Happy Mwende thanks Electronics giant for new limbs
It was all excitement Monday for the family of Jackline Mwende at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport when she arrived from South Korea after an operation in which she was fitted with prosthetic limbs. Mwende who walked out of Terminal 2 to a heroic reception by her parents thanked LG Electronics, the company that spent more than Sh3 million on her medication. “I’m extremely happy that I can now do a few things. I am very grateful to them” a visibly excited Mwende said while holding a bouquet of flowers she had received. The electric limbs will take a few months to adjust with her body according to her doctor Michael Maru. “But we can say she got her independence back with the limbs,” Dr Maru stated. She may not be able to undertake manual jobs but the doctor says she will eventually be able to feed herself and carry light things.

Mudavadi’s Amani reap big as leaders quit Jubilee Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC) has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of current defections as some 90 elected leaders ditched the newly formed Jubilee party. At least three governors, two senators, seven MPs and more than 80 ward representatives have notified the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u that they are quitting Jubilee. The newly launched outfit is the vehicle President Uhuru Kenyatta plans to use in his re-election bid next year. At least 11 political parties dissolved to join Jubilee in a move that has left those opposed to the party shopping for other political outfits. Among them are Governors Isaac Ruto (Bomet), Issa Timamy (Lamu) and Peter Munya of Meru who have all criticized the party merger. Mr Timamy along with his deputy Eric Mugo who were elected on a UDF ticket have now decamped to ANC after their former party was dissolved and merged into Jubilee. Also joining ANC from UDF are MPs Alfred Agoi (Sabatia), Ayub Savula (Lugari), Alfred Sambu (Webuye), Yusuf Chanzu (Vihiga) and John Bunyasi (Nambale).
It is worth noting that the leaders were elected on UDF tickets with Musalia Mudavadi then as the presidential candidate of the party. Mr Mudavadi later fell out with the party leaders and ditched it to form his own ANC. Some 55 MCAs, many of whom come from the western region, have also decamped to ANC. The move has re-energised the party ahead of 2017 according to its secretary-general Godfrey Otsosi. “It is politically significant that ANC is the major beneficiary of new political and legal developments,” he said Mr Osotsi explained that following the development, ANC became the most popular party in Vihiga County Assembly and minority party in Lamu, Kakamega, Nandi and Meru counties. “We also have Migori, Bungoma and Wajir as some of the counties where over 60 MCAs defected to our party. This is a show of the confidence Kenyans have in the party,” he disclosed. Mr Osotsi said a number of elected leaders had by Friday, in addition to those who defeated last week duly filed the relevant documents with Registrar of Political Parties to voluntarily join ANC. “I also want to confirm that the party
Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi.
has also received numerous written expressions of interest by elected leaders within Cord and Jubilee to defend their seats in 2017 elections on ANC ticket.” he said. The secretary General noted that the Registrar of Political Parties had acknowledged the changes by writing to all the leaders and will in due course gazette the names. On the other hand, Chama Cha Mashinani party, Kanu and ODM also won a fair share of MCAs. ODM gained its biggest number of MCAs from Western, while Kanu received leaders in the North Rift, especially from Baringo County. The defections were occasioned by the merger of 10 parties into Jubilee Party, a political outfit that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto will use to seek his re-election in next year’s polls. Following the merger, those who did not wish to join Jubilee Party were given 30 days to decide which political vehicle they would use. Vihiga senator George Khaniri and Kakamega’s Bony Khalwale are the other leaders who have notified the registrar of their intentions to defend their seats on a different party. @hillary_x254 PHOTO: Courtesy

