Donald Trump defies odds to floor Hillary Clinton in White House race WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9, 2016

Donald Trump will become the 45th president of the United States of America after a stunning victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the elections held yesterday. Republican Trump cruised to victory by garnering 289 Electoral College votes against Mrs Clinton’s 218. A candidate requires at least 270 Electoral College votes to be declared winner. On popular vote, Trump had garnered 58, 173, 271 votes against Clinton’s 57, 708, 523 representing a 47.8% against 47.4% of votes. The Republican nominee’s victory came down to a handful of key swing states, despite months of polling that favoured Mrs Clinton. The battlegrounds of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina cleared the way for his Brexit-style upset. Trump’s running mate Mike Pence took to the stage just moments after the Electoral College votes of Trump hit 276 and officially declared Mr Trump the next US President. Pence was introduced as the Vice

President elect before he himself introduced the President-elect to give his victory speech. In his acceptance speech that lasted12 minutes, Trump made a reconciliatory remark saying he needs everyone for America to be ‘great again’. Trump in his speech at Trump headquarters in New York appreciated the work of his competitor and Democrat Candidate Hillary Clinton saying she has done great work for America. “I have just receive call from Hillary Clinton conceding defeat, Clinton has worked very hard for Americans for a long time,” Trump said amid applause from thousands of his supporters who turned out to celebrate his victory. “It’s time for us now to come together and work for the Americans,” Trump added Trump said every single American will now have an opportunity to realize his dream. The US President elect did not mince his words about the US relations with

other countries under his leadership saying America will get along with other nations willing to get along with her. “I have a great economic plan for this country and to other countries, I want to say that we will get along with those countries willing to get along with us,” Trump said with deafening cheers coming from the crowd. Trump summed the whole journey until his victory as ‘historic’ and promised his supporters that he will not let them down in reclaiming the America’s ‘lost’ glory. “It has been what they call a historic event and I promise that we will not let you down, we will do a great job. We must reclaim our country’s destiny, must and have to do it,” Trump said “Campaign is over but our work on this movement has just began,” he added

“I want to thank my family, mother, father and wife. They have done amazing work to me and I really appreciate their role in my life,” said the President elect. As a nervous world watched and waited, Americans chose between radically different visions of the future offered by Clinton and Trump. American opinion polls placed Clinton on the lead all through, however it’s the silent Americans whose fears, frustration and disaffection with the status quo and Washington’s failed promises carried the day. Trump’s message resonated well with the silent voters as he voiced their concerns so effectively with the win only reminiscing the Brexit rebellion. Trump pressed his message with voters who feel left behind by globalisation and social change, wrapping up with a flourish on his protectionist slogan of “America first”. Promising to end “years of betrayal”, to tear up free trade deals, to seal the border, to halt the drug trade and to subject Syrian refugees to “extreme vetting”, Trump told his supporters in New Hampshire: “I am with you and I will fight for you and we will win.” Trump repeatedly warned that a “corrupt Washington and media elite” is seeking to rig the race and he said last month that he may not concede defeat if he thinks voting is unfair. “When he was asked: will he concede the elections, his response was ‘We will see’,” Saloomey said. Since announcing his presidential campaign in June 2015, Trump, a billionaire businessman from New York, has consistently alienated minority groups refused to release his tax returns and remained seemingly unapologetic for leaked tapes in which he brags about sexually assaulting

women. The uncertainty of the election results in the most powerful country in the world sent Dow futures and Asian markets tumbling, reflecting investor concern over what a Trump presidency might mean for the economy and trade. As Clinton’s team anxiously waited for results to roll in, the candidate tweeted to supporters, “Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.” Trump hinted again on Tuesday that he would refuse to accept election results if he loses. “We’re going to see how things play out,” Trump told Fox News, alleging that there had been voting irregularities. “I want to see everything honest.” Trump also filed a lawsuit against the Clark County Registrar of Voters in the state of Nevada, alleging that early voting stations were open longer than the designated time. Clinton carried Virginia, Colorado and California. Her campaign had expected easy victories there, but the states took on new urgency as Trump picked up votes elsewhere. The 69-year-old former first lady, senator and secretary of state who was backed by incumbent President Barack Obama - on Monday, she urged the country to unite and vote for “a hopeful, inclusive, big-hearted America” in her last effort to woo voters. In Nairobi U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec has said they are ready to welcome the new President. While addressing the media at the US Embassy in Nairobi, Godec also warned Kenyans that they should also be ready to hold their elections peacefully next year August. “We are ready for the new President, but as Americans conclude their elections, Kenyans must be ready to hold a peaceful election next year,” Godec said.

