Public servants to join teachers strike TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2015
Public servants have threatened to join teachers in their strike which entered its second day today. At a press conference at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) headquarters in Nairobi today, leaders of the Trade Unions Congress of Kenya said they have been saddened by the government’s refusal to implement a court order directing that teachers’ salaries be increased. “TUC-K will join teachers in their strike and we are telling the teachers not to go to class but instead go the banks until they are paid. Workers in their entirety will join the strike,” said TUC deputy general secretary Charles Mukhwaya. Teachers have stayed away from classes for the second day today after their union directed them to boycott duty until the government honours the court order to increase their pay. But the dispute could be headed for a stand-off after Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich declared yesterday that the government has no money to pay teachers. “The figure that teachers are demanding was not captured in the budget. Where will I get Sh17

billion to give them,” Rotich posed yesterday. But the unionists have differed with his sentiments and criticized him for treating the matter casually. “We don’t expect the CS to say there is no money yet the country is losing Sh137 billion in tax evasion every year,” Dr Mukhwaya said. “And we are telling them not
to even consider borrowing or taxing the already overburdened Kenyans. The government has a lot of money and should pay teachers,” he added. Mr Odege said workers will not relent until teachers are paid their dues as was ruled by the court. “It is sad that the government has refused to obey a court order from the same court that made Uhuru Kenyatta the President. The money
demanded by teachers is meager and should be given to them,” Odege said. Meanwhile Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has implored the teachers to report to work as was directed by Teachers Service Commission. “My appeal to them is to go back to class as directed by their employer,” he said.
Cholera outbreak in Wajir halts re-opening of schools The opening of schools in Wajir will be delayed for five days following a monthlong cholera outbreak in the region. The five days delay will allow the County’s health department to conduct inspections in all the 42 private and public schools to ensure health standards are adhered to before allowing students to resume learning. “We are going round on Thursday and Friday to see which schools have basic things like toilets, hand washing facilities, kitchens sanitation standards and the hygiene of the people providing food,” said Abdinur Haji Mohammed, the Wajir County Executive for public health and sanitation. “We cannot put the lives of pupils of the entire region at risk by allowing them to resume learning before the inspection is carried out,” Mohammed said. The cholera outbreak is reported to have killed 11 people so far, with over 300 others treated. “We will allow schools to open up after we accomplish the inspection. However, we will be going round and any school that doesn’t meet the public health standards will be dealt with. We will not compromise the health of our children,” Mohammed said.
Kidero offers land owners 100% waiver on penalties
DP Ruto: Wrangles hampering devolution
The Nairobi City County is offering a 100 per cent waiver on penalties on outstanding Land Rates defaulters within its jurisdiction beginning today until the end of the month. This means that land owners will now pay their outstanding debts alone without incurring the excess burden of penalties. The move, which is in accordance with the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act of 2013, is aimed at helping land owners clear their outstanding debt. Speaking during a briefing at the City County Headquarters, Nairobi County Governor Dr Evans Kidero (Pictured) said that the government had discovered that some land owners were not aware that they were supposed to pay rates. “There has been a lot of accumulation in terms of penalties and interest,” he said. As a result, the Governor noted that land owners, including commercial property owners owe the company roughly Sh158
Deputy President William Ruto has raised concern that the strained the relationship between the national government and the County governments is posing a threat to devolution. The Deputy President said there should be no competing interests between the two levels of governments as both of them serve the same people. “There is no classification of people, we are all Kenyans who have a right to get the best services from leaders, therefore both the National government and the County government should work together harmoniously,” Ruto said. Speaking at Narosura market in Narok South constituency during a funds drive for 70 women groups from the area yesterday, Ruto maintained that the national government will not reverse the gains of devolution but will instead support County governments to continue providing better services to the people. “We in the national government are committed to the success and
billion, which also accounts for penalties and cumulative interest. “We have decided to respond to the pleas of Nairobians and give a 100 per cent remission rate with a 10 per cent administration fee for a period of 1 month,” he said. Nairobi land owners with outstanding debt will be required to pay those rates within the next 30 days. Governor Kidero said that the cash collected will enable the County to cater for various expenses including the collection of garbage, maintenance of sewerage systems, procurement of medicine for local clinics and the development of Nairobi’s infrastructure. He also announced that the County Assembly had passed a law for the regularization of buildings that were set up without the necessary approval procedure. Dr Kidero said that those with outstanding fees would not need to visit City Hall to check their balance. “We have an e-payment system. All one needs to do is dial *217#,”
he explained. The Governor urged land and property owners to get their affairs in order ahead of a 6-month deadline that the County Government plans to enforce. “We have really gone out of our way to create a Bill outside of the established law to enable people to make lawful their investments. So six months is a long time,” he said.
growth of the devolved units and will ensure none of their functions is taken over by the any of the Ministries,” Ruto said. We shall continue to work for this country irrespective of circumstances, case or no case we will continue to work for Kenyans,” he added. Ruto criticized some leaders engaged in supremacy wars and unnecessary wrangling in the counties saying the quarrels were not only a major drawback to the success of the county governments but also went against the principles of good leadership. He deplored tribalism and ethnicity saying those advancing tribal or clan politics were poised to fail. “Leaders are elected because of their ability to deliver services to the electorate not because of tribal jingoism. Those who are fronting their tribes or clans as basis for their election are not worthy of being elected to those positions,” he said. “The main agenda of anybody in leadership position is to change the lives of people,” Ruto said.

