Schools indefinitely closed as strike bites
A number of schools across the country have now been closed indefinitely following the ongoing teachers strike. In some schools, however, only the candidates awaiting their national exams were left to continue with preparations. This follows Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi’s statement that no change of schedule on the national exams. The Kenya National Union of TeachersKnut on its part says it will continue to fight unwaveringly for the rights of teachers as mandated by the law and in pursuit of the indivisible rights of workers. The teachers’ union reiterated its commitment to abide by the court ruling but, says teachers will not resume duties until the court ruling expected next week. In a statement sent to newsrooms this morning, Knut stated it will refrain from protests as ordered by Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Nelson Abuotha. Knut has, however, accused the government of ignoring its members’ plight even as the strike bites. “Since we called the national teachers’ strike three weeks ago, we have noted with grave concern an orchestrated wave of lies, misinformation, falsehoods and half-truths by the government and its agencies, whose overall intention is to demean teachers and incite the public against them,” said Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion in

a statement. President Uhuru Kenyatta last week ruled out implementing the teachers’ salary increase as was awarded by the courts, but Sossion believes the President was wrongly informed. “We are appalled by the lies and innuendos tabled to the Head of State and which culminated in the unfortunate statement he made on Friday, on September 11,” he added. KNUT says the salary award given by the Industrial Court of between 50 – 60 per cent was based on proposals presented to the Industrial Court by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and was never its creation, adding that the union had asked for a 300 per cent pay rise, but the Industrial
High Court directs merger of Ngilu, Kamau cases The high Court in Nairobi has today directed that the cases challenging the prosecution of suspended Cabinet Secretaries Charity Ngilu (Lands) and Micheal Kamau (Transport) be merged for a hearing and determination. Both Ngilu and Kamau are challenging their prosecution by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations of involvement in corruption. A three judge bench which was formed by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga will sit on October 22, 2015 to hear and determine the application. Justices George Odunga, Mumbi Ngugi and Joseph Onguto said the two applications “raise similar issues” and it would be appropriate to have the suits heard by the same bench. “The matters for determination raised in the petitions revolve around ‘the integrity and legality of EACC in prosecuting the cases,” they said. Following the filing of the case in the High Court by Kamau, the proceedings that were being conducted in the anti-corruption magistrate’s court have since been suspended until the hearing and determination of the application before the High Court. Ngilu through lawyer Kioko Kilukumi wants the High Court to declare that the Director of Public Prosecutions had abdicated his constitutional duty, which had led to her prosecution

unprocedurally. If the judges find that constitutional issues raised on the integrity of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are valid, the cases against the two Cabinet Secretaries could be quashed. The criminal case against Ngilu was also suspended after she moved to the High Court. She was being prosecuted over her alleged role in blocking investigators in the Sh8 billion Karen land scam.

Court was persuaded by the submission by TSC and, ruled that the teachers be given the 50 – 60 per cent. “In effect, the union only got 16-20 per cent of the request it had submitted to the court. Clearly, this was massive climb-down, but we accepted it on the spirt of give-and-take that defines industrial relations,” he stated. “We will not relent in pursuit of what is rightfully ours. The courts spoke when they awarded the 50-60 per cent increase based on proposals by TSC. We will not take the lies kindly. Neither will be intimidated by anyone, in particular, those who disobey court orders.”
Senators have now asked the government to drop its hardline position on the teachers’ strike and instead urged for dialogue to resolve the impasse. While debating a House Business Adjournment motion filed by Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula yesterday, the senators told the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to stop issuing threats to the striking tutors, saying it will not solve the matter. The senators were unanimous that the 50-60 per cent pay increment demanded by teachers is tenable, saying the country has enough resources which can be channeled towards paying teachers. They urged the government to embrace dialogue and drop their hardline stand on the matter. “Teachers are right on this matter since it is the court that awarded them the pay increase, the government should therefore not adopt ‘can’t pay, won’t pay attitude,” said Wetang’ula. The Bungoma senator told TSC to desist from threatening teachers who are only demanding their rights as awarded by the courts. Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr called for the sacking of TSC Chairperson Lydia Nzomo, saying she has failed to advise the President appropriately on the matters of teachers. TSC had sent “show cause why” letters to 5,000 for failing to manage their teachers during the ongoing strike over pay dispute. The commission said it had written warning letters to 5,000 head teachers, deputy head teachers and other senior teachers asking them to explain why they had failed to follow its instructions on how to handle the strike.
I have Nothing personal against CS Waiguru: Raila Cord leader Raila Odinga says he has nothing personal against Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru who is at the centre of a scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS). Speaking during a breakfast meeting with editors on Wednesday morning, Raila said his principal concern was accountability for the public cash lost through the scandal. He insisted that Waiguru as the CS in charge of the NYS project should take full responsibility in accounting for the money lost. “The Cabinet Secretary and I have nothing personal. Madam Anne Waiguru was involved in a cover up and conspiracy to subvert the course of justice. Then she came and stood before the media and said with a straight face that no money was lost. The Director of Criminal Investigations has since confirmed that indeed colossal sum of money was lost,” he said. The Cord leader dared Waiguru
to sue him, saying it will give her a chance to explain to Kenyans her alleged role in the scandal that has cost tax payers hundreds of millions of shillings. The question then is, what was her interest in misleading the Kenyan public; What is the relationship between the Cabinet Secretary and these NYS deals? What is her relationship with the culprits? As the Cabinet Secretary, she appointed Adan Harakhe as NYS deputy director general then took authority to incur expenses from the Director Nelson Githinji,” he stated. Raila said there is more than meet the eye in the way in which the cash loss is being handled. “That AIE (Authority to Incur Expenditure) is what was used to steal the money. Is this an innocent coincidence? Look at it this way, she says that she nipped it in the bud, she informed the CID to come and
investigate. The CID have come and investigated. If thieves come into your house and have stolen property and you go to the police and report the theft, the police carry out investigations and arrest the thief,” he stated. He indicated that once the funds were confirmed to be missing, the police should have taken over by arresting and charging the culprits instead of reporting back to the Devolution CS. “Do the police bring the thief back to you or even the report? They take the thief to court and charge them. Why did the CID take the report back to Waiguru? Why did they not arrest the culprits and take them to court and charge them? Ask yourself. It was not the CID reporting the theft. It was the same Waiguru who was calling the media to say these are the steps we have taken at a time when these people should have already been in court,” he stated.

