Raila unearths major Jubilee secret deals C

ord leader Raila Odinga has opened another scathing attack against the Jubilee administration accusing it of secretively implementing a disastrous mega project in the country. Mr Odinga warned if fully implemented, the water project dubbed ‘ northern collector tunnel’ will turn parts of the country in to a desert within the next five years. He questioned why the government ignored has put it under secrecy and under heavy security with a total disregard of environmental regulations and public participation. He now wants the project stopped until all environmental assessment issues are addressed based on all necessary data and impacts. “The president needs to explain to the nation and more particularly the people of Murang’a why the project is run under secrecy and heavy security. We know this is a regime desperate to launch projects but on this one they remained silent,” the former PM said.

I will not curtail Media Freedom, judge Visram tells JSC panel MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2016

Court of Appeal judge Alnashir Visram has assured members of the fourth estate that he will not curtail their freedom should he make it to the Supreme Court as a judge. Visram who was the first to be interviewed in this morning as the interviews for the Supreme Court judges kicked off, said he will not use his office to curtail the freedom of the media. “I will not use my office to curtail media freedom,” he said. His confession is of utmost significance given that he has been viewed as not tolerant to the industry. The appellate judge, known for having a flair for making landmark rulings, ruled a case in favour of former powerful minister Nicholas Biwott who had sued the Standard Newspaper for defamation, awarding him Sh30 million in the process. Visram also highlighted the need for Judiciary to safeguard its independence when handling political matters, exemplifying incidences of previous meddling between the He acknowledged that despite concerted efforts by former immediate CJ Willy Mutunga, there exists a lack of adequate dialogue between the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the High Court. He noted that more still needed to be done to increase interaction among the three courts without having to wait for the annual colloquium that brings them together. Also slated to appear before the

Odinga raised concerns that the project was designed, commissioned and construction commenced before Nema approved all the impact assessments. “ Nema did not approve its environment assessment. It was haphazardly done. Its not even in their achievements,” added Raila. According to Raila, the county assembly of Murang’a had objected its implementation but were coerced by forces from ‘above’ to accept it. “The Muranga County Assembly Environmental Committee is on record complaining about this issue and saying that it was surprising that geotechnical investigation had not been done,” he added. Nema has since warned that tunneling activities may lead to alterations of underground drainage and fracture flows would make the region a desert.

Agnes Murgor however failed to appear before the panel and asked that the commission use her interview for the Deputy Chief Justice to assess her suitability for the Supreme Court judge

post. The JSC is seeking to find a replacement for the Supreme Court judge post after it was vacated by retired Justice Philip Tunoi, who had attained the limit of 70 years allowable by the constitution promulgated in 2010. 21 candidates have been shortlisted by the commission. He had fought to defend his seat at the court basing it on the argument that

he was appointed under the previous constitution that capped service at the Judiciary at 74 years. The justice left the arm of government in acrimonious fashion, with a cloud of corruption charges hanging over him after he was alleged to have received a Sh200 million bribe from Nairobi governor Evans Kidero to rule in his favour during an election petition against him. @harrison_x254

Road users who fail to observe traffic lights, the zebra crossings or any other public directional signs will be penalised up to Sh50, 000, if a proposed law at the Nairobi City County Assembly becomes law. The bill dubbed ‘Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill 2016’ proposes a raft of measures aimed among other things bringing to an end the perpetual flouting of traffic and recurring misconduct of Matatu touts soliciting for passengers at undesignated areas especially within the Central Business District(CBD). Matatus who will be found on the wrong side of the law will also not be spared as the fine applies across board. The proposed law drafted by controversial Viwandani MCA Samuel Nyangwara seeks to penalise individuals who have continually turned a blind eye to the basic traffic rules. “Any person who, on any street fails to observe traffic lights or the zebra crossing or any other public directional signs, commits an offence,” reads part of the Bill. The bill which underwent its first reading on Tuesday last week during the assembly plenary session, also places a hefty fine of Sh50,000 on motorists who fail to obey traffic lights as they risk finding themselves in the City Hall Court. The proposal by-law will also cover littering

offences for banana peels and orange shells, among others. According the Bill, hawkers found selling, distributing conducting any outdoor advertising of any article or events through shouting or uses any bell, or noisy instrument like loudspeakers shall be penalised if not licensed by the relevant authorities. The Bill gives County reinforcing agents sweeping powers to compel Nairobi residents to keep their premises free of “offensive and unwholesome matter.” “The Department shall if satisfied that a public nuisance exists serve a notice on

the owner or if the owner cannot be found, on the occupier of the premises to remove the nuisance within a specified period in notice,” reads the Bill. If the Bill is passed, it will address lack of enough space for cemeteries, owing to the fact that the available Lang’ata Cemetery is already full occupied. “The objective of this Act is to provide for the control of public nuisances, including waste and disease-causing pests; and in order to ensure a clean and healthy environment,” states the Bill further. hillary_x254

