Uhuru downplays Sonko’s ‘acting President’ brag
P
resident Uhuru Kenyatta has today downplayed remarks made by Nairobi senator Mike Sonko to the effect that the latter was left in charge of the country last week. Sonko claimed at a funeral in Machakos County last Friday that he was the ‘acting president’ given President Kenyatta was away in Togo and that his deputy William Ruto was not around. Mr Ruto was already back in the country from France at the time though. Sonko’s remarks prompted Director of Public Prosecutions to order a probe with some lawyers suggesting it was a serious crime that amounted to treason. But while speaking today during a state House Summit on Governance and Accountability, President Kenyatta seemed to downplay the act. “Don’t bother about what people say at funerals, weddings and these other issues. I have only on one occasion left the office of presidency. Whether I am in Togo, I am still the president of the Republic of Kenya,” he said. “I have only left the presidency only once and I signed a piece of paper leaving my deputy to act as President. On any other occasion, wacha media waseme vile wanataka kusema (let the media say whatever they want to say), don’t be bothered about small things my friend,” he said. Sonko has already been grilled over the remarks.

Agencies trade blames over graft war hitches TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18 , 2016
Government institutions were today locked in blame games with each other over their failures to effectively reign in rampant corruption in the country. During the State House summit on Governance and Accountability today, the State Law Office, that of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) all heaped the blames on the judiciary criticizing the courts for deliberately delaying cases on corruption. Attorney Githu Muigai, EACC Chief executive Halakhe Waqo, DPP Keriako Tobiko and DCI boss Ndegwa Muhoro all accused the courts for slowing down the war against graft. Prof Muigai said the weakest point in the fight against corruption is the courts pointing out that out of over 600 cases presented to court only three have been successfully prosecuted. “The weakest link in the fight against corruption is the court. If you have over 600 cases of corruption in court and only three are being prosecuted then that is where the problem is,” Prof Muigai explained. According to Waqo, there are corruption cases in nearly all countries across the world with Kenya being no exception. He said there always exist a high threshold for proof but insisted that it is not easy for them to be dismissed like

has been the case in Kenya where he said the courts have continually dismissed graft cases for lack of evidence. “Corruption cases have very high threshold but the problem we have here is very lenient courts. Sometimes back we arrested a judge with money in his bag but he was let free because of lack of evidence,” Mr Waqo said.
The DPP said any high level corruption case taken to court has been delayed deliberately or there is a stay order for reasons not clearly explained. “We have taken many cases to court with solid evidence but they have been deliberately delayed or you will be told there is a stay order for reasons you don’t understand,” Tobiko said.
But Court of Appeal president Justice Kihara Kariuki quickly jumped to the defence of the Judiciary and instead blamed investigators for doing a shoddy job thereby presenting weak cases in court. “The problem why people see courts as delaying the fight against corruption is because the cases we receive are very
weak as investigations were not done well forcing us to send them back because of lack of evidence, so there is a case of incompetence here on the part of investigators,” Justice Kiharu said. Mr Muhoro however defended his officers from the claims of incompetence and instead asked why murder cases investigated by the same officers are concluded faster by the same courts than corruption cases. “If shoddy investigations is the reason why there is a delay in handling corruption cases faster why is it that murder cases which we also investigate are concluded faster?” he posed. “I wish I could arrest people on social media and take them to court as the public wants but it is not possible. We must investigate and provide solid evidence,” he added. Tobiko urged the public to be patient with agencies tackling corruption cases arguing that due process must take place for a case to be successfully prosecuted. “I have taken to court the highest number of individuals in the history of this country since independence and therefore do not see any reason for resigning over incompetence,” Tobiko said. US ambassador Robert Godec who was also present said those stealing from public coffers should be put behind bars. “At the end of the day, people need to be put to jail,” he said @sam_x254
Officers threatened to shoot me if I didn’t bribe them, lawyer tells MPs Lawyer Patrick Ogola yesterday made a shocking revelation, narrating to MPs how seven officers from the Banking Fraud threatened to shoot him if he did not bribe them in order to be cleared over allegations that he benefited from money stolen from the National Youth Service. Mr Ogola who appeared before the national Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee that is investigating the scandal, said he was arrested late last year and taken to a room at Marshal House where he found the seven officers. The officers did not speak to him for about 30 minutes as they were loudly discussing how they have killed people who have failed to cooperate with them in what he said was aimed at intimidating him. After about half an hour the officers turned to him and asked him to part with the bribe so that they could write him a favorable report over the allegations he was facing. “Wakili (lawyer), we know you don’t have any mistake over this issue but remember we must ‘eat’ and our boss must also get something out of this, so give us something for you to be out of this problem,” he quoted the officers as having told him.
The Lawyer told the committee that the officers bluntly told him that they have shot and killed many people and therefore he would be no exception if he failed to cooperate. But Mr Ogola did not mention the officers by name saying he fears for his security but was ready to disclose to the committee in camera. In particular, he mentioned Corporal Jeremiah Sautet whom said called him and said that he would direct police officers to shoot him if he failed to cooperate. When asked by Suba MP John Mbadi whether he reported the matter to police, Ogola said: “I did not report the matter to police because I would be dealing with police and I was terrified.” “I have never been that terrified in my life, it was one of those dark moments in my life,” he added. Despite the threats and pressure from the investigation officers, Ogola said he refused to part with any bribe saying his conscience did not allow him to do so. “I knew I had not committed any crime and therefore could not act against my conscience,” Ogola said. Ogola is accused of money laundering claims in relation to the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal. His
law firm is alleged to have been used by controversial businessman Ben Gethi to transfer huge sums of money apparently looted from NYS. But he told the committee, led by interim chair and Kipkelion West MP Jackson Rop, that he has never benefited from the NYS money and that the only relation he had with Ben Gethi was of selling a motor vehicle Range Rover model. “Ben Kago a friend and business associate of Ben Gethi approached me that Gethi was involved in a motor vehicle business and was selling a Range Rover at Sh18 million. That’s the only engagement I had with them,” Ogola said. Ogola regretted relating with Gethi saying he has suffered a lot since then as his reputation has been damaged as one of the people who stole money from NYS. “My name has been on the press and all over that I stole from NYS. All my three bank accounts have been frozen and have been harassed by police over an issue I don’t even know. I am a lawyer, an advocate of the High Court with clients and I engage in clean business,” Ogola said. Mbalambala MP Abdikadir Aden said documents revealed that Ogola had