Survey: Black is colour of confidence People who wear black clothing exhume an air of confidence, according to a study dubbed “The Perception of Colour”. Researchers who carried out the study admitted that the colour black, has often been associated with death, gloom, and sadness. However, they also said it is “a powerful performer in the eyes of the public, who see it as a serious, reliable and solid player, ideal for interviews and first dates.” In a survey that drew conclusions from hundreds of people from different social and economic backgrounds, Buy Shirts Online, a UK –based clothing company discovered that a majority of people believe that black is the colour of confidence. In fact, 56 per cent of respondents favoured black as a colour of confidence. “Split by gender, 48 per cent of women and 64 per cent of men
favoured it,” said an excerpt from the study. The researchers assert that black is the ideal colour for creating a good first impression in situations where professionalism is mandatory. Separate studies have revealed that different African cultures prefer to have a variety of colours with the most famous tribes opting for colours that tend to clash. Brown, orange, yellow green and red have been cited as colours prevalent in both West and East Africa. From the Maasai shuka to the Nigerian and Ghanaian garb, it has been revealed that, though tastes may vary across the continent, Africans are often associated with theatrical and sometimes flamboyant colour choices. Nonetheless, black remains a powerful yet sometimes conservative choice for those in suits and dresses, the study affirms.
Police dismiss report on forced disappearances Police Spokesman Charles Owino has dismissed a report by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights detailing accusations of executions and forced disappearance of terror suspects as “cheap propaganda.” Owino denies police have executed 25 terror suspects and forced hundreds of others to disappear, saying those reported missing are likely in Somalia where they went to join al Shabaab. “What surprises me is that the government agents and the general public that are getting killed seem not to get rights on the eyes of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights,” he pointed out. “The government has all the machinery… it is not real that people would be killed in a military camp and then buried behind the camp in a shallow grave. If truly the military has killed, they have the capacity to hide you (not in a shallow grave)” He termed the accusations as propaganda designed by people who are “agents of the hand grenades, bombing and killings in Nairobi and the country, who has seen it has come down. They want the security agencies to be under pressure and relax on what they are doing.” He was responding to accusations contained in a damning report released by the commission on Tuesday, that heavily indicts the police of extra judicial killings, torture and forced disappearance during the renewed war on terrorism launched soon after the 2013 Westgate Shopping Mall attack. Following the government amnesty on terror suspects, Owino said 200

youths who had joined al-Shabaab have since returned to the country and are currently undergoing rehabilitation. He denied allegations that the rights commission had been denied access to some police stations during their investigations saying if true, they should have reported to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). “It also depends on how you went to a police station; there are procedures that should be followed,” he told Capital FM News. “Let them mention the specific station they were denied access to.” According to KNCHR, police were a major barrier during their investigations more so when they wanted to establish the whereabouts of terror suspects
allegedly arrested by the officers. The report details various counts of alleged victims of police brutality who were either linked to terror or were merely relatives to terror suspects. It points out that some were picked by security officers and their whereabouts is yet to be known. “The commission is concerned that the ongoing crackdown continues to disproportionately target certain groups of people particularly ethnic Somalis and members of the Muslim faith in the coastal region,” it noted. “The profiling of people along ethnic or religious lines constitute discrimination and is therefore unconstitutional and against international norms.” The report titled ‘The Error Of Fighting Terror With Terror’ lists
25 extra judicial killings and 81 forced disappearances, various forms police have allegedly used to torture their victims. It includes water boarding, electric shocks, genital mutilation, exposure to extreme cold or heat, hanging on trees, mock executions and exposure to stinging by ants in the wild. The report that documented 120 cases of alleged abuses states that there exist torture chambers in military camps in Wajir, Mandera and Lamu where most suspects were tortured. More on this story at

Three arrested on terror suspicion Three women were yesterday arrested in Mtwapa on their way to Garissa with an assortment of gadgets police believe were to aid in a terror attack. Two of the suspects are girls aged between 15 and 18 years and police say were to cross to Somali to join Al Shabaab as “jihadist brides”. They were arrested in a bus that was destined for Garissa. Their bag which was confiscated by the police contained laptops, a surveillance pen, military boots and satellite phones. Other gadgets the police confiscated from the suspects were a laptop charger, external hard disk and ear phones used by security personnel.