AMERICAN DECISION

President-elect Donald Trump praises Clinton Donald Trump has heaped praise on rival Hillary Clinton with whom they fought tooth and nail for the US presidency. Mr Trump won the election and has been declared President-elect. Democratic contestant Clinton swiftly congratulated Mr Trump upon his clinching of the required 270 Electoral College votes to be declared the winner. “I just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us on, and it’s about us, on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard fought campaign,” President-elect Donald Trump said as he began his victory speech. “She fought hard. Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. I mean that very seriously,” Trump who at one time said Mrs Clinton should be jailed said in an apparent change of tone. “Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division,” he added He continued: “It is time for us to come together as one united people.” “Ours was not a campaign, but rather, an incredible and great movement.” And in setting out his vision, Trump said every American citizen will be given the chance to fully exploit and realise their potential. “Every single American will have the opportunity to realize his or her fullest potential,” Donald Trump said in his victory speech. “The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. We are going to fix our inner cities

and rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none.” He also promised not to let the American people down. “I promise you I will not let you down, we’ll do a great job,” he told his supporters. And he said at the “end of two, maybe three ... maybe eight years” they will agree. “Our work on this movement is really now just beginning. We’re going to get to work immediately for the American people,” he

Why Hillary Clinton lost Hillary Clinton just couldn’t hold onto the Obama coalition. And that proved to be a large part of her undoing. African-American, Latino and younger voters failed to show up at the polls in sufficient numbers Tuesday to propel Clinton into the White House. Clinton conceded the race after 2 a.m. ET. Before polls closed her campaign had been confident of victory. In the end, however, she lost even some states thought to be safely in her column, like Wisconsin. She trailed in others, like Pennsylvania and Michigan. While she won the key demographic groups her campaign targeted, she underperformed President Obama across the board, even among women, according to exit poll data. A slightly larger share of black and Latino voters cast ballots for Trump than supported Mitt Romney in 2012, despite Trump’s disparaging remarks on AfricanAmericans, Mexicans and undocumented immigrants. President Barack Obama, who captured the presidency with the help of the African-American and Latino communities, issued several personal pleas to black voters to back Clinton in recent weeks. But not enough African-Americans, along with Latinos, heeded the call. Some 88% of African-American voters supported Clinton, versus 8% for Donald Trump, as of very early Wednesday morning. While that’s a large margin, it’s not as big as Obama’s victory over Mitt Romney in 2012. Obama locked up 93% of the black vote to Romney’s 7%.

added. “I love this country,” he said before closing his victory speech with a thank you. Mr Trump had been criticized for his foreign policy but he said he will work together with other nations for peace. “We will get along with all other nations willing to get along with us. We will get along fairly with everyone,” he said, and seek “partnership, not conflict,” he said. @sam_x254

Donald Trump shattered expectations on Tuesday with an election night victory that revealed deep anti-establishment anger among American voters and set the world on a journey into the political unknown. Global financial markets fell as US allies convened emergency meetings of their financial and security agencies to assess the impact of Republican candidate Donald Trump’s ascension to the White House. Trump’s election as the 45th president of the United States rocked Washington’s political establishment and sent shock waves overseas, as US allies and foes alike scrambled to understand how the real-estate mogul and political outsider had pulled off an upset victory and would change their ties to the world’s most powerful country. South Korea called a meeting of its National Security Council as Japan’s top financial officials huddled amid a 1,000-point plunge in the Nikkei stock market. Markets in the UK and France also dropped. US futures also plummeted, as international observers grappled for analogies and images to convey their discomfort, dismay and disgust. Many referred to the shock of watching Britain vote to leave the European Union in a June referendum, the so-called “Brexit.” After his victory was confirmed, Trump left Trump Tower for the short journey to the Hilton Midtown, where the president elect then took to the stage and insisted he would “deal fairly with everyone”. “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans,” he said. This is a historic night,” said vice-president-elect Mike Pence. “The American people have spoken and the American people have elected their new cham.

