dIAMONd’S NEW NOSE BLING

CLASSIC BAR fOOdS A heaving toasted-bun of meat, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, onion and packet cheese. Bacon can be a welcome surprise, egg not so much. Roast of the day Roast du jour dates back to the 1870s when hotels would put on a free spread of goose, lamb and other farm favourites with sides of fruit, vegetables and salad. Christmas Day, every day! Cut to current day and most pubs still offer Friday roast specials. Kudos to an establishment rotating its roast meat both weekly and on a spit. The mixed grill A hard-earned thirst needs a big cold beer. And a big cold beer needs a mixed grill. Local variations of the mixed grill are many but the usual suspects include steak (minute or T-bone will do), lamb chops, sausages, bacon, fried egg and chips. Health-conscious pubs might throw a grilled tomato in.

Wedges with sweet chilli Potato wedges are the original share plate, around long before there was slow-cooked lamb-shoulder on a wooden board. Rising to popularity in the 1990s, a bowl of wedges is still perfect beer-fodder to dive into with a couple of mates before actual dinner. Steak Chips and salad or veg and mash? When in doubt of a pub’s kitchen credentials, go the steak. Unlike that fish laksa you’re considering, the worst thing that can happen is the steak will be overcooked (pub steak is invariably overcooked anyway). Steak has been a mainstay of pubs since the mid-20th century. Chips Then you have the chips that, by way of ancient magic, manage to be both soggy and undercooked! Other honourable counter classics Nuts and crisps.

2Pac did it as did Chris brown and in Africa, Davido showed that he could achieve the nose piercing but later on lost it. Now, Diamond might have joined the list of male artistes with nose piercings. The celebrated singer posted a photo to flaunt the new piercing DiAMOND which has surprised many.

Aloe Black in Kenya Popular American soul artist Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III AKA Alloe Blacc is in Kenya. The artiste is in the country to headline Blankets and Wine .The star, who is behind I Need a Dollar and The Man hit singles, is scheduled to perform on April 10 at the Ngong Racecourse.

Deputy President William Ruto has today forgiven ‘individuals and groups’ that purportedly fixed him and his then co-accused Joshua arap Sang at the International Criminal Court. Speaking for the first time since The Hague based court declared a mistrial in his case, Ruto told a press conference that his case was founded on falsehood and that it was bound to fail. “I have forgiven the witnesses who gave false testimonies, groups, individuals and civil societies that prepped and coached witnesses to testify against me at the ICC,” Ruto who was flanked by his mother Sarah Cheruiyot and wife Rachel said at his Karen home in Nairobi. “It is my prayer that one day those who connived, conspired and colluded to have this case will engage in soul searching and find their conscious,” he added. According to the DP, his sixyear trial at the ICC was a cruel conspiracy based on malicious lies. “The whole case was a conspiracy conceived, concocted and contrived on the basis on a cruel and malicious lie,” he said. And he took a swipe at the courts prosecutors saying Bensouda and her team should not blame the collapse of the case of political meddling and witness interference. The judges while declaring a mistrial also said that their decision was arrived at given the political meddling in the case which they argued could jeopardise witnesses.

I forgive those who ‘lied to fix me at the ICC’, says Ruto WEEKEND EDITION, APRIL 8-10, 2016

But Ruto believes otherwise. “I am sure in my mind that the case did not collapse because of any other reason but because of our innocence,” he said. The DP wondered how ‘fabrications and fictitious events were concocted to become central pillars to a massive and expensive international criminal case. “How did an obvious lie take six long years to be unearthed? What impelled organisations and individuals to conspire on search a vast scale to visit heartache and anguish on so many innocent people? He posed. While opting to forgive, the DP also prayed that no Kenyan finds himself in such a situation again. “No other Kenyan or human being will ever fall victim to the sought of the ordeal we’ve endured,” he said. With the heavy load of guilt now taken off his shoulders, Ruto took the opportunity to thank his family, lawyers, friends and Kenyans in general for their steadfast prayers and support, both emotionally and morally. “I thank two special ladies in my life. My wife Rachel for her prayers. My mother for the many hours she has stood by me. I thank my supporters and the people of Kenya for believing in our innocence against all odds, insinuations and provocations. I appreciate the millions of Kenyans who fasted and prayed for us throughout this ordeal,” he said before turning to his legal team.

Deputy President William Ruto smiles as his mother Sarah Cheruiyot revels in joy during a press conference at his home in Nairobi today. Mr Ruto said he has forgiven those who fixed him at the ICC.