‘700 million’ malaria cases stopped in Africa Nearly 700 million cases of malaria have been prevented in Africa as a result of concerted efforts to tackle the disease since 2000, a study shows. The report published in the journal Nature showed that overall the number of infections fell by 50 per cent across the continent. Bed nets were responsible for the vast majority of the decrease. There have also been calls to maintain funding to ensure the progress is not undone. Meanwhile, a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the charity Unicef say malaria death rates have fallen 60 per cent globally since 2000 and more than six million lives have been saved. The report said 13 countries that had malaria in the year 2000 reported no cases in 2014 while a further six countries had fewer than ten cases.
Interim leaders detained in Burkina Faso Burkina Faso interim leaders have been detained by guards supporting ousted President Blaise Compaore. President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida were detained at a cabinet meeting at the presidential palace in the capital, Ouagadougou. The detention comes two days after a commission recommended the disbanding of the presidential guard (RSP). Shots have been fired to disperse hundreds of protesters near the palace, where the detainees remain. No injuries have been reported, but there is said to be an air of panic in the capital with shops shutting early and many people heading home.
Rising S. Sudan aid workers attack worrying Humanitarian groups say the number of attacks on aid workers in South Sudan is increasing significantly. The NGO Forum said there had been nearly 40 robberies at aid compounds in the past three months. Last week, an aid worker was killed during a robbery in the South Sudanese capital, Juba. Two female aid workers are reported to have been robbed and raped earlier this month. About 30 aid workers are reported to have been killed since civil war broke out in the country nearly two years ago.
Encourage public participation, governors told Constitution Implementation Commission (CIC) chairman Charles Nyachae has urged county governments to encourage public participation in their budget preparations for a successful implementation of devolution. He said public participation in county budgets is a constitutional right which governors should not deny residents, claiming that some county chiefs do not encourage public partici-
pation during their budget preparations. “Let county governments empower people first through civic education before allowing them to fully participate in the preparation of county budgets,” said Nyachae. “People need to own the projects going on in the counties. That is the spirit of devolution. Budget preparation should not be an affair of the governor only,” he added.
Speaking during the congress of constitutional commissions in Uasin Gishu yesterday, Nyachae said devolution has taken off very well despite teething problems. “We cannot revert devolution to the National government at this time, the current challenges can be surmounted,” he said. “There are people who have seen a tarmac road for the first time since independence, others have
never been to a wellequipped hospitals which they can now easily access, and these are some of the gains”. The CIC boss urged leaders to desist from turning to the media to resolve devolution challenges and instead told them to resort to the Constitution. “The Constitution has all the answers to the problems we are facing, going to the media to make unnecessary remarks will not
help us,” said Nyachae. He also urged Kenyans to jealously guard devolution and ask their leaders hard questions on issues county expenditure. “Devolution is for you people, tell your leaders that you demand the best from them in terms of service delivery,” said Nyachae. Nyachae said the Constitution commissions have performed well in executing their duty and meeting deadlines.
UK troops to be deployed in S. Sudan for peacekeeping The UK is to devote more troops to UN peacekeeping, with personnel being sent to South Sudan, the BBC reports. UK Prime Minister David Cameron will detail the move at a summit in New York this month. The extra troops will be deployed to the world’s newest country, where thousands have been killed and millions displaced amid fighting between government troops and rebels. The mission will be “significant” and involve boots on the ground, the BBC further says. Britain has long been a large financial contributor to UN peacekeeping missions and is the fifth highest provider of funds. But its troop commitment has been relatively small, focused mainly on 250 soldiers based in Cyprus who wear the distinctive blue berets of the UN. The size of the British contingent in South Sudan is not yet known, but is expected to go beyond offering logistical support and an airlift capability, and will be a much tougher challenge. Both sides in the South Sudan conflict last month signed a peace deal, which was thought would bring

to an end 20 months of conflict, but fighting has continued. Conflict between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar has forced more than 2.2 million people from their homes in the State, which broke away from Sudan in 2011. At least seven ceasefires have been signed and broken within days.
Strike could lead to crimes, warns ex-student leader A former student leader has called on the government to seal loopholes for corruption in order to get money to pay teachers. Former Rongo university student leader Zack Babel (pictured) says the current stalemate on teachers’ strike is negatively impacting on students who are going to sit for the national exams next month. “There is money in this country that can easily meet the demand of teachers, the problem is
corruption,” he argued. He expressed fear that the continual stay of pupils at home may lure them to criminal activities due to idleness. “The level of crime might just go up in the society because we have many students who have nothing to do,” he told X News.
The US administration has been said for months that one way for European Union nations to address longstanding criticisms from Washington about inadequate defence spending would be to commit to more UN missions. Meanwhile, Russia and Angola have opposed moves at the UN Security Council to impose
sanctions on a South Sudan general and a rebel commander, diplomats say. The US had proposed a travel ban and asset freeze on army chief Paul Malong and rebel general Johnson Olony for continuing to fuel conflict in South Sudan. But Russian ambassador to the UN said sanctions might aggravate the situation.

Raila said the Government had managed the teachers’ strike, which is in the third week poorly and the labour protests could worsen in coming days should trade unions representing other public servants make good their threat and join in the strike. The Orange Democratic Movement party leader cautioned that chest thumping will not resolve anything and instead asked the Jubilee government to embrace dialogue to resolve the crisis that has shut down the public education system.

The average lending rate stood at 15. 75 percent at the end of July compared to 15.26 percent in May, according to newly released Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) data. This means the cost of loans rose by an average of 0.5 percentage points in two months. The lenders said the repricing does not affect all clients, but is mainly targeted at new borrowers as well as risky borrowers who took loans recently on terms that allows variation of interest rates.

They said what the former councillors were asking for was not much and they should be given the money to begin living respectable lives. “It is important that we look into the welfare of our past leaders. HF addresses unemployment, construction sector dilemma
Kenya’s construction industry is suffering from a lack of skilled personnel, recent reports have revealed. Despite an upsurge of development projects including the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway, Konza Tech City and JKIA Terminal 1, youth unemployment is at an all-time high with nearly45 per cent of the population lacking jobs. The construction sector has seen its crises worsen as reports reveal a mismatch between the supply and demand of skilled artisans such as masons, welders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and painters. The Foundation has therefore confirmed that it will tackle the problem through an initiative dubbed the“Army of One Million
Artisans” over the coming years. The group is seeking partners to help reconstitute training courses around a competency-based education and training approach. “Until this is done, Kenya’s development cannot and will not accelerate to its potential,” the group said in a statement. The integrated property and financial solutions provider, through its subsidiary, HF Development and Investment Limited (HFDI) is also set to construct 1,272 housing units in Nairobi’s Komarock area. The project christened, Komarock 5C, will consist of 2 and 3 bedroom housing units and will sit on a 23.5 acre piece of land of which 5 acres will be set aside for a public school. The project will be developed in
three phases and construction of the apartments will take 24 months per phase. Komarock 5C is HF Group’s largest housing project in over 30 years and is the second largest housing project to be undertaken in Nairobi in the last 10 years, after Nyayo estate in Embakasi. HF Group’s Chairman, Mr. Steve Mainda said the Komarock 5C project will create at least 1,500 direct jobs for youth during the development period. “The Komarock 5C project is expected to have a larger impact on the community through job creation and we expect many more youth to benefit from the project indirectly through supply of various products and services,” said Mainda.

