Doctors at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) have successfully removed a knife that remained stuck in the cheek of a Wajir woman who was stabbed by her husband yesterday. Fatuma Ibrahim was allegedly stabbed by her husband on the right cheek bone following a domestic quarrel. She was airlifted to Nairobi for special treatment after doctors at the Wajir County Referral hospital said they could not remove the knife. And today, KNH Chief Executive Officer Lily Koros told Capital FM News that doctors at the hospital successfully conducted a surgery on the 32-year-old mother of four at about midnight and removed the knife. Koros assured that Fatuma is currently recuperating following the operation. “I was with her until midnight when the operation was done,” she stated. According to police in Wajir, woman was stabbed following a domestic quarrel with her husband who has already been arrested. The assailant, Mohamed Deeq, 36, is alleged to have pounced on his wife with a knife shortly after returning from a herding expedition after the two differed. But the woman raised alarm and the assailant’s elder brother responded to her distress calls. She was then rushed to Wajir County Referral Hospital yesterday morning with severe bleeding. The knife was also lodged in her cheek and doctors at the facility were unable to dislodge it prompting her airlifting to Nairobi for a special operation. She was airlifted to Nairobi by AMREF which dispatched a plane to Wajir following the incident. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

County Chief of Staff falls ill, fails to appear in court to face graft charge

Nairobi County Chief of Staff George Wainaina failed to appear in court today to face graft charges. His lawyer Cliff Ombeta told the court that Wainaina was taken ill and is admitted to the Karen Hospital. He asked the court to allow Wainaina to plead to the charges on a later date. The prosecution wanted the court to issue a warrant for his arrest but it was ruled that he was not obliged to appear in court and was only required to report to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission offices on earlier in the morning. The court said a warrant would be issued after seven days. Wainaina’s co-accused Roseline Oluoch, however, went ahead and denied the charges leveled against her. She was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000 or the alternative surety bond of Sh1.5 million. The case will be mentioned on January 15, 2016. The two were arrested by EACC detectives on Wednesday night but were released on a Sh200, 000 police bail pending their appearance in court on Friday. They were arrested over allegations of wanting to bribe Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko with Sh1 million. In a statement read by Deputy Director Corporate Communications Kairichi Marimba, EACC deputy CEO Michael Mubea says the bribe was an inducement to the Senator to have a suit he filed over the Loresho

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko when he visited the Loresho wetland. It is alleged that the County Chief of Staff tried to bribe him with Sh1 million to drop a suit challenging the grabbing of the land. The accused today failed to appear in court to face the charges after he fell ill.

Uhuru takes message of peace to Lamu residents President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on the Muslim community in the country to support the government in its efforts to promote peace and protect basic rights of all Kenyans including freedom of worship. He said there is need for all Kenyans of goodwill to join hands and preach peace without which no tangible development can take place. “We need to honour and respect each other as Kenyans and ensure the freedom of worship and other basic rights are fully guarded,” said President Kenyatta. He was speaking in Lamu town when he joined the Muslim faithful for evening Maulidi prayer at the Riyadha Mosque. The President pointed out that he had held discussions with Lamu leaders with a view of fastracking development in the area. He said the government will speed up implementation of various projects earmarked for the area in order to create job and investment opportunities for both

the locals and foreigners. Lamu Governor Issa Timamy thanked the President for joining the residents of Lamu in marking the annual Maulidi celebrations in the County. Speaking during the function, Sheikh Abdi Kadri who was leading the prayers said Islam is a religion of peace and that those who act contrary are enemies not only of humanity but also of God. He said as per the teachings of the Holy Koran, Islam does not advocate violence but rather values human life. “Islam gives its followers freedom and does not discriminate women but empowers them to achieve their goals in life,” said the Riyadha Mosque Sheikh. Sheikh Abdi Kadri commended the Government for helping the Muslim clergy come up with curriculum of de-radicalisation. President Kenyatta was expected in Faza Island in Lamu County to issue title deeds to the residents of the Island.

National Treasury, governors form team to address procurement challenges The National Treasury and the Council of Governors (COG) have formed a multi-sectoral taskforce to address challenges facing the implementation of e-procurement in the counties. The devolved units have enumerated a list of challenges affecting the contentious e-procurement which the council has opposed in the past. Yesterday, COG chairman Peter Munya and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya met National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich in a bid to resolve the concerns raised by Governors on the use of e-procurement at the county level. Oparanya who chairs the Council of Governors Finance Committee told the Cabinet Secretary that lack of proper infrastructure and capacity challenges were hindering implementation of e-procurement. “The Council of Governors is committed to the implementation of IFMIS and e-procurement, but it is important to deliberate on administrative, technical and legal issues that will streamline

Wiper MPs hit back at ‘rebel’ Governor Mutua

Two legislators from Machakos County have slammed Machakos Governor for allegedly undermining Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and engaging in “cheap politics at the expense of development.” Patrick Makau (Mavoko) and Robert Mbui (Kathiani) said Mutua has been hoodwinking Kenyans over his development achievements whereas the people who voted for him have nothing to smile about. Speaking in different functions in the county, the two legislators elected on a Wiper partty ticket said the woes affecting the people of Machakos are as a result of nepotism and corruption which has become synonymous with Mutua’s government. Mavoko MP claimed Mutua’s sustained and continued ‘public relations development’ agenda was just but a cover-up for entrenched corruption prevalent in his government. “The County Government is collecting Sh400

million from the people of Mavoko. Unfortunately, the better part of this money is ending in the pockets of the people working for the Governor and to host delegations from Kitui and Makueni counties instead of being used to address the problems we have at home,” said Makau . He further saidd it was unfair for the County Government to continue collecting revenue from the people without showing value for the money in form of development projects. Besides, he warned that Mutua would lose his gubernatorial seat come 2017 for his perceived loyalty to Jubilee. “The Governor should be prepared for what is in store for him as an overwhelming surprise come the next General Election. I am prepared to lose my parliamentary seat but ensure Mutua does not get even a 100 votes out of the 104,000 registered voters in my Constituency,” dared Makau. On his part ,

