The Nairobi death traps waiting to strike WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2016

“It is unfortunate that our work has mainly been concentrated in Nairobi county due to lack of resources, we need to cover the entire country,” National Construction Authority chairman Daniel Manduku told the Maina Kamanda led committee. Manduku said despite the authority alerting County officials of the looming danger, no action has been taken. “Buildings which are marked with an NCA mark of condemnation continue to house families who appear oblivious of the danger as county officials turn a blind eye to the dangers posed,” Manduku lamented. Transport CS James Macharia also blamed County governments for the collapse of buildings since they are the ones mandated to approve construction of houses. “The County governments are partly to blame for the increased cases of collapsing buildings, since they

A total of 640 residential houses in Nairobi are unsafe for human occupation and can collapse anytime, MPs have been told. Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure officials who appeared before the Parliamentary Transport Committee to shed light on the steps taken in the wake of increased cases of collapsing buildings across the country said the 640 buildings which are concentrated in low end areas of the city are on the verge of collapsing. The revelation means the lives of hundreds of tenants in Nairobi at now at a confirmed risk. Most of the buildings are marked with for demolition but people still occupy them despite the looming danger. ficials attributed lack resources to reign on rogue contractors and also conduct house inspection across the country saying at the moment they are only concentrated in Nairobi.

Mr Kamanda told the officials not complain all the time that their hands are tied while people continue to die across the country.

“You should not be coming here every time to tell us that your hands are tied while Kenyans continue to lose their lives. It’s high time you acted to bring them to book,” Kamanda said. From Page 1 Kenya has so far repatriated more than 16,000 refugees to Somalia, with many more still at the camp. Only last week, IGAD’s Special Envoy on Somalia Mohamed Affey said the closure of the camp may delay after some of the refugees declined to enlist themselves for the repatriation exercise. Affey said majority of the refugees have expressed skepticism and reluctance to go back to their country as they believe that their security will not be guaranteed as it is now in the camp. He painted a picture of a desperate population that is ready and willing to pay the price just to remain in the camp. “There are serious teething problems that the refugees need to be assured of before they are repatriated back to

Somali. They say the country is volatile and not safe for human inhabitation. All the respective agencies involved need to guarantee them of their security,” he told X-News in an interview. According to the former Wajir South MP, it would be difficult to convince the refugees to return home since the essential infrastructure is yet to be established in their mother country to facilitate a safe repatriation. “This voluntarily repatriation exercise has a long way to go but if serious consultations are made then then we expect change of attitude and acceptance from the refugees,” Ambassador Affey noted. Since the repatriation exercise was announced last year, tens of thousands of refugees have been making the journey back home after decades in the camp.

Rising Diabetes cases cause alarm Nearly 800,000 Kenyans have been diagnosed with diabetes with a high number of recent cases recorded among women. According to the ministry of health statistics 88 per cent of Kenyans have never had their blood sugar levels examined to detect if they are diabetic. Further it is estimated that the lifestyle disease is turning out to be a top killer in the country with 27 per cent of deaths recorded annually attributed to it. Head of non-communicable diseases Joseph Kibachio said that the trend is growing from bad to worse as young children are also getting diagnosed with the ailment unlike in the past where it was attributed to the aged. “This is expected to rise as more Kenyans are adopting unhealthy lifestyles. The number of children getting diagnosed is also worrying,” Dr Kibachio stated. He made the revelations during the sub-Saharan region and beyond to the 2016 world diabetes day forum held at Serena Hotel in Nairobi today. According to Dr Kibachio some of the unhealthy lifestyles include consumption of unhealthy diet and reduced physical activity due to over reliance on motorized transport, tobacco use and harmful consumption of alcohol. He however maintained that the government was committed to address the challenge more fundamentally by reducing the cost of insulin and ensuring its availability across all health facilities. “The ministry has continued to pursue all avenues to ensure all are treated and have access to insulin. It is our mandate to lay emphasis to all our county hospitals to stock insulin,” he added. @wilson_x254

Family Bank now wants a thorough investigation to be carried out in all banks that allegedly handled the National Youth Service (NYS) money which is being probed by the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee. The bank’s board of directors chairman Wilfred Kiboro made the call hours after the committee invited the Banking Fraud Unit and Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the theft of Sh1.6 billion suspected to have been looted from NYS. The move came after PAC said they got fresh details linking 17 more banks to the payments. Mr Kiboro said a thorough probe into the matter would allay any fears in the financial institution. He held that since the launch of investigations into the loss of the millions at the youth agency, his bank has cooperated fully and have already taken steps to kick out its staff that were adversely mentioned in the theft. “If indeed there were other banks involved in the money laundering at the NYS, we hope the investigations will also cover them fully like they have done with Family bank, so that we can get to the bottom of this issue and know what the truth is. The NYS matter is very serious,” Mr. Kiboro told journalists in Nairobi yesterday. He also reassured Family bank that the financial institution is stable and that they should ignore ‘rumours’ on social media asking clients to withdraw their monies. @hillary_x254

