hairman of the defunct Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) Charles Nyachae has joined calls to have the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)

KNCHR protests move to shut down refugee camps The decision by the government to stop hosting refugees amounts to serious threat to the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has said. The commission in a statement also observes that the move by the government would lead to the breach of the country’s obligations under national, regional and international human rights law. “Refugees and asylum seekers as a group are not a threat to national security, they are vulnerable persons in need of protection having fled persecution and suffering from their respective countries,” reads the statement. KNCHR argues that by unilaterally closing the refugee camps, the government would be in grave breach of the principle of nonrefoulment which protects asylum seekers and refugees from being returned to places where their lives or freedoms could be threatened. “The commission noted with concern that the latest directive adds into a growing trend of government policies that are unlawful and unconstitutional especially in respect to human rights,” further reads the statement. This comes as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warned that the action by the government risk worsening the current global refugee crisis. “In today’s global context of some 60 million people forcibly displaced, it is more important than ever that international asylum obligations prevail and are properly supported,” the agency said. “In light of this, and because of the potentially devastating consequences for hundreds of thousands of people that premature ending of refugee hosting would have, UNHCR is calling on the government of Kenya to reconsider its decision,” it said “The safety of hundreds of thousands of Somalis, South Sudanese and others has (long) hinged on Kenya’s generosity and its

willingness to be a leading beacon in the region for international protection,” UNHCR said in athe statement signed by chairperson Mbogori Kagwiria. Kenya hosts some 550,000 refugees in camps in the north of the country. Dadaab camp in the northeast, the world’s largest, mainly accommodates refugees from neighbouring Somalia. Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibichio, however, insisted that the refugees have to leave due to security reasons and persistent terrorist threat to the country. “Some of the largest terror attacks in the country like the 2013 Westgate atrocity were planned and operationalized from Dadaab. The al shabaab terrorist group has been able to take advantage of the camps’ overcrowded and under-resourced conditions and most importantly the limits to policing United Nations run sites to to operate with an
alarming degree of freedom,” said the PS. Kibichio pointed out that the intelligence and security forces have known for a long time that the refugee camps are dire threat to the people’s security. “Thus is not a decision without pain and controversy. Kenya after all has been a proud contributor to regional peace and security. In the good country index, which measures what each country on earth contributes to the common good of humanity, Kenya is ranked 26th. It is 20th in contributing to international peace and security,” Kibichio said. “We have observed with dismay the environmental damage that the camps have caused to the detriment of host communities. The camps were built for a fraction of their population. There has also been a fall-off in the voluntary international funding for the camps in the country,” added Kibichio. sam_x254
IEBC has failed, disband it, says Charles Nyachae From Page 1
“For different reasons, I don’t necessarily share the reasons Cord has given for saying IEBC commissioners should go home. But for different reasons, and I can give you one such reason, today, if I was chair of IEBC, as a matter of professional integrity, as a matter of good conscience, as a matter of honour, I would resign,” Mr Nyachae said. He went on to explain his view. “I think there are mistakes that IEBC has made that would justify that a natural next step. IEBC in my view handled the referendum saga long before Cord took their signatures in a manner that the process was bound to fail. As CIC before we left office, we had tried to engage IEBC and we advised the poll body that you cannot even begin to think of having a referendum without a referendum law.
And by not doing that, they set the stage for the disaster that we are facing today,” he said. Asked whether he thought the electoral body has failed, Mr Nyachae answered in the affirmative. “I would say IEBC has failed and if I was the chair, I would resign,” he answered. Calls to have the commissioners resign have intensified in recent weeks with church leaders, workers and rights groups joining the Opposition to put pressure for them to vacate office. Parliament’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee which is chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga is already considering a way out of the stalemate. And even if the current IEBC commissioners were to oversee 2017 elections, there would still be a crisis should there be no direct winner and the presidential vote goes to a run off.
The term of the current commissioners end in November 2017 yet an election rerun could extend to December that year. And Mr Nyachae agrees there is potential for such a crisis. “That is another issue which we had also raised. We raised it with IEBC, we raised it with the Chepkonga committee and we even wrote an advisory on it. Clearly, there is a potential of a crisis there. That is a real problem irrespective of whether this IEBC has done well or not,” he said. On the way forward, Mr Nyachae called on Parliament through the Justice and Legal Affairs committee to rise to the occasion and help resolve the stalemate. “Parliament has a responsibility to bring together all stakeholders and agree on an objective approach to appointing new commissioners,” he said. peter_x254
Expelled UoN student Mike Jacobs arrested Expelled University of Nairobi student Mike Jacobs Odhiambo was yesterday arrested by police over the recent burning of the students’ body offices. Police officers pounced on Jacobs who went to the insbtitution yesterday allegedly to lead another protest challenging the expulsion of 33 students. Accompanied by a handful of other expelled students, Jacobs unsuccessfully tried to lead another protests to force the University’s Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi out of office. The administration called the police who swiftly moved in and arrested Jacobs. The police had issued a warrant of arrest against him and others. He was last evening seen being accosted by four police officers at the university’s Nairobi main campus. Jacobs faces the charges of arson and malicious damage of public property during protests held by students last month. The students were protesting the re-election of controversial student leader Babu Owino as chairman of the SONU body. Jacobs is expected to be arraigned before the Kibera Law Courts today to answer to the charges brought before him. He is alleged to have led a large number of students on the streets disputing the results in which he claims the elections were flawed in his opponent’s favour. The fracas that ensued went on for three days and led to the subsequent closure of Kenya’s oldest university for a month. The institution, however, reopened last week. In response to the demonstrations, the university through its vice chancellor announced the expulsion of 33 students with several others suspended. Jacobs was among those expelled. Babu Owino was last week charged over assault charges meted on Jacobs by Owino and his associates at a petrol station. The Kileleshwa incident was caught on tape in a video that went viral. Owino, however, denied the charges and was released on a Sh 100,000 bail. The case will be heard on July 21.
Demolish them in 7 days, owners of condemned buildings ordered Owners of condemned buildings across the country have been given a one week amnesty to demolish them and salvage their property. At a press conference today, Urban and Housing PS Paul Mwangi said the government is keen on demolishing such structures but has opted to allow their owners to take the lead under humane considerations. “We are keen to ensure all unsafe building will be demolished but we must do it in a humane manner. Our laws are preemptive not punitive,” Prof Mwangi said. He said the ministry has also trained more than 120 inspectors to facilitate the move in different parts of the country. “We have trained 120 inspectorate officers to facilitate the audit process to all our counties,” said Mwangi. To ensure the directive is implemented, the ministry in collaboration with other stakeholders has instituted two committees to guide the demolition process. “We have set the committee’s to ensure harmony in the demolition process and ensure due diligence of the law,” added the PS. 226 buildings have been earmarked for demolition in Nairobi following an audit by the National Construction Authority (NCA) and City Hall inspectorate officers. According to the audit report, Huruma, Mathare, Zimmerman, and Githurai estates have the highest number of condemned buildings. The PS has asked the members of the public living in affected houses marked ‘X’ to take the amnesty period to vacate the premises to avoid loss of property. ‘I am urging all residents living in houses marked ‘X’ to vacate as soon as possible,’ Mwangi said. wilson_x254