The workers were arrested after DPP Keriako Tobiko agreed with police recommendations for charges against them. This followed investigations into the death of 42-year old cancer patient Cosmas Mutunga on November 29, 2015. The management of Kenyatta National Hospital was pushed in September to give a public report on internal investigations concerning Mutunga’s death. KNH had not received the CID’s report, 11 months after the mysterious death. The hospital had termed the case an isolated one and pledged to fully cooperate with investigators. According to Hospital chief executive Lily Koros the patient underwent the usual “hourly observation”, which included turning him from side to side because of his state of health. Kaparo wants tribal associations in Universities banned

Tribal associations and groups in both public and private universities should be banned as part of the measures to end tribalism in the country. Chairman National Cohesion and Integration Commission Francis Ole Kaparo (pictured below) has urged University administration not allow students to such groups as they only promote tribalism. “All tribal associations in universities must be banned if we are to make progress in the realization of a tribal free country,” Kaparo said Kaparo said such associations only fuels animosity among the diverse communities in Universities hence there is no need for their existence. He urged University Vice Chancellors to encourage students to join professional bodies such as the Law Society of Kenya instead of tribal associations. “We have no problem with students joining professional associations that help them grow in their careers but we will not allow tribal associations that only promote division among Kenyans,” Kaparo said. The NCIC chairman pointed out that Universities should be accommodative to all students as they are learning centres which brings students from different ethnic ground. Kaparo said the commission will as from this week start sending letters to the counties and instutions that were found to have failed to integrate regional policy in employment The law requires that at least 30 percent of workers in the counties should be from the non-dominant tribe in the region.

Republican nominee Donald Trump faces off with his Democrat counterpart Hillary Clinton during the second presidential debate yesterday at the Washington University in St Louis.

US election: Trump launches ferocious attack on Clintons Donald Trump has defended his obscene remarks about groping women by launching a blistering attack against Hillary Clinton and her husband. The Republican nominee denied ever sexually assaulting women, but turned his fire on ex-President Bill Clinton in a bitter US presidential debate. “There’s never been anybody in the history of politics that has been so abusive to women,” he said. Hillary Clinton refused to address his comments about her husband. Mr Trump’s attack on the Clintons came after moderator Anderson Cooper asked him about a 2005 video recording released on Friday that revealed Mr Trump bragging about groping women. But when pressed by moderator Anderson Cooper on whether he had engaged in sexual misconduct with any women, he denied doing so and instead focused on Mr Clinton’s previous indiscretions. No criminal charges have been brought against Mr Clinton in any allegations of sexual assault. Mrs Clinton said the explosive video, which has sparked an exodus of Republicans denying support to their presidential nominee, showed

who Mr Trump really was. “With prior Republican nominees, I disagreed with them,” she added, “but I never questioned their fitness to serve. “I think it’s clear to anyone who heard [the video] that it represents exactly who he is.” When the two took to the stage in St Louis for their second of three debates, they did not shake hands, striking a bitter tone that would continue throughout. Mr Trump said if he won, he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Mrs Clinton and she would be in prison over her private email arrangements. “Everything he just said is absolutely false but I’m not surprised,” she responded. “It’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country.” “Because you’d be in jail,” he interrupted. Mr Trump also said his Democratic rival “has tremendous hate in her heart” while criticising her for referring to his supporters as “deplorables”. Mrs Clinton said she apologised for the comment, adding: “My argument is not with his supporters, it’s with him, about the hateful and divisive campaign he has run.”

The two also sparred on the conflict in Syria, Russian aggression, Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns and his plan for the “extreme vetting” of immigrants arriving from countries with links to terrorism. The evening concluded when an audience member asked the candidates to say one positive thing about each other. Mrs Clinton said his children were a great reflection of him while Mr Trump called his opponent “a fighter” who never gives up. An hour before the debate began, Mr Trump appeared at a press conference with women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct. He joined three women who allege the former president sexually assaulted them and called the women “very courageous”. The Republican was under immense pressure after making obscene comments about women in the video. At least 33 senior Republicans - including senators, members of Congress, and state governors - have withdrawn their support since the video surfaced on Friday.