Police finally arrest Nairobi politician in hate talk charge

Police have arrested a city political aspirant who was being sought over a viral video in which he vowed to cause violence if opposition chief Raila Odinga loses next year’s presidential election. Jim Ayungo, a former Youth Enterprise Fund director, who is eyeing the Ruaraka parliamentary seat was arrested yesterday afternoon and taken to the CID headquarters for questioning. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet ordered him to present himself to the nearest police station on Monday, following the weekend remarks that have been categorised as hate speech. “This time we are not going to spare anybody… no one anyone at all,” the IG said after confirming his arrest. “If you engage in hate speech, get ready to face the Court.” He said no political leader would be spared if found guilty of engaging in the vice. Already the Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisserry has affirmed the IG’s sentiments, warning politicians of dire consequences if they are found making inflammatory remarks which can ignite violence in the country. The two said adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure Kenya remains secure as it prepares to go to elections in August next year. “We are not going to tolerate hatemongers. Our appeal to the Judiciary is that they recommend hefty fines against the culprits,” he said. www.capitalfm.co.ke

Germany’s Angela Merkel to seek fourth term in office German Chancellor Angela Merkel will run for a fourth term in elections next year, a senior politician in her party told CNN on Tuesday. “She will run for Chancellor,” Norbert Roettgen of the Christian Democratic Union said on CNN’s “Amanpour.” “She is absolutely determined, willing, and ready to contribute to strengthen the international liberal order. But we can’t see the Chancellor or Germany as last man standing.” Germans have been waiting for months for clarity on whether Merkel will pursue a fourth term in next year’s elections. Another stint would be significant because a large part of the German electorate is looking for stability in uncertain times after the Brexit vote in Britain, the election of Donald Trump in the United States and the rise of populist movements in several European countries. If she pursues the position, she’ll be the favorite to win, political experts say, even though she is facing some backlash over Germany’s refugee policies and the acceptance of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing Syria, Afghanistan and other nations. Christian Democratic Union spokesman Jochen Blind said Merkel “will announce her decision in due time.” On the Amanpour. program, Roettgen was asked whether Merkel was willing and desirous of “holding the liberal order, in the trans-Atlantic area, together.” “The Chancellor is a cornerstone of this political concept of the West as acting as a global player. So she will run, and she will act as a responsible leader,” Roettgen said. “But it would be impossible to rely only on one person. We need the West, and the West is indispensable. “And this of course means fundamentally and indispensably also the participation and contribution of the strongest part of the West, and this is the United States of America.” Speaking after Trump’s victory last week, Merkel laid out some ground rules, of sorts, for the incoming American leader. “Germany and the United States,” she said, “are joined by common values; democracy, freedom, respect for the law and human dignity, regardless of skin color, religion,

gender, sexual orientation or political beliefs. “Based on these values, I offer close cooperation to the future president of the United States of America, Donald Trump.” In Berlin two months ago, Merkel’s party was knocked out of a ruling coalition with the center-left Social Democrats after winning just 17.6% of the vote. Anti-immigrant party Alternative for Germany entered Berlin’s state parliament for the first time after winning 14.2% of the vote. The Berlin result marked the second recent defeat for Merkel since Germany adopted its open-door refugee policy. But nationally she is seen as a bulwark against populism and stands for an analytical, unemotional and stable style of politics. Merkel has acknowledged she has made mistakes with the controversial refugee policy. “If I could, I would play back time so I and

the German federal government and leaders could have been better prepared,” she said. Merkel, 62, is the daughter of a Protestant minister and was brought up in communist East Germany. She entered Germany’s parliament in the first post-unification election, serving in ministerial posts and as the leader of the opposition before she was finally elected Chancellor in 2005. She became the country’s first female leader. She was re-elected Chancellor in 2009 and 2013. Merkel has been a leading figure in the fight against the region’s financial crisis. She has blocked bailouts, rejected proposals, denied pleas and stood up to the rest of Europe. While citizens in France, Spain, Italy and Greece voted out her counterparts, Merkel has been re-elected with one of the strongest mandates in the history of modern Germany.

Nigeria corruption cash ‘took 10 days to count’ A bank manager has told how two aeroplanes full of banknotes were used in a cash exchange being investigated in a major Nigerian corruption case. The quantity of cash, totaling 1.2bn naira ($3.8m; about Sh380 million), was so great that it took 10 days to count it, Sunday Oluseye told the court in Abuja. His testimony forms part of a case linked to a multi-billion dollar corruption scandal. President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to tackle corruption.

“I got worried when I saw the huge amount of money conveyed by the aircrafts that day,” Mr Oluseye told the court, in comments reported by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a government anti-corruption body. He told the court that most of the money was in 500 and 1,000 naira notes. The evidence was given as part of a moneylaundering case brought by the EFCC against Abiodun Agbele, whom the body names as a close ally of the governor of Ekiti

State, Ayodele Fayose. The EFCC says the case is linked to a wider investigation into Nigeria’s former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki, who has been charged for an alleged multi-million dollar fraud in which government funds earmarked to fight Boko Haram were stolen. Mr Dasuki and Mr Agbele both deny the charges. Corruption is endemic in Nigeria and so far the EFCC has only managed to secure a handful of convictions.

