No respite as teachers strike enters second week today Pupils will be forced to stay out of school for longer as teachers unions and the government still cling to their hardline stance over the ongoing teachers’ strike which entered its second week today. The unions have accused the government of disobeying a court order that awarded them the 50 to 60 percent pay increase and have vowed not resume work until they are paid. The government on the other hand is talking tough and has warned striking teachers that they risk losing their jobs if they don’t report to work today. The Ministry of Education has already instructed all County Directors of Education to monitor daily school attendances of pupils and teachers, then file a report everyday by 4pm. Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’ in a circular yesterday told county officers to take a separate roll call for teachers who absent themselves from duty. “Liaise with the respective county directors of TSC who have already been instructed to ensure that all teachers, head teachers and principals of learning institutions are on duty supervising teaching and learning,” said Kipsang. The Teachers Service Commission has also instructed County Directors of Education to issue warning letters to striking teachers. In a memo, TSC acting Director of Teacher Management Mary Rotich asked the directors
to intensify monitoring of schools to ensure no teacher absconds duty. “Prompt action should be taken in all cases of professional misconduct,” she said. Teachers’ Service Commission chairperson Lydia Nzomo said that due to Friday’s court declaration that the strike which began last week is unprotected, any boycotting teacher is prone to disciplinary action. “Teachers who participate in an unprotected strike cannot claim the protection of employment laws when the employer commences disciplinary action including dismissal from the service,” she said. But Knut is sticking to its guns with chairman Mudzo Nzili telling teachers across the country to ignore the threats by TSC and proceed with the strike. KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has also dismissed the sack threats issued by TSC saying the commission has no authority to sack teachers at this time since the court is handling the matter. Sossion called on all branch secretaries in the country to assemble at their respective county headquarters for demonstrations to symbolize continuity of the strike which started last week Kuppet Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima said TSC has no moral authority to order teachers back to work as it had ignored court order and therefore teachers should proceed with the countrywide demonstration as planned.
NO LEARNING: Classrooms across public schools remain deserted as teachers work boycott entered its second week today.

“I will hold bilateral talks with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. I will also launch Kenya’s new international brand campaign developed by the Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism, which will include the activation of a new digital content portal and supporting social media platforms, designed to be the focus for all international tourism and investment
enquiries. I will speak at a Business Forum hosted by Kenya which will offer Italian and Kenyan business communities a chance to explore opportunities for joint trade and investment ventures,” he said of the visit. “Milan is a primary tourismpromotion event and Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie, responsible for Tourism, Commerce and East African affairs, is the lead Kenyan minister at the event,” PSCU added.

The introduction of the new brand campaign and portal is expected to bring all of the ministry’s existing and future campaigns together to tell Kenya’s story with one shared voice. Kenya’s tourism sector is just coming off a difficult time that saw it hit hard by a slump in the number of foreign visitors as a result of terrorist activities. Major countries like the US and the UK whose nationals throng the Kenyan Coast and other tourist attraction sites across the country advised their citizens against traveling to Kenya. But those travel restrictions have since been lifted with Kenyan security forces dealing with the threat posed by terror. Among those in Mr Kenyatta’s delegation is Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago. The plane carrying the President and his delegation touched down at Ciampino G.B. Pastine International Airport in Rome shortly before 1am last night.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has maintained that teachers must undergo a job evaluation conducted by the commission just like other workers, before being awarded any pay increase. SRC Chairperson Sarah Serem said that teachers cannot be exempted from the job evaluation exercise. Serem said that the commission is working on maintaining wage bill at a manageable level hence the current pay increment as ordered by Supreme Court cannot be effected. “As much as we are not opposed to the pay increment for the teachers, we must also ask ourselves where the decision if effected will place this country in terms of wage bill which already at the moment is above 50 percent,” Serem said. The SRC Chairperson argued that teachers’ salaries and allowances had already been harmonised and effecting the pay increase will lead to workers from other sectors demanding the same. “We are clearly doing our mandate as enshrined in the constitution, by allowing the wage bill to go beyond control we will have failed Kenyans and not lived up to the spirit of the constitution,” Serem said. The Serem led commission has been battling with the Supreme Court decision that requires TSC to honour the Court of Appeal directive that the 50 to 60 percent
pay rise. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has opposed job evaluation by SRC saying it’s only Teachers Service Commission that is mandated to carry out job evaluation for public schools teachers. KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has called upon SRC to respect the Constitution and the constitutional limits of its mandate and to stop causing confusion. He said the Employment and Labour Relations Court had made it clear that it is the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and not the Salaries and Remuneration Commission that is mandated to carry out job evaluation for public school teachers. “No evidence has been tendered by TSC that it had considered even mildly the necessity of a job evaluation exercise to precede the negotiations and conclusion of a CBA. Serem however said that SRC has been conducting job evaluations together with other bodies like the Teachers Service Commission and the Public Service Commission. “We are not working in isolation of other commissions that also carry out job evaluations, therefore teachers should know that we will do the evaluation with TSC,” Serem said.