NEWS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2016

Sack your deputy, Unionists tell President Civil servants union has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to sack high ranking officials in his government who have been linked to corruption. And in an apparently reference to Deputy President William Ruto, the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) led by outspoken unionist Wilson Sossion said the president has to sack ‘the man hiding behind his back’ if he has to win the war against graft. Sossion further argued that President Kenyatta cannot win the fight against corruption with his going round the country exchanging publicly with those facing graft cases. The union now wants Mr Kenyatta to clean his cabinet without mercy and have persons of integrity to help him run the government. During the weekend, Deputy President William Ruto and former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru exchanged bitter words over the Sh791 million National Youth Service (NYS) scandal. Mr Ruto told off Ms Waiguru to take responsibility for the scandal as she was the one in charge of the NYS project when the millions of shillings were stolen. However, Waiguru hit back saying that the DPs accusations and defence were a enough telling of his involvement in the scam. “We are asking the president to deal ruthlessly with those involved in graft especially the one behind his back. He cannot win the battle with such people around him. They must be shed off,” Mr Sossion told a press conference in Nairobi today. He added: “President Kenyatta should address the nation immediately and after every three months thereafter on the progress of the war on graft as this evil is more than any other malady that has inflicted a lot of pain on all of us.”

He warned of a month long industrial action if the president does not take action and have all the accused behind bars. “If this evil is not brought to an end, we will pull out all workers in the Public Sector from their offices and places of work to protest for

Counties blamed for disease outbreaks A lapse by county authorities to deal with solid waste management is to blame for the disease outbreaks that have hit the country, the ministry of health has said. Speaking after meeting Council of Governors officials at his Afya House office, Director of Public Health Kepha Ombacho said that there was low implementation of policies including those enacted by county government that has posed a risk to public health. The ministry now wants all county governments to take charge and address the poor state of both solid and liquid waste disposal and take measures that will restore the cleanliness and aesthetic value of towns and cities. “The ministry urges counties to appropriately provide land and standard infrastructure to safely treat and dispose off wastes since this is their responsibility as provided for under the devolved Health, Lands and Environment functions,” Mr Ombacho said. While the ministry is constitutionally directed to give policy direction and training on waste management, it is not its mandate to allocate land for garbage disposal. Ombacho maintained that waste management was a devolved function

and hence a mandate of the county governments. According to the ministry, 15,681 cases of cholera and 250 deaths had been reported across 30 counties as of May 30 this year. Many counties have been relying on the government to provide services but the Health ministry says waste management is a devolved function. While the ministry is constitutionally directed to give policy direction and training on waste management, it is not its mandate to allocate land for garbage disposal. On September, National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) launched a national solid waste management strategy in Nakuru County. The initiative followed complaints from residents in the various Nakuru sub-counties over poor waste management. During the launch, NEMA Director General, Geoffrey Wakhungu, said the initiative would solve the issues facing solid waste disposal in areas such as Subukia, Naivasha, Njoro and Nakuru Central area. According to him, with just 100 days of implementation of the project in various counties, the impact would be felt. @wilson_x254

one month to realise the end of this menace,” Mr Sossion who was accampanie by TUC Secretary general Tom Odege said. The union is also demanding that the Parliamentary Accounts Committee findings in investigations about corruption be forwarded

to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to prefer prosecution against the lords of graft. As up to now, only a few reports have been fronted to Keriako Tobiko for prosecutions. @wilson_x254

Senate wants MCAs trained on impeachment procedures The senate legal department considering training Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) on the legal procedures of impeaching a governor. Principal Legal Counsel in the senate Elizabeth Muhia said the training seeks to help MCAs follow the legal procedures involved in the impeachment of a Governor. Muhia decried the lack of following procedures and ignoring of key legal aspects by the MCAs while conducting impeachment motions. “Some of the legal procedures are so obvious and easy to undertake but are oftenly ignores by the MCAs),” Muhia said. She attributed the lack of adhering to the constitution by most MCAs as the key reason why most impeachment of motions of Governors have never been confirmed by the senate. “Senate is a house of rules and procedures, the senators know the law and when they realize MCAs didn’t follow the law as required, the drop the impeachment immediately,” Muhia said. “Public participation is key during the impeachment, some Governors are impeached even without given an opportunity to defend themselves and that is a major setback for MCAs when senate finally discuss the matter,” she added.

