n MP now wants the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale to convene an informal meeting for Jubilee legislators ahead of the anticipated motion by the opposition seeking to have President Uhuru Kenyatta impeached. Suba MP John Mbadi has indicated that he will move the motion for debate next week. But Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi feels the motion could find most of his colleagues in the Jubilee alliance unawares. He now wants Duale to call for a Kamukunji saying such a meeting will help the coalition be better prepared on how to counter the
opposition during debate on the motion. “Majority leader should convene meeting so that we have a strategy on how we will argue with facts with Cord MPs over this impeachment motion,” Linturi said today. The lawmaker argued that it is improper for MPs to turn debates into shouting matches. As such, he wants the ugly scenes of last year when chaos marred debate on the Security Bill avoided. “We should not attempt to engage in a debate of shouting, Cord is good at that and they will definitely get the attention they want. We should prepare our points based on constitution and argue with facts,” Linturi said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

CIC raises fears as term ends The Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) has expressed fears that the constitutional gains made over the last five years could be watered down by personal interest of politicians. The commission whose term comes to an end by December this year has expressed concern that the gains that has been achieved in the monitoring and implementation of the Constitution risk being sacrificed on the altar of political, personal and other considerations. In a paid up advert to the dailies today, CIC said the debate on the extension of the commission’s term in the National Assembly was personalised, actuated by vendetta and uniformed by the merits or otherwise of the issues in question. “After having been given the privilege of serving Kenya in this critical season on this critical matter, we are concerned that the gains that have been achieved in the implementation of the Constitution stand the risk of being sacrificed on the altar of political, personal and other considerations,” read the statement in parts. As stipulated in the Constitution,
CIC term of expires five years after its establishment or after the full implementation of the constitution. Article Seven states that “CIC shall stand dissolved five years after its establishment or at the full implementation of the Constitution as determined by Parliament, or whichever comes sooner as determined by Parliament which can decide to extend its life” All the current commissioners have stated they will seek for an extension of their term a move they said is to allow Parliament to determine whether to retain the commission or any other institutional framework for facilitating and overseeing the implementation of the Constitution. Among the gains the commission stated it has achieved include enactment of legislations to implement the Constitution, improvement of service delivery in most counties and public involvement in governance. Some of the challenges the commission cited include, violation of Chapter Six on Leadership and Integrity and passing of new laws that negate the letter and spirit of the Constitution.
Kamukunji calls ahead of motion on impeachment From Page 1 He called on his colleagues in the Jubilee alliance to remain objective when arguing on the floor of the House when the motion is finally tabled before parliament. The opposition has accused President Kenyatta of gross violation of the constitution citing refusal to pay teachers their increased salaries as was awarded by the court. Mbadi who is also the mover of the motion said today that they are still fine tuning the motion and that it will be ready for debate next week. “We are just following the constitution that when a President violates a provision of the constitution then parliament can impeach him,” Mbadi said. The Suba MP cites Article 131 (2) of the Constitution saying that it requires the President, to amongst others, ensure protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. Mbadi argues that the President has been acting in blatant contempt of the courts of the Republic of Kenya as established by the law.
He said that the Judiciary is an independent arm of the government and its decision should not be interfered, something he accused the President of consistently ignoring. He accused President Kenyatta of deliberately trying to frustrate the ruling of the Labour Relations and Employment Court awarding teachers a 50-60 percent pay rise by failing to implement it. ‘Parliament is mandated by the constitution to review the conduct of the President, Deputy President and all other state organs and therefore as we are just playing our role as opposition MP,” Mbadi said. Linturi has however warned Cord that the procedure to impeach the President will not be a walk in the pack due to the tedious procedure involved. “I doubt if in the first place Cord has the numbers in the house to impeach the President and again no Jubilee MP can vote for them due to the nature of our politics,” Linturi warned.
RAISING ALARM: CIC Chairman Charles Nyachae delivers a speech at the University of Nairobi in a past event. The commission has today raised fears over the constitution implementation process as its term ends.
Man sentenced to hang for fatally stabbing wife
CONVICTED: Bernard Mwenga Kimaru at the Nairobi Law Courts where he was today sentenced to hang. He has 14 days to appeal the sentence.
A 39 year old man who stabbed his wife to death following a disagreement over the use of a mobile phone he had bought for her has been sentenced to hang. Justice Luka Kimaru convicted Bernard Mwenga Wilson for the murder of Caroline Mbeta who was stabbed 23 times inside her employer’s saloon on February 10, 2010. “The fact that you stabbed her repeatedly shows that you had an intention to kill. Witnesses saw you lick the blood from the murder weapon and you even attempted to stab yourself before you were overpowered by a mob who beat you senseless,” the judge said. He said a postmortem report indicated the woman was stabbed 23 times and had three litres of blood on her lungs. She bore multiple stab wound on her neck, stomach and head, the judge said. The judge also said that witness recounted that the couple had constant disagreements that resulted in fights before the fateful incident occurred. “You are a person who assaulted your wife on several occasions and on this one decided to murder her,’ the judge said. He said he had rejected the convicts defence that on the fateful day he was drank and could not have a recollection of what he had done or what had transpired. Wilson has 14 days to appeal the conviction.

