Jubilee warned as more anti-ICC rallies planned
T
he Jubilee coalition will hold a series of meetings this week as it escalates its onslaught on the International Criminal Court (ICC). Two separate meetings, one by the Rift Valley politicians and another by Mount Kenya MPs have been planned for this week with other rallies set to be held in Ruiru, Thika and Kapsabet towns. But observers say the anti-ICC onslaught by Jubilee could work against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Arap Sang’s whose trials are ongoing at the Hague-based court. Although not confirmed URP legislators are expected to meet tomorrow to make final plans on the rallies while their counterparts in TNA will have a similar are meeting before the end of the week. Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki yesterday confirmed that there would be a prayer rally at Ruiru grounds in Thika County on September 19 for the Deputy President and radio journalist Joshua Arap Sang. Principals to decide Cord’s 2017 presidential flagbearer Principals of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) have termed calls to pick a presidential candidate as a ‘nonissue’ at the moment in a clever move to prevent fallout among the coalition’s partners. A two-day retreat in Naivasha concluded that the coalition’s leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula and Raila Odinga should be left to decide amongst themselves who will be the presidential candidate in the next general elections. The parliamentary group meeting came amid calls from the three
major parties in the coaltion for their various leaders to demand to be the presidential flagbearer in 2017. But it was agreed that the matter be left with the principals to decide. Sources at the meeting intimated that Kisumu Senator Anyang Nyong’o told the plenary that the issue of Cord’s next presidential candidate should not be discussed in public rallies but should be handled with care lest it destroys the coalition. “That issue must be handled with care. As members of the coalition we should leave it to the three principals to decide on the modality, method or
formula to be used in picking one of them,” Nyong’o is reported to have said. Siaya Senator James Orengo also downplayed the issue saying it’s a non-issue at the moment and the Coalition will not dwell on it for now. “Read the lips of the principals. We know what the media wants to hear, but we want to tell you that the coalition is intact and steadfast,” Orengo told the media briefing after a closed-door meeting attended by the three co-principals and NarcKenya leader Martha Karua.
Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga said the issue is very sensitive and they resolved that the three should sit down among themselves and resolve the issue. “We don’t want to start haggling about the issue of the flag bearer at the moment, we know how sensitive the issue is and we have tasked the three principals to resolve it among themselves to avoid any fall out,” Anyanga said. Cord Principal Raila Odinga is also reportedly told the Coalition members that the issue of the next flag bearer should not be an issue at
the moment as it would be handled at the right time. Odinga told his troops to concentrate on improving its performance both in the National Assembly and the Senate. “That is not an issue to be deliberated at this forum. We will handle that at the right time. At the moment, as the Opposition we should concentrate on how to hold the Jubilee Government to account and improve our performance as an Opposition both in and out of the National Assembly and Senate,” Raila told the meeting.

Analysts warn Jubilee against anti-ICC rallies From Page 1 “We will have another prayer meeting for our DP and Sang in Ruiru. This is only the beginning and we are inviting our colleagues to attend,” Kindiki said. However, political analyst Barrack Muluka is cautioning that the rallies can work against Deputy President William in his ongoing case. Muluka argued that the International Criminal Court may see Ruto as a great political mobilizer hence might make certain decisions based on that.
“All the current political happenings in the country might be considered by the ICC, hence in my own opinion, these rallies should not be held,” Muluka said. Another political commentator Macharia Gaitho also faulted the political rallies held by leaders saying they undermine the good work being done by Ruto’s legal team. He cited the latest prayer held in Kuresoi as one of the activities that undermines the work of Ruto’s defence
team. Gaitho observed that Ruto’s legal team has put up a sterling performance at the Hague based court to convince the judges to let the DP off the hook. “The biggest threats to the Deputy President right now are the ticks and opportunists who pretend to be rallying political support to his cause but are actually providing fuel and ammunition to his enemies,” Gaitho said in an opinion piece on a local daily today.
Gaitho’s comments echoed those of Kuresoi South MP Zakayo Cheruiyot. Speaking on Monday morning at a Nakuru hotel just a day after the prayers in his constituency, Mr Cheruiyot said the much hyped mother of all prayers’ rally held for deputy President did not yield anything and can work against the DP in his pursuit to get out of the ICC jaws. Cheruiyot said that the MPs should stop their empty talk about the ICC cases and work on how they can get the DP out of the Hague-based
court. “People gathered in Kuresoi to pray for the Deputy President but instead of praying they were busy politicking instead of addressing the real issues. Mere political words and statements will only complicate things for the DP,” Cheruiyot said. “What people should be doing is ask President Kenyatta and his handlers what they did to bring his case to an end and apply the same on Ruto’s case,” he added.