Coldwell Banker, owned by Realogy Holdings Corporation, will be partnering with existing Kenyan real estate agencies to offer them a brand, technological capabilities, and marketing expertise of a new order in the local market. “We are at a point where people in Kenya know exactly what they want from their homes, and we, at Coldwell Banker, are set to mobilize the local market to ensure that their desires are met,” said Ms. Callaway. Realogy, a global leader in real estate franchising, brokerage, and relocation services is the only residential real estate franchise or brokerage company on the list, affirming its position as the world leader in its field. INDUSTRY Kenya has unveiled its first-ever blueprint to revive the manufacturing and industrial exports sector, which already employs tens of thousands of Kenyans, according to the country’s High Commission. The decade-long plan, dubbed Kenya’s Industrial Transformation Programme (KITP), will look beyond importsubstitution and export-led policy regimes to develop its industries in a
market in the recent past include General Electric, Facebook, Google, American Express and Wal-mart, which came in through its Game franchise. “The local market has become far richer and more diverse in recent years, making for a different level of service requirement by both buyers and sellers in matching the right consumers and the right properties,” said Ms. Callaway. According to her, sellers will also gain exposure to worldwide home buyers who are interested in relocation, as well as domestic clients. “Our belief is that the best real estate companies have a culture of collaboration where everybody respects the value each brings to the table in what may be possibly one of the most significant transaction our customers have in their lifetime.” She concluded.

Tourism board takes Kenya to West Africa, the UAE The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has intensified its marketing efforts in the West African region and parts of United Arabs Emirates as part of boards marketing strategy to focus on Africa and other growing markets. According to KTB, their officials are in West Africa on a joint programme with Kenya Airways and Wakanow, one of the West Africa’s largest online tour operators in Europe and Middle East. Ghana Tourism Authority Ag. CEO Charles Bonsu has welcomed the move by both government agencies sighting that Ghana has a lot to learn from Kenya and vice versa as this will create mutual beneficial alliances. “The shared lessons will see tourism grow in Africa, and we must admit that Kenya has excelled especially in managing their key tourism products like Wildlife as well as service delivery” Bonsu said. “The ease of travel facilitated by the existing Visa free rule and direct flight by Kenya Airways are already advantages that the two countries can take leverage to increase traffic,” he added. Abieku Santana, a tourism enthusiast and a friend of Kenya recommended Kenya for leading in nurturing tourism as a key economic activity that has improved the living standards of citizens as well as encouraging other African countries to follow the suit. This is envisaged to both enhance awareness of Kenya as a destination of choice for West Africa as well as growing the partnership between KT, KQ and Wakanow.
Gov’t to create over 400,000 jobs via export sector bid to stimulate Kenya’s ambitions as Africa’s next industrial power. Kenya is already East Africa’s “Silicon Savannah”, leading the region in the tech sector. However, it falls behind several powerhouses in the field of industry. The plan now aims at growing the manufacturing sector to levels above 15 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current 11 per cent
over the past decade. The manufacturing sector already employs an estimated 200,000 people directly. A move like this would see employment numbers rise to unprecedented levels, especially at a time when the demand for skilled labour is on the rise. According to Industrialisation CS Adan Mohamed, Kenya has identified 10 opportunities within
the key strategies that will increase manufacturing sector jobs to an additional 435,000 in the next five years and add Sh200 billion to Sh300 billion to the GDP. “As an emerging economy, moving from agriculture based, low income economy to an industrial, middle income economy, it is paramount that the manufacturing share to GDP increases,” Mohamed said.
Under the plan, Kenya will build and innovate on its export engines and continue to support them. “To boost production and exports, Kenya will work to ease regulations on the sale of the exports while looking to attract a 50 to 100 per cent price premium by marketing tea and coffee as a ‘Made in Kenya’ brand internationally,” the Cabinet Secretary said. Mugo Wa Wairimu is free
So the authorities finally caught up with him last week in limuru but his stay with them was short-lived. This week, the fake gynecologist and alleged rapist had the last laugh when police released him from custody quoting lack of evidence. While the video footage provided as evidence for his rape sessions may not be incriminating enough for the authorities to take action on him, we still wonder why he is not facing other charges such as running unlicensed clinics and practicing medicine without a license. This story is still keeping KOT and other platforms busy.
No cheque no chalk
Meanwhile, teachers in public schools are almost three weeks into their strike demanding for pay increase as per an existing court order, but there seems to be no hope for either teachers or students after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the government has no money to implement the teacher’s salary increase in compliance with the Industrial Court’s order. Of course everyone from the teaching and opposition fraternity came out guns blazing at the President but not one Caroline Mutoko, who instead, reprimanded Kenyans for directing their wrath towards the President while in her view, the crisis can only be blamed on a failing economy. Today the standoff continues with Senators and Governors finally agreeing to a pay cut. Who will blink first?