Currently, Muhia said they only train legal advisers of the County Assemblies on the basic legal procedures of management of counties. “We will extend the training to the Members of the County Assemblies who are actually engaged directly involved in the impeachment process,” Muhia said. Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua became the fourth governor to be recommended for impeachment by his ward representatives after Embu Governor Martin Wambora, Kericho’s Paul Chepkwony and Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria. Gachagua was however saved by the senate after all the allegations against him were dropped by the senate. Only Wambora had allegations against him confirmed while Chepkwony and Wa Iria retained their jobs after Senators dropped the allegations levelled against them. Director of committee services in the senate Samuel Njenga said most MCAs don’t listen when given advice on such procedures hence end up suffering at the end. “We like dealing with the technical advisers of the assemblies because the MCAs don’t listen and rarely heeds to the advice given,” Njenga said.

Loan growth, cost management lift KCB pre-tax profit to Sh22.9 billion Strong loan growth in its Kenya business and prudent costs management initiatives helped push KCB Group’s pre-tax profit up 18.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2016. During the period under review, profit before tax for the nine months ending September 30, 2016 rose to Sh22.9 billion from Sh19.3 billion during the same period last year. KCB Group CEO and MD Joshua Oigara says the group recorded a 27 per cent growth in net interest income, driven by asset book growth, better yields and a reduction in the cost of funds. “The performance reflects continued resilience across the seven markets that we operate in. The business benefitted largely from a diversified income structure, prudent cost management and deliberate investments in infrastructure and digital channels,” said Mr. Oigara while releasing the results. “The third quarter financials showed that total expenses increased by 7 per cent to support business growth, investment in channels and infrastructure. Provisions for bad debts reduced by 11 per cent to Sh3.4 billion in September 2016 while overall Group gross nonperforming loans declined by Sh1.9 billion on a quarter to quarter basis on the back of enhanced Credit processes and recoveries,” the lender said in a statement. while consolidating the international business. “We see the new fin-tech capabilities giving us a strong business position and stable performance in the coming years as the future of banking shifts into digital,” he said. The financials indicate that net loans and advances were up 5 per cent from Sh347.6 billion to Sh364.5 billion during the period largely driven by the Kenya business, which registered an 8 per cent growth. @enock_x254

Firms gear up for India-Kenya expo as investors eye Sh14 billion drug market

The India Engineering Expo kicked off today as more than 70 firms eye millions of shillings worth of deals during the latest edition of the event. Companies will be seeking to set up shop in Kenya as well as joint ventures with other companies and investors in the country. Bhaskar Sarkar, the India Engineering Export Promotion Council’s Executive Director and Secretary said the companies deal with pharmaceutical and packaging machinery, agricultural machinery and equipment, medical and dental products among others. Some of the leading engineering firms from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad are taking part in the Expo. He said Indian companies are eyeing the growing Kenyan pharmaceutical and healthcare market that is estimated at Sh14.6 billion annually. “The growth in the sector will be boosted by the strong demographics, increased healthcare need, longer life expectancy, rising healthcare spending in the public and private sectors and improved access to health facilities, “he said. The previous Expo, held in February 2016, drew in more than 2,500 business visitors, generating Sh26 million worth of orders and Sh3.3 billion worth of inquiries. Meanwhile, 88 per cent of participants established business contacts. “The Expo offers another opportunity for India to cement commercial ties with Kenya and neighbouring African nations, particularly with members of the East African Community (EAC),” he added.

Credit Bank clients to access pension Court gives KDIC and CBK green light to transfer of IBL’s assets and liabilities services as lender signs deal with CPF continue The High Court has given June 21, 2016, KDIC, with the cumulative payout ratio for all Credit Bank has signed a partnership agreement with CPF Financial Services to extend its Mobile Pension products to the lender’s customers. Under the agreement, Credit Bank will incorporate M-Pension in its own product bouquets and include it in its SME Banking Segment. Credit Bank will also offer CPF’s M-pension optional savings to its customers. CPF is the administrator of CPF (Individual) Pension Scheme, which owns M- Pension. M-Pension allows users to put aside money for retirement daily, weekly and monthly by saving as little as Sh50 though users can also make lump sum contributions. The product includes life cover and last expense benefits for members. CPF Group Managing Director, Hosea Kili said the partnership with Credit Bank was part of its strategy to encourage more Kenyans to save through promoting convenient and flexible saving terms. “The partnership with Credit Bank will enable CPF leverage on its current network across Kenya to enable more