transacted Sh140 million with the said John Kago. But Ogola said that he had only transacted Sh113 million with Kago through Sidian Bank. “You might not have any mistake as an individual but documents in our possession indicate that serious money laundering took place in your bank
accounts,” stated Abdikadir. But Ogola denied engaging in money laundering saying as a lawyer he doesn’t question the source of money from his clients hence might not have been aware that the deposits in his accounts were proceeds from NYS. @sam_x254

MPs to burn midnight oil in Maraga nomination debate Continued from page 1
Duale said the extension from the 14 days allowed by law, would remove the perception that Parliament was a mere rubber-stamp, and allow time to whip members to make the required quorum on Tuesday. Chepkonga is expected to table the committee report and recommendation in the afternoon sitting and give Notice of the Motion for approval. However, as per the Standing Orders, one cannot give notice of a motion and debate it the same day. Tuesday’s sitting will therefore end at 6.30pm as per the day’s order of business and a new session will start at 6:45pm to allow debate on the report and voting. If approved by Parliament, Maraga will be appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta to take over from Willy Mutunga who retired as Chief Justice on June 16. There has been no major opposition to Maraga’s nomination from either side of the political divide. Maraga’s first task, as CJ will be to swear in the selection panel that is to recruit the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners (IEBC). When he appeared before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, Justice Maraga said that he will ensure all Kenyans get equal justice regardless of their religion. While he was being interviewed for the post by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) earlier, Maraga had stated that he would not work on a Saturday because of his religious beliefs. The Appellate Judge also explained that his first priority when he commences his term, will be to eliminate backlog of cases within the Judiciary and streamline the sector by dispensing of cases, which are five years old, as fast as possible. Justice Maraga outlined plans to put in place an ICT system to ensure that the c o u r t process is fast.

AP shoots colleague dead in rising, worrying trend An Administration Police officer has been arrested after shooting his colleague dead in Tigania East. The officer attached to Gambela AP camp shot his colleague three times in the chest using a G3 rifle during the Monday 6pm incident. The motive remains unclear. The incident comes barely a week after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet was presented with an inquiry report on the cause of such shootings by police targeting colleagues. The report that contains numerous recommendations has not been made public. Available statistics show that up to three police officers are shot or killed by their colleagues every month, raising serious concerns in the country. The National Police Service has in the previous incidents lost tens of officers in the hands of their own. On July 14, an officer went on a shooting spree killing seven of his colleagues, including a one from the elite Recce squad in Kapenguria Police Station. The siege in the station started when the attacker, identified as Abdilhakim Maslah opened fire on his fellow officers, leading to a hostage situation. In the initial stage, police suspected the attacker was an Al-Shabaab terrorist who had been arrested earlier. In some cases, police officers have also shot themselves dead. www.capitalfm.co.ke
Governors fight claims of ‘illegally’ funding council
Governors have defended themselves against allegations that they are using county resources to fund the activities of their association, the Council of Governors. Kisii Governor James Ongwae who is the council’s Labour and Social Welfare Chairman refuted the claims yesterday ‘terming them malicious and unsolicited’. Some MPs have previously claimed that over Sh333 million has been contributed annually to the council for the last three years. Documents submitted by the Ministry of Devolution suggested that county governments has been remitting monies to the governors grouping, funds which are not approved by county assemblies, as required by law. The official papers tabled in the Senate in April this year in response to an inquiry showed that remitted funds were used to pay CoG Nairobi headquarters at Delta House and governors’ own liaison offices. But Mr Ongwae said it was regrettable that national government had starved CoG of their lawful allocation, forcing the devolved units to dig deeper to their pockets to finance their activities. Ongwae lamented that since the advent of devolution the National Treasury has denied the council of funds despite the constitution giving the provision for the exchequer to allocate funds to it.
Kisii Governor james Ongwae at a past function.
“We may hide our heads in the sand but we have a problem on how as a council of governors we run day to day of our activities,” Ongwae said. He appealed to senators to mediate and force the exchequer disburse money to the council. Mr Ongwae asked the committee chaired by Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Ny’ong’o to sympathize with the county chiefs for
financing governor’s council using public funds allocated to counties. However, committee members Nyandarua senator Muriuki Karue and Nyamira senator Mongare Bw’okongo questioned why the governors had not sought the intervention of the senate but instead arbitrarily continue to remit funds to the council in total violation of the law. @hillary_x254