From Page 1 LG Electronics Marketing General Manager Moses Marji said besides taking care of her medical expenses, the company will also give her a generator to charge her limbs. “We want Mwende empowered,” he said. “Every night she can remove the limbs and charge them. She will directly attach the limbs to the generator and charge them.” The Machakos County Government had also promised to pay her Sh30,000 per month for one year. He father Samuel Munyoki on his part says his daughter will not have to depend on anyone,” at least to undertake her basic duties.” “I want her to resume her work once she’s fully used to the limbs. Mwende, who says she has since forgiven her husband who’s currently in police custody, says she now want to move on with her life. About the fate of her husband, she says,” the government will do what they want with him. I’m done with him. ” It is a case that attracted a lot of condemnation from Kenyans and right groups, who described it as the epitome of gender based violence. Her narrative has however been challenged, with reports that someone else could have attacked her but Mwende insist,” it is my husband who did this to me. I saw him. ”
The 27-year-old Mwende was discharged on Friday after being trained to use the myoelectric prostheses which will enable her perform much of the tasks just like her own limbs according to her Doctor Maru. Her husband is facing charges of the assault
even though there were claims that he may not have been involved in the attack since he was away at the time. The attack occurred in late July at her home. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Charter for women’s land rights unveiled
Lands Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi, National Land Commission chairman Mohamed Swazuri and Lands and Phyisical Planning Principal Secretary Mariamu el Maawy pose for a photo with participants during the launch of Women Land Charter at a Nairobi hotel today.
State asked to starve wasteful counties and agencies State departments, county governments and independent commissions that will be found culpable of misuse and wastage of public resources should suffer budget cuts as sign of punishment, a taskforce has recommended. The team formed in 2014 to assess the implications of the new constitution has also proposed the reduction of MPs salaries in a bid to curb the country’s wage bill. In their socio-economic audit report handed over to MPs yesterday, the taskforce which was chaired by the Auditor general Edward Ouko says both the national government and the counties continue to oversee massive loss of public funds through corruption and flawed procurement procedures. As such, they want the particular counties and state agencies punished to deter the trend. For instance, audited report of the 2014/2015 financial year pointed out that state agencies and ministries had lost a whooping Sh14.4 billion through graft. “There is a lot of waste by both national and county governments, demonstrated by an unprecedented increase in unsupported expenditures in both levels,” the report says. It went on: “Corruption and wastage of funds documented in reports by various oversight institutions are issues that must be addressed for devolution to deliver the best results.” The document tabled yesterday
in the National Assembly by the Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee Mutava Musyimi, suggested that national and county governments do not undertake a value for ‘money analysis’ before engaging in any project requiring public expenditure. Independent commissions like Independent Boundaries Electoral Commission (IEBC) and the National Irrigation Board (NIB) were found to engage in flawed procurement procedures that costs taxpayers billions of cash. The audit report prepared by the eight-member working group recommended a number of measures among them reduction of the amount of money the country is spending on remuneration, even as public coffers seep from corruption arising for poor accountability systems. “To curb rampant looting at the counties, the Controller of Budget should sanction withdrawals only after ensuring they are meant for “mandated functions”,” it proposes. “Devolution is not expensive; neither is the number of counties too high to maintain. Some of the concerns about expensive nature of devolution are tied to lack of prudence in use of public resources,” the team revealed. The audit report also noted that the two levels of government have not been effective in enhancing regional and ethnic diversity in recruitments to public offices which has in return affected the extent to
which national cohesion and unity can be achieved. The report by Edward Ouko led team also found that the percentage growth of the public wage bill has been rising dramatically — by 15.42 per cent in 2012 and by 16.75 per cent in 2013. “Between 2012 and 2014, the economy grew by an average of 5.2 per cent. The public wage bill, therefore, grew at a faster rate than the economy,” the report says.
Parents or guardians who fail to take their children to school risk being jailed for a period not exceeding two years or fined Sh10000 or both, if a bill passed by Parliament yesterday becomes law. The County Early Childhood Education Bill 2014 seeks to provide a framework for the establishment of systems for the administration of early childhood education across all the 47 counties. The aim is to reinforce the right of a child to free and compulsory education in public education centres as enshrined in the constitution. If assented to law by President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Bill will make it mandatory for every parent and guardian to take their kids to basic schools failure to which it attracts the state wrath. “Any parent who without a reasonable cause …fails to comply with law shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding ten thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years or both,” the Bill states. “Where a child fails to attend an education centre, the principal shall in collaboration with the village administrator, cause an investigation of the circumstances of the child absence from school,” the state sponsored bill adds. The legislation which was unanimously endorsed my MPs after the senate had approved the same bill, requires, each county government to be responsible for the overall governance and management of early childhood education within the respective county. Igembe Central MP Cyprian Kubai said it will lay the foundation for education for Kenyan children to enable them cope with the requirements of their subsequent lives.
“It is the duty of the county governments to ensure that our children have proper ECDE centres. They should construct classrooms in every school. They should also train early childhood education teachers properly,” Kubai said. His sentiments were shared by Isiolo Women Representative Tiyah Galgalo who backed ECDE centres to provide the stage to correct some ills that are persisting in the society today. On his part, Minority Leader Francis Nyenze regretted that many parents leave their children who have attained that age at home as they go to work but said Once ECDE is made compulsory, it will be very good and convenient for parents because they will take their children who have attained that age to the ECDE institutions. According to the bill, devolved units shall be responsible for the remuneration of the early childhood education teachers in public education centres within the county. “An education centre shall not employ an early childhood education teacher or care give unless…he/she holds a diploma in ECDE from a recognised institution,” it reckons. However, it prohibits any basic public education centre to charge or cause any parent or guardian to pay tuition fee for or on behalf of any pupil in the education centre. “A person shall not charge or collect any fee for the purpose of admitting a child into any public education centre,” bill cautions. According to the bill, the each child shall be given appropriate incentives to learn and complete early childhood education. @hillary_x254