NEWS BRIEFS Rwandan rebels jailed in Germany over Congo attacks A German court has sentenced two Rwandan rebel leaders for masterminding attacks on civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ignace Murwanashyaka and Straton Musoni were accused of ordering militias to commit mass murder and rape between 2008 and 2009. The trial took place under a law which allows the prosecution of foreigners for crimes committed outside Germany. It was hailed as a breakthrough in bringing Rwandan rebels to justice. Murwanashyaka, who is the leader of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), was given a 13-year sentence, while Musoni, his deputy, was sentenced to eight years. Musoni was however released immediately because of the time he has already spent in custody.
Mali militant to be arraigned before the ICC A suspected militant Islamist will appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday over the destruction of mausoleums in Mali’s ancient city of Timbuktu. Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi was handed over by Niger on Saturday, and will be the first person to be tried by the ICC over the conflict in northern Mali. “During the initial appearance hearing, the single judge will verify the identity of the suspect and the language in which he is able to follow the proceedings,” the ICC said in a statement. The mausoleums were shrines to Timbuktu’s founding fathers, who had been venerated as saints by most of the city’s inhabitants. But this practice is considered blasphemous by militant Islamists.
Hundreds escape from CAR prison Hundreds of inmates at a prison in the Central African Republic have escaped as a wave of violence left dozens dead. After a Muslim taxi driver was killed, clashes erupted on Saturday between Christian militia and Muslim groups. Members of a Christian militia known as the anti-Balaka attacked the prison on Monday, freeing hundreds of soldiers and militiamen. CAR has been wracked by violence since a mainly Muslim rebel group, the Seleka, seized power in March 2013.
Kenya, UK agree to reset ties after leaders meet President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday held bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister David Cameron in New York in a move to repair the relations between Nairobi and London which have soured since the former ascended to power in 2013. Both Uhuru and Cameron, who is set to visit Kenya next year, spoke on forging stronger security, economic and diplomatic pacts between the two countries. The meeting was in two parts with the second session being a one-toone between the two leaders. Cameron was categorical in his wish to see Kenya and the UK strengthen their long-standing relations. “It is time for us to reset our relationship and put the past behind us,” he said in the meeting that was also attended by Cabinet Secretaries Amina Mohamed (Foreign Affairs) and Joseph Nkaissery (Interior). The UK PM was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and five senior advisers. Cameron accepted President Uhuru’s invitation to visit Kenya in the first half of next year as a sign of closer diplomatic relations. President Uhuru had in July written to the British PM, inviting him to visit Kenya for talks on the relations between the two countries. At the same time, PM Cameron expressed his regrets over the harm

caused by UK travel advisories to the tourism sector at the Kenyan coast. He said the advisories are generated by an independent arm, but the UK government has made it known that negative effects travel alerts have on Kenya’s economy are working against the efforts by Kenya and other countries to defeat extremists. “We all agree that the effect of the advisories are what the terrorists actually want because it defeats the efforts to stop extremists
from seducing people into their activities,” said Cameron. President Uhuru said the travel advisories were counterproductive because they hurt the local economy and create unemployment which in turn makes it easier for extremists to recruit and brainwash jobless youth. “The advisories work contrary to our aim to defeat extremism and they have hurt the economy of the Coast region,” he said. Uhru said Kenya and Britain have cooperated on security matters and the same
engagements will be strengthened. The two leaders discussed regional efforts, in which Kenya is playing a major role, to bring back stability in Somalia, Southern Sudan and other areas in the greater Eastern Africa affected by conflicts. The two leaders agreed that there was need for concerted global effort to make Somalia stable by defeating the terrorists who have refused to give the country peace and pose threats to Kenya as well as other neighbouring countries.
AfricA leAders push for uN reforms The world has transformed since 1945 and the United Nations must acknowledge that Africa is no longer a colony but a continent of independent states. In the words of Robert Mugabe, chairman of the African Union, “the UN remains mired in a long by-gone era; an archaic hierarchy even though the world has changed.” In his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday, Mugabe and South African President Jacob Zuma both stressed the need for reform of the UN Security Council and process of appointing the UN Secretary General. “It is unacceptable and unjustifiable that more than one billion people in the African continent are still excluded as permanent members of the key decision making organ of the United Nations – the UN Security Council.” He said in contrast, a continent (Europe) with a population far smaller than

Africa was represented by three countries (France, Russia and the United Kingdom) on the UN Security Council. This is unfair,” Zuma protested. He pushed for further reform to the manner in which the UN Secretary General is appointed, saying the current process was not
inclusive. The current UN Secretary General Ban KiMoon steps down at the end of 2016. Already, Equality Now, an international organisation that campaigns for the rights of women and girls has launched an online campaign to promote female candidates to lead the UN. China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom
and the United States (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council) traditionally select a single candidate for ratification by a majority vote of the 193 member states. Countries may nominate candidates, but the Security Council makes the final decision behind closed doors without publishing any list of the contenders during the process or engaging in any discussion with member states. In his address Monday, Mugabe said Africa was keen to engage with nations that will help accelerate and deepen economic growth on the continent. “Africa is not looking for handouts but cooperation in areas such as infrastructure development,” he told delegates to the 70th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York. “We need an empowered continent, not one that is deprived,” the Zimbabwean leader emphasised.
“We call on the genuine friends of Africa and those who value justice to support Africa’s just and reasonable proposals… Nowhere does the UN charter arrogate to some to sit in judgement over others.” He said Africa rejects attempts “to prescribe new rights contrary to our moral beliefs; we are not gays! Confrontation and double standards will not help.” He demanded the immediate lifting of sanctions placed on Zimbabwe by the US and its NATO allies saying he did not understand what wrong his country has done. “We desire to live in harmony; we have peace and don’t want war. We are also against interference and regime change.” More on this story at

According to a September 10 circular which was released on Thursday last week, teachers would enjoy enhanced housing and hardship allowances. For the first time, they have also been given an annual leave allowance ranging from Sh4, 000 to Sh10, 000. Some perks would be determined by the region where a teacher works. For instance, teachers in Nairobi will enjoy higher housing allowances compared to their counterparts in other regions.