Kathiani MP Robert Mbai accused Mutua of betraying the people of Machakos County and be will be in for a rude shock come 2017 general elections. Mbai claimed the governor had been hoodwinking Kenyans over his development achievements whereas the people who voted for him have nothing to smile about. “We elected our Governor on a Wiper ticket to bring development closer to our people in a bid to reduce poverty levels. Unfortunately, he has not only reneged on his promises but also gone ahead in betraying the very party which ushered him to office,” claimed Mbai. Governor Mutua recently launched Maendeleo Chap Chap Movement in what he described as a socio-economic movement geared in boosting the region’ development. However, the launch of the initiative has been opposed by area leaders including his party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

The team will look into challenges that counties face the implementation of the electronic procurement and payment platform and is expected to report back to the National Treasury and the council on the way forward by end of this month. Recommendations by the taskforce are expected to be implemented in the course of next month to pave way to a more efficient use of e-procurement in all counties starting March this year. Rotich said the use of the IFMIS system at both levels of government will ensure robust public financial management system. Rotich further said the findings of the Task Force will also be used to review the legal policy and institutional framework for fighting corruption in Kenya, adding that 70 per cent of reported corruption takes place at the procurement function.

NEWS BRIEFS

Australia bushfire ravages towns A massive bushfire that devastated a small town is still burning out of control in Western Australia. About 95 houses in Yarloop, south of Perth, have been destroyed and three people are reported to be missing. Wind gusts of up to 60km/h (37mph) overnight fanned the blaze, dubbed the Waroona fire, to heights of 50m. The fire area is now 58,000 hectares and emergency warnings remain in place for Waroona, Harvey and surrounding areas including Preston Beach. A local politician told the BBC the fire “could well be the end” of Yarloop. Western Australia Fire Commissioner Wayne Gregson told a news conference that the fire in Yarloop was too intense to be tackled head-on. He said four firefighters were injured battling the blaze and one fire truck was destroyed. A large thunderstorm hit the town of Pinjarra to the north of the fire zone at about 10:00 local time (02:00 GMT). Reports said lightning struck an evacuation centre in the town, injuring a man in his 50s and cutting power. The storm was understood to be heading towards the fire zone - a downpour of rain could ease conditions, but lightning strikes could also spark further fires. Local politician Murray Cowper told the BBC that the loss of property was “significant”. He said firefighters told him the town’s pub, bowling club and historic timber workshops had been destroyed.

More than 100 killed’ in Ethiopia protests More than 100 people have been killed during the recent wave of protests by Oromos in Ethiopia, the New York-based campaign group Human Rights Watch (HRW) says. It quotes activists as saying that “security forces have killed at least 140 protesters and injured many more”. The rights group also calls for the release of leading Oromo politician Bekele Gerba - the deputy chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress. He has been in detention since 23 December and HRW says his whereabouts are currently unknown. Ethiopia’s Oromia region has been hit by a wave of protests as members of the country’s largest ethnic group have been objecting to a plan to expand the city boundaries of the capital, Addis Ababa, into the area.

South Sudan’s Kiir finally shares positions with rebels The war-ravaged South Sudan finally has a peace agreement that is expected to bring lasting peace in the country after President Salva Kiir early today named 50 lawmakers from the rebel movement and agreed to share ministerial posts. The move to share the ministerial positions with his rivals is in line with a peace deal agreed on last year in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia which is aimed at ending a two-year civil war. In a decree broadcast on state radio, Kiir announced the appointment of 50 members of Parliament named by the rebel side. According to a communique from Festus Mogae, a former Botswana President who heads the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) set up by regional bloc IGAD to ensure the peace deal is implemented, said the government would be given 16 ministerial posts — including defence, national security, finance and justice — and the rebels 10 posts, including oil and humanitarian affairs. A group of unarmed opposition parties will run the Cabinet affairs and agriculture portfolios. The country has not had much progress to show yet from the peace agreement signed in August. The warring parties have however decided to break the jinx this morning and have agreed on how to share out ministerial positions in a

transitional government of national unity, the body monitoring the process has said. Unconfirmed reports also indicated that President Salva Kiir met with the rebels in Nairobi in December. The agenda has not yet been made public. Kiir and rebel chief Riek Machar have accused each other of breaking successive peace deals but say they remain committed to the August 26 agreement, despite missing every listed deadline. The deal will

now see Riek Machar return to the country’s capital Juba and resume his position as the Vice President which he was sacked in 2013. The civil war began in December 2013 when Kiir accused Machar of planning a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings that have split the poverty-stricken country along ethnic lines. Accusations and counter accusations by both the government and the opposition has always hindered the lasting of any peace

agreement. Previous ceasefire agreements brokered by IGAD were violated within days and failed to bring a sustainable solution to a conflict that has claimed the lives of thousands, displaced over 2 million in the world’s newest country. Both government and rebels have criticised IGAD for trying to impose a solution for the sake of signing an agreement, while not paying sufficient heed to the concerns of the two sides

Ex-Premiers to battle it out in CAR poll run-off

Two ex-prime ministers in the Central African Republic will contest a run-off after no candidate gained 50% in the first round of presidential elections, officials have said. Anicet Georges Dologuele, who came first with 24%, will face Anicet Georges Dologuele who led the polls with 24 percent when he cast his vote last week. INSET, his closest challenger Faustin Touadera who came second with 19%.

Faustin Touadera, who got 19%, on 31 January. Last week, more than a million people took part in the first presidential election since a coup in March 2013. The country has since been wracked by conflict along religious lines.

