Fireworks at Senate Committee as Munya finally honours call

Differences between Meru Governor Peter Munya and Senator Kiraitu Murungi played out today when the former finally appeared before the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee. Mr Munya had previously declined to honour the summonses by the Anyang’ Nyong’o chaired committee and had missed four previous orders to appear and explain financial queries raised by the Auditor General. And after the senators threatened to order his arrest, Mr Munya finally obeyed. And it was not going to be long before angry senators picked up war with the Meru County chief who also doubles up as the chairman of the Council of Governors. Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi kicked off the storm when he alleged that Munya had belittled the committee following remarks he made over the weekend. The two former allies traded barbs and dismissed each other, with Wamatangi alleging that Munya had injured his character by calling him ‘yule mjamaa mkora wa Kiambu county’ (That crook guy from Kiambu). According to Wamatangi, Mr Munya had belittled him while responding to the sentiments he made while on tour in Meru County last weekend.

ormer Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru ‘interfered’ with investigations into the loss of Sh791 million belonging to the National Youth Service, a suspect in the case has said. Businessman Ben Gethi who appeared before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, said that contrary to reports in the media indicating Ms Waiguru was the whistleblower into the scandal, she was interfering with investigations to sway the outcome of the probe her way. He however denied involvement in the loss of the Sh791 arguing that he started doing business with NYS five years ago.

Waiguru interfered with NYS probe, suspect tells MPs TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4 , 2016

From Page 1

“I started doing business with NYS five years ago with my company Horizon enterprise and I made my money without engaging in corruption,” Gethi told the MPs. He claimed that Ms Waiguru was aware of all the ongoings at the NYS as she was regularly being briefed. Gethi also implicated former senior deputy Director at NYS Adan Harakhe saying he was vouching for another Somali owned firm called Dawood to get majority of oil supply allocation to NYS. Mr Harakhe while appearing before the same committee last week claimed that Gethi and former Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti called him at Nakumatt Junction along Ngong Road where they offered to ‘teach him how to leave in Nairobi.’ He also claimed that the two asked him to approve the payment promising that Gethi had connections at CID and that nothing would happen to him thereafter. “Harakhe lied to this committee that I intimidated him to approve payments yet it is actually him who was vouching for a company owned by a Somali,” Gethi

countered. “I don’t understand how my name was roped into this scandal,” he added. The businessman who has been implicated in the NYS said his company Horizon Enterprise was in 2014 contracted to supply oil and lubricant to NYS and the contract was renewed on account of good services provided. He also told the committee that Ratego Technology, another company that belongs to him, was also contracted to supply food commodities at NYS. “Documents in court show that the alleged stolen funds were lost in the Kibera project under civil infrastructure funds paid to known companies within specific periods of time. I or my companies were not involved in the said project or received the said funds,” Gethi said. He vowed not to allow anyone tarnish his name which he has worked hard to build by becoming a successful businessman. “I wish to reiterate that most of the claims therein seem to be office politics at play amongst individuals. Most of the said accusations amount to nothing more than hearsay and passing of information from

one person to another and finally to the whole of Kenya. There is absolutely no link to corrupt intentions adduced against me whatsoever,” he concluded.

Fireworks at Senate Committee as Munya finally honours call From Page 1

“Mr. Chair, last week I toured Meru County on invitation of area Senator Kiraitu Murungi where I made remarks that those who have refused to honour summons to this committee, will be brought here handcuffed by the Inspector General Joseph Boinett,” Wamatangi said. “But Governor Munya, while responding to me, belittled this committee and further referred to me ‘yule mjamaa mkora Wamatangi from Kiambu,” he added. He alleged that Munya said “those senators don’t look in anything they just make noise.” But Munya quickly dismissed the Kiambu senator and asked him to stop dragging utterances made at political podiums to parliamentary procedures. “I have been a Member of Parliament for 10 years and assistant minister, I understand the house procedures, Wamatangi should not drag those issues here,” Munya told Prof Nyong’o who chairs the committee. “The senator in company of my opponent (Meru senator Kiraitu Murungi) uttered tremendous

words to me and my position as governor I can’t take it kindly,” Munya explained. He told the aggrieved senator to wait and square it out at the political podium if he is interested in Meru politics. But an irate Wamatangi told Munya to prepare for a political face-off ahead of the 2017 general elections. Earlier, Prof John Lunyangapuo (West Pokot), Mongare Bw’Okongo (Nyamira) and nominated Senator Martha Wangare told the senator not to bring matters outside the committee for deliberations on the audit queries. Nevertheless, the committee proceeded to interrogate the governor on the various audit queries among them unprocedural procurement of a medical scheme worth over 35 million to its county employees. The auditor General had questioned why Meru County and the Insurance Company did not enter into a written agreement as required by the Public procurement and Disposal Act 2005. @hillary_x254