Government to make HIV medication affordable Kenya will spearhead efforts to keep HIV medication affordable and will make it a big agenda at the upcoming World Trade Organisation Summit to be held in Nairobi in December. President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement in New York when he chaired a high-level meeting on HIV and AIDS at the United Nations Headquarters. He said governments must ensure HIV commodities, particularly anti-retroviral medication, continue
to be available at affordable prices. “Since HIV treatment is for life, there is need to safeguard and extend HIV related trade and intellectual property flexibilities,” he said in his speech amid applause from the participants including Presidents and other dignitaries. President Kenyatta said Africa was on its way to start production of ARVs following a resolution reached through an African Union plan to end HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
He called for increased financing to bring HIV and AIDS to an end and added that Kenya’s commitment to this goal was proven. “Kenya, in recognizing the importance of the Global Fund as a financing mechanism contributed $2 million (more than Sh200 million) to the 2014 Global Fund replenishment. I urge partners to contribute generously and replenish the Global Fund,” he said. He said Kenya continues to prioritize and invest in preventive
HIV vaccine development as a key element of the globally acknowledged prevention revolution roadmap. “I urge my fellow leaders to make solid commitments for HIV,” said the President at the meeting which was also addressed by President Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi and Mali’s Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. At the conference, 11 year old Kenyan boy Elijah Lemayan got a standing ovation when he shared his passionate story as a survivor
of HIV and the challenges young people who have HIV face. UNAIDS Director, Mr Michel Sidibe, said he invited Lemayan to the UN Headquarters after he met him in Nairobi with President Kenyatta and was moved by his story. “I was moved to tears by his moving story and I told him he must come to New York and share his story with the whole world and not with Kenyans alone,” said Mr Sidibe.
Regional stability tops Uhuru’s UN address President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on the international community to do more to support regional efforts to stop the conflicts in Somalia, South Sudan and other countries in Africa. Uhuru made the call in his speech at the 70th United Nations General Assembly annual debate in New York last evening. President Kenyatta’s speech went big on Kenya’s determination to continue playing its role in fostering stability in the region as well as enhancing its international responsibility in improving global cooperation for the improvement of humanity. He rallied world leaders to take more concrete steps to support the restoration of stability in Somalia and South Sudan as well as other countries affected by instability. He assured that Kenya will remain steadfast in fostering peace and security in the region. “Kenya remains committed to continuing to play its rightful role in the global community and will remain an anchor of peace and security in our region and foster regional, continental and global cooperation for accelerated economic and social development for all,” he said. President Kenyatta made a passionate appeal to the UN and its member states not to turn their back on nations faced with long-running conflicts. He called for global support for Kenya’s fight against terrorism waged by extremists over Kenya’s role in supporting stability in Somalia.
IN PEACE APPEAL: President Uhuru Kenyatta addresses the UN General Assembly in New York last year. His speech at the assembly yesterday was dominated by calls for regional stability.
He said Kenya has continued to invest billions of shillings in the maintenance of regional peace and security while many Kenyans have lost their lives in its quest for peace. “Kenya therefore implores the global community, in particular the United Nations Security Council to shoulder its responsibility in a manner that has a direct impact to the resolution of those conflicts,” said the President negatively. President Kenyatta said Kenya will not abandon Somalia for many reasons including the fact that instability in the neighbouring country continues to affect Kenya. He said the links between the two nations demand that Kenya takes lead in ensuring
a stable Somalia for the benefit of the people of both countries. “Kenya and Somalia share strong historical, cultural and trading ties that have benefited both societies. Somalia remains a major concern to the international community and Kenya in particular, due to the longstanding crises and security situation,” said the President. He said the Kenya Defence Forces will not stop supporting the Somalia National Army within the Framework of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). “Despite the threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants on Kenya, we will stand firm
in support of the people of Somalia,” said the President. “Kenya therefore calls on the international community to support the government of Somalia in securing its territory.” President Kenyatta also stated that Kenya is concerned with the emerging crisis in Southern Sudan and welcomed the peace agreement recently signed to end the conflict. “Kenya urges the international community, especially the United Nations, to support the IGAD Plus Peace Initiative’s efforts geared towards the realisation of comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in South Sudan,” he said.

