TSC chairperson Lydia Nzomo also said the teachers will not be paid for the days they have missed work. But while reacting to the threats today, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion termed

According to him, TSC has no moral ground to threaten teachers who are enjoying their constitutional rights. “Coming out to threaten teachers does not help. It hardens teachers and complicating the conflict. TSC is playing into the gallery of disaster of their own by threatening teachers because the pains and injuries of teachers are too much to bear. In fact they are more than willing to lose salaries not just for a month but for a couple of months until justice is done,” Mr Sossion told Capital FM today. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Kibera pupils jam study center as nationwide teachers’ strike bites While the standoff between the government and teachers continues, the shutdown of public schools is spelling doom and uncertainty on students. Whereas private school students are going on with learning, their counterparts in public schools are have borne the brunt of the ongoing strike as warring parties have failed to agree on a way forward. Standard Eight and Form Four students set to sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations in a month’s time are the worst hit. Some learners have now turned to private tuition centres as last resort. One such is centre is in the heart of Kibera slum called Uweza Foundation The foundation situated in a small compound was set up to help children who do not have electricity in their homes to study at night during school holidays. But since the teachers’ strike began two weeks ago, the centre has been converted to a primary and secondary school. It is fully packed with lower, upper and high school students from different schools in Nairobi with learners dressed in home clothes while others are in school uniform. Everything around is quiet despite the large number inside the compound. Only on opening a small gate that leads to the compound does one immediately tell that the desire for education is real. Form Three and Form Four students are squeezed in a tiny room without walls to separating them only the three teachers volunteering to teach them can differentiate them. Outside the small compound, Form Ones and Twos are sharing tables under tents. Chairs meant to hold five students have eight of them grappling for the smallest sitting space available. Standard One and Two students are sitting on a mat placed on the floor.
HARD TIMES: Learners scramble for studying space at the Kibera Uwezo Foundation. Pupils have jammed the center since teachers commenced their strike more than two weeks ago.
According to Uweza Foundation country director William Moi, “the number of children asking for space to study at the centre has been on the rise since day three of the teachers’ strike. We don’t have any more space left.” “I did not know many children needed a place to study. I approached the foundation because I wanted my daughter Elizabeth Teresa to study here during the strike. But then many other parents also needed the service, so we decided to allow them in, now they are too many.” According to Moi, there are only three voluntary teachers. Moleen Milugwe, one of the teachers says it is quite tiring, but adds that the children’s compassion keeps her
going. “For the past two weeks I have volunteered. We have children from various schools coming to the centre.” “We group learners according to their classes. They could be sharing a table, like the Class Ones are on one edge of the table, the Class Twos on the other edge and the Class Threes on the other one. Today the Class Fours are full house, they are sitting on a mat,” she explained. The three teachers teach without a break from 8am to 1pm. “I just get content… one at a time, I explain, that means 10 minutes; a child will at least grasp, I then give them work, before I move to another table, within 35 minutes stipulated
for a lesson, I will have moved to three classes. Then come back to the class I started with to go through it by asking questions, then we mark the work together,” she explains. It is a difficult situation to study in, but better than staying at home. It remains a worrying situation and one that taints the hopes of thousands of Standard Eight and Form Four students. Farida Anyoso is a KCPE candidate at Mbagathi Road Primary School. “The strike has really interfered with us. As candidates, we are facing so many challenges. We are losing our future. We are the ones you are starving, and for them (government and teachers) have their education already. For us to get that future we
must learn so that we can be what we want,” she said. Teresa, a Form Two student at Ngara Girls fears that their end year exams will be affected as they will not be able to go through the whole syllabus. “We should be in school finishing up the syllabus, we are not in school, we should be preparing for our exams, but there is no way we can do that without teachers. We do not know how we are going to make it through the exams,” she said as she urged the government and the teachers to consider their plight. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke
Teachers are willing to lose their salaries: Knut From Page 1 “TSC has no moral ground because TSC is in contempt of court and we have cited the chair for contempt, we have cited the Chief Executive alongside the Cabinet Secretary Treasury, Labour and Education together with their Principal Secretaries. So TSC has no moral ground to intimidate teachers who are enjoying their constitutional rights. It is a constitutional right to strike.” Sossion indicated that the
announcement by the teachers’ employer further undermined the ongoing court process and read mischief in the way it was done. “Somebody cannot imagine that you dangle a carrot of salaries and threaten them so that they go back to class. That will not work but it is also undermining the court process which is going on today. What was the urgency of doing that? Why would they not have waited for the court process that is on today before doing that? They are misinformed.
These are frantic and desperate efforts by the Teachers Service Commission,” he stated. The Commission Chairperson Lydia Nzomo had said that it will be closing the September payroll on Friday and will not process salary for teachers, who have been participating on strike. “We should be prepared to lose our salaries. We should be prepared to suffer for this noble objective to defend the 50 – 60 and in any case we are not going to lose because
we are within law. It is a court that ruled and we were supposed to be paid from August 1 and we have not been paid. So in this case TSC is squarely on the dock and it must answer,” he added. Nzomo while declaring the ‘no work no pay’ verdict said any teacher who has not taught for the last 14 days would be deemed to have deserted work. Meanwhile, the petition that seeks to determine the legality of the ongoing teachers’ strike that is in
its third week was due to be heard today at the Employment and Labour Relations Court. TSC had filed an application asking the court to stop the strike but the teachers’ unions raised a preliminary objection, saying the Commission had failed to obey court orders. They had asked the court not to entertain any pleas from the commission until they implement the order. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Kidero in fresh move to rid city of roundabouts Roundabouts on major Nairobi roads will be converted into one way streets in the next four months, Governor Evans Kidero has announced. In what appears to be a fresh move that could see roundabouts along busy roads blocked, Kidero defended the conversion, saying it will ease traffic and make it more secure for a 24 hour economy in the city. “Preliminary studies have shown that removal of roundabouts increases traffic flow by 30 per cent and we are just going to limit it to removal of roundabouts,” he announced today. The Kimathi Street-Kenyatta Avenue roundabout in the heart of the Central Business District is among those listed to be done away with. Others are the intersection of Koinange Street and Kenyatta Avenue, Juja road roundabout and those on Kiringyaga road. The roundabouts along the Uhuru Highway will also be converted to one way. “Traffic flow is much better, take for example Westlands