Lungu leads Zambia in reconciliation prayers
It’s a holiday today in Zambia so that people can observe national prayer day. On his Facebook page, President Edgar Lungu says the theme this year is “promoting reconciliation, healing and celebrating unity in diversity”. The day comes two months after a closely fought election in which Mr Lungu beat his main rival Hakainde Hichilema, just getting over the 50% threshold to avoid a run-off vote. Mr Hichilema has not accepted the result, but a legal attempt to overturn it failed on a technicality. He has since been arrested and released over organising an illegal gathering. The opposition leader has made no comment about what’s happening today. The president is streaming the one-day prayer event on his Facebook page:
Strike called’ in northern Ethiopian city of Gondar Ethiopian activists in the northern city of Gondar have called for a three-day stay-away, the Ethiopia opposition channel Esat is reporting. The strike started on Monday and Esat reports that schools, businesses and transportation have been paralysed, the BBC’s media monitoring service says. This comes a week after the government declared a state of emergency in the face of a wave of deadly protests. Political activities “likely to cause disturbances, violence, hatred and distrust among the people” are one of the things that have been banned. Correspondents say that several other opposition news services are mentioning the stirke, but a government official told the VOA’s Amharic service that the strike had not been heeded. Exiled Riek Machar vows to return to South Sudan South Sudan’s sacked Vice-President Riek Machar - who fled the country in August - has vowed to return, saying his credibility is intact. Speaking from South Africa, Mr Machar told the BBC that his rebel faction could still negotiate a peace deal with President Salva Kiir. His statement comes despite last week’s heavy fighting in the city of Malakal. Mr Machar, who first fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, is now being treated in Johannesburg. In July, Mr Machar’s bodyguards and President Salva Kiir’s presidential guards fought each other, sparking days of violence. Hundreds of people died and more than 100,000 fled across the border. The fighting erupted less than a year after a peace deal was signed to form a unity government and end the civil war. Speaking to the BBC’s HARDtalk programme, Mr Machar said: “I’m going to return to South Sudan.” “Because President Salva Kiir doesn’t want democratic and transparent and fair elections to be conducted, he attacked us, he has restarted the war. “But I am hoping that wise leaders in the region, and in Africa, and the rest of the world will throw up a political process which will bring about peace again, and the resuscitation of the peace agreement, and the reconstitution of the transitional government of national unity.” Mr
Sacked South Sudan’s first Vice President Riek Machar at a past press conference. he told journalists in South Africa yesterday that he would soon return to his country.
Machar also denied that claims that he was a warmonger, saying that his troops were simply defending themselves against government attacks. President Kiir’s officials accuse Mr Machar’s forces
of starting the attacks. Both sides in the bitter conflict have been accused of perpetrating atrocities, the BBC’s Karen Allen in South Africa reports.

Economists reckon that by next year inflation will be nearing 3%, compared with just 0.6% today, a forecast with which officials at the Bank of England now appear to agree. Those economists tend to talk about “the” rate of inflation, but in reality different households experience different rates of price increases. The basket of goods and services that is used to calculate Britain’s official inflation rate is not representative of most Britons’ consumption choices; since it is based on aggregate consumption of different goods, it can be skewed by the choices of the rich, who consume more than everyone else. www.economist.com

Kenya produces East Africa’s first cider as KBL targets lucrative middle-class market
Kenya has successfully launched the first locally-produced cider in East Africa, a product from Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) that seeks to cash in on the lucrative middle-class millennial market segment. Kenya Breweries Limited’s Managing Director, Jane Karuku says the launch of the product dubbed Tusker Premium Cider is driven the company’s commitment to marketled innovation and the need to expand consumers’ experience within the beverage alcohol market. “Our ambition is to innovate constantly and at scale in order to address changing tastes and preference across a diverse category of consumers in the Kenyan market,” said Ms. Karuku adding that Tusker Cider is the first locally-produced cider in the region, signifying how vibrant Kenya’s market has become in the last decade or so. KBL Marketing and Innovations Director Stephen O’Kelly said Tusker Premium Cider’s innovation is informed by positive socio-economic developments driving growth in the region. “These consumers are increasingly exposed through digital media and are more travelled, discerning and eager to try new products,” said O’Kelly. The innovation is likely to benefit from a rapidly-rising middle class segment of millennials who currently comprise about 35 per cent of the population. @ enock_x254
COMESA extends Kenya’s safeguards Upcoming healthcare, innovation summits to address sustainable development and youth unemployment against cheap sugar imports Kenya has secured an extension of the sugar safeguard from the Common Markets for East and South Africa (COMESA) as the current safeguard granted in 2015 nears its expiration. The move was reached during the ongoing 19th COMESA Summit held in Madagascar where COMESA warned that the upcoming general elections scheduled for August 2017 could affect sugarcane farmers, hindering them from accessing the trade bloc. Deputy President William Ruto, representing the President, lauded the move saying it comes at a time when the country is still unable to compete on equal terms due to inbuilt structural weaknesses such as high fragmented land tenure systems. However, experts have warned of importation of cheap sugar saying it could definitely hurt a majority of sugarcane farmers, especially in the country’s Western region despite
the assurance from the DP that importation of cheaper sweeteners could ensure consumers pay less for the product. While in Antananarivo, the Deputy President will use the opportunity to lobby for the implementation of the COMESA, East Africa Community (EAC) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Tripartite Free Trade Area as well as application by the Federal Republic of Somalia to join COMESA. Data shows that Kenya consumes at least 800,000 tonnes of sugar per year yet it produces just 600,000 tonnes over the same period with imports covering up the deficit of about 200,000 tonnes. The Summit is the supreme organ of the COMESA and guides the regional bloc in implementation of decisions. It will further outline a roadmap for the recruitment of the Secretary General for COMESA and trade and customs issues. @ enock_x254