Manufacturer’s association in deal to fight counterfeits, bad tax plans
GENUINE PRODUCTS: A past campaign gathering by the anti-counterfeit authority. KAM has vowed in an agreement with TMEA to fight counterfeiting in the country.
The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has announced plans to establish tax reforms, crackdown on counterfeit products while providing trade and market information to local investors and entrepreneurs. KAM, together with Trademark East Africa (TMEA), have signed a two year agreement that will see an extension of a financial grant to the Association for supporting its advocacy work in the area of NonTariff Barriers, Standards and Counterfeits, KAM Chief Executive Ms. Phyllis Wakiaga has said. “TMEA’s keenness to support
TB body offers local NGOs Sh6.3 million in funding The Stop TB Partnership has urged local nongovernmental organisation (NGOs) to apply for Sh6.3 million funding as part of the seventh round of an initiative dubbed the Challenge Facility for Civil Society (CFCS). The CFCS provides grants to technically-sound and innovative interventions that support the engagement of communities in national tuberculosis (TB) responses. “The Stop TB Partnership’s goal is to strengthen community responses that are integrated and part of
a comprehensive response to TB,” explains the group’s spokesperson Divya Sharma. The deadline for applications is October 16, 2015. Interested parties are advised to visit “stoptb.org” for details. Grants of up to $60,000 (Sh6.3 million) will be awarded for a 12 to 15 month period. The group has said that an applying party must have documentation to confirm that it is, in fact, a registered organisation. The organisation must demonstrate that it has been operating for at least one full
year. The organisation must also have experience working on HIV or TB and must have a track record in strengthening community engagement. To qualify for the grant, interested applicants must complete the online application form given on the website. The grant comes at a time when Kenya has lost thousands of lives to TB, which, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), is a preventable disease.
Kenyan SMEs in Konza to benefit as foreign counterparts Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are set to benefit from trading with their American counterparts who have been given an operating space at the Konza Technopolis. This follows the signing of a partnership between the Konza Technopolis Authority and an American business lobby group that will position Kenyan SMEs to better compete in the regional and international market. The latest entrant is America’s National Business league, a national federation of individuals, firms and associations engaged in business enterprises. Through the establishment of Small and Medium enterprises Development Programme, Dr. Malcolm Beech, National
Business league Vice President, says that they will assist SMEs across Kenya and the US in accessing and obtaining business development opportunities through export promotion, joint ventures, strategy alliance and direct investment. According to Konza Development Authority CEO Eng. John Tanui, there are more than 200 expressions of interest from local and international investors who are expected to form the bulk of the pioneer investors and partners in Konza city. A majority of these have been drawn from private sectors particularly telecom operators and leading banks who want to locate their data centres and other ICT investments in Konza.
KAM has carved out a productive space for advocacy and engagement with the necessary sections of the government,” she said. According to Dr. Chris Kiptoo, TMEA Kenya Country Director, the partnership aims to support KAM’s policy and advocacy work as well as engage relevant authorities to address challenges encountered during the first phase of the partnership. “We are looking into implementing advocacy campaigns especially related to Non-Tariff Barriers, Trade in Counterfeits, Anomalies in the Common External Tariff (CET) and access to trade and

To realize a competitive business environment, Ms. Wakiaga emphasized on the need for intervention in areas of manufacturing. “Our manufacturing sector has remained stagnant at 11 percent of GDP over the past ten years. As a result, the number of formal jobs in manufacturing has grown at just 7 percent per year over the past four years. Our exports have stagnated at 15 percent of GDP, while imports have grown to 40 percent of GDP creating a trade imbalance hence revitalising industrial sector,” she said.

Apple Sold 13 Million iPhones in Weekend Debut Apple Inc. sold a record 13 million iPhones during the debut weekend of its latest handsets, as enthusiasts from Beijing to New York rushed to its stores to be the first with the new devices. Bloomberg reports, the company sold 10 million iPhones during the debut of the iPhone 6 and 6 plus last year, even though the world’s most populous country wasn’t part of the initial release. The average selling price for
an iPhone last quarter was Sh 70,000 billion translating to Sh 890 billion in revenue over the past 72 hours for Apple. The 13 million units sold “largely reflects available supply of iPhones, rather than underlying demand,” Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. wrote Monday. The company said earlier this month that sales would top last year’s 10 million record.
Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray Cos., predicted sales would be 12 million to 13 million, thanks to initial sales in China. “We view 13 million as a ‘bull case’ number from the weekend as bears were saying 10.5 million to 11 million was possible,” Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR & Co., wrote to investors. The firm estimated that China accounted for 2 million to 2.5
million units over the weekend, meaning “non-China iPhone 6s units were up roughly between 5 and 10 per cent verses its predecessor.” The new iPhones will be available in more than 40 additional countries beginning October including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Taiwan and available in more than 130 countries by year end.
Customer services help KCB Group soar ratings Following the assignment of a rating from global ratings agencies, Standard & Poor’s (S&P) and Moody’s, KCB has promised to support its clients, customers and businesses across Africa to boost economic growth across the region. The two agencies have assigned KCB Group top ratings and a stable outlook, at a time when the lender is increasing its penetration in the retail market. “We continue to leverage on innovation to simplify access to financial services, focus on customer experience and boosting capital buffers to build an African business for the future,” KCB Group chief executive Joshua Oigara, said following the announcement. “We sit at the epicentre of shepherding Africa’s economic transformation agenda,” he added. Standard and Poor’s Ratings Services has given the Bank a “B+/B long-term and short-term” credit rating while Moody’s has assigned KCB a rating of “B1 stable.” The Bank states that its recent partnership with mobile phone services provider Safaricom to offer loans through the mobile phone, KCB Mpesa, has been “a
BIZ BRIEFS China: more aid, debt forgiveness to poor economies The Chinese government has promised to provide billions in aid and debt forgiveness to the world’s poorest nations as the country’s President Xi Jinping continues to position his nation as a global superpower. Xi said Beijing, China’s capital, would set up a development fund with an initial pledge of US$2 billion (Sh210 billion) to help developing countries realise a wideranging, post-2015 global sustainable development agenda. The President was speaking during his first address to the United Nations in New York. These developments come at a time when China has been heavily investing in Kenya over the past few years. China’s Development Bank, a leading international lender, has in the recent past, signed special loan contracts with more than 31 countries including Kenya, Angola, Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique and Ethiopia. “The projects supported by the loans have directly and indirectly created 11,020 and over 390,000 local job opportunities respectively and promoted China-Africa trade volume over US$ 311 million (Sh32.7 billion),” the Bank said in a statement.