TSC To iSSue diSmiSSal leTTerS To STriking TeaCherS The Teachers Service has hinted that it may make good its threat to issue dismissal letters to teachers who are participating on the ongoing strike. TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia said they are now just waiting for the County Education Directors to forward the numbers of all teachers who did not report on duty yesterday. Macharia said once they receive the data they will serve the teachers with letters of dismissal. The striking teachers have defied a warning from the Teachers Service Commission and took to the streets to press for their increased salaries. In a bid avoid the TSC dragnet of taking roll calls every day, it has emerged that some teachers are only reporting to schools to sign the attendance sheets and then leave their work stations The developments come as education crisis continues to deepen with learning paralysed in most public schools as the ongoing teachers strike entered its second week yesterday. On Sunday the ministry of education instructed all County Directors of Education to monitor school attendance daily of both pupils and teachers and file a report everyday by 4pm. Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’ in a circular told county officers to take a separate roll call for teachers who absent themselves from duty and forward to the ministry for necessary action. “We are currently just waiting for the list as we had communicated earlier, the commission will proceed and issue dismissal letters after receiving the data,” Macharia said.

this helped reduce crime in the county and urged them to extend the same to the new boss. He listed the highlight of his career as being in the centre of the preparations for the much publicised visit by US President Barack Obama
and the inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto. “The manner in which we provided security and the fact we did not have any hitch is definitely my most memorable moment,” he said. Kibue said his lowest moment came during the Westgate Shopping Mall terror attack that claimed 67 lives. He said police could have done more to save lives, but was quick to say he learnt many lessons during the attack. “We lost so many people and although we did what we could, maybe we could have done more. I was at the centre of everything,” he said. More on this story at

UK fossil hunters asked to help comb Turkana desert UK members of the public are being invited to help hunt for fossils in Kenya’s Turkana desert in an online citizen science initiative called ‘Fossilfinder’. Volunteers will sift one million images from the arid Turkana Basin, a key area for fossils of early human ancestors. The photos were taken by archaeologists using a special aerial camera system mounted on kites, drones and other devices. The site launches today at the British Science festival in Bradford. “It’s an opportunity for the public to take part in this immense search for new fossil material at Lake Turkana,” Dr Andrew Wilson from the University of Bradford, one of the project’s leaders, told journalists at the festival. “This is a huge amount of material that couldn’t be searched by any one person, and it couldn’t really be searched effectively by a computerised system on its own.” The particular area the researchers are concentrating on contains many fossils between 1.4 and 1.8 million
years old. This is a period known for the emergence of the first three species in the Homo genus, as well as key developments like the appearance and spread of tool use among our early ancestors. “There are major questions to be answered,” said Dr Randolph Donahue, another team member from Bradford. “What’s the relationship of these different species? Which one turns out to be our ancestor?” The region is also subject to erosion when heavy rains arrive, which reveals fresh fossils every year. Their first tranche of photos covers several square kilometres of ground at a resolution of 3mm per pixel, including large rectangular areas and long strips of land deliberately chosen to crisscross important locations in the basin. As well as building up a large-scale view of the environment and its density of fossils, the information volunteers provide about the pictures will help identify the most promising locations for archaeologists to visit in person. “After they get

through talking about the different stones and different kinds of sediments, they get to more interesting questions about what sort of fossils and artefacts they might be seeing,” said Dr Donahue. These items might range from ancient tools to mollusc shells, mammal bones, or even ancient hominin remains. The
citizen scientists will not be making their decisions alone - each image will be shown to 10 individuals to ensure the results are as robust as possible. Dr Evans and his team will keep volunteers informed through blogposts as the results build up - and there may even be other rewards. “Maybe if somebody finds
a new fragment from the latest 1.4 million-yearold hominin, they will get a chance to be on the committee that names it. They might even get a 3D print, if it is particularly a nice fossil,” he said. The website was built on a software backbone provided by the successful citizen science initiative Zooniverse.
Prof Chris Lintott from the University of Oxford, Zooniverse’s founder, said Fossilfinder marks an exciting departure. “We have new tools for people to be able to build their own projects - and this is the first project to use that new infrastructure,” he told the BBC.
New church rules for divorcees?
EYING REFORMS: Pope Francis waves to faithful at a past function in Paris. He is expected to announce new chruch rules on marriage and divorce.
Pope Francis is expected to announce revisions on Tuesday to the process by which Catholics may annul their marriages in yet another sign of the pontiff pushing his church to be more welcoming and merciful. A brief statement from the Vatican does not detail the proposed reforms, but Francis has said that obtaining annulments can be too cumbersome and costly, dragging on for years and costing hundreds if not thousands of dollars. “Some procedures are so long and so burdensome,” the pontiff said in 2014, “and people give up.” That sentiment is supported by statistics. Just 61percent of African Catholics seeking annulments in 2012 completed the process, according to a study conducted by Georgetown University’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. In the more wealthy Western world, where Catholics can afford to hire canon lawyers, 86 per cent received annulments. “This is not because tribunals
in Africa were more likely than those in the Americas to rule contrary to nullity,” CARA said in its analysis. “It is more a reflection of more people seeking annulments in Africa than in the Americas not completing the annulment process.” In the United States, 28 per cent of Catholic marriages end in divorce, according to the General Social Survey. That’s lower than the general population, but still equivalent to 11 million adults. The church granted about 40,000 annulments in 2012, according to CARA. The Catholic Church does not recognise civil divorces. Instead, its theology holds that marital unions sanctified by God are indissoluble. Annulments, available only through church tribunals, state that the marriage contract was fundamentally flawed from the start, and hence invalid in the eyes of the church. In the 1980s, the church added another step to the process, requiring a second review before an annulment can be granted. Without an
annulment, a divorced Catholic who remarries is considered an adulterer and may not participate in some sacraments, including Holy Communion. Led by Pope Francis, the church is holding high-level meetings, called synods, to debate that teaching. The next synod is to be held in October. Tuesday’s announcement is expected to be yet another step in Pope Francis’ efforts to reform the church. On Thursday, he announced that during an upcoming “Year of Mercy,” Catholic priests around the world will be able to forgive the “sin” of abortion. Under canon law, absolution of certain serious sins, including abortion, is usually reserved only to bishops. With the abortion and annulment announcements, Francis seems to be signaling a “third way” to govern the church through thorny issues. He’s not rewriting the catechism, but he’s encouraging Catholic clergy to be more merciful and at times more flexible in how they enforce church rules.