Frequently breaking down in tears as she gave evidence to the court in Nairobi via video-link from London, Tuweni said she needed money to pay for medical help, according to Kenyan rights group Journalists for Justice, whose representative was present at the hearing. Documents submitted for the case stated that Tuweni was suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after she was “mentally and physically tortured” during her detention. Her ability to make a livelihood had been dealt “a fatal blow” by her ordeal, and she had lost the trust of business contacts as a result, the documents added. Tuweni was born in Zanzibar, but is now a UAE citizen and no longer holds Tanzanian citizenship. The Kenyan police deny all the allegations, and “have no records” of Tuweni or her colleagues being taken into custody, according to
an affidavit by the AntiTerrorism Police Unit (ATPU). According to UK-based campaign group Redress, she was beaten throughout her time in captivity, threatened with rape and narrowly escaped being sold for drugs. Tuweni, and two of her business colleagues, were arrested in Malindi. On her arrival at the police station in Nairobi, an officer greeted her, saying: “Welcome, al-Qaeda”, she told the BBC’s Focus on Africa radio programme yesterday. “I want them to pay for what I have been through for all these years. I do not know why they put me there in the first place,” she said. Her colleagues, from Oman, were released after being questioned but she says she was taken to Somalia, where she was kept in a cell along with 21 other people. After fighting escalated in Mogadishu, she says she was transferred to Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa, she says she was interrogated by FBI agents, and eventually released without any charge.

N. Korea dares US on nuclear weapons North Korea says its main nuclear facility, the Yongbyon complex, has resumed normal operations. The country was improving its nuclear weapons “in quality and quantity”, state-run news agency KCNA reported. Yongbyon’s reactor was shut down in 2007 but Pyongyang vowed to restart it in 2013, following its third nuclear test amid high regional tensions. The reactor has been the source of plutonium for North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme. Experts believe if re-started, the reactor could potentially make one bomb worth of plutonium per year. The announcement is the first official confirmation from North Korea that it has restarted operations at Yongbyon. However, a US think-tank said earlier this year that satellite images suggested that work had commenced at the plant. KCNA also said today the North was ready to face US hostility with “nuclear weapons any time”. However, the full scope of Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities is unclear. Pyongyang claims it has made a device small enough to fit a nuclear warhead on to a missile, which it could launch at its enemies. However, US officials have cast doubt on this claim and experts say it is difficult to assess the progress North Korea has made on miniaturisation.
Sport fans influence team performance, reveals study Sport fans actually play a major role in helping their teams win football matches, science has confirmed. Experts have discovered that a team is more likely to win a game when playing at home than away. In fact, recent studies have shown that the notion of having a “home field advantage” is a genuine cause for concern for rival teams. By studying the wins and losses of various teams across various sporting events, a team of experts discovered that playing at home had an obvious advantage to playing on a foreign field. Academics from two separate US-based universities focused on two basketball teams and determined that home field advantage helped one team win 43 per cent

Building falls in Nigeria school kills four pupils
At least four children have died after a primary school building collapsed near the central Nigerian city of Jos, according to officials. Twenty-four pupils were injured in the incident at the Abu Naima Islamic school on Sunday, Mohammed Abdulsalam, from the National Emergency Management Agency said. It is unclear whether more students may be trapped under the rubble, he added. Building collapses often occur during the rainy season in Nigeria. The cause of the collapse is not clear, but investigators are trying to determine whether it may have been due to extra floors being added to the one-storey building.

The experts, who checked the wins and losses of the teams between 1999 and 2014, determined that the wins were as a result of the enthusiasm of the large crowd of supporters. The data shows that home field advantage increases the odds of winning by 21 to 22.8 percentage points. “Essentially, the entire home advantage between the two teams is attributable to the crowd effect,” reads an excerpt from the Journal of Sports Economics. The experts, however, indicate that the exact manner by which supportive crowds contribute to home advantage is not yet well understood.