game-changer” in the financial services sector. Since its launch in March, the platform has provided banking experience to more than 4 million new customers, with at least Sh4 billion disbursed in loans. “We see this proposition as the next frontier for our growth and the best bet in deepening financial inclusion as the bank continues to play a bigger role in the financial services sector across the East African region and beyond,” said
Oigara. The favourable rating, KCB’s management said, gives the bank a bigger headroom to borrow funds for expansion and also affirms its growing role as a regional lender and a sustainable business. In their assessment, the agencies said the rating reflected KCB’s “credit strength, solid profitability metrics supported by strong domestic franchise, strong capital buffers, a well structured deposit-based funding model and high level of liquid assets.”
“We believe KCB is well-placed to maintain its revenue stability in the context of rising external shocks and weaker domestic economic growth. While we anticipate credit losses to rise, we also expect the Group’s access to low-cost deposits and well established corporate lending franchise to support more stable credit losses and stronger margins than the industry average over the next 12-18 months,” said Standard & Poor’s in a statement.

Kenya is set to sell a five-year infrastructure bond worth Sh5 billion in October exclusively on mobile phones for the first time in its recorded history, the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) said Monday. It has emerged that the NSE is currently targeting more retail investors at a time when young entrepreneurs are increasingly being encouraged to bank on the bourse. Consumers as young as 18 years of age have already purchased shares on the exchange following a campaign dubbed the NSE Investment Challenge. The bond will go on sale on October 16, 2015, allowing investors to buy a minimum of Sh3, 000 worth of debt investments. This is significantly less than the Sh50, 000 minimum standard used for Treasury bonds, the NSE said.

efore Tusker Project Fame lost its glory as the top East African reality show, not many people payed attention to the live dance competition show known back then as Sakata, and during its pioneer season, was branded a show for high school kids and campus freshmen. F i v e seasons later and the
show which has now evolved into Sakata Mashariki, incorporating all East African countries, has become a household name creating much hype and buzz especially on social media. The sixth season, which is a coming to an end has been termed the best sequel of the show yet, with notable improvement on details such as stage design, lighting, hosting and judging. The annual show has in the past utilized the mentorship and judgement skills of renowned dancers and entertainers such as Wyre and Sanaipei Tande, but the sixth season has seen the best judge combination yet: Judge Jo1, Renee and Jesse. After intensive auditions all around East Africa, 32 dance teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar qualified into the Sakata Mashariki
heats, all putting their best foot forward in the race to the 1 Million shillings grand prize. Through stiff competition, refined judgement, public criticism, difficult battles and challenges, the original 32 crews were eliminated one at a time as the show progressed through the quarter finals in August to the semifinals where out of the original 32 teams, only the crème de la crème namely IDU, Zonex, The Crew, Shakers, WT, T Africa, Dabz, Zawadi, Pillars, le Afrique, and Jets made it thus far. The semifinals were held in two phases in September, where the list was narrowed down to six finalists who are now set to make their final attempt at joining dance champs such as FBI on the best dancers books. Pressure is currently at peak for IDU, Zonex, The Crew, Shakers, WT and
T Africa, who are the finalists for the Sakata Mashariki season 6, and the final battle is expected to be the hottest so far with each team out to draw blood and a whole lot of cash. The sixth Season of Sakata Mashariki has had several highlights, most notably when Judge Jo1 hit the stage for a dance performance despite her expectant condition, as well as the evolution of dance challenge which artistically showcased Sakata Mashariki’s creativity and passion theme while serving as a criteria for dance crew elimination. Meanwhile Kenyans are enjoying ‘hair raising’ moments using #MyUnkemptHair in anticipation for the Sakata Mashariki grand finale, with a once in a lifetime opportunity to show off their head tresses in their natural state, from silky smooth to steel wool coarse!

he Kikuyu are the largest community in Kenya. According to a popular myth, all creation began around Mt. Kenya. The icy peak was where Ngai (God) lived. The mountain became Kirinyaga where the creator lived and it is here that Gikuyu was called forth. Gikuyu is the father of the Kikuyu people. Ngai told Gikuyu that all the land around Kirinyaga would be his and his children’s. He was sent to grove fig trees and it is here that he found Mumbi. Gikuyu and Mumbi had nine beautiful daughters who they named, Wanjiku, Wanjiru, Wanjeri, Wambui, Wangari, Wacera, Waithera, Wairimu and Nyambura. These girls grew into beautiful women who went to the lands around Kirinyaga in search of men so that they could bear children. They begged their father to appeal to Ngai for help. When he finally did this, he was commanded to make a sacrifice among the figs and light a fire. Sacrificing a goat beneath the fig tree is still considered a way to call the rain in times of drought. After the sacrifice, he plunged in nine sticks into the fire and prayed. The fire burst into a big flame where nine strong men emerged. He gave thanks to Ngai and took the nine men home where they married his daughters. Each daughter made her homestead and as a result, nine separate clans of the Kikuyu emerged. The unity of the clans was christened Nyumba ya Mumbi in honor of their mother. The Kirinyaga peak has since remained to be the sacred home of Ngai.