“I want to pay tribute to my lawyers for their credible efforts, working tirelessly over long hours to systematically uncover the lies and falsehood packaged as a case before the ICC,” he said of the team lead by counsel Karim Khan, David Hooper, Alexandra Shymalla, ESA Faal and the entire legal team. He said the government will now embark on addressing the events of the 2007/08 which he described as the cruellest chapter in our history as independent Kenya. Ruto revealed that the unfortunate

and senseless violence that led to the loss of lives and destruction of property is something Kenyans must learn never to repeat. He said together with President Uhuru Kenyatta, they will soon bring to a closure the events of the postelection skirmishes by addressing all the outstanding issues. “In the darkest hours of my ordeal, and at now at my moment of vindication, I have not forgotten the victims of the post-election violence, who suffered unimaginable trauma,” he said.

“People from all communities, all regions and all religions through Kenya suffered. Every Kenyan who was touched by the tragedy matters. Their suffering demands that we must collectively continue on our chosen path of reconciallition and we must work to achieve harmony as a nation,” he added. He promised that the government would proceed to various phases of settlement efforts and they will not tire until the resettlement is hillary_x254 concluded.

After acquittal, Sang now eyes political seat

Former Kass FM Presenter Joshua arap Sang on Thursday announced that he was consulting to decide on an elective seat in his home county in Trans Nzoia. Speaking two days after the International Criminal Court (ICC) judges vacated his charges, he announced his return to his media career but this time in both television and radio. “Now that the case is over, I am keen to relaunch my media career, with an investment in TV broadcasting, and later, radio. I am also considering, praying and consulting on the possibility of running for public office following requests of many people,” he told a press conference in Nairobi. The media he will join – a Christian television and radio – will be a platform to preach the word of God and also promote good morals in the society especial to ‘people who lied to fix him’. Sang said the ICC case had traumatized him and his family. “This case turned my life upside down. I had to leave my job at Kass FM in 2012 because of the logistics of this case,” he explained. “After I was named a suspect in December 2010, my kids were taunted by other children that their dad would be executed abroad. I had to change schools for them.” He alleged that a group of people in Kenya sat down and decided to fix him at the ICC in what he termed as a result of a political contest that led to the birth of the ICC cases. Sang however said he had forgiven all of them but also urged those who had not apologised to approach him and he would forgive them. He particularly singled out Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who last year claimed that he was among the politicians who fixed Sang and Deputy President William Ruto over political reasons.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is insistent that the African Union must pull out of the International Criminal Court despite its decision to vacate the crimes against humanity charges that were facing his Deputy President William Ruto. President Kenyatta said that while the decision to vacate the charges was commendable, the court had by its own admission weaknesses, and unless it was reformed, the resolve to exit remained unchanged. “It just goes to vindicate the position that we have always held that these charges against us were trumped up charges and we were never supposed to be before that court and seven and a half years later down the road the position that we have always maintained has now been accepted by the court itself,” he told France24 in an interview. He also denied that his government was guilty of frustrating the ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda’s office in her pursuit of evidence against Ruto and said her witnesses had simply recanted their testimony not because they were intimidated but because their initial statements were false. “They lied; plain and simple!” It’s for this reason, he said, that he believed

Waqo defends EACC over laxity claims, blamse DPP Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chief executive Halakhe Waqo (pictured) has defended his officers against accusations of laxity in investigating corruption scandals. The commission has been blamed for its apparent lack of sting with many Kenyans expressing frustrations that they are not doing enough to fight graft in the country. But Mr Waqo has differed with those opinions and defended his team saying they do not have prosecutorial powers and that the perceived laxity emanates from failures by the DPP and the judiciary to convict suspects. While addressing members of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya in a governance forum, Waqo said investigations into economic crimes must be conducted within the stipulated procedures. “Ours is to investigate corrupt deals and then submit the suspects to the office of the DPP to prosecute. We must follow the stipulate law and procedure,” said Waqo. He insisted that the commission was committed to recovering money and

property hidden in offshore accounts. “We are making great strides in recovering some of the money hidden outside the country,” he said. Only last week, he announced the recovery of Sh525 million that had been stolen and stashed in offshore accounts. He challenged professionals and civil society groups to be more proactive in the fight against graft in the country. In the recent past, the commission appealed to the senate for prosecutorial

powers to sufficiently fight corruption in the country. “We need prosecutorial powers to allow us carry out our mandate,” EACC chairman Philip Kinisu appealed to the Senate. In his request Kinisu observed that the commission is under pressure from the public to jail corrupt individuals yet there powers currently does not allow them to prosecute the cases. “Whenever we go people ask us to jail those involved in corruption but our job is just to investigate and issue recommendation,” added kinisu. Mr Ethuro challenged the commission to match its words with action as far as fighting corruption is concerned. “The fight against corruption is a commitment. Words must be matched with action,” he told the EACC bosses. “You have your job cut out and must make sure that resources channeled to the counties are well utilized,” Ethuro said in reference to cases of graft reported from the devolved units of government.

