MPs pressure ODM over Ruto ICC case F

our MPs from Western region now want the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to come out and intervene in the case against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang at the International Criminal Court. The legislators said the Orange party leadership is better placed

to tell the ICC the truth about the 2007/8 post-election violence. The MPs Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo), Bernard Shinali (Ikolomani), Malulu Injendi (Malava) and Benjamin Washiali (Mumias East) say Ruto was in ODM at the time and the party should not abandon him. “Leaders who were in ODM are well placed to tell ICC that Ruto

and Sang are innocent people who should be vindicated, said Wangwe. The leaders said ODM was well placed to inform the court that Kenyans spontaneously went to the streets to protest what they believed was a stolen election and no violence had been planned. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Strike enters third week as parties remain in standoff MONDAY, SEPTEMBER14, 2015

HEADING HOME: Students of Upper Hill secondary school walk on Nairobi streets after their school was closed following the ongoing teachers strike.

The nationwide teachers strike entered its third week Monday even as the stalemate between the government and unions over the 50 to 60 percent pay increase awarded by the courts continues. Speaking during the Capital in The Morning show, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion indicated that the union will protect the rights of teachers even if it involves being in serious conflict with the government. Sossion pointed out that the government, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, need to respect the ruling of the court on the pay increase saying ignoring it is a threat to the country’s entire work force. “We’ll protect our rights even if it means bringing the country to its knees. This threat to the court ruling is a threat to the entire work force. In a society that is just, even the President respects the ruling of the court,” he stated. He further encouraged teachers to maintain their stance and not to be cowed by sack threats. “The country is operating a budget of Sh2.2 trillion. What is it that teachers have been granted by the courts? 50 to 60 percent offer for one phase

which is conditional. The arrears and allowances have been stayed for further hearings in the court. What teachers deserve to be awarded is only Sh1.3 billion per month,” he said. He said of this amount, Sh900mn will go directly to teachers while Sh400mn will go to taxes. While claiming that the President was being misadvised on the availability of funds, Sossion urged the Teachers Service Commission and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to be sincere in stating the facts on teachers’ pay. “It is too late in the day to advance any argument and to cheat the executive. This is a tragedy that government advisors and technocrats are cheating the executive. Once you cheat the executive to make statements that are against the rule of law, then indeed, you are creating a banana republic. Indeed, these are court orders,” he stated. He further maintained that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission does not determine the salaries of teachers since they are not listed as State officers. “The buck stops with the government and if it could engage us meaningfully

and very well and we sign Collective Bargaining Agreements, we have no interest in this. But look at the belligerence of the government and the way they are taking us. Even if you look at the matter of the court, they are the ones who took us to court instead of engaging us at the social table,” he said. “The government is engaging in mischief and the grand talk of the wage bill being so huge that it is going to compromise development is nonsense. Development of the human resource is bigger development than development of all other forms of infrastructure. This is where the rubber meets the road and we are not going to give in,” he added. On Sunday, the union stated that it’s not discouraged by recent remarks by President Kenyatta that his government will not honour the pay award. Speaking after the KNUT National Executive Council meeting, Chairman Mudzo Nzili said teachers will push on with the strike.

It is upon leaders allied to ODM to come out and speak about what they know and what they saw because they understand well what happened,” added Wangwe. They said they are in solidarity with their colleagues in other parts of the country in praying for the cases facing Ruto and the journalist. “Our brothers are innocent and we are optimistic that the cases facing them will soon collapse because there is no evidence linking them to the 2007/08 post-election

violence,” said Washiali. Speaking at St. Mathews Munganga ACK, Mumias in Kakamega county during a Sunday sermon attended by Ruto, the leaders urged ICC prosecutor and the judges to act professionally. They said the recent development at The Hague based court showed that politics were taking a centrestage. Their remarks came even as Jubillee MPs called for the investigations into the way the ICC has handled the Kenyan cases. Speaking at a prayer rally at

Back in Mumias, Bishop Beneah Salala of ACK’s local Diocese urged Kenyans to continue praying for the Deputy President and the journalist Joshua Sang. “We should unite as a nation and pray for the collapse of the cases facing our brothers at the ICC,” said Bishop Salala. Ruto who was himself present at the service steered clear of the ICC issues and instead assured the faithful that the government would serve all Kenyans equally. He said it is the responsibility of the government to serve all

