Another showdown looms in parliament tomorrow Union officials to appear in court tomorrow after defying court order to return to work
The Kenya Medical Practitioner, Pharmacist and Dentist Union official will tomorrow know their fate after the Labour relations court ruled that they should be punished for a contempt of court offense. Labour Court Judge Hellen Wasilwa ruled that the officials are guilty of blatantly disobeying court orders after failed to resume duty as ordered by the court. The court had on December 1st ordered the union to hold off the industrial action for 30 days to allow for negotiations, but doctors proceeded to stage picket on December 5. While giving the ruling on an application by Council of Governors seeking punishment of doctors for holding the strike, the judge said that the court will not shy away with dealing with contempt, adding that the court has to safeguard the dignity of the law. Other business set to be debated tomorrow is the third reading of the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill.. During the yesterday’s special sitting Speaker Justin Muturi was ultimately forced to adjourn debate at 8.38pm after both sides failed to agree on whether the session was time barred or not. Cord Mps protested the extension of time, insisting that it was unprocedural to move debate past 6.30pm without notifying the Speaker half an hour

before the time. Tempers flared in the National Assembly when Muturi ruled that he had the discretion to use standing order number 256 which gives him powers to extend debate time. “We commenced our morning sitting at midday while the order paper had stated that the sitting starts at 9.30am. There is need, therefore, to recover the lost time,” Muturi said. He then ruled that the House sit for a further 55 minutes to cover the balance of the time lost during the morning chaos but then called off debate till January 24 as the impasse persisted. The Opposition Mps managed to temporarily blocked amendments to the country’s new election law.The Mps argued that the laws can only be changed through consultation between the leading coalitions. The Rongo Mp said there is need for consultation between Cord and Jubilee over the matter before the amendments are made. Budalangi Mp Ababu Namwamba said the signs of the 2007 post-election violence are very evident and said there is need for consultation and a negotiated process between Jubilee and Cord. The Jubilee party’s contention is that 10 per cent of the country has no network coverage and that only 17 per cent of the country has 3G network coverage and therefore the Electoral commission should be allowed to revert to the manual system should the electronic method fail. @sam_x254

Donors,Civil societies condemn government Donors from Western nations and the civil societies have continued to condemn the government’s move to cancel the license of the International Federation of Electoral Systems (IFES). US Ambassador to Kenya, Robert Godec, the envoys said their assistance focuses on supporting Kenyans to independently exercise their right to vote. “The Kenyan people alone have the sovereign right to choose their leaders, and we fully respect this right,” they said, even as six civil society organisations demanded that the government desists from attacking domestic and international election support agencies. The Civil Society led by their convener Suba Churchill said the cancellation of the Kenya Electoral Assistance Programme (KEAP) which was to be implemented by the International Federation of Electoral Systems (IFES), in partnership with local civil society organizations was a major drawback