Phase one of Digi-school roll out to end this week The first phase of the government flagship project of rolling out 12, 000 learning devices for the Digital Literacy Programme will end on Saturday. The pilot project, which has so far been issued to 150 primary schools across the country, has been touted to be a game changer in Kenya’s education sector. Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i (pictured) said the full rollout of the Digital Literacy Programme dubbed Digi-school is a major milestone towards preparing young Kenyans to be competitive globally. Matiang’i said that the pilot will pave the way to the full implementation of the programme come July. “In July this year, we will start the delivery of devices to 11,000 schools as we start the rollout of the programme in earnest. By March next year, we expect to have covered all 23,951 public primary schools” he said. “A total of 1.2 million devices will be delivered to public primary schools across the country by next year,” he added. The Cabinet Secretary said teachers will use laptops as their main tool of instruction while pupils will use tablets. He explained that the laptops can be used for developing content and applications. Dr. Matiang’i was speaking yesterday during the handing over of 104 devices to Musa Gitau primary school in Kiambu County and 115 devices to
Ndurarua Primary School in Dagoretti South Constituency, Nairobi County. The Digi –schools devices have been designed with the pupils in mind, with hardened glass, toughened exterior and

critical components mounted on shock absorbing materials. The devices have specialised items which includes a luminous green tablet for the pupils, sky blue laptop for the teachers, projector and digital content server and wireless router. However, the special schools will receive a sky blue laptop for special needs learners and a Braille embosser. The devices are pre-loaded with content for Standard 1 and 2 in five subjects, approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). Content for other classes will be made in the coming months. KICD is working towards getting learning content available on multiple platforms. During the April 2016 holidays the programme embarked on a robust teachers training. The programme in conjunction with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) trained 300 teachers from the 150 pilot schools. At least 3 teachers in all the 23,000 schools have been trained on ICT. About 66,000 teachers have been trained. On the other hand, to date over 22,237 schools have been connected to the national electricity grid to actualise the laptop programme. The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum said it is in the final stages of connecting the remaining schools.