Twenty of the 30 candidates vying to replace interim leader Catherine Samba-Panza had earlier this week complained of irregularities and called for the count to be halted. But many of them were persuaded by the transitional government to withdraw their complaints, and the constitutional court will have to look into the remaining grievances. Mr Dologuele was prime minister between 1999 and 2001, and has also served as the country’s finance minister. Mr Touadera was prime minister in the government of exPresident Francois Bozize, who was overthrown in 2013. CAR has been torn by sectarian

violence since the Seleka rebels seized power in March 2013. A band of mostly Christian militias, called the anti-Balaka, then took up arms against the Seleka. The interim government and international donors pushed for the poll, believing that an elected president and parliament would help CAR recover from years of unrest. CAR is one of the world’s poorest countries - yet it is rich in natural resources. Elections also took place for the 149-seat National Assembly. After seizing power, the Seleka rebels installed Michel Djotodia as the first Muslim leader of the majority Christian country. But under pressure from regional leaders and former colonial power France, Mr Djotodia stood down and was succeeded by Ms SambaPanza. About 1.8 million people were registered to vote, out of a population of roughly five million. More than one million people fled their homes during the communal fighting.

New attack stuns Paris Paris, on edge after weathering a year of jihadist violence, faced a fresh scare Thursday as police shot dead a knifewielding man on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. An image of the ISIS flag, printed on paper, was found on the man’s body, along with a handwritten note in Arabic from him claiming responsibility for the attack, the Paris prosecutor’s office said in a statement. The office’s anti-terror section is investigating. The man, whose identity is not known, was shot as he attempted to enter a police station in the northern Paris neighborhood of Barbes, bearing a butcher’s knife and yelling “Allahu Akbar,” the statement said. He was carrying a fake explosive device, it said. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said at a press conference that investigations were underway to determine the identity of the attacker and his motivations. “In a country where the threat level is extremely high, the police and gendarmerie are on the front lines,” he said. “I’d like to thank them for their very great courage ... and their commitment to protect the French people.” The attempted attack took place at 11:30 a.m., the Paris prosecutor’s office said -- a year to the minute since the Charlie Hebdo killings, the first of a spate of deadly jihadist attacks that have roiled the French capital over the past 12 months. In those attacks, two gunmen killed 12 people at the offices of the French satirical magazine, which had angered Islamists for its irreverent approach to Islam and publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. Two more attacks -- one against a police officer and another that included a hostage-taking at a kosher supermarket -- brought the final death toll to 17. On high alert against the jihadist threat since then, France suffered an even greater blow November 13 when 130

‘Dozens dead’ as Libya police are targeted with a bomb At least 47 people have been killed by a truck bomb targeting a police training centre in the western Libyan city of Zliten, reports say. Media in Libya said the attack struck the al-Jahfal training camp. The camp was a military base during the rule of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. In a separate attack, a suicide bomber killed six people at the entrance to Ras Lanuf, a major oil port in northern Libya. One of those killed was a 16-month-old child, according to Osama al-Hodeiri, a spokesman for the security forces that guard the oil facilities. “A driver in a Toyota Land Cruiser blew himself up at a checkpoint at the entrance to the town of Ras Lanuf,” he said, adding that three guards had also been killed. Libya has been hit by instability since Gaddafi’s overthrow and killing in 2011, and there is concern the so-called Islamic State (IS) group is gaining a foothold there. The country has been run by two governments only one of which is recognised by the international community. A spokesman for the ministry of health of the rival government based in the capital, Tripoli, told the BBC that 47 people were killed and more than 100 people were injured in the first attack, which was reportedly heard 60km (40 miles) away in Misrata. Other news agencies have put the death toll at 50. This is one of the deadliest bomb attacks in Libya and comes at a time when hospitals across the country are suffering from severe shortages in medical supplies. The explosion was similar in size and impact to the multiple bombings in the eastern town of al-Qubbah that targeted a petrol station in February last year. That incident was claimed by the so-called Islamic State group, just a few months after it established a foothold in the country. The latest explosion has not been officially claimed by any group yet, but it comes against the backdrop of intensified attacks this week carried out by IS militants near Libya’s eastern oil ports.

WTO Sh21 trn promise in global gains after Nairobi conference

The World Bank Group is working closely with developing countries to support them as they implement the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA), an accord that contains provisions for expediting the movement, release and clearance of goods across different nations. The World Trade Organisation, which is spearheading the Agreement, has found that full TF implementation promises global welfare gains of around $210 billion (Sh21 trillion) per year. At the World Trade Organisation’s 10th Ministerial Conference, the world came closer to ratification of the WTO’s Trade Agreement, a conformity that could help lower trade costs and ease customs cooperation for member countries, generating more trade and investment globally. Six countries, including Myanmar, Norway, Vietnam, Brunei, Zambia and Ukraine, signed the agreement bringing the total to 63 of 110 ratifications required. WTO members concluded their Tenth Ministerial Conference in Nairobi (MC10), held from December 15 to 19, 2015 by securing an historic agreement dubbed the “Nairobi Package” on a series of trade initiatives. According to a World Bank report, the Nairobi Package contains a series of six Ministerial Decisions on agriculture and issues related to least-developed countries. These include a commitment to abolish export subsidies for farm exports, which WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo hailed as the

World Trade Organisation Director-General Roberto Azevedo and Chair of the 10th WTO Ministerial Conference and Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed in Nairobi. “most significant outcome on agriculture” in the organisation’s 20-year history. The other agricultural decisions cover public stockholding for food security purposes, a special safeguard mechanism for developing countries, and measures related to cotton. Decisions were also made regarding preferential treatment for least developed countries (LDCs) in the area of services and the criteria for determining whether exports from LDCs may benefit from trade preferences. The Conference was the first such

meeting hosted by an African nation and was chaired by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amina Mohamed. Through its $36 million (Sh3.6 billion) Trade Facilitation Support Program (TFSP), the World Bank Group (WBG) is working with 47 of the countries that have ratified the TFA, on its implementation. Developed in December 2014, the support program is helping poorer countries meet the logistical and administrative burdens imposed by the TFA so that they can benefit from the agreement and expand