Kenya was chosen as the venue for the Summit as it has already gained prominence as an innovation hub and is setting the pace for other countries in Sub Saharan Africa. The Innovation Summit is expected to catalyze an exchange of ideas among key players who can direct the course of innovation for economic growth in the region. “Falling prices of natural resources have shown the need for African economies to explore alternative and more sustainable

Government to transform free maternity care programme into NHIF health insurance plan President, Uhuru Kenyatta is set to today officially launch a programme to transform the country’s Free Maternity Care Programme from a direct reimbursement mechanism that pays for number of deliveries reported into a health insurance plan to be administered by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). The Ministry of Health has stated that this ambitious initiative, championed by the national Government in partnership with the county government and other stakeholders is an important action towards achieving universal health coverage as well as lessening financial burdens of low-income earners particularly the rural areas, promotion of equity, social inclusion and reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the country. Kenyatta is to launch the programme at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) in Nairobi. The event is to be attended by the President, Cabinet Secretary,
Ministry of Health, Dr. Cleopa Kilonzo Mailui, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Nicholas Muraguri, Chairman, National Hospital Insurance Fund, Mohamud Ali and Chairlady of Maendeleo ya Wanawake, Rahab Muiu. The Ministry of Health redesigned the Free Maternal Care Programme from direct re-imbursement mechanism that pays for number of deliveries reported, to a health insurance plan to be administered by NHIF in July this year. The Ministry had said that the initiative, which expanded the network of health providers to include faith-based and private providers would be offered in 6,566 health facilities countrywide offering Ante-Natal Care. This was according to Dr. Nicholas Muraguri, the Principal Secretary for Health. He was speaking during a consultative meeting on implementation of Health Insurance subsidy for the poor and free maternity services, in Nairobi on June 26, 2016.
“The benefit package includes both outpatient and inpatient services for the mother and newborn for a period of one year and it will include Antenatal Care, Delivery, Postnatal Care and Emergency referrals for pregnancy related conditions as well as complications,” said the PS. The implementation of the benefit package will be done in two Phases within 2016/17 Financial year to allow time for stakeholder’s engagement, the PS revealed. “This system will improve efficiency, accountability and minimize complains associated with delays in disbursement of free maternity money,” the PS noted. At the time, he added that the Ministry also plans to scale up the Health Insurance Subsidy Programme (HISP) to improve health indicators for the poor and reduce financial burden among the poor households. The PS said the subsidy programme targets 802,000 beneficiaries countrywide to be selected from data of the Social Protection Secretariat (SPS), in the Ministry
of Labor, Social Protection and Services. “The HISP benefit package will cover a number of outpatient, inpatient and chronic care services for two years,” the PS said. The initiative is informed by a pilot programme funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Health, which indicated that HISP was improving lives of selected households. The PS said the free maternity and the health insurance subsidy for the poor will help the country to realize the Sustainable Development Goals 1, 3 and 10 related to poverty, good health/ wellbeing and reduction of inequalities. Maternal mortality has reduced significantly since the abolishment of the maternity fee and introduction of Free Maternal Care Programme in public hospitals by President Kenyatta on June 1, 2013.

Leaders to invest in nutrition initiatives as Kenya reduces cases of stunting by 13pc Nine countries have pledged to make a range of major investments designed to dramatically reduce childhood stunting and equip tens of millions of young children with the abilities they need to succeed in a fast changing world. The pledge comes at a time when the prevalence of childhood stunting in Kenya reduced from 39 per cent to 26 per cent in 2015. This was driven by more than doubling access to health services. In 2000 only 32 per cent of Kenyans who needed an essential health intervention could get it. This had increased to 70 per cent by 2015. The countries, which included Tanzania, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Madagascar, Pakistan and Senegal, made the pledge at a groundbreaking summit at the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings. Their commitments are expected to help create a future economic growth and prosperity. “Poor nutrition, few opportunities for early learning and stimulation, and toxic environments literally hardwire young children to miss out on opportunities to learn and later to earn good wages,” said Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group. “But when Heads of Government and Ministers of Finance commit to fight stunted development and nurture the power of children’s brains, we can avert future crises where people and economies will not reach their full potential.” Speaking for a country where 47 percent of
children under age five are stunted from chronic malnutrition, H.E. Jimmy Morales, President of Guatemala said: “If our children are not healthy and well nourished, they will not be able to go to school and they will not be able to learn well; as adults they will not be able to find good jobs with good earnings so we will not have a productive, safe and secure society. This is why for me, for my government and for my country, the reduction of stunting by 10 percent during my period is the most important priority.” Worldwide, 156 million children under age five suffer from chronic malnutrition, only half of all three- to six-year-olds have access to preschool, and children from the wealthiest families hear as