Two Cord legislators yesterday sought refuge at the University of Nairobi after police lobbed teargas on them as they matched to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission offices at the Anniversary Towers on University Way. Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama and Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo were caught in the melee that ensued between the police and the Cord protesters yesterday. The university was briefly turned into a battle ground with people running helter-skelter as thick clouds of teargas rose up the air. The university’s main library was also not spared as police lobbed teargas to the students who were studying in the library causing near stampede within the facility. Officers from the GSU followed the protestors into the campus and halls of residence in a bid to disperse them. Parts of Uhuru Highway, University Way and Lower State House Roads were closed for about fifteen minutes as police engaged the protestors in running battles. After 30 minutes, the university was clear save for heavily armed GSU officers who were still keeping vigil in case the group of protestors regrouped again. The incident led to the
cancellation of the ongoing end semester examinations that had been scheduled for yesterday afternoon. The University through a statement in its website confirmed the incident and said a later date would be set for the exams. Cord leaders, however, vowed to continue with the protest next week saying no amount of intimidation and use of police force will deter them from exercising their democratic right. Led by Raila Odinga, the opposition leaders maintained that time is up for the Issack Hassan-led commission to leave office because “they cannot preside over the next general elections.” “We must have a credible elections, we are not leaving anything to chance and therefore, Hassan and his team must leave,” Odinga said Odinga questioned the motive of the government in deploying police to disrupt a peaceful demonstration. “Election rigging does not start at the ballot box but is ongoing right now with the purchase of pre-programmed BVR kits from Korea,” Mr Musyoka said. @sam_x254

Heavy rains to continue for the next two weeks The heavy downpour being experienced in Nairobi will continue for the next two weeks, the Meteorological department has said. Meteorological services Director James Kongoti said Nairobi County will receive enhanced rains which will only begin to recede in two weeks. “Heavy rains across the country will continue to bring misery to thousands of Kenyans for next two more weeks,” he said. According to statistics by the department, the heavy downpour has so far claimed the lives of more than 50 people. Kongoti expressed fears that heavy rains that have wreaked havoc and caused misery across the country might double causing more danger. Hundreds of people have been made homeless in the city, while houses in mid-level estates such as South C have been flooded. The warning comes just a week after a six-storey residential building collapsed in city’s Huruma estate killing 51 while 19 people are still missing.
Kongoti warned that the rainfall could also set off mudslides in Murang’a and Nyeri because the soil has already been loosened. “Landslide are likely to occur in Murang’a and Nyeri during the first half of May. People living in such areas should be on the lookout to avoid loss of lives,” he said. At the Coast, Kongoti warned that hundreds of residents could be completely cut off if the Tana River breaks it banks. The weatherman explained that parts of central Rift Valley including Nakuru and Nyahururu, and the Coastal strip are expected to continue receiving rainfall up to June. He said North-western, southern parts of central Rift Valley (Narok, Kajiado, Magadi) and Central regions including Nairobi are likely to experience cessation of the long rains during the third and fourth weeks of May. “The cessation is likely to occur during the second to third week of May in the North-eastern and South-eastern parts of the country, he concluded.

Equity posts Sh7.3 billion profit powered by increased lending Equity Group Holdings has reported a 19 per cent increase in pre-tax profit for the first quarter of 2016 to Sh7.3 billion. The lender, which is the country’s second largest bank by assets, said today that the growth came from a 37 per cent jump in net interest income for the group, driven by its strategy of securing cheaper funds from shareholders and creditors, while increasing lending to customers, said Chief Executive James Mwangi. “Eighty-one per cent of our loans came through mobile Equitel while the branch contributed to 19 per cent of the loans disbursed during Q1 2016,” he explained while announcing the results this morning. “We closed the first quarter with an asset base of Sh430 billion - a 15 per cent growth whilst maintaining portfolio diversification,” he added. “We have seen significant growth in the uptake of Equitel SIM cards with 1.861 million registered sim cards as at end March 2016,” Dr Mwangi said. It has since emerged that over 90 per cent of the bank’s Equitel sim card holders have already linked their cards to mobile banking. According to the Q1 results, Equity Bank now has 10 million customers out of which 2 million are accessing services through equitel. Mobile transactions through Equitel rose from 11 million to 45.6 million - a 315 per cent increase from Q1 2015 to Q1 2016. “We are seeing a robust economy