Men spend a year of their lives staring at women, reveals study A man will, on average, spend a year of his life staring at women a study from for Kodak Lens Vision Centres has discovered. It has been revealed that the average man will spend almost 43 minutes a day staring at women. Meanwhile, women spend half as much time staring at men. According to Kodak Lens Vision Centres spokesman, Mark Ireland who headed the study, that adds up to roughly 11 days a year of ogling. This, in turn, accounts for a total 11 months and 11 days for those who get to live

anywhere between the ages of 18 and 50. Women, on the other hand, stare at men for a little over 20 minutes a day (or 6 months) from the time they turn 18 to the time they turn 50, the report, which was published in the Telegraph, has shown. The poll, which studied thousands of people from different cultural, social and economic backgrounds, also found that supermarkets, bars, workplaces and night clubs were the locations that people were most likely to stare at potential partners.

Two die in suspected suicides in Nairobi Police are investigating two separate cases of suicide that reported in Nairobi. The first incident happened in Kamukunji where the body of a man was found in his room in what appeared to have been a case of suicide. Neighbours said the man who stayed alone is suspected to have hanged himself using a rope. His body was later picked up by police and taken to the mortuary. The second incident happened in Ruai where another man was found dead in his house after quarrelling with his wife over. Police said they are investigating both the incidents.

EACC urged to probe county graft claims Two independent offices have asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate corruption allegations at the county governments. Both the Auditor General and the Commission for Revenue Allocation (CRA) offices contend that there is widespread corruption at the devolve units and now want action taken to address the matter. “We must be careful about cases of corruption at the county level being exposed by the media, EACC and my office should co-ordinate to ensure such issues are addressed,” said Auditor General Edward Ouko. CRA chairman Micah Cheserem claimed corruption has been devolved, posing great threat to devolution. “Look at the issues of wheelbarrows and gates we saw on the media the other day

with colossal amount of money being spent, I am not saying the respective governors are guilty but something is definitely wrong,” he said. “It’s sad that corruption has been devolved, look at the supremacy wars between County Assemblies and the Executive, senators and Governors and the National Assembly and the Senate, all these boil down to control of money,” added Cheserem. The two were speaking today morning on Citizen TV where they were discussing the performance of independent constitutional bodies. He said Auditor General’s report released in July should only be used to improve governance and prudent use of resources allocated to both National and county government. The CRA chairman said the recent attacks on the Auditor General by some politicians

who claimed the report was politically instigated were unwarranted. “We must respect the work of independent offices. When queries are raised by the Auditor General it is not always in bad faith or with ulterior motive. We must learn to use our resources prudently,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that the Auditor General report was never taken seriously but brushed as political gimmick,” he added. The Auditor-General in July this year released reports exposing ruthless expenditure of devolved resources in the county and National governments where up to Sh67 billion could not be accounted for. Jubilee legislators however dismissed the report claiming the Auditor General was being used by the Opposition to paint the government as corrupt.

A man fell and died from a building under construction in Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate. Police said the victim was with his colleagues at the site when he slid from the fourth floor and fell dying on the spot. His colleagues reported the incident police who took the body to the mortuary. Elsewhere, police are investigating an incident in which some Ridgeways High School students went on the rampage last night and damaged property. The students destroyed property of unknown value as they fought for unclear reasons before police arrived to quell the situation.

NEWS BRIEFS Ending Syria crisis key to migrant crisis, says US General Ending the conflict in Syria and Iraq is key to solving the migrant crisis facing Europe, a senior US official has said. Gen John Allen, special presidential envoy for the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) group today told the BBC that IS had to be defeated and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “had to go”. He said it was “heartwrenching” to see people fleeing the region. Europe is struggling to deal with an enormous influx of refugees and migrants, mostly from Syria but also from Iraq and other countries, fleeing violence and poverty. “The millions who are fleeing their homes, that’s not just about Daesh,” said Gen Allen, using an Arabic name for IS. “It’s also about the conditions in the region, the horrendous conditions that are a direct result of Bashar al-Assad and several years of the civil war.”

Egypt government resigns in raging corruption queries Egypt’s government has resigned and the country’s oil minister has been asked to form a new cabinet within a week, the office of President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has said. No official reason was given for the government’s resignation. However, a senior source was quoted as saying the aim was to reshuffle the cabinet following a corruption scandal. Last Monday, Egypt’s agriculture minister was arrested in connection with the corruption inquiry. In a statement, the presidency said Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab had delivered the government’s resignation to President Sisi who accepted it.