Republicans shift election focus to Colorado and Michigan in big weekend With a contested Republican convention looming, the fierce fight for delegates shifts to the key states of Colorado and Michigan this weekend, just as Donald Trump is scrambling to match the formidable delegate wrangling operation of Ted Cruz. While Trump holds a wide lead over Cruz in the delegate count, the prospects for either candidate to win the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination is looking increasingly slim after Cruz’s win in Wisconsin. And the Texas senator is dominating the complex, behind-the-scenes race for delegates at state conventions like the recent one in North Dakota. Colorado’s state convention appears to be following that pattern. Cruz is scheduled to appear Saturday and John Kasich’s campaign is sending former New Hampshire senator John E. Sununu as his surrogate, but Trump has decided to remain in New York and does not have a representative scheduled to speak on his behalf at the convention. “I don’t know if Donald Trump has an operation here,” said Congressman Ken Buck, the chair of Cruz’s statewide effort here. “If they do, I haven’t seen it.” The state’s delegates could be an especially valuable prize at the convention this year if the nomination is contested, because many of the delegates may not be bound to any one candidate. When they signed up to run as delegates in Colorado, they had a choice to pledge their allegiance to a candidate on the form they filled out, but they also could run as an unpledged delegate -- essentially making them free agents at the convention. Colorado delegates who pledge to support a candidate must vote for that candidate on the 1st ballot at the convention. After that -- on a second or third ballot and beyond -- they would be free to vote for any candidate.

WEEKEND EDITION APRIL 8-10, 2016

The delegate race in Colorado morphed into a complex, multi-layered endeavor for the GOP campaigns when the state decided not to hold a presidential caucus or primary because of the cost. Instead of holding a statewide contest where voters could weigh in on the presidential contenders, the state party members are the kingmakers here. This week, they are in the process of choosing their final slate of convention delegates through a byzantine system of tiered elections that began in February at the precinct and county level. The final list of 37 delegates will be tallied on Saturday when party members gather in Colorado Springs for their state convention. Each of Colorado’s seven congressional districts gets to select three delegates, and that voting is taking place this week at a series of gatherings. Last weekend, Cruz netted six delegates at the first two congressional district conventions. On Thursday night in Arvada -- just outside of Denver -- another three delegates were being selected. The remaining delegate elections will take place Friday at the congressional district gatherings in Colorado Springs. The party will choose 13 statewide delegates at a Colorado Springs arena on Saturday where SOME 600 candidates will get 10 seconds to make their pitches. Cruz is heavily favored to net the most pledged delegates in Colorado, according to political operatives here. Cruz’s team has been recruiting delegate candidates and building their preferred delegate slates since late last year -- seeking out wellknown local political figures who would have enough name recognition to win, and courting delegate candidates who have attended previous Republican National Conventions and would be familiar with the floor rules.

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu has asked County Governments to set up focal training centres for their health workers to enhance health standards and quality. Speaking during the launch and dissemination of training documents for clinical officers Mailu said that continuous quality improvement in the sector requires a dynamic, innovative and responsive leadership which he noted could be achieved through training. The CS said that the health sector has been devolved to counties and thus new ways to deliver training to health workers should be spearheaded by county governments. “It is imperative that we upgrade the skills of current health workers to meet evolving disease burden,” Dr. Mailu said. The CS argued that a significant shift on how health training at pre-service and in-service levels is managed,

monitored and regulated was necessary in ensuring proper health care. Mailu said that the review courses will harmonise the training of clinical officers in the country to enable them offer quality services to Kenyans. “These officers will work at grassroots levels to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality through programmes such as Beyond Zero Campaign”, said Mailu. He pointed out that the introduction of higher national diploma in reproductive health for clinical officers is a milestone towards the provision of comprehensive reproductive health services especially at primary health care levels. The documents unveiled included Bachelor of Science, Clinical Medicine and Community Health, Diploma in clinical medicine and higher national Diploma in reproductive health. @wilson_x254

Pope to make key marriage pronouncement Pope Francis is to make public the conclusions of his two Synods on the family in a document eagerly awaited by 1.3 billion Roman Catholics around the globe. It will detail the pope’s views about family life, marriage, contraception and bringing up children. Many hope it will open the way for the church to offer communion to the divorced and civilly remarried, something conservatives have resisted. The document is the culmination of three years’ work by the Pope. Correspondents says that what is known as an Apostolic Exhortation is a wide-ranging document of more than 200 pages entitled The Joy of Love. The Pope sent a questionnaire to families across the world asking them about their hopes and their fears. Then he brought bishops and cardinals together for two Synods in Rome, at which he encouraged them to debate and even to disagree over issues that divide the church in many countries. Those range from offering communion for the divorced and remarried, contraception and the treatment of Catholics who are gay. According to correspondens, the lengthy document will show exactly where Pope Francis stands - with some already describing it as a Papal bombshell - as he steps into the minefield of Catholic teaching on the family. While conservatives do not want him to change doctrine, liberals hope he will tell the church to show a more merciful attitude to those whose families do not conform to the current Catholic ideal. Some in the church have called for measures which allow a priest or a bishop to decide privately, on a case-by-case basis, if a Catholic who has divorced and remarried can be fully readmitted and receive communion.