Privatise State-owned institutions: report
Cytonn Investments Company has called upon the government to privatise State-owned institutions to ensure an efficient turnaround of the country’s troubled financial sector. Speaking in Nairobi yesterday during the release of Cytonn Corporate Governance Index, Shiv Arora head of Private Equity said investors have incurred losses of up to Sh264.3 billion as a result of isolated corporate governance issues and mismanagement of institutions. “Corporate governance in Kenya has been an issue which has led to the loss of investor’s wealth in different companies, with the capital of government-owned institutions shrinking by more than 90 per cent, there is a need for privatization in these organizations, ” said Arora. “For a market with over 60 listed companies to have significant issues with at least eight companies equates to about 13 per cent of listed companies with corporate governance issues, that is a worryingly high statistic that should call into question of regulatory frameworks and their effectiveness,” he added. According to him, the companies include; Chase Bank, CMC, Imperial Bank, Uchumi, Mumias, Kenya Airways, National Bank and Trans Century. The report indicates that Kenya Airways was the biggest government-owned institution that had faced major losses in recent months, of up to Sh179.5 billion, followed by Imperial Bank with Sh36. billion and Mumias with Sh27 billion in the top three categories. Kenya to receive Sh63 billion European Union grant by 2017 The European Union (EU) delegation to Kenya led by Amb. Stefano Antonio Dejak has confirmed that they will provide the government with Sh63 billion in funding before the end of 2017. In his keynote address during the Europe Day celebration held yesterday in Nairobi, Dejak said that out of the Sh63 billion, Sh57.5 billion will be used to boost agriculture. The remaining amount would be used to support Kenya’s democratic governance in realizing the two thirds gender rule as well as enhancing women participation in governance. “Kenyans have provided a clear and appreciated lead in the region by showing how to bring down economic barriers at the recent WTO Ministerial Conference and fight threats to its environment at the Paris Conference on Climate Change and at the recent Giant Summit in Nanyuki,” said Dejak. He commended Kenya for development strides the country has made in boosting its economy and the fight against poaching. The ambassador also expressed pride in the focus that the EU and Kenya’s development initiatives have put on the youth and women, saying that it is only through the empowerment of the two groups that Kenya will have a future generation that can drive its development agenda forward. Speaking at the same event, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich expressed confidence in the opportunities that the Kenya-EU partnership has for realising most of the countries development focus areas. “As a government, we are critically aware that investing in the potential of the youth and women will help us all achieve their great potential and bring
about our desired prosperity and good governance,’’ said CS Rotich. “The Vision 2030 that we commit to making sure that structures and programmes that support the growth and development of the youth and women are revamped, made robust and dynamic to achieve the levels of transformation that we seek”, he added. He said the government and people
of Kenya recognise the great efforts the EU has made in ensuring that our relationship in trade benefits as many Kenyan as possible. The CS praised the impact the EU projects are having in the country and hoped that the relationship will go deeper and have another 40-year celebration in the future. Moving forward, Ambassador Dejak reiterated the EU’s bid to remain
Kenya’s most important development partner by ensuring an increase in trade volumes between Kenya and the EU, expanding its support in road and energy infrastructure development and helping in strengthening Kenya’s electoral processes beyond the 2017 general elections. enock_x254

Poor governance costing firms Sh264 billion Listed firms have lost close to Sh264 billion as a result of poor corporate governance and lack of professional ethics, real estate firm Cytonn has revealed. Among the firms that were greatly affected according to the report are Uchumi Supermarkets, Mumias Sugar, Kenya Airways, National Bank of Kenya and Trans Century. According to the report, the banking sector is the most affected sector with issues including mismanagement, lack of tight board supervision, non-disclosures as well as a lack of transparency. Of the Sh264 billion lost, close to Sh180 billion was lost by Kenya Airways alone, the report indicated. “Corporate governance have been largest in the banking sector with shortfalls leading to closure of three