South Sudan troopS ‘break ceaSefire’ South Sudan’s rebel leader has accused the government of violating a ceasefire hours after it came into effect. Riek Machar said the army attacked his forces in two northern states, allegations which the military denies. President Salva Kiir, under the threat of sanctions from the UN, signed a peace agreement on Wednesday, despite “serious reservations”. Several ceasefires to end the brutal 20-month conflict in the world’s youngest nation have failed to hold. The ceasefire came into effect at midnight local time on Saturday (21:00 GMT). Mr Machar said his troops remained committed to the ceasefire despite the reported attacks in northern Unity and Upper Nile states, but would act in self-defence if the offensive continues. “The government is unable to control its own troops,” Mr Machar told reporters in Ethiopia. He also accused the government of launching a “belligerent convoy”, including
gunships, on the River Nile from the capital Juba. The convoy had been bombarding villages as it headed through rebel-held territory on its way north, he said. Army spokesman Col Philip Aguer denied that there were any government troops operating in the areas where the alleged attacks took place. “These are mere fabrications by the rebels. We don’t have any report of clashes,” he is quoted by AFP news agency as saying. The government has also accused Mr Machar of failing to properly order his troops to stop fighting. Tens of thousands of people have died and more than two million have been displaced from their homes since the conflict started in December 2013. In a unanimous statement last week, the UN Security Council called on both parties “to adhere to the permanent ceasefire immediately”, or face an arms embargo and other sanctions.

Kenya has more adults than it has children, many of them are unemployed
NEWS BRIEFS
Guards hacked to death in bizarre attack on Dandora church
Kenya has 26 million adults out of a population of 45.9 million people, recent statistics have revealed. This means that there are over 6 million more adults in the country than there are children. Given these numbers, on average, every adult in the country could have a child with more than 6 million having none. The data, however, indicates that since only a fraction of people over the age of 18 have children, there are families with as many as 5 or 6 children within their households. There have been reported cases of people fathering as many as 14 children and others who have multiple families from multiple relationships. Data from the World Bank indicates that these statistics paint a grim picture in a country where more than 40
Two security guards were this morning killed in an attack at a church compound that is under construction in Dandora. A third guard was left hospitalized with serious wounds sustained from the attack. A gang of eight raided the Catholic Church compound and slashed the guards who were on duty before escaping on foot without stealing anything from them. Police say they are yet to know the motive of the attack and those behind it. The guard who survived said the gang did not utter a word when they struck. A team of police officers has been sent to the area to trace the attackers and their motive.
per cent of the population is unemployed. This means that there are families where parents have no jobs despite having several mouths to feed. In light of these challenges, the government, the World Bank, foreign lenders, NGOs and even members of the private sector have set up initiatives to help lower the unemployment rate. Just a month ago, Kenya was fortunate to be listed among a six African countries that will benefit from a Sh435.8 million initiative by The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation (TCCAF). The money will be geared towards youth empowerment initiatives that will provide employment and mentoring to 25,000 young Africans.
Donholm, Baba Dogo among most polluted Nairobi estates
CFC: Traffic in Nairobi has been attributed to cause massive air pollution. UNEP announced that such is dangerous for humans and affects the environment significantly.
Nairobi’s Donholm and Baba Dogo estates are among the most polluted areas in according to findings of a five-day study on air quality in the city by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). Others are Kariokor Market, Hazina estate and parts of Gachie. UNEP’s chief scientist Jacqueline McGlade said the areas have the highest concentration of poisonous gases that have adverse effects on humans and the environment. The concentration of industries in one area and traffic jams were cited as some of the
contributors to such pollution. The study indicates that emissions from vehicles and industries mix up with the air that city residents breathe leading to serious health problems. In order to save premature loss of lives due to pollution, UNEP together with Kenya’s Ministry of Environment has launched a new technology used to measure air quality. UNEP programme Director Achim Steiner described the technology as revolutionary and one that could help save the seven lives lost prematurely every year due to air pollution. “What we know
today is that seven million people die worldwide every year because of air pollution, bad air, it’s neither acceptable nor is it necessary,” Steiner said. Until now, it would cost a country more than 15 million shillings to monitor air quality but the equipment launched by UNEP would only cost sh150, 000. “What we’re presenting here today is a world’s first. The box we have here will enable us to measure particle matter, basically what is in the air, what enters our lungs, what kills us, what gives us cancer and in many more locations,” said Achim.
“This kit removes the guesswork and out of it we can now measure how we are faring. This now makes it consistent and on a daily basis,” said Judy Wakhungu, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment. The World Health Organization indicates that 88 percent of deaths related to outdoor pollution occur in developing countries that typically lack access to data on their air quality. “The challenge with enforcing is the evidence, so here now we have the evidence that we can show from day to day and so therefore we need to enforce and to
implement,” Wakhungu said. “There is little we can do to change how people do things, but we can target the factories that are polluting and breaking the law but there are also solutions like boda boda which are a great asset for people to move around but they are a big polluter, thersssse are now electric motorcycles produced in china which are sold for the same price as the two stroke engines.” Wakhungu added Wakhungu said such information will help citizens invest in the latest and the least pollutant technologies.