The government has dismissed reports of unlawful killings linked to the police. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery castigated the report labelling it biased and a palpable misrepresentation of facts. He was alluding to an investigative piece published on a local daily purporting that the police have killed 122 people in the last eight months alone. The report further claimed that in 2015, more than 140 people died in the hands of police officers with a cumulative of about 250 innocent civilians in the past 20 months. But Nkaissery dismissed the claims and instead alluded to a conspiracy by nonstate actors to undermine the work of the government in securing the country by glorifying criminal acts. “The author of the report appears to be suffering from confusion and a lack of understanding of facts. It is obviously biased. We know who are behind this wild report,” a viciously agitated Nkaissery told journalists outside his Harambee House office in Nairobi today. He was flanked by Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, National Police Service Commssion chairman Johnstone Kavuludi and Interior PS Karanja Kibicho. While dismissing the presence of a special

squad to carry out the killing, he maintained that the use of firearms by law enforcers was clear in the law. He said there was no policy allowing police officers to engage in extra judicial killings and asked members of the public to front such evidence to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) if they suspected such an occurrence. He however acknowledged that there could be a few rogue police officers who overstepped their mandate. “Like any other department, the police harbours a few rogue elements. But a few rascals do not justify condemnation of an

entire service,” said the CS adding that such officers will be prosecuted. According to the CS, 77 per cent of the extra judicial killings submitted to IPOA were found to be baseless. “The report acknowledged that IPOA had received 5784 complaints of police harassments and unlawful killings. On record 4454 of the cases were baseless,” he noted. IPOA reports indicate that out of the 1330 cases found to contain evidence were being investigated, 116 files submitted to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) with another 163 closed by the same office.

NCIC wants vernacular languages banned in public schools, offices

Keep close eyes on county affairs, EACC urges Kenyans The Ethic and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has called on members of the public to keep a close eye on county affairs and whistle blow on corrupt deals. Speaking during the Kenya Leadership and Integrity Forum (KLIF) EACC chief executive Halakhe Waqo said that the gains made through devolution would be lost if public participation was not properly exercised. He urged citizens not to shy away from exposing corrupt dealing in the counties. Mr Wako maintained that despite the challenges facing the commission, his team would not relent in its quest to foster good governance and building a culture of integrity in all public institutions. “All of us as members and citizens of this country have a mandate to whistle-blow on corrupt dealings especially at the county level. No one should shy away or else we will lose the gains achieved through devolution,” Mr Wako said. The forum brought together leaders from various state departments to draft the Kenya Integrity Plan (KIP) 2015- 2019 aimed at strengthening legislation on corruption including the Anti-Corruption Laws (Amendment) Bill 2016, the Whistleblower Bill and the False Claims Bill. Addressing the same forum, Attorney General Githu Muigai observed that the Plan was a reflection of the hopes and aspirations of both the leadership and people of Kenya as espoused in the Constitution and Kenya’s development blue print of Vision 2030. “The objectives of KIP are multi-faceted. We need to combat and reduce the incidences of corruption and unethical conduct as well improve institutional and business ethics for transparency and accountability while seeking to enhance efficiency in service delivery. This must be coupled by strengthening our policy and legal framework,” Prof Muigai stated. @wilson_x254

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has proposed the banning of the use of vernacular language in all public schools and institutions as a way of ending tribalism in the country. The commission’s chairman Francis ole Kaparo said encouraging speaking of mother tongue in learning institutions and offices encourages exclusion as some students and workers who feel left out. “Speaking mother tongue should be totally discouraged and if possible banned as it makes other people feel not wanted yet Kenya belongs to all of us even in work places,” Kaparo told a press conference at the commission’s offices in Nairobi Monday. He said speaking in official languages of English and Kiswahili makes workers from different communities view each other as Kenyans and not based on their tribe. “Shame to those who have turned public offices and schools to places where they can just speak their mother tongue making other people from different communities feel unwanted,” he said as he released an audit report on ethnic and diversity in public institutions in the country. Kaparo said the practice should be dealt with especially in schools as the same syndrome is carried to the employment sector once students move out of the learning institutions. He also proposed inter-county transfer of staff as part of integration to reduce vernacular speaking in offices. “There should be intercounty transfers so that other communities

can be moved to other counties as part of the integration process,” he said. The constitution requires that all public appointments within public institutions have not more than 70 percent of the workforce from majority ethnic group and 30 percent from members of other ethnic groups in a particular region. It also prohibits a single community from occupying more that 30 percent of the total

workforce in any public institutions. However, Mr Kaparo said that despite the existence of the law, most institutions continue to hire more on tribal lines in total disregard of the constitution. “We are very good at making laws and we have several of them but again we (Kenyans) are very good at breaking them. So what is the point of having laws that we can’t @sam_x254 adhere to? He posed.