What Trump wants to do on his first day as President of USA

President-elect Donald Trump (pictured below) will begin the process of reshaping America’s trade policy on Day 1 of his administration, according to a memo drafted by his transition team obtained by CNN. The document lays out the skeleton of Trump’s trade policy for the first 200 days of his presidency, focusing on a set of principles including renegotiating or withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement -- a frequent promise Trump made on the campaign trail. The memo itself notes that plenty could change before Trump (pictured below) starts his presidency on January 20, 2017, calling the contents “for discussion purposes only.” But the draft memo reveals what the Trump transition team has developed as a blueprint for Trump’s administration based on its pre-election work and Trump’s own campaign promises. “The Trump trade plan breaks with the globalist wings of both the Republican and Democratic parties,” the document notes. “The Trump administration will reverse decades of conciliatory trade policy. New trade agreements will be negotiated that provide for the interests of US workers and companies first.” The 200-day plan is built around five main principles, plus an extra plank on manufacturing jobs. First is renegotiating or withdrawing from NAFTA, second is stopping the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, third is stopping “unfair imports,” fourth is ending “unfair trade practices,” and fifth is pursuing bilateral trade deals. The final focus, to “retain and return manufacturing jobs,” focuses on lowering the business tax rate and eliminating regulations on businesses and restrictions on domestic energy. The provisions on TPP are almost certainly moot, as congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle say the deal will not come up for ratification in the lame duck congressional session. Trump would then not need to take any action to kill it, because the deal would be effectively dead. The plan also gives benchmarks for Days 1, 100 and 200 of the Trump administration.

State forms task force in bid to lower cost of electricity tariffs Consumers are set to pay less for electricity after the Energy Ministry formed a task force to review a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between Kenya and power generators. The decision comes after the justconcluded State House Summit on Energy that saw President Uhuru Kenyatta order the review of agreements between the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and government to ascertain their cost of effectiveness. Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said the review by the task force will not be restricted to the existing PPA and that the team will work closely with investors to review the tariffs on the basis of the macro-economic changes which have taken place, as provided for in the PPA. “This review is not only confined to the existing PPAs, but will also include review of tariffs for on-going negotiations between Kenya Power and Lighting Company and all power plants including feed-in Tariffs projects, he said. The CS says that currently, close to 3600MW has been committed by IPPs and that the review by the task force will work to reduce the cost of tariffs. “It is recognized that because of technological advances and innovation, the cost of equipment for Feed-in Tariffs technologies have drastically reduced, and we intent to leverage on this positive change so that we can give Kenyans the best tariff,” the CS said. Keter said the Energy Ministry has

suspended further processing of Expressions of Interest under the FeedIn Tariffs policy. “In the meantime, while this review is ongoing, and until the task force finalizes its work, we have suspended further processing of expression of interest under the feed-in tariffs policy,”

he said. Reports indicate that the cost of power is still high for many consumers, despite the additional injection of cheaper geothermal power, even after the government spent billions of shillings in funding green energy projects. The task force, which has until

development in Africa. The world has witnessed an upsurge in impetus to address underdevelopment and improvement of the quality of life across the globe, and especially in Africa. The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, global commitments under the Financing for Development (FfD) Agenda 2030 and a report of the High Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa has given tax justice activists greater drive to demand concrete actions from the international community to combat illicit financial flows and support enhanced domestic resource mobilisation efforts. The High Level Panel report indicates that Africa loses up to $50 billion (Sh5 trillion) every year in illegal capital outflows, especially through the extractives

sector. These could be in form of profit-shifting, lack of transparency, financial secrecy, lack of clarity about beneficial ownership and inadequate reporting of payments. This means that valuable resources that governments would have used for the provision of basic infrastructure, healthcare and education are lost on a large scale, posing a greater challenge to Africa. By juxtaposing the campaign onto the students’ competition, young people get an opportunity to engage in relevant discussions as efforts orientate towards what needs to be done to finance Africa’s structural transformation. “This competition is set to open up avenues for youth engagement on public finance management and particularly on funds generated from taxation,” said Alvin Mosioma, Executive Director of TJN-A. @enock_x254

Airtel upgrades cash transfer system as firm doubles agent base Airtel Money, the mobile payment platform for leading telecommunications operator Airtel, has doubled its active agent base in Kenya to 22,000 from 10,000 in a bid to enhance customer reach and satisfaction. Fourth quarter sector statistics by the Communication Authority (CA) indicate that the mobile money transfer service recorded a 7 per cent growth in the number of subscriptions rising from 4,226,205 to 4,853,869 subscribers in the period between April and June 2016. The increase has been attributed to recent efforts by Airtel Kenya, through an expanded network of external partners who are specialists in acquiring, managing and maintaining mobile money agency networks. The overwhelming response saw over 140 applications received, 80 of whom fulfilled minimum requirements. From the 80, Airtel settled on 25 partners spread across Kenya, each with an assigned zone to recruit from. This strategy helped Airtel

to localize agent acquisition and expand faster in regions outside Nairobi. In a statement, Airtel Kenya CEO, Adil El Youssefi explained that the new push has enabled Airtel Money to achieve immense growth, ensuring that Kenyans across the country have access to agents that enable them to make transactions via their Airtel mobile phones. “In the era of financial inclusion through increased accessibility to mobile financial services, it is estimated that 32 per cent of adults are loyal to a particular mobile financial services agent. This increase in Airtel Money agents therefore is a step in the right direction to ensure that Airtel customers can now easily access our affordable and reliable Airtel Money services.” Adil added. The Airtel Money system was upgraded in September 2016, allowing customers to access real time payments processing services across multiple access channels. @enock_x254