Kenyans to have a more financially secure future,” he explained. Credit Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Chege Thumbi said the partnership with CPF was part of its commitment to deliver cost effective innovative financial service solutions to its customers. “The goal of this partnership with CPF is to offer our customers a product with tangible value that will help them enjoy the life today with a secured tomorrow. The Bank has a strategic focus to be an institution of choice offering financial solutions across key market segments driven by efficiency, innovation and technology,” said Thumbi. The bank, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, has seventeen branches dotted across the country. The level of retirement savings in the country is still very low, with the bulk of workers lacking access to occupational pension schemes through which they can channel their retirement savings. “There are very few companies offering social security products that offer an efficient and affordable pension scheme,” said Kili.

the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) permission to continue the transfer of assets and liabilities of Imperial Bank Limited (IBL). On February 9, 2016 the shareholders of Imperial Bank Limited (In Receivership) (IBLR) filed a case in the High Court in which certain declarations were sought. In the course of the proceedings, orders were issued restraining KDIC and the CBK from any process that would lead to the exclusion and transfer of assets and liabilities of IBLR. In a judgment delivered on November 4, 2016, the Court lifted the suspension, which has paved the way for KDIC and CBK to continue with the process they had announced and initiated. On

endorsement of CBK effected an agreement appointing NIC Bank Limited (NIC) as the Asset and Liabilities Consultant for IBLR. The KDIC and NIC agreement, mandates NIC to disburse on behalf of KDIC a maximum of an additional Sh1.5 million each to the remaining IBLR depositors,. In addition, the agreement provided that NIC would undertake an assessment of the quality of IBLR’s assets and liabilities, support the recovery of IBLR’s loans, and following negotiations, assume certain assets and liabilities as well as the majority of IBLR staff. It was expected that through this process depositors will be granted structured access to about 40 per cent of the remaining amount of verified deposits above Sh2.5 million, which would bring the

verified deposits to about 59 per cent. The Court found that KDIC and CBK had at all times considered the proposals put forward by the shareholders, and the Court was satisfied that the shareholders were given reasons why their proposals were unacceptable, and that the shareholders were neither discriminated against, nor were their rights violated. KDIC and CBK will continue the processes that were suspended by the Court, and in particular, NIC’s due diligence and contract review, which is expected to lead to structured access to the remaining deposits. Going forward, KDIC and CBK will continue to engage all stakeholders concerning the next steps in the resolution for IBLR, as permitted by the law. @kevin_x254

vehicle distributor, CMC Motors has renewed its market focus on the large passenger bus segment with the delivery to market of the German Engineered MAN model buses. The firm’s strategic focus on the large vehicles with a capacity to carry 67

passengers will see CMC Motors raising its sales, marketing and service ante for the locally-assembled buses. Ahead of the festive season, CMC Motors has managed to close a deal to deliver 20 MAN Bus units to West Kenya based overland transport firm

Climax Transport Ltd. The operator of the popular ‘Climax’ christened buses operates from Nairobi to Kisumu, Eldoret, Kitale, Webuye and Busia among other destinations. The entry of the MAN models has been hailed as a game changer for CMC Motors. Speaking when he confirmed the firm’s strategic focus, CMC Motors Managing Director, Wanjohi Kangangi said the MAN model introduced into the local market has been tropicalized to meet demanding local conditions for passenger buses. CMC Motors, he added, will also be

providing comprehensive after sales service for MAN Bus customers. He noted that an initial test project with Climax Transport Company earlier on in the year had inspired an order of 20 MAN buses. Overall, the order book for the MAN buses, he disclosed is fast growing as local operators continue to appreciate the quality of engineering and seamless bodybuilding advantages provided by Thika based Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers (KVM) for CMC Motors customers. CMC Motors Divisional Manager for Commercial Vehicles, David Wamathu, while commenting on the

MAN model introduced in the local market said: “At CMC Motors, we have been working on a collaborative tropicalization programme with our MAN counterparts in Germany geared at delivering a comfortable, passenger safety and fuel economy superior bus engine and chassis for the local market.” “We are delighted to have an ambassador of Climax’s calibre confirm that the Germans did what they are best known for – outstanding technical solutions. BASF launches new campaign to address food security crisis WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2016

BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, has developed a new campaign aimed at celebrating farmers across the globe and supporting agriculture to enable increasing production of enough food for the burgeoning world population estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050. Dubbed ‘Farming, the biggest job on earth,’ the drive is a campaign that seeks to assist farmers in accessing the latest farming innovations, ensuring soil remains healthy and connecting farmers to high quality, fast maturing drought tolerant seed varieties. The campaign is timely, especially in Kenya, coming at a time when recent reports have indicated that the country is struggling to feed its population. A Global Hunger Index by the International Food Policy Research Institute has found that Kenya is among 50 countries where levels of hunger remain serious or alarming, with one in every five Kenyans being undernourished and one in four children being stunted, putting the country marginally ahead of conflictprone Iraq. “In 1960 the total agricultural areas was 4,300 meter square per head, in 2005 it shrunk to 2200 and by 2030 this will shrink further to 1800. This means that the same parcel of land, has been feeding more people. Population grows, land does not. The only way we can ensure that parcel of land can continue feeding more mouths is make it more productive through innovation,” said Gift Mbaya, Sub Hub Manager for Crop Protection & Public Health at BASF East Africa Ltd. Mr. Mbaya was speaking during the

Carles Amengual Managing Director BASF East Africa speaking about the ‘Farming, the greatest job on earth’ campaign at the Laico Regency Hotel in Nairobi. National Farmer’s Awards 2016. “At BASF we create chemistry to equip farmers with the skills needed to improve productivity. It is for this reason that we see Farming as the biggest job on earth because our lives begin with eating. The person who produces the food, the most basic of human needs has the biggest job to do. The future for all of us is in the farmers’ hands. Making every seed count,” he added. “BASF is working with farmers to keep the soil fertile and fruitful with the

right amounts of water and nutrients. Stewarding the land and planning for the future” reiterated Mr Mbaya. Without technology, experts have found that food production becomes a herculean task, explaining why BASF is supporting farmers to access innovation, solutions and experts to enable them to improve productivity, increase efficiency, and stay at the cutting edge of their profession ensuring growing demands are met, year after year. BASF East Africa Ltd, the regional

sales hub for the East African market, was established in Kenya in mid-2011 and is responsible for 13 countries, namely: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Madagascar (focus countries), Eritrea, Djibouti, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, Mauritius and Somalia. BASF East Africa has approximately 45 employees at any one time. The company is leading 3 legal entities; one in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. In addition to this, BASF in East Africa has also has 3 smaller production sites.

Telkom Kenya appoints new CFO as firm moves to beef up internet services with undersea cables Telkom Kenya has appointed Sundararaman Pattabiraman as its Chief Finance Officer just as the firm has unveiled plans to upgrade its fibre optic cable network. Pattabiraman’s appointment comes as Telkom Kenya moves to bolster the company’s senior management team as the exodus of France Telkom-backed executives continues at Orange Kenya. Pattabiraman joins Telkom Kenya from Safaricom Limited, where he was the Head of Finance, Planning and Analysis, replacing François Bresson who resigned from the company. He joins John Barorot, former Chief Technical Officer at Safaricom, who was appointed CTIO at Telkom Kenya. “I am extremely pleased to have Mr. Pattabiraman lead our Finance functions and serve as our Chief Finance Officer,” said Telkom Kenya CEO, Aldo Mareuse. “He has distinguished himself as an exceptional leader with a proven track record. He has a strong knowledge of the Kenyan telecommunications market and has broad

experience from both the market leader and challenger.” Telkom Kenya this month confirmed plans to set up multiple undersea fibre optic cables linking the country to international internet connectivity. The move seeks to reduce the frequency of internet disruptions and will beef up Telkom Kenya’s current back-up plan to migrate its international Internet traffic to other undersea cables during cable cuts and maintenance. Telkom Kenya Managing Director for Carrier Services, and George Mokogi said that Kenyan telcos should provide other redundancy routes through investment in additional infrastructure lines. “For Telkom Kenya, protection of the undersea cable to us means providing other routes of redundancy to the nation for internet connectivity to the international world such that should there be any cuts services aren’t compromised,” said Mr Mokogi who was speaking at an undersea cable sector stakeholder forum in Mombasa.

Equity’s digital banking strategy to target SMEs, corporates through Equitel

Equity Bank plans to process loans for its corporate and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through its Equitel mobile and other digital platforms. Equity Bank says its Equitel mobile platform has the cognitive analytics to assess risk and make credit decisions for this class of customers. “By December we will have digitised SME, asset finance, mortgage and other loans,” said Equity Group CEO Dr. James Mwangi while releasing the bank’s third quarter results. The bank will be able to process Eazzy loans to corporate customers for as much as Ksh12.5 billion through its digital platforms. Equitel users can borrow up to Ksh3 million payable within 12 months through the “Eazzy Loan” products. Equitel more than doubled the number of transactions the mobile platform processed in the third quarter of 2016 when compared with a similar period a year before. ACCESS XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS HAVE ARISEN IN THE UK DUE TO RESTRICTED IMMIGRATION INTO THE ISLE.