Renewed protests as Ethiopia mourns festival victims

Renewed protests have hit Ethiopia’s Oromia region, a day after at least 55 people were killed in a stampede triggered by clashes between police and demonstrators at a religious festival. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters angered at their handling of Sunday’s event, witnesses told the BBC. Protesters say violence by the security forces led to the stampede, but the PM denied security forces had opened fire. The government has declared three days of national mourning. A doctor at a local hospital which received many of the dead told AFP news agency that he had seen no evidence of bullet wounds on the bodies. At the funeral of one of the victims in the town of Dankaka earlier, Tadese Biru, speaking to Reuters news agency, described his anger at his son’s death. “The government is playing God’s role... Could this have happened if there were a so-called democratic system in place? “I saw bodies of people being loaded into trucks to be transported to the regions, just like aid wheat and maize. These are humans!” The town of Bishoftu, where the stampede took place, saw further unrest on Monday morning, according to an Ethiopian government official, quoted by the Associated Press news agency. Crowds took to the streets in Ambo, Guder, Bule Hora and other towns in the Oromia region in response to the deaths, witnesses told Reuters. In Ambo, 120km (75 miles) west of the capital, Addis Ababa, a local student said that everything was closed and gunshots could be heard, Reuters adds. Online, some Ethiopians have replaced their Facebook profile pictures with a black square, in solidarity with the victims. In a national address on state TV, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn praised the security forces’ “great efforts” to protect the public and blamed “evil forces” for the deaths on Sunday, vowing to bring to justice those responsible. Thousands had gathered for the religious festival in Bishoftu, 40km (25 miles) from Addis Ababa.

The annual Irecha celebration is an important festival at which the Oromo people welcome spring. But the crowds were chanting, “We need freedom” and “We need justice”, witnesses said. Police say they fired tear gas after antigovernment protesters threw stones and bottles, but others said demonstrators were entirely peaceful. The national flag is flying at halfmast at all government buildings while regular programmes on state radio have been replaced with music, AFP reports. Witnesses said the stampede started after police

fired tear gas. One protester told Associated Press he almost died after falling into a deep ditch as he was trying to flee. He was pulled out but the first people who fell into it had suffocated, he said. An Oromo activist, Jawar Mohamed, was quoted as saying that nearly 300 people had been killed and many more injured. He said troops and a helicopter gunship had opened fire, driving people off a cliff and into a lake. The government-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported that people died falling from the cliff around the lake but it made

no mention of a helicopter opening fire. There has been a series of deadly clashes in Ethiopia in recent months. People in Oromia and Amhara, two of Ethiopia’s most populous regions, have complained about political and economic marginalisation. The US has expressed concern about what it termed the excessive use of force against protesters. The unrest was sparked last November by a plan to expand the capital into Oromia. This led to fears that farmers from the Oromo ethnic group, the largest in Ethiopia, would be displaced.

Kenya governance has improved, Mo Ibrahim Foundation Index says

@sam_x254

A report by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation has revealed that Kenya has improved in governance over the past 10 years. According to the study, Kenya ranked 12th out of 54 countries in overall governance, with a score of 59 percent, a 5.1 improvement over the past 10 years. “Kenya is one of the 10 countries that improved across all four sub-categories of the Sustainable Economic Opportunity category,” the study stated. The report however indicated that the progress in African governance over the past decade was being held back by deterioration in safety and the rule of law. The 10th edition of IIAG brings together

data to assess African countries against 95 indicators drawn from 34 independent sources. The deterioration in the rule of law, it stated, had worsened recently, with almost half of the countries on the continent recording their worst score ever in this category within the last three years. This year, for the first time, the IIAG includes Public Attitude Survey data from Afro barometer. This captures Africans’ own perceptions of governance, which provide fresh perspective on the results registered by other data such expert assessment and official data. Nigerian actress apologises for ‘offensive hug’ in video A leading Nigerian actress, who was banned from the Hausa-language film industry because of her “immoral” behaviour, has apologised. Rahama Sadau’s appearance in a music video “hugging and cuddling” Nigerian pop star Classiq offended some people. Ms Sadau said sorry to those she upset, but said her actions were “innocuous”. Hausa films are popular in the mostly Muslim northern Nigeria where it is taboo for men and women to hold hands in public. The industry, commonly known as Kannywood, has been under fire from conservative Muslim clerics who accuse it of corrupting people’s values. The Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria banned the actress from Kannywood films, saying that her appearance in the video violated the industry’s code of ethics. It added that it hoped the ban would serve as a deterrent to other actors and actresses who are “expected to be good ambassadors of the society they represent”. Ms Sadau said she took full responsibility for what happened, but argued that she was behaving professionally and added that in her line of work “innocuous touching

with other people... is inevitable”. But she reassured people that she would behave with decorum, adding: “I have lines that I would never cross.” Responding to the criticism she has received she said people should “be more tolerant and forgiving towards one another and to cease all the senseless abuse, name calling and backbiting”. The Kannywood star appeared in the video with Classiq, in a song entitled I Love You. In it, the Nigerian pop star is smitten with a vegetable seller in a market, acted by Ms Sadau. Initially, she rejects his advances, batting him away with a bunch of vegetables, but he eventually wins her over. They hold hands and engage in a bit of cuddling that would be considered demure in a Western film. But many people in northern Nigeria felt she had gone too far with Classiq in the music video, correspondents in Abuja say.

