S citizens go to the ballot today to elect their 45th President in a historic election in which former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton faces off with business tycoon Donald John Trump in the race to succeed Barack Obama whose terms ends in January. The two candidates criss-crossed America in the final push for votes before election day today with rallies in the battleground states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Mrs Clinton urged voters to back a “hopeful, inclusive, big-hearted America” while Mr Trump told supporters they had a “magnificent chance to beat the corrupt system”. Polls give Democrat Mrs Clinton a four-point lead over Republican Mr Trump as voters head to the ballot. A record number of Americans, more than 46 million, have voted early by post or at polling stations. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama sought to lift Hillary Clinton to victory while Donald Trump warned she was the “face of failure” and predicted he would blow her away in today’s election. Former PS, IEBC managers among 500 seeking to become poll agency bosses TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016
Senior managers at the secretariat of the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC) are among some 500 individuals who have applied to fill the vacant positions of the agency’s chairperson and seven commissioners. The IEBC selection panel chaired by Bernadette Musundi has been receiving applications for the positions over the last two weeks. X News, has learnt that by close of yesterday’s deadline for applications, several senior officials of the electoral agency had reportedly applied to be commissioners citing their vast experiences in management of various departments in the secretariat. Lobbying for the top jobs is now at top gear with political rivals Jubilee and Cord having a keen eye on who makes the cut for the team to manage next year’s general election. Among those who applied to be considered for the position of IEBC commissioner is former Industrialisation Principal Secretary Wilson Songa. Dr Songa served under President Uhuru Kenyatta administration between 2013-2015 before being axed from government in the 2015 mini-reshuffle. He holds a BSc. in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi; MSc. in Crop Science from Wageningen Agricultural University, Netherlands and a PhD in Plant Pathology from University of
Reading, UK. Dr. Songa served as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural cooperation ACP-EU in the Netherlands from 2008-2011. Another applicant is Katasi Grace Nekoye, a former member of defunct OKOA Kenya secretariat and who also served as the Chairperson of the Media Council Complaints commission. She also applied to be nominated as a commissioner. Katasi is an advocate of the High Court with 24 years standing on the Roll of the Advocates. She will be trying her luck with the commission yet again after being beaten by IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba to the position in 2014. Ms Katasi is a holder of a Master of Laws (LLM), Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law & Practice from the Kenya School of Law. She also has a post-graduate diploma in Forensic Accounting and has several certifications including: Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Policy and Legislative Drafting, Project Management just to mention but a few. Cord leader Raila Odinga’s lawyer and his party lead counsel, Jotham Arwa, has also expressed his interest to be considered among the seven commissioners of the electoral agency. for the job having applied for the same position in 2011. The selection panel led by its chairperson Bernadette Musundi retreats as from today to scrutinise the applications. The panel shall then publish their qualifications of all the shortlisted candidates for public examination. The list of the shortlisted candidates for the commissioner’s position is expected to be out by 15th November, 2016 when members of the public will be given
seven days to give their views on the suitability of various candidates before interviews commence on November 22. 2016. The interviews are expected to conclude on November 26. On 30th November, the panel shall present two names for IEBC Chairperson and nine for commissioners’ positions to President Uhuru Kenyatta who will then have seven days to select chairperson and seven commissioners before
forwarding the list to the National Assembly for vetting and approval. The president will then swear in the commissioners before they assume office. On Sunday, the outgoing IEBC commissioners said the commission was running normally. CEO Ezra Chiloba has already appealed to Parliament to allow procurement of essential equipment to proceed to avoid delays that may compromise the 2017 General Election. @hillary_x254

Complete report on Afya House ‘scam’ to be out in seven days A complete audit report on the alleged loss of over Sh5 billion at the ministry of health will be ready in a week’s time, Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu has said. Dr Mailu told senators today that there is a team from the Treasury that is currently completing the audit report and Kenyans will know the truth once they are done. While appearing before the Senate Health Committee earlier today, the CS maintained that the amount of money in question at the ministry of health is Sh3.1 billion and not the Sh5 billion widely reported by the media based on the leaked audit report. Mailu told the committee that he will only take action on those implicated in the report after getting the complete report which is expected to be ready anytime this week. “I cannot act on an interim report but as soon as I get it, I will act on it,” Mailu said. He castigated the initial auditor, accusing him of not giving the ministry a chance to respond to the questions raised as is the standard practice in all ministries. Mailu said the audit was not a special audit report of the ministry but was just a normal report carried out on the financial management of