While progressives such as the influential Cardinal Walter Kasper of Germany support this policy, conservatives maintain it would devalue the principle established by Jesus of marriage being indissoluble.

At the conclusion of the Synod last year, Francis castigated church leaders who he accused of burying their heads in the sand over the issue, arguing that their adherence to rigid doctrine was over-riding their concern for the suffering

of families. The papal document is also expected to call for better marriage preparation while repeating the Synod’s view that homosexual unions cannot be on a par with heterosexual marriage.

Kenya signs Sh6.9 billion wind energy deal with French agency Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the French Development Agency (AFD) underpinning funding of up to Sh6.9 billion by the French Government for the development of an 80 megawatt (MW) wind project in Meru. The Project is embedded in KenGen’s expansion strategy to meet Kenya’s rising demand and bring down the cost of electricity by focusing on clean and renewable energy sources. KenGen has stated that this is a milestone for the Kenyan economy as well as for the AFD, which has an African reputation of implementing projects quickly and at lower costs. The MoU was signed this week in Paris, France, by KenGen’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Albert Mugo together with the AFD Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Jacques Moineville, witnessed by Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his French counterpart François Hollande in France. A loan agreement is expected to be signed by August this year. The funds from the AFD will be used for the construction of the first phase of the wind farm in Meru County, expected to feed 80MW into the national grid. During the signing of the MoU on the project, Eng. Mugo, said that the project will contribute to economic development and mitigate climate change.

“The project will contribute to a sustainable national energy matrix by producing environmentally sound electrical energy and avoid the generation of carbon emissions at reasonable economic costs,” said Eng. Mugo. The design of the Project is based on the Feasibility Study dated July 2012 that consultancy company Grontmij has prepared for KenGen and financed with a grant provided by AFD to the Government of Kenya.

The design also takes into account inputs from discussions that took place with KenGen, the National Environmental Authority (NEMA), Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), Kenya Power, County Government of Meru and local community representatives during the project appraisal mission. According to the pact, the project includes all infrastructure on site such as roads, collector network, service area, control room; step-up substation

Country’s banking sector needs to be closely monitored: IMF report

Kenya’s banking sector needs to be closely monitored by both the government and industry regulators to avoid losses and financial discrepancies, states a new report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to the study, dubbed the 2016 IMF Country Report, an episode of liquidity stress affected some small banks towards the end of 2015. This, combined withthe placing of several lenders under receivership by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), has caused panic among stakeholders within the sector. “Smaller-size banks suffered loss of wholesale deposits following a “flight-to quality” reaction to the news of the second bank’s placement under receivership. This shift was compounded by an increasing segmentation of the interbank market, intensifying liquidity stress in these

The funds will also be used on an overhead transmission line (OHTL) of approximately 20 Km designed and constructed with a provision to be upgraded to 220 kV for future wind project stages, which will connect the step-up substation to the existing I32kV bay in Isiolo substation.

banks,” states the report. The CBK acted swiftly by providing the needed liquidity to the affected banks helping stabilize their liquidity positions. However, the IMF’s report indicates that staff and the authorities concurred that risks to the banking system warrant increased monitoring. Risks requiring particular attention in the view of the staff and the CBK are credit and liquidity risks, as well as risks associated with potential shocks to interest and exchange rates in light of heightened instability in global markets. The report comes ahead of a move by the CBK to place regional lender, Chase Bank under receivership. According to CBK boss Patrick Njoroge, all 62 of Chase’s branches will remain closed until new management was put in place. Speaking earlier this week, Njoroge stated that Kenya’s Banking sector was stable, despite several banks

going into receivership. The CBK has already announced plans to strengthen banking supervision and regulation to address emerging risks. The CBK intends to assess banking system vulnerabilities by completing the first round of improved banks’ stress tests. Based on this assessment, the authorities plan to take necessary actions, including requirements to raise banks’ capital when appropriate, and maintain adequate provisions relative to Non-Performing Loans (NPLs). In an earlier announcement, the CBK stated that it also aims to continue efforts to strengthen the banking sector’s regulatory framework with a focus on financial stability. |The authorities are also making progress on their commitment to improve the timeliness and quality of fiscal reporting,” said the IMF report. Danish company announces plans to set up shop in Kenya

Danish food ingredient maker Chr Hansen has announced plans to set up shop in Kenya as the company moves to gain a foothold in more African markets, the firm’s Chief Financial Officer Soren Westh Lonning has said. Lonning, who was speaking after the company reported better than expected second-quarter results on Thursday, said that Chr. Hansen is looking for new markets in Africa and the Middle East for its Food Culture and Enzymes division, which makes ingredients for the dairy, meat and wine industries and accounts for about 60 per cent of revenue. The company posted second-quarter operating profit of 63.9 million euros (Sh7.3 billion) before special items, against 52.5 million euros (Sh6 billion) in the same period last year Reuters reports. The firm’s revenue was up nearly 10 per cent at a slightly better than expected 228.9 million euros. The CFO mentioned Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt as potential target countries, but emphasised that currently, there are no concrete plans. “We’re very successful in China at the moment, in all our business areas,” Lonning said. In January, Chr. Hansen announced plans to acquire US-based Nutritional Physiology Company (NPC) and expand its business in the livestock industry.