CRA accuses Senators and MCAs for derailing devolution

The Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) has accused Senators and members of county assemblies (MCAs) of derailing and sabotaging devolution by starving counties of any additional funding. In its annual report to Parliament, CRA says its frequent altercations with senators over its push for higher allocation to counties is because they are afraid of direct control of resources handled by county governors. “Just like MPs, MCAs, Deputy governors and national government officials, senators have chosen to undermine devolution after realising that direct control of resources has handed Governors a lot of influence, ” CRA states in its report. The commission said in the just ended financial year 2014/2015, the Senate frustrated its bid to raise the portion of revenue that devolved units would have received in the next three fiscal years starting July 2017 based on the development

factor. CRA had proposed to allocate 23 percent of 2016/17 shareable revenue to counties as their equitable share as a single and unconditional block grant to carry out devolved functions. In their wrangling with the commission, senators cut the weight of development factor in the shareable revenue sharing formula to just one per cent. Shareable revenue is mainly tax revenue collected locally, sometimes also called “ordinary revenue which comprises income, VAT and other taxes collected by national government. However, shareable revenue does not include loans or grants. Under the Constitution, senators are supposed to defend devolution but the commission that recommends the basis for sharing revenue between the national and the county governments, said the senators have shown little commitment in executing their responsibilities. “We took senators on retreat in Naivasha and

Mombasa but we could not convince them to embrace our formula,” lamented the commission’s chairman Micah Cheserem (pictured). Cheserem urged senators no to fight devolution but instead develop a willing heart to defend

devolution and the interests of the counties. Cheserem accused MCAs of holding governors at ransom. The commission disclosed that governors who differ with MCAs are constantly under threat of impeachment. The commission also accused the national government of undermining devolution by retaining the provincial administration in its old form and failing to surrender the roads function to the counties. The commission said that roads function is still being managed by the national despite it being devolved by the constitution. In thwarted proposal to the senate, CRA had pointed out that the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) were still carrying out devolved functions and recommends that their budgets (nearly Ksh 28 billion, based on 2016/17 projections from the current year budget) be included in the equitable share to counties.

Amref has urged the private sector to supplement the government’s efforts in ensuring better and improved African healthcare services. The call comes after the just concluded African Business Symposium revealed that a growing urban middleclass is willing to pay for better healthcare services. The symposium brought together key players from the government, the private sector and the civil society to develop a framework for greater private sector engagement in African healthcare. Amref Health Africa Group CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi, stressed the importance of making healthcare a profitable venture for private sector through public private partnerships (PPPs). “Close to 50 per cent of expenditure in African healthcare comes from private sector. There is a clear opportunity for private sector, what we need to do to tap into this opportunity is to ensure that private sector gets a reasonable return on investment,” said Dr. Gitahi. He confirmed that private sector has started playing a new vibrant role in African healthcare, often working in partnership with

donors and governments, to provide better healthcare solutions and increased access to medicine at affordable prices. “PPPs are the model that will work. We need a clear framework for partnerships, one that serves the interests of government, private sector and non-governmental players,” he said, adding that an emphasis by the government on Universal Health Coverage was a precondition for profitable private sector engagement in healthcare. The call comes at a time when health experts have warned that more of Kenya’s young

generation is likely to suffer from heart attacks and related diseases over the years. Medicl practitioners have therefore called for greater awareness to reduce these numbers. Non-communicable disease are on the increase, eating deeper into low income Kenyans’ wages, a trend projected to skyrocket to unprecedented rates should key players take it for granted. Over 1,000 people die from heart illnesses, while cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks are seen as the number-one cause of death in adults over 30.