EGYPT APOLOGISES FOR MEXICO DEATHS Egypt has apologised after 12 people, including eight Mexican tourists, were mistakenly killed by security forces in an anti-terror operation. The group had permission to travel to a remote area of the Western Desert, tourism officials said. However the interior ministry insists they entered a restricted area. Egypt has been battling Islamist militants for years, with attacks escalating since the 2013 ousting of Islamist President Mohammed
Morsi. While the vast Western Desert is a popular tourist site, it has become increasingly dangerous because of the deteriorating security situation in Libya. Ten Mexicans and Egyptians were injured in the operation. Security officials put the number of Mexican tourists killed at eight, although this is yet to be confirmed by Mexico, with four Egyptians dead. Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab offered his apologies in a phone call to the Mexican ambassador in Cairo, the Al-Yawm
al-Sabi website reported. “I have phoned Mexican Ambassador Alvarez Fuentes to reassure him that the injured are receiving proper medical care and that the government apologises for the foreign casualties,” the website quoted him as saying. Mr Mahlab also said the incident took place “by mistake as the state continues to fight terrorism”. Survivors told the Mexican ambassador they had been bombed by helicopters and aircraft when they stopped for a break.
The head of the Egyptian Union of Tour Guides, Hassan El Nahla, posted online what appeared to be an itinerary sent to tourism police. He told the BBC the group had a police escort and travelled through several checkpoints before coming under fire. An Egyptian interior ministry statement had earlier said the incident happened on Sunday in an area “off limits to foreign tourists”, although it did not give an exact location.

After their union, the couple lived in Mombasa and then moved to London in October the same year. In 2014, the woman filed for divorce stating that their marriage was yet to be consummated as the husband was impotent...

Minister, Tony Abbott, has been ousted after losing a dramatic late-night party ballot to his communications minister, Malcolm Turnbull. The move, capping a tumultuous period in the nation’s political life, means that Turnbull is now set to be sworn in as Australia’s fifth prime minister in five years. Turnbull secured 54 votes from his parliamentary colleagues, giving him a narrow edge over Abbott’s 44 votes, after promising a new style of leadership that respected voters’ intelligence and restored traditional cabinet government. In Australian politics, members of a political party can attempt to ambush a leader with a sudden request to “spill” – or declare vacant – the leadership. of “super PACs“ that would exploit the loopholes and legal grey areas that Republicans have already used to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for the 2016 campaign through such groups. The plans, laid out by the party’s top election lawyers in an emergency request filed with the Federal Election Commission on Friday, would pave the way for the creation of a host of new super PACs tailored to individual House and Senate candidates. But the filing also suggests that Democrats would, if allowed, seek to use tactics pioneered by Republican presidential candidates this cycle, helping prospective candidates establish and raise money for super PACs before they officially declare their intent to run. Most strikingly, the lawyers are asking the commission to clarify how declared candidates, their campaign staff and their volunteers can help court donors for independent super PACs www.nytimes.com
September 13th Thomas de Maizière, the Interior Minister, explained Germany’s stunning policy, after giving the order to interrupt train connections between Germany and Austria and to begin spot checks on car traffic across the German-Austrian border. In effect, Germany is imposing sharp limits on asylum seekers only a week after it had appeared to throw its borders wide open. In the first weekend of September, Angela Merkel, the chancellor, unexpectedly allowed trains to carry refugees from Hungary, where they were stranded, through Austria to Bavaria. More than 20,000 arrived in Munich in that weekend alone. Many were greeted enthusiastically by ordinary Germans eager to help those in need. But Mrs Merkel quickly explained that this was only an “exception” to the existing rules... www.economist.com
member states failed to reach unanimous agreement on the plan, although a majority — including France and Germany — supported the scheme. Countries in favour of the plan will now try to force through a deal with a qualified majority at another meeting in October, setting the stage for a bitter diplomatic fight in the intervening period. Although qualified majority votes are acceptable under EU law, they are rarely used to force through decisions on politically sensitive topics against vocal opposition. Hungary was supposed to be one of the beneficiaries of the scheme but has opposed it, arguing that it is not a front-line country and that it has only suffered a huge influx of migrants because Greece has failed to manage its borders. Officials also say that it would risk turning the country into a holding pen for migrants who do not want to stay there. www.ft.com

UN reforms to cut down the 60pc health budget spent on HIV/AIDS Ahead of a meeting by world leaders to discuss the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) later this month, it has emerged that Kenya relies heavily on foreign donors for health-based funding. As a result, the country, and the government at large, is unable to provide muchneeded health resources for its citizens. It has also emerged that roughly 60 per cent of Kenya’s annual $1.25 billion (Sh132 billion) health budget is spent on HIV/AIDS, the Thomson Reuters Foundation
confirmed. Through an analysis of government and United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) statistics, the Foundation has discovered that about three quarters of the funds come from international sources. Despite the fact that HIV prevalence among adults has almost halved over the past two decades the disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Kenya, says Reuters. It is responsible for nearly 3 out of every 10 deaths in the
country, where 1.6 million Kenyans are infected. UNAIDS warns that the unbalanced focus on the crisis has come at the expense of other diseases and the wider health system struggling to reach people in low income and remote regions. It has been stressed that the country should have attained universal health coverage, good quality, affordable health services for all, as well as greater recruitment, training and retention of health workers by the forthcoming deadline.
HIV PREVALENCE: The UNAIDS noted that Kenya depends so much of foreign financing to deal with HIV/AIDS cases while 60 per cent of its health budget goes towards the same.