The distinction matters, for under the 1951 Refugee Convention and a string of EU laws, European countries must offer refuge or other types of protection to asylum-seekers who can demonstrate that they are fleeing war or persecution. They are under no such obligation to those looking to improve their prospects, even if they have left behind lives of destitution. So if Messrs Orbán and Fico are right, Europe’s migration crisis amounts largely to a problem of border management and repatriation; not relocation, integration and the rest of it. Are they? Let’s look at the numbers. UK property firm, St Paul’s bids to list on NSE St Paul’s Property Trust Plc has announced plans to list on the Growth Enterprise Market Segment (GEMS) of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to make it the first listing in East Africa by UK property investment. Expected to take place in the fourth quarter of 2015 to give Kenyan investors exposure to the UK property market, the firm aims at allocating fund as well as distributing tax efficient income to Kenyan and international investors.
The investors will in turn receive returns through dividend distribution of rental income, special dividends and value added opportunities. “We intend to maximise returns for shareholders through our welldeveloped networks and decades of experience of managing very large UK government tenanted property portfolios in the UK. Our policy for the UK market – and possibly Europe in time – is risk averse, focused
and strategic,” KensWick Capital Management Chairman Britten-Long said. However St. Paul’s will be chaired by Patrick Walker the former Kenyan partner who became the Director of Tyson’s Limited in Kenya and was responsible for Knight Frank’s East African entry served as a Regional Director for a decade. “The group will maintain high standards of corporate governance with the appointment of external non-executive directors, who have track records of achievement and excellence with public companies,” Walker added. Burbidge Capital has been appointed as nominated advisor for the listing, Coulson Harney as legal advisor, Deloitte Kenya as reporting accountant and Levanter Africa to lead communications advisors. “We look forward greatly to welcoming St Paul’s to the Exchange, once it has satisfied the listing criteria. We believe a NSE listing on the GEMS market, will be a perfect platform for this innovative investment product,” says NSE Chief Executive Geoffrey Odundo.

NIC partner with ATI to spur SMEs growth Financial services provider NIC Bank has today renewed its partnership with African Trade Insurance agency ATI in a bid to widen product offering to provide solutions to the growing SMEs who trade within the region. Following a partnership that was signed last year, today marked the renewal of the credit insurance cover. Aimed at spurring economic growth, this partnership will ensure one of the biggest challenges experienced by SMEs across Africa: access to credit without tangible collateral is a thing of the past and that SMEs seeking financing are not subjected to bureaucracies. “Our continuous partnership with ATI protects us against risks that
have traditionally inhibited most African banks from lending to SMEs”, noted Robert Kibaara. This partnership will help NIC bank extend credit facilities such as short term loans, invoice discounting, bank guarantees and letters of credit without the requirement of the standard tangible securities as is the current practice by banks. “As NIC bank continues to deepen its penetration in the retail and SME segment, giving value added services such as these is a clear way to provide exceptional customer care and differentiate ourselves in the market.” said NIC bank retail Director Robert Kibaara during the unveiling of the partnership.