Faith is a selfmade queen of Do It Yourself world .She can make a masterpiece from any waste material. She recently did wedding décor with DIY as its theme! Faith has always been interested with all things that are art related. “I always had an interest in art, I appreciated it, was fascinated by it but I never really tried creating it because I didn’t see myself as an artist, this was also because I have always considered myself to be a curious person so where I could understand/ observe or learn more I took the
opportunity. To be honest I started out with making jewelry working with small pieces. My mother pushed me to set and learn from a neighbor who used to make jewelry.” She tells X Access. It was after this that her curiosity got her trying her hand at other things and as a result, ended up making house décor which in turn landed her a deal for wedding décor. Faith describes her work as creative, functional pieces that use inexpensive or recyclable materials. She uses materials that are affordable and available. The materials range from glass or plastic bottles to wood, metal, wires and fabric. Seeing as every piece is unique and different, there is no specific time attached to how long she takes to complete an item. Some pieces take a couple of hours while others take days or even weeks. “I get my inspiration from everywhere, when I’m working in the streets, while watching TV, from seeing other people’s work

but mostly online. With Apps like pinterest and houzz we cannot say that we lack inspiration.” When she started out her greatest challenge was the fact that she did not have a lot of training mainly because her art is self-taught. Places where she can learn skills such as carpentry, welding, sculpting and learning mixed media art is another challenge. Unlike other artists, Faith does not think that her work is special but rather hopes that it serves as a platform to inspire others like her. “There is a saying that says a good artist copies but a great artist steals. With art I think it’s all about interpretation allowing others to be inspired by how you see the world or just the simple things in life,” she adds. The art industry is full of talented artists she says but people need to appreciate its value. She thinks that artists need more institutions so that they can be taken seriously.

For Justin Bieber, the past few years have been defined by arrests, scandals and public attempts to soften his image and reboot his career. Now the 21-year-old superstar has shared the source of his redemption: Christianity. “I just wanna honestly live like Jesus,” he said in a new interview. “Not be Jesus – I could never – I don’t want that to come across weird. He created a pretty awesome template of how to love people and how to be gracious and kind. If you believe it, he died for our sins.” The singer clarified that he’s “not religious,” as he’s bothered by the “really weird stuff going on at churches” and the holier-than-thou attitude of certain Christians. But he emphasized that his life has been transformed by faith.
A situationship is defined as a form of romantic involvement between two people subconsciously intended for fun’s sake but more often than not, resulting in the development of strong unreciprocated feelings of attachment by one party. Scenarios which require you to introduce the other person are always uncomfortable for you because you are not sure what to refer to them as. ‘Friend’ sounds wrong, given all the things you do together and ‘boy/girlfriend’ sounds too serious. When other people ask you what exactly the two of you have going on and your farfetched response is “we are taking it one day at a time,” then you are definitely in a situationship!

For situationships, indepth communication is not considered essential except when planning for meet ups. Analyze which mode you most often use to communicate with your partner and if it turns out that you are more of a texting couple where face to face communication is not pertinent, then this is one situationship telltale.
In your mind, they are not really ‘the one’ One way to know that you are caught up in a situationship is if the person you are
currently involved with does not exactly fit your perfect guy or girl description, but you have opted to abide by the “half an apple is better than none” motto. In short, you are knowingly settling until the real deal comes along to avoid loneliness and dry spells.
You have adopted vampire life

Another sign of being in a situationship is if you notice that you only meet during odd hours where no one else is likely to catch sight of you
because deep down, neither of you want your friends and families to know what you have been up to in your personal lives.
No prospects for the future
In real relationships, plans for the future such as kids and join investments pop up here and there but in situationships, the romance and intimacy are just for the present and you do not really know much about the other person other than the basics such as where they live and work.

Three months on, I am over the betrayal after spending countless nights crying myself to sleep then last week, he reemerged asking for forgiveness and attempting to reignite the spark. I got over the pain of his infidelity but I still love him. What should I do?
- Annett
Dear Annett,
Sorry for what your boyfriend put you through, and congratulations for having managed to rise above the betrayal. Before making any rush decision, engage your ex in a recap of the events leading to your break up in order to find out why he cheated in the first place and also why he was
rude and arrogant towards you. In this situation, I advise you to trust your gut and if taking him back is what feels right, go for it, although you need to take it slow, steadily trying to discern the man’s real intentions with you this time round. All the best.

Facts may reveal themselves slowly, so don’t make a major decision about something until you have all the relevant data. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Don’t be surprised if there’s conflict in this part of your life. If you’re involved in a relationship, consider this bump in the road a challenge that will make you stronger and bond you more tightly your partner. If you aren’t with someone, it may be for the best. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Love is on your side. You’ll find that as long as you stay true to your inner strength, you’ll come through with shining colors regardless of the events that transpire. Engage in activities and situations that promote your strengths instead of your weaknesses. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Feel the answer from deep within instead of trying to decipher it. Sink into the mood of the environment instead of trying to break it down into little compartments that you can analyze and categorize. Consider the whole instead of the pieces. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 Your mind is especially keen today, Taurus. You’ll find that it communes well with your anxious heart. Someone may have recently stepped into your life and now it’s time to engage with this person on a deeper level. It’s wise to take things one step at a time. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Bask in each new day, Gemini. Do your best to spread your sunshine, but don’t be surprised if someone challenges the way you think. There are stubborn forces out there working to steer you in the direction that they’d like you to go. Make sure that you’re the one who remains in control. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Something has sparked the detective in you and you’re anxious to probe, inquire, and seek the truth in every situation. Your grounded, stable, and practical approach will be your greatest asset. Make sure to let someone else be the martyr today. You’re the one who needs to take control. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 You may go to extremes from one side of the spectrum to the other. Work with this energy by recognizing the value in both situations, putting your rational mind aside and letting your heart be the final judge. Something beautiful and comforting will probably end up catching your eye. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Your mind may be intertwined quite delicately with your heart, but the good news is that they’re working harmoniously together. You’re able to stand back and see the rational, logical side of your feelings as well as the emotional, tender side of your thoughts. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 You’re so wrapped up in your adventures that you’re unaware of other people who could use more attention. In your endless search for something bigger and better, you may have lost contact with the wonderful things you already have in front of you. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 You should find that things relating to these aspects of your life are going well. Your mind is much more penetrating than usual, and your search for deeper knowledge can be quenched with less effort than might usually be required. Your creative spirit is anxious to find an outlet for adventure. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 When it comes to love and romance, don’t rush things. Patience is needed now more than ever. People are much more emotional than usual. Don’t be surprised if you or someone you know becomes territorial when a stranger steps on his or her private turf.