Kenya’s unclaimed assets in billions, UFAA reports Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFFA) has collected Sh 3.4 billion as unclaimed assets in Kenya. UFAA Chairman Vincent Kimosop said in November 2014, they issued the notice to all institutions to comply with requirements of the law and this is the money we would not be talking about had this institution not been there. According to him, there is an African culture of non-documentation. “Unclaimed records are the reason why we are in business, because people don’t write wills,” he said UFAA started operations in March 2013 with the first batch of money being received in June 2014 from the Treasury. He sated UFAA is the only unique model in the world whereby it handles the money, look for the people and invest the money to wean itself off from the Treasury and become a selfsustaining institution. ‘’UFAA is the first of its kind across the continent carrying the responsibility to set benchmarks and create new ones that can be emulated by other countries,’’ CNBC reports. “The function of the UFAA is to hold assets in trust before they find the rightful owners and it works upon directives from the National Treasury,” he concluded.

any football matches are currently being held in faraway stadia especially in Nakuru, Naivasha and Machakos, eager fans have adopted the carpooling culture where a group of fans rent a vehicle to ferry them to and from the designated match venue at a combined cost. This means that wherever there is a derby outside the city, the highways leading to the match venue are swamped with football fans owned or rented vehicles and for them, traffic rules do not exist at least not from the pictures. It is no secret that in matches involving AFC Leopards or Gor Mahia, losing is never an option, at least for their fans. Whenever these teams win, celebrations are taken from the stadium to the street and all the way back home along highways and in the event of a loss, the competition is
carried on unofficially by fans off the pitch and into highways on their way back to the city in the form of ‘who can drive fastest’ standoffs. Here is where death finds an opportunity to strike as the designated drivers, who are almost always intoxicated, lose control of the over loaded unbalanced vehicles ferrying fans back home culminating into multiple deaths or serious injuries in the best case scenario. But the blame here is not just on reckless driving but also on the fans themselves. It is not uncommon to see football fans dangling dangerously on buses in motion, while some are naïve enough to sit on these buses’ roofs, blatantly oblivious of would happen to them in case the driver has to use emergency brakes . This ignorant violation of the most basic traffic rules coupled with the mob psychology
that comes with football derbies is the reason we are losing young Kenyans to road crashes from excessive celebrations or attempts to maintain team relevance after a loss. While some are lucky enough to emerge from these road accidents alive, others like Jackie Ochieng’, aka Nyar Annasy are not granted the chance to embark on another road trip to witness rowdy football action around the country. Jackie passed away on Sunday after the vehicle she was travelling back home in rammed into a trailer along Jogoo Road in the city while her travel companions were rushed to hospital in critical condition. Strangely, her life partner, Roy Kohadha, a one-time famous blogger and Gor Mahia die hard, passed away under similar circumstances two years ago. Jackie is but the latest victim of
gruesome accidents involving football fans. In the year 2011, three AFC Leopards fans died on their way back to Nairobi after attending a football derby in Karuturi, after the pickup van that they were travelling in collided with a trailer at the Mai Mahiu blackspot. Another two fans from the Gor Mahia side lost their lives in 2012 while travelling from the very same Karuturi stadium after a match between Gor Mahia and Karuturi Sports, while just last month, a Gor Mahia fan was knocked down dead in the city amidst celebrations by what irate fans termed as a rogue city council vehicle. All these unwarranted deaths beg the question; is there really nothing that can be done to control fans on the road?

he word is full of art! Green Lake has been called the “diamond gem” in Austria’s crown due to the natural phenomenon that occurs every spring when the snow melts off the surrounding rugged mountains and park benches, flowers, footbridges, trees and walking paths disappear under water. The very cold but crystal clear water becomes a hot spot for divers who want to experience the exquisite and otherworldly scene. There is a bridge and bench that disappears under the mountain run off. Something even more amazing about this lake is the fact it dries off almost completely before winter.

n his twenties, a boy would be sent to scout for a wife. He would be tasked with the responsibility of picking out a girl with good attributes. Families with a history of witchcraft, mental illnesses and laziness would be avoided so as to keep the family name intact. Okobasa which means to elope was a taboo and therefore discouraged. Upon finding the bride, the groom would then report to the parents that he had found a potential wife. Elders then sent emissaries to the girl’s family and it was then that the dowry negotiations would begin. After the dowry has been paid, a special day known as ekerorano is set-aside for the bride and groom to meet. After introductions, the bride and groom would then have a physical examination where they check each others upper body for incisions or marks which were an indication of beauty and strength. Upon satisfaction, the bride and groom would shake hands and promise not to go back on their promise to marry each other. It is after this that food would be served. Before the wedding, the bride was allowed to visit her groom but only in the company of a young boy or girl who would sleep between them so as to avoid any sexual encounter. A wedding date was set when the bride would be escorted by a group of girls to her matrimonial home. The groom would arrive a day earlier and organize a party where they danced the night away. Gifts including a large pot and blankets for the mother in law and a goat for the father in law were exchanged for bearing a beautiful daughter.

