Uhuru graft war gets Kenyans’ approval President Uhuru Kenyatta has been given thumbs-up in the fight against corruption with 70 per cent of Kenyans approving his performance against the vice. According to a report released by Ipsos today, majority of Kenyans believe President Kenyatta has done his part in the war against corruption and other agencies should come in to assist. The survey conducted between July 30 and August 5 with 2,002 respondents interviewed shows Kenyatta’s approval shot up in April after he tabled in Parliament the famous “list of shame” containing 175 government officers. Before the tabling of the list, the survey indicated that only 53 per cent of Kenyans had confidence in President Kenyatta’s commitment in the fight against corruption. Majority of those polled said the step taken by the Head of State was bold and if supported would curb corruption in the country. “The President move resonated well
with majority of Kenyans hence the high approval rates” said Ipsos lead researcher Tom Wolf while releasing the results. The respondents said after tabling the names of government officers implicated in graft, the President proved that he was ready to tackle graft. “Majority of those we interviewed agreed that other agencies such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) should now do their part to end the vice as the President cannot be everywhere all the time,” he said. In terms of political affiliation, 70 per cent of Jubilee supporters have confidence in President’s Kenyatta’s effort to fight corruption while 52 per cent of Cord supporters believe the President is not serious in the fight against corruption. The survey indicates that Kenyans are still anxious and hopeful that something will be done to those mentioned in the “list of shame”
released by the President. Politically those polled said should nothing happen to those mentioned in the report, President Kenyatta image would be dented in the next General Election. Despite Kenyatta’s shining star in the fight against graft, his deputy William Ruto was named as the most notable figure synonymous with corruption in the government. The poll indicated that people know Ruto as corrupt because of many corrupt deals he is alleged to have been involved in with the respondents citing the allegations that he grabbed the Lang’ata Road Primary school playing ground. Ruto stand at 36 per cent as the government official who is most corrupt. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero at 28 per cent is another corrupt public official while suspended Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau comes was rated at seven per cent.
SURVEY: Ipsos lead researcher Tom Wolf who released the findings today. A majority of Kenyans believe President Kenyatta has done a good job in fighting corruption according to the survey.
37 percent want Raila to retire from politics At least 37 percent of Kenyans want Cord leader Raila Odinga to retire from active politics while 31 percent want him to remain in politics. This is according to the latest survey by Ipsos released today. However, Ipsos lead researcher Tom Wolf says there were bno reasons given as to why they want Mr Odinga to retire or remain in politics.
He however said the former Prime Ministers still enjoys massive support especially in Western and Nyanza regions. The survey was conducted before Cord Naivasha retreat meeting last weekend indicate that 37 percent of the respondents want Odinga not to vie for Presidency and neither should he support someone else in the next elections but he should
refrain from commenting on political issues. Others polled at 27 percent said that the former Prime minister should not be in the presidential race but should support someone else in the next elections. The survey also indicated that 59 percent of cord supporter think the Jubilee government is moving the country in the wrong direction while 66
Murkomen defends anti-ICC rallies Elgeyo-Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen has defended the rallies across the country by Jubilee allied legislators saying they are meant to unite the country. Speaking on Citizen TV’s Cheche programme today morning, Murkomen said the rallies which are also praying for the termination of the cases facing Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang at the International Criminal Court will continue despite warnings from legal and political experts that the planned prayers may spell doom to the ongoing cases. Murkomen insists that the rallies are only meant to preach unity as the cases get into a critical stage. “These prayer rallies are actually meant to preach unity and not to spell doom to the ongoing cases of the Deputy President and radio journalist Joshua Arap Sang,” Murkomen said. He said that the country needs to be more united now than ever before as the country moves towards the 2017 elections. The Senator’s sentiments come as two separate rallies, one by Rift Valley
politicians and another by Mount Kenya Mps have been planned for this week with other rallies set to be held in Ruiru, Thika and Kapsabet towns. “If holding a rally to preach unity is will affect the ongoing cases at ICC, hence we will continue to unite our people, the ongoing cases at ICC is the only thing at the moment that can unite Kenyans” Murkomen said. “We also want to push the government to pile pressure on the International Court to stick to judicial process instead of shifting the goal posts all the time,” Murkomen added. The Senator made the remarks today morning during Cheche show on Citizen TV, where he insisted that the whole Kalenjin community has been profiled by the International court as warlords a perception which must be changed now. He said that as a legal expert it was against international law practice to use recanted evidence against the Deputy President. “I did my internship at ICC and I’m familiar with the International Law practice, what ICC is doing has never been practiced anywhere in the word,” Murkomen said.
percent of Jubilee supporters say the government is on the right path as far as governance is concerned. Those polled cited corruption, insecurity, tribalism and the high cost of living as indicators that the government is not doing well. While those who said the government is doing well pointed out at improved Infrastructure, devolution
and increased employment rate as indicators that the country is moving in the right direction. On the laptop project, 39 percent of jubilee supporters said the project will fail while 69 percent of cord supporters said the government will not implement the project. On specific Jubilee achievement, eight percent of Jubilee supporters said they
have nothing specific point out as an achievement of the government while 14 percent of cord supporters said the government has achieved nothing so far. Cord supporters cited said the government has performed poorly in making devolution succeed, insecurity has also increased and Kenyans continue to bear the burden of high cost of living.
Unions hold rally in solidarity with teachers Various trade unions today held a public rally at Uhuru Park in Nairobi where they warned the government of more strikes if it does not honour a court order to implement teachers’ pay rise of between 50 and 60 percent. The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) has already issued a seven-day notice to the government warning that it will mobilise its members to a nationwide strike in solidarity with the teachers. The rally agreed that teachers’ pay rise be effected or all workers will down their tools. While addressing the rally, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion said they will use all means to secure the 50-60 pay rise awarded to them by the labor court. “We as teachers know that it is the mandate of TSC to review our salaries, evaluate our jobs, and not SRC. TSC should be for the independence of teachers, not independence of the commissioners,” he said. “We are peaceful, even as we exercise our constitutional right to strike. Only Sh1.3 billion to implement the teachers’ salary court order and we will be taxed more than Sh300m,” he added. And in reaching out to other unions, Sossion termed the strike as not a teachers’ struggle but that for all workers. “This is not a struggle for teachers alone. It is
for all workers,” he said adding: “When you pay workers well, you boost the rural economy.” Cotu boss Francis Atwoli warned the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) against threatening to sack teachers who have boycotted classes. He said going on strike is a fundamental constitutional right of any worker in the country and the commission cannot victimise any teacher by threatening to dismiss them. KNUT Chairman Mudzo Nzili said it is the time for workers to get their rights insisting that the government must pay the teachers their dues. “It is our right as workers to go on strike if we feel our employer is not listening to us. We are hungry as teachers, that is why we are carrying sufurias to the protest,” he said. “We are not fighting the government, we are only fighting ‘hunger’, Teachers are law abiding citizens who respect the constitution,” he added. KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori said the government has the capacity to pay the teachers dismissing claims that the government does not have the money for the teachers’ pay rise. “We want the government to honor the court order. We are tired of waiting for its empty promises,”Misori said. On his part KUPPET Chairman Omboko Milemba said they will carry on with the strike till they are paid.