many as 30 million more words by age three than those from the poorest families. Also, according to a recent report by UNICEF, the number of child refugees has risen 77 percent in 5 years. Further, a Lancet report released yesterday noted that in SubSaharan Africa, 66% of children are estimated to be at risk of poor development due to stunting and poverty, while the share is 65% in South Asia. The situation grows critical as an increasingly digital global economy places a large premium on the ability to reason, learn, communicate and collaborate. However, new evidence shows that brain development during a brief window of opportunity in early life has a profound impact on these abilities both for people and economies. TheWorld Bank Group estimates that countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia would have 9 and 10 percent greater GDP per capita today had they eliminated stunting when today’s workers were children. Recognizing that nutrition, stimulation, and safe environments for young children have a direct bearing on learning, health, behavior, incomes, and national economic development, the Prime Minister of Cote d’Ivoire, and Finance Ministers of Cameroon, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Pakistan, Senegal, and Tanzania pledged strong action at home on a number of fronts to put tens of millions of children on the right track.

Forty per cent of Kenyans are still living in extreme poverty despite a reduction in inequality across the region. The latest data from the World Bank has found that most of the world’s extreme poor live in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. “While over 1 in 10 people live in extreme poverty globally, in SubSaharan Africa, that figure is 4 in 10, representing 389 million people - that’s more poor people than all other regions combined,” said World Bank Data Scientist, Tariq Khokhar. In a statement released just hours ago, Khokhar confirmed that though extreme poverty is on the decline worldwide, there is still a sluggish growth of economies. “Half of the world’s extreme poor live in SubSaharan Africa while a third are in South Asia,” said an earlier report from the institution. In 2015, Kenya was ranked sixth among the top 10 countries in SubSaharan Africa with large populations living in extreme poverty. Currently, an estimated 18 million out of a total population of 46.05 million people in Kenya live under the poverty line, based on a study by the Institute of Security Studies. Other countries with the largest populations of extremely poor people include Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Uganda, Mozambique,

The study reveals that although Kenya and other Sub-Saharan countries like Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal have experienced exponential economic growth, they have failed to translate this growth into poverty reduction. These revelations follow the justconcluded Thirty-Fourth Meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee where South African Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan spoke on behalf of Kenya, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, The State of Eritrea, The Federal Democratic

ast food can’t be accused of being healthy in any way. Although the food option has been present in the country for a long time, the migration of numerous fast food outlets into the capital have made the greasy stuff readily available to many. American pizza chain Pizza Hut recently unveiled its new screwball creation the Triple Treat Box in Nairobi. The box which consists of two medium sized pizzas, a chocolate pizza and chips going for Sh.1500 is definitely one for the books. Leaving aside the calorie count, the meal alone is not one that should be consumed by a single person. But this is not the only monstrosity that American fast food chains have released into the public. Here’s a quick look at some combinations we never though would see the light of day;

creation would have passed as any innocuous item on the menu except for the fact that it is a ‘pseudo-sandwich.’ It consists of cheese, the Colonel’s secret sauce... pinched in between two pieces of Original sandwich that wants customers to consume more calories, clocking in at 540 of pure chicken goodness. Pizza Hut’s Hot Dog Bites pizza but it does. Online reviews all seem to call the pizza iterations of a metaphorical death which is then followed pretzel bread, which does not exactly make things healthier. Krispy Kreme’s Bacon Donut Hot Dog Donuts on their own do not exactly represent a picture of healthy living but adding bacon into the mix is just asking for trouble. Apparently looking to make the most American fast food snack, this creation merges two of America’s favourite food items. It consists of a bacon. Atheists in Kenya have initiated a public online petition seeking to scrap of the word ‘God’ from the Kenyan national anthem claiming that the national anthem that begins; ‘Oh God of all creation’ is not a correct representation and view of all Kenyans who are non-believers and therefore goes against the spirit of the Kenyan constitution. Their argument is that the removal of the word ‘God’ from the anthem will make it all inclusive and promote secularism. ‘Our national anthem must be a source of pride and cultural significance, it must create a sense of allegiance and loyalty to all Kenyans irrespective of their beliefs and should be a reminder of significant national, cultural and patriotic events. We want to feel proud when we sing or listen to our national anthem. This pride must arise from a sense of unity as one country with shared values and ideals. The word ‘God’ disenfranchises atheists from this unified ideal,’ read a statement by the society. The petition is expected to be presented to the Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate in the hope for a review in the spirit of the constitution.