NEWSBRIEFS
At least 1.3 million Kenyans are facing starvation, state admits At least 1.3 million Kenyans are facing starvation as drought continues to ravage different parts of the country. Residents of Kilifi, Kwale and Tana River counties are the worst affected, with the misfortune blamed on a long dry spell experienced throughout the year. According to Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri the number of those affected have declined compared to last year in the same period. More than 2.5 million people were affected last year. To address the challenge, Kiunjuri said that the government has constituted an inter-ministerial joint team to determine and put in the necessary response. The country is experiencing drought due to poor rain performance with 1.3 million civilians affected. However, the numbers have declined,” CS Kiunjuri revealed. He added: “We have a joint team from the relevant ministries and affected county governments to identify and scale up our response to address all emerging issues.” He made the revelations in his office during a joint briefing with his National Treasury counterpart Henry Rotich. He has said that both levels of government have put interventions by providing relief food, cash transfers and water to the victims. Other counties affected include Garrisa, Mandera, Isiolo, Marsabit, Makueni, Kitui and Samburu. CS Rotich said his ministry had released close to Sh 250 million to the affected counties in the last four months. “Since August we have released close to Ksh 250 million to the state department of Special Programmes for emergencies,”Mr Rotich said. The National Drought Management Authority has released an additional Sh54 million to support intervention gaps in livestock, education, water, health and conflict management. The authority noted that it has mobilized 20 extra water bowsers for emergency water supply.
Uhuru apologises to Makonde, orders they get citizenship
President Uhuru Kenyatta Thursday issued a directive that all eligible Makonde people should be issued with national Identity Cards by December. The President, who also hosted a delegation of 300 members of the community, who trekked from Kwale County, at State House, Nairobi apologized to them. “I seek your apology on behalf of other Kenyans because Kenya has taken too long to consider you as our brothers and sisters,” said the President as he assured the delegation “that today will be the last day that anyone will say the Makonde are not part of this nation.” The President further ordered responsible Government departments to ensure the members of the community are issued with title deeds for land they own. The Makonde community lives in Kwale County but was originally from Mozambique and have for decades been kept without citizenship. President Kenyatta told the delegation that the issue had been brought to his attention by the Governor of Kwale, Salim Mvurya, and that the Government has been working to resolve the matter. Earlier in the day, President Kenyatta chaired a Cabinet meeting, which among other issues, adopted a directive to start the process of giving citizenship to the Makonde. During the meeting with the Makonde, President Kenyatta said he will visit Mombasa in December and by that time he wants the process of their registration completed. Deputy President William Ruto said it was regrettable that the Makonde have never been recognised as Kenyans up to this time, adding that the problems they have been facing has been solved now. The meeting was also addressed by Cabinet Secretary for Interior Maj Gen (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery and the Director of Immigration Maj Gen (Rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa. Mzee Thomas Nguli, one of the representatives of the community who spoke at the meeting, said the Makonde have for decades sought help from Government to be recognised as Kenyans given the fact that they were brought to the country in 1940s. He said getting jobs, owning land and even educating their children has been difficult.
President Uhuru Kenyatt shakes hands with members of the makonde community during his meeting with them at State House Nairobi last evening. PHOTO: PSCU
He said that they were happy that the President had invited them to State House so that they can tell him firsthand the problems they have been facing. “We have never thought that one day we will be hosted at State House,” Mzee Nguli said. The Makonde’s spent the better part of the day walking along major streets of the City accompanied by human rights defenders, among them Kenya Human Rights Commission Director George Kegoro protesting their decade state of being without citizenship. “It is a great injustice for people to live in this country without being given Identity Cards,” Kegoro said. Kegoro had accused the government for systematic discrimination of the over 10,000 stateless people contrary to the Kenya Citizenship and Membership Act a state that has now been reversed. The community were recruited by the British colonial authorities from Northern Mozambique in 1947 to work in sisal farms and sugar plantations in the counties of Kwale, Kilifi and Taita Taveta. When Kenya
attained independence in 1963, the Makonde were not identified as one of the 42 tribes of Kenya. Asians and Arabs who held British citizenship were however given a two year grace period to either register as Kenyan citizens or take up British citizenship. This provision left out other migrant communities who had been living in Kenya before 1963 and who consequently became stateless. After promulgation of the new Constitution in 2010, the new Citizenship and Immigration Act No. 12 of 2011, which was enacted, had a provision for issuance of citizenship to stateless persons. This was valid for five years but the Cabinet Secretary could extend it for three more years. However, the Makonde have been unable to take advantage of the new law. Their failure to apply for citizenship can be attributed to lack of necessary supporting documents. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke
Nigeria’s President Buhari warned by first lady
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari (left) acknowledging cheers with his wife Aisha Buhari (right) during his inauguration in Abuja, Nigeria 29 May 2015. The First Lady has warned the president saying she may not support her re-election. PHOT: DEJI YAKE/EPA
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government. In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president “does not know” most of the top officials he has appointed. She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a “few people” were behind presidential appointments. Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government. His wife’s decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it shows the level of discontent with the president’s leadership, says the BBC’s Naziru Mikailu in the capital, Abuja. The president famously remarked at his inauguration that he “belongs to nobody and belongs to everybody”. In the interview
with Naziru Mikailu, Mrs Buhari said: “The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years.” She said people who did not share the vision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were now appointed to top posts because of the influence a “few people” wield. “Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.” Asked to name those who had hijacked the government, she refused, saying: “You will know them if you watch television.” On whether the president was in charge, she said: “That is left for the people to decide.” Mrs Buhari said her husband had
not told her whether he would contest the 2019 election. “He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.” Asked what she regarded as the government’s major achievement, she said it was to improve security in the north-east where militant Islamist group Boko Haram has waged an insurgency since 2009. “No-one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes. Thankfully everyone can walk around freely, go to places of worship, etc. Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools,” Mrs Buhari said, referring to the city which was once the headquarters of the militant group.

