisi officially inaugurated the New Suez Canal The expansion of the existing shipping lane, along with the opening of the new lane, further cements the Suez Canal as one of the most important and valuable canals in the world.

Following 12 months of the construction processes, the new waterway now allows for simultaneous Northern and Southern vessel transit for the first time in its history. Expansion of the canal raised $8.5 billion within six days in its first round of funding.

According to business analysts, it is estimated the canal will gather revenues of KSh 124.5 billion (US$12.3bn)

annually by 2023, more than doubling the canal’s current revenue intake.

The project, which President Al Sisi said he hopes the canal will become a symbol of the new Egypt; a gift from the nation to the world, and a demonstration of the determination and commitment of the Egyptian people.

The new canal, built parallel to the existing Suez Canal, will see a near 50 percent increase in vessel traffic by 2023, taking the daily transit volume from 49 to 97. Moreover, transit time for southbound vessels will be reduced by up to eight hours in total.

More than 242 million cubic meters of soil were dredged during the construction phase, resulting in a new canal stretching 35km in length and dropping to a depth

of 24 meters. “This is a proud day, not only for the Suez Canal Authority and President El-Sisi, but also for the entire Egyptian population, which has striven to achieve the near-impossible in order to make this dream become a reality,” said Admiral Mohab Mameesh, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority.

“Today, as we unveil this gift to the world, we present a new Egypt; a more prosperous and positive Egypt. And in doing so, we place the Suez Canal at the pinnacle of the shipping industry.”

The New Suez Canal has already welcomed a number of vessels during trial periods spanning the last two weeks, but the Suez Canal Authority expects business to grow exponentially following the official launch yesterday.

Embu coopErativE group turns farmErs into nEt suppliErs A farmer led cooperative group has assisted its 330 members to double earnings while pointing them to rich and consistent markets in just two years at the time when majority of farmers had resigned farming due to exploitation from rogue traders and poor infrastructure.

Farmers who grew cow-peas, sorghum and green grams were being exploited by rogue traders who pitched tents in the region prior to school opening forcing farmers to sell their produce at a poultry price to meet schools fees and other demands. Thanks to Mbeere Mwangaza Farmers’ Cooperative Society limited which has been able to negotiate for better market prices through combined selling model and cutting down on the expenses enabling farmers reach prime markets.

This in turn has doubled the price since green grams have moved from Sh 60 to Sh 120 while cow peas climbed to Sh 100 from Sh 20 a kilo respectively, a market they

never dreamed of as selling sorghum to middlemen would claim no markets justifying they sold it at low prices. Philip Kioko, the group secretary says, the cooperative uses donkey carts to collect farmers produce and bring them at a central position to counter the menace of poor infrastructure.

“Our farmers are staggered in different areas which are far apart. We need to give them the motivation that they can concentrate on producing their produce and leave the burden of collecting the produce to us. That way farmers no longer have to worry about rough terrain,” he said.

But since the group has not yet invested in modern machine, other post-harvest practices like sorting and grading are done by farmers whereas sealing of the final product for market is done by candles earning farmers up to 80 per cent upon delivery as the remaining amount caters for administration costs.

Volleyball federation to align local calendar with FIVB’s 2016/2017 Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) season will serve off in September and not January, as has been the case in the previous years, X-Sport can authoritatively report.

The new development is meant to align the KVF Calendar, which runs from January to December with that of International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), which runs from September to May. Next season (2016) will be the shortest and is expected to run from January to May to pave way for the new calendar in September according to sources privy to the discussion at KVF secretariat.

The recommendation is expected to be

passed during the executive meeting to be held later this year. This is in efforts to end the ever-thorny issue of Kenyan players getting into problems with FIVB/CAVB in processing the transfer Certificates whenever they want to turn up for professional stints abroad.

Early this year, CAVB wrote to KVF warning of dire consequences (including a fine and a ban) when they learnt that Mercy Moim who played for Finish side Liga Ploski last season (until May) was entered by Kenya Prisons to play the Africa Club Championship. merican Floyd Mayweather has defended picking Andre Berto as his opponent in what could be his last ever fight.

The unbeaten champion, 38, faces fellow countryman Berto in Las Vegas on 12 September, and could extend his winning run to 49 fights.

Berto, 31, a former world champion, was a surprise choice given his fall down boxing’s pecking order in recent years.

However, Mayweather noted: “I chose Berto because he’s very exciting.”

Murang’a County Creameries (MCC)

M

urang’a County Creameries is an umbrella cooperative for all Murang’a Dairy farmers.

The membership is comprised of farmers groups in the dairy sector. Its key role is to consolidate and market milk and milk products for Murang’a farmers. The

leadership of MCC is from across the county in the over 30 Dairy Co-operatives. It manages all the 35 milk coolers supplied to dairy co-operatives by the county government.

The county government is a key stakeholder in the cooperative and it guides and helps in Policy development and governance.

Roles of Murang’a County Creameries

• Facilitates milk collection from dairy Co-operatives • Manage the 35 milk coolers • Market the milk and milk products • Ensures value to farmers • Manages breeding by providing quality A.I. services.

• Provides quality fodder to the farmers.

FIGHTING IllICIT bREWS AND DRUG AbUSE

MBUGITI DAIRY MILK COOLING PLANT LAUNCH The cooler has a storage capacity of 5000 Litres and falls under the Murang’a County Creameries (MCC); an umbrella cooperative movement for dairy farmers in Murang’a County constituted by 38 dairy SACCOS.Its worth some noting that since the institution of MCC Farmers are fetching higher returns with a liter of milk going

for Ksh. 35 up from a mere Ksh.18 a few months ago. For the month of June a total of 50Million shillings was paid out to MCC farmers. The prices are expected to escalate higher upon the completion of the MCC milk processing factory whose construction is ongoing at Maragua Town. The factory will also be manufacturing quality animal feeds that will be sold

at a subsidized, reasonable and farmer friendly prices.

The milk cooling and milk processing factory project is part of a expansive dairy farming package aimed at revolutionizing this genre of agriculture. Improving Dairy farming as a crucial pillar of Murang’a economy significantly aids the uplifting of living standards for the people of Murang’a.G

The ‘Murang’a Child Can’ mentorship program was officially launched by H.E the Governor Mwangi wa iria on 6th August 2013 seen as an initiative to improve on the education standards in the county.

The County Government and NYS have partnered on the rehabilitation of alcoholics drive by engaging the rehabilitated patients in gainful ventures.

This is in efforts to fight alcoholism in the county and engage the youths in meaningful projects.