Ghana judges now challenge bribery claims suspension A group of Ghanaian judges allegedly caught on camera asking for bribes has filed a legal challenge to their suspension. Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas conducted a two-year undercover investigation into the judges. It is the biggest scandal in the history of Ghana’s judiciary. The 14 judges say they were suspended before they had seen the evidence and given their responses.

Mau Mau veteran’s statue unveiled A UK-funded memorial to Kenyans killed and tortured by British forces during the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s has been unveiled in Nairobi. The monument is part of a 2013-out-of court settlement by the UK government when it agreed to pay Sh2.6 billion in compensation to Mau Mau veterans. It also expressed “sincere regret” for abuses committed under colonial rule. Thousands of veterans crowded into the memorial site at Uhuru Park to witness the historic

unveiling. The statue shows a woman handing food to a Mau Mau fighter, their faces turned away so they could not reveal the other’s identity if caught by the British authorities. Tens of thousands of Kenyans were held in detention camps during the Mau Mau campaign. Many suffered abuses including beatings, rape and castration. “The memorial stands as a symbol of reconciliation between the British government, the Mau Mau, and all those who suffered during

the emergency period,” UK High Commissioner to Kenya Christian Turner said at the ceremony on Saturday. The Mau Mau began a violent campaign against white settlers in 1952, but the uprising was eventually put down by the British colonial government. The Kenya Human Rights Commission says 90,000 Kenyans were executed, tortured or maimed, and 160,000 people were detained in appalling conditions. A number of historians believe the figure is lower.

400 youths to unclog South C drainage ahead of El Nino Nairobi City County has deployed 400 youth in South C area to clear and unclog blocked drainage systems in the area in a bid to mitigate against expected El Nino rains. County Executive for infrastructure and Roads Mohamed Abdullahi said the move is part of plans rolled out to improve the city’s drainage system. “We have deployed 400 young men and women to commence works. This will not only happen in South C, but in the whole of Nairobi since there has been flooding issues arising in the County over the past months,” he said. “Nairobi county government acknowledges the El Nino experience of 1997, flash floods of May, 2015 and their devastating effects. We are now meeting Nairobi residents to conduct public awareness campaigns and use them as platforms to caution them on how to cope with the eminent catastrophy and also take mitigation measures to protect property and human life when the heavy rainfall starts. South C is one of the areas likely to be affected when the rains commence.

minimal disposition of solid waste which he blamed for blocking drainage systems. “We have also put in place plans for the removal solid waste which blocks the drainage system as well as widen and deepen existing drainages. I urge Nairobi area residents to assist the County in ensuring the disposition of solid waste is minimal for it to be easy for water to flow through our respective systems,” added Abdullahi. Egyptian forcEs kill MExican tourists Security forces in Egypt have mistakenly killed 12 people, including Mexican tourists, during an anti-terror operation, the interior ministry says. The tourists were travelling in four vehicles that entered a restricted zone in the Wahat area of the Western Desert, a ministry statement said. Ten Mexicans and Egyptians were also injured and are being treated in a local hospital. The ministry said it had formed a team to investigate the incident. Mexico’s President

Enrique Pena Nieto condemned the incident and said he had “demanded an exhaustive investigation by the Egyptian government”. The Mexican foreign ministry confirmed that at least two of its nationals had been killed and said it was working to confirm the identities of the other victims. In a statement, it said Mexico’s ambassador in Egypt, Jorge Alvarez Fuentes, had visited the local hospital and spoken to five Mexicans who were in a stable condition. The statement (in Arabic) from

Egypt’s interior ministry said the four vehicles the tourists were travelling in were “mistakenly dealt with” during a joint military police and armed forces operation. It said the incident happened on Sunday in an area that “was off limits to foreign tourists” but it did not give an exact location. The tour company transporting the tourists “did not have permits and did not inform authorities”, tourism ministry spokesman Rasha Azaz told the AP news agency. The vast Western Desert area is

popular with foreign sightseers, but is also attractive to militants, correspondents say. A joint force from the Egyptian police and military was pursuing militants in the area - which borders Libya - when the incident happened, officials say. The region is a gateway to the long border and weapons are available on the other side, our correspondent adds. Just yesterday, the Islamic State (IS) group in Egypt claimed it had “resisted a military operation” in the desert.