Rotich defends MoH tender awarded to President’s kin
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has defended the awarding of a government tender to a close relative of President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying she duly qualified as a woman. Speaking during a breakfast meeting today, Rotich said that no wrongdoing had been committed in awarding the ministry of health tender to Uhuru’s sister Nyokabi Kenyatta Muthama and cousin Kathleen Kihanya. The two, through Sundales International Limited in which they are directors, won a multi-million shilling tender for supplies to the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA). The CS said that they earned a right to transact with the government as they qualified under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO). “We do not differentiate who in the three categories is disadvantaged. As it stands, all of them are disadvantaged and have a right to do government with business,” Rotich said. Rotich said that opportunities programme reserved 30 per cent of government tenders specifically for women, youth and persons with disabilities. He further added that winners of such contracts with the administration should not be undermined regardless of their standing in society, saying even wealthy women qualified. @harrison_x254
procurement process. The transfer of the auditor who carried out the audit also raised questions with Mailu saying he didn’t understand why the officer was transferred after only four months stint at the ministry. “The officer was posted to us in April but was transferred in August. When I asked the Treasury they told me that my PS requested that he be transferred, I didn’t understand and I let it be,” he said. However, PS Nicholas Muraguri denied orchestrating the transfer of the auditor.
“Why did you ask for the transfer of the auditor just four months after he was posted at the ministry,” committee chairman Wilfred Machage asked Dr Muraguri who appeared before the committee after his boss. “I never personally asked for the transfer of the officer. I only requested the treasury to give us a more competent and senior person who could help us strengthen our internal audit system,” Muraguri responded. @sam_x254

KCSE candidate dies after collapsing in Nakuru
A student at the Jomo Kenyatta High School in Nakuru collapsed and later died on Monday, moments after arriving in school for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. The school principal, John Mureithi says the candidate said he was unwell and was taken to the nearby Nakuru North District Hospital where he collapsed and died. “He had talked very well with the doctors a few minutes before he collapsed and the doctors were wishing him all the best in his examinations. They had thought that Gikonyo would start his exams but unfortunately he did not make it,” the school head said. “It is unfortunate that just a few minutes before the exams started we lost Gikonyo,” he added. The deceased was identified as Francis Gikonyo who had been diagnosed with Hypertension, according to the Principal. “His parents had taken him to the same facility a few weeks ago where he was diagnosed with hypertension,” he said. Meanwhile, a supervisor deployed to Mombasa by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has been charged with leaking the ongoing examinations. Charges read to Dennis Juma Were indicate that he unlawfully disclosed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Chemistry Paper One exams at Mikindani Complex High School on Monday. He was arrested after cutting seals for the Chemistry Paper instead of the Mathematics. Were denied the charges before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Teresia Mwatheka who freed him on a Sh500, 000 bond until December 13th when the case will be mentioned.

Clinton, Trump make final pitches to voters From Page 1
the candidates and their surrogates held nearly two dozen rallies, chased one another through swing states and made desperate last pleas to voters. Clinton won the tiny town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, as eight residents cast midnight ballots in an election day tradition. Four voted for Clinton, two backed Trump while one person supported Libertarian Gary Johnson and one person wrote in 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney. Clinton and Trump both go into Election Day with paths to the White House. But Clinton has many more options to secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Perhaps reflecting optimism, Clinton stressed national unity in her closing appearances Monday, while Trump returned to his claims that the political system and the media were rigged against him. The former secretary of state capped her campaign with a remarkable passingof-the-baton rally with President Obama before a crowd of about 20,000 against the symbolic backdrop of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. “I regret deeply how angry the tone of the campaign became,” Clinton said, prompting one woman in the crowd to shout out, “Not your fault!” But Clinton went on to slam the “many troubling things” Trump had said about women, Muslims, Latinos and African-Americans. She said Trump’s “most horrifying” comment was his warning that he may not accept the election result. “Let’s show tomorrow there will be no question about the outcome of this election!” Clinton said. Obama introduced Clinton in a speech that was both a firm endorsement and a poignant farewell to politics. “We now have the chance to elect a 45th president who will build on our progress who will finish the job ... who is smart, who is steady and who is tested,” Obama said. “She will work, she will deliver. She won’t just tweet.” The President said he was counting on Americans not to elect Trump. “America, I am betting on you one more time,” Obama said, predicting the nation would “reject fear” and choose hope. Michelle Obama, who has used her popularity to become perhaps Clinton’s most powerful surrogate, called on Democrats to turn out in huge numbers to prevent Trump becoming president. “This election is on us. It is in our hands,” she said. “If we get out and vote tomorrow, Hillary Clinton will win.” Trump, meanwhile, presented himself as the face of change for Americans, whom he said had been let down by a corrupt political system. “Hillary is the face of failure. She’s the face of failure,” Trump said, blasting Clinton’s political record and service as secretary of state. The Republican nominee claimed, in defiance of polls showing a mid-single digit Clinton lead, that he was tied with his rival in Pennsylvania, a state that forms a crucial part of Clinton’s Democratic firewall. “They say we’re tied in Pennsylvania. I don’t think so. I think we’re going to blow them out tomorrow. Blow them out,” Trump said at a rally in Scranton, one of the most hotly contested parts of the state. The latest CNN Poll of Polls gives Clinton a fourpoint lead over Trump, 46% to 42%. In most of the swing states that will decide, the race is tight.