CA orders mobile service firms to procure SIMBOX detector Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has requested mobile phone service providers to acquire a SIM box detection tool capable of identifying and illegally directing international calls as local calls. CA Director General Francis Wangusi has requested providers to disconnect any SIM cards used for SIM boxing activities with immediate effect. The CA’s directive is due to the rise in cases of sim box fraud within the country which is not only causing a threat to the nation but also resulting in huge profits among the culprits in a fraudulent ways. On Wednesday, police raided an illegal sim box communication system in Lavington and arrested one person just a month after a similar case at 680 hotel in Nairobi. The fairly-new form of high-tech crime involves the use of sim boxes that hold up to 36 sim cards at a time and can simultaneously

make calls. Persons involved in this crime route incoming international calls to appear as local calls and cash in on the amount foreign mobile service providers pay them for the calls in the country to the disadvantage of local mobile operators. Addressing the issue, CA has made it obligatory for all mobile phone service providers to secure their network of such illegal activities as well as disconnecting the sim cards of culprits. Furthermore, the CA is planning to purchase relevant equipment that will pinpoint specific locations for SIM boxing activities. Wangusi says penalties for such a crime are too kind and need to be reviewed for persons making up to Sh38 million a month from illegal communications. He says Simbox connections are to a certain extent contributing to the persistent poor quality of voice services in the country and poses major security concerns.

their participation in global trade. Recent World Bank Group research suggests that full implementation of the TFA promises global welfare gains of around $210 billion per year, with the benefits flowing disproportionally to developing countries. WBG Trade and Competitiveness (T&C) Senior Director, Anabel Gonzalez led the Bank Group’s delegation at the MC10, reaffirming the Group’s support for the multilateral trading system and its strong relevance for the prospects of developing countries.

Conference tourism untapped potential for sector Kenya’s tourism sector is experiencing a phenomenon where business travelers are moving across countries for conferences, indicating that there may be an underserviced segment within the industry. This phenomenon, called conference tourism, is quickly becoming a huge part of business for companies like Jovago.com, a hotel-booking website. Conference tourism revolves around service provision to business travellers attending seminars, workshops, conferences and conventions. It is the largest and fastest growing segment of the modern tourism sector. New research indicates that it has a higher financial impact because business travellers spend more than their leisure counterparts. Often, their expenses are paid by the organisations they represent, leaving the tourists with substantial disposable incomes to spend. With the rehabilitation of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in 2004. KICC has played a crucial role in the business as it hosts many international meetings. It has been re-admitted to the prestigious International Congress and Convention Centre and this has helped raise the number of international conferences. Rapid modernization and aggressive marketing has made KICC the nectar that attracts bees to the honey that is Kenya’s tourism. Other conference facilities include the UN office in Nairobi and many other hotels and resorts throughout the country. They offer corporate rates and discounts and have modern and efficient business centres equipped with computers, telecommunication and Internet services. “One of the key ingredients for any successful conference is location,” says a report from Jovago.

SA ends chicken importation stalemate with United States The republic of South Africa has resolved a trade row with the United States which threatened millions of dollars worth of business, its trade minister has said. The United States government had said it would throw South Africa out of its preferential trade programme over its refusal to allow the importation of American chickens. US President Barrack Obama had set the end of 2015 as the deadline to resolve the dispute. Consequently, last-minute negotiations which dealt with South African health concerns ended the row. For more than a decade, South Africa - like several other African countries has enjoyed preferential trading status with the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).

It is estimated that the trade with the US is worth more than $170m (£117m) a year to South African farmers exporting citrus fruits, wine and nuts. Republic of South Africa’s Trade Minister Rob Davies said, when announcing that a deal had been struck, that 32,000 jobs depended on Agoa. The US had been upset earlier that South Africa was imposing what it deemed as unfair restrictions on the import of American chickens over worries about avian flu and salmonella. Mr. Davies however said he had received assurances from the US authorities over the safety of their meat exports and added that rigorous safety checks would now be carried out.

Great relief for suppliers as Tuskys signs deal with KCB Tuskys Supermarket has entered into a financing facility deal with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) that will see suppliers get payment before their invoices are due. The financing deal dubbed ‘Biashara Club’ will also see small and medium sized companies (SMEs) that supply the retail chain get loans from the bank at a preferential rate. Tuskys chief executive Dan Githua said the financing partnership will in the long run have positive ripple effects to boost its trading activities. “We are hopeful that in the long run the ripple effect will be that more employment opportunities will be created coupled with increased trading,” said Githua. KCB is the second bank to enter into such a partnership with the retail chain, which also signed a similar deal with Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) in early December last year. The new financing arrangement was launched a month ago and since then Tuskys says they have brought on board 100 SMEs, with a target of 600 by the end of the year. Tuskys, the second largest retailer in the country by revenue, has more than 1,600 SME suppliers who deliver goods worth between Sh500, 000 to Sh5 million every month. The signing also comes in the wake of a drive by leading supermarket chains to implement the signed agreement between them and the Kenya Manufacturers Association (KMA) September last year. Kenyan manufacturers in September wrote to

the leading supermarkets; Nakumatt, Tuskys and Naivasseeking a meeting to resolve the issue of delayed payments, which they said was squeezing their working capital.

The leading retail chains were entangled in a multi-billion shilling debt row with suppliers who accused them of refusing to pay for goods delivered to their stores.

Tuskys chief executive Dan Githua is optimistic the pact will bear fruit in the long run.

happening at a trade show. “We have design and utility patents that cover our invention,” Future Motion’s founder Kyle Doerksen told the BBC. “When we got word that a company was exhibiting a knock-off product, we engaged in the formal process, which involved sending a cease and desist letter and then getting a restraining order, which was then enforced by the US marshals. “As a company that launched ourselves at CES two years ago, we know that the world is watching, we knew that this was a situation where they could do real damage to our business if we just allowed them to violate our patents.” According to Future Motion’s lawyer Shawn Kolitch, Punitive measures could

include a permanent injunction preventing Changzhou from selling the product in the US, monetary damages including lost profits we can prove due to infringing sales, and even attorney’s fees if the court decides it’s an exceptionally egregious case of wilful patent infringement. He added that Future Motion had patents pending elsewhere including in China, which it hoped to obtain in order to stop Changzhou manufacturing the device. This is not the first controversy hoverboards have faced at CES. Ahead of the event starting, its organiser announced that attendees were banned from using any type of the vehicles to get about its showfloors.