BLaME iT on
social media i
t’s because of social media that the # tag has been trending over the past 48 hours with revelations of the good, bad and ugly of social media. Since the landing of social media sites into the country about eight years ago, the use of social media has rapidly grown bringing with it a myriad of positive and negative effects. A number of people have become famous through social media while others have gotten employed because of the numbers they command in that s space. While social media has actively become a life changer, concerns have also been raised as to whether the changes brought about by social media have a positive or negative effect on our lives as compared to the analogue era. Famous characters… Over the years, social media sites such as Facebook, twitter and Instagram have virtually created a physically anti-social generation, whose voices are only heard through what they type on social media. For a long time, many Kenyans had no idea who Robert Alai was, he was the quietest character in person but the loudest tweeter. With time, his following grew, making him
one of the most sought after social media bigwigs and activists. It is this platform that has equally created jobs for youths in the government’s Digital communication department led by Dennis Itumbi. Other social media bigwigs such as @ThisisEss and @ XtianDela have landed endorsements tweets deals from corporates because of the number of people who follow them and retweet what they say making their tweets viral. With all the fame that come with social media, socialites such as Huddah Monroe, Vera Sidika and activists such as Boniface Mwangi and many others have had to bear the good, bad and ugly that come with it.
Trolling… The more famous you are on social media, the more likely you are to be trolled as everyone watches every move that you make thus one simple mistake on a tweet or status update and you will be trending. Many a times, socialites have been trolled for posting photos that were
allegedly photo shopped, for having blonde moments when they carelessly tweet wrong information or when official government representatives such as Dennis Itumbi misinform the public. Even though it is characteristic of people to be judgmental, we are all aware that nobody is perfect and that mistakes can be made by anyone on social media. However, when the bad catches up with these famous characters, it seriously takes a toll on them in a nearly life threatening way! The good, the bad and the ugly Its because of social media that millions of Kenyans are able to rally behind a cause and even raise funds united as a nation. It is also because of social media that this country has attained full freedom of expression. It is on social media where citizens keep the government on its toes demanding proper governance and pushing forward development agendas as well as giving directions where it is deemed the government
has failed. Social media has with time also replaced the main stream media with almost all breaking news originating from social media sites as well as from individual users of social sites. With all the merits social sites scoop, the use of social sites has had many negative impacts on our society. It is because of social media sites that some people have lost their jobs for tweeting or updating a status that their employer deemed offensive and injurious to the institution. The same social sites have rendered many addicts and are no longer productive at work, this trend has led to institutions losing millions while millions worldwide lost their jobs. The use of social media has extensively also graduated into a hotbed of tribalistic dialogues that diminish the integration and cohesion of the people of this country. Even as such, the end justifies the means as the war of words on twitter and at times facebook lead to the realization of many a peoples self-worth and gives a sense of direction. As this continues to trend, it is evident that social sites have in good time made life more interesting and worth living.

About the Dorobo…
T
he Dorobo are not one big tribe, far from that actually, this term referred to the original hunters who lived in the forest. Most of the Dorobo people have been absorbed into the language and culture of the Nilotes and in some cases Bantu tribes. Although they have been absorbed there are some who still keep the name so as to distinguish themselves from the other Nilotes and to keep that which is left of their name. The Okiek are bilingual. They speak both Kipsigis and Maasai with one being the mother tongue and the other being their second language. The Mukogodo Maasai consider themselves a sub-tribe of the Maasai and speak the Maasai language (Maa). Many also speak Swahili. The Mediak and Mosiro of Tanzania speak languages related to the Nandi language in Kenya, probably from the original form of the early Kalenjin settlers. Many of the Mosiro now speak Maasai. It is reported that 8 El Molo (Ol Molo) still speak the old language, while a few dozen more speak Samburu or Turkana. In Tanzania, the “Dorobo” groups Aramanick and Kisankasa still speak Cushite languages, but many are bilingual in Maasai or Swahili. The Chamus (Njemps) are another of these old peoples. The Chamus speak Samburu, as do the Ariaal Rendille, who are Eastern Cushites now speaking the Nilotic Samburu language. (The “Rendille” Rendille still speak Rendille, a language related to Somali.) The Ariaal are not called Dorobo, but share a similar cultural history. Related peoples in Tanzania still speak Southern Cushite languages, like Mbugu and Iraqw.

umbi Nyabera has always liked using her hands to create things. It started at a very tender age, because she enjoyed her art and craft classes to the point of practicing everything she had learnt during her spare time. “My spare time was and is still mostly filled with craft activities. From paper crafts, crocheting to fabric crafts. However, it is in March 2015 that I felt compelled to leave formal employment and pursue art .Because I had a wide palette to choose from, I chose millinery, “she tells X Access. Millinery is not the usual painting and drawing on canvas but rather the art of designing, manufacturing and selling hats. It takes Mumbi a week or at times two to complete a piece and this is mainly because of the detail that goes in to carefully crafting a piece. For her inspiration doesn’t come from one source “Inspiration is everywhere from the need to create to our surrounding to the fellow artist I interact with or admire to the textures of materials.it is endless. It would be constricting to just have one source. That is why I have to classify my pieces into collections according to times, seasons and moods.” She says. No art comes on a

silver platter. Some of the challenges that she faced include learning the art because she wanted to do something different. Acquiring materials and mastering the technique used in millinery were the other challenges that she faced. But none of these challenges have bogged her down, if anything, she has taken each head on to become better. “I have had to conceive in 2D ideas and change them to 3D forms that would answer to practicality and aesthetic requirements. The selling bit I am still learning. Each day is a lesson,” Mumbi tells us adding that the massive support she has received from friends and family keeps her going and grounded “I must say am really enjoying the growth of art in Kenya and Africa as a whole, as we are at the verge of a renaissance. With all the mass produced items around there is a major gap in unique handcrafted items. Art is a good measure of the current happenings in a culture. All you need is to look around see the dances, listen to our music, check out our street and you can tell we are having an Afro contemporary cultural bonanza.”