Kenya is home to impunity –
Afrobarometer:
Kenya leads as the country with the highest perception of impunity among 21 African nations, a new report by Afrobarometer shows. The report, released last week, says that government officials who commit crimes rarely get punished through the Kenyan judicial system. Three in four Kenyans (76 per cent) say that government officials who commit crimes ‘always’ or ‘often’ go unpunished. This is an increase of 12 percentage points since the previous survey in 2011 suggested an increase in impunity in the country.

Car & General, Mumias Sugar, East African Cables, Express Kenya, Standard Group, and Uchumi Supermarkets have warned investors to expect a fall in their profit by at least 25 per cent, attributing it mainly to the weakening currency and high operating costs. The announcements mean some of the firms will post losses or record significant declines in their profit, which in most cases leads to a freeze or cut in dividend payouts.

As men, women and children – many fleeing Syria’s civil war – continued to arrive from the east, authorities let thousands of undocumented people travel on towards Germany, the favoured destination for many. The influx is a crisis for the European Union, which has eliminated border controls between 26 Schengen area states but requires asylum seekers to apply in the first EU country they reach. In line with EU rules, an Austrian police spokesman said only those who had not already requested asylum in Hungary would be allowed through, but the sheer pressure of numbers prevailed, and trains were allowed to move on. “Thank God nobody asked for a passport … No police, no problem,” said Khalil, 33, an English teacher from Kobani in Syria. www.theguardian.com
migrants and asylum seekers now flooding into Europe by the tens of thousands, and the inability so far to accommodate them in an organized way, may be starting to fray Europe’s commitment to erase old borders. The evidence was on stark display Monday, as the Austrian authority disrupted traffic from Hungary, causing backups of at least 12 miles, while inspecting vehicles for smuggled migrants. The crackdown could last indefinitely. The official explanation was to avert another mass death of migrants like those found in an unventilated truck near Vienna last week, believed to be victims of a smuggling ring. But the practical consequences of the crackdown mean that routine passport-free travel between Hungary and Austria is no longer routine. In another disruption, trains from Hungary packed with migrants, many apparently seeking refuge in Germany, were stalled at the HungaryAustria frontier for hours. www.nytimes.com
Federal-Reserve rate increase. The Fed, America’s Central Bank, last raised rates in June of 2006, by 25 basis points to 5.25%. It soon found itself reversing course, as a housing bust gave way to the Great Recession; since December of 2008, the Fed’s benchmark interest rate has been set at between 0.0% and 0.25%. Yet that may be about to change. A speech delivered on August 29th by Stanley Fischer (pictured), the vice-chairman of the Federal Reserve, gave no indication that the Fed had been deterred by recent market wobbles from its plan to raise rates this year, and perhaps at the next meeting, on September 16-17th. Why is the Fed about to raise interest rates? The Federal Reserve is charged with setting monetary policy in order to meet congressionally set mandates for “maximum employment” and “stable prices”. www.economist.com
Long-simmering tensions between Europe’s East and West over how to handle a massive influx of migrants burst back into the open after Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday warned Germany’s Eastern neighbours that the bloc’s prized passportfree zone was at risk unless they shouldered more of the burden. Hundreds of thousands of migrants, including many fleeing the war-torn Middle East, have crossed the Mediterranean and Aegean in recent months to seek refuge in the EU, with their ultimate destination often the economically prosperous north. But the mass movement has strained Europe’s existing arrangements on migration, inflamed the politics of immigration, raised doubts over maintaining open-borders, and prompted fraught debate over creating a system for routinely sharing refugees. Ms Merkel rebuked eastern European states reluctant to accept Muslim asylum seekers and cast the refugee crisis as a test of the union’s founding values. www.ft.com

Kenya tops financial inclusion survey of developing countries Out of a list of developing nations, Kenya is the number one country in terms of financial inclusion, a Bookings Financial and Digital Inclusion survey has revealed. Kenya beat a host of other nations including South Africa, Nigeria and Brazil to the punch in providing people with opportunities that facilitate individual prosperity and economic development. The survey was aimed at measuring progress based on a country’s ability to provide financial access to its citizens. The study used a systematic approach to rank more than 20 nations. It based its results on the countries’ ability to build mobile capacity, ensuring regulatory empowerment and
promoting the adoption of financial services. The countries’ ranks were calculated based on a maximum score of 100 per cent and the data was compiled by Bookings researchers, John Villasenor, Darrell West, and Robin J. Lewis. Based on the results, Kenya received an overall score of 89 per cent. The country scored 89 per cent in the country commitment category, 94 per cent in both the “mobile capacity” and “regulatory empowerment” categories while scoring 84 per cent in the “adoption” category. Kenya’s score was greatly influenced by revolutionary mobile money services that have encouraged people to take up alternative forms of banking.
“Mobile money and other digital financial services are enabling enormous progress in access to finance, particularly in where there is often a lack of legal systems and established traditional financial institutions,” explained the researchers. They argue that in order to “drive access to and adoption of digital financial services (including but not limited to mobile money), governments and the private sector will need to increase investments in digital communications and payments infrastructure and ensure services are affordable.” The trio says that women and other marginalized groups can benefit from greater access to mobile money and other digital financial services.