KQ will recover despite Sh25 billion loss, says Mbuvi Kenya Airways (KQ), the country’s flagship carrier is on the road to recovery despite a Sh25 billion loss that the firm posted in the last financial year ending March 31, 2015, the flier has said. Kenya Airways Chief Executive Ngunze Mbuvi expects the airline to save up to Sh9 billion from the sale and sub-leasing of its fleet. Speaking when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Transport, he said the carrier will register improved performance when it presents its half year results. “If you recall at the half year when we released our results we had reduced our operating costs significantly from 2014/15 to 2015/16 however because of the exchange rate movement we have a big impact on the exchange rate and also a big impact of interest because we are borrowing more,’’ said Ngunze. “But the underlying part of the business which is the operating part of the business improved significantly this year and I have every expectation that when

we announce our results later it will be in that context,” he added. He confirmed that the selling of the airline’s two aircraft has saved the firm Sh200 million in fleet costs and that the flier is seeking to enter into an agreement to sub-lease five other aircraft, which will reduce lease costs by Sh500 million. Ngunze said the selling off its prime landing slot at the airport for an estimated Sh7.5 billion could significantly affect the airline’s attractiveness to passengers on the UK route and slow down the speed of recovery. KQ made a loss of more than Sh25 billion in the last financial year ending March 31, 2015 forcing it to put in place resizing measures such as sale of its two Boeing 777-200 fleet and the planned retrenchment and redeployment of the 600 employees. Ngunze noted that the restructuring process will start in May and accounts for 10 per cent of their overall turnaround plan. enock_x254

Savannah Cement upgrades plant to boost production WEEKEND EDITION, APRIL 8-10, 2016

Local manufacturing company, Savannah Cement has completed a major plant upgrade geared towards boosting the firm’s production and customer service efficiency. The firm, which operates a new generation cement grinding mill based on the eco-friendly, Roller press technology, has undertaken an extensive improvement of its core manufacturing units. Speaking when he confirmed the successful project completion, following a week-long production shutdown, Savannah Cement, Managing Director, Ronald Ndegwa said the firm, is now well placed to better meet customer demands. The upgrade, he added, had also served as a key skills transfer programme for local technical team members, at the firm, who have received intensive training from the machinery specialists, earlier flown in, from China and Germany. With the completion of the upgrade, Savannah Cement, which has more than 1 million metric tonnes annual production capacity, also becomes the first cement producer to successfully undertake an extensive improvement of its Roller Press unit in Sub-Sahara Africa. Such upgrade requires specialist technical expertise, as the plant operates on precision engineering principles. “At Savannah Cement, we are excited at the timely and successful completion of the scheduled upgrade which has given our production plant enhanced reliability,” Ndegwa said.

British Airways ups capacity for London Nairobi flights British Airways has increased its carrying capacity for flights between London and Nairobi by introducing a Boeing 747-400, adding 784 seats a week on the route. The plane will operate from July 1 until October 29, after which the service will revert to a Boeing 777 ER. British Airways Commercial Manager for South and East Africa Edward Frost said that the additional capacity is welcome news for leisure and business travellers alike. He added that the schedule also allows for convenient transfer times to onward flights particularly to North America. For Kenyan customers, the airline is offering a two-week offer with fares to London starting from $1,115 (Sh113,000), a discount of 20 per cent.

Financial services provider, Barclays Africa has completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in First Assurance. The deal, valued at Sh2.9 billion, opens the door for Barclays Kenya to gain a foothold in the insurance market. Barclays Bank Kenya Managing Director Jeremy Awori congratulated the lender’s parent company, Barclays Africa Group Limited for successfully incorporating First Assurance to the Barclays Africa family. He was speaking during the launch of the insurance firm as part of Barclays Group. Barclays Africa announced in June last year that it will buy a 63.3 per cent stake in the insurance firm and which would see First Assurance shareholders receive Sh2.2 billion. The bank also announced an additional Sh700 million capital injection to boost the business.