Amnesty International, a global human-rights lobby, said of the verdict: “The charges against [him] were never adequately substantiated and the prison sentence against him is clearly politically motivated. His only ‘crime’ was being leader of an opposition party in Venezuela.” Human Rights Watch, another international watch-dog, spoke of “egregious violations” of due process. Mr López himself sent a hand-written note from jail saying that he had been fully aware of the consequences when he defied pressure from the regime to leave the country. “My soul, my ideals and my love for you are flying high in the skies above our beautiful Venezuela,” he wrote to his wife and two children. www.economist.com

Thomas de Maizière, Germany’s interior minister, did not specify how long the temporary measures would remain in place, but said they were “urgently needed” both for reasons of security and to curb the huge number of migrants heading for the country. The rare move by Berlin to protect its frontiers and place restrictions on Europe’s open-border Schengen zone goes against one of the EU’s core principles of allowing passport-free travel across most of the bloc. “We simply need some more time, and a certain degree of order on our borders,” Mr de Maizière said at a hastily arranged press conference in Berlin. In the wake of Germany’s move, the German railways operator said trains between Germany, Austria and Hungary had been stopped. www.ft.com

SGR tracks to be laid by end of 2016

Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will see its tracks put in place by the end of 2016, Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina has said. Speaking during a briefing in Nairobi over the weekend, he explained that the tracks for the new, faster railway linking the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa to Kenya’s capital will be laid within the next 15 months and will open for commercial traffic in June 2017, Reuters reports. Maina said that the project, which is being financed in

part by Chinese investors, was ahead of schedule. The initiative has created more than 25,000 employment opportunities for Kenyans, said Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa in an earlier address. He added that the number accounted for local engineers, project supervisors and field workers, who he explained, are working “shoulder by shoulder to speed up the construction.” The project was initially expected to take off in 2018, but the government has fast-

tracked the initiative by giving the plan a higher priority. The Standard Gauge Railway will be the first of its kind in the region, linking Kenya to a number of landlocked neighbouring countries. The line aims to transform the country’s passenger service, which is currently suffering from frequent delays. It also hopes to speed up the flow of cargo by cutting down the travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa to four and a half hours from the current standard of more than 13 hours.

health priorities in sub-Saharan Africa. The event will highlight achievements in the development of pro-poor market-based solutions that address health priorities in Kenya.

Biashara Network Expo at the KICC The Kenya International Convention Center (KICC) will play host to the Biashara Network Expo on Saturday September 19, 2015 at 7:00 am. The event is the largest small

platform. These developments come barely a year after Kenyan lenders adopted chip SIM technology, providing customers with safer, more secure debit and credit card systems.

The growing popularity of the SWIFT platform also follows a series of attacks on Kenyan banks, which collectively lost over Sh4billion to fraudsters in 2012 alone.

School invests in the next Kenyan computer coders A school that emerged as a top feeder of skilled developers to Kenya’s expanding tech community and top ICT companies admitted 12 students from 200 applicants who applied to join the third cohort since it opened last October. Increased demand for quality of education prompted Moringa School to enrol the students which its co-founder, Audrey Chang admits that is just a drop in the ocean. “The demand for quality, talented developers in Kenya is very high. We went to a couple of universities and learned how they teach Computer Science and we saw it is very theoretical. We are just scratching the surface with our students,” said Chang. According to both Chang and Co-founder Frank Timre, a number of enterprises are not only lacking developed skills but also need to sharpen problem solving and critical thinking skills. “For a majority of them (graduates), inability to put to practice what they study in school and Lack of Practical skills. Armed with information the two have set up a school where young developers learn and perfect different programming languages to

ensure learners are well-rounded. “We filtered through applications looking for individuals that fit our pre-interview scale and then interviewed the candidates based on their communication skills, maths, logic, coding skills, and personality,” says Chang. The SwitchUp rating website reveals that 59 per cent of students reported a salary increase after the code course averaging $23,000 annually. Ian Munene, a Computer Science graduate and a hacker at Moringa confirms the chances of securing a job with just campus qualifications are slim to nil. “It was tough because most of the jobs required two years plus working experience and the programming once needed people with really advanced coding techniques. I was actually rejected twice in interviews I had attended,” says Munene. Frank says that Moringa School is developing coders for ready market and training young students to be better placed in the modern environment. The practical approach of the school requires to solve problems by building apps and software which they can showcase to potential employers.