The
stages of
love... r
omance phase
This is the best stage where cupid is in full action complimented by chemicals, endorphins and oxytocin. The romantic love stage is characterized by selective idealization: You only see your love interest’s potential to be the ‘one’, turning a blind eye to their imperfections. The bliss that accompanies this stage is nothing short of infatuated joy and excitement as well as a dire need to spend all your time in the presence of your love interest. The more obsessive individuals portray compulsive disorder signs in this stage which psychologists define as where one is “addicted to the feeling of being in love.” This is actually why you tend to ignore your love interest’s misgives because you would give anything for the feeling to last a lifetime. In figurative terms, this
romantic love stage is exactly how soap operas depict love; thrilling and too good to be true. Sadly, the romantic love stage fades eventually into the realistic love phase.
The realistic love phase
Here, reality begins to dawn on a couple, and this is when trouble hits paradise. This is the critical stage of love where couples either make it or break it, after realizing that love is not a bed of roses. In the realistic love phase, a couple starts seeing each other for who they really are, a characteristic that defines this stage as the opinion making phase. When flaws become apparent, the couple gets into a power struggle phase where they attempt to mold each other to fit their description of an ideal partner. The couple usually gets stuck for a while in this stage which is marred with break ups and make ups
Help! Money is breaking us up…
Dear Dr X,
My husband and I have been married for four years now, and we have a joint savings account where we have been both saving since we got married. We recently discovered that we have amassed a substantial amount of money in the account, but we are in deep conflict as to how to spend the money. I want to continue saving up for our children’s school expenses in the future, but my husband wants to start a business venture in the city. How can we come to an agreement on what to do in this case before we drive each other crazy?
-Stacy
Dear Stacy,
after their romantic love bubble bursts, and only the most resilient couples make it into the final stage; mature love.
The mature love stage
Just as the name suggests, this stage is characterized by a strong mutual feeling of relationship safety and security, with no trust issues at all. In this stage, both parties in a relationship feel fulfilled and cared for, with a deep intrinsic knowledge of one another. This is the stage where proposals and weddings take place once the couple is convinced that they are a match made in heaven. The excitement and thrill experienced in the romantic love stage comes flowing back in, but with a stronger intensity because the couple now knows that they are bound to be together, for better or worse. Do you now know which stage you are in?
Send your agonising queries to adhyambo@x254.co
Wherever money is involved, disputes such as the one that you are in always arise. In this case, the way forward is to engage a financial advisor in the matter, so that he/she can expound the pros and cons of both continuing with your savings plan or making an investment in a business venture. You also
need to seriously consider your husband’s investment idea, as this can multiply the amount of money you have currently to cover your children’s school expenses as you want and also overflow into covering other expenses. You could both be right, simply talk about it and seek professional help. All the best.

Kenya ranks low on global education equality survey Kenya has failed to provide equal opportunities in education for its population, a World Economic Forum (WEF) report has revealed. The study, which was released this month, has found that Africa holds seven of the ten countries with the lowest education equity, which is a unit used to measure of achievement, fairness, and opportunity in education. Mozambique, Uganda, Burundi, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Kenya are among the lowest ranked African countries are from bottom to top respectively. Out of an education equity score that was
ranked out of 7, Kenya received a score of 4.41, while countries like South Korea received a score of 6. Meanwhile, Bangladesh received what experts are calling a dismal score of 2.72. The study, dubbed the Inclusive Growth and Development Report 2015, found that policy makers were generally ignoring the proven fact that reducing inequality can strengthen a country’s economic growth. “The extent to which economic growth broadens improvements in economic opportunity and living standards is influenced by an interdisciplinary mix of structural and institutional aspects of economic policy,”
reads an excerpt from the report. Despite the ranking, Kenya recently received special attention at the just concluded World Assembly for women (WAW) conference in Japan for doing particularly well in regard to the girl child education and recognition of its women politicians. During the event, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta told panelists that Kenya has, for many years, recognized that equitably in education between girls and boys is a key catalyst towards the realization of its past planning goals, especially vision 2030.
Chase Bank, ATI team up to support SMEs Chase Bank Kenya has partnered with African Trade Insurance Agency (ATI) to extend credit services to 2.3 million Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) across the country. Chase Bank General Manager in charge of SME and Islamic Banking Iman Hussein said according to the International Finance Corporation in Kenya, both Micro and SMEs experience an annual credit gap of over Sh 637 billion. According to her, the partnership will see Chase Bank offer new and existing customers a broader range of trade finance products focussing on invoice discounting to see the company access finance and compete with international companies. “This partnership helps us support our customers by providing a solution that is accessible and that allows them to free up funds for their operational activities,” she said. Through capital release, these products will support companies with credit to help them maintain their business by allowing both individual and enterprises bridge the gap between delivery and payment. The products targets suppliers of goods and services to reputable private and governmental institutions trading either as individual, sole proprietors or limited liability companies. Data revealed that out of 2.3 million SMEs, only 9 per cent have access to loan facilities where the partnership is seeking to attract the underserved segment.
Insurance sector blames slow growth on poverty Poverty remains the biggest hurdle to insurance penetration in Kenya, a report has confirmed. Despite the rise of affordable insurance packages and products that target low-income consumers, the sector is struggling to grow according to a study by research group, Fitch Ratings. However, Fitch Ratings says the industry has managed to attract foreign investors due to the country’s relative market sophistication and access to the greater East African region. The agency believes that the Kenyan insurance market would benefit from more partnerships as insurers seek to improve the scale of their operations since the market already consists of a large number of insurance companies, which make it fragmented and competitive.