Ministry seeks Sh325bn to maintain 4 major highways in toll station initiative WeDnesDaY, noVeMBer 16, 2016

The government is seeking investors to construct and maintain four roads at a cost Sh325 billion. Speaking during the Kenya Public Private Partnership Road Investor Conference Transport Principal Secretary John Musonik says the move is set to expand the road network in the country. “With about 160, 000 Kilometers of road, only 14, 000 are paved which amounts to 9 per cent, the government cannot do it alone that is why we are seeking the help of the private sector,” he told investors at the conference. Among the four roads include the maintenance of the Thika Super Highway, construction and maintenance of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, Nairobi – Mombasa Highway as well as the 600 metres Nyali Bridge. “Transport corridor implementation is

a top priority for the government and we are keen in investing in the sector,” he explained. Musonik says the roads will be maintained through tolling services that will be implemented in the next five years after the roads are complete. However, the tolling services for the southern bypass and the Thika Super Highway will be implemented in the next two years. Many motorists are however opposed to the use of toll stations. The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) says reintroducing the stations would amount to double taxation. “The government through the Kenya National Highways Authority, intends to reintroduce retrogressive, oppressive and unconstitutional toll. It is unjustifiable, unacceptable and absurd.

Putting toll booths on already complete roads is a big no and motorists will never allow that to happen,” Peter Murima, the Association’s Chairman said in a previous statement. The lobby group has turned down an invitation to attend a two-day investor conference in protest of the government’s intentions. The conference is expected to bring together government officials and private investors to discuss details of the planned tolling. A toll station, also known as a turnpike or tollway, is a public or private roadway for which a fee is assessed for passage. It is a form of road pricing typically

implemented to help recoup the cost of road construction and maintenance, which (on public roads) amounts to a form of taxation. Toll roads in some form have existed since antiquity, collecting their fees from passing travelers on foot, wagon or horseback; but their prominence increased with the rise of the automobile, and many modern tollways charge fees for motor vehicles exclusively. The amount of the toll usually varies by vehicle type or weight, with freight trucks often charged higher rates than cars. Tolls are collected at points known as toll booths, toll houses, plazas,

stations, bars, or gates. Some toll collection points are unmanned and the user deposits money in a machine which opens the gate once the correct toll has been paid. To cut costs and minimize time delay many tolls today are collected by some form of automatic or electronic toll collection equipment which communicates electronically with a toll payer’s transponder. Criticisms of toll stations include the time taken to stop and pay the toll, and the cost of the toll booth operators. However, automated toll paying systems help address both these concerns. @Dennis_x254

Geocycle unveils zero-residue waste management solution WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2016

Geocycle, a global waste management firm that is present in over 60 countries, has entered the Kenyan market with an objective of providing a solution to waste management that leaves no residue after disposal. With a capacity to incinerate 15,000 tons of waste annually, Geocycle intends to partner with local waste management firms, counties, industrial and agricultural sectors in its mission to ensure a zero-waste future for Kenya. The launch makes Geocycle the only waste management firm in the country to cater for the entire waste management processes from collection, transportation, segregation, auditing, as well as disposal, in a process that does not require waste to be disposed of in landfills. Speaking during the launch, Bamburi Cement Country CEO, Mr Bruno Pescheux noted that Geocycle will complement Kenya’s Vision 2030 initiative and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) guiding principle on Solid Waste Management Initiatives (SWMI), which calls for zero waste strategies to create wealth, employment and reduce environmental pollution. “The current waste management solutions focus on dumpsites, open burning and incineration of hazardous and medical waste. Such solutions do not result to zero waste and have adverse impact to the environment and society,” said Mr. Pescheux. Reports on waste management indicate that most county and domestic waste is disposed of in open dumpsites, with biomedical waste, condemned, damaged or expired goods incinerated largely through burners that do not meet the requirements stipulated the Third Schedule of the Waste Management Regulations of 2006. Kenya’s challenge in waste management

A man walks past garbage in a makeshift dumpsite in Nairobi. lies in the final disposal processes, as County Governments and waste management service providers do not provide the final disposal process, forcing them to dispose waste in landfills - such as the Dandora dumpsite. The partnership, which is in line with Bamburi Cement’s environmental sustainability goals, will also result in a reduction in the country’s carbon emission footprint, which is currently high due to, among other things, the open burning of waste from landfills and other undesignated dumping points.

It will also afford Bamburi Cement safer and cost effective energy for cement production. Due to the high cost of cement production, waste-derived fuel will provide a more economical and sustainable option compared to the use of fossil fuels. The launch of Geocycle makes Kenya among the first countries in Africa to benefit from international waste management standards that leaves no residue after disposal. “This approach to waste disposal via cement kilns is a progressive step that will help reduce landfills thus free more land for development. We also foresee reduction of the carbon

emission footprint in the country, as it is currently at an all-time high with the open burning of waste and emissions from landfill,” noted Simon Wathigo, Head of Geocycle Kenya. “We are in the process of stepping up on our Waste management actions in order to provide a one-stop-shop to our customers. The solution will collect and segregate waste into; recyclables to be used as raw material for other industries, organics which will be used to makes compost for the agricultural sector and combustibles, which can be used as fuel for industries,” Mr. Wathigo added. @enock_x254