to the country’s preparedness ahead of next year’s poll. “Government should harness the contribution of the civil society for the good of the people instead of spending all its time and energy fighting and denigrating the sector. It is not the first time that the Jubilee government
has frustrated implementation of such programs,” Churchill said. He added: “The Ministry of Devolution and Planning in 2014, then under the stewardship of Anne Waiguru declined to sign for support from the European Union because the resources were to be managed by county governments
and not the national government.” They now want the NGO coordination’s board to withdraw its circular stopping the implementation of the Kenya Electoral Assistance Programme with immediate effect. Donors from western nations too have condemned the state even as they refuted claims refuted claims that they are financing electoral programs to meddle in the electoral process as claimed by the Jubilee government. On Monday, the government stopped a Sh2 billion electoral programme by an American NGO, IFES, and citing breach of laws. NGO Coordination Board Executive Director Fazul Mahammed said the organisation had not been registered and therefore could not operate in the country. According to Churchill, IFES was to receive financing from the USAid and the money would to be channeled to various local NGOs. In their defense to accusation of
planned attempts to influence elections, western nations diplomats said any programs their countries support are done in the open. “We operate with full transparency. Our solicitations for project proposals are, and always have been, publicly available. In accordance with our bilateral agreements, we have created our electoral assistance programmes in consultation with government, political party, and civil society leaders, who identified weaknesses in the 2013 electoral process that would benefit from international support,” said the diplomats. The NGOs board also demanded that the employees of IFES to be probed as they had not registered by them nor had they obtained a work permit from the Principal Immigration Officer. Fireworks kills at least 29 people in Mexico market while scores injured At least 29 people have been killed after an explosion at a fireworks market outside Mexico City earlier today. Majority of other people were injured as the blast hit the San Pablito fireworks market, about 20 miles (32km) outside the city. Dozens of paramedics and police attended the scene. The cause of the explosions is not yet known. Locals have been told to avoid the area and keep roads clear. Officials said a number of children were among those who were badly burned, on up to 90 percent of their bodies. Fireworks continued to explode after the initial blast, as smoke billowed from the area in thick black clouds. Photos from police and medical personnel at the scene showed several injured people among the destroyed market stalls, with brick buildings scorched by the heat. “The sound of blasts started to go off and we thought it was a nearby fireworks workshop,” a local local resident However, she said it soon became clear the entire market was at risk. “My neighbours said they felt everything shake, but I didn’t realise because I was running away,” she said. “People were crying everywhere and desperately running in all directions,” said 20-year-old witness Cesar Carmona. “I offer my condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in this accident and my wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured,” President Enrique Pena Nieto said in a tweet. More than 80 percent of the 300 stalls at the market were destroyed by the explosion, said state official Jose Manzur. Local media reported there were 300 tonnes of fireworks at the market at the time of the explosion. The president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, tweeted condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, and wished a speedy recovery to
the injured. He also said members of the defence forces were assisting in the emergency. The San Pablito market was heavily damaged by similar fires in September 2005, when a chain of explosions just before the country’s Independence Day celebrations injured dozens of people. The federal police said it had sent a forensic team to investigate the incident, adding at least 70 people had been injured.

Obama bans Oil drilling in Northwest of US for future leasing US President Barack Obama has permanently banned offshore oil and gas drilling in the “vast majority” of US-owned northern waters. Obama designated areas in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans as “indefinitely off limits” to future leasing. The move is widely seen as an attempt to protect the region before Mr Obama
leaves office in January. Supporters of president-elect Donald Trump could find it difficult to reverse the decision. Canada also committed to a similar measure in its own Arctic waters, in a joint announcement with Washington. The White House said the decision was for “a strong, sustainable and

viable Arctic economy and ecosystem.” It cited native cultural needs, wildlife concerns, and the “vulnerability” of the region to oil spills as some of the reasons for the ban. But while Canada will review the move every five years, the White House insists Mr Obama’s declaration is permanent. The decision relies on a 1953 law which allows the president to ban leasing of offshore resources indefinitely. During the election campaign, Donald Trump said he would take advantage of existing US oil reserves, prompting concern from environmental groups. But supporters have already suggested that any attempt to reverse the “permanent” decision outlined by the law would be open to a legal challenge. Reacting to the Arctic declaration, Friends of the Earth said: “No president has ever rescinded a previous president’s permanent withdrawal of offshore areas from oil and gas development. “If Donald Trump tries to reverse President Obama’s withdrawals, he
will find himself in court.” However, the American Petroleum Institute said “there is no such thing as a permanent ban,” and that it hoped Mr Trump’s administration would simply reverse the decision. The ban is a huge boost for conservation in the fragile waters of the Arctic - and for campaigners urging action against climate change. The oil industry has a bad safety record in northern waters already. In 1989 the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground in Alaska, spilling hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil, polluting 1,300 miles of coastline. Some of the oil endures, and some animal species have yet to recover. In 2014, Shell’s drilling rig the Kulluk also ran aground in the Arctic’s tempestuous seas. The firm subsequently halted Arctic exploration. Northern waters are so cold that it takes bacteria much longer to break up oil products than in the warm waters of the Gulf. And the drilling conditions are among the most challenging on
Earth. President Obama is heeding advice from scientists warning that humans have already discovered three times more fossil fuels than we can burn without risking the climate. Oil firms will still want to explore for further profits, though. And the next secretary of state, Exxon’s Rex Tillerson, may offer the industry a route round the ban by paving the way to an Arctic drilling deal with Russia. Mr Trump has also raised fears among some environmental campaigners through his choices for senior White House roles. Rex Tillerson, chief of oil company Exxon Mobil, has been named his secretary of state. His energy secretary, Rick Perry, has previously called for less regulation of the oil industry in his role as governor of Texas. Environmental groups strongly criticised both appointments. Very little oil drilling currently takes place in the Arctic region, as it is more expensive and difficult than other available options.