Just hours after Justin Bieber declared that he was over Selena Gomez, single and ready to date again, Selena Gomez has now said that she will forever love Justin Bieber. Still, despite all the intense drama that came with S e l e n a , she doesn’t quite rule out the possibility of one day rekindling the romance. “I don’t know!” she laughs, when asked point-blank if she and Justin would ever get back together.

veryone has at one point or another come across a post on Facebook that got them wishing for a button other than ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on their timeline because they didn’t exactly like what the post was about and no amount of words could really describe how they felt about the post. In this case a dislike button would come in handy right? Well, you asked for it, and you got it! Okay, not exactly a dislike button but it is still something worth looking forward to. In response to millions of request for Facebook to add a button that expresses feelings other than “like” on a post, Mark Zuckerberg announced that in fact, his team of geeks has been working towards fulfilling the overwhelming request by Facebook users, having already developed a button that is currently in the trial stage. Here is the catch; the new button is not meant to dislike posts or comments, but rather to express empathy on sad

posts such as those about deaths or disasters. There you have it…a solution to the disturbing and annoying trend of people liking posts about deaths which can only be described as creepy. When asked why Facebook did not develop a simple dislike button instead, Zuckerberg maintains that a dislike button would hold no social value, with the explanation that such a button would most likely be misused to down vote posts leading to a crisis such as the trolling mess undergone recently by Reddit as a result of users having the option of a disdain button. We actually concur with Zuckerberg. We live in an age marred by global cyber bullying and by introducing a dislike button for posts, Facebook would only be abetting this virtual crime by providing a means of participation in just one click. Imagine putting up your best photo on your Facebook timeline only to receive notifications that most of your friends dislike the photo!
Needless to say, cases of suicide especially among teenagers who are constantly trying to establish relevance through social media would rocket to the sky and according to the Facebook CEO, this is not the kind of community that Facebook seeks to create. In terms of implementation, many strategies have been suggested to the social media giant with the ideas of either giving users the option of embedding the sympathy button in sad posts or prompting the button to pop up when keywords denoting tragedy are used standing out. While at it, the Facebook community has implored Zuckerberg to add several other buttons to the Facebook system such as those telling off the annoying Candy Crush requesters on Facebook, couples addicted to FDA (Facebook Display of Affection) or those who just won’t quit uploading baby photos; babies can only appear cute for so long!

The meeting, which culminated into a heated debate, was attended by both the school officials and the students. According to Mabonga Walter who is one of the presidential candidates, the administration had not conducted satisfactory voter education on the new voting system hence the low voter turn out. The voting was a pre determinant of whether or not the amendment would be passed. Other student leader aspirants argued that it was easy to manipulate results if people voted online. Lang’at Cheborge Emmanuel 25, is all about championing the youth agenda in Kenya. He currently is the captain for Youth Senate Kericho where he has made youth empowerment his obligation earning him the nickname ‘youth senator’. What does your job entail? As executive director of my organization my focus is on ensuring the youth of Kericho County and Kenya at large are enlightened. My inspiration stems from fact that a better youth today is a better and stronger tomorrow. How many hours do you work in a day? I am an early bird, usually up by 5 o’clock. I approximately work for about 10 to 11 hours a day. What qualifications do you need for your job? I have a background in ICT and currently pursuing an MBA from the Maseno University majoring in Strategic Management, but for this kind of task one will need passion and zeal above all. Was this your dream career? Interesting question, I must admit, any way I have always wanted to see a the people of Kenya living to their fullest with equity of resources observed to all, in my capacity as
9
a youth I want to see all youth have an equal playing field. So yes, I am in the right place. How did you start out? I was recruited by Youth Senate Kenya where we have 47 youth representatives from all the Counties in Kenya and from then it has been mind-blowing championing for my ilk. What achievements have you had so far? My greatest achievement so far is being able to guide 30 youths from across the County of Kericho to be able to register companies and successfully bidding for government tenders. Any challenges you have experienced so far? Yeees!! From time to time and they come in different designs and shapes, I choose to derive strength from them but not complaining about them and devising different techniques to solve them. Many people still do not believe youth
can but we can and will prove them wrong. Does your job interfere with your social life? No it does not, I try to have my Sunday afternoons for family and friends. What is the best part of your job? Meeting new people, making new friends and networks and above all seeing the lives of those I have interacted with change. What is the worst part of your job? Interacting with unresponsive and violent audiences. Very Bad experience. Any advice for the youth? Just like Graca Machel said “power is not given to young people. You need to take it. Find mentors willing to guide you. Make yourself noticed and respected”

BizGadget: LG Smartwatches solid but steep in price As the adoption of wearable technology grows, and smart watches gradually climb to become the center of digital universe, LG has made a rapid progress that has made it possible for consumers to experience the next step in technological integration. Smart watches are fast making wearable technology a mainstream. And so to win over competition, according to experts, LG placed a wellplanned strategy for the delivery of exceptional product quality
and performance as well as the creation of the most delightful user experience Smart watch. There is no better proof of that than LG’s release of four different smartwatch models in less than 12 months proving to be a consistent innovator in wearable technology, thanks to its Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The LG smart watch family comprise the G watch, G watch R, Watch Urbane and Watch Urbane LTE that brings with them fashion, style, and elegance together in a complete package, making a

The Watch Urbane LTE being the latest in a series of LG Smartwatches, marks the start of a transformation with wearable technology, The Watch Urbane LTE runs on LG’s own software and is capable of operating without a paired smartphone, giving users unparalleled solutions.
Uchumi will be stable in 100 days, says new CEO “Uchumi will be stable in the next 100 days” the retailer’s new CEO Dr Julius Kipng’etich has assured shareholders and members of the public. Kipng’etich, who has held the position for barely a month, says during this period, his management team will focus on ensuring the business is running well. An ongoing reassessment of its current situation may result in the closure or relocation of some supermarkets. “I know there are places where the shops are not in the right places and those are very easy to correct because we are just moving into new rental places. We are looking at Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru and Mombasa,” Kipng’etich announced, implying that Nairobi’ branches would remain untouched. The CEO blamed the retailer’s sub-standard performance on poor governance and inefficient strategies. “If you look at all the cycles which Uchumi has suffered from, it’s all about governance. I mean, you buy goods, you put a mark up and you sell, as simple as that. So, a supermarket should never make a loss. The reason it makes losses is either somebody never did the calculations right, poor management skills, or you stole.
BIZ BRIEFS Africa at risk of facing Greece-like crisis, experts warn
Africa is at risk of facing a catastrophe that mirrors the current financial crisis affecting Greece. Money markets analysts have warned that the continent’s varied economies have seen the value of their currencies sink and many African states that have borrowed heavily in dollars may be slipping back into what they are calling the debt trap. Kenya, whose shilling has weakened against foreign currencies like the dollar, may, in the near future, default on its debt, resulting in a financial crisis if something is not done to curb the situation. Some countries are looking to issue more Eurobonds (loans from Europe) to refinance existing foreign currency loans, Reuters reports. “But with US interest rates set to rise soon, the inevitably higher borrowing costs will do little to alleviate pressure on creaking state budgets,” says Reuters Financial Analyst Edward Cropley. He notes that at risk countries include Ghana, the first African sovereign after South Africa to go to the international markets when it launched a debut $750 million (Sh79 billion) Eurobond in 2007.