133,000 Kenyans use ecstasy As many as 133,000 Kenyans use the recreational drug known as “ecstasy”. While this is less than 1 per cent of the population, recent studies show that the stimulant’s popularity has been on the rise. Users of the drug include people between the ages of 15 and 64. A report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has discovered that the use of ecstasy may be more common in western countries, but it also exists within the African continent. South Africa is, perhaps, the country with the most users given that as many as 500,000 people have taken the drug on several occasions. The use of the stimulant, which comes in the form of coloured pills or capsules, is also evident in Zambia, Algeria and Morocco. Ecstasy is officially known as methylene-dioxymethamphetamine

It is also known for giving its users what experts call a “euphoric rush”, which usually takes place within 20 minutes of swallowing the drug. Highs can last up to eight hours or more. A published study dubbed “The Side Effects of Drugs” indicates that those under the influence of ecstasy may feel more alert, energetic and affectionate, while their appetites remain suppressed. Users are also known to become more talkative though later effects of the drug include exhaustion, depression, anxiety, paranoia and irritability. Dehydration has been cited as one of the deadlier side effects of using ecstasy and extreme cases can be fatal.
Return to work or face sack, Kidero tells health workers
NAIROBI GOveRNOR: evans Kidero .
Governor Evans Kidero has warned striking Nairobi health workers to return to work or risk being sacked. Kidero said his administration has sorted out all outstanding salary issues with the nurses and that there is no reason for their strike. He also declared the strike illegal saying the nurses’ union is not recognized. “We only recognise the Kenya Government Workers Union, therefore, the ongoing strike by the nurses belonging to Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) is illegal. We have resolved all outstanding issues of salaries as well as allowances with the nurses. People who do not want to work will be replaced. We recently employed 226 health officers who have already been deployed with another 3,000 nurses in our data
base. Labour is a commodity. Nairobi residents cannot continue to suffer,” said Kidero. He told all health workers who downed their tools on Monday citing discrimination, late pay and poor working conditions to unconditionally return to work without any further delay. The health workers kicked of their industrial action this week having issued the strike notice on August 20. The worst-affected hospitals are Mama Lucy Kibaki and Mbagathi, whose staff have stayed away from their work stations. The nurses led by county KNUN secretary general Eunice Ngare accused the county government of selectively promoting health workers. “Promotion should be fair
and on merit. Some of our members have letters from the National government awaiting promotion, but the county government has remained reluctant,” she said Ngare also cited late salaries paid between dates 10 to 15 monthly unlike the case with other county staff. She said many health centres lack basic equipment and facilities, making their work extremely difficult. The governor’s warning comes after county officials and nurses’ representatives meeting called to break the stalemate ended in futility. Most counties have been hit by a wave of health workers strikes in the recent past, leading to push from some quarters that the already devolved health function be reverted to the National government.
‘Rape doctoR’s victims asked to RecoRd statements Police have appealed to victims of fake doctor Mugo wa Wairimu to come out and record statements to help prepare for charges against him. Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi says none of the alleged victims have recorded a statement with the police to aid the ongoing investigations. The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentist Board also
said it had not received any complaints. A member of the board, Were Onyino said they could only pursue Wairimu for operating illegally since he was not licensed to operate as a doctor. He said the board had received a complaint which led them to order Wairimu to shut down his clinic on June 17 this year for operating illegally. “We received a complaint
about patients being detained there; that is the complaint we are aware about, but other issues of diagnosis and unprofessional conduct within that facility, we have not received any as yet,” he said. Onyino said the only way to press rape charges will be for people who had received services at the clinic and were aware of such misconduct to report to the police or even record
statements with the board. “All the patients who sought services from that clinic and feel they were misdiagnosed or something, then they should be able to come to the board and make a report, then together with the police and other regulatory body then we should be able to come up with a comprehensive charge sheet,” Onyino explained. Police have stepped up the hunt for
the ‘doctor’ who has since gone into hiding while a new team of detectives from the Serious Crimes Unit has already taken over the matter. Police boss Joseph Boinnet on Monday ordered for the immediate arrest of Mugo wa Wairimu who was captured on an expose video raping a sedated victim at one of his prestige healthcare clinics in Githurai. The clinics have since been shut.
Kenya and Italy have signed two agreements to combat unconventional international crimes including terrorism, cybercrimes and wildlife trafficking. The Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance agreements were signed by Kenya’s Attorney General Githu Muigai and Italy’s Minister for Justice Andrea Orlando at a ceremony witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Milan on the sidelines of the Milan Expo 2015. Under the agreements, Kenya the two countries will support each other in domestic investigation and judicial proceedings. “Through this framework, the two States can cooperate in the provision of support to and from each country’s jurisdiction in domestic investigative and judicial proceedings,” the agreements said in part.
Prosecutors interdicted over bribery claims Two prosecutors arrested while taking a bribe in Kisumu last week have been interdicted. Jared Rutto and Herbert Okumu were arrested after receiving Sh15, 000 from a complainant to reinstate his case in court. Police are said to have recommended that the case be dismissed. But a statement from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)’s office says the two will now be charged at the Homa Bay anti-corruption court on Wednesday. “The DPP has directed that upon being charged, the officers be interdicted as required by law pending completion of their trial,” read part of the statement.
ATPU takes up Mall ‘bomb’ scare case The Anti-Terror Police Unit has taken over a case in which three suspects were arrested at the Garden City Mall over a harmless device yesterday. Police said the device was not an Improvised Explosive Device, but was an amateurish collection of phone wires tapped together to look like a bomb. Bomb experts arrived at the scene and “detonateed” it using a small charge for safety measures. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said normalcy has returned at the mall and there is no cause of alarm. ATPU officers picked up the three men for questioning to establish the motive of them trying to sneak in with the device.