By investing approximately Ksh100 million in the first phase of expansion it will add 25 retail outlets opened in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan and Zambia by end of 2015. Kenya is marked for two more outlets to be opened in Nairobi, bringing to six the total number of LG outlets across the country. Speaking while officially opening a new outlet at the Nairobi’s Garden City Mall, LG Electronics’ Managing Director Mr. Taeick Son said the company would continue to focus on delivering innovative products to its customers in eastern Africa. “We are

He added: “This outlet, just like the rest of the portfolio that we shall soon be rolling out, will provide our wide range of products that includes home entertainment, home appliances, mobile phones and air conditioners, among others.” At the beginning of the year, the company embarked on a drive to improve its customer service by opening two new service centers in Nairobi and Mombasa, bringing the total number of such units in Kenya to 17. #Facebook is a place where…has been trending, and Facebook users have been on the receiving end as twitter bigwigs set the record straight and even though Facebook users fought back, still twitter remains at the helm of social media apps.

f you know anyone who has never heard of Facebook before, just direct them to the trending twitter topic #Facebook is a place where..., and they will be up to speed after scrolling through just a few tweets thanks to the ever hilarious Kenyans on Twitter. Unlike other recent trends from Kenya such as someone tell CNN and someone tell Donald Trump, the bantering of Facebook has been more gentle, but only because Facebook has not offended Kenya yet. On this particular trend which had been going round all weekend long and on Monday morning, the Kenyan online forces came together to give their two cents on both the good and the ugly sides of Facebook. A trend spreads faster when some roasting is involved as seen in this trend that focused more on the soaring improper use of the social networking site by its members. Issues touched on humorously include the creation of stalker accounts by jealous lovers who know how easy it is to
get caught when stalking a partner through the simple mistake of liking photos uploaded years ago. Also popular in this trend was the practice of unattractive Facebook users hiding behind the beauty of celebrity profile photos, as well as sexual identity falsification where more than a few men have found themselves hitting on fellow men posing as women. Additionally, Kenyans on Twitter came out to express their concern over the rampant lying regarding areas of residence and educational institutions attended by Facebook users, some claim to be currently living in the United States yet they are always the first to curse the Kenya Power Company whenever there is a black out! Despite the massive contributions from Kenyans on aggravating issues around Facebook, only a few posts could take home the best tweet trophy. First was the post about the universal confusion regarding the intentions of the Facebook users who like statuses about someone
passing away, which is not only disturbing but also malicious. Also on the highly retweeted list was the issue of Facebook users who always send a ‘thanks for the add’ message once you accept their friend request and also those who send you friend requests, yet you have no mutual friends, which leaves you wondering how on earth (or on Facebook in this case) they found you. The annoying posts compelling users to type Amen and share horrific posts about sicknesses and bizarre occurrences also stood out in the Facebook roast by Kenyans, which revealed that we had been holding in a lot of frustration and annoyance. Thanks to the #Facebook is a place where…, Kenyans had an opportunity to get irritating Facebook issues off their chests. Despite all these perceived put offs on Facebook, the site continues to grow and statistics from Mark Zuckerberg’s team last week revealed that the site had clocked one billion active log ins in a single day.

The Cave of ThRee BRIdges The Baatara Gorge waterfall which is also referred to as three bridge chasm in Tannourine, Lebanon was carved out of limestone over millions of years by winter melt water. This cave of three bridges turns into a waterfall when the snow melts. The waterfall, which is fed by melt water from Mount Lebanon, falls 250 meters into the chasm’s depths past 160-million-year-old limestone from the Jurassic period.