2016 has been an absolute dumpster fire of a year. Never has so many tragedies and catastrophes; let’s not forget the ridiculous game that this year seem to be playing on each one of us, happened in the span of 300 and some days before.

PRINCE

Shocking moments from the year so far So many beloved celebrity deaths

We should have seen this year’s messiness coming when on 31st December 2015 music legend and daughter of icon Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, died from congestive heart failure. Which was then followed by the double whammy of David Bowie and Alan Rickman dying within days of each other the following month. We can’t forget Prince whose music touched generations of people, boxing legend and GOAT Muhammad Ali, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, world famous author Harper Lee, hip hop artiste Phife Dawg, beloved actor Gene Wilder and of course Congolese ndombolo legend Papa Wemba all lost their lives this year. Achieng Abura and Grace Makosewe are some of the closest losses to home we have felt.

Brexit

the socio-economic implications of this move have already started taking root. Xenophobic attacks have arisen in the UK due to restricted immigration into the isle. Although the UK enjoys an impressive racial and ethnic diversity this might be apparently working against highlighted the divide between younger citizens and older ones who are responsible for the majority of the ‘leave’ votes.

The Syrian crisis

Every time we turn on the television on listen

to the radio, without fail there will be mention of the Syrian crisis, that believe it or not has the Arab Spring. With America and Russia throwing their weight behind opposing sides getting a face. Not a great one by all accounts, pictures of wounded or dead children caught up. President Bashar al-Assad’s government and ISIS have been accused of mass killings, torture, starvation and mass rapes as the Syrian Which has then caused an immigration debate in Europe (that is then tenuously tied to Brexit).

The 2016 election

Donald Trump, entrepreneur, TV producer and somehow politician is the next President-elect of the United States of America. Politicians have many times been accused of spewing rhetoric on their way to the top but never has anyone wanted it to be truer than right now. Trump has jumped through every hurdle imaginable to become POTUS, most of these wounds have his foot in his mouth many times during the election period but still has somehow reached in a corner as this story develops. @christine_x254

Barca appeal Messi booking

Barcelona are appealing the yellow card shown to Lionel Messi for time wasting during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Sevilla. The Argentina forward was booked in the second half as he attempted to put his boot back on after it had come off following a challenge by Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi. Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said afterwards that the 29-year-old’s laces were broken. Messi scored his 500th goal for the club in the game.

Peres Jepchirchir reacts after winning the women’s race at the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championship in Britain early this year.

Jepchirchir eyes Delhi course record Kenya’s world half marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir will have the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon course record in her sights when she lines up for the IAAF Gold Label Road Race on November 20, 2016. Jepchirchir is the biggest name in the women’s elite field as the organisers released the full list of the invited international runners who will contest the 12th edition of India’s leading half marathon. She will be chasing the course record of 1:06.54 set by her compatriot Mary Keitany in 2009 and also look to extend her winning streak to four consecutive half

marathons after her recent victory in Valencia. “I’m recovering well after my race in Valencia and getting ready for the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon, where I think I can get the course record,” said Jepchirchir. “Mary’s record is a good one but my time of 1:07:09 in Valencia showed that I am in good shape, even though I was a little worried beforehand there about not having done my best training due to a few small injury problems and having changed my plans to have my marathon debut around this time. “However, I have felt no ill-effects from my run in Valencia and I am

getting ready to return to India and hope to run well again, especially if I have a month’s good training. Jepchirchir’s PB of 1:06:39, set when finishing fourth at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in February, is faster than the Delhi Half Marathon course record, so going into new territory in the Indian city is certainly not an unreasonable target. In a year which has seen Jepchirchir establish herself as one of the world’s top road runners, her race in Ras Al Khaimah has been her only loss in seven top-class outings so far in 2016. But she won’t be the fastest woman

on the start line in Delhi. Ethiopia’s Worknesh Degefa and Kenya’s Mary Wacera both have quicker half marathon personal bests, having clocked 1:06:14 and 1:06:29 respectively in races earlier this year. Additions to the men’s elite field, following the recent announcement that Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge will be racing in Delhi, include 2012 Olympic marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich. The leading men and women will be chasing first prizes of Sh2.7 million with a total prize fund of a similar amount.