US Election 2016: Clinton rips into Trump over taxes Hillary Clinton has attacked Donald Trump as the symbol of a “rigged system” after it emerged that he may not have paid income tax for 18 years. “It’s Trump first and everyone else last,” said the Democratic presidential hopeful while campaigning in Ohio. At the weekend, the New York Times claimed Mr Trump might have avoided tax due to a $1bn loss he made in 1995. But the Republican tycoon declared on Monday it showed he had “brilliantly” navigated the complex tax code. “I understand the tax laws better than almost anyone,” he said, adding that as a hotel developer and businessman, he had “legally used the tax laws to my benefit and and to the benefit of my company”. His business acumen makes him uniquely qualified to reform the tax code, he told supporters in Colorado. But his Democratic rival castigated him as a hypocrite because he casts himself as a change candidate who will reform the system in favour of working people. “While millions of American families - including mine and yours - were working hard paying our fair share, it seems he was contributing nothing,” said Mrs Clinton. “Trump represents the same rigged

system that he claims he’s going to change.” The tax row is sure to be continued on Tuesday on the debate stage when the two candidates’ running mates, Republican Governor Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine, duel in Virginia. Mr Trump has been on the defensive for a week, ever since the first presidential debate with Mrs Clinton in which he was widely thought to have been second best.

A CNN/ORC poll on Monday night suggests Mrs Clinton has received a post-debate bump. With five weeks to go until the election, she has pulled five points ahead nationally according to the poll, and is getting away from him in some of the key battleground states. Nearly three-quarters of those polled said Mr Trump should release his tax returns.

Chase Bank optimistic of making full near term recovery Chase Bank, which went into receivership last April, is optimistic of making a full recovery in the near future, partly by seeking new business from the youth and upstarts, an official from the lending institution has said. The lender’s Youth Banking Manager, Lonina Leteipan said that the financial group would remain vibrant by supporting enterprise ideas by upcoming business entities as part of their recovery strategy. “Youth banking has always been a core pillar for Chase Bank and therefore we are always keen to take part in initiatives that support the growth of young entrepreneurs as the youth are the future of this country,” said Leteipan. Speaking at the Young Entrepreneurs Dinner (YED) at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Leteipan said that the bank was also exploring ways of engaging young businesses as part of their turnaround strategy. “For 20 years now, Chase Bank has been at the epicenter of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, giving support to companies that have grown to become market leaders. We are constantly looking for ways to enable young businesses and individuals achieve what matters most to them,” added Leteipan.

Kenya’s anti-poaching proposal receives support at SA conference A document tabled by Kenya at the 17th Conference of the Parties (CoP 17) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Johannesburg has received support from no less than 183 parties. The parties have committed to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to engage with online marketplaces and social media platforms in order to crack down on wildlife cyber-criminals. At the forum, Kenya’s representative said the country was concerned by the threat that wildlife cyber-crime poses to the survival of endangered wildlife. “Enforcement operations and prosecutions show that criminals who seek to profit from the illegal trade in endangered wildlife are now utilizing the Internet to enable their criminal activities,” said Kenya. “It is essential that we have robust laws specifically addressing the unique threat posed by online wildlife crime while also increasing enforcement knowledge and intelligence on this issue. In addition, it is necessary to engage e-commerce

platforms who can assist law enforcers but also improve consumer awareness.” The decision calls on the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to bring together the enforcement community in order to effectively police online wildlife crime. Parties will now also have the opportunity to convene and review their legislation. “This decision will lead to a much more cohesive counter offensive against wildlife cybercriminals,” said Tania McCrea-Steele, Global Wildlife Cybercrime Project Lead for International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Parties that spoke in favour of the decision were Syria, Guinea, Israel, India, Malaysia, Senegal, Liberia, Costa Rica, the Maldives, Nigeria, South Africa and the European Union. The amount of money lost due to environmental crime is 10,000 times greater than the amount of money spent by international agencies on combating it, according to a rapid response report published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Interpol.

Family Bank offers staff voluntary early retirement package Mid-tier lender, Family Bank has announced a voluntary early retirement program for its staff who are on permanent and pensionable terms. Family Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive David Thuku says this is one aspect of the wider transformation program that the bank launched in June this year. He says the program was necessitated by assessment of its business model, with a focus on deploying capital efficiently to improve overall performance and growth of the bank. “The bank has been re-modelling its business through this program to position itself for the emerging opportunities in the market. It is intended for staff that may already be considering early retirement and is not driven by a predetermined target number,” Thuku said. The program is entirely elective and shall be closed on October 14, 2016. “Family Bank is a major player in the Kenyan financial services industry with a vast network of 93 branches countrywide. Its resilience and stability is clearly demonstrated

through its 32 year existence,” he added. The announcement comes just as Family Bank revealed plans to lay off part of its workforce in a bid to cut down on costs. Permanent and pensionable employees will be given a chance to take up voluntary early retirement before the bank moves to cut numbers down further. In a Memo to employees, the bank said the move is part of the transformation strategy focused on efficient capital deployment to boost the bank’s performance. The banking sector is facing numerous challenges with the latest being the interest rates cap at 4 percent central banks’ rate. Analysts have predicted the cap will reduce banks’ profitability. Investment services group Renaissance Capital notes that the impact on profitability will only start to feed through 2017 as banks have already benefitted from the three quarters of higher net interest margins in 2016.