ho is Dennis Ivix? I am Nairobi’s youngest fashion emcee, unless you have heard of any other? You have not done this professionally for long, how’ve you gotten noticed that quickly? Whenever I host or attend an event, I make sure I create a lasting impression. What is your connection with fashion? I have always loved fashion. I’m a fashion enthusiast and always make a point of standing out whenever I step out. For me, image is everything. How do you get your gigs and what people of high stature have you met? I attend corporate and fashion events. This way, I get to interact with people in the fashion and corporate world. I’ve met Robert F. Godec American Ambassador to Kenya, Justice Joyce Aluoch a judge at the ICC, Cabinet secretary Adan Mohammed among others. How is the journey so far? So far so good, I am step by step conquering in my field. Because it’s what I’m interested in. Recently, fashion critique Robert Burale mentioned that you’re one of the best dressed persons in the streets, do you dress yourself? Yes I do. I believe being in the fashion industry, I should be able to dress myself and do it well. Therefore I know how to pair up a few outfits here and there. It is interesting that Robert recognised my efforts that are geared towards outdoing him! Who would you work for as a stylist? You have no idea how much I want to dress the President of the republic of Kenya. He dresses well but he’d look great in slim fit

suits. Oversized suits make him look bad. How do you manage to remain positive when things are going south? The friends I have are big dreamers. They keep me on my toes. Also, it’s how I keep reassuring myself that things have to look up. Self-motivation is best motivation. I am also

religious. What have you had to give up to keep moving forward? A number of things and one of them sadly being some friends. Some friends are always negative influence and that’s not the kind of energy you need to keep moving. Sometimes you sacrifice some.

What’s next for you? My partners and I are coming up with a monthly engagement which is a platform for young people to meet and interact with people they admire and aspire to be like. Imagine meeting your biggest inspiration and having a moment with them. Closing remarks.

Whatever dreams you have, keep at them and never lose sight of them. #TeamAmbition is the motto. FACT FILE: Name: Dennis Ivix Karanja Age: 25 Quote: Never be afraid to try something new. hen two people are in love, a million years may seem like a single day. This was the case with John Kirika and his bride, Joyce Wambui, who met in 1994 through a friend from the village. “Our friendship started twenty years ago when my friend visited together with her after schools had closed,” reveals the groom. From the day John laid eyes on Joyce, he knew that she was the one, as he narrates to X Access. “From the day I met her, the chemistry was on point and I already knew deep inside that she was the one.” With her character being exactly what John had always wanted in his dream princess, he decided to propose to her after three years of courting in a faraway country. “I left for England in 1996 and she joined me a year later in 1997. One day after classes, I proposed during a dinner date and she accepted,” he recalls. So what made Joyce say yes to John, and how did she know that he was “the one”? “John facilitated my college visa, all the tickets and the accommodation arrangements when I was studying in England. From his selflessness, I knew he was the one…just the one. In fact, I was just waiting for the day he would propose so that I could say a big yes to him. “Beams Joyce. Fast forward to last Saturday, eighteen years after

the grand exotic proposal. “The color theme for our wedding was prominently purple and beige. She chose these colors mainly because they are her favorite and of course, purple is the color of royalty and wealth,” John told us. For the groom and his men, the color was light gold with a touch of purple on their shirts and ties while the bridal party was dressed in all purple full length attires with embroidery on the bodice. The wedding day always belongs to the bride and her gown is probably the most important of all. Joyce is all too happy to tell us about her special gown “My gown was designed with the help of my best friend,” she says. “I had to lose a few pounds so as to fit in it the way I visualized the outcome, in terms of the curves and flow,” she adds lightly. After the normal wedding routine; church service, photo session, reception and cake cutting, the newlyweds set out for their honeymoon which is a bit out of the ordinary: a whole 10 days break on one of the best sandy beaches at the North Coast. Congratulations to the newlyweds. X Access wishes them a fruitful and happy life together.