ISPs lower prices as demand goes up A growing demand for internet connectivity is prompting service providers to lower prices. A report from the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) confirmed that the cost of connectivity has fallen by roughly 90 per cent over the past decade or so. As service providers face stiff competition from rival companies, Kenya’s internet infrastructure appears to be facing a dilemma where current connectivity prices are still prohibitive to low income consumers. However, some providers are making efforts to woo consumers with subsidized offers. One of the latest entrants is Wananchi Group’s home entertainment brand, Zuku, which has reduced prices for its triple play platform. The
move is in tandem with the launch of its new product dubbed Zuku Fiber Infinite packages. Dubbed “Go Infinite Life Got Better”, the new packages will enable customers to access unlimited Internet, TV and talk telephone services with high data speeds of 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 50Mbps at reduced prices of Sh4,099; Sh5,299 and Sh9,799 respectively. “Zuku recognizes the dynamic and growing needs of our customers and is committed to offering tailor-made products and solutions,” said Wananchi Group CEO Richard Alden. “The new package has a price reduction of Sh200 across all packages. Existing clients have the option to remain on their current package or upgrade to the Infinite packages.
We are providing fast unlimited residential internet, digital television and phone services at great value,” he added. He noted that with the increasing demand for internet services, the TV product had been packaged separately for customers who would like the option of premium TV or Asian channels. This way, the triple play package will be bundled as Internet, Phone and Edge TV having 61 channels with free-to-air and Zuku channels. “We recognise that the market’s needs are continually evolving. It is essential therefore for Zuku Fiber to innovatively meet those needs and provide customers with quality solutions at a more affordable rate,” Mr Alden said.
Google Street View, the Google Map feature that allows users to view images of locations across the globe, has added Samburu to its list of viewable regions. The platform, which enables users to explore places around the world through a 360 degree, panoramic and street-level imagery, is now featuring Samburu National Reserve with more than 10,000 still photos on its platform. The move is part of a bid to create awareness and applaud efforts geared towards the conservation of elephants in Kenya, Google Kenya Country Marketing Manager Farzana Khubchandani explained. The global tech company has partnered with the Samburu National Reserve, Save the Elephants Foundation, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Samburu County Government and the people of Samburu to make this happen. “We hope that by bringing street view to Samburu, we will inspire people around the world to gain a deeper appreciation for elephants and compliment the efforts of organisations such as Save the Elephants,” Khubchandani said.

By seeking and achieving ISO certification through rigorous process audits, Hass Petroleum (K) now maintains international world class standards with regard to these systems. “Achievement of these coveted awards for us is our commitment to our customers and stakeholders, a commitment that our products will always meet the highest level of quality,” said Mr. Issa Mohamed, CEO.

MUSTREAD Dark Star Safari — by Paul Theroux
The novel is a real life account by the renowned Paul Theroux who takes us with him through Africa inside a rattled up bus, a canoe through the waters, on cow trucks, through army convoys into a ferry and finally, a train. Needless to say, his journey is a dangerous one with perturbing experiences but still, quite enlightening. On the road, he analyzes the state of affairs by talking to locals, missionaries, relief workers and tourists in this land and he ends up with a rich account of African history, politics and beauty.

YOURSAY Arm albinos to ensure their protection Recent attack of an albino man on his way home in Hamisi, Vihiga County was the height of all lows. As human beings we seem to have sunk deep into the bottomless pit where conscience and fear of God no longer count. I refuse to
understand any justification of human organ trafficking as a bridge to riches and opulence. It’s a fallacy that should only be sold in cuckooland. Consequently, civic education is not needed in the society to remove the
cobwebs of ignorance that feed this eternally thirsty ritual and witchcraft industry thriving on Albino parts. It is time we arm this vulnerable group to protect themselves from robbers and burglars. — Wuod Amary, Nairobi
All hail Gor Mahia for a job well done! Gor Mahia football club has against all odds emerged the 2015 Kenya Sportpesa Premier League champions after a 1-0 defeat of Sony sugar FC at Nyayo stadium last night. I take this early opportunity to congratulate the team as well as its management for a job well done. It has to go on record that this team had no
corporate sponsorship and that it depended on handouts from team supporters for its daily running. Despite the financial constraints, the team trudged on and has made history by winning the league title unbeaten. It is my humble appeal to thousands of Gor Mahia FC supporters to shun all acts of hooliganism to
enable the great team secure a sponsor in readiness for next season. I believe that with a little more financial backing, the team would be better placed and the team motivated to conquer Africa. Once again congratulations! — K.Mogallo - Nairobi
Teachers reprieve cut short by TSC They say that teaching is a noble profession, but not in Kenya. Just when teachers thought that they had gotten reprieve finally regarding their salaries, their employer, Teachers Service Commission and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission turned against them, asserting that they need to go through a job evaluation process before being awarded any salary increment with the
President asserting that there is no money to implement their salary demands. Meanwhile, as teachers continue to wallow in misery, students in boarding school are slowly having their lazy dreams come true as one by one, public boarding schools send their students back home since their teachers opted out of classrooms for almost a month now. — Mercy Guthua
Cord, Jubilee unity on teachers is welcome
The unusual unity exhibited by leaders from both the Jubilee Coalition and opposition Cord on the teachers strike is a welcomed move that should be extended to other issues affecting the country. It was unusual when Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula and Siaya Senator James Orengo publicly agreed that they are ready for a pay cut to pay teachers the 50-60 per cent pay increment as ruled by the Supreme
Court. Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale has also proposed that the three arms of government contribute money to assist the government implement the salary increment awarded to teachers. In order to achieve a united country, leaders should always speak in one voice on matters like this. — Sam Owino, Kariobang’i
Time to seriously address poaching menace
Africa should seek to reconstruct biodiversity conservation activities as a matter of urgency as it stands the most vulnerable to the climate change threats. The rate at which activities such as poaching of wild animals, urbanisation, overexploitation of mining fields, the growing
population, deforestation, unregulated development and anthropological misuse is taking place is alarming and needs to be addressed without delay to avoid further loses. National biodiversity strategies need to be adhered to by member countries. Indicators such as global
warming should not be ignored and ecosystem based adaptations need to be to protect the future generations from negative effects of ecosystem integrity. It is time to move from plan to action and from policy to practice. — African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS)