Experiments carried out with fluorescent dye in 1988 indicated that the water from the chasm emerges from underground at a spring in the nearby town of Mgharet al-Ghaouaghir. Signs at the cave discourage visitors from standing on the bridges or coming too close to the edge – the edges are slippery, and the bridges may collapse under the weight of too many visitors.
The making of
JewelRy
from ordinary materials
It’s a ‘cut’ before marriage affair for Rendille brides
For one to be considered marriageable in this community they had to build a house. The wedding took place at the bride’s village. Early in the morning the bride would be circumcised as the groom, his best man and a group of friends moved towards the mother in laws hut singing and driving an ewe and a very fat ram. The ewe would then be taken and placed in the mother in law’s hut while the ram was taken to the entrance of the hut where the elders slaughtered it. They then carefully cut the fat strips which the groom and best man carefully carried to the mother in law though the entrance to the hut. Most of the day would be taken up with the elders drinking tea as the women used the best mats to build a new hut for the bride. The women from the groom’s clan dressed in the ceremonial ‘okko’ (skin with bells attached). In the evening, the elders made the first fire for the new hut by rubbing two sticks together then the groom, best man and bride moved slowly to the new hut which was built at the center of the village. The groom entered the hut through the opening that was left in the wall of the hut. The girl did the same from the opening on the other side then a baby was briefly placed in her arms. The best man cut the toenails of both of them then tied them to the groom’s attire. This symbolized the unity of the two. The groom and his best man left for the night and continiued to do so for five days when the groom came back , since the bride would have started to heal from the cut.
J
ewelry is every girl’s best friend. Most ladies feel incomplete without their jewelry on. Kuthea Muia is an artist who appeals to the ladies and this is because she makes jewelry by hand. At first it was just a hobby that she developed after graduating from high school. “It was not as easy as I thought because I did not know where to get the materials and how to do the jewelry,” she says. Following her passion, she did one piece after another and before long her hands had gotten the hang of it and she started doing it with a little more skill. Kuthea’s art can be described as fun, bright and colorful and this is because she fuses different colors into every piece in order to come up with the desired result. The materials that she uses include beads, bands, metal and material. The time that it takes to complete a particular piece varies. This is because there are some pieces that are straightforward while there are others which require extra attention. “It depends on the type of piece I am making. For example, a pair of earrings would take a shorter period as compared to a bangle,” she tells X access. For Kuthea, the diversity in culture and its uniqueness is her source of
Kuthea Muia
inspiration. Some of the Kenyan cultures that inspire her to dig deeper include the Maasai, Kalenjin and Akamba culture. It is from the vibrant colors to how they wear their cultural pieces that inspire her jewelry making. Having to create a beautiful piece from the ordinary day to day materials can be quite challenging but not for this artist because that is what makes her art different and unique from other artists. “My art is different and unique because I get ordinary materials and make the extra ordinary pieces from them” She says When starting out, Kuthea like any other artist, had challenges, which included not knowing where to get the materials and making pieces that had a clean cut. With time, she has managed to overcome these challenges as she produces clean-cut pieces. She thinks that there is more that needs to be done in the art industry but not all hope is lost as it is headed in the right direction. “I think the art industry is heading in the right direction but more needs to be done especially in terms of nurturing art in our young people. There is so much potential in our Kenyan youth,” she says.

The society we live in ignorantly dictates that in initiating romantic relationships, women should never make the first move. But what is a woman who shares mutual romantic feelings with a man who is too shy to approach her supposed to do to get things going? Worry not, help is here!
tips on dating a shy man
shy man
Initiate small talk
Since you already know that he is shy, you should also know that he will probably never talk to you out of the blue. It is up to you to show him that you also like him through simple ways such as saying hello or waving to him when you see him, or employing creative tactics like asking him for help in a field he is good at even though you are actually better at it than he is. This should send him the message that you know he exists and you would like to have an actual conversation with him. If you sit around waiting for him to master up courage to spark a conversation with you, he might interpret this as you not being interested in him, and you might wait a very long time.
Act like you don’t notice his shyness You might tease him about his shy nature thinking that it is
a sweet gesture, but it is not. If anything, it only adds to his insecurities, as Esther Wanyeki, a Public Relations consultant learnt the hard way. “I used to tease a guy that I liked about him being shy, thinking that he would take it lightly and it would help him ease up. Instead, he stopped speaking to me completely and I later learnt from a mutual friend that by letting him know that I was well aware of his weakness, I killed the little confidence that he had gathered up to even exchange pleasantries with me.” No man likes being considered weak and as such, if you are dealing with a shy man, you should act like you do not notice it. Even if he brings it up in a conversation, act surprised and never confirm his insecurity.
Target the friend zone
Turns out the friend zone can
I had been dating my work colleague for almost a year. Last week, we got into a sour argument and we decided to call off the relationship. I want to get over him as soon as possible, but that will probably never happen because I see him all day long at work. I don’t know if he is going through the same mental torment, it is turning out to be quite the nightmare. My productivity at work has started declining since all I do at work is stare at him at his desk. What should I do?
-Sue
actually contribute to you getting a life partner, at least when dealing with a shy man. Normally, shy people are the loudest and most conversant when they are around their friends. When you start off as friends with a shy man, it helps him get comfortable around you and if you manage to make it out of the friend zone, shyness and awkward moments will never be an issue in your relationship.
Don’t expect him to decode your signals
Generally, shy men are less inexperienced in deciphering women’s code language. Don’t expect a shy man to take hints by giving them the silent treatment or saying the opposite of what you mean. In this special case, focus on plain communication through words as opposed to coded communication through nonverbal cues and other forms of body language.

aboutLove
Dear Sue,
Sorry about your breakup, and you should take comfort that it is never easy getting over a loved one even if they live miles away after a break up. Have you considered taking a break from work? This will give you some alone time to come to terms with the break up, put things into
perspective and get your ex off your mind. If you cannot get a few off days, ask for a bigger work load to keep your mind occupied at work. You will find that you rarely look up from your work station to stare at your ex-boyfriend. All the best.