But if Clinton can hang on to most states that have voted Democratic in recent elections and add at most a couple of swing states, she will likely win the election. But Democrats are worried about Trump’s strength in the Midwest, particularly in Michigan, which has not voted Republican since 1988. Trump has been making a strong push there amid narrowing polls. Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway predicted that Trump will win Michigan, telling ABC’s “Good Morning America” that the campaign feels “really good” about the latest polling in upper Midwest states. But Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said late visits to Michigan by both Clinton and
Obama on Monday were more a function of the calendar and the lack of early voting there than a sign of genuine anxiety. “Our strategy these last few days is to focus on the states where voting overwhelmingly happens on Election Day,” Mook said on CNN’s “New Day.” “Previously, as you’ve seen, we’ve been focused on states like Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, where the majority of the voting happens early.” He continued: “So, this is really a reflection of the voting calendar. Donald Trump has been kind of running to each and every state it seems. So they have their strategy. But we have ours.” Trump has little margin for error. He will need to win Ohio, North Carolina and Florida, where he is locked in close races with
Clinton, just to give him a chance to make the near-perfect run through the remaining swing states that he needs to capture the presidency. Democrats are particularly encouraged by indications of a surge of Hispanic voters in early voting in Florida and Nevada. But there also are warning signs for Clinton, with AfricanAmericans not as large a proportion of the earlyvoting electorate as they were for Obama in 2008 and 2012. CNN’s most recent electoral map shows Clinton is projected to win 268 electoral votes from states that are solidly blue or leaning in her direction. Trump has 204 votes from states that are solidly in his column or leaning that way. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the White House.

Major road projects to be implemented on a PPP basis The Government has unveiled five key road projects to be constructed and maintained through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Model. This means the projects will be undertaken by private sector players, who will recover their investment during the course of the projects. The PPP model is expected to enable the country to undertake more infrastructure projects than can currently be achieved through public resources alone. The Private Public Partnership Unit, a department under the National Treasury, will oversee the financing of the roads and bridge project. “PPP road projects will enable faster modernization of our roads, translating to quality and better maintained roads. They enable the government mobilize more resources for speedy and sustainable growth and implement private sector efficiencies,” said Public Private Partnership Unit Director, Eng. Stanley Kamau. Infrastructure Principal Secretary, Eng. The survey indicates that this is a 20 per cent increase in earnings as compared to the same period last year when the country’s total earnings were Sh64.84 billion. The data further revealed that flower exports contributed Sh53.88 billion to the revenues, representing a 69 per cent of the total earnings, with the rest coming from the export of fruits and vegetables. The horticulture sub-sector is one of the top foreign exchange earners for the country generating approximately $1 billion (Sh101.6 billion) annually. In 2015, the sub-sector contributed 1.45 per cent to the national gross domestic product (GDP) while flower exports contributed 1.01 per cent was from the

1.5 million Kenyans to be connected to subsidized, reliable green energy At least 1.5 million Kenyans are set to pay less for power in the coming months as more efficient and costeffective sources come to the grid to replace thermal and hydroelectric sources, Kenya Power and Lighting Company has said. The firm has stated that the set target would bring the total number of Kenyans connected to clean energy to 9 million, representing a connection of 80 per cent over the next for years as the company moves to connect every Kenyan to power by 2020. Kenya Power says it reduced the amount of thermal power dispatched to customers in the year 2015/2016, both in terms of installed and distribution capacity. The electricity distributor ceased sourcing power from the expensive 30MW Muhoroni diesel-generated power plant in 2015 as the relatively cheaper geothermal power from Olkaria expands to Western Kenya.
Peter Mungai, General Manager for Business Strategy at Kenya Power, says thermal power now contributes 11 per cent of total electricity, a nearly 60 per cent drop in five years. “Because of the good energy mix, the cost of power has gone down. The price per unit has come down from Sh7.2 in 2014 to the current figure of Sh2.3 per unit,” said Mungai, at an investor briefing. Geothermal power has grown fourfold in five years, now contributing the biggest share in the energy mix at 4,608 GWh replacing hydro power at 3,787 GWh. “The percentage of usage of thermal will continue to go down and this is because we are continuing to bring other cheaper sources of energy like geothermal, solar and wind,” Mungai explained. Company statistics indicate that the firm connected 1.25 million new customers over the last one
year, bringing the total number of customers to around 5 million, a 30 per cent jump in the last three years. As a result, domestic customers contributed the highest growth in the 2015/16 financial year as total revenues grew from Sh106 billion to Sh108 billion The length of the network has grown in tandem with the rising distribution capacity. High tension lines have been extended by 4,200 km while low voltage lines have increased by 4,700 kilometres. In additional to the power distribution lines, Kenya Power has invested in new and upgraded substations to handle the growing demand. The distributor confirmed that it has received pledges of about Sh30.49 billion from development partners to expand off-grid electricity systems in far-flung areas. @enock _x254