KCB seeks approval for Sh10bn cash call KCB Group Limited, Kenya’s biggest lender by assets, has announced that it is seeking shareholder approval to raise up to Sh10 billion through a rights issue. It said in March it would also issue a yet to be determined amount of debt to boost capital. The bank said shareholders will vote on the planned rights issue on April 29 at the bank’s annual general meeting. The lender posted a pre-tax profit of Sh26.5 billion in 2015, up 12 per cent from the previous year. Last month, KCB Group announced plans to create about 2.5 million jobs within the next five years through a Sh50 billion enterprise development programme dubbed “2JIAJIRI”. The move seeks to ease the country’s unemployment crisis and help entrepreneurs in the informal sector.

Sameer Africa posts Sh5.7 million profit Kenyan tyre maker Sameer has said it moved back into profit in 2015 despite tumuulous market conditions. The manufacturing company posted a pre-tax profit of Sh5.7 million, up from a loss of Sh69.5 million in 2014. Sameer said lower operating costs made

up for slowing revenue, hurt by civil unrest and foreign currency shortages in some export markets. According to Reuters, its total revenue fell to Sh3.36 billion from Sh3.77 billion while operating costs fell to Sh916.1 million from Sh1.01 billion in 2014.

It also said sales were hurt by subsidised tyres from countries in the East, but did not give specific origins. “Sales into our markets were also adversely affected by civil unrest in some and acute hard currency shortages in others,” the firm said in a statement.

Burundi, one of Sameer’s markets in East Africa is in the midst of a political crisis arising from President Pierre Nkurunziza seeking a third term in office that his opponents say is unconstitutional. South Sudan is also experiencing a

shortage of hard currency. The country descended into conflict in December 2013. Sameer Africa was among a list of firms whose profits for 2015 dropped by more than a quarter. According to a survey dubbed ‘TechSci Research report, Kenya Tyre Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2020’, the country’s tyre market is set t to witness a moderate growth during the 2015 to 2020 period. Backed by an increase in domestic automotive demand and emergence of Kenya as a major East African commercial hub, the country’s tyre market is projected to witness an increase in volume sales over the next five years. Kenya tyre market is a replacement driven tyre market as there is no automobile manufacturing facility in the country. The report indicates that Kenya offers huge potential for new vehicle sales over the next five years, thereby promising a positive outlook for the country’s tyre industry as well. This is helped by the fact that Kenya has a vehicle motorization rate of around 28 vehicles per 1,000 people. Sameer Africa is the only domestic tyre manufacturing company in Kenya, while other global tyre companies such as Apollo, Pirelli and Dunlop operate in Kenya tyre market through the import route.

Construction boom prompts GM to double truck output A construction boom in Kenya has fuelled a rise in commercial truck sales for market leader General Motors (GM), which is investing $7.9 million (Sh800 million) in 2016 to upgrade its assembly plant in Nairobi, a senior executive has said. GM East Africa Managing Director Rita Kavashe said 20,000 new vehicles were sold in Kenya last year, the highest on record, and 98 percent of those were trucks and buses. This reflected both the strong commercial sector as infrastructure projects take off, as well as the prevalence of second-hand passenger cars which dominate the clogged roads of the capital Nairobi. “Three years ago we were producing about 10 vehicles and following upgrades and improvements, creating efficiencies has moved our production to about 22 vehicles a day,” she told Reuters in an interview. “We continue to improve our processes, so we should be able to comfortably get 25 vehicles a day by mid of next year.” The Nairobi plant, one of three GM manufacturing hubs in Africa, is geared towards the commercial bus and truck market and typically builds trucks weighing between 3.5 tonnes and 15 tonnes.

GM’s total global vehicle sales were 9.8 million in 2015, a 0.2 percent jump in a third consecutive year of record sales. However, 80 percent of the vehicles sold in Kenya which are about 80,000 cars a year are low-priced used vehicles. “We are advocating for the reduction of age limits for second-hand vehicles to get away from complete dumping,” she said. At the moment only Kenya has a law limiting the age of cars, up to eight years, that can be imported although none of its East African neighbours have a similar law. An excise duty of around Sh 152,000 imposed by the government from the beginning of the year has helped curb some of the second-hand imports, but has also hurt the new vehicle market and was regarded as a “step backwards” as Kenya sought to become the main automotive hub for East Africa, she said. Kavashe said the outlook for the market for this year has been tempered somewhat as higher interest rates hit consumers and government reprioritises project spending. “We are seeing a decline in the auto sector, with January to March already we’ve seen a decline of 14 percent compared to last year,” she said.