banks with listed firms losing as much as Sh 264 billion,” said Elizabeth Nkukuu, Chief Investment Officer at Cytonn. “Other than disclosures, we have witnessed several cases of restatement of earnings by large financial services firms, bringing into question the quality of earnings and reliability of information,” she added. She thanked the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) for its efforts including tightening of banks supervision, a move that would win back investors’ confidence especially banking, and the most affected sector. “CBK has already come out in to the market to state that level of supervision and the governor will lead the efforts to curb the menace,” she said. According to Cytonn’s Head of Investment for Public Markets, Maurice Oduor, good corporate governance and
sound professional ethics are essential to a well-functioning markets. “As our markets expand and firms become more exposed to the public, corporate governance is key in ensuring vibrancy,” he said. The announcement comes ahead of an advisory by Cytonn last week, urging Kenya’s insurance sector stakeholders to prepare for the worst following recent turbulence in the banking sector. Cytonn’s announcement highlights the annulment of a law capping accident victims’ pay, which placed maximum victim compensation at Sh3 million as an example of tough times for the sector. Proposed changes to the Insurance Act indicate the likelihood of stiff supervision. However, according to the report, limiting claims for accidents is not the correct way to bring discipline to the sector.
“A national registry of drivers linked to their insurance and claim history will be more efficient. Premiums can then be priced off, and increased, for poor driving records revenue diversity and product innovation,” the report states. The report indicates that increased risk based analysis on investments and deeper supervision on internal practices by insurance companies is expected to shed light on companies that are poorly run bringing confidence to investors. According to the report, diversification of revenue is key for profitability as insurance companies are largely unprofitable. Most insurance companies recorded decline in profitability that included Britam which posted Sh1 billion loss in 2015 compared to a Sh3.73 billion pretax profit in 2014. enock_x254
Vodacom will discontinue its mobile money service M-Pesa in South Africa after it failed to attract enough support in its slow-growing home market, the telecommunications firm said on Monday. The service, which enables text message transactions on mobile phones, has been hugely popular in Kenya and Tanzania, but Vodacom sees little prospect of achieving a critical mass of users in South Africa, Vodacom Chief Executive Shameel Joosub said in a statement. Vodacom cited South Africa’s weak economic growth, forecast by the government to grow at less than 1 percent this year, and high levels of financial inclusion as reasons for withdrawing the service.

Counterfeit agency nets phones worth Sh25m along city’s Luthuli The Anti–Counterfeit Agency yesterday seized contraband Samsung mobile phones worth over Sh25 million as they stepped up their mission to curb the sale of fake mobile phones in the Kenyan market. The agency staged a crackdown in Nairobi’s Luthuli Avenue, which is the largest electronic goods market in the city. “The raid campaign is not just to protect Samsung as the brand owners but further to educate and protect our consumers and promote a healthy economy among all products,” said Peter Mutula, the Director of AntiIllicit Trade Company. The Agency has called upon consumers and retailers to ensure that they purchase products from genuine points of sale and avoid buying counterfeit goods. Mutula cautioned stakeholders within the electronic goods industry against the importation of counterfeit goods citing the Anti-Counterfeit Act, 2008 which prohibits trade in imitation products. “If convicted of counterfeiting, the culprit shall be liable to; First offenders, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 year or Fine of 3 times the retail value of goods or both fine and imprisonment. Second offenders or Subsequent Conviction, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 15 years or a fine not less than 5 times the retail value of the goods or both fine and imprisonment,” added Mutula.
He said that the counterfeit phones were inferior in quality and workmanship compared to original products, which offer customers value and a manufacture’s guarantee.
“Search and seizure operations on counterfeit products run on continuous basis and as such, all perpetrators of illicit trade shall be brought to justice,” Mutula concluded.

Africa Oil announces 150m barrels KenGen moves to raise increase in Lokichar basin deposits Sh28.8bn in rights issue Canadian oil and gas company, Africa Oil Corp has today announced that an independent assessment of the Company’s Contingent Resources in the South Lokichar Basin in Kenya has been completed by DeGolyer and MacNaughton Canada Limited (“DMCL”). The estimated gross of resources in the South Lokichar Basin in Kenya have increased by 150 million barrels (or 24 per cent) to 766 million barrels of oil. “DMCL’s independent assessment confirms a significant increase in Contingent Resources for the South Lokichar Basin in Northern Kenya,” said Keith Hill, President and CEO of Africa Oil. “Based on the continuing drilling and testing program over the past year our best estimate is now that the company’s discoveries in the South Lokichar Basin contain gross unrisked Contingent Resources of 766 million barrels of oil, an increase