SPORTS BRIEFS Kenya seeks more medals as African Games races conclude Kenya’s medal haunt in the African Games will conclude today with Thomas Longosiwa expected to lead the search for gold in men’s 5,000m race. Participation of Longosiwa, 2012 bronze medallist in the same distance and Purity Rotich who returned bronze for the country despite arriving in Congo from Brussels, just two hours before the race Tuesday were in doubt after the team’s management preferred a direct trip to Brazzaville via Addis Ababa, but which could not work out because of visa issues. The Management Committee and the LOC sent letters of invitation, which eventually saw them travel through Nairobi. Cherotich ran her race, 3,000m steeplechase, and won a bronze medal only two hours after arrival. Longosiwa will be gunning for the medal alongside Victor Kimutai and Clement Kemboi, 3,000m steeplechase winner. Osaka marathon champion Grace Kimanzi will be up in the half marathon race which has also attracted Jane Moraa and Janet Rono
Homa Bay MP seeks to meet four time World champion, Kemboi Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma wants Kenyans to help him trace his idol, Ezekiel Kemboi. Kaluma confessed he admires the long standing Kemboi, four time 300m steeplechase world champion, the only Kenyan athlete he believes is intelligent on the track and now wants to meet him. “I want to meet Kemboi because I think he is one intelligent athlete,” admitted the MP. “When you see him, you see inspiration. He makes you envy him whenever he wins the race.
I must meet him, possibly in the next two weeks and shake his hand,” added the ardent admirer of the man whose gold in Beijing two weeks ago put him as the only athlete in the world to have won four successive world championship history. Kaluma also want to meet Vivian Cheruiyot, world 10,00m champions. The meeting between the two, X-Sport has learnt is expected to install Cheruiyot as the ambassador for a massive walk race to be organised by the MP to promote girl child education. The Mass Walk on Marathon set to take place
in the second week of November in Homa Bay town is aimed at empowering girl child while at the same time advocating for girl child education. “I want to create awareness on early marriage and HIV/Aids which is rampant along the lake region. This is the second time Kemboi is being invited by a prominent person after his Beijing triumph. Last week, Ida Odinga, wife to Cord leader Raila Odinga said she will be ‘hosting Kemboi and the rest of the team’ for a dinner.
South African boxer die after fight knock out A South African boxer has died after being knocked out in the first round of a bout. Mzwanele Kompolo died in the hospital in the town of Frere in the Eastern Cape Province.Kompolo, who the South African Sports ministry described as an “up and coming’” fighter, lost by TKO in the first round against Siphenathi Qampi. Kompolo collapsed in the ring and was taken to Frere hospital, where he went into a coma. He died on Tuesday. The ministry which is still investigating the death of female boxer Phindile Mwelase late last year did not reveal Kompolo age. Mwelase died after being in a coma for two weeks following a fight in the capital, Pretoria. On Monday, Australian boxer Davey Browne died four days after being knocked unconscious during a regional title fight in Sydney.
Mwombe ruled out of Olympic qualifiers with knee injury
National women’s Volleyball team and Kenya Prisons player Esther Mwombe will be out of action for at least two month after picking a knee injury during the African Gamesin Congo, Brazzaville. She dislocated her ankle in Kenya’s 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 24-26, 25-14, 15-11) to qualify to the final where they beat Cameroon 3-1 (15-25, 25-14, 25-15, 2519) to lift their first gold since 1999. Team manager Martin Makokha said the extent of the injury will be determined today by the doctors. “We’ll take her to the hospital tomorrow (today) to determine the extent of the injury, but she is expected to be out for at least two month, said Makokha at the JKIA during the team’s arrival from Congo. This means that Mwombe will miss zonal Olympics qualification between November and December 2015.