Statistics reveals that more than 50 per cent of global population are youth and lack of jobs has been endemic, making agriculture as a key job creator both locally and internationally. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Your significant other might be in a foul humor. When the two of you get together, you might want to sit in companionable silence and not say much. Your beloved has had a rough day and is irritated at words and gestures that would be endearing at other times. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 There might be delays due to circumstances beyond your control. You could experience that old mounting frustration. There’s no use fighting the invisible foe. Accept the fact that you may not be able to accomplish everything you’d set out to do. Treat yourself to a quiet evening. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 A lot of energy might be expended on an artistic project that you probably won’t like, Gemini. You could get halfway through and then toss it away. This could be disheartening as you could lament the time and effort lost. But this happens to all great artists. Go ahead and start over. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Family members might discuss a possible vacation today, Cancer, but everyone wants to go to a different place! Arguments could occur, taking all the fun out of the discussion. Perhaps you should draw straws! Discuss the subject again in a few days. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Today it may appear that a lot of people are arguing over very strange things, Leo. Distance yourself and don’t try to mediate. VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 Tempers could be short in a group with which you’re affiliated, Virgo. What started as a meeting could end with disagreements. You might be tempted to chastise everyone, but that isn’t a good idea. You won’t stop the battle, and everyone involved will resent whatever you do. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Your tasks could require more effort than usual, and you could be exhausted by midday. This isn’t the day to prove anything. Work according to your own strengths at your own speed. You’ll probably accomplish more this way than by pushing yourself. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Your nerves could be on edge. You might even lose your temper on occasion. Stop and take a look at why you’re upset. Consider what’s coming up from the past and then release it. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you return to normal. You might be able to get some work done! SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 This person may be bored and antsy, and you should be prepared to hear all about the frustrations. Your friend needs a sympathetic ear, so listen. Someday you might want someone to do the same for you! Be supportive without agreeing with every complaint.

Threats to discipline officers unfortunate Threats by Police Spokesman Charles Owino that disciplinary action will be taken against officers features on NTV’s expose Serve and Suffer are very unfortunate. While Mr Owino appeared to have a point that the officers could have betrayed their codes of operation, it is the only option they have to silently protest against the pathetic conditions they are left to work in.

Terrorists have caused immense harm to this country and our security personnel deployed to guard the nation must be well taken care of. Someone should tell Owino that the officers are human beings too and if pushed to the wall, can rebel and expose the country to even greater suffering. — Otieno Mcobuya, Nairobi

SPORTS BRIEFS Swiss Federer loses to Djokovic in US Open to miss 18th major title World number one Novak Djokovic beat Swiss Roger Federer in four dramatic sets to win his second US Open and 10th Grand Slam title. The Serb won 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-4 in New York, and will end the year with three of the four tennis majors. Djokovic, 28, held his nerve in front of a heavily pro-Federer crowd at Flushing Meadows to beat his senior, 34-year-old Swiss had been hoping to win his 18th major title and first for three years. In a raucous New York night session atmosphere on Arthur Ashe Stadium, after the start of play was delayed by more than three hours because of rain, Federer looked to have a real chance in the third set. However, Djokovic broke the Federer serve six times and saved 19 of 23 break points as he battled his way to a 27th win in 28 Grand Slam matches this year. Djokovic took another step towards joining the very best in history with a 10th major title.

Australia thrash England in one day cricket series Australia thump England by eight wickets in their fifth and final one-day international at Old Trafford on Sunday to win the series 3-2 and take some consolation for the pain of Ashes defeat. The result looked inevitable, with England dismissed for 138 and captain Eoin Morgan retiring hurt after being hit on the head by a bouncer from Australia’s Mitchell Starc in the seventh over. With England winning the toss and opting to bat, Australia’s bowlers let rip and seized crucial early wickets -- reducing the hosts to 22-3 and 72-6 before wrapping up the England innings in only 33 overs. Both England’s openers fell for four, Jason Roy given out lbw to Starc, although had he gone to the third umpire he may well have been reprieved. Alex Hales went shortly after, slicing a John Hastings delivery to point. Marsh also took the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and David Willey for a haul of four for 27.