KATO to set four hubs to boost tours The Kenya Association of Tour Operation (KATO) has unveiled plans to create four major tour operation hubs in the country. Speaking during the Kenya Tourism Federation (KFT) single tourist visa awareness programme, KATO Chief Executive Fred Kaigua said that the hubs will be in Kisumu, Nakuru, Nanyuki and Mombasa. “Tour operations at the county level has brought both challenges and opportunities and we can’t set up 47 tour operation branches since some counties have few tour operations to sustain a branch,” he said. “We have identified Kisumu hub to serve the Western circuit, Nakuru to serve the entire Rift Valley, Nanyuki to serve the Mt Kenya region and Mombasa to serve the Coastal region. The hubs will cover the major regions in the country before being devolved,” he added. According to the CEO Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers Mike Macharia, devolution is a key agenda in tourism advocacy announcing that already six counties in North Rift have agreed to work as a regional tourism block. However, KTF has embarked on massive sensitisation and awareness campaign on the use of National Identification (NID) and Single Tourism Visa (STV) for travels across the East Africa Community Member countries. The initiative follows a survey commissioned by KTF in partnership with Trademark East Africa which revealed that information

Susan Ongalo. The report further indicated low level awareness with a significant proportion of 17 per cent officials not being aware on the use of National IDs. The initiative is expected to ensure the three counties have a significant share of the registered 50 million tourists who visit the continent annually; as well as stir cross border economic and tourism growth.
India accuses Google of stifling competition Indian authorities have accused tech giant Google of abusing its dominance in search advertising. India took three years inquiring from centres on complaints filed by several websites which claimed that Google has been unfairly highlighting its own services. The said accusations are similar to other allegations Google has faced from the US and Europe. However, the San Francisco
based company says it is confident it will be cleared of wrongdoing in India though has only ten days to respond to the findings by the Indian Competition Commission. Google has been further accused by Europe to have influenced its shopping results to put rivals at a disadvantage. European regulators are examining whether the internet company manipulated search results to steer traffic
away from rival sites that could hinder its advertising sales. They denied the allegations but if the case will be ruled in favour of Europe, then the firm could be faced with a multi-billion dollar fine. Regulations in the US wrapped up a probe into Googles practices in 2013 concluding that it was not mandatory for it to make major changes on how it ranks websites.
Cost of wheat and maize flour falls as inflation plummets The cost of a two kilogram pack of wheat flour has fallen to Sh130.93 compared to Sh135.02 during the same period last year. The price drop follows a fall in the rate of inflation, which refers to a general increase in prices and a fall in the purchasing value of money. The inflation rate fell to 5.84 per cent in August compared to 6.62 per cent in July. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reveals that the general cost of food and nonalcoholic drinks decreased by 0.26 per cent between July and August 2015.
The cost of to kilograms of sifted maize flour fell to Sh115.13 this month compared to Sh116.94 in August last year. The Bureau has pinned the decrease on favourable weather conditions in recent months which caused a reduction in the prices of several food items. On the other hand, some food products have recorded an increase in their prices. Tomatoes, for instance, are currently selling at Sh107.53 while they were selling at Sh101.45 a year ago. Kale has also seen a jump in prices from Sh30.44 in August 2014 to Sh37.13.

The loss was mainly due to the weakening of regional currencies against the US dollar and reduced investment income brought about by losses in the value of equities listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). “Our expenses increased by 14 percent due to significant investment in creation of capacity for growth in the group’s new subsidiaries in Kenya Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and DRC.” the management said. YOURSAY Corporates must learn to appreciate athletes We are all proud of the excellent performance shown by our athletes at the ongoing IAAF World Championships in Beijing. However, it is not right for corporates who have not supported these athletes in the past and are not planning
to do so in the future to take advantage of their winning spree to run promotions to market their products and increase their sales margins. These athletes work hard to achieve world recognition thus should be recognized. In
other countries, especially in the West, athletes are national heroes who are widely adored by corporates. They are very well paid for endorsements and product branding and marketing. —Suffocate Mkenya, Nairobi
GMOs will not kill you, but don’t eat them Obviously you will not die from eating genetically modified organisms, but who says it is good for your system? There is not enough scientific study proving that GMO’s are harmless. Sadly, the data we have access to is from the companies that produce GMO-based foods making
the data completely biased because it supports their own opinions. If the GMO’s were being produced for the betterment of humanity, I would probably trust them more. But, the fact is that GMO food is usually created for entirely superficial reasons.
They create fruit that doesn’t have seeds so that farmers are forced to purchase new seed every year instead of letting nature run its course. They modify food so that it is a particular shape or colour, which is completely unnecessary. — Andrew Oliech, Nairobi
Jubilee MPs gloat over Ruto’s ICC case Just a fortnight ago President Uhuru Kenyatta promised the President of the Assembly of State Parties to the Rome Statute of ICC Sadiki Kaba that Kenya will continue to cooperate with ICC because it believes in the rule of law. But what Jubilee MPs said on Saturday in Narok North, that the Deputy President should boycott hearing of the case against him at the
International Criminal Court (ICC), terming the Hague-based Court as political and not judicial contradicts Mr Kenyatta’s words of promise. A move that has vexed ICC Presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji and am afraid this may further put the DP in a very knotty quagmire. — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi
Dear TSC, quit threats and pay teachers The Teachers Service Commission should be engaging the government and working on modalities to raise funds to ensure teachers countrywide are paid as per the court’s ruling instead of issuing unrealistic threats. Even as schools re-open today, the teachers unions must stand firm and demand the implementation of the 50% - 60% pay
increment. In comparison to other civil servants, teachers are still the lowest paid yet they offer a vital service to the future leaders of this nation. As we parents prepare our children for term three of this academic year, let us all support the teachers and ensure they get the pay rise to enable them offer better services to our children. — Suffocate Mkenya, Nairobi
Just hurry up and pay teachers, Mr Rotich National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Mr Henry Rotich needs to learn that teachers are the cornerstones of our civilization and stop mouthing off against their disputed salaries. Rotich had the audacity to say
that the figure that teachers are demanding “was not captured in the Budget.” He dared to ask: “Where will I get Sh17 billion to give them?” You will get it from the greedy gangs within our gratuitous government; from those
ghastly gold-grabbing goblins in power! The government needs to force MPs to sell their expensive cars, forfeit their allowances and stop eating Sh20,000 lunches at Sankara in order to raise that money. —Dennis B., Nairobi