What is
printing
3D printing seems to be all the rage. So what exactly is it and how is it going to inevitably make our lives better? 3D printing also known as ‘additive manufacturing (AM), refers to processes used to synthesize a three-dimensional object in which successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object.’ Basically it is the creation of entire objects, layer by layer, with a computer from a digital file. The first step in the process would be to create the ‘mold.’ Designing the mold is a digital process and is done through a computer programme. The printer is then fed the design and ‘prints’ it through a spool of plastic that forms layer on top of layer by the cooling of the plastic material. The use of plastic is not exclusive though and anything from metal to even food materials can be 3D printed. Art has not been left behind in these advancements with seemingly infinite creations being brought into the mix. 3D printing differs from traditional forms of manufacturing as it is an ‘additive’ form of production and not ‘subtractive.’ In more conventional artistic production processes parts are taken away from a whole like taking away bits while carving, but in this way, since materials are added, less resources are wasted not to mention recycled materials can be used in the creation process. Everything from building materials, prosthetics, jewelry, the cosmetics industry, robotics, sports and the arts have used 3D applications in their workings. The options are literally endless. @chrstine_x254
The solution to this problem is very easy, if you feel like you can move past this place in your relationship then put it behind you but if it’s too much pressure on yourself then leave the relationship before it goes too far. If you hold onto those negative feelings and continue being with her then you will end up resenting her. We all make mistakes and although you did not fully explain the circumstances behind her decision, it wouldn’t be a wild assumption to make that it was not the easiest one to make. If she has changed, turned a new leaf and you believe her then see if you can carry on the relationship, if not let sleeping dogs lie and let her down easy.

@christine_x254
ot all relationships are worth the problems they create. Some relationships are troublesome and attract drama like a magnet, but when it comes to certain situations the source of this trouble might lie within ourselves. Sabotaging a relationship can be a great way to end it, if that is the purpose, but if it is not then it might mean ruining a perfectly healthy relationship for no apparent reason. So how to tell if you are flushing your relationship right down the drain? Here’s what to watch out for; @christine_x254
YOU ARE FOCUSED ON NEGATIVES
You might take out your personal frustrations on your significant other. The little things about your partner that might have been mildly annoying or even quirky before suddenly become incredibly hard to stand. The only way to get past this needless annoyance is to focus on the things that you do like about them. Small things like leaving socks on the bedroom floor or forgetting to take the garbage bag outside should not be enough reason to break up with someone.
YOU ARE NEVER THE ‘WRONG ONE’ DURING FIGHTS
If you inevitably start every fight because of something or other and are the one who is always right or the one being wronged then you might be sabotaging your relationship. You ignore your partner’s feelings or thoughts on an issue in order to come out on top. Having healthy arguments in a healthy relationship can be difficult,
with the added stresses of a relationship in peril this could simply signify the end. Try not to pick fights where there are none and keep the purpose of the fight in mind. What will the argument achieve in the end?
COMPARISON BECOMES THE STANDARD
You tend to compare your current partner with your ex-lovers or even with friends you have no romantic connections to. It’s very detrimental to a relationship when you compare your significant other to other people. It might affect their self-esteem, self-worth and their standing within the relationship. Even talking about your relationship in past tense can be a common occurrence. Move on from the past and realize the person you are with is fine the way they are.
SEX BECOMES A CHORE
Sex is supposed to be a way to connect with your partner but if you feel like it is a favour that you are doing then it might be a symptom of sabotage. Low sex drive can be a sign of many things and many of them tend to be negative and this just happens to be one of them.
you might be sabotaging your relationship Send your agonising queries to christine@x254.co

SportPesa to be new Kenya 7’s kit sponsors as Simiyu takes charge TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2016
Betting company SportPesa will officially takeover the shirt sponsors of the national Rugby Sevens in December replacing former partners Kenya Airways whose contract ends next month, Kenya Rugby Union boss Richard Omwela has said. Omwela said Sportpesa will give them Sh60 million a year and have their logo at the front of the jerseys starting from the season opening series leg in Dubai. The national carriers, whose deal with KRU ends in November, will now seemingly cede ground on a sponsorship deal they have held since 2011 due to their financial tribulations. “We would have loved Kenya Airways to continue because we have had a very good partnership with them. But if you look at the papers every day, their focus is to stay in the air and not to play rugby so we don’t see them coming back on board,” Omwela said. He has however kept it open for them to come back either having their logo at the back or the sleeves of the shirts, as well as possibly taking over the national women’s team, Lionesses. “We have already given that (front) to SportPesa. Probably they can consider the back or the sleeve of the shirt and we are also looking at offering them the women shirt pending SportPesa agreeing. They (SportPesa) have given us some good monetary value as well as taking care of the bonuses,” Omwela added. The betting firm in July unveiled a Sh0.6bn sponsorship to the Union covering the men’s and women’s sevens and 15s teams. They took over the shirt sponsorship of the men’s 15s team during their last