Kenya, Botswana sign MOU to deepen trade r TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016
Kenya and Botswana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding as the two countries look to build their trade and investment partnerships in various economic sectors cutting across agriculture, agri-business, ICT, Horticulture and Manufacturing among others. Speaking during the Kenyan-Botswana Forum in Nairobi, Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed confirmed that Kenya had been proactive in its efforts to improve relations between the two nations to capitalise on business and investment opportunities for their mutual benefit. “We are excited at the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding as a show of commitment to strengthen our trade and investment ties with Botswana as we seek to leverage our competitive advantages in diverse industries for our mutual benefit”, said Mohamed. “We have had productive trade connections in the past and the forum today will further bond us as we expand our portfolio of commodities to develop and diversify our economic capacity,” he added. Mohamed was speaking during the Forum, which was held yesterday. Following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to Gaborone to attend the Botswana-Kenya Business Forum in June this year and the subsequent visit by Botswana’s President, Ian Khama to Kenya in the same month, both countries have increased their joint efforts towards creating an enabling platform for increased partnerships for companies from both nations to conduct business. “Being part of EAC and COMESA trading blocs Kenya has achieved an improved status with our counterparts and this has provided us with a favourable reputation in the global economy. We now want
to leverage this global perception to further the country’s economic capacity for production and expand our trade commodity variety to access different markets,” said Mohamed. State Minister for Investment, Trade and Industry Botswana, Vincent T. Seretse has said Botswana is committed to improving relations and leveraging Kenya’s competitive positioning in Africa to improve his country’s economic capabilities. “Following our progressive efforts in June this year, this forum will showcase our resolve to strengthening bilateral relations between Kenyan and Botswana. We are committed to exploring alternative industries to facilitate increased trade in ICT, agri-business among others to promote the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for both nations. We look forward to increased interaction in the coming months and years,” said Seretse. Kenyan exports to Botswana in 2014 stood at Sh834 million, according to the Kenya Revenue Authority Customs Department (KRACD) but drooped to Sh451 million by the beginning of 2016 following reduced trade between the African nations. Kenya’s main imports from Botswana are general electricals, rubber material, clothing, furniture, household electricals, television receivers and pottery, whilst the country exports pharmaceuticals, mineral oils, fruit juices, instruments and appliances, lighting and fittings. This MOU signing comes a time when Kenya has ramped up the local business environment, supported by the recent improvement in the Ease of Doing Business ranking to position 92, testifying the numerous regulatory changes seen and development experienced within the Kenyan business environment.

Paediatric Nutrition Educational Initiative launched in bid to fight child mortality Kenya has launched a drive dubbed the Paediatric Nutrition Education Initiative seeking to save millions of children by investing in proper nutrition in the first 1,000 days of a baby’s life. Proper nutrition in the first 1,000 days has been recognized globally to have a profound impact on a child’s ability to grow, learn and thrive and has a lasting impact on long term health. According to the Kenya Demographic Healthy Survey for 2014, about one in every 26 children born in Kenya dies before their first birthday, while one in every 19 does not live to celebrate their 5th. “It is important to get adequate nutrition for mothers and children. It is very important that they get the best nutrition in the first 1000 days of life because that’s where most of the mortality happens,” said Prof Clifford Wayne, Director for the Harvard Human Nutrition Program. Prof Wayne believes that proper nutrition should start even before a woman is pregnant, through her pregnancy and into the first three years of a baby’s life. In order to help keep healthcare professionals
keep up-to-date on the evolving science, Nestlé Nutrition Institute Africa (NNIA) has provided funding to develop a dedicated global program entitled “Post Graduate Program in Paediatric Nutrition (PGPN)”. The program has been developed by MedInscribe and BUSM, a leader in medical education and research. With MedInscribe providing logistical support, 40 Kenyans were selected and trained on the course. The program offers a unique opportunity to strengthen healthcare professionals’ knowledge and practice in paediatric nutrition by familiarizing them with evidence-based guidelines and recommendations through a series of online learning modules, delivered in various formats including text, video and audio. The final stage of education is presented in a series of live meetings delivered in various locations worldwide. “We have done well in Kenya, we have reduced child and infant deaths by half, but now we also need to look at what else after saving the lives. We have to focus on the health of those who have
survived,” said Prof Fredrick Were, Professor of pediatrics and Dean for the School of Medicine at University of Nairobi. Since the launch of the program in March 2016, close to 4,500 healthcare professionals from 63 countries have become a part of the initiative. The majority of applications have been submitted from Africa, Asia and the Middle East where typically the burden of nutritional challenges in children is higher and access to education about nutrition is limited. “Today, science shows us that getting the right nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life can have a profound impact on life-long health. Our long standing commitment to support nutrition education has been further strengthened with the development of this program and is a step forward in realizing our vision of Together Nurturing a Healthier Generation,” commented Heiko Schipper, Chief Executive Officer at Nestlé. @enock_x254