icole Isabel describes her art of photography as simple and natural because of her love for the unseen beauty. Nicole has always been “the man behind the camera” since she was around 13 years old. “Every event I attended, posed as an arena for me to take photos and improve my skills. I mostly used any guest’s camera to take the photos until I bought my first point and shoot camera, when I was 17 years; I still hold it dear to date. I later started professional photography in 2013 after acquiring my first DSLR (Nikon D5200). I had an easy time navigating round a complex camera having had the knowledge of using cameras,” she tells X Access. Nicole says lenses and natural light is most important while shooting. Like other forms of art, completion depends on the workload at hand. For instance, if she took say a minimum of two hundred and fifty photos in an event, the turn-around time would be three to five working days. For more photos, it takes her five to ten working days and sometimes when she needs

to put in more work, she works overtime. Why photography? “Every event or setting carries its own inspiration. But my aim is to get unique photos at the end of every event or setting.” She says. The one thing that sets this photographer apart from the rest is the fact that she is simple. Simplicity here means that she does not use other professional materials like filters or exaggerated backgrounds. Some of the challenges that Nicole faced while starting out include finances. “Getting my camera was a hustle. It took me almost a year to get my DSLR.” She says. Other challenges included getting and retaining clients. Also at times working with friends who always expect a huge discount was another challenge. Nicole thinks that photography still has a long way to go as the clients need to understand that it is a job like any other “We also need more photography schools to teach on how to improve photography skills. Lastly, parents need to give their children a chance to use their talents.

hen discussing abusive relationships, we tend to focus more on physical and verbal abuse, ignoring the fact that the issue of abuse in relationship goes far beyond what we can actually see or hear. Many a times when a couple gets into an argument, one of the parties retreats into the silent treatment cocoon which is actually one form of abuse in relationships. Because we are so used to relationship abuse being restricted to physical engagements, many of us assume we have never been in an abusive relationship. Newsflash; you do not have to beaten up by your better half to be considered abused. Even the most subtle means of anger expression can be a form of abuse so long as it adversely affects you either physically or in this case, mentally. The silent treatment is a passive aggressive defense mechanism for the more reticent members of the society, who stand no chance of emerging on top of a physical combat.

silenttreatment... Be warned though, still waters run deep and the silent treatment is a cruel strategy used by introverts to exercise calculated control over the party that is on the wrong. The silent treatment entails making the guilty party feel invisible, which is bound to eventually get frustrating for the person on the receiving end. In this manner, the person giving the silent treatment holds the recipient hostage emotionally because being ignored successively hurts more than being hit by a bus! If you are currently in the silent treatment dilemma in your relationship, here are a few tips to help you out of the rut. Avoid character assassination In simpler terms, avoid making direct attacks on a partner who is torturing you mentally as this will only rejuvenate their will to ignore you. Character assassination in this context means creating falsified accusations against the partner giving you the silent treatment just
because you know they will not respond, since they are not talking to you anyway. Maximize attention When one is utterly silent, we assume that they need some time to themselves to sort out whatever may be bothering them but sometimes, people go silent so as to be noticed, following the idiom ‘make them miss you with your absence’. Have you been paying your love interest the amount of attention they demand? If not, the silent treatment may be their way of asking for more. Do not over-apologize We have already mentioned that the silent treatment is a form of mental abuse and if you get your love interest accustomed to incessant apologies, they might develop the habit of ignoring you so as to receive ego massages whenever you try to apologize your way out of a rut. Apologize once or twice but do not be manipulated into becoming a people pleaser.

Dear Dr X,
I have been working with this guy for several months now and quite frankly, I think he has everything that I have been searching for in a man. We are good friends and at times he seems to be interested in me romantically as well. His feelings for me seem to be on and off however. At one time he is with me planning coffee dates while the next minute he is off talking to other girls in the office. We are not in an official relationship yet. My question is, should I be jealous and confront him?
-Anita
Dear Anita,
No, you should not be jealous. Just like you said, you only suspect that your colleague has feelings for you but he has not put it out there yet, so why waste your energy on jealousy? I do not blame you though, because nowadays, young people tend to jump into conclusions about feelings and romance only to end up disappointed when reality hits. Take time
to learn more about this guy. Maybe he is already in a relationship but can’t resist flirting with you. Remember, an invitation for a cup of coffee is not a marriage proposal. While at it remember not all office romances have a happy ending and things could go south should you try and fail. It would be wise to proceed with caution.