Heroes are empty-headed idiots, experts confirm People who carry out spur-of-the-moment acts of heroism are empty-headed idiots, research has confirmed. While such acts of selflessness are often admired, experts have found that there is no immediate logical reason to put one’s life in danger in order to save a stranger. New data indicates that people who save others from instantaneous danger do it out of instinct, without concern for their personal safety. NEWS BRIEFS Inquiry on death of students rejected An independent investigation into the disappearance of 43 Mexican students nearly a year ago rejected the government’s account of events. The government investigation said the bodies were burned at a rubbish dump hours after the students went missing. But the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights says it has found no evidence to support claims that the bodies were incinerated. The Mexican government has now ordered a new investigation. Shortly after the IACHR report was published, Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez said a new forensic team would return to the area where the bodies were supposed to have been burned. Relatives have always rejected the official investigation. They accused the authorities of covering up the alleged involvement of highranking officials and possibly the army in the killings.
Village sealed off in fresh Ebola scare
Nearly 1,000 people in Sierra Leone have been put under quarantine following the death of a 67-year-old woman who tested positive for Ebola. It comes five days into a six-week countdown for the country to be officially declared Ebolafree. The quarantine will last for three weeks, provided no new cases are recorded. More than 11,000 people have died since the start of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Correspondents in the capital, Freetown, say the authorities had been optimistic after a long period without any new Ebola cases and this caught them off-guard. Our correspondent says the quarantine is stricter than previous ones. It includes a curfew in which people will not be allowed to move from one house to another. Soldiers and police have been deployed to keep the quarantine in Sellakaffta, a village in Kambia on the northern border with Guinea. The World Health Organization and Sierra Leone’s health ministry are planning a vaccination programme for those who could have come into contact with the woman.
Cohesion Commission decries Kenyans’ hatred The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned deep-rooted hatred amongst Kenyan communities hampering unity. Chairman Francis ole Kaparo says it is time respective communities stopped blaming others for their woes because it is part of what heightens unnecessary tensions. “We have a lot of bitterness, communities hating one another because they probably think their miseries; their lack of development and their backwardness is a result of others having more resources than they do,” he said. He urged all Kenyans to live in harmony and cohesion with their neighbouring communities for the sake of the country’s future. Kaparo was speaking on Friday morning when the commission launched a five-year strategic plan that outlines how the country will be integrated. The plan seeks to address issues of economic injustices, negative ethnicity and slow implementation of the Constitution being the major challenges that continues to hamper cohesion and integration in the country. Other than addressing challenges, through the plan, NCIC hopes to promote national identity

Germany to free funds for miGrants Germany’s coalition government is to release its monies to help federal states and municipalities cope with record numbers of migrants. Critics at home have accused Chancellor Angela Merkel of creating a dangerous precedent by opening Germany’s borders. About 18,000 migrants arrived over the weekend after an agreement with Austria and Hungary to relax asylum rules. But Austria’s Chancellor, Werner Faymann, has said the emergency measures must come to an end. He said they would move step by step “towards normality”, after speaking to Chancellor Merkel and the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Sunday. Hungary had previously blocked migrants travelling to Western Europe, but dropped restrictions on Friday and shuttled people to the Austrian border. Germany’s announcement of extra funds came after talks between the leaders of Chancellor Merkel’s coalition. In addition to the €3bn about Sh340 billion) for the regions, they also agreed to speed up asylum application procedures, provide extra accommodation for newcomers, and allocate funds to pay benefits to new arrivals. Germany expects to receive 800,000 refugees and migrants this year, and wants to see the rest of Europe do more to help. But while Ms Merkel has become a hero to many
migrants and their supporters, conservative allies said she sent a “totally wrong signal” by allowing in the intake from Hungary. The interior ministry said the decision was an exception to help avert a humanitarian crisis. New arrivals in Germany were welcomed by smiling and cheering members of the public at train stations across the country. On Sunday, a group of cars driven by German and Austrian activists travelled to the Hungarian border to pick up migrants and distribute food. The migrants had travelled north through the Balkans - Greece, Macedonia and Serbia - before arriving at Hungary’s southern border, and on
to Austria and Germany. Syrians are the largest group travelling, followed by Afghans and Eritreans. A rift has developed within the EU over how to deal with the crisis. Hungary has accused Germany of encouraging the influx, and is pressing ahead with plans to tighten border controls and could send troops to its southern frontier if parliament agrees. It has opened a new reception camp for migrants in southern border village of Roszke, and is due to finish a border fence this month. The UN’s Refugee Chief Antonio Guterres said the crisis was “manageable” if member states could agree a joint plan.