Al-Shabaab ‘holding’ Ugandan soldiers The Somalia-based militant Islamist group al-Shabab says it is holding what it describes as Ugandan prisoners of war captured during an attack last week. An Al-Shabaab official said the prisoners were in good health. He did not say how many were being held. Uganda said 12 of its soldiers were killed during the attack on its base in southern Somalia, and that all its troops were accounted for. Western diplomats and residents of the town of Janale, where the attack occurred, said about 100 Ugandans were either dead or missing.

US reopens Somalia mission The US has reopened its mission to Somalia in the latest step in restoring diplomatic ties since it withdrew from the country two decades ago. But the step is an incremental one as the mission itself will be based in Nairobi due to the tenuous security situation in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. “The launch of the U.S. Mission to Somalia is the next step towards reestablishing a diplomatic presence by the United States in Somalia as announced by Secretary Kerry on May 5 during his historic visit to Mogadishu,” State Department Spokesman John Kirby said in a statement announcing the start of mission operations. “U.S. officials will continue to travel to Somalia to conduct official business as security conditions permit,” he added. The mission will also operate, for the time being, without an ambassador. President Barack Obama initially nominated career foreign service officer Katherine Dhanani to fill the post, but she later withdrew herself from consideration for personal reasons. In a Facebook post, she wrote she was “sorry” and had made a “mistake”.
Her use of private email has generated a barrage of criticism as Mrs Clinton runs for the Democratic presidential nomination for the 2016 election. And in Kenya, the emails continue to reveal secrets of strained relationships between

policy, and meant to shield her from oversight. Mrs Clinton apologised for the first time for using a personal account during an interview on Tuesday. “That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility, and I’m trying to be as transparent as I possibly can,” she told ABC news. On her Facebook page Mrs Clinton wrote: “Yes, I should have used two email addresses, one for personal matters and one for my work at the State Department. Not doing so was a mistake. I’m sorry about it, and I take full responsibility,” she wrote. Mrs Clinton continued to deny that she had broken any government rules or laws. She wrote that “nothing I ever sent or received was marked classified at the time”. Political analysts - including fellow Democrats - have said the Clinton campaign has stumbled in its response to the controversy and Mrs Clinton had not seemed contrite - at times even making jokes about the email issue. It has been a major issue in the presidential race. Polls show an increasing number of voters view her
as “untrustworthy” due in part to the questions surrounding her email use. Under US federal law, officials’ correspondence is considered to be US government property. Government employees are encouraged to use official email accounts although some top officials have used personal accounts in the past. The state department has been investigating Mrs Clinton’s use of a personal email server. In March, Mrs Clinton said she and her lawyers made the decision over what would be considered workrelated email when the state department asked for records from former secretaries of state. The emails deemed workrelated were about half of the 60,000 emails she sent in total during her time in office. The emails she deemed personal were deleted, Mrs Clinton said. Since then, the state department has been releasing the emails to the public in batches about once a month. Some of these emails have been censored by the department as they contain classified information.