Kenya to merge senior, junior volleyball teams ahead of Olympic fixtures Kenya Volleyball Federation will merge both junior and senior women’s volleyball teams to come up with a strong squad for the Olympics qualification set to begin in November. X-Sports exclusively reported last week the impending changes expected within the Malkia squad where a number of senior players are expected to be axed from the squad. KVF president Waithaka Kioni confirmed on Tuesday evening after landing back with the junior team which won gold in Congo, Brazzaville on Sunday following a 3-1 (15-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-19) win over Cameroon in the final. “We will do a combination of both teams to create the best team
possible to ensure we qualify for Olympics,” said Kioni who held his ground when a division arose within the team (s) on which events, between FIVB world cup and African Games the two teams should take part in with the seniors preferring to go to Congo. They were eventually sent to Japan where they finished 10th out of 12 teams with only two wins out of 11 matches. The zonal face will take place between November and December this year with the continental phase set for between January and February. Kenya has laid a bid to host zonal qualification for men and women’s continental games.
Kioni remained philosophical when asked which coach, between David Lung’aho who was with the senior team and Paul Gitau, who despite being out of Volleyball for close to two years after resigning from his position at Kenya Commercial Bank in 2012 came back to win the country’s first continental gold in 24 years will be handed the squad. “I cannot be able to answer that question particularly because we have the coaches’ commission which will look at all these things and recommend (the best candidate) for the national executive committee,” said Kioni. Interestingly, the said (coaches’) commission is chaired by Gitau while Lung’aho is the director and
it will be interesting to see how they come up with the ideal candidate to steer Kenya to her first Olympics since losing the single Africans slot to Algeria in 2012. While Lung’aho, an ardent Arsenal supporter believe in the readymade product (players) to deliver instant result, (Jose) Mourinho style, Gitau has a lot of faith in untested players. “Personally I just need players, I do not want big names because I believe you can push anybody to become a champion,” said an elated Gitau at the JKIA, the same ground he promised Kenya gold when he flew out with a junior side which most people had lost hopes on to win any medal in Congo.
‘Mighty’ Gor Mahia edge out Sony to win 2015 title Gor Mahia are now the 2015 Kenya Sportpesa Premier League champions, after edging out Sony Sugar 1-0 in a floodlight match at the Nyayo National Stadium on yesterday evening. Winger Innocent Wafula scored the solitary goal to give Gor Mahia all the three points in the 40th minute, latching on a Godfrey Walusimbi cross after Meddie Kagere had missed the ball. Walusimbi, who played at the left back following Aboud Sibomana’s injury combined well with Victor “teargas” Abondo before sending the ball in the box. Sony defence was left flat-footed as the unmarked Wafula made a run from the far post. Gor Frank Nuttal started with George Odhiambo and Khalid manning the midfield as Harun Shakava and Musa Mohammed stood at the back while Boniface Oluoch maintained his position in goal. The game was however stopped in the 13th minute due to power outage at the stadium amid screams from the ecstatic fans before resuming after 10 minutes. Gor Mahia move that had been started deep in the midfield ended up with a cross in the dark after the floodlights went off. The game resumed with Sony defence led by ex-Gor Mahia Charles Bruno and Joseph Omweri standing their ground against danger men Michael “Engineer” Olunga and Kagere, but could not deal with hardworking “Blackbery” Odhiambo and Godfrey Walusimbi who were constant threats on the left flank. Olunga, however forced a save on the millers’ goalkeeper Allan Owiny on the 30th minute with a header after being picked by Odhiambo. K’Ogalo would take the lead on the 40th minute. The visitors attacking line that had Ugandan Andrew Sekayombya and Marwa Chamberi did not threaten Oluoch in goal thanks to vigilant defending from Shakava and Captain Musa Mohammed as the first half ended in Gor’s favour. After the break, Gor came back docile
and were unable to double up their lead. Sony kept pressing for an equalizer but were unable to break K’Ogalo’s defence. The millers won several corners bot wasted all of them. Nuttal dedicated the win to K’Ogalo’s faithful, saying Gor is a family from the technical bench, players to the fans and
that everyone has played a part. He however urged the Green Army to wait until the final game as the tradition of KPL when the team will be handed the trophy to celebrate. He said the teams unbeaten run continues and they will defend it in the remaining four matches.
CHAMPIONS AT LAST: Gor Mahia die-hard Jaro Soja celebrates at the Nyayo National Stadium after Gor hit Sony Sugar FC 1-0 yesterday to lift the 2015 Sportpesa premier league title for three times in a row. Gor are yet to lose any match this season.
Roma hold CL holders Barcelona as Messi makes 100th appearance Alessandro Florenzi scored a 60-yard strike to spoil Lionel Messi’s century appearance at the Champions’ League as Roma forced holders Barcelona to their first draw in 13 matches last night. Luis Suarez gave Baraca the lead after nodding in Ivan Rakatic’s cross, but Florenzi responded with a wonder goal when the full-back collected the ball in his own half, before unleashing an effort which floated over Marc-Andre ter Stegen and into the net. On his 100th competition appearance, the closest Lionel Messi came to scoring was when he hit the crossbar despite his side having a 76 per cent ball possession
on the night. Barca won the Spanish league, cup and European Cup last season and seemed to be on their way to a comfortable victory, but they were shocked by a stunning strike. There looked to be no danger when Italy international Florenzi dispossessed Jordi Alba inside his own half, before bursting forward. After looking up and seeing no options ahead of him, Florenzi struck a right-footed shot which caught out goalkeeper ter Stegen and looped into the goal - via the post to spark wild celebrations in the Stadio Olimpico. Barcelona talisman Messi reached a
century of matches, but endured a frustrating night. He struck a free-kick over the bar in the opening period, and when he did get his shots on target, the Argentine was not able to find a way past Wojciech Szczesny. After the Polish stopper went off injured, Messi rattled the bar when the ball dropped to him in the box. After Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday, Messi’s goalless evening leaves him on 77 Champions League strikes, trailing three behind his Real Madrid rival.

35 yards may have been fortuitous, as it evaded a crowd of players before bouncing in, but from the moment the Blues took the lead, there only ever looked like being one winner. Chelsea went into the match under pressure after one of their worst league start in a season. Olivier Giroud was sent off for Arsenal as they lost at Dinamo who extended their unbeaten run to 42 games as they beat an English topflight side for the first time in the Champions League. Josip Pivaric shot was saved by keeper David Ospina, but rebounded in off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to give the host the lead. The Gunners then went two goals and a man behind after a Giroud was sent-off for a second booking when he fouled Ivo Pinto before Junior Fernandes headed in for Dinamo. Theo Walcott superbly slotted in to give Arsenal hope, but the home side nervously held on for the win.