Orange open nine point lead with JKUAT defeat Telkom Orange on the other hand extended their dominance in the domestic women’s national competition with 11-0 win over Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Jane Ofula and Audrey Omaido each grabbed a hattrick for 17 times national champions with Hellen Chemtai and Captain Betsy Ommala each scoring a brace and Jaqueline Mwangi hitting the back of the board once. The win took Orange to nine point clear off second plced Sliders who has 15 points. Kenya Police cut Butali Sugar Warrior lead at the top of Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) premier league to within a point following a 7-0 win over Parklands Sports Club. Captain Richard Birir and Moses Cheplaiti led unbeaten Police to their 10th win this season with a brace each taking their point tally to 30. Oliver Echenje, Brian Saina and Samuel Wokila also scored to make sure the team stays close to Butali.

Kirui now hunts for new Personal Best in Amsterdam marathon After missing a place in team Kenya World Championship squad, two times world marathon champion Abel Kirui has set his eyes on Rio 2016 Olympics with a promise to win gold for Kenya if selected. But first Kirui whose 2:05:04 places him the sixth fastest man in the world in the distance races targets a new Personal Best time when he will compete with some of the best runners of the marathon in TCS Amsterdam Marathon set for October 18. He will return to the city where he finished sixth in his first race after shaking off a nagging injury after 2012 London Olympics. “My body is in good shape and the training is going on well. Kirui who is the Ambassador for Ndakaini half marathon told X-Sport when we caught up with him in Murang’a county. “I want to post a new Personal Best, possibly 2:04.00” added the Administration Police officer, who is the third man in the history to have defended a world championship title, following his triumph in Daegu 2011 after 2:06:54 posted in Berlin in 2009. Kirui has a well-laid plan and just as he did five years ago in Daegu where he won gold, the father of one will take part in one of the early marathon majors to allow his body enough time to recover should he be picked for Rio. “I have realised unlike world marathon (majors), the country’s expectation is too high in championships such as Olympics and world championship. The last two championships (London and Beijing) have never been good for us as a country in terms of medals, but if I make it to the squad then we will sit down as a team and come up with a strategy that will see us return with gold,” said Kirui who was not impressed by Kenya’s marathon team performance in Beijing. “I want to start early preparation,” added Kirui. “I will have to take part in some early marathon, maybe Tokyo to give myself enough time to prepare for the Olympics.” In Amsterdam, Kirui will face among other Jonathan Maiyo, a former Pace Maker who

Two times world champion Abel Kirui (left) leads compatriot Wilson Kipsang during the London Marathon. He will participate in Amsterdam Marathon in October ahead of 2016 Rio Olympics.

apart from his PB of 2:04:56 helped Haile Gebrselassie to break a world record in 2008. Others are Amsterdam Marathon defending champion Bernard Kipyego who has reached the podium in at least five word majors , Tokyo,

London, Paris, Boston, Chicago and Wilson Chebet. Kurui clearly knows the challenge ahead in the races where he finished sixth in his debut last year.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Leicester City defender Ritchie De Laet vies for the ball with Aston Villa marksman Gabriel Aghbonlahor yesterday. The Foxes came from behind to beat Villa 3-2.

Leicester storm to second, as Spurs record first EPL win Unbeaten Leicester City produced a thrilling secondhalf comeback to recover from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa and move second in the EPL table while Ryan Mason’s late strike earned Tottenham victory at Sunderland and the club’s first league win of the season. Jack Grealish curled in a deserved opener from 20 yards, his first goal, for a dominant Villa early on and Carles Gil swept in a second. Ritchie de Laet volleyed the host’s opener and Jamie Vardy drew Leicester level before Nathan Dyer scored the winner with a brave late header on his debut after signing from Swansea on loan

on deadline day, but made himself an instant hero and left Villa with just one win from five matches. Dyer beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan to a chipped pass from the impressive Riyad Mahrez before taking a blow to the head and staying down injured as the ball rolled into the net. Algerian winger Mahrez proved the inspiration behind Leicester’s second-half recovery as he continued his impressive start to the season. He has scored four goals already this season to help the Foxes to an unbeaten start, but a poor first half was mirrored by his side as they were dominated by Villa.