New Brachytherapy system signals reprieve for cancer patients Cancer patients in Uganda are set to benefit from the installation of a new advanced High Rate Brachytherapy system from the Uganda Cancer Institute. The system, dubbed the Flexitron Cobalt-60 kit from Elekta, will not only improve treatment process but also shorten the treatment time for cancer patients. Brachytherapy (internal radiotherapy), is used to treat different types of cancer ranging from cervical, prostate, bladder, breast and skin cancer accurately. Typically, brachytherapy is associated with low toxicity rates and a favourable side effect profile, improves clinical outcomes by combining a boost with external beam radiation therapy, and can also be effective as a monotherapy modality. Mulago Hospital, the largest hospital in Uganda and the site of Uganda’s only Cancer Institute and radiotherapy Department, had been using an ageing Low Dose Rate caesium afterloader model, which takes too long and meant for one patient yet cancer rates on the rise. Elekta’s Flexitron brachytherapy system with Oncentra®Brachy allows

for faster, more accurate treatment delivery and dose distribution. “After the staff being trained at the beginning of March, the treatments of the first two patients with Flexitron were completed in only five hours, a significant improvement in treatment time,” says Elekta application specialist Jeroen Singelenberg. Adding: “In addition, the new system enables far more accurate dose distribution, with minimal impact on healthy tissue.” Dr. KavumaAwusi, a medical physicist at the Uganda cancer institute comments: “By the second week after

initiation, we were treating an average of5cervical patients per day. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer, accounting for 40 per cent of the nearly 2000 new cancer patients seen in our department per year. The new unit will reduce their brachytherapy waiting time and improve both treatment response and survival rates.” However, Uganda Cancer Institute is facing a problem of lack of imaging capability risking delivery of correct treatment though they are working to counter the challenge. enock_x254

Kenya given new anti-doping deadline WEEKEND EDITION, APRIL 8-10, 2016

Kenya could be banned from the Olympics if it does not pass new antidoping rules by a new World AntiDoping Agency deadline of 2 May. Kenya has already missed two deadlines to show it is tackling cheating in sport. The first deadline was on February 11, 2016 which was then extended to April 5, 2016. But after the government failed to enact new anti-doping rule, The World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) has given Kenya a new deadline of May 2, 2016 to put its house in order. If Kenya does not legislate to create a new national anti-doping agency, it will be declared non-compliant and move a step closer to missing the Rio Games. Meanwhile Ethiopia has been given until November to perform mass doping tests. The two nations are among the most successful in track and field, and placed first and fifth respectively in the medal table at the 2015 World Athletics Championships. Since 2011, more than 40 Kenyan athletes have failed drugs tests and the country has been placed on a ‘watchlist’ of nations at risk of breaching the

World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) code and told to take legal steps to toughen its anti-doping procedures. But while lawmakers have held a preliminary reading of a bill criminalising sports doping, two further hearings and presidential assent are still required and the country’s parliament is now in recess. However, Athletics Kenya’s acting president Jackson Tuwei has said he believes Wada is “satisfied with the progress” of the country’s anti-doping efforts. Ethiopia is not in danger of missing the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August, but could face a ban at a later date if it does not comply with Wada’s request to test up to 200 athletes. Results of the drug tests - to which the government has pledged $300,000 (£212,900) - must be provided to Wada and world athletics’ governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). “We are told that we could be banned from the IAAF if we don’t comply with the request,” team doctor Ayalew Tilahun told a news conference.

Harambee stars drops 12 places in new Fifa ranking

Harambee Stars players pose for a photo before their Africa Cup of Nations 2017 qualifier against Guinea Bissau at the Nyayo national stadium in nairobi last month. The national football team Harambee Stars has dropped 12 places in the latest FIFA rankings released Thursday. Stars are now placed 115th after losing back-to-back 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier to Guinea Bissau. As a result, Guinea Bissau climbed up a massive 45 places to 102nd. Kenya had been on the ascendancy, closing in on double digit ranking, but the disastrous performance against Bissau, who were placed 45 places below Stars, benefited the West African side. Kenya’s other opponents in the qualifiers Zambia and Congo retained their positions at 78th and 59th respectively. Cape Verde, who knocked Kenya out of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers have been dethroned as the best placed African nation, going down 16 places to 47th. Algeria moved top of the African table, rising four places up to 33rd globally. In Africa, Egypt are the highest movers having ascended nine places to 44th to be ranked fifth in the continent while Ivory Coast, Ghana and Senegal are second, third and fourth in that order. In the CECAFA region, Uganda remains the best placed country despite slumping five places. The Cranes lost away to Burkina Faso in their AFCON qualifier, then picked a point at home and are now ranked 72nd globally. Rwanda have dropped two places to 87th, Ethiopia down three places to 123rd while Burundi are the most improved going seven places up to 122nd. Argentina reclaimed top spot from Belgium while Copa America champions Chile soared to an all-time high of third place. Three straight wins in 2018 World Cup qualifiers helped Argentina return to the summit, five months after they were supplanted by Belgium. Chile moved up two places from fifth, with Colombia climbing from eighth to fourth and Uruguay moving back into the top 10 as a reward for their strong start to South American qualifying. Two-time defending European champions Spain drop three places to sixth, with world champions Germany, Brazil, Portugal and England also sliding down one spot. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Klopp’s tactics pay at Dortmund as holders From Page 16 He was limited to one real chance, an effort from close range that was blocked by Lovren, while Sakho threw his body in the way of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to deny what was an almost certain goal. Despite the away goal, the tie is far from over. Dortmund have scored in each of their previous six away games, including two goals at Tottenham in the previous round of the competition. Improving their defending at setpieces will also be key for Liverpool. Hummels was left unmarked to head in the simplest of goals from a corner, meaning the past three goals Liverpool have conceded in the Europa League have been from set-pieces. “In a quarter-final it can be that you don’t deserve to win and that was the case. This was exactly what we expected from Liverpool - but we expected ourselves to be better, freer in our passing and with a better rhythm,” Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel said after the match. “We are able to score away goals as well. We are not frightened and we are not too disappointed. Tonight was not our top performance and to win you need a top performance. We have been to a lot of places and scored and won. They have progressed from 11 of their past 12 European ties in which they have drawn the first leg away from home. “Dortmund is a pretty good side and everyone could see that, but we had our moments and we could have won the game,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp who was given a heroic welcome said after the match. “I’m pretty sure a lot of people thought