Interest rate capping law may be ineffective, detrimental to banking sector, IMF warns The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed concern over the recent amendments to Kenya’s Banking Act that set limits on deposit and lending rates. The international lender said they are likely to have an adverse impact on Kenya’s economy. “While these amendments aim to reduce the cost of borrowing and increase the return on savings, international experience shows that interest rate controls are ineffective and give rise to unintended negative consequences,” said Benedict Clements, Division Chief for the Fiscal Policy and Surveillance Division of the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department. These, he explained, would include reduced access to financing for small and medium-sized enterprises, and an increase in informal and predatory lending at much higher interest rates. Interest rate limits could also reverse the remarkable increase in financial inclusion that has benefited a large proportion of Kenya’s population. Speaking in a recent report released this November, Clements warned that these adverse effects could lead to lower economic growth and undermine efforts to reduce poverty. Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich participates in a panel discussion titled ‘Frontier Economies: The Next Generation of Emerging Markets’ during the 2013 IMF World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington, DC. Kenya from October 19 to November 3, 2016, to conduct discussions on the first reviews under a precautionary Stand-By Arrangement and a Stand-By Credit Facility (SBA/SCF). On March 14, 2016, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a SDR 709.259 million (Sh100.6 billion) 24-month Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) and a SDR 354.629 million (about Sh50.3
billion) 24-month Standby Credit Facility (SCF) for Kenya, for a combined SDR 1.06 billion (about Sh152.5 billion, or 196 per cent of Kenya’s quota). Kenyan authorities have indicated that they will continue to treat both arrangements as precautionary, and do not intend to draw on the new SBA and SCF arrangements unless exogenous shocks lead to an actual balance of payments need.
During the visit, the team met with the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Mr. Henry Rotich; the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Dr. Patrick Njoroge; the Principal Secretary for the National Treasury, Dr. Kamau Thugge; the Deputy Governor of the CBK, Ms. Sheila M’mbijjewe; members of the CBK Monetary Policy Committee, and senior government and CBK officials.
90 per cent of seized ivory University students set to comes from recentlylock horns at third Global poached animals - new report Management Challenge Ninety per cent of the ivory in 14 large seizures between 2002 and 2014 came from animals that had died less than three years before the tusks were confiscated, a new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America has found. The revelations, which conservation groups have termed as shocking, come just as Kenya has received global recognition for condemning poaching and destroying ivory stockpiles to combat the practice. The report has found that seized illicit shipments of elephant ivory are almost entirely made up of tusks from recently poached animals rather than siphoned from government stockpiles, scientists using a forensic technique reported on Monday. It also notes that there has been speculation that some ivory making its way illicitly between Africa and Asia has been illegally diverted from state stockpiles, which are collected from domestic seizures and animals that have died naturally in the wild. The analysis shows that high-profile
environmental campaigns, international treaties and millions of dollars of aid and NGO funds over decades have failed to solve a poaching crisis in Africa, where tusks from slain animals are quickly finding their way to market. The report’s authors found that the lag time between killing and confiscation was generally between six and 35 months, with ivory from east Africa making it into shipments faster, the study said. Researchers used a radiocarbon dating technique known as Carbon-14 and discovered that, of 231 ivory specimens examined, only one came from an animal that had died longer than six years beforehand. “We had assumed older ivory from stockpiles was leaking into trade, particularly from more corrupt countries. This study shows that’s not the case. The source is from freshly poached elephant,” explained Liz Bennett, Vice President of Species Conservation at the U.S.-based Wildlife Conservation Society.
Students from Kenyatta University; Jomo Kenyatta University for Agriculture & Technology; the University of Nairobi and Strathmore University, as well as professionals pursuing the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification are set to lock horns in the latest edition of the Global Management Challenge (GMC) Kenya. The GMC was launched in the country in 2015 to give young professionals, youth and students an opportunity to develop the practical skills required to grow and manage businesses. Developed by management researchers from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland thirty-five years ago, the GMC has grown to become the biggest management simulator in the world. Over 450 students and professionals have registered to take part in the third edition of the event. Company teams participating in this year’s edition include: Centum Investments; Tarpo Industries; Antarc Furniture; and Profiles International. Over the course of the competition, female leadership has continued to grow, with 51 of the 94 student teams
being captained by women this year. “As an employer, I have a keen interest in getting access to a well-developed talent pool,” explained Asim Shah, Co-Director of the GMC in Kenya, on the reason why the competition was launched in Kenya. “Companies invest heavily in training employees in order get the best possible performance from them. We are working with several businesses and partners, through the GMC, to help develop a culture of self-learning among young people, and expose them to leadership in business. The previous editions of the GMC have also demonstrated that success in entrepreneurship is gender neutral,” Shah added. The highly competitive rounds will see 112 teams knocked down to 32 teams after the first round and finally to eight teams for the national finals. The winning team will represent Kenya at the international finals that will be held in Doha, Qatar, in April 2017. The previous edition of the competition saw a young team from Kenyatta University emerge among the top 10 globally, out of a total of 7,000 teams that participated across the globe.