SPORTS BRIEFS De Gea in limbo after missed deadline stalls Madrid move Manchester United’s late attempt to finalise David de Gea’s transfer to Real Madrid ended in chaos and finger-pointing on Monday night when the paperwork was not signed off in time at the end of a hectic and sometimes baffling day of transfer movement that also saw the Old Trafford club make Monaco’s Anthony Martial the most expensive teenager in world football. De Gea’s paperwork was not filed before the midnight Spanish transfer deadline, with the goalkeeper described as “distraught” about the late twist to a remarkable day in which United also moved out Adnan Januzaj and Javier Hernández. Real were working into the early hours to try to persuade the Spanish authorities to let the deal happen. Real are expected to try again on Tuesday by appealing to FIFA but at 2am in Spain the deal looked as if it had collapsed and there were reports blaming United for purportedly faxing one of the documents too late.
We’re closing in on useful leads, ADAK
Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) is closing in on ‘leads’ that could shade more light on the root cause of doping in the country, Athletics Kenya (AK) has said. Athletics Kenya President Isaiah Kiplagat said this while responding to the latest doping cases involving Joy Zakari and Fransisca Koki who failed their respective tests from samples taken at the just concluded 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China. “We have asked ADAK to be on top of things too because indications are that we may have leads, and this time if they lead us somewhere, there will be severe punishment,” Kiplagat who resumed office on Monday after a three-moth sabbatical said at Riadha House. “It did not affect our performance. All our athletes were tested three times and I’m glad that other than the two girls everybody was clear,” Kiplagat told local press.
Harambee Stars ready for Zambia clash Harambee Stars journey back to the continental football showpiece after 11 years of slumber will resume this Sunday when they take on Zambia in the first leg match of the AFCON 2017 qualifier at Nyayo National Stadium. The last time Kenya took part at the event was way back in 2004 under the guidance of Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee, the first local coach to have a achieved the feat but after an impressive 1-1 draw away to Congo last June, Stars will face Zambia with some shreds of confidence as they hope to return to the continental stage for the first time since Tunisia 2004. Dennis Oliech and other foreign-based players are expected to join Stars’ camp that also has new faces in the technical bench after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) appointed Sofapaka and Harambee Starlets coach David Ouma to Bobby Williamson’s bench. Willis Waliaula was also confirmed as team manager.
IN MY NEXT LIFE: Isaiah Kiplagat is planning to spend his free time writing a memoir detailing his over 40 years administration in sports once he retires.
I will spend my retirement writing memoirs, Kiplagat Isaiah Kiplagat is planning to spend his free time writing a memoir detailing his over 40 years administration in sports once he retires from Athletics management at the end of this month. Kiplagat who returned to Athletics Kenya (AK) yesterday after three months leave has ruled out any possibility of him going for another elective post in the coming continental athletics elections in 2019, even as he is expected to vacate AK offices at the end of the All African games on September 19. “At my age I will not be running around seeking some post. I will continue serving athletics as an honorary member at IAAF or even AK but I will not ask them to do so, if they want me they will
come for me,” said Kiplagat during his address to the Press at Riadha House Monday. “I will take three years to concentrate on writing my memoir and I can promise you it will make a good read. I’ve done a lot in my 40 plus years in sports administration and all that information need to be documented,” added the chairman whose reign at AK in the built up to his three month sabbatical was clogged in controversy after a splinter group led (then) by AK Nairobi branch chairman, Bernabas Koris and Paul Mutwi called for his exit from the seat he’s been holding for the last 22 years. In his characteristic style, Kiplagat who addressed the local Press for the first time since his flopped bid to ascend to IAAF vice-Presidency
hit a snag before losing the IAAF Council Membership, hit out at the government for poor preparations for the 2017 World Youth Championship to be hosted in Nairobi. “I am very proud of my achievement as AK president. It during my tenure that Kenyan managed to host three International events (World Cross Country championship in 2007, Africa Championship 2010 and 2017 World Youth Championship) but the 2017 event has its own problems,” Kiplagat who led a team of Kenya delegation that won the bid last year said. “Up to now there is no secretariat, there is no warm-up track because the one at Nyayo is worn out and need to be replaced. The ministry
of Sports must take the lead and ensure that the whole exercise is not behind schedule,” added Kiplagat who also blamed the government for his failed attempt to secure IAAF seats. “I was not feeling well on the run up to the election and so I didn’t campaign as was expected but if you look at my competitors, they were all over. Am not trying to blame somebody for my loss but IAAF elections are very competitive and require government (financial) support which I never got,” added Kiplagat who was quoted as having accused Hassan Wario, Sports Cabinet Secretary for his failed bid after he pointed at the Minister for having lobbied other affiliate federations not to vote for him in the election held last month in China.
Local football bodies in fresh row over league size Just when Kenyans thought that the thrilling drama starring Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and costarring Kenya Premier League (KPL) was coming to an end, a new episode is out. There were reports that FKF Annual General Meeting (AGM) had endorsed a proposal to increase the number of clubs at the top tier league to 18 from the current 16 but KPL in a press statement Monday quickly denied those reports. That pronouncement may elicit old war between the two bodies fighting f o r the ownership of the league.
According to FIFA rules, top tier leagues should be run by local federations but that is not the case for Kenya. Here, the league is owned and run by a limited company formed during the wrangles that rocked Kenyan football in late 90’s and early 20’s. FKF has been trying to wrestle KPL to relinquish the ownership of the league, something that forced FIFA to intervene early this. Nyanweya led FKF was rooting for an 18-member club while KPL stuck their ground with 16, arguing that it’s costly to have an 18-club league due to dwindling resources. “Regarding agreements reached during the FKF (AGM) on Friday, misleading information
has evidently been given to and reported in the media concerning the number of teams in the Kenyan Premier League next year,” Jack Oguda, KPL CEO said in a statement to newsrooms. “A key item at the AGM was the reinstatement of the Kenyan Premier League as the top-tier league which was agreed without conditions during the AGM. The agenda item read as follows; …That if deemed fit, the General meeting recognises Kenyan Premier League Limited as the entity mandated by Football Kenya Federation to run and manage the top tier league within the pyramid of Football Kenya Federation.
Malkia Strikers beat Algeria to record first win in FIVB World Cup The Kenya national women’s volleyball team finally posted their first win in the FIVB 2015 World Cup in Japan after enduring a seven-match winless streak. Malkia Strikers floored their perennial rivals and the other Africa representatives Algeria in the early morning match which came barely 13 hours after they lost their seventh match to China on Monday. Kenya’s 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-11) win over Algeria is the second in five appearances and a fourth against Algeria this year, two of them being a group and final match at the women’s Africa Nations Championship and group three FIVB Grand Prix match in Australia in June. Kenya has so far lost to Cuba, Dominican Republic, Argentina, China, Japan, USA, Russia in the last two groups held in
Tokyo and Okayama. The last round will take place in Komaki where they will face South Korea on September 4th, then play Serbia on September 5 before winding up their month-log stay in Japan with a match against Peru. The Peru clash will be very important for both teams, more so Peru who registered their only win of their last appearance in 2007 against Kenya before David Lung’aho and his charges erased that with a historic win at the Grand Prix final last June when they beat them 3-0 to win the country and Africa’s first ever Grand Prix trophy. Lung’aho who is facing rough times with the national team currently praised his side for the win even as a section of fans have started questioning his tactical approach to crucial games. “It was important to win. We’ve lost the last six (seven) matches and winning the
first match in the World Cup is a big plus for us and it will give us motivation as we proceed to the next matches. We know we still have a chance of winning a few more matches and that’s our primary goal,” said Lung’aho in a post-match interview with FIVB after a win against Algerian team B. Algerian coach Henni Abdelhalim blamed the loss to poor reception and preparation ahead of the championship. “I think we can’t compare their preparation with ours. I think they (Kenya) didn’t stop between camps and competition for six months. We’ve only had one month with our B team. We know Kenya have a good serve and they used it today and it was very difficult for us. Our reception was bad today,” he noted.