KBA cautions consumers amid rising cases of card fraud
WedNesdaY deceMBeR 21, 2016
The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has urged consumers to remain vigilant this festive season, citing cases of payment card fraud that have cost both citizens and the banking sector billions of shillings in losses. In a statement issued just hours ago, the KBA called on the general public to keep their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) safe and secret. The Authority’s warning comes amid rising cases of credit card fraud, which have prompted banking industry stakeholders to take extra precautions. Earlier this year, Interswitch East Africa introduced two advanced fraud control systems in Kenya known as Card Control and Scorebridge intended to further enhance fraud security for cardholders and financial institutions. The financial services firm said the card based fraud prevention systems will add a new layer of protection for consumers and financial institutions, over and above the new EMV (Chip and PIN) cards introduced in Kenya over the last two years. On Scorebridge, Interswitch said financial institutions will have access to a “real- time rules engine” and artificial intelligence technologies-enabling a real time analysis of financial transactions to determine whether they should be authorized or declined. Speaking at an event to launch the systems, Interswitch East Africa, CEO Bernard Matthewman, said customers and banks using the systems will

KCB donates Sh3m for drought response in at-risk counties
Kenya’s largest commercial bank, KCB, has donated Sh3million to the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) towards drought alleviation in counties that are in urgent need of food assistance. Currently, 1.3 million people Kenyans are acutely food insecure and in need of assistance. It is expected that food insecurity across most pastoral areas is likely to worsen in early 2017 and be more widespread than previously projected due to substantial drops in livestock productivity and income (FewsNet 2016). The Kenya Red Cross Society, with support from partners, has been implementing a variety of interventions to support communities cope with the ongoing drought among them; the Cash Transfer Project (CTP), In kind food distributions and Livestock off-Take program.
The funds will further support the affected communities by improving their health, water access, sanitation and hygiene, nutrition and food security. Through the Cash Transfer Program, the donation will benefit families in Ijara and North Tana areas, in Garissa and Tana River Counties respectively. These are among the hardest hit by the ongoing drought in the country. “We believe this contribution will transform the lives of the communities in Garissa and Tana River as part of our social responsibility investments,” said Joshua Oigara, KCB Group CEO and MD while handing over the cheque to the Kenya Red Cross Society. “We have a duty as the corporate sector to give back to communities we work within in order to drive sustainability of our nation.” @kevin_x254
staff at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)were implicated in an alleged $350 million (Sh3.5 billion) fraud case over several years at one of the country’s midsized lenders, the lender’s shareholders claim in court documents filed barely two weeks ago. Documents filed by the banks’ shareholders in their defense and counterclaim to a negligence lawsuit filed by the Central Bank indicate that about half a dozen officials at the CBK colluded with senior executives at Imperial Bank to hide millions of dollars in unauthorised loans and overdrafts to a slew of companies and
individuals, The filing claims the regulator failed to investigate whistleblower reports of the alleged fraud in 2012. The court filing further refers to documents that appear to show that in August 2011 Abdulmalek Janmohamed, Imperial’s then CEO, authorised for his credit card to be used to cover “all charges” for Nancy Ndungu, the wife of the then central bank governor and one other, unnamed, person, to stay for five nights at the Civa-Som International Health Resort in Thailand.