Africa Oil added that new build pipeline infrastructure and road upgrades will be required to permit field development and production

Although technical work has been completed by and on behalf of the Block 10BB/13T joint venture partners on crude oil export route options, there are currently no commercial agreements in place facilitate the pipelines construction or operation. Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has announced plans for a rights offering to raise about Sh28.8 billion. The company said in a statement issued today that it will be offering a total of 4.4 billion new ordinary shares at Sh6.55 per share to raise about Sh28.8 billion before expenses in new capital. “KenGen would like to inform all its esteemed shareholders and the general public that further to the approval of the Rights Issue by the Capital Markets Authority, the register of members shall be closed on Monday 16th May 2016 to facilitate the rights issue processing. All those members who will not be in the register by this time will not be eligible to participate in the Rights Issue,” the Board said in a statement released just hours ago. The offering is a renounceable rights issue to existing shareholders with an entitlement ratio of two for one. The offering comes barely a month
after KenGen announced a new 40-month plan to lower the cost of electricity by 47 per cent. In April KenGen said it plans to reduce the average cost of power from about Sh20 per kilowatt-hour to Sh10.54, a drop of 47.3 per cent. The lower prices are expected to lead to the growth of key sectors critical to the country’s economic goals. The plan includes projects and sectors slated to fuel economic growth within the region. They include the standard gauge railway, which requires 1,171 megawatts (MW) of power, ICT that needs 625MW, Lamu PortSouth Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) Corridor at 350MW, and iron and steel at 200MW.According to the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), planned mega projects are expected to take the total required electricity capacity to 4,196MW. The current peak demand is at 2,347MW. Dennis_x254

Cyberbullying at its finest Yet another one bites the dust When former Citizen tV anchor Julie Gichuru launched her mCheZa sMs betting platform late last year clearly sportPesa, betin and all the other sports betting firms were being given a run for their money. it was nothing but smooth sailing from then on but as a moth to a flame so is Julie Gichuru to controversy. Just a couple of months later and everything unraveled. mCheZa was accused of producing different results from the actual outcome off numerous games and in the end many Kenyans lost money that they thought they had won. some even went as far as to claim litigation upon the company seeing as the amount claimed is estimated to be in the millions. The entire undertaking from the launch of the company was tinged with a bit of curiosity especially because Gichuru is considered such a public figure who lent her name to a gambling empire. she came under fire on

social media from the people who felt they had been conned out of their money to social activists. one very vocal boniface Mwangi questioned her journalistic integrity and mentioned her father-in-law’s name in an extremely unflattering light. in a television interview recently released Gichuru claims that the attacks were orchestrated by ‘politicians, rival business people and other people in the corporate world’. Considering she is a person, who just by the virtue of their status lives a life that would be deemed ‘for public consumption’ there might be some truth to the matter. is it that or is this yet again another case of Kenyans and their predilection for mob mentality? in no other aspect of modern life is this more apparent than in cyber space. Cyber bullying’s anonymous and shadowy nature makes it too easy for culprits to get away with saying almost anything. and in many of these cases nothing worthwhile is ever resolved. The peculiar thing in Kenya is how this seems to mostly seems to happen to women in the public eye. Kiss FM’s adelle onyango has been the recipient of some of the most unwarranted and cruel taunts over the internet in the past few years. she has had everything from her appearance to even her charity work scrutinized and slighted. and following in the same path is another Kiss 100 staple Lynda nyangweso, who went as far as going on television to talk about her experiences after she got body-shamed. it’s no secret that mCheZa had technical issues and that people had in fact lost money but whether it was political intrigue or something else at hand, Kenyans evidently have to cool it with the twitter fingers.

Dear Dr X,
This guy and I have been dating for a year and a half now and at first I was wary about letting him meet my son but now I see that we might have a future together. I brought it up to him a few months ago that he should get to know my son better but he hasn’t made any effort on his part. He doesn’t seem to want to be a part of my son’s life, I don’t know how else to encourage him to step up to the plate.

Dating as a single mother can be complicated and a lot of caution has to be exercised especially where a child is concerned. If this is the man you see yourself spending the rest of your life with then there is really no other choice. Your child is the most important thing in your life and since that is never going to change he should purpose to get involved in your child’s life. You could try setting up activities to get them to interact more like family days or just creating an environment where they are able
to comfortably and effectively relate. Even watching a movie or playing games together can still be a great bonding experience. If your son is shy or if they have never had any formal introduction to each other then it might take some time for both of them to get used to being around each other, sometimes you just can’t force it. And if after all this with nearly two years together he still isn’t giving ample attention to your son then maybe it might be time to re-asses.