Groping claims ‘absolutely false’, says Donald Trump WEEKEND EDITION, OCTOBER 14-16, 2016
Thais mourn death of revered King Adulyadej
The people of Thailand are mourning the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, who died on Thursday aged 88. An emotional crowd held a late-night vigil in Bangkok, and black-clad crowds are now lining the streets. The king’s body will be taken to the city’s Emerald Temple later on Friday. The official mourning will last a year. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn is expected be the new monarch, but has asked for a delay in succession. The prince has said he will not formally take the crown immediately as he needs time to mourn his father’s death. The cabinet has declared Friday a government holiday, and flags are to fly at half-mast for the next 30 days. The government has also asked for people to wear black, and avoid “joyful events” during this period. News websites have turned their pages black and white, while tributes have been paid by leaders around the world. Thousands of mourners were filling the streets of Bangkok early today to await the king’s funeral procession. His body was to be moved from Siriraj Hospital to the Grand Palace today afternoon. The Crown Prince will conduct the bathing ceremony of the king’s body - a traditional Thai Buddhist funeral rite - on Friday evening, said palace officials.
Donald Trump has rejected a slew of accusations of sexual misconduct, telling supporters in Florida they are “totally and absolutely false”. The Republican presidential nominee said the women making the allegations were “horrible liars” and the media was colluding with rival Hillary Clinton. Several women say he groped them or forcibly kissed them. First Lady Michelle Obama earlier said Mr Trump’s boasts about groping women were “shocking and demeaning”. “Leaders should meet a basic standard of human decency,” she said during a campaign appearance in New Hampshire. Seeing Mr Trump make lewd comments about women, on a video leaked last week to the Washington Post, “has shaken me to my core in a way that I cannot have predicted,” Mrs Obama said, her voice cracking with emotion. She never mentioned the former reality TV star by name but her references made her target obvious. Two women told the New York Times that the Republican presidential candidate groped or kissed them. A People magazine reporter also said she was forcibly kissed, while another woman said Mr Trump grabbed her bottom. Making his first public appearance since

the allegations were made, Mr Trump told a rally in West Palm Beach these stories were “a conspiracy against the American people” by the political and media establishment. He said he had evidence the accusations were unfounded and would release that at the “appropriate time”.
In one reference, he appeared to imply People writer Natasha Stoynoff could not have been telling the truth because of her appearance. “Take a look. You take a look. Look at her, look at her words, you tell me what you think. I don’t think so, I don’t think so.” The media, he said, “will seek to destroy your career and your family”. He has threatened to sue the New York Times, which published accusations from two women on Wednesday evening. The newspaper has responded by saying it would welcome the opportunity to make its case in court. Asked during last Sunday’s televised presidential debate whether he had kissed or groped women without their consent, Mr Trump said: “No, I have not”, and stressed that he respected women. Many of the women said Mr Trump’s denial during the second presidential debate prompted them to come forward. Last week’s emergence of a video tape in which Mr Trump boasted that his fame meant he could “do anything” to women has sparked a crisis that has engulfed his campaign. Dozens of Republicans have said they can no longer back him and he has fallen further behind Mrs Clinton in national and state polls.

National Bank announces Sh2bn move targeting 17 millon SMEs National Bank of Kenya has launched a Sh2 billion Small Enterprise Banking Unit, a move that will see the bank lure close to 17 million Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) into its banking bracket. The drive is part of the Kenya Bankers Association’s Inuka Programme and seeks to accelerate the lender’s balance sheet growth while catering for the financial inclusivity requirements of small enterprises. National Bank Managing Director & CEO Wilfred Musau said the Small Enterprise Banking Unit seeks to empower the unbanked majority of low-end Kenyans who are in business. “We want to instill confidence in small enterprises who, with proper access to financial services, can boost job creation, increase households’ income and increase investments in human capital,” said Mr. Musau. The new unit will target both the personal businesses and investment groups in the Retail Convectional and Amanah Business Segments. Over the past three years, National Bank has embarked on an aggressive drive to diversify its deposit and loan concentrations by tapping into the small and medium enterprise segment. Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reveal that there are more than 17 million Small Enterprises registered in Kenya, with 98 per cent of them contributing to 25 per cent of the country’s GDP and employing up to 50 per cent of the workforce. The lender was ranked the first financial