The opening up of the platform aims to address shortcomings that were cited by users who raised concerns regarding the old M-Pesa system.

SFI was adopted a few months ago through the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA). At the time, KBA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Habil Olaka said that the principles of the Initiative are in line with international best practices, and will benefit both those working within the sector and consumers at large. Hi statements echo current initiatives by the banking sector to support financial inclusion by allowing millions of unbanked Kenyans to set up savings
accounts and use more secure models of cash transfer such as mobile banking. “In my view, the SFI is one of the most noble but also necessary innovations we have undertaken as the banking industry because economic development, social wellbeing and environmental protection are matters that concern any global citizen, and every commercial entity,” KBA Chairman and KCB Group CEO Mr. Joshua Oigara said in an earlier address. It has emerged that at the end of the first half of 2015, I&M Holdings had assets worth Sh189.3 billion, while Giro Commercial Bank had assets worth Sh16.21 billion. The government sought to encourage mergers in the sector by calling for an increase in the minimum core capital for commercial banks. However, parliament rejected that proposal last month, saying it would hurt the banking industry’s growth.

Dr. Mohammed is leading a team of industry players in the aggressive campaigns being part of the strategy to recover the sector. Together with the ASTA, Kenya is undertaking a series of meetings with the travel agents in

Mohammed said that the ASTA Global Convention is a unique opportunity to showcase what Kenya has to offer to the American market. “The ASTA Global Convention provides a good opportunity for travel agents to market tourist attractions in their countries to the American market and other travel agents from different parts of the world who will be present at the convention,” he added. The PS also pointed out that the convention provides an ideal opportunity to leverage the positive profile the country has enjoyed since the visit of US President Barack Obama two months ago. “Kenya is endowed with a variety of tourism attractions, which include pristine beaches, rich history, diverse authentic cultures, scenic beauty and wildlife. We are diversifying tourism products to supplement the traditional focus on the beach and safari products,” The PS told stakeholders in a briefing that was held in Washington. ho is Mis.tari? Mis.tari is a uniquely artistic brand that represents a singer / song writer and a creative designer. How would you best describe your music? My music is inclined to the fusion of pop and hip-hop genres though I am a versatile (broad) musician, as I like to experiment with different tastes of music. Tell us about your obsession for fashion and what plans you have for the fashion industry? Yaaaaaaas!!! Passion for Fashion! My obsession roots from the belief that ‘life is too short to wear boring clothes’. I think fashion is very interesting and a creative mode of expression. I have been working on Mis. tari cloth line, which is basically custom-made designer t-shirts and sweatshirts. The clothes will have a street urban feel to them, and will be musically inspired. So for all the people that love to look good just as much as they love music, watch out for this!! What or who is your source of inspiration? Fashion-wise, ‘We are pop culture’ by Christina Milian inspires me to create trendy outfits that are fun to wear and have a street feel. Musically, Toni Braxton is my alltime source of some good reasons to live my dream. She is very talented and her journey through music has always inspired me. Who produces your music and why? Ty4 of Press Play Productions. We work well together and he is very creative and has a good ear to great sounds. He is also very patient with the whole music making process which makes him produce quality music. What difficulties are you facing as a new act in the entertainment industry?
M u s i c Promotion. The niche for new talent in the entertainment industry is very limited and competitive, as people’s names in the industry sell more than the quality and content of their music which is quite sad. Mainly because it’s always important to give light to new sounds, which might save the Kenyan music industry that is battling airplay issues and inadequate content within artistes. You stand out as an artistic person, what other form of arts do you indulge in? I am a graphic designer by profession, and a hip-hop dance choreographer. I also have interests in photography and I take part as a model in such projects. Which artistes from our local music scene would you want to work with? Collo and Zonda. What do you aim to achieve with your music in the next 5years? I would want to have done an African tour of my music having established a firm foundation of my brand. I would also want to work with both African and International artistes such as Uhuru, Mo cheddah and Nicki minaj and be able to hold an annual Mis.tari Festival in order to celebrate music.