East Africa Community: 4,000 single tourist visas issued since February An estimated 4,000 Single Tourist Visas (STV) have been issued since its launch in February 2014 for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda representing a month-on-month increase to 305 from 156 visas sold last year. According to the Acting CEO Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) Susan Ongalo, an increased interest by members participating in regional forums with a view of partnering and working with other players in member countries to develop unique East
African products was a key factor for the improvement. “I came along with a delegation of 12 Kenyan tourism private sector players and county ministers for tourism who were keen to travel using their National Identification cards in order to better understand the process while cross-selling products within the region,” Ongalo said during a tourism forum in Kigali, Rwanda. A report by KTF noted that most of regional and international
travellers passing through Kenya are still unaware of the availability and process of using a Single Tourist Visa and National Identification for travel across the countries. The report further revealed that over 58.1 per cent of travellers had neither used nor interacted with someone who had used an STV while 47 per cent showed lack of familiarity on the existence of the STV. The forum came on the back of celebrating a year of operational
of the STV that has enhanced both easier and faster travel and trade between the three member countries. Visa allows foreigners to tour attraction site in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda at Sh 10,600 though the time when Tanzania and Burundi will be joining the industry is still unknown but the CEO Kenya Association of Hotel Mike Macharia says there were all positive signs.
Banks will remain profitable rest of 2015 Analysts say that Banks should be optimistic on their profit margins during the remaining half of 2015 despite the slow growth in the first half of the year. Cytonn Investment report revealed that during the first half of the year, banking sector recorded a slow growth at 8.3 per cent compared to 15.6 per cent over the same period last year. “There are concerns whether the banks will be able to maintain their profitability margins with the increase of the Central Bank Rate (CBR) to 11.5 percent, with the exception of minimal increases in nonperforming loans we do not think the banking businesses will be impacted significantly by the increases as historically, Kenyan banks have been fairly good at protecting their margins regardless of the rate environment,” the report stated. According to Investments Manager at Cytonn Investment Maurice Oduor, cost containment initiatives and increased use of

Construction of first power plant encounters delays Plans to build Kenya’s first coal-fired power plant in October have hit a snag, Francis Njogu, CEO of Amu Power Company has said. Amu, which is the consortium in charge of the project, is currently awaiting a government plan to resettle people on the coastal site so that the project can take off. The initiative, a Kenyan and Chinesebacked venture, plans to build the 1,000-megawatt (MW) plant as part of a move to improve the country’s electricity infrastructure, Reuters reports. The initiative will, in theory, bring down the cost of power for consumers while ensuring consistency in power supply. It is part of a plan to boost Kenya’s installed capacity to about 6,700 MW from the current 2,500 MW by 2017.
alternative channels are the main driver of banks in the remaining period of the year. “With devolution in Kenya, we will see banks become more aggressive in trying to capture the opportunities that exists at county
levels which will increase their customer base,” Oduor said. However the report ranked Equity Bank the best performing bank in the first half of 2015 while National Bank and Housing Finance ranked second and
lowest overall respectively. In July, the Monetary Policy Committee raised CBR by 1.5 per cent to 11.50 per cent and now the market anticipates another hike in interest rates ahead of their meeting next week.

growth. Governments in these countries are betting that faster 4G internet connections will give businesses a welcome productivity boost over the more expensive wired infrastructures that still exist in many countries, including Kenya. The upgrade is already making a difference to small businesses,

Cyber cafés in sub-Saharan Africa have seen the previous shift to 3G internet as an opportunity to provide faster connectivity to their customers. “Developing markets hardly have the time for a long deployment period and this approach promotes quick and affordable access to broadband

Uhuru must now suspend Waiguru With the Directorate of Criminal Investigations having confirmed that Sh791 million was lost in dubious procurement at the National Youth Service, there is no doubt there was corruption in the process. NYS is a department under Anne Waiguru’s Devolution ministry and the good lady must now take responsibility for the mess. That the opposition Cord has been vocal in calling for her sacking does not mean
President Uhuru Kenyatta should not force her to step aside like five of her colleagues who were forced out in March. Like suspended Lands CS Charity Ngilu said yesterday, failure to suspend Ms Waiguru makes it appear like the war on graft is selective. This is why Mr Kenyatta must do the only noble thing now; suspend Ms Waiguru. — Obuya Obuya, Nairobi