Boda boda operators set to benefit from Yamaha Riding Academy initiative WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2016
Motorcycle Assembler and distributor Yamaha Kenya, has partnered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Kenya Police Service to offer enhanced safety training for boda boda operators. Yamaha Kenya, through the Yamaha Riding Academy, will train boda boda operators across the country in partnership with the NTSA, Kenya Police Service and County Governments. Nakuru County is set to be the first county to benefit from the training, with over 20 boda boda operators drawn from different riding associations in the county receiving training from the Yamaha Riding Academy. Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Transport Eng. Maina Kairu says it has set up a county transport and safety committee to monitor the “Our County health facilities are stretched with an entire ward dedicated to injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents. We are working with boda boda associations to form cooperatives under which we train boda boda operators and develop a peer safety training system to promote safety among boda boda operators. The partnership with Yamaha and the
Yamaha Riding academy will feed into the training with those trained today passing on the knowledge to other boda boda operators,” Eng. Maina said. The County government is also offering loans of between Sh20,000 and Sh300,000 over a 24-month repayment period at a rate of 8 per cent to empower county businesses including boda boda operators to buy their own assets and expand their businesses. The County has set aside Sh12 million to be disbursed through a special fund under its cooperatives societies department. Yamaha Division General Manager, Mr. Augustine Juma, says the training is aimed at creating awareness on safety through a specialized rider course in a bid to curb the number of fatalities associated with motorcycle accidents, particularly during the festive season. “We are rolling out the training at county level ahead of the festive season starting with Nakuru County. During these season counties experience an increase in both pedestrian and vehicle traffic as more people travel home for the festivities. The predominant mode of transport at county level is the Boda Bodas and the increase in traffic heightens the risks to operators, the vast majority of whom are untrained
riders,” Mr. Juma said. Yamaha, which is a division of Toyota Kenya, is also looking to empower boda boda riders to act as safety ambassadors at County level. Toyota Kenya, Managing Director Mr. Sachio Yotsukura said that Yamaha Kenya has developed its own internal capacity to train motorcycle riders on the safe use of motorcycles and will continue to partner with the NTSA, Kenya Police Service and County governments to offer safety training for riders across the country. ‘Counties now have to cope with a
growing number of accidents and road fatalities associated with motorcycle accidents. This stretches county resources especially at health facilities. As a Manufacturer and supplier of high quality motorcycles we at Yamaha will continue investing in incorporating new safety technology in all our products. We can however not ignore the most important element of all which is the human factor, all stakeholders must invest in improving the skills available to boda boda operators.’ Mr. Yotsukura said. According the National Transport and
Safety Authority (NTSA), the number of road fatalities associated with Motorcycle related accidents having increased by 23 per cent as at the end of June 2016 compared to the same period last year. Nairobi County leads in the number of fatalities resulting from road accidents, followed by Nakuru County. The safety training by Yamaha Riding Academy is set to be rolled out to other counties in 2017 through partnerships with county governments and Boda Boda Associations.

HOMEGROWN STORIES THAT YOU READ ABOUT IN 2016 Hold on to your seats 2016 was as strange as they come. This year was full of high drama in spades.
HOT TOPICS
Mariah Carey does not know Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato

Q
ueen of throwing shade, singer Mariah Carey, in an interview with Andy Cohen on his show ‘Watch What Happens Live’ claimed to have no clue about the two singers when host Cohen broached the subject. Asking, “Demi Lovato shaded you on social media. What would you say to her?” Mariah then responded with, “I don’t know her either, and so I wouldn’t say anything to her.” This comes a few months after Demi Lovato stood up for Ariana Grande following insults online that claimed the latter was the poor man’s version of Mariah Carey. Demi Lovato’s full post online read, “Mariah is a legend and is so talented but consistently disses people. . . It’s nasty the way she treats Jennifer [Lopez]. Mariah is mean for no reason. Extremely talented? Yes. Superhuman? Possibly. Unnecessarily rude? Absolutely.”
Jaguar ‘
introduces new act, Alpha
Kigeugeu’ singer Jaguar continues to take budding musicians under his wing, giving band Zikki their big break into the industry. Now comes a rare find in singer Alpha who has a true grass to grace success story. “My Producer spotted Alpha 2 years ago singing at a dump site as he gathered used
plastics to resell in Gikomba. Being a street boy, that at the time was the only genuine source of income he had. Despite his musical talents we realised he lacked all basic needs. We decided to take him in as we figured out how to nature his musical talent. It’s been 2 years of mentorship and persistence and I’m happy at what he has achieved today. I wish him all the best as he joins the path I once took when I first began singing,” the singer posted on his social media.
Top 5 headlines of the year Jacob Juma’s death
Juma, was not only shocking with its timing but more so, the manner in which it happened. Jacob Juma was murdered in his car while driving past Lenana School by, still, unknown pictures of his bloodied car riddled with bullet holes hit the papers and the inconsistencies began. Autopsy reports showed that Juma’s wounds were not in harmony with the position that he was allegedly shot. Plus his wounds were covered in gauze indicating that somebody had tried to stop the bleeding. Tampered evidence, police cartels, multiple inconsistent stories, an been truly unearthed. Teargas Mondays (CORD) had the entire city under lockdown every Monday for a few weeks earlier in the year protests which were scheduled every Monday for a couple of months spilled over into Kisumu city with violence, looting and police brutality making international headlines. It wouldn’t be inaccurate to state that by the time ‘Teargas Mondays’ were done, the protesters had lost sight of the reasons behind the demonstrations. Kenya was taken through a roller-coaster of emotions during the Olympics this year. Walking away with 13 medals, the country’s National Olympic Committee handled athletes in one of the messiest ways imaginable. Julius Yego, whom we can all agree is a national treasure, was the victim of a missing ticket to one of the world’s greatest stages. Which then led to a boycott by other athletes in solidarity. David Rudisha might have won the 800-metre gold BROWN medal but NOCK somehow did not CHRIS
tickets back into Kenya. It was a proud moment but it was also a mess. Huruma building collapse
the severe state of the country’s construction industry, corruption and inequality. Although the country was experiencing heavy rains during the period, a storm should not bring a building down. Buildings go up fast in an construction and the result of this situation is a slapdash job. Locations for such constructions are also in sad condition, with many structures squeezed into a miniscule piece of land. What is worrying is that many buildings in the country are in this state and there is no telling where the next tragedy will strike. Notable deaths Achieng Abura, former First Lady Lucy Kibaki, Grace Makosewe and the aforementioned Jacob Juma were but a few of the people we lost this year. Here’s to next year being a smoother ride.