ost of us take meeting the same person at the same place every day for granted, but Nelson Murage and Mercy Njeri’s story of love will make you pay more attention to the people around you. Nelson and Mercy met in 2013 and started dating in March 2014. This was after the two met coincidentally at the same exact spot for several months, until Nelson decided to strike a conversation with Mercy. What started as a simple friendship led to Nelson deciding to propose to Mercy, who never saw it coming, as she explains to X Access, “We had gone to Thika Road Mall for some shopping then as we were leaving, it started raining. Nelson suggested we go back inside for some coffee, maintaining a curious smile and saying that the fact that it was raining was a good thing. He left me sitted at the coffee shop then came back wielding a ring. I was speechless and when he proposed, I said yes.” Usually, men are reserved about expressing their feelings but when it comes to describing how Nelson knew that Mercy was the one for him, he is not short of words: “I followed my heart and I knew without a doubt that she was the one. She is from a Christian family and we concur in almost every point. She is beautiful, smart and good hearted and she is always the first to take responsibility for any mistakes on her part. This is a rare combination in a woman.” Mercy on the other hand had this to say regarding why she didn’t hesitate to say yes.
“During the time of our friendship and dating, I got to know him very well, and he is the only man I felt for the way I did,” she recalls. “I can see his good even in his worst moments. He is always real, he gives me a sense of security being with him and he is the only person I wanted to be with whether I was happy or sad. He changed me for better.” It is one thing to say all these adorable things about one another, but the reality of the words is only proven when two people in love come forth to declare their affection for one another before God and men. This is exactly what Nelson and Mercy did during their red and black themed wedding which was nothing short of glamorous. Red and black are Mercy’s favorite colors, with Nelson’s favorite color blue having been featured prominently during their traditional wedding. As the bride explains to X Access, her wedding gown was in all sorts exotic. “My gown was a present from a friend who lives in the USA. The shoes were from the designer Soloh, while the groom’s men’s’ outfits were designed by Calvin of Emma designs. The delectable flower girls and page boys were dressed by Jane, my sister.” On their special day, Nelson also had to look the part of Prince Charming, and this he achieved through a black suit with a white shirt and a red cravat. The exotic splash in this love story only deepens with their honeymoon plan; two days in Kilimanjaro, with Zanzibar being their ultimate destination. X Access wishes Nelson and Mercy a love and laughter filled ever-after.

Africa Nouveau concert delights ahead of global day of action S
et as a build up to the 2015 global day of action slated for the eve of September 24th, the two day Africa Nouveau festival held at the Ngong’ race course in Nairobi this past weekend show cased a brilliant stage for fun, art, fashion, music, entrepreneurship and a passionate people with a clear agenda to end poverty, inequality, climate change and subsequently save the children. Set up by seasoned event’s organizers Blankets and wine in conjunction with Africa artist peace Initiative. The festival brought together artists from across Africa whose aim is to give rise to influential voices that will amplify demands to governments as the UN summit adopts the Sustainable development Goals (SDG’s) later on this month. Taking on a picnic setting, the festival kicked off Saturday at midday with fashion enthusiasts, music lovers and fun loving people trickling in for an afternoon of fun. With the DJs on the decks, great food to sample and an array of stalls displaying and selling fashion garments and accessories, the afternoon faded away quite fast. Performances by the red acapella group kicked off the evening performances with the all boy band telling their tales in blended harmony. Muthoni the Drummer queen as usual did not disappoint, giving revelers a performance to remember as she got down to give the audience the best of her vocals, rap skills and flaunted her drumming skills that make her the drummer queen. Ghanaian singer and songwriter Jojo Abot’s Afrobeat jazz fused in soul stood out as the darling of many. Her rendition stealing the hearts of the crowds as she went on to give her best to the eager audience that took this lead to dance along to her tunes. A late night performance from the South African group Fantasma whose music revolves around hip hop
and traditional Zulu music paved way for DJ Cortega and his team who did a great job to keep revelers on their feet all night long playing some of Africa’s greatest hits laced with some hits from out of the continent. The festivals’ second day saw performances from Kenya’s Fena, Dj Satelite and an electrifying performance from Central African Republic’s Boddhi Satva. As the countdown to the global day of action continues, the desire for a better world where poverty and inequality is a non-issue continues to be sought through music, fashion and art. The Africa nouvea festival in its inauguration, was well attended and the show incredible and with the festival’s focus on new African sounds and creative innovation of existing African sounds, the nouveau festival is set to get even better in the subsequent concerts.