Inter appoint Pioli as coach Inter Milan have named former Lazio boss Stefano Pioli as their new coach. The 51-year-old has signed a contract until the end of June 2018 at the Italian giants, who sacked Frank de Boer on 1 November after 85 days in charge. Pioli’s first game will be the Serie A match against city rivals AC Milan at the San Siro on 20 November. He is Inter’s ninth manager since Jose Mourinho left the club after winning the Champions League in 2010. Pioli was sacked by Lazio in April and includes Parma and Bologna among the 11 clubs he has previously coached. He inherits an Inter side ninth in Serie A, 13 points behind leaders Juventus, and bottom of their Europa League group after a 2-1 defeat at Southampton on 3 November.

“Oooh! Ooooh! Olunga! Olunga! Olunga! Ooooh!”…. IF Djugardens fans chanted after the final whistle of the club’s last league match of the season, a 5-2 rout over GIF Sundsvall in which Olunga scored a brace and gave an assist. The twin goals at the Norrporten Arena took his season tally to 12, ranking him as the fifth best scorer in the Swedish top tier in his debut season five off top scorer Nigerian John Owoeri who turns out for Hacken. “I want to thank God for everything he has done in my life. Thanks for the two goals today and for finishing my first season with 12 goals for my team Djurgadens IF. I want to thank all my fans who have stood by me during the bad times and good times,” Olunga

posted on his Facebook page after the match. Djugardens finished the season seventh on the log with 43 points, with Malmo winning the title after finishing the season with 66 points, six ahead AIK and Norkoping who finished second and third respectively. The former Tusker and Gor Mahia forward endured a difficult start to his first stint outside Kenya, but managed to settle in well at midseason and has been banging goals for fun for the side, endearing himself to the club’s faithful who in turn responded to chanting his name. The striker is expected to lead the line over the next international break for the national team Harambee Stars when they take on Liberia and Mozambique in Nairobi.

He has been named in head coach Stanbley Okumbi’s 12-man foreign based players list which also includes the returning Clifton Miheso who has been impressive for his South African club Golden Arrows. Rama Salim has been excluded from the squad to take care of matters between him and his Slovakian club while Belgium based winger Ayub Timbe will miss the two matches with injury. After missing the last friendly match against DR Congo, skipper Victor Wanyama returns to the squad. The team started training on Sunday evening and is set to play Mozambique on Saturday with the second match against Liberia being played three days later on Tuesday. Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez suffers injury with Chile

A

rsenal forward Alexis Sanchez has picked up a “low grade muscle injury” on international duty with Chile. It means the 27-year-old will miss Chile’s World Cup qualifier in Colombia tomorrow. But the Chilean team’s medical staff say the former Barcelona player could return for the home game against Uruguay next Tuesday. “He will remain in Santiago, under treatment and in evaluation for the meeting against Uruguay,” said a statement. Sanchez, who has scored eight goals for the Gunners this season, played the whole 90 minutes of Sunday’s 1-1 home draw against Tottenham. Fourth-placed Arsenal go to Manchester United on 19 November in their next fixture after the international break.

G

areth Bale has been named Wales’ player of the year for the sixth time. It is the fourth successive year the 27-yearold Real Madrid forward has won the accolade. Stoke midfielder Joe Allen won two awards players’ and fans’ player of the year - while Exeter’s Ethan Ampadu, 16, was named young player of the year. Natasha Harding was named women’s player of the year, and Sophie Ingle won the women’s players’ and fans’ player of the year awards. Bronwen Thomas was named women’s young player of the year, while Phil Baker of The New

The media choice award went to Wales and Reading defender Chris Gunter, and there was also a ‘special award’ from the Football Association of Wales for manager Chris Coleman, who has been nominated for Fifa’s men’s coach of the year. Bale’s award caps a memorable year in which he helped Wales reach the Euro 2016 semi-finals - their first at a major tournament - and won a second Champions League title with Real. Allen also played a prominent role in Wales’ historic campaign in France and was rewarded with a place in Uefa’s official team of the tournament.

Four additional award were presented to mark Wales’ performance at Euro 2016. Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey was named Wales’ player of the tournament while Hal RobsonKanu won the Welsh goal of the tournament award for his goal in the quarter-final against Belgium. Defender Ben Davies goal saving block to deny Slovakia’s Marek Hamsík in the opening minutes of the opening game was named the moment of the tournament.