Tea farmers’ poll free, fair despite complaints

Tea farmers who market their produce through the Kenya Tea Development Agency have elected their regional representatives for the 66 tea factories. KTDA Group Company Secretary John Kennedy Omanga termed the polls held on Tuesday as free and fair as a Bodaboda rider won the elections. The elections saw a Bodaboda rider gurning 21,564 votes beating his competitor Githambo and the former Tea Factory Chairman Antony Gatimu in Tuesday’s rotational polls.

BIZ BRIEFS Kiamburu Dam raises risk of malaria epidemic Kiamburu Dam has raised the risk of contracting malaria in the Embu area, new research has revealed. The dam provides an ideal breeding environment for the Anopheles mosquito, which carries the malaria parasite, putting local farmers and their families at risk of infection. Bed nets to keep off the insects while sleeping are a must in the mud and tin-roofed houses that dot the landscape, the Thomson Reuters Foundation reports. While Kenya’s hydropower dams like the Kiamburu facility, benefit communities living on their banks by providing a plentiful source of water to irrigate crops, they also run the risk of harbouring deadly mosquitoes. African governments and the World Bank argue the continent needs hydropower dams to boost inadequate electricity supplies with a clean, renewable source of energy.

‘Netflix not a big threat to local service providers’

Hoverboard booth raided over patent complaint US marshals have raided a Chinese hoverboard-maker’s stand at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. The officials confiscated all the company’s one-wheeled vehicles and took down its signs after a Silicon Valley-based rival filed a patent infringement claim. The case is set to return to court in a week’s time. However, the Chinese firm, Changzhou First International Trade, has declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the US Department of Justice told the BBC: “A court order has been served in a civil case involving private litigation.” She added that while it was not uncommon for the US marshals to be involved in such an action, she could not recall another case

Results of the eagerly awaited elections from the 223 polling stations countrywide were announced on the same day at the corresponding electoral areas once tallying of ballots was completed. In accordance to the results released by the KTDA Agency, 37 candidates were elected unopposed in various regions, a further 27 candidates were newly elected whereas 45 candidates were re-elected where more than 150,000 shareholders countrywide went into the polls.

Omanga said shareholders represent small scale tea farmers elect one-third of Factory Company directors who retire on rotation each year and are subject to the nomination process according to their Company articles. However, a number of farmers allied to Nyansiogo tea factory, a policy used by KTDA that allowed shareholders use share amid voting of regional directors has come under immense criticism. Led by Kennedy Ombori, the group said the policy favoured

few people with money who easily compromised farmers with majority of shares voting them in. The elections come at a time when tea farmers enjoyed high earnings in 2015, with tea bonus payments rising 21 per cent compared to what was issued in 2014. These annual polls play a significant role in the corporate governance process at the KTDAmanaged factories that require to elect their representatives as specified under company law.

No such thing as a safe level of drinking: Experts

Chief medical officers in the UK have issued tough new guidelines on alcohol consumption, cutting recommended drinking limits and stating that there is no such thing as a safe level of drinking. The UK’s chief medical officers say new research shows any amount of alcohol can increase the risk of cancer. The new advice says men and women who drink regularly should consume no more than 14 units a week - equivalent to six pints of beer or seven glasses of wine, the BBC reports. It reaffirms the tenet that pregnant women should not drink at all. It also says if people drink, it should be moderately over three or more days and that some days should be alcohol-free. The guidance marks the first full review of alcohol guidelines since 1995, although updated advice on drinking in pregnancy and for young people was published in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

Nigeria applauded for fighting graft as Kenya steps up efforts

WEEKEND EDITION, DECEMBER 8-10, 2016

Uchumi deals with bankruptcy in Uganda Uchumi supermarket has filed for bankruptcy in Uganda two months after shutting down its cross-border operations. The retail chain has petitioned the High Court in Kampala to wind up Uchumi Supermarkets (U) Ltd, its wholly-owned subsidiary, after multiple creditors secured orders seeking to attach its properties. The decision to take the bankruptcy route is meant to safeguard its remaining assets from creditors even as it makes a return to the foreign markets more difficult. Gad Ouma, a commercial lawyer, said bankruptcy proceedings are a messy affair given that creditors are paid in order of merit – starting with secured creditors like bank loans attached to assets - meaning some are likely not to be paid. “The reality is that it leads to creditors fighting against each other. The small creditors are exposed and may have to write off the debts, which is a big blow to them,” said Mr Ouma, an attorney at Robson Harris Advocates. Those seeking to recover their dues from Uchumi include suppliers, landlords and 900 employees seeking terminal dues after they were rendered jobless. Julius Kipng’etich - who was hired in August as Uchumi CEO to turn around the fortunes of the struggling retailer – defended the bankruptcy route, saying it does not prejudice the retailer’s future return to the regional market.

Nigeria has been lauded for its efforts in the country’s fight against corruption as Kenya steps up its efforts to do the same. The International Monetary Fund has said both nations deserve acclaim in their drive to rid their borders of fraud, the misappropriation of public funds and other vices. Kenya, often touted as East Africa’s powerhouse, recently hosted US President Barack Obama, who also

praised the government for moving against corruption. President Obama said it was a welcome move for Uhuru President Kenyatta to emphasize the Kenyan government’s stepped-up anticorruption efforts. The US Head of State referred to public corruption as one of the biggest impediments to Kenya’s economic growth. Nigeria has made similar moves, gaining praise from the IMF as well. IMF Managing Director Christine

Lagarde, who was speaking at the conclusion of a visit to Nigeria, said the fund is making moves to support development in the region. The IMF has already embarked on similar projects in sub-Saharan Africa with Kenya set to receive billions of shillings in funding from the group. “Nigeria is the largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the largest population, and its important role at the regional level has become

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

increasingly recognised,” Lagarde said in a recently-released statement. “The economy is well diversified, no longer dominated by agriculture and oil, with services accounting for almost half of GDP, including a significant home-grown film industry and innovative startups from fashion to software development. Nigeria has also experienced a decade of strong growth, averaging 6.8 percent a year. 1n 2015, however, growth is expected to slow to about 3 1/4 percent, with a slight recovery in 2016,” she added. In her meetings with Nigerian authorities, Largade discussed how to maintain economic progress while making the transition towards more inclusive and sustainable growth in the region. The IMF has since said poverty, inequality, and unemployment levels in Nigeria and Africa at large remain too high. IMF authorities and Nigeria’s state officials discussed a range of policy recommendations related to improving the competitiveness of the Nigerian economy, includeing focusing on the country’s infrastructure, where power, transportation, and housing are especially key. Similar discussions have been had in Kenya, which seeks to maintain its standing as one of the strongest economies in the continent.