UK-based Chartered PR Institute partners with Makini College to launch new courses in January Public relations practitioners in Kenya will now be able to undertake specialist public relations qualifications locally. International training provider, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR, UK) in conjunction with Makini College will offer a new and updated industry relevant CIPR course beginning January 2017. While presiding over the launch event, Dr. Bitange Ndemo, a Professor at the University of Nairobi, pointed to the importance of driving up standards of public relations in Kenya and expressed his support for having a local setup supported by the CIPR in UK. “The launch of CIPR qualifications is a real step forward for the industry

locally, making high quality PR education more accessible in the country. This is evidence of a paradigm shift in the thinking of local practitioners and the profession as whole as it moves towards higher standards of professionalism through international accreditation of practitioners,” he added. Introducing the Diploma locally eliminates the need for PR practitioners to undertake qualifications involving frequent travel to the UK or substantial amounts of distance learning, while according them the benefit to practice internationally once they meet the stipulated requirements. Speaking at the launch event, Joseph Okelo, Director of Makini College said:

“The Diploma is a great qualification. It’s hard work, but extremely rewarding and can transform your PR career from good to great. A CIPR Diploma graduate is a more strategic thinker and better equipped to make an impact at senior level in the workplace. It is for this reason that Makini College offers the course as a specialist course that differentiates itself from all other PR qualifications in the country.” Taught by a specialist team of tutors, trained and vetted by the CIPR in the UK, the course will be delivered over ten months and include three units of study. The first section focusses on equipping learners with the requisite skills to properly apply PR theory to practice. The second unit focusses on

strategy development and planning PR strategies that assure return on investment while the final unit details doing research in the field of communication. Established more than ten years ago in the United Kingdom, the CIPR Diploma is a Masters level qualification aimed at those who want to develop their practitioner skills but who also want to underpin what they do with theory. Diploma graduates have gone on to hold senior positions in organisations in the UK and abroad. Entry level courses, including the CIPR Foundation and Advanced Certificate, will also be delivered by Makini College in Nairobi. @kevin_x254

Rise of digital economy leading to widespread cases of cybercrime Two thirds of businesses across the continent have experienced multiple security breaches within the last 12 months, Liquid Telecom’s latest Cybersecurity & Data Protection Report has revealed. The report indicates that soaring internet use across the region and the rise of the continent’s digital economy has led to increasing cases of sophisticated cybercrime. “As digitalisation for both consumers and enterprises accelerates, the cost of data breaches is expected to increase to $2.1 trillion (Sh213.7 trillion) globally by 2019, increasing to almost four times the estimated cost of breaches in 2015,” reads the report. The analysis finds that 25 per cent of respondents believe the region is falling significantly behind in global standards while 40 per cent believe African businesses could be doing more to protect themselves from data breaches. The report also identified that the region could be facing a skills crisis given that over 60 per cent of respondents believe more training and qualified cybersecurity professionals are required, while over a quarter of respondents are concerned by the lack of qualified cybersecurity professionals in the region. Researchers who carried out the report found that data protection legislation is a grey area for many businesses in the region. Over 40 per cent of respondents believe African governments should be introducing tougher legislation to support businesses in their fight against cybercrime, or that almost 40 per cent aren’t even familiar enough with existing legislation to fully answer the question. A World Economic Forum (WEF) report has discovered that a significant amount of cybercrime goes undetected, be it from hackers using ‘zombie viruses’ or the ‘murky underworld of industrial espionage’ where access to documents and data is difficult to spot. African businesses therefore find themselves at a crossroads, where they must balance digital transformation with a greater focus on security policies and how to better protect customer data. As such, the report suggests that African governments should introduce tougher legislation to support businesses in their fight against cybercrime. The analysis states that approaches to the protection of data are changing across Africa, affecting both the digital privacy of citizens and the obligations of those that hold customer information. @enock_x254

The sneaky case of the celeb couple blow up and the suitably placed camera phone- Eric Omondi ‘breaks up with his fiancée’

E

The sneaky case of the

ric Omondi must be having an exciting year. In addition to the numerous hosting gigs, endorsements, claims of being one of the highest paid entertainers in the country--acquiring millions of shillings every month-- he has a beautiful fiancée to boot. So the only explanation for the raucous that he has been causing online for the past couple of days must be that he is absolutely and utterly bored with his success. A conveniently shot, with just the right amount of reality TV show drama, video of him engaged in a tiff with his Italian bride-to-be, Chantal Grazioli, in a swanky Nairobi bar surfaced online. The 21-second long video starts off with the comedian and his girlfriend already in a heated argument. She has what must be his phone in her hands listing off the amounts of airtime being sent to various numbers, presumably other women. What strikes the viewer here is not Chantal’s sufficient acting chops but the amounts of money that she is naming. Sh.200, Sh.500, she also mentions in a shrill voice, “she’s not even the only one!” which indicates that Eric Omondi must be sending out airtime to numerous women. But those low amounts for somebody as accomplished as he is are suspicious. The drama continues as Chantal bears down on him,

“You are not even understanding a n y t h i n g .” Adding, as Eric tries to defend himself, “Am I stupid?” Chantal Grazioli shreiks, capping off a seemingly successful audition for the next season of Nairobi Diaries. She throws a drink at him--the hallmark of any good reality TV show-- flinging the glass as she storms off in a huff. Eric then gets up all of a sudden completely scandalized in his ripped black jeans and loose black shirt. Once the video hit the net Kenyans reacted with the gusto that an interactive theatre is supposed to. Most of the online commentary seemed to lay into the fact Eric Omondi allegedly cheat on his girlfriend. ‘if “Eric Omondi can cheat on his Italian girl, matiang’i asitubebe ujinga ati this year candidates