UN rejects Namibia and Zimbabwe’s bid to export ivory, rhino horn Kenya’s bid to put an end to ivory trade has received renewed support from the United Nations (UN) as Zimbabwe and Namibia failed convince the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) that they should be allowed to export elephant ivory. Meanwhile, Swaziland lost a bid to sell rhino horn - moves they all argued would protect the animals rather than endanger them. Kenya, among other African nations, is strongly opposed to any reopening of the ivory or horn trade on the grounds that it will stimulate demand and threaten their animals. In the secret ballots, Namibia’s proposal was defeated by 73 to 27, Zimbabwe’s by 80 to 21, both far short of the two-thirds required to pass. Swaziland’s was defeated by 100 to 26. Rhino horn can be harvested from a sedated animal, as it grows back, although most poachers simply opt for a kill. To

extract a whole ivory tusk, an elephant must be killed. Member states of the UN Convention voted overwhelmingly at a conference to reject the proposals to sell tusks and horns, whether they are seized from poachers or taken from animals that die naturally or have been put down by the state because they were, for instance, destroying crops. “African elephants are in steep decline across much of the continent due to poaching for their ivory, and opening up any legal trade in ivory would complicate efforts to conserve them,” said Ginette Hemley, head of conservation group WWF’s CITES delegation. “It could offer criminal syndicates new avenues to launder poached ivory.” A global ban on ivory sales was imposed in 1989 to curb a wave of poaching but, in one-off rulings, CITES allowed Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to sell stockpiles to Japan, and South Africa to sell to China and Japan in 2008.

Savannah Cement is marking its Customer Service week as the local manufacturer moves to woo its clients. The cement producer has been working to expand its presence across the country as one of the youngest entrants in the industry. Savannah Cements latest move comes just three months after the cement maker signed a collaborative agreement with leading academic development institution, Kenyatta University. The agreement will provide a collaborative platform for the two organisations to engage in joint research activities, innovation, student internship and capacity building among other areas of mutual benefit. Earlier this year, Savannah completed a major plant upgrade geared towards boosting the firm’s production and customer service efficiency. The firm, which operates a new generation cement grinding mill based on the ecofriendly, Roller press technology, has undertaken an extensive improvement of

Gabon calls on African countries to help combat illegal fishing

Gabon’s government has urged other African countries to collaborate in marine protection and the fight against illegal fishing in continental waters. The announcement follows the successful conclusion of a five-month long surveillance investigation at sea dubbed Operation Albacore, a pioneering collaboration between Sea Shepherd Global, a global NGO that fights illegal fishing and conserves marine biodiversity, and the Gabonese Government. Gabonese Minister of State and Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Gabriel Tchango, said that Operation Albacore brought to light the heavy toll of illegal fishing and the need for effective law enforcement and collaboration. It also comes just as the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) has warned of the emergence of a hook and line fishing method that is threatening fish production in Lake Naivasha. KEMFRi’s experts have warned that all the gains made in the lake could be eroded if the system that targets brooders is not contained. “Fishing is an important economic activity for our country. Gabon’s Exclusive Economic Zone covers an area of over 200,000 square kilometres of highly productive waters and accounts for 20 per cent of Atlantic tuna global catches. As a continent, we need to join hands to fight illegal fishing that threatens our economic mainstay,” Mr Tchango explained. During the 2016 tuna-fishing season, Operation Albacore conducted 5 missions in 21 days in Gabonese and Sao Tomean waters. The most horrifying discovery by a mixed team from Gabon and Sao Tome boarding a Spanish long liner authorized to fish tuna in Sao Tomean waters was the extent and violence of the by-catch. @enock_x254

Online retail sector struggles to expand, banks on middle-class Kenya’s growing middle-class will help in determining the future of the online retail industry, a study by Uqalo Research has revealed. The October 2016 study, titled ‘An Overview of the Online Retail Space in sub-Saharan Africa’, has found that online retail or e-commerce is evolving across SubSaharan Africa (SSA). “The rhetoric of ‘Africa rising’ with its burgeoning African middle class and consumer market has been slightly deflated since the beginning of 2016 with average GDP growth across Africa sinking below 5 per cent,” reads part of the analysis, which was released just days ago. Based on the research, perceptions of the size and growth trajectory of the consumer sector also vary with some forecasts claiming that online retail sales in South Africa, will rise to US$770m by 2018 whilst others suggest the market will be worth $50 billion (Sh5 trillion) by then. Growth of the consumer market in SSA is still set expand as the “young and connected middle class is growing fast and still deciding on its favourite brands.”. In this context, online retail remains relevant as African consumers turn to new and innovative ways to transact. The optimism of the expansion of the