treet art has undergone a renaissance of sorts in recent times. In the past, the art form was perceived as an activity vandals and teenagers with too much time on their hands got up to. Called a variety of names “urban art”, “guerrilla art”, “post-graffiti” and “neo-graffiti” was used as a form of rebellion and expression. Street art was largely seen as a means of passing socially charged messages and an imperative part of the activism process. Although this still stands to this day, street art has been used as a way to reclaim public spaces in addition to social and personal commentary. Including more traditional graffiti, sculptures are also incorporated into the movement. Recently Greenpeace environmental organization installed face masks over public statues in London to raise awareness about the severe air pollution problem that the city is facing. As explained on Reclaiming Spaces, ‘Designed by the artist, Christopher Kelly, the masks are all unique to every statue, and took a month of making and organizing to accomplish. Wearing safety vests with the emblem “Statue Cleaning Team,” activists scaled 18 statues in one morning.’ Some view this type of art as a nuisance or even illegal, considering its origins, but street art’s advantage is that it can transform a landscape into a much more nuanced way than commercial ‘art’ such as advertising. It can rouse deep feelings and discussion. On the Journal of Consumer Research the authors state, ‘We show public space can be contested as private and commercialized by companies and artists, or offered back as a collective good, where sense of belonging and dialogue restore it to a meaningful place.’ @chrstine_x254

or many couples who are just starting out dating, pregnancy is usually perceived as a plague that must be avoided at all costs. Contraception is handled and practiced with extreme caution just to avoid the consequences of a slip up. While monthly cycles are charted religiously. But for married couples children are most times just part of the equation. It is assumed that once you get married, you will have children but for some that is unfortunately not the case no matter their personal feelings towards it. Infertility is not an issue that is widely discussed in our communities despite the, at times devastating effects of the condition. The World Health Organisation [WHO] reports that ‘one in every four couples in developing countries has been found to be affected by infertility’, according to the Demographic and Health Surveys conducted from 1990 to 2004. Although a quarter of all couples are dealing with this problem it remains a shadowy and often shameful topic. Taking into consideration the world we live in, women bear the

brunt of the problem which is not to say that they are in fact the problem. This can only be determined by a physician and not instinct. But once who might need treatment is established, another problem arises. Fertility treatments are some of the most expensive medical procedures around, and in Kenya many of the facilities are not even present to help couples seeking a solution. In South Africa, where fertility treatment is considered affordable and the country is actually enjoying medical tourism because of this, Intrauterine Insemination [IUI] costs between R4000 – R6000 (Sh.30,320 – Sh.45,480) for every treatment and In Vitro Fertilization [IVF] costs between R30,000 – R40,000 (Sh.227,400 – Sh.303,200) per cycle. This is without add-
ing the consultation and investigation fees. For many couples infertility will remain a reality that they will have to deal with. Even when they can meet the cost of treatment, there is no assurance that it will result in conception. The most important thing for a couple experiencing infertility to do would be adopt a ‘we’ mindset. Handle the stresses and the burdens together because it is a problem that is affecting the both of you. Another good idea would be to find a support group of other couples going through the same thing, in addition to finding some professional counselling. They will be able to provide information and emotional support through trying times. Explore other options around you. There are millions of children looking for loving homes including thousands of children in Kenya. If adoption is an alternative visit http:// www.kchadopt.org/ for resources.