UK Co-operative Group Apple bags Sh56bn from Samsung over row now faces accusation

The Co-operative Group, a leading British consumer services organisation, is facing allegations of corporate malpractice in an employment tribunal brought by its former procurement director. Former employee, Kath Harmeston, claims she was unfairly sacked in 2014 after reporting what she believed was criminal conduct and is seeking more than Sh 748 million ($7.32m) in damages. However, Co-op said Ms Harmeston was sacked because her behaviour was not keeping with her role. The group announced a return to profit last April after a turbulent period. Ms Harmeston, who now holds a senior position at the Ministry of Defence, claims she was unfairly sacked for blowing the whistle on what she believed to be the unlawful, corrupt and irregular use of members’ money, and the commission of

criminal offences. The details of her allegations will become known over the course of the tribunal, which starts in Manchester on Thursday and is expected to last two weeks. Senior Co-op bosses, including group chief executive Richard Pennycook and chief operating officer Pippa Wicks, are expected to justify. “We intend to fully and robustly defend our decision to dismiss Kath Harmeston at the upcoming tribunal’’ Co-op Group chairman Allan Leighton said. “We dismissed her because she acted in a manner which was not in keeping with the importance and seniority of her role, nor the values and principles of the Co-op.” In 2014, a review of the Co-op Group by former board member Lord Myners said the organisation should adopt a much smaller board and focus on being profitable in order to survive.

South Korean Electronics giant Samsung has agreed to pay Apple $548m (Sh56 billion) as part of a deal to settle a long-running patent dispute. The arrangement was revealed in papers filed to a California court by both companies yesterday. The dispute began in 2011 when Apple said Samsung was using some of its patented technologies without express permission. The payment does not mean the end of the row as, next year, a US court will decide if Apple deserves more damages. A joint case management statement filed to the California court revealed that Samsung had agreed to pay Apple within 10 days of receiving an invoice. The payment is part of a bigger $1bn damages award that Apple was granted in 2012 by a jury that considered the case. That total was reduced on appeal to $930m. Further legal action split this total into two parts - a $548m chunk for technology patents and a $382m chunk for allegations that Samsung copied Apple’s packaging materials. A jury is due to decide on the second damages award. Despite agreeing to pay the first part of the settlement, Samsung said it reserved the right

to get its money back if there were further developments in the case. The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is currently reviewing some of the patents Apple used in the court case. In a statement, Samsung said: “While we’ve agreed to pay Apple, we remain confident that our products do not infringe on Apple’s design patents, and we will continue to take all appropriate measures within the legal system to protect our products and our intellectual property.” Apple has however disputed Samsung’s right to a refund if the

patents are ruled invalid. One of the patents in the case, covering ways to add the “pinch to zoom” feature to smartphones, has already been ruled invalid by the USPTO. Apple is appealing against this decision. Soon after the USPTO made the decision to invalidate the pinch patent, Samsung lodged a call to review the entire case with the US appeals court. This call was rejected. The continuing uncertainty about the validity of some Apple patents and Samsung’s plans to file fresh appeals means the case was a long way from reaching resolution.

especially for loved ones. Given that you have interviewed many personalities on air, what lessons are there to learn? Hahaha…I have noted that there are two kinds of celebrities, those that create an image and run with it and those that are focused. Content is king. What is your opinion of the Kenyan ladies? Kenyan ladies are awesome; they are beautiful and come with a variety of influence. There are those who value family life, other value education, but all of them are very beautiful. You have said Kenyan ladies are beautiful should we expect a wedding any time soon? Hahahaha…Not now. What are your expectations for 2016? It all about growth and to do what you do best and remember don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

ow does it feel to be on Television? It is work. I enjoy interacting with people. I consider myself a people’s person and I like interacting with my audience. I am loving it so far. What does it take to be on television? Personally, I went for an audition and gave it my best. But once you are there you need to be ready to learn, be yourself and keep time. What is your opinion of the Television industry? The industry has grown, massively and there is room for more content. The digital platform has also tremendously changed the industry creating a niche for different content. There is a lot of potential for further growth. What challenges do you face? Remaining discrete is quite a challenge. You have to be ready to share your life with your audience not only on television but also on the streets of Nairobi. It can be difficult at times

At Grillan, located along Mombasa road just behind Airtel, a light meal of chicken, beef or combined chicken and beef Shawarma to go or to eat on the spot is quite a kick. But if chicken and beef

shawarmas aren’t tantalizing enough, how about a beef Kebab plate, or Falafel? Falafel are deep-fried balls or pie made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both and it is traditionally a Middle Eastern dish. If you are not convinced yet, you are welcome to sample Shish Tawook. A traditional shallow fried chicken marinated with lemon juice, vegetable oil, plain yogurt, garlic and tomato paste. Also

the chef says a little salt, pepper, and cinnamon are in the mix. If chicken and beef will not be quite tantalizing, you have the option of Tuna or a Margherita Pizza. YOURSAY Move to provide TB response drugs timely The pledge by Health ministry to bring in emergency supplies of Tuberculosis (TB) drugs in the country is a step in the right direction in the promoting better health services. This will help protect the vulnerable children and expectant mothers from contracting the killer disease. Although much progress has been made in the last decade, Kenya is lagging behind the standards set by the UN on

child mortality and any factor that increases the risk of infection in infants ought to be treated as an emergency as the ministry has done. The ministry and county governments should adopt pro-active measures to improve the quality of health care in public hospitals and reduce the increasing number of industrial actions by nurses. Better mechanisms should be sought to fight other killer

diseases such as malaria that majorly affects infants below the age of five years and expectant mothers. It is also a positive change in the ministry that has been slow in acknowledging the challenges facing public health services but in recent times, there appears to be new-found political will to address problems as and when they arise. — Nderitu, Baba Dogo