Beyoncé excited a huge crowd in Philadelphia when she performed her first real concert of 2015 during the Made in America Festival. Queen Bey lived up to her title on Saturday, putting a new spin on her major hits. She kicked off her set with the darker 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack-version of «Crazy in Love» -- which included a slinky, sexy entrance to the stage -- before delighting fans with the original rendition. While fans didn’t hear any new music or get a collaboration from Jay Z, which many expected as her husband was the one who put on the festival, they did get to hear some old Destiny’s Child favorites like “Survivor” and “Say My Name.” Beyoncé

The move is expected to revolutionize agriculture in some areas through gap filling in administration and operation of smallholder cooperatives in a bid to improve their credit worthiness and convince smallholder creditors to embrace them. After accessing the cooperative’s strength and weaknesses, SCOPEinsight’s provided them with a detailed report highlighting areas of improvement and recommended

WEATHERFORECAST
DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 Your adaptive powers are useful in that they give you a high tolerance for uncomfortable situations, Capricorn. At times, however, this trait may not serve you very effectively. You may end up staying in a difficult relationship or unsatisfying job because you fear something new. Life is short. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Your interactions may seem like giving a speech instead of having a discussion. Perhaps you feel like you’re talking to yourself most of the time and no one is really listening. There’s nothing wrong with you or the person you’re talking to. It’s just a phase. Don’t get hung up on it.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 This is liable to have a dramatic effect on everyone else. Be aware of the fact that your mood may not be an accurate reflection of reality, even though for the most part your world is centered on your moods and the dramatic swings they go through within one day. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Relationships may be a bit difficult, Gemini, so don’t force pleasantry if it doesn’t come naturally. Your motto today should be, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Perhaps this leaves you tongue-tied, but that’s fine. If you need to spend the day alone, so be it. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 You may put other people’s needs before yours, Cancer. There’s an important balance between being selfish and being selfless. Don’t sacrifice yourself to be a servant to others. It’s important that you not think only of yourself without considering how your actions will affect others. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Be disciplined. Maintain your boundaries in order to keep from getting swept into other people’s soap operas, Leo. It may be fun to escape your problems by jumping into someone else’s life, but soon you’ll find the extra weight is not only taxing but also won’t solve your problems. VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 Don’t go overboard, Virgo. You may get so carried away in the early part of the day that by evening you notice you’ve gone beyond your own boundaries. Regret may sink in, and you may feel guilty about things you said or did. Prevent this by thinking things through before speaking or acting. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 People may be trying to subtly communicate to you, but you may not be aware of this because you’re so caught up in your own difficulties, Libra. You’re so preoccupied with running smoothly that you’re unaware of other cars on the road. Stop, release the brake, and drive. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 You may feel like you aren’t getting the attention you need or deserve, Scorpio. Because of this, you may resent the people you feel you should be getting it from. This attitude is likely to make people less likely to come to your rescue. Who wants to be around someone so needy and unhappy? SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 Try not to push away the very people who are there to help you, Sagittarius. Dumping your problems on others may be the thing that does just that. Recognize your uncomfortable feelings, but don’t burden others with them. Your happiness is your responsibility.
MUSTREAD Arrow Of God — by Chinua Achebe
This was Chinua Achebe’s third novel after No Longer At Ease and Things Fall Apart. Set in the Ibo heartland of eastern Nigeria, one of Africa’s bestknown writers describes the conflict between old and new in its most poignant aspect: the personal struggle between father and son. This book is notable for its description of the struggle between the chief priest of Ulu and the British colonial administration. Arrow of God is a classical tragedy: Ezeulu is unlucky in facing challenges outside his experience, but his fall is also the result of his pride and his refusal to take advice from friends and family.