Gor’s Ze Maria applauds rivals Tusker for winning league title
Gor Mahia head coach Jose ‘Ze Maria’ Marcelo Ferreira is the latest top flight manager to commend Tusker FC for winning the 2016 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and the 11th in the club history. The victory came at the expense of Gor who had won the title for the past three seasons. The former Brazilian international conceded it was Tusker’s season and it was normal for teams to lose titles as he prepares to rouse his team for their season ending clash with the new champions after the international break. Ze Maria who played for Italian giants Inter Milan praised his charges for the spirited last-minute fight they put in an attempt to reel in the Brewers in the title chase that ended on Sunday when Tusker beat arch-rivals AFC Leopards 1-0 to open an unassailable four point cushion with a game to go at the KPL summit. While Gor had many chances in the second leg to catch up with their rivals only to be undone by many draws, the Brazilian blamed Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to loosening their grip on the domestic crown. “We could have won the league had it not been for the federation’s decision to chop three points following crowd trouble in one of our matches. It is the first time I am seeing this in my football history. Gor were docked three points by KPL’s Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Commission (IDCC) when their first leg clash against Tusker was halted for almost quarter of an hour when trouble blamed on the Green Army supporters flared up in the stands. The decision was upheld by FKF’s Independent Disciplinary and Appeals Commission on four counts before Gor moved to the Government’s Sports Tribunal in a final bid to quash the decision but that was also turned down. Ze Maria intends to see out his contract with Gor in a bid to reclaim their crown and add more silverware next season. “I have not been told anything about termination and so believe I’m still the head coach. I also

have good relations with the club officials and I don’t think they are up to any bad motive,” the former Selacao defender added. Ze Maria will sit down with club officials to discuss the changes on
the playing unit ahead of the next campaign. “They have also seen our weak points and it will not be a personal decision. Some players have not been effective and have to be
released,” he added. Ze Maria cautioned Tusker to expect the mother of all contests in the season finale as the dethroned champions battle for pride.
Guinness launches initiative to connect with Kenyan fans Beer brand, Guinness, has unveiled a programme that will bring together communities across the country through their universal love for football. Under the banner ‘Made of Football’, the programme entails renovation of local pitches and countrywide community viewing centres as well as consumer promotions and the continued sponsorship of broadcast of English Premier League games. Guinness will refurbish four community pitches across the country between November 2016 and June 2017. The pitches are spaces used by local football clubs or simply fans who come together to play football as a pastime. “An initiative to renovate community pitches in Kenya is long overdue. Many clubs and players train on rough pitches with uneven surfaces that have inherent injury risks. The Guinness Made of Football pitch renovations will deliver spaces where not only clubs but entire communities can come together and play their favourite game,” said Mr Andrew Kilonzo, Sales Director, Kenya Breweries Ltd. Football is the most popular sport globally as statistics indicate that there are an estimated 3.5 billion fans globally, with Africa ranking second in popularity of the sport. In Kenya, the UK football league matches are only available on paid channels available via digital set top boxes. The Communication Authority of Kenya states that the number of digital set top boxes purchased in 2015/2016 were 3,043,944 Pay TV and 95,493 for Cable. However, for many fans the digital TV packages that offer football matches are costly. As a result they rely on the local bars for viewing. Therefore, in addition to the pitch makeovers, Guinness will set up mobile viewing centres where UK football matches will be aired live on large screens in 57 locations in Kenya. The centres, expected to reach 60,000 fans, are designed to give fans a stadium ambiance complete with great watching space and state of the art screens for football fans. Samuel Wasswa, Marketing Manager said: “This year Guinness is showing even greater support for the incredible football fans across the country in a way only Guinness can. Through the ‘Made of Football’ campaign we are providing exciting experiences for football fans in the country, whether that be incredible prizes and competitions or unique viewing experiences.” As fans enjoy the Premier League matches, consumers who buy Guinness stand a chance to be rewarded through a consumer promotion dubbed “Get Booked” which will reward 6 customers with a trip to the UK to watch a live English Premier League game as well as over Kshs1,000,000 in cash prizes available to win. The promotion is currently running in over 5,000 bars across the country till December 18th 2016.