Rising uncertainty over growth in China and its impact on the global economy meant a Fed decision to raise its policy rate next week, for the first time since 2006, would have negative consequences, Kaushik Basu told the Financial Times. His warning highlights the mounting concern outside the US over the Fed’s potential ‘lift-off ’. It follows similar advice from the International Monetary Fund where anxieties have also grown in recent weeks about the potential repercussions of a September rate rise. That means that if the Fed’s policymakers were to decide next week to raise rates they would be doing so against the counsel of both of the institutions created at Bretton Woods as guardians of global economic stability. www.ft.com

Kenya Orient pays Sh99mn claims for Gikomba fire victims Kenya Orient Insurance has paid Sh99 million in insurance claims settlement for traders whose businesses were destroyed by a fire at the Gikomba Market. Seventy five businesses received cheques of between Sh 750,000 and Sh 4.2 million each to not only put them back in business but to also renew employment opportunities for hundreds of affected employees. Family Bank was among the most affected business where over Sh 25.5 million money was lost in respect of fire but has also been fully settled. “We provided these businesses a safety net through our Orient Business policy and today we are delighted to be paying them so that they can get back into business,” said Kenya Orient CEO
Muema Muindi. All businesses insured by ‘Orient Business’ insurance company, covers businesses against stocks, business related tools and property against the risk of fire, lighting, burglary and all risks ranging from terrorism and political risks among others. “Most of the goods belonging to the traders in their stores were consumed to ashes by the inferno,’’ said Muindi. “The customers who bank with Family Bank had taken out loans with their businesses and goods as collateral and these were in turn insured by Kenya Orient. We have worked hand in hand to ensure that all these claims are processed fast and paid,” said Muindi.
Former Kenya Airways CEO Titus Naikuni has distanced himself from reports that corruption was dominant during his tenure at the airline, insisting he has never been involved in graft. Naikuni was at the helm of the pride of Africa for 11 years and said he never participated in any form of corruption and he is ready and willing to be investigated to clear his name. “I am not aware of any corruption; I have never been involved in corruption. Never! I am open and ready to be investigated,” he said. He was hard-pressed to explain to the senate committee probing Kenya
Airways why the airline retrenched 447 local staffs and later employed 517 foreigners at enviable salaries—an issue still in court. However, Naikuni told the committee that employment of foreigners was above the board, met international standards and the staff were in fact licensed by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). According to him, slow expansion of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport led to the downfall of the Mawingu project which was expected to increase the fleet from 35 to 119 but failed. The former CEO further attributed the Sh 26 billion loss to terrorism and Ebola
outbreak stating that both the Ministry of Health and Transport had barred KQ from the affected routes. Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia appeared before the same committee where he said the routes were to be closed to prevent the spread of the disease adding that they had since directed the airline to re-open the four routes it had advised to cease flying. Immigration Director General Gordon Kihalangwa is expected to appear before the committee next Tuesday to account for how many foreigners are working for the airline and their terms of service.

towards e-commerce, creating a need to equip the reservation desk which serves as the interface between the hotel and the guest with corresponding skills. The move follows a report by the World Travel and Tourism Council, which states that more than 59 per cent of travel is currently done online. A similar report by Euromonitor stated that travelers will usually visit an average of fourteen different sites before finally placing their online booking. “This underlines the importance for any accommodation supplier to come up with an online strategy as well as get fully involved in the customer’s process,” said a statement from Jovago. While reiterating the importance of the training, Estelle Verdier, Managing Director for Jovago East & Southern Africa added that, “meeting and serving the customer at their point of need and demand creates a seamless process that encourage better reviews and more recommendations.”