YOURSAY So many public policies without practice
Have public policies become a paradox characterized by enormous rhetoric from institutions and organizations involved in biodiversity information generation and implementation with very little efforts to substantiate their impacts? This appears
to be the case for policies in sub-Sahara Africa. Different institutions have explicitly declared their commitments in creating conservation policies; legislation, institutions and international agreements on biodiversity, which is, quite a remarkable
step. However, the impacts of these policies are yet to be felt, putting into consideration the fact that we are living in the wake of catastrophic climate change phenomena. —African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS)
KNH deplorable, state not serious on health News of stranded cancer patients at Kenya’s largest referral hospital is shocking even though it is not the first time such an occurrence happened. With the health functions almost fully devolved, the government
ought to give serious attention to facilities at Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the only two medical facilities it is managing. And with the many billions the ministry of health is allocated
every year, it is shocking to see the government saying it has not been able to buy an equipment worth Sh200 million. — Leonard Juma, Kawangware

Helb faulty systems discourage loan repayment Any attempt to pay back money owed to an organisation should always be a welcome move. But not for the Higher Education Loans Board. For the last three days, I have visited Helb offices, filled forms and waited to get feedback on the repayment schedule. But after waiting for an average of one hour every day, the information comes that the systems
are down and we should be prepared to wait indefinitely as things get fixed. Frustrated, I walk away. For an institution that has often complained of being underfunded, Helb should be very keen not to discourage people from repaying their loans. —Freddie Mcobuya, Nairobi
We are paying way too much for way too less For a long time now, we have paid Multichoice Kenya a lot of money in return for very little value. The subscription fee we pay in Kenya is much higher as compared to what other African states pay for the same bouquets. In addition to this, we are not getting value for money as most movies, series and documentaries are repeated. We must unite once and for all and reclaim control of what we
want to watch and at what cost. We are a nation of English Premier League lovers and may not be able to survive too long without DSTV but monopoly should not make us slaves. Even if it means a one month boycott, let us do it, Multichoice will definitely feel the pinch and review the rates. — Suffocate Mkenya, Nairobi