three engagements, the Elgon Cup tie against Uganda Cranes and the two test matches against Hong Kong, all played in Nairobi. “One thing they have really helped us in is the issue of bonuses because they took on to pay all players bonuses. It has been hard for us as a Union to budget because it is not really something you can budget for so them coming on board is a huge relief,”
Omwela said. Meanwhile, Despite lacking much of a coaching experience, KRU is confident Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu will do well as the new Kenya 7s coach after being announced as Benjamin Ayimba’s successor on a two-year contract on Monday. Simiyu, who also captained the Kenya Sevens team from 2006-2008, will take over the team with immediate
effect, less than six weeks before his first assignment at the season-opening Dubai Sevens in December. “Even when Benja (Benjamin Ayimba) took over he was fairly young. It is not a question of age but a question of experience He was an excellent 7s and 15s player and we think he’s got what it takes to deliver on the job,” Omwela said during the unveiling of the new coach. @amos_x254
KPL warns Gor ahead of Mashemeji derby The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) will press disciplinary charges after rowdy Gor Mahia briefly halted proceedings during their Top 8 final against Muhoroni Youth last weekend. This comes even as KPL chief executive Jack Oguda warned the club against similar scenes in this weekend’s clash with arch rivals AFC Leopards. Gor were docked three league points after their fans caused trouble in their first-leg clash with Tusker FC
and should they be found guilty of hooliganism acts again, their slim hopes of a fourth-straight KPL crown could disappear down the drain. They risk being docked six points and a hefty fine if the club if found culpable of occasioning Sunday’s The chaos witnessed on Sunday meant that the trophy was presented to Muhoroni in their dressing room after a primitive climax to the final with the score standing at 1-0 in favour
of the Kisumu based side, thanks to Kennedy Rono’s strike. Oguda says the matter will be treated with all the urgency there is and that is will serve as warning to rowdy fans when Gor Mahia face AFC Leopards in the league match. “As we speak the matter is going through the disciplinary process since that is a case of hooliganism. We are waiting for directions from the IDCC (Independent Disciplinary
and Complaints Commission),” he explained. “Especially with such a big match coming up, there is need to act fast enough and put measures to stop such sad things from occurring again,” he said. Gor currently trail league leaders Tusker by seven points although with a game in hand. @amos_x254
Dortmund seek to steady ship against Lisbon
Borussia Dortmund have travelled to Lisbon earlier than usual to prepare for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Sporting, with the Germans believing their back-to-back matches with the Portuguese could be key to their fate in Group F. Dortmund are currently top of the group on four points, but they are only ahead of Real Madrid on goal difference while Sporting are just a point behind. With a trip to reigning European champions Madrid still to come, Dortmund know their hopes of a top-two finish could well depend on what happens in their two matches against Sporting in the next fortnight. And with that in mind, the Westphalians have broken with tradition and flew out to Lisbon on Sunday evening to give themselves more preparation time for the encounter at the Jose Alvalade stadium. Dortmund’s director of sport, Michael Zorc, said on his club’s website: “This way, we can focus better on recovery (from the weekend) and things are not so hectic when we get over there. “These two games against Lisbon are going to be very significant for the outcome of the group. “It’s about ensuring we are better than them in the head-to-head.” Thomas Tuchel’s men go into the game without a win in three matches, having drawn with Madrid 2-2 at home before picking up just one point from a possible six in Bundesliga fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen and Hertha Berlin. Before that disappointing run, though, Dortmund had won four games on the trot while scoring 20 goals, including a 6-0 away mauling of Legia Warsaw in their Champions League opener. And it is a return to that sort of form that Zorc hopes to see in Lisbon, adding: “We played a good game in Warsaw and won that clearly, and it would be nice if we could deliver a similar performance on Tuesday.” Lukasz Piszczek and Sokratis Papastathopoulos were both on board Sunday’s flight and coach Tuchel will hope to have them back after they missed Friday’s 1-1 draw with Hertha.

Champions League the priority for Leicester, says boss Ranieri TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2016
Defender Alderweireld out as Spurs face Leverkusen
Tottenham will be without central defender Toby Alderweireld for their Champions League trip to Bayern Leverkusen on Tuesday. The Belgian had a scan on Monday after being taken off on a stretcher during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom. “We need to wait for the scan but we believe it’s not a big issue,” said Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino. Right-back Kyle Walker has been rested, while striker Harry Kane remains out with an ankle injury. Alderweireld could be replaced by defensive midfielder Eric Dier, who came off the bench to replace him at centre-back against the Baggies. “The important thing is we trust in him,” said Pochettino. “It’s not important the position he will play - midfield, centre-back or full-back - we believe and trust in him. “We trust him as a person and his skills. For me, Eric is a player who can develop his game in different positions.” Tottenham are second behind Monaco in Group E on three points, while Leverkusen - in third - have two. Tuesday’s game is the first of back-to-back matches against the German club which Pochettino believes will be crucial in deciding how far his side progress. “It’s important, we must win,” said the Spurs boss. “If we want to go to the next round, this is key to take three points from this game and to play at Wembley the same way. “The next two games against Leverkusen for us hold the key to the possibility of going to the next round.”
Leicester City have made the Champions League their priority because they have longer to improve their Premier League form, says manager Claudio Ranieri. The Foxes face FC Copenhagen at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday, having won their first two Group G matches. But the Premier League champions have taken just eight points from the first eight matches in their title defence. “In the Premier League we must be safe at the end of the year. The Champions League is now,” said Ranieri. “At this moment, it’s a priority.” Ranieri’s men beat Club Brugge 3-0 in their opening Champions League match, before edging to a 1-0 victory over Porto. Winger Riyad Mahrez and striker Islam Slimani are set to return to the starting line-up for the first of back-to-back games against FC Copenhagen. Both players were substitutes for Saturday’s game against Chelsea, coming on 67 minutes into the 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. Midfielder Nampalys Mendy remains out after a minor operation on an ankle injury which has kept him out since August. Ranieri said Leicester’s matches against FC Copenhagen are “very important” and “will tell us what we can do in the Champions League”. Leicester have already lost four league matches this season - one more than in the whole of last season.