DJ CK is practicing an extreme case of double standards; the same men rallying against artificial hair are the same ones who want their women to look
spick and span all the time, and let’s face it, Afo hair is not exactly the wash and go type. It is actually offensive to the girls that after investing in cosmetic products worth plots of land to look good, our men never seem charmed. ou know of the saying “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?” Update that to “hell hath no fury like a Kenyan woman wearing a weave scorned!” Kenyan ladies are very angry at one DJ CK, officially known as Chris Kirubi after he confessed on live TV that he hates women who wear “dead people’s hair.” Congratulations Chris Kirubi, you are officially a member of MAWE (Men against Weaves) and yes, MAWE is an actual movement possibly affiliated to Maendeleo ya Wanaume. Kenyan women are by now accustomed to being bashed about their love for artificial hair, so how come the online female fraternity came out guns blazing at Chris Kirubi yesterday for his utterances? “It’s not what he said, but how he said. I mean, dead people’s hair, really?” Says an irate Hilda Kosgei who apart from being a professional makeup artist is also an artificial hair diehard. “I mean, I know some hair extensions are real hair from real people,” she continues. Hilda represents the wider female Kenyan population who men claim have become ‘unbeweavably’ bewitched by the artificial hair trend, with some rendering their men broke all for the love of the weave. Remember Vera Sidika’s
confession that her lustrous weave cost her a whopping Sh 185,000? Chris Kirubi might justify his hate speech against weave wearers owing to the fact that most of the time, the man is the one who incurs the hefty cost of such exorbitant hair but wait, isn’t he supposed to be a billionaire? Whichever reasons he has for harboring such strong sentiments about women’s weaves and wigs, he still speaks for the men in Kenya who find it hard to take pity on a woman with a head ache and who is wearing an expensive weave because in the practical sense, she is carrying around acres of land on her head! On a serious note though, ignorance is no bliss, and Jackline Watetu has had enough. “It is no longer funny that men assume any artificial hair is recycled from dead people’s heads,” she rants. If that was the case, no one would consider wearing such products. Come on men, we are not witches,” she continues. Let us school you on all things hair; wigs, weave and everything in-between-- Men, pay attention. Generally, ladies can pick from either human hair or synthetic hair. PerSonalizing Your office SPace
Y
DIY
ou have just received a call from that intense interview that you attended a few days ago, and lucky for you, you made it through. You now have a job, but wait, that is not the only thing you have. You have an office too…okay it may not be on the coveted top floor by the window overlooking the beautiful city. In fact it’s a tiny cubicle that you can barely stand upright in, but it is still your own space, right? Well, your luck just increased, as X Access now gives you tips on how to make the little space you have been assigned in the office your own, literally. Keep in mind that is your work station You may love reading comics, playing computer games or simply listening to music, but these are the very same things you should steer clear of when personalizing your work desk, because you want to ensure maximum work productivity for yourself. Setting aside
a shelf for your comic collection in your office means that most of your time will be spent reading these comic books instead of concentrating on your designated duties. In short, keep your space practical and useful. Accessorize Not too dramatically though! There are many ways to accessorize, and you will be spoilt for choice when you want to splash up your office space a bit. If you opt to beautify through painting, settle for official colors such as grey, light blue and brown. Generally, do not paint your office with a color you would not go to work dressed in. Painting is not the only way to brighten up your office. You can as well throw in some work couches, a small coffee table and lamp shades which are a better way of embellishing the office with a toned down feel.
HOME IMPROVEMENT If candles and lanterns are too spooky for you, get dim-lighting bulbs, and do not forget to incorporate the items that bring you utter peace when you see, feel or think about them.

hen building homes, we always have specific instructions for our contractors on how to treat the different designated rooms in the house for their purposes such as cooking, eating, sleeping or hosting guests. With the increase of stress levels due to mounting pressure in the work place and also in the social sphere, health experts now recommend that home owners take into consideration adding an extra vital space within their homes; the meditation room. Meditation begun centuries ago, prominently with members of the Buddhist religion but over the years, the practice has come to be universally accepted with the old belief that one engaging in meditation opens up a spiritual realm which could evict evil spirits. In fact meditation has become a prevalent practice in the modern world mainly because of its weight loss properties when combined with yoga postures and acupuncture procedures. All you need for a meditation room is an empty room within your house and with just a simple mat and some pillows and cushions, you are set to let your troubles go with the wind. Meditation rooms require more of redecorating than remodeling. Redecorating is essential to create the necessary ambience for meditation complimented by simple accessories, mainly scented candles or lanterns coupled with a herb burning micro incinerator for special herbs (for the more traditional meditators). If candles and lanterns are too spooky for you, get dim-lighting bulbs, and do not forget to incorporate the items that bring you utter peace when you see, feel or think about them. These could be a painting, a spiritual book or any other item that holds special meaning for you. So what are you still waiting for? Go ahead and create a meditation space in your home, keeping in mind the words of Sogyal Rinpoche, a famous Tibetan monk; “Generally we waste our lives, distracted from our true selves, in endless activity. Meditation is the way to bring us back to ourselves, where we can really experience and taste our full being.”

Total Motorshow to allow exhibitors double deals Exhibitors at the 2015 Total Motorshow are expecting to double their deals in this edition compared to 2013. Simba Corporation Chief Executive Adil Popat says, the show is anticipating to double the number of visitors to 30, 000 since it has come at an opportune time when the country has so many opportunities in transport sector.
“We are seeing a lot of opportunities in devolution with counties in need of tractors, ambulances and just cars for use, other infrastructure projects like the Standard Gauge Railway and mining also present great opportunities,” Popat said. He predicted that by 2015 the transport sector will grow by 20 per cent adding that devolution and infrastructure projects will
propel transport companies to greater heights. However he raised concerns over the weakening shilling that may anticipate motor vehicles to be more expensive pointing out that it is eroding profits as the local currency weakens further against the dollar. “In the future, we will see local companies who import in dollars, selling in dollars in a bid
to avoid the losses brought by the exchange rate,” he said. According to him, there needs to be a transport policy that will both guide the industry go forward and strike the balance between importation of old and new vehicles. The Motorshow which started in 1994 will be held from September 11 to 13.
MiX Telematics expand to improve road safety A leading global provider of fleet and mobile assets management solutions MiX Telematics seeks to expand its operations in the Kenyan market and East African Region within the next three years. To grow its current partner network in East Africa, the company plans to invest a significant percentage of all revenues derived from the region and beyond. MiX Telematics Africa Managing Director Brendan Horan said the company is set to align itself with the local, regional and national government initiatives to not only ensure an efficient but also a safe, secure and compliant transport environment across the country. The National Transport and Safety Authority issued the company an approval of its speed management solutions for all its commercial vehicle operators and has committed to work with NTSA to maintain the certification. “The approval by NTSA means that all our existing clients and new end users continue to enjoy the benefits of our premium fleet management platform in
BIZ BRIEFS Competition among ISPs intensifies Competition among internet service providers has been intensified ahead of an announcement by leading data company, Liquid Telecom in which the firm has been ranked the leading wholesale carrier in Africa. Over the past decade, the cost of internet connectivity has fallen by roughly 90 per cent. While it is seen as a boon for consumers, prices among service providers still remain prohibitive for many Kenyans. As a result, a majority of Kenyan internet users access the World Wide Web through their mobile phones and smart devices. Nevertheless, several data companies have opted to offer bundle services, including unlimited internet packages in a bid to woo consumers.