Scribe sack over editorial content threat to media The suspension of Denis Galava, the Managing Editor for Special Projects at Nation should worry all members of the fourth estate and Kenyans at large. Editorial of any media house is important and always supreme therefore the government should not try to twist it in their favour. When the government forces a media house to suspend an editor because the editorial content criticises the President, then the role of the media as a watchdog role is under threat. The suspension comes just

hours after Senator Murkomen said editorial published on Saturday was sponsored and written by the same person who wrote Raila Odinga’s state of the nation speech. The media in their editorial should state facts as they are and no amount of threats nor threats from the government should force them to change on that. Galava’s boldness confirms that indeed the problem of biasness in media is not about bad journalists, but the environment. — Otieno Nyakrathia, South C

Too much politicking not good for country’s growth The constant bickering between the ruling Jubilee Alliance and the opposition Cord is unhealthy especially at the beginning of the year when Kenyans expect a lot from the leaders. It is worrying that after only one week into the New Year, the country is already charged politically a clear indication that the current crop of

leaders care less about the affairs of the public. At this time of year, the public expected the government to lay ground for economic projects that would in turn create jobs for the thousands of jobless youth in the country. The tendency of the government playing to the whims of the Opposition all the time has boring.

The government should concentrate in serving the public and not engaging the opposition in public spat all the time. The electorate are watching and with only 18 months to the next poll, I hope fellow Kenyans will make the right decision. — Bukende Steve, Embakasi

Eurobond proceeds could be funding harambees The resurgence of harambees by Jubilee politicians led by Deputy President William Ruto could be one of the causes of rampant corruption allegations against Jubilee administration. The harambees in most cases used as political tools to appease the electorate and for public relations purposes and not for development. From history, during retired president Moi’s era, this kind of fundraising were used as an avenue to loot public coffers by rogue directors of parastatals in the guise of aiding the then president in his harambees. Many institutions and parastatals such as the

Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC), Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), The Webuye paper millers and the Kenya Coffee Planters Union (KPCU) among others collapsed after directors raided them to get money to spend in harambees. In my view, cash currently dished out every weekend in harambees could be coming from over Sh700 million stolen from the National Youth Service (NYS) and the Eurobond proceeds. These fundraising should be stopped and the source of the funds audited. If a politician or a government figure has to donate funds, they should fund ongoing projects. — Kamotho, Mathare

Ruto should not contest in 2022 after DP post Since President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto came up with a joint manifesto, why does Ruto need to become a president? What is it that he wants to do in 2022 that he cannot do now? Or has Uhuru denied him a chance to do the miracles he claims he will perform in 2022? I have always said that if at any one point you have had the word “President” anywhere in your title (either as Vice, Acting, Deputy or Retired President), or you were an equal partner to a President, you don’t need to be elected full president for you to perform

miracles. What is it that you did not accomplish as VP Kalonzo, DP Ruto or PM Raila, that you hope to achieve as President? This to me is personal greed and must not be tolerated by common citizens. A country of +40 million Kenyans is too big for the Presidency to be played like a bean-bag by a few individuals. I feel insulted whenever someone claims that after Uhuru, Ruto or Raila should replace him. Are we deficient of other capable and deserving Kenyans? Let Ruto, Raila and Kalonzo leave us in peace. — Hilary, Dagoreti

Gusii leaders free to engage Ruto for sake of projects The delegation from Gusii region visiting Deputy President William Ruto at his Sugoi home should not be construed because what all regions want is development and therefore leaders have a right to seek the same from whichever corner regardless of party affiliation. It goes without saying that most voters of the larger Kisii voted for the opposition, but leaders must seek the National government help to realise deelopment in the region. It would be wrong to fault the Chairman of Deputy Governors Hon Joash Maangi for having taken Gusii to the National government

for other ventures. In fact, we should thank Maangi for his fruitless efforts to ensure Kisii County as a region is developed through his persistent urges to the National government to ensure we receive the national cake. We should learn to separate development from politics. ODM politics should be separated from development and we must demand for our share of the national cake despite the Governor being elected in an ODM ticket. I salute Maangi for linking the larger Gusii region with the National government. — Megeka, Donholm

Give me two more slots, Munala pleads with KVF WEEKEND EDITION, DECEMBER 8-10, 2016

National women’s volleyball head coach Japheth Munala has appealed to Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) to spare him extra two slots for liberos in the forthcoming Continental qualifiers set for next month in Cameroon. Kenya will be seeking her first Olympic qualification since Sydney 2004 in the single slot qualification set to serve off on February 12 in Yaounde, Cameroon. The libero position is one of the most competitive slot in the 12 member squad to be released early next month after the arrival of foreign legion of Mercy Moim (Finland) and French-based trio of Everlyn Makuto, Jane Wacu and Esther Wangeci. The position has Kenya Prisons and most experienced of the three, Elizabeth Wanyama, Kenya Pipeline’s Agripina Kundu and Everlyn Mbone of Nairobi water. This means two of them will have to be dropped should KVF give out air tickets for 12. According to new FIVB rule, a team can carry up to 14 players and it this new provision that Munala want to utilise to

strengthen his reception. “I would be the happiest man if I get the additional slots,” Munala said on the side-lines of the team’s training at Kasarani on Thursday. The two times national champion winning coach is upbeat Kenya will grab the single ticket to Rio Olympic though he’s yet to have a full house. Kenya Prisons recruits Joy Lusenaka (setter), Edith Wisa (Centers), Ann Lowen and Emmaculate Chemutai (right) are yet to report to camp.