SPORTS BRIEFS Iran now under fire over gender issues in soccer Iran’s national football women’s team has come under fire this week after it emerged that eight players of the group were not females. The eight players have been playing with Iran’s female team without completing sex change operations according to an official quoted on the Al Arabiya News channel. The proportion of players in the team who were born men was not known. In 2014, it was reported by UK paper, The Telegraph that four footballers from Iran’s national women’s team were men. Some of the unnamed players have played as men their entire career, but only revealed their gender on the last day for the unethical scandal which is blamed on the Iran’s football governing body. Doubts regarding the gender of some apparently female players in Iran have existed for a long time, with suspicions raised about a goalkeeper back in 2010.
Kenyan wins men double in US college games Kenya’s top seed and US-based Ishmael Changawa won the men’s doubles USTA/ ITA Central Regional Championship over the weekend at the Seminole State at the Oklahoma City Tennis Centre. Changawa teamed up with his College mate Guy Oryl Iradukunda in a gruelling match that lasted over two hours to defeat a team of Lumeta/Tidimane 6-2; 5-7; 7-5 to win the final. Changawa’s Trojan team mate Iradukunda had earlier eliminated him in the men’s singles final 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win over teammate Changawa, two times Kenya Open champion is in the US on a tennis scholarship at Seminole State College, the college which failed to release him for the just concluded African Games in Congo, Brazzaville. In the men’s singles, the two players had split the set after Iradukunda won the first set 6-4, but Changawa, younger brother to Shufaa (Changawa) came back to win the second set 7-6 before Iradukunda grabbed the final one.
W. Indies fires cricket coach over named team West Indies have suspended cricket head coach Phil Simmons after he criticised the selections for the tour of Sri Lanka. The 52-year-old, who only took charge in March questioned the omissions of all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard from the one-day squad. “It is disappointing from the fact that I have not got the best 50-over ODI squad that we can select,” he said. Eldine Baptiste, a member of the selection panel, will now take charge of the tour which starts on October 14. A media release from West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said Simmons’ comments appeared to “question the legitimacy of the selection process”. It added: “As a result, the management of the WICB has taken action to suspend the head coach, pending probe into the issue. “The coach will not now travel with the team on the tour of Sri Lanka.” Bravo and Pollard have not featured in the ODI squad since they were dropped for the tour of South Africa in December 2014 after a tour of India was aborted because of pay dispute.
KHU to blame for botched hockey league match Lack of water at the City Park Hockey stadium caused abandonment of premier league match between Kenya Police and Strathmore Sunday evening. It was the incompetence on the part of Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) who failed to pump water into the reservoir from where it is sprinkled on to the playing surface to sog the rubber playing turf which cannot be used when it’s dry to avoid injuries. The incident left players and coaches fuming after the match at the City Park Hockey Stadium Sunday. The two team checked to the Astro Turf at City Park ready to take on each other. Police was looking for a win that would otherwise see them open a five point lead off second placed and defending champions Butali Sugar Warriors (formerly Kisumu Simba). A win for Strathmore on the other hand could have seen the student continue pilling more pressure on Green Sharks who are currently third on the log with 24 points. The much-anticipated clash pitting the fiercest rival who once dominated the league before Kisumu Simba got their mega deal with Butali Sugar in the top tier league did not take place after KHU turf attendant failed. “We have about nine players in the national team from both teams and we cannot take chances by playing of a hard surface unless the union want us to send injured players to the international tournament,” said Meshark Senge who is also the men’s national team head coach. “This is something they (KHU) knew and they should have made arrangement to have water for the surface. Such kind of incompetence