Acha ufisi.’ Still other users saw right through the ruse, ‘this is called Viral Marketing!’, wrote Pearl Ivy. Eric Omondi has been enjoying popularity online due to his ‘How To Be’ series, parody anthems and new ridiculous single ‘Haiwezi!’ It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that he has a card up his sleeve.

anzanian songbird Saida Karoli, whose song ‘Salome’ was remixed by Diamond Platnumz and is currently topping charts across East Africa and beyond, has now revealed that her former manager swindled her in the deal. Saida has said that he allowed Diamond to adapt and rearrange the tune without asking for payment. ‘I gave Diamond the go-ahead to re-do the song because I wanted people to know that I still existed and I knew that would do the trick but now I hear that my former manager signed a deal that entitled me to 25% proceeds from the song of which I have not received and I do not know the content of the contract,’ she said.

SOME LEAFY GREENS, SOME LEAN MEAT AND SOME SPICES AND YOU HAVE A MEAL PRONTO.

W

e’ll be honest in saying that even as adults, eating vegetables is not the most pleasant experience of the dining process. They tend to be bitter and even tasteless in some instances and never truly leave us feeling satisfied. So how do we overcome this hurdle, here are some easy ways to add in more veggies in your diet.

SMOOTHIES

WAYS TO SNEAK MORE GREENS INTO YOUR MEALS

When has a smoothie ever let anyone down? Never. Smoothies are great because you can basically dump any food item that can be

juiced in a blender and that’s about it. In addition to throwing in some kale and spinach you can mix it up with some almond milk, mixed berries, citrus and even nuts and have an all-day snack.

SOUP

Just like the smoothie, soups can be turned into a smorgasbord of a meal. As long as it can be cooked, it can be turned into a soup. Stews and soups are considered one-pot meals, which means all you have to do is some light food prep and throw everything in one cooking pot and you are good to go. Some

HOME IMPROVEMENT You might love your house right now but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve an upgrade. If resell is something you might be into in the future, there are quick and simple ways to make sure the home is in tip top shape. Routine maintenance of the house is imperative. Making sure that everything functions in the way that it’s supposed to should be a priority. Don’t put off dealing with that leaky tap or faulty septic system because it could lead to more problems down the line. Buyers could also be looking for items on their checklist and this might be one of them.

LANDSCAPING

Take care of the plants and greenery on your property. It creates a cleaner point of view and actually boosts the aesthetic of the house. A shoddy landscape might give the perception that the interior might be equally as sloppy as the outside and drive house hunters away.

WAYS TO IMPROVE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME

LIGHTING

SMALL WAYS TO TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOURSELF ay-to-day stresses can be overwhelming and without adding the expectations that people around us place on us, it can be a bit too much to handle. So to make sure that you are looking out for number one, here are some little things you can do.

BREATHE

Find a peaceful place to reassess and convene with yourself. A little bit of sunshine and fresh air can go a long way. Even the little walk to get there can work wonders for your body. Just make sure it’s a quiet place you are going to and not an area that you will be inundated with the noise of traffic or unwelcome sounds.

One outstanding characteristic in the house can improve its value greatly. Exposed brick, a working fireplace, water feature, a small indoor solarium or atrium are some options you could choose from.

SLEEP

Porcelain plate clocks will be done using a protractor to divide the plate’s circumference into the twelve hours convention. After the inscribed numbers and decorated patterns properly dry, disassemble the clock mechanism and fix it on the plate such that the battery and gear compartment remains on the backside of the plate with the anterior rod going through the previously drilled hole. Finally, refit the clock’s hands into their place on the rod on the front side of the plate.

@mercy_x254

Naps are criminally underrated. Although it is not a direct solution to the problems that you may be facing, they’ll give you a little boost and reprieve from the hustle and bustle. Take a nap when it seems like a situation is simply out of your hands. It is called Rest and Relaxation for a reason after all.

SPEND LIMITED TIME ONLINE

We already spend too much time looking at our screens and not everything that we see online is exactly pleasant. Put the phone, tablet, laptop away for a minute and live in the moment. If you must watch something a few funny animal videos are always a great way to spend time. @christine_x254

egin by laying your plate of choice face down on a flat working space. Using a ruler, measure out the plate’s diameter and then divide the result by two to obtain the plate’s specific midpoint. At this point, carefully drill a hole through the midpoint, ensuring that the hole is wide enough for a clock’s hands-support rod to pass through. Use the sand paper to scrub the plate’s surface. This will allow smooth drawing or decoration using a marker pen according to your taste, as well as the inscription of time numbers which

We don’t always think of seasonings with regard to vegetables but many of them actually are veggies. Basil, oregano, parsley, mint, a nice bay leaf are all greens and they won’t have you in tears as you struggle to get through a meal. So sprinkle some hearty seasoning over a meal and enjoy this great tip!

Remembering to take a second is something very easy to forget. Take a minute to breathe and release all the tension in your body. Breathing exercises have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and manage anxiety according to The Science of Breathing.