T
here was a time when all people in relationships really had to worry about was their significant other getting physical with someone else. Stepping outside the bounds of a relationship still mainly has to do with sexual activity but sometimes it doesn’t at all. Emotional cheating is nothing new but maybe it just seems so because it now has a name. It is a complex situation and many a times it is not something that may be quite apparent from the get-go. But the truth of the matter is that having an emotional affair could be even more devastating to a reationship than a purely physical or overtly sexual one. On one hand it might seem like a relief when the realisation dawns on you that your significant other might not have gotten busy with someone else but it’s easy to miss the big picture entirely. Because we tend to put a lot of emphasis on what we can see, the fear of the unknown is a major factor in why it takes so long to notice that your partner is receiving their share of in-
timacy from somewhere else. Some signs to look out for could be; If your partner suddenly pulls away from you This can take a variety of forms such as not giving you the time or attention you are used to receiving. If they seem distracted or otherwise occupied in a way that they were not before it could mean that they are giving attention to somebody else. Staying on the phone or on the computer too long or cancelling plans with no concrete reason might also be a way that this is expressed. A sad fact is that this physical distance could spell danger for the health of the relationship. A non-present partner is no partner at all. Picking fights When your partner suddenly feels the urge to be overly critical of any given thing whether it is of you or the relationship then something more may be at work. The fantasy of the other relationship or other person may make the current relationship pale in comparison to what he or she could
have. This can actually cause a major strain on a relationship seeing as any interaction between two partners could potentially be met with negativity. Constantly bringing up their ‘friend’ One very strange thing that happens to people starting out in new relationships is the way they can’t seem to stop mentioning the other person’s name. Well this might seem endearing to some, if you are in a legitimate relationship that is, but it is also a tell-tale sign of someone involved in an emotional affair. If your partner just can’t stop bringing up their ‘friend’ during casual conversation, or has to keep stressing to other people on the fact that they are ‘just friends’ then in their minds they might actually be more than just friends. Any type of cheating highlights a perilous relationship and in many cases emotional cheating leads to a sexual encounter so it’s always easier to nip it in the bud before things go too far.

Although henna has steadily gained a following not only in African culture in large part, it is also becoming more popular in the Western world. From its origins in in ancient India all the way to the Horn of Africa the dye and its intricate designs are a mainstay in culture and modes of dress. The dye itself is cultivated from a plant, the henna shrub. Among the Somali the crushed leaves are mixed with tea to form a sort of paste that will then be used as a stain. In traditional society, the henna would be applied with a rudimentary tool such as a stick or a twig but that has changed. Nowadays syringes and piping bags are not uncommon. The mixture is put into a little baggie with a nozzle that will function as the ‘pen’ or drawing tool. The paste is then left on until it forms into a dry crust that will be peeled off. Henna is generally worn by Somali women during weddings, Eid and Ramadan on their hands, arms, feet, neck and fingertips in ceremonies known as ‘dye parties’. The shapes are largely triangular and floral but some patterns can take days to be completed and involve multiple applications. The longer the dye stays on the darker the colour will appear. Even though henna is usually worn as an ornamental add-on it can be used to add colour to fabric and dye hair, even men use it to dye their beards into a bright red hue.