Government calls on KQ to overhaul services, urges pilots to halt strike Kenya Airways (KQ) should overhaul all its services, including its pricing, in a bid to be competitive in the market, the government has advised. The move is intended to revive the loss making airline that is facing significant challenges. The government has also called on KQ’s pilots to halt a strike scheduled for Tuesday next week. A Cabinet meeting presided by President Uhuru Kenyatta has also approved the “Fly Kenya Policy” aimed at ensuring that all Government officials fly via Kenya-registered carriers when travelling on official duty and whenever public funds are expended. KQ is currently facing an impending strike by members of the Kenya Airlines Pilots Association (KALPA). The Association on Tuesday issued a seven day strike notice demanding an overhaul of the Kenya Airways (KQ) management.
KALPA Secretary General Captain Paul Gichinga told a media briefing that they want Board Chairman Dennis Awori and CEO Mbuvi Ngunze to resign, arguing that they have no confidence in their ongoing turnaround strategy. Gichinga says if the two will not quit, the pilots will down their tools on Tuesday next week, starting 5am until a comprehensive solution is found. On their part KQ says the planned strike by KAPLA is unjustified and uncalled for as it will result in more losses to the airline. In a press statement, the airline indicated that that the threat is already costing Kenya Airways significant losses as passengers have begun to make cancellations immediately the action was published. The firm indicated that if the association does not forthwith retract its statement, Kenya Airways will have
to immediately stop selling tickets on its network, given the costs associated with selling tickets and not carrying these passengers. The airline explained that in addition, it risked losing critical support of financiers and suppliers that Kenya Airways is in negotiations with. The government has since demanded the immediate withdrawal of the strike notice adding that the state will use all its levels available to take action against those who defy the directive. A statement from Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia indicate that KALPA did not follow the due process in calling for the strike as it did not engage either KQ nor the shareholders prior to the notice. “The government with other shareholders are confident that the company is on a turnaround and are supportive of the initiatives in this strategy,” Macharia added.

DigiPay is available for use by mobile network operators, banks and other financial institutions, subscription-based service providers, international remittance companies, among other providers. Transactions via DigiPay are fast and secure and can be done via mobile devices or web-based portals. “We are delighted to launch a service that will unlock access to finance and foster economic growth in Africa. Thousands to benefit from Sh10bn Wadi Degla project
Thousands of Kenyans are set to secure employment opportunities as Wadi Degla Holding, an Egyptian investment firm plans to open five new clubs in Nairobi at a cost of Sh10 billion within the next three years. Wadi Degla Clubs Kenya Manager Joseph Reda said the move would scale up revenue for the country as the firm looks at opening more clubs in Migaa and Karen and is still looking for other places in Nairobi to set up two more establishments. He says the move is necessitated by the country’s growing middle class that has sophisticated needs. He noted that the firm will target regional markets including Uganda and Rwanda in the next few years. Speaking during the official launch of the Wadi Degla Runda Club, Reda stated that the Club resonates with the new lifestyle of Kenyans who are now seeking an exclusive leisure experience
and a private members’ club for the whole family. “The club provides a one-stop shop for families looking to engage in different activities be it swimming, wining and dining and even business,” he explained. The club, which is a Sh2 billion investment, situated on a 10 acre piece of land, has a sporting ground carpeted with artificial grass, as well as a carpeted children’s play area. The club also has fine dining restaurant, a rooftop bar, several eateries, a spa and what Reda termed as “Kenya’s most sophisticated Gym.”“We have partnered with sports academies to help children develop their talents into professional careers. Children can be enrolled in the Arsenal Soccer School while those who want to be athletes will be trained by former marathon champion Douglas Wakihuri,” he added. @ enock_x254