SPORTS BRIEFS
Kenya women volleyball team celebrate after beating Cameroon 3-1 to win gold medal in the ongoing Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville yesterday.
I can tame Morinho’s mischief, says rugby referee Nigel Owen Rugby referee Nigel Owens would “love” to officiate a football fixture and deal with the “unacceptable behaviour” of English Premier League coaches such as Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho”. Owens will officiate during the Rugby World Cup, which starts on Friday. In 2013-14, Chelsea boss Mourinho was twice sent to the stands by referees for complaining about decisions. “If you had coaches in rugby having a go at referees like Mourinho and some others do, they will be dealt with more firmly,” Owens said. Mourinho was fined £25,000 (250,000) by the Football Association in January for claiming there was a “campaign” to influence referees’ decisions against his Chelsea side. In March 2014 he was sent to the stands for protestations over Ramires red card in their match against Aston Villa. Five months earlier he suffered the same fate for persistently questioning referee Anthony Taylor’s decision against Cardiff.
More individuals to face graft charges as FIFA probe continues
More charges against “individuals and entities” are being considered as investigations into allegations of corruption within FIFA intensifies, US attorney general Loretta Lynch has said. In May, 14 FIFA officials and sports marketing executives were indicted in the US on racketeering charges involving more than $150m (Sh15b). “Substantial evidence” has been gathered so far, according to Lynch and property in the Alps have been seized in a separate Swiss investigation. The US authorities are working closely with their Swiss counterparts, and held a joint news conference in Zurich to provide updates on their respective investigations into world football’s governing body. “The scope of our investigation is not limited, and we are following the evidence where it leads,” said Lynch. In June, Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced he would resign less than a week after he was re-elected, saying “his mandate did not appear to be supported by everyone”.
Kenya registers dismal show in African Games tennis competition Kenya’s poor performance in continental tennis continued after top players were eliminated from the ongoing African Games in Congo, Brazzaville. Two time Kenya open champion Shufaa Changawa was eliminated by 11th Seed Nigerian Ifidzen who beat her 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s singles. Another disappointing performance for Kenya came from Kevin Cheruiyot who lost the men’s singles 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 to Ivorian Arnold Ikondo. But, Kenya’s pair Faizal Khan and Sheila Kotecha, who was drafted back to the team after top seed Ishmael Changawa pulled out of the squad before the championship, were to meet second seeded Nigerians Wisdom/George Darko in today’s quarter-final tie. Karolyn Sandra Judy Nkatha also progressed to the quarters and will play third seed Nigerians Dona/ Moura.
Kenya pip Cameroon to clinch gold in volleyball
Kenya extended her dominance in the Africa women’s volleyball after the junior national team won the country’s third gold in African Games in Congo, Brazzaville yesterday. Kenya once more proved their consistency and won the gold after they cruised past Cameroon 3-1 (15-25, 25-14, 25-15, and 25-19) in the final at Henry Elende Hall in Brazzaville. This came as a surprise to the junior team who performed beyond expectation, even surpassing the senior team that missed this medal four years ago, interestingly to the same Cameroonian side in Maputo, Mozambique. This was a third major title for
volleyball coming barely three month after they won a record ninth title of the African Nations champions followed by a historic win at the FIVB world Grand Prix in Australia. The first team was involved in the FIVB World Cup. This was a revenge for Kenyan side that lost 2-3 to Cameron at the group stages Egypt claimed the Bronze medals after they beat Seychelles 3-0 (2517, 25-6, 25-15) in the third place match. After the final, CAVB President Amr Elwani accompanied by Congo VB Fed President Jean Claude Mopita honoured the top 3 teams in presence of the competition Control Committee.
Kenya overcame the shaky start and rebounded from a set behind to win a thrilling encounter against Cameroon in a final that lasted an hour and 27 minutes. Cameroon started the match as the better side using the spikes of Nana Tchoudjang and Theorine Aboa and succeeded to lead steadily until they won the first set 25-15, but the second set was completely different as the Kenyan side came back aggressively with their better reception and digging to lead 8-3 and 16-7 in the first and second technical timeouts (TTOs). Kenya then employed solid blocks which stopped Cameroon to draw 1-1 after winning the set 25-14. The Kenyan maintained their lead
throughout the third set with the quick attacks led by centre blockers turned attackers Edith Wisa and Joan Chelegat. Despite changes by Cameroonian in the third set, Kenya won the subsequent set 2515 and lead 2-1 before grabbing the fourth set 25-19 Leonida Kasaya scored a massive 25 points for the new African champions while Edith Wisa contributed five points out Kenya’s 14 from blocks to finish top in the individual blocking category. Wisa who only trained for a week with the team was also the best scorer (blocks) in their semi-final match against Egypt where she managed seven points.
Duncan finally cleared for EA Classic Safari
CHAMPION: Ian Duncan with his co-driver celebrates their 2013 East Africa Safari classic rally. He has been cleared to defend his title in this year’s race in November.
2013 Kenya Airways Safari Classic winner Ian Duncan has finally been cleared to run this year’s November 19 East Africa classic motor race. Duncan participation raised issues with his Ford Capri Piranha V8 which won the last edition held in 2013 with the organisers arguing that there has been a change in the technical regulations for the Safari Classic with an adherence to Appendix K of the FIA that covers all internationally recognised events for classic cars. This ‘technically’ barred his South Africanbuilt Capri machine with an American V8 engine on internationally homologation ground. After protracted talks to try and resolve the problem, it was suggested that Duncan could run a car based on the Ford Capri RS3100 powered by the 3,098cc V6 Essex engine. The Safari organisers recently flew out their
