Governors demand an end to State ‘lectures’

he Council of Governors has today demanded an immediate end to orders from the national government asking the county chiefs to account for the funds disbursed to the devolved governments. The Council’s Vice-Chairman Salim Mvurya said it is insincere for

President Uhuru Kenyatta to demand accountability from governors arguing that the two are separate governments. As such, he demanded an end to such ‘lectures’. “This narrative that the national government can pile pressure on counties to be accountable is totally a

misplaced idea and misinterpretation of the constitution,” said Mvurya. “These are two levels of government that work inter-dependently and ought to be respected as such,” added the Kwale Governor. He said the counties have remained accountable for the resources they

Mvurya was speaking today morning during a joint press conference between the Council of Governors and the Ministry of Devolution on preparations of the third devolution conference to be held in Meru from April 19-22. He revealed that the scheduled conference will offer an opportunity for the two levels of government to highlight the achievements and challenges they have always faced. Last month, during the President Kenyatta’s state of Nation address, demanded accountability from county governments saying corruption has become rampant in the devolved units. He said that it is absolutely critical that every Kenyan demands accountability from those who manage public resources. “Our nation has for long time been involved in a protracted war against corruption with mixed results that do not meet Kenyans expectations,” he said. Cabinet Secretary for Devolution Mwangi Kiunjuri said the government has invested in the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to deal with on graft at both levels of government. He appealed to the anti-graft body to do their job to make sure Kenyans are not defrauded of their resources. He further called on the governors to prudently use the resources allocated to them so as to bring services closer to the people. “Our two levels of government I must say have done a great job in the last three years.