Kenya ranked among top 3 nations in SSA for facilitating access to credit WEEKEND EDITION, OCTOBER 14-16, 2016
Kenya now ranks among the top three nations in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of access to credit, the latest report from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has revealed. In an analysis dubbed ‘Economic Insight: Africa Q3 2015’, launched today, the accountancy and finance body points out that only Rwanda and Zambia top Kenya for ease of credit financing. The report, commissioned by ICAEW and produced by partner and forecaster Oxford Economics, provides a snapshot of the region’s economic performance focusing specifically on Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Angola. “Access to finance is a vital driver of economic growth, so this is great news for Kenya. The interest cap enacted in Kenya benefits customers by both keeping the rates regulated, as well as spurring greater competition amongst banks. It could also further incentivise more accurate credit scoring. All of these measures should help Kenyan businesses in the longer term,” said ICAEW Regional Director for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, Michael Armstrong. Drawing on insights from the World Bank’s Doing Business Rankings, the
A man counts his money after withdrawing the cash with his mobile phone at an M-Pesa service outlet in Nairobi. report states that Rwanda performed the best in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of access to credit. In second place was Zambia followed by Kenya, Ghana, Mauritius, Uganda, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe,
Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Angola. Rwanda has made several reforms to facilitate access to credit in the past 6 years thus pushing up its rank. Kenya too has made gains in access to credit by
enacting a law prohibiting banks from lending at rates higher than 4 per cent over the Central Bank Rate. Angola, which came in the bottom of the rankings, has only seen one reform made in the past 6 years regarding
access to credit. Furthermore, despite the country having the third largest banking system in Sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria and South Africa, only a small portion of the population is banked and few business apply for loans. As a whole, Sub-Saharan Africa performed relatively poorly compared to other regions in terms of access to credit with a regional average Distance to Frontier (DTF) score of 35.9. The DTF score captures the gap between an economy’s performance and a measure of the best practice across the entire sample – with 100 being the frontier. The lower the DTF score achieved, the worse the access to credit. The report also shows that East African countries have eased monetary policy over the past year while their West African counterparts tightened it in an effort to slow inflation. It revealed that Kenya enjoys lower borrowing costs compared to Uganda. Based on the numbers, Rwanda and Kenya have maintained strong growth momentum into 2016, recording real GDP growth of 7.3 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) and 5.9 per cent y-o-y in the first quarter of the year respectively; Uganda recorded a relatively disappointing 3.4 per cent y-o-y rate in the same quarter. @ Dennis_x254
KRA intercepts undeclared luxury vehicles at the port Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs officials at the Port of Mombasa have yet again intercepted a container suspected to contain two luxury vehicles, which were not declared by the importer. This interception is the latest in what has been a continuous crackdown on unscrupulous importers. Scanned images of the Container Number MSKUI849826BL957361627 show it was loaded with two Range Rovers that had not been declared in an attempt to evade taxes. The container was also loaded with two other units of vehicles, a Peugeot and a Toyota Corolla, which were duly manifested. The saloon vehicles were loaded at the front of the container in an apparent move to conceal the Range Rovers. The importer also declared that the Container was carrying 600 bicycles but scanned images contradict the number since less than 200 bicycles could be visible. Further, the importer declared another consignment of 200 bales of used clothing, 10 tables and 6 engines, which are not visible in the scanned image. The Authority stated that the container will be subjected to 100 per cent verification as KRA officials and other government agencies launch investigations to find out the reasons why the container has inconsistencies and also to unearth those behind the latest scandal. The Kenya Revenue Authority has tightened the noose on the masterminds of the syndicate involved in evading tax by mis-declaring and under declaring of goods. Efforts by Customs officials to contain the syndicate have, in the recent past, been successful with several vehicles being seized and a number of suspects being charged in Court. @kevin_x254
Demand for luxury vehicles on the rise as GMEA unveils 2017 Chevrolet Trailblazer Leading vehicle manufacturer General Motors East Africa (GMEA) has launched the new Chevrolet Trailblazer 2017 model just as the car maker moves to cash in on the country’s growing demand for luxury vehicles. Speaking at the launch ceremony for the Trailblazer, GMEA Managing Director, Rita Kavashe, said the new vehicle is positioned for the luxury vehicle market segment, which has in the last year grown by 4 per cent. “With rapid urbanization, increasing disposable income in the middle class and infrastructure developments in the last few years, demand for luxury vehicles is increasing in the Kenyan market. The new model is a response to customer feedback and the need to introduce a superior vehicle with exciting new features,” said Rita. A report from the KCB Bank Group reveals that the demand for luxury cars improved significantly in 2015 contributing to an increase in the overall number of cars sold in the Kenyan market. Figures from the Kenya Motor Industry Association show that a total of 19,524 new vehicles were sold last year up from 17,296 vehicles in 2014. The dealer says that the MY2017 Chevrolet Trailblazer “builds on Chevrolet’s legacy of building the world’s first SUV, the Suburban, to produce a stylish vehicle that combines a commanding presence with sporty sophistication.” Rita described the MY2017 Chevrolet Trailblazer as the ultimate SUV for the modern
family and the vehicle of choice for anyone looking for a premium vehicle that meets their lifestyle needs. “From city commuting to off-road trips, our lives revolve around different activities and a variety of experiences. Adventure is more than just the outdoors – it’s also about new experiences within urban settings. And how one arrives is a big deal. The new 2017 Chevrolet
Trailblazer offers just that,” added Rita. “At a time when road safety is a key concern for individuals on the road, the new Chevrolet Trailblazer includes advanced safety features such as Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Panic Brake Assist, Anti Rolling Protection and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System among others,” said Rita. @enock_x254

ith Coke Studio Season 4 premiering on our TVs last week, the big parade of names that the show promotes and produces culminated with the unveiling of international RnB superstar Trey Songz. As he collaborates with our home grown talents, here’s a snippet of what these big stars have lined up for Coke Studio audiences all over the continent.
HOT TOPICS
MAPHORISA: The experience at first was a little hectic. I didn’t know which sound to go for in the beginning, whether it was Afro beat or the like. We started with one beat which we’ll finish up on later. I tried really hard to create a beat that represented all the cultures and genres on the show. So it’s kind of a mixture and so far I can say it was a dope experience and I’m ready for the next part of this journey. Let’s do it! TREY SONGZ: It was difficult for everyone to pry us away from the studio once we started working. I feel like the music we’ve been given is very worldly, it lends itself to us to create the best expression of ourselves. I think the challenge for us would be to embrace and uplift the sounds within one another throughout the experience. It’s easy to say ‘that verse goes first, there’s a chorus here, there’s a bridge there,’ but what I’m interested in is finding a piece of work that sounds holistic, as if we were one. Even though

Stonebwoy today is here, I never see Stonebwoy, he was an enigma, and he’s on my Instagram page but he’s here now. These are relationships that are formed on the show and the rest is history and you guys will be able to witness that. NYASHINSKI: ‘Hatukuenda mita za kati,’ Trey and I didn’t go very far on the matatu ride I took him on because we had been given a set route by Coke Studio. So I just picked him up and dropped him off that was my job. EMTEE: For me the main thing I have learnt from this experience is to never stop. I managed to master that even while I was coming up in Jo’burg. Whether I ate or not on whatever day it might be, I would still be in the studio making a song. Not even knowing if radio was going to accept it or not. I just kept making songs and that’s the main key to success. PHOTO: ANYIKO PR

we have so many different styles I want us to unite through our music. YEMI ALADE: I was asked initially whether I needed to know an artiste very well in order to get into the studio with them but the funny thing about music is that artistes are just vessels with music within us. All we need is a beat, we collide and our star power creates magic. The great alignment of stars that we have been given to work with on Coke Studio is a galaxy and we are ready to shine and share the music. We don’t know the next time we are going to be together as a group and only Coke Studio can do that. VANESSA MDEE: I have gotten the best relationships from Coke Studio. 2 years ago I worked with 2 Baba who is an African legend and I was recently at a celebration in Nigeria with him, these are relationships that can only be formed on this stage. As Yemi said the music does the work I just avail myself as a vessel and we have already created magic.