More than 1.6 million to benefit from Sh28 billion water project MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2016

Over 1.6 million people living in some of the country’s poor urban areas are set to benefit from a Sh28 billion water project between Germany and Kenya. The deal would see Germany commit Sh28 billion (250 million Euros) that will ensure the development of clean water over the next two years, according to Berlin’s Ambassador to Nairobi, Mrs Jutta Frasch has said. Mrs Frash said that negotiations for the funds between Kenya and Germany were concluded last month and the money would be expended in 2017 and 2018. The Ambassador said that water was one of the sectors that would greatly benefit from the funding. She was speaking at the opening of first ever Kenya-German Water Week at the Kenya Water Institute. Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, who officially opened the conference, said that accelerated involvement of the private sector in water provision would enable the country to address its water scarcity. “Kenya is a water-scarce country. Sixty-five per cent in urban areas are covered and only 49 per cent in rural areas. Sanitation stands at 20 per cent. Continued urbanization leads to more demand. Our economic growth is

Barclays unveils stock brokerage subsidiary Barclays Bank of Kenya has launched its stock brokerage subsidiary, Barclays Financial Services Limited (BFSL), which will be led by local stock brokers. Jeremy Awori, the Bank’s Managing Director, said the Kenyan brokerage will be bringing a range of new investment products and services to the country’s vibrant financial market. BFSL will offer cash equity trading services, fixed income and bond trading and derivatives. “BFSL is set to bring far more to the Kenyan market than a solid capital base, embedded continental reach and a market leading brokerage team. We have combined these elements for a purpose, and that is to launch new services, new investment options and a new level of research in our stock broking market,” Awori said. It will also offer a key research portal, Barclays Live, providing global research, indices, data and analytical tools, and client sectorbased research across agriculture, business services, commodities,

financial institutions, global development organisations, healthcare manufacturing, transport and logistics. The new brokerage subsidiary is also planning to launch Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), working closely with the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) under the new NSE rules. As a wholly bank-owned subsidiary, BFSL will have foreign desks in nine other African markets including Botswana, Ghana, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. “We believe that this will contribute to the rise in the competitive position of the Nairobi Securities Exchange,” Awori said. Kenya is currently the third largest stock-market hub in Sub-Saharan Africa after the South African JSE and Nigeria’s SEC, but its move into ETFs is poised to make it an even more competitive investment hub.

Njoroge named Central Bank Governor of the Year Central Bank of Kenya Governor, Patrick Njoroge has been named Central Bank Governor of the Year in the Sub Saharan Africa at the 10th African Banker Awards. The award was in recognition of Njoroge’s efforts in cleaning up the Kenyan banking sector and his efforts in steering transparency in Kenya’s banking sector. The CBK Governor emerged top for his integrity where Judges praised him for curbing inflation and re-establishing order in Kenya’s banking industry. The ceremony was held in Washington DC. Honours are given to governors who successfully transform their countries’ financial sectors through proper regulations and policies. Winners of this year’s awards were selected from over 200 entries from across the continent. Njoroge emerged top despite a June crisis where lending institutions appeared to be curcling the drain with lenders such as Chase Bank closing their doors. Njoroge, who for over years served at the IMF, further helped in preventing other banks from going astray and also brought Chase Bank back from the brink. @enock_x254

NIC Bank to issue fewer credit cards NIC Bank will issue fewer credit cards and may demand collateral in some cases due to the recently-introduced government cap on lending rates, CEO John Gachora has said. The government capped commercial lending rates at 400 basis points above the Central Bank’s Benchmark Rate (CBR). The CBR, which is now at 10 per cent, seeks to rein in banks which it said were making increased profits at the expense of clients. A number of the country’s 45 lenders have reduced their unsecured loans to customers deemed risky, since the rate cap while privately-owned Family Bank, has offered its staff voluntary early retirement packages in a bid to cut costs. Gachora said it was now riskier to issue cards. His sentiments come at a time when the credit card business accounts for Sh100 million of NIC’s annual revenue. Gachora said it had been growing fast before the rate cap as more Kenyans had disposable income in line with the expanding economy.