Boost as rabbit farmers get Online tool to track progress Commercial rabbit farmers can now monitor the health and performance of their herd remotely using a mobile based tool. Dubbed Rabbitiq, the platform provides a round clock veterinary support to farmers as it tracks the animals’ progress from weaning, kindling as well as connecting farmers to ready markets. Derrick Muturi the brains behind Rabbitiq and a rabbit farmer too says upon registration, the platform generates a unique code for each rabbit which the farmer then inserts as an ear tag to each rabbit which generates updates and alerts to the farmer through SMS. “This has come to address a major challenge of trying to give personalized attention to rabbits especially to farmers who are doing it
commercially.’’ Derrick said. Owning 100 plus rabbits, Muturi got into the business commercially to make the best out of it as paper work was cumbersome. According to him, the platform is working with 24 farmers spanning Nairobi, Busia, Mombasa and Nyeri to effectively manage rabbit contagious diseases. The ministry of Agriculture revealed that currently 600,000 rabbits are being reared in Kenya mainly for commercial purposes unlike traditionally where it was treated as a part time activity by teens. Recent scientific studies revealed that rabbit meat has high protein but low fats growing local and international market compared to other meet a move that has inspired a fanatical rearing. Rabbit fur is
highly valued in textile industry especially for making garments for people with joint diseases while its manure is superior in nourishing crops unlike from other animals. “Demand for the rabbit meat and fur is global and companies are pitching tent in the country to encourage farmers and offering them a ready market. The catch therefore is effective management of each rabbit,” said Muturi. From the response he has gotten from the platform, Muturi is planning to replicate the model to pig and chicken farming. “These are two other areas where this model fits perfectly especially because first farmers manage a large herd and secondly individual livestock doesn’t get enough attention.” He concluded.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has led his government to pitch Kenya as a tourism and investment destination at an international expo in Milan, Italy, one of Kenya’s largest sources of tourists. Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Italy has been hosting since May 1. It will run until October 31, 2015. The expo is a platform for the exchange of ideas and shared solutions aimed at spurring employment opportunities by stimulating each country’s creativity and promoting innovation for a sustainable future. The Kenya Tourism Board has said that the President invited the Italian people to tour Kenya and investors to explore possibilities of conducting business in real estate, infrastructure and other forms of trade. “Kenya is unique,” the President explained. “We welcome companies to invest in energy, infrastructure, trade ICT, real estate and to take advantage of Kenya as a hub to Eastern and Southern Africa,” he added.
WhatsApp warns web users of major flaw in their system A bug in the popular messaging service, WhatsApp has put up to 200 million of its users across the globe at risk, Check Point, an international security firm has warned. The flaw allows hackers to distribute malware, including “ransomware”, which forces victims to pay a fee to regain access to their files. However, the vulnerability affects only the web-based version of the service. WhatsApp was alerted to the problem at the end of last month and immediately issued a system update that would rectify the problem, the BBC reports. The firm has reported that there are currently more than 200 million active users of the web app, compared to 900 million users of the smartphone app.

Domestic violence needs to be kept in check
Some parts in our country have been making headlines for all the bad reasons. Recently, a Nyeri chopped off her husband’s genitals and that has got the rest of the Kenyans started with the stereotyping. What happened to those days women used to love their husbands and will do everything to protect their families; when men were highly
regarded with respect and were considered heroes of the land; when men used to be bread winners and would courageously marry even three wives unlike this generation where selfishness, cheating, drinking, immorality and laziness has become a norm? What will deliver us from this evil of domestic violence? — Hannah Karimi, JKUAT