evin Hart doesn’t believe in fame. The 37-year-old comedian spoke about the illusion of celebrity during a Sirius XM Town Hall in New York City promoting his new film, ‘Kevin Hart: What Now?’ “It’s not like your life changes because of the level of success that you have,” Hart explained to the event’s host, SNL star Kenan Thompson. “At the end of the day people are people.’ Hart also wants fans to look at celebrities as regular human beings. “If you come up to take a picture of me and I’m with my kids, I’m gonna politely tell you, ‘Hey man, I appreciate your support, but I’m on daddy time right now,’” Hart added. “As a person you should understand that.” The father of two, who recently earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, used Britney Spears’ life in the spotlight as an example to prove that “fame is false.”

West Brom’s Pulis praises Pochettino as WEEKEND EDITION, OCTOBER 14-16, 2016
West Brom manager Tony Pulis has heaped praise on his Tottenham counterpart Mauricio Pochettino ahead of their clash in the Premier League tomorrow. The Argentine has guided the Lilywhites to an unbeaten start in the first seven matches, and currently lie second, just a point behind leaders Manchester City whom they beat 2-0 in their last outing. “His teams are well coached. They work up and down the pitch exceptionally well. They’ve got real talent. I’ve been involved in games with Pochettino a few times. He always comes in after for a drink. He’s a good man,” said Pulis. The Baggies remain unbeaten at home since they

lost to Everton on August 20 but Pulis expect a determined Spurs side to push them at The Hawthorns. “Spurs didn’t get over the line last year but that will make them more determined. They’re a good, young side and it’ll be tough,” he said. League action resumes this weekend after the international break and like most managers, Pulis will wait to assess the fitness of players who were engaged with their national sides. “The players are back from internationals. Salomon Rondon came back later than most and we will have to assess some today. There are a lot of South Americans like Salomon who play in Europe. We will have to take a look at him today (Friday),” he said. Pulis is also hoping that Nacer Chadli will impress his old club Tottenham when they meet tomorrow. The Belgian has scored three times since his reported £13m move from White Hart Lane and Pulis says: “Nacer has done well. We’ve been really pleased with him. Not just with how he’s played but the way he’s mixed with the group. Let’s hope he keeps scoring goals.” The match at the Hawthorns is among seven EPL games lined up for Saturday with Champions Leicester City facing off with Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge in an early kick off and Crystal Palace battling out with West ham later in the day. Palace boss Alan Pardew too is worried about the effect of the international ahead of the London derby. “These breaks can work for you and they can work against you. You’ve got literally 48 hours once they return to get them in the zone. We’re a better unit,

we saw that in pre-season. Christian Benteke came into a team that I thought was functioning well,” he told reporters Friday. “Scotty Dann won’t make this game. He’s training, so should be available for the next one. Other than that we’re OK,” he said on his team’s injury concerns adding: “No update on Pape Souare. He’s
on a long recovery time. I still think back-end of November, early December for Loic Remy.” West Ham have struggled so far this season and currently lie in the relegation zone. Pardew believes it is all down to their adventure in the Europa League. “The Europa League is always disruptive. I’ve been

involved in that, it causes logistical issues and it’s difficult to work out. You can lose your way a little and maybe that’s affected West Ham. It’s certainly not a question of the manager or players’ ability. Then there is the switch to the new London Stadium. “Moving to a new stadium can take away years of tradition. Fathers taking their sons to Upton Park etc. Some fans will find it difficult. He has earmarked playmaker Dimitri Payet and winger Antonio as some of the Hammers he expects to cause his team troubles. “Dimitri Payet scored two great goals against us. His goal prior to the international break was phenomenal. He and Michail Antonio have been their highlights so far.” At the Vitality Stadium, Egypt international Ahmed Elmohamady comes back into the Hull squad after missing the Chelsea defeat following his red card at Liverpool. Manager Mike Phelan, who was confirmed as permanent Hull boss yesterday, however said DR Congo forward Dieumerci Mbokani is unavailable for selection this weekend after returning from international duty with an injury. Defender Michael Dawson will play for the development squad tonight and will not feature in the playing squad at Bournemouth. His host Eddie Howe also has his own injury concerns ahead of the clash with a side he said has a ‘siege mentality’. “We were left with 13-14 players and had a
good week with the lads training well. One or two came back with knocks, I won’t name them.” Bournemouth have won two of their first three home league games and Howe adds: “Our home form has been good. As a footballer you should look forward to playing at home in front of your own supporters.” At the Britannia Stadium, Stoke host Sunderland in a clash of two sides which remain winless in the league so far this season. But Stoek boss Mark Hughes believs it is time for his side to get their first win saying his lads are in a very confident mood. “We encouraged supporters with the nature of our performance against West Brom. This is a good opportunity to get maximum points,” He said. The Welshman confirmed that England international Glen Johnson will be out for “three to four weeks” with a thigh injury suffered in training. A part from the Chelsea Leicester clash, the other highlight match of the day will see Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City take on Everton at the Etihad. City were outclassed 2-0 by Spurs in that last league encounter and will seek to steady their ship as they hunt for the Premiership title. Arsenal welcome struggling Swansea at the Emirates in what will be new coach Bob Bradley’s first Premier League game.