Royco launches nationwide food education campaign Spice manufacturer, Royco has launched a nationwide food education campaign that seeks to empower today’s healthfocused consumer with the requisite information before making decisions on food purchases. The campaign will seek to impart the public with knowledge on use of additives, processing, preservation and food handling, food related illnesses as well as nutrition education. Speaking in Nairobi, Unilever Kenya’s Marketing Director, Agnes Kitololo noted that today’s food consumer is more knowledgeable. “Their opinion causes a ripple effect on consumer trends especially those concentrated around food. Today, we are more conscious of food safety than past generations, as well as more invested in finding food adventures; food that delivers a new flavor or new take on healthy indulgences”, noted Kitololo. The campaign will rope in health experts - Nutritionists, Doctors and Chefs - to guide food enthusiasts on how to prepare good tasting food while ensuring the ingredients and process used adhere to the highest food safety standards. “Patients unfortunately suffer from food-related illnesses such as hyperacidity, poisoning, allergies because of misinformation about what triggers certain negative reactions in our digestive systems and even how to viably interpret and manage the signs and symptoms as well as these conditions,” notes Wellness Strategist, Ms. Wanjiku Wairia. Wanjiku further noted that it is essential for consumers to be able to correctly interpret food labels, understand which seasonings are best used in cooked or uncooked food, as well as the importance of food hygiene. Royco is an iconic brand, and has been in the East African market for almost three decades. The brand has championed good food through engaging consumer campaigns such as ‘Fuata Flava’, amongst others. “As a brand, Royco believes that everyone should be able to prepare and enjoy good food, every single day of the week. Good food has the magic of touching all our senses, with exciting aroma, good taste and actually putting smiles on our faces,” concluded Kitololo.

KEBS, ARSO to sensitize scholars on standardization practices The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), in collaboration with the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), is for a fourth time, inviting undergraduate and graduate students at Kenyan universities and colleges to participate in an essay contest on standardization. The Essay competition, themed “Role of Standardization in Facilitating Human Rights with particular focus on the Rights of Women”, aims at reaching out to students and educating them on Women’s rights and how standards play a role in protecting these rights. of study, is an opportunity for youth to articulate their vision for Kenya’s emerging national agenda, while generating and sustaining awareness of standardization among the youth in Kenya. “We are delighted to announce this essay contest for students in Kenya, as it provides an important opportunity to encourage youth to engage with issues of importance to their country,” stated Mr Chris Kibet, Director of Communication and Human Resources at KEBS Kibet said that Kenya has experienced important social and political reforms in recent decades, adding that it is thus essential for people to understand the perspective of youth on key

challenges relating to human rights policy. Candidates must structure their essays around one of the following five priority areas: an explanation of the problems being faced by women

in Africa today in relation to human rights, general understanding of standards; general knowledge of the situation in Africa regarding to human rights; how standards contribute Human Rights with

particular focus on the Rights of Women; a clear example on how standards have in the past assisted in solving issues related to human rights in the country. The contest is being hosted as part of a campaign that will lead to ARSO celebrating Africa Standardization Day in February 2017. The top three winners will be presented with certificates and cash prizes of Sh70,000, Sh60,000 and Sh50,000 respectively. The essays will further be forwarded to ARSO to compete with others from the African continent. Winners are to be feted during the ASRSO general assembly in Burkina Faso on June, 2017. @enock_x254

SAUTI ACADEMY KEEPS PRODUCING SOME OF THE GREATEST TALENT IN THE COUNTRY.

KALAHI’s sound is an amalgamation of everything that it SERRO

new acts to watch out for

takes to make a big star great. It is a combination of RnB, jazz, soul and a little bit of pop. The singer who has her origins in the famed Sauti Academy is taking on a weary music industry with a bright spark and a fresh sound. Her debut single ‘Kitunguu’ which is a play on the concept the tears cutting onions inevitably bring and the correlation with a broken heart, is not only clever but it’s also a moving and a soulful introduction. The singer draws inspiration from life experienceS and the truth is apparent from her sound.

MS KEMUNTO

Sauti Academy keeps producing some of the greatest talent in the country. Ms Kemunto is no exception, the singer has a sound that is equal parts jazzy, nostalgic and idyllic. An artiste with a distinct point of view and a sadly sweet voice, which is just as powerful as it is poignant. Her singles all available on SoundCloud tell stories of love lost and love found while remaining relatable and easy to consume on the whole. Her biggest triumph is the way she merges different genres to create something original and compelling.

SERRO

Her YouTube channel is filled with stirring covers of big hits and acoustic renditions. Another alumnus of Penya Africa and thus Sauti Academy, this songstress has produced one of the biggest slow-burners of the year so far. The voice behind ‘Rongai’, now an anthem, celebrating the settlement and its vibrant matatu culture, has had a smashing hit on her hands with the single. Produced by Sauti Sol guitarist Polycarp O t i e n o , the song is a sure winner. Teaming up with Kalahi earlier this year, the singers performed at Kasha, their own creation and it was a soulful endevour.