“We want to improve but it’s normal when we start the season to have something to work on because new players have come and everything is new,” said Ranieri. “Maybe we want to do something more but we are Leicester, we’re a good team and we have to show our qualities. “We are getting better and have to be solid and strong and don’t make any pressure
about relegation.” England striker Jamie Vardy has scored three times in 12 matches for Leicester this season and is without a goal in his past seven appearances for the club. At this stage last season, he had scored 11 goals. “It’s important he stays calm, keeps his strength and he will score a goal,” added Ranieri.

Roanldo eyes goal fest in Warsaw
Cristiano Ronaldo will be seeking to stretch his lead as the Champions League’s top scorer when Real Madrid take on Legia Warsaw in the competition tonight. Ronaldo leads the scoring charts with 95 goals and goes into the clash in imperious form having netted for his national team Portugal during the international break before scoring another for Real in their win over Betis over the weekend. The three times Ballon d’Or winner is closing in on a record 100 career g o a l s in Europe elite club competition. But the hosts are hoping he doesn’t take his current form to the Polish capital. “Hey @Cristiano, congratulations on scoring another goal!” Legia wrote in cheeky tweet last week. “Hope you’re now out of ammo for Legia next week.”

It’s a drab stalemate for the Reds at Anfield
M
anchester United goalkeeper David De Gea made two fine second half saves to deny Liverpool and ensure a goalless and uneventful stalemate on a disappointing night at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool would have drawn level on points with leaders Manchester City with a fifth successive Premier League victory, but were subdued by a classic Jose Mourinho performance of defensive organisation and discipline. United did not allow Liverpool to build the momentum and intensity that has characterised their game this season, while Mourinho’s limited attacking ambitions ensured chances were at a premium. The Portuguese was still grateful for two fine second-half saves from goalkeeper David de Gea, who dived low to stop Emre Can and saved athletically from Philippe Coutinho’s 25yard effort. United’s best chance also came in the second half, but the unmarked Zlatan Ibrahimovic directed Paul Pogba’s cross off target. The visitors had just 35 percent of possession, their lowest in a Premier League match since Opta began recording the data in 2003-04. While this deadlock does little for the ambitions of both teams, there is no doubt who will be the happier manager. This was, in so many respects, the most Mourinho performance of his short time at United. Klopp came on to the pitch at the final whistle to applaud Liverpool’s fans, but there was a tinge of disappointment in his measured tread as he trudged off. “I am not frustrated but I am not happy with the performance. No-one will show this game in 10 or 20 years but we could have played better,” said the German. His side’s promising start to the season has been built on pressing opponents into submission - a high-
pressure style that has brought victories at Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as nine goals in two home wins against Leicester City and Hull City. But Mourinho picked a powerful, athletic side and instructed them to turn the tables on Liverpool’s pressing game. Ander Herrera was at the heart of United’s smothering gameplan, almost operating in the pockets of Coutinho and Roberto Firmino in midfield, while Liverpool were never given a second. They simply could not find a way through. “It was a hectic game, interrupted here and there, but we lost patience with our passing game. The attitude of my team was really good. We were ready to fight but when you can play better, you have to,” he observed before adding: “The kind of defence is difficult to play. The man-marking is really difficult, they are stronger than us. We wasted energy in the first half for nothing. The second half was better and with fresher legs in second half we could have created more.” United held their shape and discipline, much to their manager’s satisfaction, although he still needed those two superb saves from De Gea, and a magnificent saving tackle from Antonio Valencia to stop Firmino as he raced in on goal. It was classic Mourinho, a tactic he has perfected and utilised throughout his career, and Anfield’s increasing anger and frustration will have been music to his ears. “We controlled the game not just tactically but the emotion of the game, that was probably the quietest Anfield I had and I was expecting it to be the other way,” he said. “It is not the result we wanted but it is a positive result. It is a result that stops a direct opponent getting three points at home, so not a bad result.

The game was difficult for both teams but for longer periods it was more difficult for them than us,” he added. While last night’s match was expected to be the perfect stage for £89m Pogba, the Frenchman was once again a peripheral figure. The world’s most expensive player was used in a more advanced role and is certainly on the same wavelength as Ibrahimovic, delivering a perfect cross which the Swede should have converted. In other aspects, though, he operated on the margins of the game and failed to exert the influence expected of a player of his quality and experience. United will expect much more as the season goes on. Anthony Taylor was the man in the middle in every sense after the heat generated by the appointment of the Manchester-based official for a meeting between these two fierce rivals. Mourinho said the appointment made it “difficult” for Taylor, and put him under pressure - comments being investigated by the Football Association - while former referee Keith Hackett even suggested it represented a risk to his and his family’s safety. It certainly increased the scrutiny on Taylor, who felt the wrath of The Kop within minutes - complete with colourful reminders about his place of residence - when he did not book Marcus Rashford for a foul on James Milner. It was to the official’s credit that he did not buckle in the atmosphere, kept discipline without resorting to a rash of yellow cards, and controlled a game that always has explosive potential. United are next in action when they host Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday before returning to Premier League action at Mourinho’s former club Chelsea on Sunday. Liverpool host West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.