Let the sunshine in. A well-lit home is a happy home. Lighting can make or break the purchase of a house. If access to natural light or large windows are not a possibility then invest in some lighting fixtures that create that same vibe. Installing a skylight no matter how small can increase the allure of your home exponentially.

Okumbi sets new record in Kenya’s 1-0 defeat of Liberia Stanley Okumbi broke Adel Amrouche’s seven-game unbeaten record as he led Harambee Stars to an eight straight result without defeat, thanks to Paul Were’s controversial second half goal that handed visiting Liberia a 1-0 defeat in an international friendly match played at Kasarani Stadium last evening. The winger who plays for seconddivision side Archanaikos of Greece found the target in the 53rd minute when he converted Eric Johanna’s defence-splitting pass having been restored to the side after missing Saturday’s game against the Mambas of Mozambique. However, the goal was mired in controversy with Liberia protesting it was scored from an offside position. Stars first coach, Stanley Okumbi however praised his squad for eking out victory after wasting a hat-load of chances to put the Lone Star to the sword with a more convincing victory. “It’s a great day for the players, they have done their best in the last two matches and it is good for them. Sometimes you might start slowly but during half time we told them they must work hard, be hungry enough and we improved in the second half. “I have been telling my players we must score as many goals as possible since we are creating many chances and not scoring them. We shall do scoring exercises when we gather next time,” Okumbi told reporters in a post-match interview. His opposite number James Debbah was filled with rage claiming his side were robbed of victory as he chided the Kenyans for failing to beat his young side convincingly. “We have a problem with the officiating of the game. The referees were biased, the goal, you saw the replay, was offside. You cannot build the team like that, if Kenya want to progress, you got to be fair because this is a test for your team. “You play against our third team, not the first, or the second but the third! This are young boys we brought to try them and you can’t even win!

Guardiola’s no sex rules at Man City

Pep Guardiola wants his Manchester City players to refrain from having sex after midnight, according to on-loan French midfielder Samir Nasri. The 29-year-old said the City boss imposed the rule, even if the team did not have a game the next day, so players get “a good night’s sleep”. Guardiola is also claimed to have said it helped Barcelona forward Lionel Messi avoid muscle injuries. Nasri was sent on a season-long loan to Sevilla on transfer deadline day. He told French TV programme L’Équipe du Soir that Guardiola “wants his players to be slim and fit”. Nasri added: “He banned a lot of things in the kitchen but the biggest anecdote is that he says before a day off, those who want to have (sexual) relations it’s before midnight. And that’s with a day off the next day. It’s because he wants you to have a good night’s sleep.” Nasri, who signed for City in 2011, added: “He said he told that to Messi, who since then does not get muscle injuries.” The midfielder made one appearance for City this season, before he was loaned to the La Liga club Guardiola did not allow Nasri to train with the main group during pre-season as he had returned overweight. “Guardiola told me that I was a mess, he told me several times and even kicked me in the butt, literally,” added Nasri.

‘Ze Maria’ voted coach of the month

The officiating was bad men, I’m not impressed!” It was a convincing display from the hosts despite Okumbi tinkering with the side that shut Mozambique out in another 1-0 victory on Saturday where Eric Johanna emerged the hero by scoring the winner. In truth, the Liberia never really tested Stars keeper Boniface Oluoch despite their coach John Debbah saying on Sunday he was coming to

burst Kenya’s bubble. Aboud Omar was the only change in the back four, taking the place of youngster Eric Ouma and fitting in seamlessly into the side in a game where inspirational skipper Victor Wanyama was withdrawn at half time. By resting Wanyama, Okumbi endeared himself to English Premier League (EPL) title-chasing side Tottenham Hotspur manager

Gor Mahia head coach Marcelo ‘Ze Maria’ Ferreira has been honoured as the Fidelity Insurance Coach of the Month for October. The award comes as a consolation for Ze Maria after his team conceded the league title to Tusker FC to end the season trophyless for the first time in four years. The coach however wants to end the season by beating their predecessors when the two teams meat in the season finale on Saturday. “I’m happy to get this award but it’s for my players. They have played like champions in the past five matches and for that I dedicate the award to them,” Ze Maria added promising to show on Saturday his side deserved the title when they take on Tusker. “We can give a guard of honour to Tusker but we’ll show them on the pitch that we are better. I feel sorry for my players for losing the title because of deducted points but we’ll start working for next year early. I want us to start 2017 on a high so as to wrap the title early,” the 43 year-old said. Ze Maria was unanimously voted coach of the month ahead of Tusker’s Paul Nkata and Sofapaka’s John Baraza having led the outgoing KPLchampions to victories over Mathare United and AFC Leopards before being held to a late 2-2 draw by Western Stima to cap an anxious month with seven points. @amos_x254

Brazil inch closer to World Cup qualification WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2016

Brazil moved four points clear atop the South American World Cup qualifying campaign group to move closer to sealing their place at the global football showpiece in Russia in 2018. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi scored a stunning free-kick as Argentina bounced back from their humiliating 3-0 defeat in Brazil last Thursday to revive their campaign. Chile also won 3-1 at home against Uruguay after being held to a barren draw in Colombia last time out. The matches played early today were the last round of qualifiers this year, with the campaign set to resume in March when Brazil travel to Uruguay before hosting their 2015 CopaAmerica executioners Paraguay. Brazil sit top of the pile in CONMEBOL’s 10-team group, four point clear of second-placed Uruguay and with seven points between themselves and the final automatic qualification place, meaning the Samba Boys are almost assured of a place in Russia 2018. Manchester City-bound forward Jesus was the hero in Lima, inspiring the win as Tite’s Brazil made it six consecutive qualifying victories for the first time since 1970.