Around 20 television crews and some 100 journalists were in attendance for his pre-match news conference, while one German TV had been planning a ‘Klopp Cam’, which would have focused on the Liverpool boss for the full 90 minutes - although that idea was ultimately shelved. When Klopp emerged before the match, his name was chanted by the home fans but the Liverpool boss was evidently keen to make sure he was not the centre of attention.

After acknowledging the home fans with a clap, he switched focus firmly to his own players warming up and there was no doubt about where his allegiances lie when he thumped his chest and roared in delight after Origi’s goal. “It was nice. A lot of people spoke about it but when I came onto the pitch it was respectful applause and that’s nice. That’s how it should be,” he said of the reception he got. The two sides meet at Anfield in the second leg on Thursday next week.

Sevilla rallies to beat Athletic Bilbao Unai Emery’s side fight back from a goal down to earn their first away win

Holders Sevilla claimed their first away win of the season with a first-leg victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League quarter-finals. Vicente Iborra struck seven minutes from time to earn a 2-1 win that keeps Unai Emery’s side on course to lift the trophy for the third straight year. Timothee Kolodziejczak had levelled for Sevilla after Aritz Aduriz’s opener. The comeback win serves a huge psychological aspect, as Unai Emery’s men had yet to triumph away from home in the competition this season. Speaking after the match, the Spaniard was measured in his praise of his team’s performance. “I’m happy with the first part of this tie where the team has competed and aimed to win, which is what we had in mind,” said Emery. “It was a very even, tough game. We leave with satisfaction, knowing that we just have 90 minutes more. We

are cautious, but we have moderate satisfaction,” he added. There were also 2-1 wins for Shakhtar Donetsk and Villarreal against Braga

and Sparta Prague respectively. Yaroslav Rakitskiy put Ukrainian side Shakhtar in front in Portugal and Facundo Ferreyra pounced to make it

2-0 to the visitors before a late effort by home substitute Wilson Eduardo gave Braga hope. Cedric Bakambu was the hero for

Spanish side Villarreal with both their goals, either side of Jakub Brabec’s equaliser for Sparta.

HOLDERS SEVILLA RALLY FROM BEHIND TO BEAT ATHLETIC BILBAO AND TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR EUROPA LEAGUE TIE

ivock Origi gave Liverpool a potentially crucial away goal in their Europa League quarter-final tie with Borussia Dortmund as the first leg in Germany ended in a draw. The Belgium striker struck on Reds boss Jurgen Klopp’s return to his former club with a low finish across goal. Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller then denied Origi one-on-one. Mats Hummels headed in an equaliser and the hosts pressed in search of a winner, but Liverpool kept them at bay. In the end it was a fair result as Dortmund, favourites to win the Europa League, dominated possession but Klopp’s tactics ensured Liverpool frustrated their opponents, restricting them to few real chances. A stirring rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone - a song both teams have adopted as their football anthem - before kick-off set the tone for the game, with a special atmosphere playing its part in an encounter that was tense and, at times, thrilling. Some eyebrows were raised before kick-off

when Klopp decided to start Origi instead of England international Daniel Sturridge. Origi had not scored since 14 February, while Sturridge appeared to be finding his form after returning from injury with three goals in nine games. The 20-year-old was nothing more than a spectator in the opening stages as Liverpool soaked up some early pressure, but Klopp said before the game that he had given him the nod because of his pace and power - and both were on show when the visitors took the lead. He controlled captain Jordan Henderson’s slightly awkward ball superbly before turning towards goal and steering a low strike into the far corner. From then on, Origi held up the ball excellently to relieve some pressure on a defence that unsurprisingly came under some heavy pressure at times. In Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Dortmund possess one of the most lethal finishers in Europe, but Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho stood up to the task of nullifying the 33-goal Gabon striker.