should not be tolerated at this level,” he added. His police counterpart, Kenneth Kaunda who was looking forward to the match he attended in person despite not feeling well in the built up to the game went straight to the waiting car after the match was called off, without uttering a word to the press. One option KHU had was to pay Sh3700 a lorry to water vendors but sources familiar with the matter Hockey hinted to X-Sport that
the union owes the vendors some undisclosed amount from their previous services. The match was rescheduled to a later date. Police are still top of the table with 33 points from 12 matches, two better than Butali. Both teams have only lost once each with Butali losing to police when went down to Western Jaguars in Kakamega. Sliders kept pace with runaway leaders Telkom Orange when they registered their biggest win of the
season with a 10-1 win over Mount Kenya University on Saturday. Orange stretched their lead in the women’s national league to nine points following am a massive 13-0 win over Daystar University. Multimedia beat Technical University and Kimathi University with identical 3-2 wins but that still left them in the middle of the men’s national pool B which is currently held by new comers Bay Club f Kisumu.
Out-of-favour Ayimba to name Shujaa, Morans squads Kenya Sevens Head Coach Benjamin Ayimba will tomorrow name the Shujaa and Morans squads that will play in the 20th edition of the Safari Sevens at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani. The side has been in non-residential training as they prepare for the tournament which will serve as a build-up for the Olympic qualifiers set for South Africa in November. Ayimba will be under a lot of pressure to name the two squad after his appointment as the Kenya Sevens head coach was revoked. Six more sport disciplines possible inclusion in 2020 Tokyo Olympics Skateboarding, surfing, baseball/ softball, sport climbing and karate have been recommended for inclusion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The five new sports would take place over 18 events and include 474 more athletes. Games hosts are being given a chance to bring in one or more sports popular in their country to boost ratings and attract greater sponsorship. The International Olympic Committee will make a final decision next August. Eight sports from a total of 26 federations were shortlisted, with bowling, squash and wushu missing out.
“This package of events represents both traditional and emerging, youthfocused events, all of which are popular both in Japan and internationally,” said a statement from the Tokyo 2020 organising committee. International Surfing Association president Fernando Aguerre said: “Surfing embodies a cool, playful lifestyle that would add a completely new element to the programme, helping the games reach new fans through live action and stunning broadcast opportunities.” Baseball and softball, united under the World Baseball Softball Confederation
(WBSC), returnd to the Olympics for the first time since 2008 hosted in Asia. The Professional Squash Association (PSA) remain hopeful of a reprieve by the IOC in August 2016. Baseball: Combined bid of men’s baseball and women’s softball. Both sports hugely popular in Japan. Governing body says it has a total of 65 million people playing in more than 140 countries - the majority of whom are young children and teenagers. Katrate which traces its root to Japan has never been contested at the Olympics unlike Judo, its fellow home-grown martial art which first joined in 1964.
Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi in action in a league match. Messi sustained a knee injury in the last match which Barcelona won to go top of La Liga standings. He scored five goals when the two teams met in 2011/12 and Barça won 3-1 in Germany and 7-1 at Camp Nou.
Messi-less Barca host Leverkusen as Chelsea visit Mourinho’s home
Champions League holder Barcelona will be all out in search of their first win in the competition when they welcome Bayern Leverkusen at Camp Nou tonight but without star Leonel Messi. Messi, who scored a total of 60 goals and set up 28 more in 60 appearances to help Barca capture a Primera Division, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble last season, hurt his left knee in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Las Palmas and will be side-lined for two months. Barca whose defence has been haemorrhaging goals with only two clean sheets in last 10 matches, leading to a poor start of the season were held to a 1-1 draw by AS Roma in the group opener who will face BATE Borisov beaten 4-1 by Bayern in the first match. Over half of Barca’s squad is suffering from some kind of physical problem in just two months of this season. Messi will be side-lined for at least seven weeks from ligament tear sustained by club superstar. Defender Thomas Vermaelen and
Rafinha Alcântara are also out though the Catalans’ coach Luis Henrique will have Jordi Alba and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo who are fit again after being sidelined for three weeks with a calf and back problem. Jose Murinho will return to the Portuguese City of Porto for the first time in eight and a half years since he parted ways with side he lead to their Champions League trophy in 2004. Mourinho will be back to his home city, but this time round with his struggling Chelsea, 14 on the English Premier league standing with only two wins from seven matches when he faces Porto away. Chelsea had a perfect start in this competition after beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0 at the Stanford Bridge two weeks ago, but the players who have failed to impress in the domestic competition have been told to expect no preferential treatment if the club’s poor start to the season continues. Mourinho has left John Terry out for the
past two Premier League games, while Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas have been criticised. Terry, 34, has started only the League Cup win at Walsall since a 3-1 defeat at Everton on September 12. Mourinho will have striker Diego Costa available in Porto as his three-match ban does not apply to European games. Arsenal manager Arsen Wenger has set only nine point target in home matches and that dream will be tested by visiting Olympiakos. Wenger, who lost his opening fixtures 2-1 to Dinamo Zegreb will be without suspended striker Olivier Giroud, Jack Wilshere (calf/shin), Tomas Rosický (knee) and Danny Welbeck (knee). Others side-lined include Francis Coquelin (knee), Mathieu Flamini (hamstring), Mikael Arteta (muscle) are also doubtful. Both teams won their domestic fixture last weekend with Olympiakos beating Giannina 5-1 while Arsenal beat Leicester 5-2.

ormer Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech has been dropped from the squad that will face Mauritius in the first round of qualifiers for the 2018 Fifa World Cup on October 7. Once again Stars will have less than a week for preparation before the crucial match as has been the case in the recent past, something which saw them lose another important African Cup of Nation clash against Zambia in Nairobi early this month. In Kenya’s 2-1 loss to Zambia early this month, Oliech who started the match as the main striker only managed one shot on target. This dismal performance could have led to him being axed from the squad. Harambee Stars coach Bobby Williamson was blamed for his selection in the last assignment where he called up the club-less Oliech and Macdonald Mariga. The coach who is on a Sh2m salary a month also felt the wrath of fans for poor team selection, preferring to play Tusker’s winger Noah Wafula despite numerous errors. However, Wafula has also been dropped alongside Tusker’s duo Jesse Were and Humphrey Mieno.