He came to life after the break with a stunning display of pace and skill, having a hand in all three of rejuvenated Leicester’s second-half goals. His improvement, and his side’s, came when they switched to a 4-2-3-1 from a 4-4-2, as the Foxes took the game to Villa. They were well on top when Gil doubled Villa’s lead but, with Mahrez’s corner flicked home by De Laet, Leicester continued to push and got the goals their second-half display deserved. Spurs’ first league win Having failed to muster an effort on target in the first half, Spurs broke the deadlock when Mason dinked his shot

past the onrushing Costel Pantilimon, injuring himself while doing so. Neither side’s attack was on top form. Little could be gauged from how new signings Son Heung-min of Tottenham and Sunderland’s Fabio Borini will fare this season. South Korea forward Son, who signed for a reported £22m, was brought in to help ease the scoring burden Harry Kane - last season’s 31goal man. He played in a three behind the England striker, wearing seven but almost playing like a number 10, and was given responsibility to take set pieces in the final third.

Barca lead Spanish charges as Champions League resumes European champions Barcelona will lead five Spanish football clubs when 2015.2016 UEFA Championship league kick of this Wednesday across Europe. Spanish clubs have dominated the Champions League lately and there will be a record five fighting for this year’s title and the odds are stacked in their favour again when the group stage begins this week. Sevilla became the last Spanish side to have made it to the elite league of European football when they knocked out Scottish side Celtic in the playoff last week. Others are 2014 champions Real Madrid who will host Shakhtar Donetsk

on Tuesday. Barcelona will kick off their title defence against Roma Wednesday, while Real. Manchester United who are making a return to the competition after a season in the cold will be without Wayne Rooney when they travel to PSV Endhoven today. Luis Van Gaal will rely on new signings on Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay who will return to the club he ditched for Old Trafford. According to former Endhoven coach, Aad de Mos, Depay is expected to walk back to a hostile environment where he will be “eaten raw” and “wiped out”

Their neighbours Manchester City who spent £250m on new plyers will begin their campaign for a first European title against Paul Pogba’s Juventus. City has never advanced beyond the round of 16. 2012 champions, Chelsea, the only London Club to have won the title will entertain Macabbi Tel Aviv of Israel. Chelsea has opened their title defense on a wrote foot succumbing to three loses in five matches and any further slip up will raise more speculation on Jose Mourino’s future at the club where he’s searching for the Only trophy he’s never won while in charge at the Stamford Bridge.

Gor seek to wrap up title defence at City G

or Mahia will be seeking to be crowned Sport Pesa Premier League champions on Wednesday when they host Sony Sugar at City Stadium. K’Ogalo’s who remains unbeaten in the league are seeking just a point to wrap up the title defence after Ulinzi Stars delayed their celebrations with a barren draw at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru yesterday. The draw means the Green Army faithful will have to wait for at least two more days before they toss champaign as they wait to celebrate their team’s 15th title and a third successive silverware in their recent past. Gor, 2015 CECAFA Kagame Cup finalist, is currently top of the standing with 63 points from 25 matches. A point against Sony will see them take their point tally to 64, 13 clear of Ulinzi who can only collect a maximum 12 points from their last four matches which will still place them second should

Gor lose all their remaining four fixtures. Ulinzi, second on the table with 51 points after 26 games can still win the league but they need to score more than 26 goals in their remaining four matches and hope that Gor lose all the remaining matches without scoring to get a clear chance of winning the league. K’Ogalo did not perform as expected in their last match against Ulinzi who executed their plan against the visitors in a boring first half match characterised by dangerous tackles but no real threats in either goals. Meddie Kagere escaped a red card despite a stump on Eric Apul just outside Ulinzi’s box. Mohammed Hassan was also lucky to have finished the match following his dangerous and careless tackles on opponents, but at the end of the day his unprofessional behaviours still rescued a point for his side which now sits firmly second with 51

points from 26 matches. Nakuru All Stars is still rooted at the bottom of the table despite beating Kenya Commercial Bank 5-2, the biggest score margin in the top elite Kenyan football in the recent past. Meanwhile, Tusker forward Jesse Were is still top of the scorers chart with 19 points, three better than Micheal Olunga (Gor) who is second with 15. Meddie Kagere (Gor Mahia) has 13 while John Makwata (Ulinzi Stars), Kiongera Mungai (KCB) both on 10 with Ali Abondo (Gor Mahia), Boniface Akenga (Nakuru All Stars), Sanneh Ebrima (City Stars) both fourth with nine each. Jacob Keli who left AFC leopard for Zambian side and Moses Arita (Ushuru) are both on fifth with eight goals while Ray Omondi (Thika United), John Baraza (Ushuru), Bebeto Lwamba (Nakuru All Stars) have hit the target seven times.