Electricity and gas blow up as inflation rate falls The average cost of water, electricity, gas and other fuels has increased by 0.76 per cent, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) announced. In its latest report, the Bureau has confirmed that though the rate of inflation in Kenya has dropped to 5.84 per cent when compared to 6.62 per cent in July this year, the overall cost of other commodities has risen. “The cost of electricity consumption surged upwards due to increases in both fuel cost

adjustment and foreign exchange charges per KWh of electricity consumed,” reads the review. Other numbers released prior to the report show that the price of one litre of kerosene hit Sh58.94 down from Sh83.97 last year in August. Meanwhile, diesel is currently selling at Sh84.30 this month while it was selling at Sh105.45 during the same month under review last year.
Last week, the Bureau indicated that the cost of wheat flour fell by more than Sh4 owing to favourable weather conditions in recent months, which in turn caused a decrease in prices of several food items. The prices of cost of water, electricity, gas and other fuels, however, was driven up by what the KNBS terms as “net cost increases in respect of cooking fuels and other household utilities.”
Angry farmers to get Sh59 billion aid package from EU European Union (EU) agriculture ministers have announced a €500 million (Sh59.6 billion) aid package to help farmers after thousands of growers protested on the streets of Brussels. The Belgian, French and German farmers were protesting against plummeting prices for their produce, the BBC reports. They blocked streets with tractors near the EU headquarters, where agriculture ministers were meeting. The European Commission said it was well aware of the situation and was prepared to back up the farmers with the appropriate funds. The aid package came ahead of a meeting of agriculture ministers in Brussels this week to discuss milk prices and the impact of the Russian embargo.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 No one is exempt from disappointment, of not succeeding at something. It’s part of reaching a goal, no matter who you are or what you’ve done in the past. Even the most accomplished people have had to face this. You aren’t alone in your feelings. Give it another shot. Things will work out. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Don’t delude yourself, Gemini. While it can be a real temptation to see what you want to see, there’s danger in doing so. A pipe dream can only last so long. It’s never permanent! Rather than playing this kind of trick on yourself, take off the blinders and face what’s before you. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Nothing says you can’t indulge yourself as long as what you’re considering isn’t dangerous or something you’ll regret. To bring some excitement into your life, just think through the means of attaining it. Perhaps all you need is to try a new sport or go out this evening. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 If you don’t have a working list, it’s time you started one. Brainstorm without censorship. Let your thoughts flow and write them down. Then prioritize the list, add the steps needed to reach each goal, and consider the time frame. Map out your life and go where you want. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Don’t turn anyone away even if you’re busy or under the weather. Chances are the person who comes to you needs the advice and support that only you can offer. Listening doesn’t take that much energy, and that may be all that’s required. Leave yourself open to others. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 There’s no shame in slowing down or taking a day off if it’s needed. If you can spend a day in bed, go for it. This can be more restorative than you know. If some things must get done, delegate or work on a laptop in bed. Take heed when your body tells you it’s had enough.