Neymar should face fraud trial
Barcelona and Brazil footballer Neymar should face trial for fraud, a Spanish judge has said, months after the case was dismissed. The case was reopened on Monday, brought by investment fund DIS, which claims it was short-changed during Neymar’s 2013 move to Barcelona. The fund formerly owned the transfer rights to the 24-year-old. The charges - which are denied by the accused, including Neymar and his parents - were dropped in July. Judge Jose de la Mata was ordered to reopen the case in September by Spain’s Supreme Court. DIS, which was entitled to 40% of Neymar’s transfer from Brazilian club Santos, claims it received a smaller compensation than it should have because part of the transfer fee was allegedly concealed. As well as the footballer, whose full name
is Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, and his parents, the former and current club presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu and the club itself stand accused of involvement, according to Spanish news agency EFE. Since moving to the Nou Camp, Neymar has won two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, the Champions League, the European Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup. He signed a new five-year contract with Barcelona in October. Barcelona have already been told to pay a fine of 5.5m euros ($6.1m; £4.7m) because of tax irregularities in Neymar’s transfer. Prosecutors now have 10 days to formalise their request for a trial.
Barcelona forward Neymar is expected to appaear in a Spanish supreme court to answer to charges of fraud.

E
ngland interim boss Gareth Southgate has defended Manchester United’s Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw after criticism from their club manager, Jose Mourinho. The United boss questioned the pair for missing Sunday’s 3-1 Premier League win at Swansea, saying: “For the team, you have to do anything.” Smalling has a foot injury, while Shaw played in United’s Europa League defeat by Fenerbahce on Thursday. Southgate said there was “obviously something wrong” with both players. Central defender Smalling, 26, and left-back Shaw, 21, have been left out of the England squad for Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Scotland and next week’s friendly against Spain. Shaw has played s i x l e a g u e games this season since returning from a double leg break last September. Real Madrid forward ‘has 10 years’ left
C
ristiano Ronaldo has won Marca’s Alfredo di Stefano award for the best player in La Liga for the 2015-16 season and he collected the trophy on the day he penned a new five year, £365,000-a-week deal at Real Madrid. Ronaldo netted 35 goals and provided 11 assists for Madrid in the Spanish division last season as his side finished second to Barcelona. He also netted 16 times in the Champions League on the way to lifting the trophy for the third time in his career and the second with Madrid, before going on to help Portugal to glory at Euro 2016 in France in the summer. ‘The 2015-16 season was filled with many emotions with the Champions League and the European Championship,’ Ronaldo told the audience upon being presented the award at the Florida Retiro in Madrid. ‘Today has also been a very special day with my contract renewal and a prize from MARCA. What else I can ask for? ‘I’m very happy. This motivates me to keep working and get better in the next few years.’ The 31-year-old also took the opportunity to underline his ambition of cementing Madrid’s place at the summit of La Liga as they look to reclaim the Spanish league from fierce rivals Barcelona. Madrid currently lead the way with 27 points from
11 matches. They are undefeated so far and have a two point lead over Barcelona. ‘It’s as competitive as expected, but this is not a sprint, it’s a marathon and we are going to fight,’ Ronaldo said. ‘As always, God will help whoever works hardest.’ Ronaldo’s Madrid team-mate Alvaro Morata was also honoured by Marca. He was named the best player for the Spanish national team in 2015-16. He scored three times at Euro 2016 but was ultimately unable to stop Spain surrendering the title they had won in 2008 and 2012. The 24-year-old was quick to reference Ronaldo’s influence upon him at Madrid after returning to the Spanish side following two years in Italy with Juventus. ‘It’s all about winning titles,’ Morata said. ‘When I went to football with my family I imagined playing in the Santiago Bernabeu, I owe my life to them. ‘Real have started very well this year and I hope that when it finishes I am near Ronaldo’s goal tally. ‘This is one of the best teams in the world and every minute on the pitch is golden. I’ve no choice but to fight for that everyday with my club and my country.’ Luis Suarez, the only man to outscore Ronaldo in La Liga in 2015-16, was awarded the Pichichi trophy for his effort of 40 goals, which propelled Barcelona to league glory.

PHOTO: EPA The former Liverpool striker was unable to attend the ceremony due to international commitments with Uruguay but a video was shown of him receiving the honour. He was the only Barcelona star honoured by the famously pro-Madrid paper, despite Lionel Messi and Co winning the Spanish title last season. Elsewhere, there were two awards for Atletico Madrid after they finished as runners-up in the Champions League and third in La Liga in the last campaign. Boss Diego Simeone received the Miguel Munoz Coach of the Year prize, while goalkeeper Jan Oblak took the Zamora trophy for conceding the lowest number of goals. ‘This award speaks highly of the work done by the team and reflects well on me, but it is a collective effort,’ Simeone said. ‘I am aware of the need to improve... We must continue to improve, continue to compete, but where we are, in the second round of the Champions League two games before the end of the group stages is good.’ Like his manager, Atletico goalkeeper Oblak felt his award was representative of the level and effort from his team. ‘I want to thank my team-mates and coaches, who help me to play in the best way and to concede the fewest number of goals,’ Oblak said.