chief scrutineer Geoff Doe and competitor relations officer Tim Ashton to liaise with Duncan and see what could be done. The result was a list of bodywork dispensations that were needed to make this idea viable. They were circulated to all the other competitors who were invited to dissent and given14 days in which to do so. With the period now expired and no adverse comments, Duncan has a clear route to ensure he will be on the start line in November. The final hurdle for the team will be when Geoff Doe and the scrutineering team inspects the Capri – along with all the other rally cars – in few days before the rally to ensure it meets both the regulations and all recommendations. On each side, there is a good feeling that East Africa’s most famous and respected rally driver will once again be taking part in the Safari Classic.
Injured Sergio Aguero to miss Juventus visit Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will miss today’s Champions League opener against Juventus at Etihad Stadium because of a knee injury. Aguero, 27, was hurt during City’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday. Winger Raheem Sterling has recovered from a hamstring problem, while David Silva is available after ankle trouble. “I hope Aguero will be OK for the weekend but we must wait to see the result of the scans,” said manager Manuel Pellegrini. City have won their opening five Premier League games to open up a four-point lead at the top of the table.
Captain Vincent Kompany wants the team to transform their domestic form to the Champions League stage. City, who are also in the same group as Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach, reached the last-16 stage last season before losing 3-1 on aggregate to Barcelona. “It cannot be what it was in the previous years,” said Kompany. “This year has to be better. We have been looking forward to the start of the competition since the disappointing game in Barcelona.” Juventus have started badly this season, earning one point from the opening
three Serie A games. Captain Gianluigi Buffon believes the game with City provides the champions of Italy with a perfect opportunity to kick-start their season. “We can’t be happy with what has happened so far but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves, far from it,” said the 37-year-old 2006 World Cup winner. “There is a huge amount of enthusiasm for this game. Manchester City are one of the potential winners of the competition, so it is a really good thing for us to start our Champions League games with such a tough test.”
DOWN AND OUT: Manchester City team doctors attend to striker Sergio Aguero after picking an injury in last Saturday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace. Aguero will miss today’s Champions League opener against Juventus at the Etihad stadium.
Gor, AFC fined over mashemeji derby chaos AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia financial trouble is expected to continue after they were slapped with a combined Sh1 million fine by the Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee. This comes following the August 23 abandoned match between the two sides. Ingwe will bear the brunt with the fine coming at a tie the cub has been chased away from their training venue after they failed to pay the accrued balance. K’Ogalo, though the beneficiary of the chaos after they were awarded three points following the abandonment, were fined the biggest portion, Sh600,000 with Ingwe instructed to pay the other Sh400,000 even as IDCC hope the punishment will help the two clubs control their fans and enhance security in future matches. IDCC also directed the Kenyan Premier League to play a bigger oversight role on security matters during league matches, including electronic ticketing
and recommended that matches should be called off once a serious breach of security has occurred. The hugely anticipated match between the two traditional rivals was abandoned in the 64th minute half after AFC Leopard fans threw stones onto the pitch when Gor Mahia were awarded a penalty. Chaos ensued and the match was eventually abandoned and subsequently awarded to Gor Mahia on a 2-0 result by the KPL. The league body then took the case to IDCC accusing the two clubs and their set of supporters of contravening rules of the game. “Having considered all relevant factors and in the exercise of our powers under Rule 7.8 of the Rules, we apportion liability between the first respondent (Gor Mahia) and second respondent (AFC Leopards) at 60%:40% with the fine assessed at KSh1,000,000,” read part of the statement posted on the KPL official website.
This fine should be paid within 60 (Sixty) days from the date hereof,” IDCC, chaired by Prof Migai Akech, said in its ruling released on Monday. IDCC decision to hand Gor the hefty fine however raises eyebrows even after the admitted in their ruling that Leopards were responsible for the abandonment of the match. “It’s clear (AFC Leopards) fans made it impossible for the penalty to be taken. The referee had already made a call for the penalty and could not have continued with the match unless the penalty was taken.” “From an assessment of the evidence and the submissions, a lot of the unfortunate events that happened on that day would have been avoided had proper security arrangements been put in place and the things agreed to be done, Gor Mahia failed to print enough tickets and failed to adhere to the safety and security guidelines that had been agreed upon,” IDCC said.

Hammers send Toons to bottom
AND IT’S A GOAL: West Ham striker Dimitri Payet celebrates scoring his first goal against Newcastle last night. The Hammers condemned the Toons to the bottom of EPL standings with a 2-0 beating.
W
est Ham moved up to fifth in the Premier League as two Dimitri Payet goals sent Newcastle bottom. Payet gave the hosts an early lead when he curled the ball past Tim Krul from the edge of the area after Mark Noble’s low cross from the left wing. The Frenchman grabbed his second with a rebound after Victor Moses had hit the crossbar following a fine run. Newcastle who have not scored since the opening day of the season in a run that stretches for 402 minutes, never looked likely to end that drought at Upton Park as they struggled in attack. Newcastle have now won only three of 24 Premier League matches in 2015 and it was a routine win for West Ham, who picked up their first home league victory of the season. Sloppy in possession and unimaginative in attack, the visitors offered little to please the fans who made the long journey from the north east. Traffic chaos in east London meant the Newcastle players had to walk the last mile to the stadium - and within eight minutes they were behind. It was a fine finish from Payet, but he was allowed too much time and space on the edge of the penalty area to shoot at goal unchallenged.