YOURSAY Taxes should be lowered to ten percent Kenyans are sick and tired of paying a mandatory tithe to a government that barely does anything of consequence with the money. Our taxes are too bloody high and someone needs to lower them immediately. A ten per
cent cut is more than enough to cater for governance, security, development and construction. I know that the government is skimming of the top and with corruption running rampant, it is high time we trimmed the fat.
I am calling on the State to lower taxes. You can’t expect us to cough up such a large fraction of our income yet most of what you do is steal, pilfer and pillage our hardearned taxes. —Dennis L., Nairobi
Police officers could use some respect Our police officers are unsung heroes and heroines that deserve our appreciation and gratitude. These street warriors, like returning veterans of another area, all too often are showered with criticism and disrespect. They can do nothing right and the public is quick to point
a fingers. How ironic that the very people so quick to criticise are those that these men and women are sworn to protect. The job that our law enforcement officers carry out on a daily basis is no less important than that of an active serviceman. These officers are our first and
only defense when it comes to protecting us from the crime-ridden society we live in today. Instead of worrying about what type of equipment they are wearing or using to accomplish this task, let’s just be thankful they’re out there protecting us. – Good Officer, Muthaiga
African governments should end poaching
Africa should seek to reconstruct biodiversity conservation activities as a matter of urgency as it stands the most vulnerable to the climate change threats. The rate at which activities such as poaching of wild animals, urbanization, overexploitation of mining fields, the growing population, deforestation, unregulated development and anthropological misuse is taking place is alarming and needs to be addressed without delay to avoid further loses.
National biodiversity strategies need to be thoroughly adhered to by member countries. Indicators such as global warming should not be ignored and ecosystem based adaptations need to be harnessed so as to protect the future generations from negative effects of ecosystem integrity. It is time to move from plan to action, from policy to practice. — African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS)
Leaders should support Uhuru in drugs war The good gesture of President Uhuru Kenyatta to end the drug menace in Kenya’s Coastal region should be supported by the area leaders and residents at large. The President has been in the region now for a week touring various development project but every time he stops to address the public, the strong loud message that has always come out is the drug issue.
Most youths in the area have been rendered economically non-productive with parents having nothing to do as they watch their sons and daughters getting wasted. As has been widely reported in the media, the drug barons in this region are well known and it will only take co-operation to nab them. —George Kantai, Nairobi
MPs should not be passing bills in first place The average Member of Parliament knows nothing about the average Kenyan citizen, so why in hell’s unholy name do we let them pass bills that affect us assuming they have our best interests in mind? I believe
that community leaders and grassroots organisations are the ones who should be drafting policies. At least they know what those of us on the ground floor are going through. MPs, as we all know, tend to be selfish, greedy and
inconsiderate miscreants. They only fight over laws that affect their well-being and hardly ever champion the rights of the common man. — Unhappy Taxpayer, Nairobi