ROSA

The sensual Rosa is not a new name among some circles. The songstress has been hustling since she was a teenager. Signed to label Flag 42, her sound is described as Afro-fusion and RnB, with a playful voice and killer looks to boot the singer is going nowhere but up. Her debut album known as ‘Original Copy’ contains the hit single ‘Rudi Nyumbani’, a big band infused love song, which she coos and belts out through and takes full advantage of her vocal prowess. Trump goes on a verbal assault following release of lewd recording

Over the weekend a recording of Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump and media personality Billy Bush regarding the former’s failed attempt at wooing a married woman set the internet on fire. In the clip from 2005, Trump and Bush discuss the ins and outs of being a male celebrity, Trump explains to Bush, “Grab them by the p***y.” As Bush absently agrees with him, he expounds on his exploits, “I moved on her like a b***h, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married,” he speaks on married TV host Nancy O’Dell. Although this incident has caused a media firestorm, it did not stop Trump from digging into Hilary Clinton’s husband’s sexual history during this week’s Presidential Debate. “No one in the history of this nation has been as abusive to women. Bill Clinton was abusive to women,” he said.

Chris Brown puts on show stopping performance despite earlier furor

US singer Chris Brown had fans begging for more after his set at the Mombasa Rocks Festival last Saturday. Brown’s performance which lasted for over an hour, included the hits ‘Zero’, ‘She Ain’t You’ and ‘Deuces,’ it featured his signature dance moves and two back up dancers as he blew through his set list. The show had appearances from Tanzanian songstress Vanessa Mdee and bongo star Ali Kiba in the mix including fellow headliner and Nigerian sensation Wizkid. Although his arrival in the country was marred with controversy the singer displayed that he was truly a showman at the end of the night and gave it his all.

In this praise tune, Daddy Owen and Congo-bred Rigan Sarkozi perform a rendition of a traditional African hymn, of course updated for a modern audience. Produced by RKay, the song hearkens to grand church songs that get everybody moving. The song has Congolese roots and Rigan Sarkozi does this part well in carrying the song’s original meaning, Daddy Owen complements this by putting his own spin on the culturally significant tune.

Rooney booed as England secure a 2-0 win over Malta MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2016

England Captain Wayne Rooney received a rude shock after the Wembley crowd jeered him alluding to his performance Saturdays’ match against Malta. Despite the booing, England managed to carry away the three points with a 2-0 win over lowly Malta with Daniel Sturridge giving an early lead and Dele Alli securing their win in the second half. Rooney, who has scored one goal in 12 games for club and country this season, was barracked by a small section of the 81,000 fans as he played in midfield. Teammates defend Rooney’s saying he put in a fantastic performance for his team. Rooney’s position in the team has been called into question given the emergence of the likes of Harry Kane, Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli in attack, along with the fact he has been a substitute in Manchester United’s past three games. But England’s interim manager Gareth Southgate defended the 30-year-old after his side’s second World Cup qualifier, saying the criticism was “at times unfair”. Manchester City defender Stones believes England’s record goal scorer is a victim of his own high standards, after scoring 53 goals in 117 appearances for his country. “He wears his heart on his sleeve

and gives 110% and you can see that in every performance,” said Stones, 22. “I am a bit shocked that the booing happened. “He is always up there and on form. The top players are always going to

get the stick that gets piled on them because of the standards he sets.” Liverpool midfielder Henderson added: “He’s our captain and our leader and is a fantastic player for both Manchester United and

England. He put in a fantastic performance, got on the ball well and broke it up too to win it back for us. “There’s always going to be criticism and we just have to stay together and win games. “I feel the criticism comes because the fans know we have good players and want us to do well.” Despite being deployed in a deeper role, Rooney had five shots, the joint-highest total in the team alongside Sturridge, who scored the opening goal. However, he has scored only once in his past seven internationals. But Henderson explained the team had a plan to execute, and Rooney played a clear role in that. “Our instructions were to make sure we communicated and to make sure that both of us didn’t get ahead of the ball and leave gaps in the middle,” he said.