tips to help you curb drinking during the holidays
Define limits You might be letting people into your home but that does not mean that they can run amok with everything in your house. Cordon off certain areas which people will not be allowed to get into. These rooms will be where valuable and fragile items can be stored and should stay locked for the duration of the party. This also creates a boundary as to which rooms the party is limited to. Cover up your belongings Plastic wrapped furniture might scream ‘tacky’ any other time of the year but can be a lifesaver where stains and debris are concerned. Covering up your furniture will also make the cleanup process go a lot faster than the traditional bucket, brush and soap method. Cover up the furniture and the carpet with protectors and use smaller rugs if possible as they are easier to clean. Remove shoes Although it seems like an inconvenience to guests, it’s is a much better alternative to having people trudge dust, mud and dirt through your flooring. Guests will also be much less likely to spill or drop things on the floor knowing they might have to walk through it with their bare feet.
DIY
h, the holidays. Among other ways in which we will indulge, drinking buckets of alcohol might just be on the menu for some of us. A little bit of alcohol is to be expected but when surrounded by a heavy drinkers’ atmosphere it’s easy to drink more than is advisable. There are a few easy ways to make sure that you still enjoy yourself while staying healthy.
Drink slowly
Believe it or not, the faster you drink, the drunker you will become. The rate of alcohol consumption is directly
HOME IMPROVEMENT
related to the body’s blood alcohol content. If you drink fast, in this case no matter the amount, the levels of alcohol in your blood will shoot up. It doesn’t take a lot of motivation to drink even more when you are already drunk, so take it easy when downing those beers.
Drink something weak
This might work for the ladies but there seems to be some stigma attached to ‘girlie’ drinks. Just because alcohol is mixed with something non-alcoholic does not mean it will automatically challenge your manhood if you
4 3 ways to protect your Clean up early Tidying a house after a party is a drag, no doubt about that, but the longer you wait to deal with a messy home, the bigger the problem will seem. Stains and dirt will have time to set while you extend the cleanup. Set time aside and plan how you will tackle the mess in a timely manner.
Hosting year-end blow out parties can be a fun thing despite all the information proving otherwise. You can have a successful get-together while still maintaining your sanity and stuff.
TIRE RIM STOVE For this project, you need two tires which you will then tear apart and remove the rubber exterior so that you remain with the metallic inner rim. Next, place one of the two tire rims on top of the other such that the bottom rim sits upright and the upper rim sits upside down on top of it. Next, merge the two rims into one using a welding gun such that the rims now appear as an enclosed hollow stove. Using a chisel or hacksaw, cut out a relatively small piece off the surface of the bottom rim…here is where the firewood goes. Finally, weld in a grill on top of the upper rim to support your cooking pots, ensuring that you do not block the rim holes which will serve as aeration points in the stove.

Make a plan
As absurd as this sounds where drinking is concerned, plan out your drinks. Set a time limit for each drink that you consume and stick to it. This will ensure that you monitor your intake and do not overdrink at the end of the night. This will also be especially be useful when you are trying to figure out your limits.

decide to drink it. Just make sure that whatever you are mixing it with is not super-sugary because it will only add unnecessary calories to the drink.