Butali Sugar Warriors playing against Wazalendo in a previous KHU match.
Dozen Porsches entered for November E.A Safari Rally Porsches have dominated the entry list of November’s Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally set to rev off in Mombasa. With dozen Porsche 911s under preparation, Tuthill has recently carried out a rigorous test on rough roads in mid-Wales. Of the twelve 911s prepared by Tuthill Porsche, five of them are entered by Team Tidö/Race4Health, headed by Stig Blomqvist – the man who nearly took victory for them in 2013 and is an ex-World Rally Champion – and Richard Göransson ex-Swedish and European Touring Car Champion who made a major impression during his Safari debut two years ago. The other cars are to be driven by David von Schinkel, Roger Samuelsson and Christer Johansson. Each car is individually linked to a charity organistaion, most of which have a direct link to support projects in Africa. The other seven cars prepared by Tuthill Porsche are entered either by them on behalf of individual competitors or by the competitors themselves. The drivers of these cars are Richard Jackson, Steve Troman, Joakim Roman, Gilberto Sandretto, Gerard Marcy, Alastair Cavenagh and Jayant Shah. In terms of Safari experience, that is an impressive lineup. With two months left before the crews had the opportunity to shake off a few cobwebs during the just ended KNRC Nakuru Rally and remained upbeat ahead of the forthcoming nine day championship. Nish Lakhani tested his Datsun 1600SSS where he shook off the rust during the Rift Valley Motor and Sports Club (RVM&SC) which culminated at Menengai over the weekend.
I will never retire from international football, says Wayne Rooney England captain Wayne Rooney, who aims to become his country’s leading scorer tonight says he will never retire from international football. Rooney could get his 50th England goal in the home Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland, surpassing the record he shares with Sir Bobby Charlton. With qualification assured, the 29-year-old is set to appear at his sixth major tournament - and plans more. “I won’t be one to say I’m not available for selection,” he said. “I’m sure it’ll probably be the manager’s choice more than mine. It’s a huge honour to play for England.” The Manchester United striker equalled the England scoring record with his 49th international goal in the 6-0 win in San Marino on Saturday, which guaranteed their place in France next year. But Rooney sees no reason why he cannot continue playing for the national team beyond the World Cup in Russia in 2018. “I feel I’m capable of going to Russia,” he added. “After that, it may be a realistic time to see how I feel and if I feel it’s not right for England or myself, I’ll have a decision to make. “If I feel I can carry on, I’ll try. But if the manager says he doesn’t feel I’m in his plans for the next tournament, it’s probably better I don’t play in the qualifying games because I won’t be going to the tournament.”
Police rough up MSC to pile pressure on Butali
There were six different scorers for defending champions Butali Sugar Warriors who thumped Parklands Sports Club 7-1 to remain on course to their men’s Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) league title defence. Their close rivals Kenya Police walloped hosts Mombasa Sports Club 8-0. The win took Butali’s points tally to 31 from 12 matches. A treble by Moses Cheplaiti and Brian Saina as well as a goal each from Samuel Wakil and Sammy Munyi were enough to ensure that Police do not
lose sight of runaway leaders. Former Nakuru and HC Superbha midfielder Bernabus Odhiambo opened the score chart for Butali in the third minute with Vincent Odhiambo doubling the champions’ effort in the 28th minute. Maxwell Wakhungu scored a brace with a point (51 and 52) before Brian Musasia (60), Seth Oburu (69) and Emmanuel Simiyu completed the good outing with a 70th minute strike. Police who have played two
matches less still have a chance of dislodging Butali at the top in they win their two matches at hand. Kisumu Youngster also recorded a massive win after beating National Youth Service (NYS) 5-0 while Parkroad came from a goal down to beat Western Jaguars 4-2. Jaguars had beaten MSC 4-1. Jaguars are now ninth on the log with 1 point same as Parkroad who have an inferior goal difference. In the women’s league, Telkom Orange picked maximum points in
Mombasa following their 4-0 win which took them six points clear off closest challenger Sliders. Orange who are seeking their 18th national title have 21 points from seven matches, six more than Sliders who lost two of their seven match while Strathmore University are third with 13 points, same as United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) and Vikings who have inferior goal differences.
Kenyan Taki breaks C’Wealth Youth Game record
Kumari Taki and Lawi Kosgei of Kenya in action during the Boys 1500 Meters Final on day three of the IAAF World Youth Championships, Cali 2015 on July 17, 2015 at the Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Cali, Colombia.
Kumari Taki set a new world record in the ongoing Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa. Taki led a Kenyan 1-2 finish in the boys 1,500m race where he cut the tape in 3:39.80 ahead of compatriot Lawi Kosgei who clocked 3:40.77. The win pushed Kenya to seventh in the tournament’s medal standings. Kenya beat Jamaica to the boys 4x400m relay but they were disqualified on technicalities, stripping them of the gold. Joyline Cherotich disappointed in her race, girls 1,500m, where she finished distant fourth. Kenya is represented by seven athletes in this year’s Youth Commonwealth Games which has attracted over 1,000 youths aged 14-18 from 107 countries competing for medals in nine disciplines including rugby, boxing, swimming and weightlifting.
Murray blown away by Anderson in U.S Open In a fractious, racket-smashing, sweaty old brawl of a tennis match, splintered with enough oaths to light up a late-night card game, Andy Murray soaked up 25 Kevin Anderson aces but could not stop the giant South African reaching his first grand slam quarter-final, after losing in the fourth-round seven times. Andy Murray suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit for five years as he lost a gruelling fourth-round contest against 15th seed Kevin Anderson, same as Jo Konta who crashed out after she was silenced by Petra Kvitova by 7-5, -3 in the women’s singles. South Africa’s Anderson won 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-0) in four hours and 18 minutes to reach his first major quarter-final. He will meet Stan Wawrinka. It is the first time since the 2010 US
Open that Murray has lost before the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. While Konta’s 16-match winning run ended in straight sets in the cavernous Arthur Ashe Stadium, Murray’s hopes disappeared in a fever-pitch atmosphere on Louis Armstrong Stadium. An emotional Murray smashed his racquet - handing it over to a spectator - and argued with the umpire before launching a fight back in the third set, but Anderson dominated the decisive tie-break. It is 38 years since Britain had male and female quarter-finalists at the same Grand Slam, but Murray’s defeat means it is the first time in five years there have been neither. “That’s obviously something that is disappointing to lose,” Murray said after a run of 18 Grand Slams in which he made at least the quarter-finals.
“Obviously that’s many years’ work that’s gone into building that sort of consistency. To lose that is tough.” At 6ft 8in tall and with a chart-topping 69 aces heading into the match, there was no mystery to the South African’s greatest strength - his serve. In five of their past six encounters, including the Queen’s Club final in June Murray’s returning had proved more than its equal. However, it took until he was a set and 5-1 down for the Scot to break serve this time, and Anderson saw off another break point to clinch the set at the second opportunity. The South African then left the court for six minutes, prompting an angry outburst from Murray towards umpire Jake Garner as he asked “what’s reasonable?” for such an interruption.
Andy Murray came up against a formidable opponent in Kevin Anderson on Monday night.
Kayange dropped as KRU names new squad From Back Page Andrew Amonde is among the notable old faces that were retained in the interim squad of 31 players named yesterday. Mwamba RFC duo of Dennis Ombachi and fly-half, Lavin Asego have been named as standby. KRU will also name a new technical bench soon with Felix Ochieng, who took over the head coach role last December from South African Paul True leaving. Kayange dropped as KRU names new squad
M
wamba RFC’s Humphrey Kayange has been dropped from the national sevens rugby team named yesterday by a panel of selectors. Kayange, Michael Wanjala (Strathmore Leos) and Felix Ayange (Kenya Harlequins) were axed from Kenya’s squad expected to begin their preparation for Rio 2016 Africa qualifiers and 2015/16 HSBC Series this Saturday. It is not yet clear why the trio were dropped, but earlier ‘go slow’ by some senior players who raised issues with their contract and late payment a few weeks back could have played a part as Kenya Rugby Union( KRU) try to put its house in order after a disastrous season which also saw the team being disbanded.
Humphrey Kayange #6 of Kenya runs through defenders of Argentina during the Plate Final on day three of the USA Sevens Rugby at Sam Boyd Stadium on February 12, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