SPORTS BRIEFS Kenya wins seven medals in Samoa youth games Kenya won a total of seven medals including four gold in the just concluded Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa. Despite entering a paltry eight athletes, only one, Joyline Cheruitich, missed a medal when she finished fourth in both the girls 1500m and 800m. Willy Tarbei (800m), Kumari Taki (1500m), Davis Kiplangat and Sheila Chelangat all returned gold in girls and boys 3000m respectively. Africa’s champion Bett Kipyegon won silver in the boy’s 800m while Lawis Kosgei and Richard Yator returned home with 1500m and 3000m silvers respectively. The game brought together more than 100 youth from 107 countries.
Kisorio, Chepkurui to defend Ndakaini half marathon titles Mathew Kisorio and Irene Chepkurui will be defending their titles in this Saturday’s UAP Ndakaini half marathon which has attracted more than 3,500 runners. Unfortunately, the event organisers will not implement Athletics Kenya’s (AK) directive to ensure athletes are subjected to doping test. “Accusation that local athletes dope is a disservice to the hard work put forward by athletes, considering the amount of work put into to shade off that extra second,” said Old Mutual UAP Insurance group managing
director James Wambugu. “However, we will not be doing doping test because we do not have the capacity. That is something we have been discussing with AK and hope that we will include it in our future plans,” he said. Registration for the race which started with only 390 runners in 2004 closed last Sunday with more than 4,000 registered, an increase of 500 from last year’s 3,500. Security will also be tightened in and along the course with fans being subjected to thorough
frisking at different entry points. Use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) introduced last year is expected to offer precise timing for all runners in the 21 kilometres and 10 kilometres race. The electronic timing will be used for the second time and the organisers are optimistic the new technology will be accepted by IAAF should anyone break the record or post a new personal best. The race is expected to start and end on the road following the re designing of the course, another
attempt by the organisers to give the race an international face. “The desire to make the race an international event is real, that is why we are introducing electronic timing and the road,” said Wambugu. The Prize money has also been increased from Sh1.3 million to Sh1.5 million with the winners in each categories pocketing Sh200,000. The organisers expect to raise about Sh5 millions to the local community. At least 36 corporate teams have also registered for the race.
Kenyan boxers enter medal bracket in All Africa games Two Kenya boxers are in contention to win medals in the ongoing All Africa Games in Congo, Brazzaville after reaching the quarter-finals. This is a good number for Kenya which is on its reconstruction path after several years of wrangles in the boxing coupled with poor performance. Nick Okoth and Samson Mulinge both qualified for the quarters with wins over Cameroonian Tchwem Foukoua and Prince Moukouyou from Congo in the in the lightweight and flyweight categories respectively. However, Tobias Ayot and Dennsi Shihia have since bowed out of the competition. Ayot and Shihia lost to Nigerian opponents Dan Woko Ekele while Shisia (super heavyweight) and Efe Ajagbaa. Kenya performance in Karate was not impressive after Anthony Fondo lost to defending champion Danny Minisa from Gabon in the under-67kg. This came a few minutes after Rose Wanjiku had lost to Rosa Muchanga of Mozambique in the under-55kg event on Monday.
Malaysia, Saudi World Cup qualifier stopped due to crowd trouble
A World Cup qualifier between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia was abandoned just before full-time on Tuesday due to crowd trouble. Visiting team Saudi Arabia were leading the Group ‘A’ Asian qualifier 2-1 at Shaha Alam Stadium when flares and fireworks were thrown on to the pitch. Malaysia suffered a record 10-0 defeat by the United Arab Emirates last week. That loss, which left them bottom of their group, led to Dollah Salleh resigning as head coach. Interim coach Ong Kim Swee had urged fans not to disrupt the game in protest at the UAE result. Meanwhile, Syria - who are playing all their games away from home because of the civil war in the country - won their third straight World Cup qualifying match, beating Cambodia 6-0 in Phnom Penh on Tuesday. Syria, who have scored 13 goals without conceding any, tops Group E with nine points. The country has never qualified for a World Cup.

Serena Williams beat sisters, Venus to reach US open semis Serena Williams overcame her sister Venus at the US Open to move within two victories of her first calendar Grand Slam. The world number one held her nerves to win 6-2 1-6 6-3 and reach the semi-finals in New York to set a date with unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci in the last four tomorrow. The American could become the first player to win all four majors in the same year since Steffi Graf in 1988. Venus, 35, was playing in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2010, but threatened to derail her sister’s grand ambitions. The 23rd seed battled back to force a final set, only to see younger sister Serena, 33, capitalise on an early service break and claim her 33rd straight win at the Slams. The Williams sisters have played
each other 26 times on the professional circuit, but their 27th contest was as highly anticipated as any. Serena already has won all the four Slam titles, but her bid to win all of them in the same year has elevated tennis in the US sporting headlines. A lengthy preceding match meant Tuesday’s night session was delayed, and expectancy rose outside Arthur Ashe Stadium as 23,000 spectators waited to take their seats for the night session. The early excitement was tempered by Serena’s excellent start, but Venus gave a reminder of why she is a seven-time major champion by taking it to a final set. “She’s the toughest player I have ever played in my life and the best person,” said Serena. “It is going against your best friend and the greatest competitor, in
women’s tennis, so it was really difficult for me today.” “Losing is not fun, but probably the most gratifying part is I am
still very excited to see Serena have an opportunity to win the four majors,” said Venus.