World-beating athletes return to heroes’ welcome From Back Page Upon their arrival, they all dashed into the two white Limos, abandoning the caravan that was provided by the Government on the day that Ezekiel Kemboi pronounced that he ran his last world championship in Beijing. The day was also marked by ugly scenes as the crowd that literally brought JKIA to a standstill as pickpockets and petty thieves took advantage of the moment pilfer from Kenyans fighting to catch a glimpse of the athletes. There were also indecent scenes when Deputy President William Ruto’s security personnel allegedly roughed
up journalists who were contending for interviews with the athletes. Only three of the seven gold medallist boarded the plane that touched down Tuesday morning at JKIA to a warm reception by government officials, family members and the public. Vivian Cheruiyot (10,000m), two men who wrote history by winning the country’s first ever gold in their respective disciplines; Julius Yego (javelin) and Nicholas Bett (400m hurdles) were among the athletes that returned home. Yego became the first Kenya to win javelin gold at the World Championships
with the third longest throw ever of 92.72 metres that was also an African record and World lead while Bett who dumped volleyball for athletics also turned another page when he stunned the world when he stopped the clocks at 47:97 to erase a 43-year-old recold set by Uganda’s John Akii-Bua, the last African to have won this race way back in the 1972 Munich Olympics. World 5000m silver medallist Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku headed straight to Zurich for the September 3 Diamond League meet where he’ll compete in 1,500m.