online retail sector has been tempered by limited broadband exposure and slow changes in consumers’ shopping cultures and as it stands today, online retail, even in the more developed markets of South Africa and Nigeria, largely remains in its infancy. “While 1 per cent represents a very small proportion of overall retail, it is also a psychological barrier for investment in e-commerce initiatives by physical retailers,” explains Arthur Goldstuck, Managing Director of World Wide Worx, a South Africa-based business research company. Given these limitations, measured optimism and extensive potential, the e-commerce space presents a unique value proposition for investors, retailers and consumers in SSA, says the study. Most of the online retail space in SSA remains unchartered with potential lying in innovative ways to encourge African consumers to move towards transacting online. Several dominant players have emerged across the region, attempting to apply the e-commerce models of e-commerce giants such as Amazon and eBay and China’s answer to eBay, Alibaba. The sector continues to be dominated by African Internet Group, now known as Jumia Group, whose suite of online platforms

continues to gain traction across various markets, especially its two retail sites Jumia and Kaymu. The other platforms include Konga, MallforAfrica and Kilimall which are seeking to apply traditional e-commerce models in the African context in order to capture consumers to the online retail space. Jumia Group, previously known as African Internet Holdings, is the largest e-commerce company in Africa with eleven digital ventures, ranging from food delivery, classified advertising sites, hotel bookings and the e-retailer Jumia. com (Jumia). Based on Uqalo’s research, various obstacles to e-commerce exist across the region including unreliable internet connections, logistical challenges, low bank card penetration as well as a general distrust of transacting online. Internet access poses as the most inhibiting limitation for the sector across SSA as this remains inadequate and expensive with restricted broadband across the region and home internet access constrained to a small wealthy elite. Internet usage across the continent is predicted at only 26.8 per cent of the population making use of the internet, with only a 7.231 per cent increase in internet penetration from 2000 to 2015. Dennis_x254

Some online businesses such as Jumia and Konga in Nigeria and Kilimall in Kenya have turned to the use of delivery motorbikes to reduce lead times and thus the cost of doing business.

F

ast food can’t be accused of being healthy in any way. Although the food option has been present in the country for a long time, the migration of numerous fast food outlets into the capital have made the greasy stuff readily available to many. American pizza chain Pizza Hut recently unveiled its new screwball creation the Triple Treat Box in Nairobi. The box which consists of two medium sized pizzas, a chocolate pizza and chips going for Sh.1500 is definitely one for the books. Leaving aside the calorie count, the meal alone is not one that should be consumed by a single person. But this is not the only monstrosity that American fast food chains have released into the public. Here’s a quick look at some combinations we never though would see the light of day;

@kevin_x254

im Kardashian seems to be having quite an eventful Paris Fashion Week, after nearly being assaulted by notorious prankster Vitalii Sediuk last week, the socialite was held at gunpoint by masked gunmen masquerading as police officers at a luxury residence in France. International media reports state that jewelry worth millions was stolen but Kardashian was not physically harmed after the incident. Husband Kanye West, reportedly cut short his show at Meadows Music & Arts Festival in Queens, New York after learning of the robbery. In a statement to E News, Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner, stated that the reality TV star was doing fine, “She will be OK,” she said.

combinations ever created

KFC Double Down This rather ingenious creation would have passed as any innocuous item on the menu except for the fact that it is a ‘pseudo-sandwich.’ It consists of ‘bacon, two different kinds of melted cheese, the Colonel’s secret sauce... pinched in between two pieces of Original Recipe chicken fillets.’ In short is a breadless sandwich that wants customers to consume more calories, clocking in at 540 of pure chicken goodness. Pizza Hut’s Hot Dog Bites pizza Another Pizza Hut mutant. This pizza should not exist but it does. Online reviews all seem to call the pizza iterations of a metaphorical death which is then followed by a long visit to the washroom. The pizza is surround by 28 mini-hotdogs and the bread comes in ‘regular’ flavor and pretzel bread, which does not exactly make things healthier. Krispy Kreme’s Bacon Donut Hot Dog Donuts on their own do not exactly represent a picture of healthy living but adding bacon into the mix is just asking for trouble. Apparently looking to make the most American fast food snack, this creation merges two of America’s favourite food items. It consists of a donut/hotdog bun filled with hot dog meat, raspberry jam, and chopped bacon. Dunkin’ Donuts Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich Yet again donuts make an appearance on this list. This combination consists of fried eggs and bacon between two halves of a donut that are supposed to substitute slices of bread. So clearly bread is no longer trendy. If you are looking to douse your ‘boring’ breakfast sandwich in heaps of sugar then this is for you, just be sure to work off the 360 calories later on.