“They are supposed to be released either today or tomorrow,” confirmed Munala. The squad will be trimmed before final whittling in the first week of February. David Lung’aho, KVF technical Director has however predicted a tough tournament, singling out host Cameroon and North Africa nations as the main threats. “The qualifiers are going to be tough, “said Lung’aho who guided Kenya to her first international

trophy last June at the World grand Prix in Australia. “Everybody has been preparing for the Olympics qualifiers. Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt will provide tough opposition,” added the Kenya Prisons head coach. “Cameroon is also a threat, but the fact that they’ll be hosting these games for the first time may work against them. They may have pressure from home fans,” observed Lung’aho who has been nominated for the third time for SOYA coach of the year.

Paraguay Police raid South America football offices State prosecutors in Paraguay have raided the headquarters of Conmebol, South America’s football confederation, near the capital Asuncion. The move was part of US-led investigations into corruption at Fifa, world football’s governing body. Last month, the president of Conmebol, the Paraguayan Juan Angel Napout, was extradited to the United States to face charges. He pleaded not guilty to taking millions of dollars in bribes. Paraguay’s state prosecution service said in a statement it was searching for documentation related to the granting of commercial and broadcast rights for sporting events”. “It is very strange. We have been cooperating with the judicial authorities of the United States, Uruguay and Paraguay,’ a lawyer for the confederation, Alfredo Montanaro condemned the raid. Napout, 57,former Fifa vice-president was arrested in a dawn raid on a luxury hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, on December 3. He is accused of taking bribes worth millions of dollars linked to the sale of marketing rights to South American tournaments. He resigned as Conmebol president on 11 December following his arrest and is currently banned from football.

Prolific striker Kagere finally leaves K’Ogalo Sportpesa Premier League Champion Gor Mahia has finally parted ways with prolific striker Meddie Kagere. Kagere, who scored 13 goals for K’Ogalo last season left the club after he failed to agree on new terms with the club. His departure will be a blow to the club who will also be involved in continental assignment. As early as late last month, there were signs that Kagere will not be returning to K’Ogalo after Gor omitted his name for CAF list, sent on the final day, December 30.

According to Gor, the Rwandan made high demands though sources close to the player says that he was disappointed with Kenyan league after his effort was never recognised during the SportPesa/ SJAK Footballer of the Year AwardsFOYA held last month. Kagere played an integral part in the in Gor’s unbeaten run in the league besides guiding them to a Top 8 and DStv Cup. “We have tried our best to negotiate with Meddie, but it’s quite unfortunate we will not be able to renew his contract because we can’t meet his demands,” club

chairman, Ambrose Rachier was quoted on the club website. Kagere arrived at the club in 2015 on a one year contract. Gor has, however signed midfielder Francis Kahata, goalkeeper Gradus Ochieng from City Stars, defender Erick Ouma from Kakamega High School and academy lad Amos Nondi, who was promoted from the youth team. Nondi, however, boast of some league experience having spent a season on loan at Sony Sugar.

ON THE MOVE: Former Gor Mahia striker Meddie Kagere has finally left the club after they failed to agree on contract extension ahead of the new season. The club through chairman Ambrose Rachier has confirmed the news.

Koops re-appointed as Ingwe coach AFC Leopards has for the second time appointed Jan Koops as head coach ahead of the new season. Koops was confirmed as the new Ingwe coach, replacing Croatian Zdravko Logarusic who has since joined an Angolan side, Interclub. Loga, who is yet to tender his resignation at Leopards joined Interclube as an assistant coach. The Dutchman, Koops makes a return to the den and will be assisted by former

Administration Police coach Tom Juma. Juma will replace assistant coach Ezekiel Akwana, who joined the side mid last year as head coach after Logarusic went AWOL. Interestingly, Akwana was shown the door just hours after signing five new faces, including Ugandan Allan Kateregga. It however remain to be seen whether the new signings will be drafted into the plans of the new technical bench. Other faces that have joined the financially crippled Ingwe who is currently run by a

caretaker committee following the ruling by the Sports Dispute Tribunal late last month include Zachary Onyango, Charles Pilipili, Eugene Wambulwa and Ali Sitati Onyango would have easily fitted in Akwana’s plans had he stayed with the side having worked with him at Sofapaka before he joined relegated KCB. Pilipili crossed over from Posta Rangers while Sitati and Wambulwa left West Sugar for the Den.

Aubameyang voted best African player

BEST OF THE BEST: Gabon and Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who was voted African Footballer of the Year 2015. He beat closest rival to the award Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast and Man City (inset) by 143 to 136 votes.

Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang denied Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure a fifth Confederation of African Football’s player of the year award in a row. The Borussia Dortmund forward beat Manchester City midfield maestro by seven points to end his four year reign as Africa’s best footballer. In a vote of coaches and technical directors of Caf member nations, Aubameyang earned 143 points, with Toure, 32, coming second after garnering 136 points. The win made Aubameyang, 26, the first player from his country to win the award. Ghana and Swansea midfielder Andre Ayew, 26, was third with 112 points. The Gabon Captain is the Bundesliga’s leading scorer so far this season, with 18 goals in 17 league games though this achievement came despite going for a whole year without a trophy. Gabon was eliminated in the first round of the African Nations Cup held in Equatorial Guinea while Dortmund finished seventh in the Bundesliga last season. However, Aubameyang scored 29 Bundesliga goals in last year including 18 this season plus a further seven in the Europa League. He is the first Bundesliga-based player to win the annual award first introduced in 1970. Toure, who was recently voted BBC African Footballer of the Year 2015 led his country to the Africa Cup of Nations title in February. Herve Renard, who guided Ivory Coast to their Africa Cup of Nations victory, won the coach of the year award. The Frenchman, who also led Zambia to victory in the tournament in 2012, is the first person to coach two different countries to the title.