Chelsea signs record-breaking 15-year £900m Nike kit deal Chelsea has signed a new kit deal with US sportswear giants Nike, in an agreement which marks the largest commercial deal in the club’s history. Nike will provide the London club’s kit from the 2017-18 season, after the Premier League team said in May it was ending its Adidas deal six years early. The deal is reported to be worth £60m a season for the next 15 years, but the club did not confirm any cash figures. Chelsea said it was an “incredibly exciting and important deal” for it. Nike will produce strips for the first team, academy and ladies teams, as well as replica kit and clothing for the club’s fans. Like most large Premier League clubs Chelsea is

looking to expand its fan, and commercial, base into areas such as East and South East Asia, and also North America. Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “We believe Nike will be able to support our growth into new markets as well as helping us maintain our place among the world’s elite football clubs.” The Stamford Bridge club’s deal with Nike is believed to be worth double its previous deal with Germany’s Adidas, which was worth £30m a season. Rivals Manchester United’s have the most valuable Premier League kit deal, which it signed with Adidas in July 2014 and is worth £750m over 10 years.

Italian managers Claudio Ranieri (Leicester) and Antonio Conte (Chelsea) react during past league matches. They clash tommorrow at Stamford Bridge. PHOTOs: EPA
Battle of the Italians in Chelsea vs Leicester
Chelsea host Champions Leicester City tomorrow at Stamford Bridge in what promises to be a big battle pitying Italian managers. Claudio Ranieri takes his charges to his former club at Stamford Bridge to face off with fellow Italian Antonio Conte who took over the reins at the Blues following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last season. These two coaches last met in 2012 in the Serie A when defeat for Inter Milan against Juventus saw Ranieri sacked the following day. But sack fears are nowhere tomorrow when the Italian returns to Stamford Bridge where they were given a guard of honour for the Champions in May following Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham two weeks before that effectively confirmed Leicester City as Champions. Tomorrow’s meeting is Ranieri’s third Premier League game against Chelsea, with each of those meetings coming against a different manager (Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Antonio Conte). Should they lose, the Foxes could become the first reigning top-flight champions to lose their opening four away games of the season since Blackburn in 1995-96 having lost at Hull City on the opening day, Liverpool and at Manchester United. Pundits believe Conte, whom Ranieri tried to sign as a player in Italy could increase his concerns away from home. Ranieri has said he could rotate his starting line
up tomorrow. “We played seven matches in 22 days. I have to rotate a little more my players. I will wait until after training [on Friday]. The last match at Chelsea was special with the guard of honour, but Saturday is an important match and we must react,” he said on Thursday. Chelsea could recall captain John Terry, who is back in training after an ankle injury, but Willian will not play after being given compassionate leave following the death of his mother. The Blues will monitor Victor Moses, who missed international duty with Nigeria because of a muscle problem. Leicester are hopeful midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who was not available for England’s recent matches because of a minor groin injury, will be fit although Nampalys Mendy will not feature because of an ankle injury. The Blues are vying to avoid back-to-back home league defeats against a side they have failed to beat in either of their meetings last season. But Leicester have an even inferior record with their last win at Stamford Bridge realised in September 2000 when Muzzy Izzet and Stan Collymore scored. Claudio Ranieri attended that match and took over as Blues’ manager the following day. Chelsea will be counting on Diego Costa who is the current top scorer with six goals as the Foxes look forward to new signing Islam Slimani with Jamie Vardy still struggling to rediscover his scoring boots.

Fifa unveils ‘vision for the future’
Football’s crisis-hit world governing body Fifa says it is still working to regain trust as it launches its “vision for the future”. In a new document called ‘Fifa 2.0’ the organisation has outlined its key goals following widespread corruption allegations. President Gianni Infantino said Fifa was building an organisation to “set the standards for others to follow”. Fifa also wants to take over organising the World Cup after Qatar 2022. As it stands, host countries are in charge of running the tournament. “Fifa is a stronger institution today than it was a year ago - and it will be even stronger a year from now,” said secretary-general Fatma Samoura. Dozens of senior officials were indicted by US prosecutors as a result of the Fifa corruption scandal in 2015, which is said to have involved racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering. Former Fifa and Uefa presidents Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini both received eight-year bans from all football-related activities, reduced on appeal to six years, while a Swiss criminal investigation into the pair is also ongoing. Jerome Valcke, the former Fifa secretarygeneral, was also given a 12-year ban from football in February, which was reduced to 10 years on appeal, for his alleged involvement in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets.