Ekhalie replaces Wanyama as Stars take on DR Congo Finland based midfielder Amos Ekhalie has been called up to the Harambee Stars squad that traveled to Lubumbashi, DR Congo for an international friendly with the host nation tonight. Ekhalie had not been initially listed when head coach Stanley Okumbi named his provisional 39-man squad, but the 28-year old was sounded for his first call up to replace Wanyama who has been left out for fitness reasons. The midfielder who turns out for Finnish top tier side IFK Mariehamn will link up with the team in Lubumbashi today alongside Las Palmas’ Ismail Gonzalez, Greece based Aboud Omar and IF Djugardens’ Michael Olunga ahead of the match scheduled to kick off at 8pm. Okumbi has named eight local based players in his squad to Lubumbashi with Ulinzi Stars shot stopper James Saruni earning a slot in the travelling party for the first time. “I feel really privileged for the coaches to show their faith in me. I have been working very hard and these are the fruits of hard work. I am looking forward to the challenge,” Saruni said. Saruni will compete for selection with Bonface Oluoch in goal while Haron Shakava, Eric Ouma (Gor), Joakins Atudo (Posta Rangers), Victor Majid (Chemelil), Eric Johanna (Mathare) and Ulinzi’s John Makwatta are the other local players set to feature. Swansea City sack Guidolin as manager, appoint Bob Bradley TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2016

Swansea City have sacked Francesco Guidolin as head coach and replaced him with former USA manager Bob Bradley. The Swans have not won in the Premier League since the opening day of the season and are 17th in the table. Bradley, who has also managed Egypt and Norwegian side Stabaek, leaves French second-tier team Le Havre to succeed Guidolin, who was appointed in January. The club’s hierarchy spoke to several potential candidates, including former Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs. American Bradley, 58, will take over a Swansea side who have lost their past three league matches and find themselves above the relegation zone only on goal difference. Guidolin has been under intense pressure - which was increased by Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool - and his sacking was announced on his 61st birthday on Monday. Three members of the Italian’s backroom staff - Diego Bortoluzzi, Gabrielle Ambrosetti, Claudio Bordon - have also left the Welsh club. Swans chairman Huw Jenkins said he was “disappointed” to sack Guidolin but added that the club “needed to change things as soon as possible in order to move forward in a positive way”. The chairman said Bradley is viewed as a “long-term appointment” who will “stabilise matters on and off the pitch”. “He is highly regarded as a coach and

has a wealth of experience on the international and domestic front,” added Jenkins. “He is well aware of the club’s footballing philosophy and will provide us with strong leadership qualities and a renewed belief to compete at this level.” Swansea City also spoke to former Wales and Manchester United captain Ryan Giggs, ex-Derby County manager Paul Clement and former Sevilla and Villarreal coach Marcelino about the manager’s job. BBC Wales has learned neither of the

club’s American owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien, knew Bradley personally before the selection process began. Their advisor Landon Donovan, the former USA captain, took no part in the decision. Bradley may bring in an assistant, but Alan Curtis will continue to have a key role in first-team affairs. The American’s first match in charge will be at Arsenal on 15 October, after the international break. Swansea City Supporters’ Trust, which holds a 21% stake in the club, issued a statement saying it is

“disappointed” not to be consulted over the managerial change. “Having been an integral part of the club board for 15 years we are saddened that decisions as major as this can be taken without our involvement, despite earlier assurances from the new majority shareholders that they wished to work closely with the Supporters’ Trust,” it added. “We are also frustrated and angry that the club have allowed the speculation over the manager’s future to be played out in public.”

Bradley: Swansea coaching job is special Swansea City’s new manager Bob Bradley says his appointment is a key moment for United States football. The 58-year-old former USA boss is the first American to manage in the Premier League, following the Swans’ sacking of Francesco Guidolin. After his last game in charge of French side Le Havre, Bradley said: “To go to the Premier League is special. “It’s still an opportunity for me, for my family and for American football. That’s important.” The Welsh side have won just once in their past seven matches and are 17th

in the Premier League table.

Swansea’s American owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien, and chairman Huw Jenkins ended the 10-month tenure of Italian Guidolin on Monday with the club above the relegation places only on goal difference. Bradley beat ex-Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs, former Derby boss Paul Clement and the onetime Villarreal manager Marcelino to the job after spells in Egypt, Norway and France since leaving the USA in

2011. He spent last season at French secondtier side Le Havre, missing out on promotion to Ligue 1 by a single goal. “I am sorry to leave, especially at this moment,” said Bradley after Monday’s 2-1 win over Sochaux,a result that left Le Havre fifth in Ligue 2. “In a perfect world I would go right to the end with this team just like last year - but football does not control timing.” Bradley is expected to take his first training session at Swansea on Wednesday, with the club’s next game

against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 15 October after the international break. His first decision is likely to be the make-up of his support staff. Guidolin’s backroom team - Diego Bortoluzzi, Gabriele Ambrosetti and Claudio Bordon - were released alongside the 61-year-old, who was dismissed on his birthday. Club stalwart Alan Curtis, who spent time as interim manager last season following Garry Monk’s December departure, is expected to play a key role at the Liberty Stadium.

