At least 800,000 people living with HIV/ AIDS are facing a higher risk of death as a shortage of Anti-Retroviral drugs and nutritional supplements begins to bite. Out of the 1.5 million Kenyans living with the virus, at least 500 000 are not enrolled on ARV treatment due to a variety of reasons, with the other 200, 000 said to be in a stable condition. But according to the National Empowerment Network for people living with HIV, a majority of those infected with the virus and who rely on the government supplements to suppress its development have missed the crucial supplements for more than a year, a situation that could lead to a high death toll if not addressed in time. NEPHAK executive director Nelson Otwoma said today that the shortage was a creation of the government as monies budgeted for the same had been swindled in the alleged Afya House scandal.