COOL FITNESS GIFTS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON
ne of the best parts about Christmas is the gifts. Presents are great no matter how you swing it so if you have a family member or friend who is trying to get fit or a total health nut look no further, we have some awesome suggestions for you. Wireless headphones Nobody wants to go out and get the cables of their headphones in a tangled mess. The rhythm of music actually serves as an aid in finding a rhythm while working out, headphones are not an extraneous luxury after all. A pair of wireless headphones will solve this problem while still looking stylish and adding some energy to a workout. A reusable water bottle One of the pillars of an effective workout routine is hydrating. Water is life and we overlook this fact more often than not. Some forms of exercise such as running do require free hands and so lugging around a water bottle in your hand is not the most convenient option in the world. Handles, utility belts and straps are some of the cool new features water bottles come with and if that’s not enough of a reason to buy one, think of the contribution it will make to reducing pollution by plastic water bottles. An activity tracker Yes, this is a pricy investment but can help someone out tremendously with achieving their fitness goals. Activity trackers help plan out routines, offer professional workout tips, monitor your health and can help regulate your diet. It’s a convenient personal trainer and a lot cheaper than a gym membership.

The defender cited a “bad experience” with the previous coaching staff, according to a Cameroon football association (Fecafoot) statement. West Brom full-back Allan Nyom is also among the seven. Fecafoot can ask Fifa to suspend the players at club level for the duration of the three-week tournament. Cameroon coach Hugo Broos said: “These players have put personal interest above those of the national team and the federation reserves the right to take action against the players in accordance with Fifa regulations.” Centre-back Matip, 25, joined Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer having previously been at Bundesliga club Schalke. He has made 14 appearances for the Reds this season. Nyom, who told Broos he wanted to stay at West Brom to keep his place in the team, joined the Baggies from Watford in the last transfer window. 28-year-old has also made 14 appearances for the club so far. The other five Cameroon players are Andre Onana (Ajax Amsterdam), Guy N’dy Assembe (Nancy), Maxime Poundje (Girondins Bordeaux), Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (Olympique Marseille) and Ibrahim Amadou (Lille). All seven had earlier this month been named in a preliminary list of 35 for the tournament - the final 23-man squad will be named next week. Cameroon are drawn in Group A with the hosts Gabon, Burkina Faso and Guinea Bissau.

City Stars pulled level almost instantly after the restart through substitute Fahim Mahima to leave both sides level on two points following earlier draws in their opening fixtures. Sofapaka had earlier on Sunday played to another one all draw

Jonjo Shelvey handed fivegame racial abuse ban Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been banned for five games after he was found guilty of using racially abusive language by an independent panel. He has also been fined £100,000 and ordered to attend a Football Association education course. Shelvey, 24, had a personal hearing to challenge the charge after an incident with Wolves’ Moroccan midfielder Romain Saiss in 17 September’s 2-0 defeat. The player has seven days to appeal. Newcastle said in a statement they will wait to see the FA’s written reasons “before making any further comment on the matter”. The FA’s sanctions will be set aside pending consideration for an appeal. Newcastle were losing to Wolves in their Championship match at St James’ Park, when in the 87th minute an incident occurred between Shelvey and Saiss. If Boxing Day’s visit of Sheffield Wednesday becomes the first game of the suspension, the England international will miss four league games and the FA Cup third-round tie at Birmingham. Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez would next be able to name him in the squad for the Championship game against Rotherham on 21 January.

Dortmund blow chance to make ground in the Bundesliga title race
B
orussia Dortmund missed a bagful of chances to draw 1-1 at home with Augsburg on Tuesday, as they squandered the opportunity to make up ground in the Bundesliga title race heading into the winter break. South Korean Ji Dong-won beat keeper Roman Weidenfeller at the second attempt in the 33rd minute to put the visitors ahead. Dortmund, who had hit the post through Mario Goetze in the ninth minute, dominated late in the first half but could not make their pressure count until Ousmane Dembele levelled two minutes after the restart.
The hosts had numerous chances in a one-sided second half with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Bundesliga’s top scorer, going close half a dozen times. Dortmund are fourth on 27 points, nine points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, who face each other tonight. Eintracht Frankfurt moved up to third on 29 after beating 10-man Mainz 05 3-0 with Branimir Hrgota scoring twice as they secured a fourth victory in their last seven league games. Following the clash Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel bemoaned his side’s inability to find consistency in their play.
“I think that the game today really reflects the season so far,” said Tuchel. “We are punished regularly. That makes things difficult.