Kenya’s Judy Tarus serves the ball during a past match at Africa Nations Championship against Nigeria at Nazarene University. The youth volleyball team is participating in the ongoing All African Games in Congo.
Kenya needs only a win to reach AAG Volleyball quarter-final in Congo Kenya only needed an hour and five minutes to register their second win when they downed Nigeria 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-19) in Pool B of Women’s All Africa Games on Tuesday. Kenya’s opposite Esther Mwombe, centre blocker turned outside hitter Joan Chelegat and centre Edith Mukuvilani both of Kenya Prisons led the scorers of the winner with 11 points each, while Nigeria’s Mercy Promise led the losers and match scorers with 13 points. Kenya improved their win loss ratio to 2-1, while Nigeria dropped to 1-2. Kenya’s blocker played the main role in the victory with the girls marking 15/4 in stuff blocks throughout the match to make it harder for Nigerians to penetrate their defence. The Kenyan sharp service also was potent in the match action figuring 8/1 advantage for the winners. The win helped them keep pace with Group B leaders Cameroon who outclassed Mozambique 3-0 (25-9, 25-
11, 25-10) in another encounter. The victory is the third for the West African country to stay as the only unbeaten team in Pool B with 3-0 record with eight points while Kenya has seven. Paul Gitau charges just need a straight set win in their remaining two matches to sail to quarters. Theornine Aboa scored 15 points for Cameroon followed by Stephanie Fotsu with 14 points. Cameroon were superior in both spiking and blocking beside the spike service they played throughout the match. Meanwhile, Kenya senior team head coach David Lung’aho believes Kenya would have finished higher than their 10th place in the just concluded FIVB world Cup in Japan had they played Cuba and Dominican Republic in the last matches. Lung’aho won only two of their 11 matches and while this was an improvement from their last performances where they
won only a match, the performance was not ‘good’ enough for some local fans, who expressed their displeasure with the team’s overall performance. The coach though seemed to be contented with the result and his players’ performance when he touched down yesterday at the JKIA from Japan. “As we sit here it means that somebody somewhere is not impressed by the result (in Japan) but we need to appreciate these girls. If you go through the history books you will realise they did their best,” he said. “I still believe we could have won against Cuba and Dominican Republic had we played them towards the end of the tournament. That is a lesson learnt and we now shift our focus to Olympics qualifiers,” said Lung’aho who did not say whether he will lead Kenya to the Olympics qualifiers which start early next year.
Ex-Uganda Cranes manager faces 18 years jail term over sodomy Former Uganda Cranes manager Chris Mubiru faces up to 18 years in jail if he’s found guilty of sodomy charges. Mubiru (pictured) appeared in a Ugandan court on Tuesday faced with sodomy charges after being accused several times of lust for his male colleagues. Mubiru who also had a stint as manager at Bunamwaya (current Vipers) was arrested on December 15 last year over the acts and later released
on police bond a week later according to Ugandan website Kawowo.com He is reported to have enticed many footballers and officials into the act, but there was no evidence despite his name coming up in all debates concerning homosexuality. At one time in 2008, SC Villa fans forced him out at Villa Park, but a one Nakamanya ended up in jail for his ejection. In 2005, Egyptian Coach Muhammad Abbas called a
press conference and made it clear that a certain official on the team tried to rape his players as the Cranes were preparing for a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde which the Cranes won 1-0 courtesy of Geoffrey Sserunkuma’s solitary strike. In one column entitled “Top Ten: Sex scandals that rocked Ugandan Sports” in The Observer on February 7 2010, they wrote about the Cranes sodomy scandal that Abbas had talked about in 2006 and
vividly said the player Mubiru tried to rape was David Kalungi and the player had allegedly identified the rapist as Chris Mubiru. In Uganda where gaysm is illegal, sodomy charges fetch up to years in jail.

England striker Wayne Rooney celebrates after breaking his country’s all-time goalscroing record with a penalty strike against Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifying match yesterday.

ayne Rooney erased Sir Bobby Charlton’s 45-year-old all-time England goalscoring record with an 84th minute penalty in England’s 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley last night at a Euro 2016 qualifying match. Rooney, England captain equalled Charlton’s tally of 49 with a penalty in the victory against San Marino on Saturday that booked the Three lions a place in France next summer. And he was on the spot again on Tuesday against the Swiss for goal number 50 to erase a record that has stood for 45 years. It looked like Rooney might be made to wait until England’s meeting with Estonia at Wembley next month as Switzerland frustrated Roy Hodgson’s side until their resistance was eventually broken. England substitute Harry Kane pierced the deadlock with a
crisp finish after 67 minutes and Rooney rewrote the history books with a thunderous penalty six minutes from time, earning a standing ovation from the Wembley gallery. It ensured his side completed eight wins out of eight, securing top spot in Group E. A roar of anticipation swept around Wembley as soon as Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi pointed to the spot after Raheem Sterling had been brought down in the box. With the weight of expectation and history on his shoulders, Rooney made no mistake with an emphatic right-footed penalty that gave Swiss keeper Yann Sommer no chance, even though he got a hand to it. As he celebrated, the crowd of 75,751 inside Wembley - joined by manager Hodgson and his backroom team - rose to acclaim the 29-year-old as he was engulfed by team-mates. Even the travelling Swiss fans generously
recognised the significance of the moment. History had been made. With Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck dealing with long-term injury problems, Hodgson will be eager to see others stake their claim to partner Rooney at Euro 2016 in France next summer. And 21-year-old Spurs striker Harry Kane is making a compelling case with his second successive goalscoring appearance as a substitute. Kane looks sharp at international level, scoring with a wonderfully composed chip in San Marino then drilling home a low finish against Switzerland to end the stalemate. He has a well-rounded, mature game and approach and has time to develop further before France. Kane’s efforts with England may well have beneficial spinoffs for Tottenham, who have been waiting for him to find a spark this season. His spell on
international duty may well have provided it. It is hard for anyone to stake a serious claim in a game that was drab and dull for the better part of the 90 minutes. England performed like a side that had already qualified for Euro 2016 and Switzerland did not contain the quality to make them pay for their below-par performance. It was a bitter night for Manchester City’s Fabian Delph, who went down withan hamstring injury inside 15 seconds and now faces another spell on the sidelines. The big winners were Manchester United pair Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling, who were both outstanding. Shaw excelled in defence and attack while Smalling confirmed the growing stature he has shown for United this season. Everton’s Ross Barkley flitted in and out of the game while Swansea City midfield man Jonjo Shelvey faded after a bright first 20 minutes.