SPORTS BRIEFS Mwamba win first Kabeberi title in 6 years Mwamba RFC won their first Kabeberi Sevens title in six years after they beat Impala 26-22 in the final played Sunday at the RFUEA grounds. Collins Injera, tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) and his brother Humphrey Khayange both scored a try each to help Mwamba win the historic title. Impala took opened a 12-0 lead after Ian Minjire touched down with Simiyu converting before scoring a second try. Kayange then gave Mwamba their first try with Injera kicking well over the resultant conversion. Mwamba then took a 14-12 lead following Injera’s conversion after his brother Agevi crossed the chalk for a second try. Impala then went ahead 17-14 following a George Okowa try but Injera made it 19-17 with his first try before Impala took the lead once again courtesy of Paul Mutsami. Injera was called to action again when Shaaban Ahmed touched down and the resultant conversion was all Mwamba needed to win their first title in six years.
KNRC down to the wire
….as final Guru nanak leg draws closer This year’s Kenya National Rally Championship is turning out to be one of the most dramatic events in recent times with fast and furious drivers’ antics serving up great moments ahead of the season-closing Guru Nanak Rally next month. Last Saturday’s seventh and penultimate KNRC in Nakuru saw some of the titles sealed and the rest going down to the wire with Jansher Sandhu, son of retired driver Kulwinder “Sweetie” Sandhu being crowned the new KNRC Division 3 champion on his first full season
of competition and in an ex-Ian Duncan Mitsubishi Evolution 9. Defending 2WD Champion Leonardo Varese need to finish in top four to reclaim the 2WD and hopes that Erc Bengi doesn’t claim the first position. Bengi’s who retired on the transport road towards the seventh section will be crowned champions if he wins the Guru Nanak but if he retires, Verese will just need to finish fourth as third placed Sammy Nyorri who also retired on the Nakuru tour, can equal Leo’s 125.5points tally if he wins and dent his title
ambition. Alex Lairang’I won the 2WD Class to remain in fourth with a 100points but he’s out of title contention. The 2013 2WD Champion Dennis Mwenda also sealed the KNRC Division 2 championship on his very first year in the division in the Silverspread Team Meru EVO9 previously driven by Issa Amwari. Jansher who started racing last year as a navigator in the classic category made his debut as a driver in the season opening Kisumu.
“I pushed sensibly harder. It’s been a long and rough ride and I’m glad I’m here and very happy with my first championship,” said Jansher. Carl Tundo clocked 1:43.34 hours to win the home event while Quentin Mitchell came second after timing 1:45.26hours followed by Ian Duncan on the podium tussle in 1:46.02hours. A five minute penalty on infringement of a tyre rule after changing a tyre dipped Jassi Chatthe to eighth position but that was still enough to secure him his maiden title.
Iceland seal first ever major tourney in Euro qualifiers Iceland sealed their place at a major tournament for the first time as they secured the point they needed in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Kazakhstan. Iceland and Czech Republic both progress from Group A, with Netherlands now unable to progress automatically. Cardiff ’s Aron Gunnarsson, the Iceland captain, who was dismissed late on, said: “It’s unbelievable, I’m shocked.” The island nation is the smallest to qualify for a Euros, with an estimated population of just 317,000. Before the match, manager Lars Lagerback said qualifying would mean more than reaching eight successive finals with his native Sweden, who he managed for nine years. Iceland have moved up 100 places in the Fifa rankings since Lagerback took charge in 2011 and now sit in 23rd position, above the likes of France, Ukraine and Russia.
Australia’s Nile ruled out of Tuesday’s ODI with England Pace bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile has become the latest Australia player to be ruled out of the rest of the one-day international series against England. Opener David Warner broke a thumb during Saturday’s second ODI and was replaced by Yorkshire’s Aaron Finch. Injuries to all-rounder Shane Watson (calf) and Coulter-Nile (hamstring) in that game have forced the tourists to raid county cricket again. John Hastings and Peter Handscomb join the squad for Tuesday’s third ODI. Seamer Hastings, 29, has been Durham’s overseas player this summer. He has played 11 ODIs for Australia, with his last international appearance being his only Test in December 2012. Paceman Ryan Harris retired before the start of the Ashes Test series, keeper Brad Haddin missed a Test for family reasons and left the tour early, while Captain Michael Clarke and opener Chris Rogers retired after the final Test. Australia lead the five-match series 2-0, with the third ODI at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Kenya drops to second in aaG volleyball after cameroon loss The Kenya national volleyball ‘team B’ taking part in the All Africa Games was pushed down to second spot in Pool B after narrowly losing 3-2 (25-27, 21-25, 25-25, 25-29, 15-9) to Cameroon in an epic encounter at Henry Elende Hall in Brazzaville, Congo on Sunday evening. Cameroon rebounded back from two sets behind to take the 3-2 victory. Inexperience costed a youthful Kenyan side which gave away a twosets advantage, allowing Cameroon come back into the game. Kenya dropped two crucial points which saw them relegated to a point below leaders Cameroon. Cameroon, 2011 silver medallist won the decisive fifth set 15-9 having lost the first two sets 25-27 and 21-25 only to pull a hard fought win in the third and fourth sets 25-27 and 25-29 in a
match that lasted 115 minutes. Kenya who beat Algeria in their opening match by straight sets is now placed second with four points. Algeria took their point tally to three following a 3-1 win over Nigeria. Cape Verde fought in another five setter to overcome resurgent Mozambique 3-2 (27-25, 16-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-6) and are now ranked 5th with 2 points ahead of Mozambique who have 1 point. Cameroon improved their win-loss ratio to 2-0 with 5 points, while Kenya dropped to 1-1. Cameroon’s attacker Nana Tchoudjang led her team and match scorers with 19 points followed by Laeticia Moma 18. Kenya Prisons pair of Esther Mwombe contributed 13 points for Kenya followed by Edith Mukuvlani 10.