In a thrilling encounter, Brazil sensation Jesus coolly converted from inside the penalty area 13 minutes into the second half, taking his international tally to five goals in just six appearances. The 19-year-old turned provider 11 minutes from time, teeing up Renato Augusto for their second. Brazil’s win, coupled with Uruguay’s loss in Chile, helped the South American giant move four points clear atop the standings after 12 matches, with Peru remaining eighth. Peru coach Ricardo Gareca brought in Andy Polo, Nilson Loyola and Pedro Aquino at the expense of Edison Flores, Christian Cueva and Miguel Trauco following last week’s sensational 4-1 rout of Paraguay. High-flying Brazil was forced into one change after the convincing 3-0 win over Argentina last time out, with the suspended Marcelo replaced by Filipe Luis at left-back as Neymar, Philippe Coutinho and Jesus continued to lead the attack line for the visitors. In Argentina, Messi struck with a stunning free-kick in the 10th minute before setting up Lucas Pratto for a first-half header at the Estadio San

Juan del Bicentenario. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was a constant threat for Edgardo Bauza’s team, who desperately needed their win following a difficult recent period, and set up Angel Di Maria for a tap in for the sealer late on. Radamel Falcao had a couple of firsthalf chances for Colombia, but they were otherwise outplayed.

The result mean Argentina moved above Colombia in CONMEBOL qualifying, a huge boost following losses to Paraguay and Brazil. An own goal by Gustavo Gomez in the 78th minute gave hosts Bolivia a 1-0 win over Paraguay in the 12th South American qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup. Their second defeat in two matches

leaves Paraguay with 15 points and a difficult task in securing one of the region’s berths in the 2018 tournament. GOR MAHIA’S ZE MARIA VOTED OCTOBER COACH OF THE MONTH

Lallana an injury doubt for Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is a doubt for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Southampton after limping off during England’s 2-2 draw with Spain. Lallana, 28, scored the opener from the penalty spot before being substituted with a knock in the 27th minute. England interim boss Gareth Southgate said after the match last night that he was unsure about the extent of the injury. “It was a great shame because I’ve really enjoyed working with him,” he said. “He’s an intelligent, very talented footballer who’s adding goals to his game for England. He was quite key to how we were wanting to play.” Lallana has played in every game this season for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side, who are top of the P r e m i e r League with 26 points from 11 matches. He has been in impressive form for both club and country, with his goal against Spain his second in as many games after scoring in Friday’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.

Southgate ends England audition with sour draw

G

areth Southgate’s four-game tenure as England’s interim manager ended in disappointment as Spain scored twice in the closing moments to snatch a draw in the Wembley friendly. England looked on course to further bolster Southgate’s claims to succeed Sam Allardyce as they impressed and took control through Adam Lallana’s early penalty, awarded when Spain keeper Pepe Reina hauled down Jamie Vardy. The Leicester City striker’s fine diving header from Jordan Henderson’s cross just after the break gave England a lead they did not look like relinquishing as the clock ticked down. Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas’ superb curling finish in the 90th minute gave Spain an unlikely lifeline - and England allowed them to complete the comeback as Isco smuggled home a far-post finish between England substitute keeper Tom Heaton’s legs in the fifth and final minute of injury time. A friendly against an understrength Spain was never going to be a deal-breaker when it came to measuring Southgate’s suitability to be England’s next permanent manager. It was, for 89 minutes at least, a very good night for the 46-year-old and an excellent way to conclude what has effectively been a fourgame audition to take over from Allardyce. Aspas had nerves jangling with that brilliant curling effort - and then Isco’s even later twist meant Southgate’s tenure ended on a sour note. Until that unexpected turn of events, the former Middlesbrough boss will surely have relished England dominating a Spain team that had looked unrecognisable from the team that would have contested a competitive fixture. The hosts looked to be heading for a record of three wins and a draw from Southgate’s quartet of fixtures, though the result is unlikely to deprive him of the chance to become England’s next permanent boss. However, it was not the finish he would have expected, or wanted, after Spain’s late show. It proved to be a mixed bag for Southgate and England - from the pleasure of taking a twogoal lead to the pain of its concession in the closing minutes. Southgate will surely be delighted with how the team looked in attack, even with captain Wayne Rooney injured and striker Daniel Sturridge on the bench. Vardy showed

flashes of last season’s form, while Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard linked up in promising fashion throughout. The bad came in the way England, much changed by that stage admittedly, rattled in those last few minutes. A few nightmares were revisited there. But the manager says he has shown he can cope with the intensity of leading England in high-pressure matches. Southgate, 46, is the favourite to replace Sam Allardyce after ending his fourmatch interim reign with last night’s draw. “Until this run, under this spotlight, and in matches under intense pressure, y o u ’r e never sure h o w it is going to be,” said the former England defender. “I’ve proved that I can handle big occasions.” The Football Association needs to d e c i d e whether S out h g at e is the right man for the job. If he is appointed t h e n his first game in