Aston Villa sack Di Matteo after just four months

Aston Villa have sacked Roberto di Matteo as manager after just 124 days in the job. Villa are now looking for their fifth boss inside a year after deciding to replace the Italian, who won just one of 11 Championship games in charge. Former Chelsea player and manager Di Matteo, 46, was appointed shortly after C h i n e s e businessman Dr Tony Xia took over Villa on 2 June. Di Matteo’s assistant Steve Clarke will take over as caretaker manager. A club statement confirming the exit of former West Bromwich Albion boss Di Matteo said: “The club decided to act following a run of disappointing results which has the left the team occupying 19th position. “The club would like to place on record its appreciation to Roberto for all his efforts in helping rebuild the squad.” Former Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce and ex-Wolves manager Mick McCarthy are among the early favourites to replace him. Villa were booed off by their fans after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Preston - Di Matteo’s final game in charge.

Burnley’s Keane gets first England call-up Burnley defender Michael Keane has been handed his first international call-up after Stoke’s Glen Johnson withdrew from the England squad through injury. Keane, 23, who has played for England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels, will report to St George’s Park on Tuesday with the rest of the squad. Gareth Southgate called him up after Johnson was ruled out of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Malta. Keane has featured in all of Burnley’s Premier League games this term. Between 2013 and 2016 the former Manchester United trainee made 16 appearances for the under-21s side under Southgate, who has been made interim manager of the senior team. Keane is the second player to be called up by Southgate in two days since the announcement of his first squad on Monday after Andros Townsend replaced injured fellow winger Raheem Sterling.

Jesse Lingard, Keane called to England squad as Townsend makes a comeback TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2016

Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard has been called up by interim England manager Gareth Southgate for World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia. The 23-year-old winger, part of Southgate’s Under-21 squad at the 2015 European Championship, has scored one goal in four United games this season. Club team-mate Marcus Rashford is back in the senior squad after scoring a hat-trick against Norway Under-21s. Southgate has taken on the England role after Sam Allardyce left on Tuesday. He will take charge of the Wembley game with Malta on Saturday and the trip to Slovenia three days later. Lingard has been named in the senior squad once before, but failed to make it onto the field in England’s 2-0 friendly win over France in November. Stoke right-back Glen Johnson returns to the England set-up for the first time since the 2014 World Cup, while winger Alex OxladeChamberlain is back after a year’s absence. Also lucky to return is Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend who replaced Raheem Sterling after the Manchester City winger pulled out because of injury. Townsend, 25, has played 11 times for his country and scored three goals, but was not selected for Euro 2016.

He has played in all seven of Palace’s league games since joining from Newcastle for £13m in the summer. No details have yet been given on Manchester City forward Sterling’s injury. Southgate said that Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater had been ruled out after picking up an injury at the weekend, as were Liverpool pair Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne who were injured in the Reds’ win at Swansea on Saturday. “We’ve tried to keep some continuity from last month because my view would be that there are a lot of things that have been going right,” said Southgate. “We’ve had a few people unavailable through injury like Harry Kane and Jack Butland, while Luke Shaw isn’t quite back fit yet. That’s had a bearing on the squad.” England lie second in Group F, level on three points with leaders Scotland, after Lallana’s late goal gave Allardyce victory away to Slovakia in his only match in charge. After the Malta and Slovenia games, Southgate also has the home game against Scotland on 11 November and a friendly against Spain on 15 November to press his claim for the job before the Football Association makes a decision on a permanent appointment. Allardyce’s reign came to an end after only 67 days after he was filmed apparently advising undercover reporters on how to get around rules

over third parties owning players. Fifa president wants 48-team World Cup Fifa president Gianni Infantino has proposed expanding the World Cup finals to a 48team tournament - a larger number than his election promise. The Italian suggested 16 of those teams would be eliminated after one knockout match - before the group stages. The rest of the tournament would be the same as it is now, with 32 teams competing in group stages followed by knockout rounds. One of his election promises was to expand the finals to 40 teams. Infantino said a decision would be taken by the governing body’s council in January. “These are ideas to find the best solution, we will debate them this month and we will decide everything by 2017,” said the 46-year-

old. “They are ideas which we put forward to see which one is the best.” Infantino took charge of football’s world governing body in February after the disgraced Sepp Blatter resigned. Under his proposal, a preliminary knockout round in the host country would involve 32 teams with the winners reaching the groups, while a further 16 seeded teams would get a bye to that stage. “It means we continue with a normal World Cup for 32 teams, but 48 teams go to the party,” he added. “Fifa’s idea is to develop football in the whole world, and the World Cup is the biggest event there is. It’s more than a competition, it’s a social event.”

Gor branches demand elections by Dec 4

A storm is brewing at Gor Mahia over club elections with a section of the branches giving an ultimatum to the current office to organise polls by latest December 4. The demand came just a few days after a hurriedly called Special General Meeting was called off in equal pace. Addressing the press yesterday, Kondele branch chairman Hezron Okoth who spoke on behalf of 15 of the 23 Gor Mahia branch chairmen asked the office to call for an elective Annual

General Meeting and not an SGM as earlier planned. An elective AGM had been initially set for February when the term of the current office expired, but the incumbents postponed to give the club time to align with the Sports Act, a mandatory requirement put out for all sports institutions by the Ministry of Sports. “It is long overdue and they ought to call us for an AGM. They are currently in office illegally according to the constitution. Okoth said,