SPORT 15 MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2015 Serena Williams, right, with her sister, Venus in Wimbledon.
It’s sisterly face off in U.S Open quarters Serena Williams’ historic pursuit of the calendar grand slam was transformed into an emotionally supercharged family affair the world No1 could certainly have done without on Sunday. With almost perfect symmetry, the most garlanded tennis sisters in history won back-to-back matches here to set up a quarter-final encounter between themselves on Tuesday. It will be the first time they have met at this stage in New York since 2008 – their 14th meeting in majors overall – and will, without doubt, be one of their most poignant battles as the younger Williams sister attempts to complete her clean sweep of 2015. No sooner had the dust settled on Venus’ 6-2, 6-1 triumph over the Estonian qualifier Anett Kontaveit than Serena
strode out on to the Arthur Ashe court and promptly extinguished the youthful exuberance of Madison Keys 6-3, 6-3. “It was important to get a great start. That was my only chance,” said Serena, who looked visibly uncomfortable when contemplating the encounter with her older sister. “I became more relaxed and everything worked well. I don’t feel any pressure. Venus is playing great, I barely had a chance to get ready because she was playing so fast. At least one Williams will be in the semis.” Keys, who hits her groundstrokes harder than anyone on the WTA tour, had hoped to overpower the world no1 who had shown glimpses of fallibility in the last two matches, twice dropping the first set before predictably responding
with her intoxicating blend of force and aggression allied with supreme shot selection. The 20 year-old, coached by former US Open champion Lindsay Davenport, certainly struck the ball with fierce intensity from the onset .Though when the lively world number 19’s serve finally failed allowing Williams to break for 5-3, the writing appeared to be on the wall. Seven unforced errors and a second-serve points percentage of only 36% were the numbers which undid Keys here in the first set. A double fault sealed the match after 68 minutes in what was Williams’ most complete performance so far. The 33-year-old’s six unforced errors, compared with the 19 which came from the other end of the court, illustrated the levels of concentration on display.
lewis Hamilton keeps Italia GP after stewards’ investigation Lewis Hamilton cruised to a dominant Italian Grand Prix victory to put a stranglehold on the world title - and was cleared of breaking tyre rules. Hamilton’s seventh victory this season puts him 53 points ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg as the German retired. Mercedes were investigated on the grounds the tyres were below the minimum permitted pressure but the stewards allowed Hamilton to keep his victory after ruling Mercedes had followed safe operating procedures. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was second as Rosberg suffered an engine failure with three laps to go. Hamilton survived a scare in the final laps when his team told him he had to drive flat out but not what the
problem was. It seems Mercedes were trying to get Hamilton to build a lead of more than 25 seconds in case of a penalty for the tyre pressure, which was 0.3psi lower than the minimum amount specified by Pirelli on safety grounds but crossed the line exactly 25.0 seconds ahead of Vettel. Rosberg’s left-rear tyre was also found to be below the required pressure - by 1.1psi in his case. Williams’s Felipe Massa fended off a late attack from team-mate Valtteri Bottas to take the final podium place. Hamilton’s win, his most crushing of a season he has dominated from the first race in Australia back in March, came despite reliability concerns over an upgraded engine fitted to his car.

Harambee Stars coach Bobby Willimason on the sidelines during a previous match.
Williamson recalled clubless Oliech back to the team for the first time after he was axed from the national team by Amrouche for his dipping form and gross indiscipline - his characteristic style of reporting and sneaking out of team camp.
Fans vilify Williamson for Stars’ loss to Zambia
B
obby Williamson’s favourite Noah Wafula is the man Kenyans turned their angers on after Harambee Stars delivered what was somwhow expected of them; a disappointing result. Stars went down 2-1 to visiting Zambia over the yesterday at a packed Nyayo National Stadium. The loss elicited painful memories that the national team has previously inflicted on its patriotic following. While fans made a mock of the team that is yet to take part in continental games since 2004, the result may dent Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, something that might not surprise many local fans who thronged the stadium before they were sent home with Stars’ usual gift – a neatly packed bag of disappointment. And according to most fans, Scot Bobby Williamson, Stars’ head coach is thought to have made big mistakes ahead of the clash. While his selection was questionable from the onset when he released the

names of foreign based players, it was his call to bring on Wafula after Paul Were picked up an injury in the 28th minute that he will regret. The Scot who parted ways with Uganda Cranes for non-performance overlooked John Ndirangu in his selection but his decision to bring on Wafula ahead of Kenyan Premier League top scorer Jesse Were left fans scratching their heads after a lukewarm performance from the Tusker forward. Williamson who is yet to post any win with Stars since taking over from Belgian Adel Amruoche who delivered the CECAFA title before he parted ways with FKF also stuck with Denis Oliech despite his ineffectiveness upfront. Williamson recalled clubless Oliech back to the team for the first time after he was axed from the national team by Amrouche for dipping form in addition to gross indiscipline in his characteristic style of reporting and sneaking out of team camp. But Oliech paid the coach with only
one short on target before he was pulled out for Allan Wanga in the 68th minute. Prior to the match, Williamson had castigated his players for ‘luck of creativity’ especially in the midfield and the squad lived up to their newly acquired second name when they failed to penetrate Zambia’s central defence even after the coach himself relegated Bernard Mang’oli and Johana Omollo to the bench after dropping Humphrey Mieno from the final squad. Gor Mahia striker Michael Olunga had given Kenya the lead in the 13 minute after he was served by Dennis Odhiambo before beating two Zambia defenders with his left foot to tap into an empty net. Zambia Winstone Kalengo levelled the scores for the visitors when he beat Arnold Origi with a thunderbolt shot on the top right corner before Collins Mbesuma added a killer 12 minutes later to take Zambia top of Group E with four points, same as Congo. Kenya are third with a point, same a Guinea Bissau.