One time world football champions France will tonight battle out with Netherlands in group A matches at the Amsterdam Arena as they seek a place in Russia 2018 world title. France head coach Didier Deschamps insists his France side will not cautiously aim for a draw as they travel to play Netherlands in World Cup qualifying. The two teams are locked together on four points in a three-way tie at the top of Group A alongside Sweden. Monday’s clash in Amsterdam could be pivotal in the race for the one automatic qualification spot and Deschamps is adamant France are only interested in attacking the game and earning three points. “Concerning the result, when I prepare my team for a match, the first goal is to win,” he told a news conference. “We start the game with the target to give everything to win. Nobody can know how it will happen. If the result is draw, we will take this draw. But I will not start the match by saying that we must not lose. We will play with the intention of winning.” France took on Netherlands in March, winning 3-2 with Dimitri Payet starring after nine months out of the side, and Deschamps has enjoyed the West Ham star’s continued progression since that performance. “I am aware of what Payet is capable of. He did it with his club, but before that game his performances were too irregular with us. I can’t say that I did not expect his important influence in the team. But it’s him, it’s his merit. He has this complementarity with other players. It’s good if he is efficient in every game,” he added. France go into the game on a high following their 4-1 home win over Bulgaria on Friday. In other matches, Beralus will host Luxemburg, Portugal vist Faroe, Andora host Switzerland as Seden battle Bulgaria.

Yaounde Emergency Centre director Dr. Louis Joss Bitang A Mafok said the 40-year-old had suffered a “cerebral hemorrhage”. Cameroon Health Minister Andre Mama Fouda told the press: “Song has departed to Pitie Salpetriere hospital in Paris, where he will continue treatment. I am grateful to the Head of State for instructing the government to take the necessary measures to ensure that Song recovers. “We hail the professionalism of medical doctors in Cameroon and we continue to pray for a safe trip for

Rigobert Song and that he should recover very fast.” On Tuesday, Dr Mafok said Song had “come out of his coma and the oxygen has been disconnected”. He added: “His high blood pressure has returned to normal and the cerebral haemorrhage has been controlled”. But on Friday, word started to spread on social media that Song had died. It appears to have been started by a report on the website African News Today, which claimed he had passed away in France after suffering a stroke. The site even quoted his ‘brother’ Alex Song as saying “Our beloved passed on this morning. At this moment the family is bereaved.” Of course, Alex Song, the former Arsenal, Barcelona and West Ham midfielder, is not Rigobert’s brother, but his nephew. Song, capped 137 times, played in four World Cup finals and a record eight African Nations Cups as well as winning Olympic gold in 2000. No other outlet reported the news and now African sports journalist Gary Al-Smith, who has worked for the BBC and CNN among others, reported this morning that Song is NOT dead and was even able to speak.

Wales disadvantaged in World Cup spree E

uropeans championship semi- finalist Wales suffered a setback in their World Cup qualifying spree after they were held to a 1-1 draw by low placed Georgia at Cardiff city Stadium on Sunday. Gareth Bale, scoring his 25th goal for Wales, gave his team the lead after scoring ten minutes in to the match. But Georgia fought back strongly to earn its first point in the group D qualifying match as an unmarked Tornike Okriashvili equalised late in the second half. Wales are now third in Group D following wins for Serbia and Republic of Ireland. Although the European Championship semi-finalists remain unbeaten after their first three fixtures of this campaign, these dropped points could prove costly in their bid to qualify for a first World Cup since 1958. Despite languishing 127 places below Wales in the world rankings, Georgia had demonstrated their ability to frustrate loftier opponents with a battling display in their defeat by the Republic of Ireland on Thursday. They also had a strong record against Wales, winning all three of their previous encounters, including a 5-0 thrashing in 1994 which Coleman described as his “lowest moment” in a Wales shirt. Having initially set up to contain Wales, Georgia grew in confidence as the match wore on and sensed an opportunity to claim a notable scalp.

Wales looked tired as they tried in vain to salvage victory, lacking inspiration in midfield in the absence of Allen and Ramsey and demonstrating vulnerability in defence which may have been exploited more ruthlessly by stronger opposition. While Wales were underwhelming, their opponents richly deserved their point as they avoided defeat away from home in a competitive match for just the second time since 2012. Having claimed a creditable draw away against Group D’s second seeds Austria three days earlier, Wales entered this match as clear favourites as they sought to strengthen their hold on top spot. And despite being without injured midfielders Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey, Wales seized early control of the encounter as they stretched Georgia with quick and incisive passing. From that point, however, the intensity and pace of the match diminished as Wales seemed content to rest on their one-goal lead. They became ponderous in possession and sloppy in defence, and they were punished when Okriashvili found space in the Welsh penalty area to head in and silence a dumbfounded Cardiff City Stadium. Despite using all three substitutions and hurling bodies forward, Wales were ragged at both ends of the field and were fortunate not to suffer the ignominy of a home defeat against Group D’s bottom seeds.