YOURSAY taking gangsterism to Mexico level Kaimenyi should resign over Huruma tragedy Kenya The assassination whistle- but who in his right thinking ours is now ABSURDISTAN.
Many, from the office of the Ombudsman, Kenya National Accreditation Services (KENAS), human right activist have voiced their displeasure at what happened at Huruma where a five-storey building collapsed eight days ago killing 51 people. Ironically, none has called for the resignation of Cabinet Secretary in charge of Land, Housing & Urban Development Prof Jacob Kaimenyi. Kenya is among the countries across the world that signed and adopted the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreement that seek to protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency’s regional administrator for Flint, Michigan resigned just over toxic lead contamination in tap water
because she saw herself as a failure to achieve the SDGs. In Flint’s water scandal, nobody died as a result of the contaminated water, but a couple of health problems were reported. Ironically, in the the Huruma tragedy, over 50 people have died, over 130 injured and dozens still missing, yet we are still talking of owners of the building, engineers to be charged and not Kaimenyi. We are all aware and cognisant of the fact that corruption and Kenyan politics are bedfellows and is hitting Kenya unlike before, but to the extent of risking lives of innocent people is not further from devil worshiping. Crowd trouble spells doom for Kenya soccer
Kenyan football has caught the headlines once again, albeit for the wrong reasons. The country has been handed a Sh1 million fine by Africa’s football governing body Caf. The fine, was announced yesterday by the Confederation of African Football. Looking at recent cases where the sport has been in the news for the wrong reasons, it seems even the new Football Kenya Federation
(FKF) has done very little to transform soccer activities in the country. From players’ unpaid allowances, inadequate funds for tournament preparations to poor, it appears the country soccer is headed to the dustbin. FKF under new chairman should prove to soccer lovers that indeed they replaced the Sam Nyamweya-led team to take our soccer to a great height. The federation must get its act
together and put its house in order. It must firmly deal with hooliganism once and for all. If things are left the way they are now, Kenya risks being banned by World football governing body Fifa. Or better still Kenya can disband the federation, forget about soccer and concentrate on rugby and athletics. — Harrison Kiprop
Luhyads must seek answers on Juma assassination Why are Luhyias so quiet about the death of their son Jacob Juma even though he mentioned those who planned to kill him before his death?. The community must wake up from the slumber and start demanding answers from Jubilee. This is the second Luhyia to be assassinated in a span of 1 month yet Luhyias are so comfortable sitting at home without demanding answers and prosecution of their killers.
The silence will set a bad precedence where the community’s sons and daughters will be assassinated in future, knowing too well the community is docile. The same people adversely mentioned again come to Western to ask for your votes. Wake up and show them that you are not a walk over community. Say no to assassination of your Sons. The time is now. — Emmanuel kipkorir
blower and anti-graft crusader Jacob Juma is a blow to the war on graft. But what worries me most is that such a prominent Kenyan and a member of opposition politburo is killed in cold blood and the whole security machinery plus the garrulous Cabinet Secretary acts like it is an ordinary death. Even the death of one lion attracted some attention from the government quarters,
sense will compare the two killings? It is simple, the country is in the hands of bandits. Now I can understand why Uganda President Yoweri Museveni ran away with his pipeline to Tanzania or why all countries ran away from LAPSSET? its simple, we are turning gangsterism into a celebrated national culture. We are becoming the new Mexico, the new Afghanistan,
Security ministry and the CS have become insecurity and have adopted a simple doctrine “curative not preventive”. CS Joseph Nkaissery cannot see it coming, he sees it once it has happened. Reminds me of the 17th century Swaziland. In small nations like Cape Verde such an issue is sorted within 24 hours, you will recall the recent shootings there. — Sherryl Mbogo
Vocational Colleges’ face-lift good for education The government’s move to refurbish 46 more vocational colleges across the country at a cost of Sh4.7 billion is a step in the right direction and will improve the country’s dwindling educational standards. Thousand Form Four leavers who did not attain the University grades should now take advantage of the initiative and enrol for various courses to equip themselves with knowledge and skills which have been lacking in the job market over some years Most vocational institutions still use outdated
and run-down facilities, therefore Sh4.7 billion set aside by the government for the face-lift in the next financial should be utilised for the intended purpose. Public institutions have incurred losses due to mismanagement, therefore Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i must follow up the funds to see to it that every coin is spent in the right way, Kenyans don’t want to witness cases, such as the Bungoma wheelbarrows. — Lenah Bosibori
NCA, County to blame for Huruma building tragedy The National Construction Authority (NCA), Nairobi County government and the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) should stop the blame game over who is responsible for the tragedy. I think they are all responsible for the deaths because it is the NCA that has the mandate to register and accredit contractors and

Kenya fined Sh1m over crowd trouble TUESDAY, MAY 10, 2016
Kenya has been slapped with a Sh1 million fine by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) over crowd trouble witnessed during Africa cup of Nations qualifier match against Guinea Bissau at Nyayo National Stadium. The match had to be temporarily stopped near the dying stages of the game after home fans protested the awarding of Guinea Bissau goal which they and the players claimed did not cross the line. The Football Kenya Federation was fined after it failed to ensure the safety of the Bissau players and the match officials administering the game who faced the wrath of irate fans.
Anti-riot police had to be called in to protect the players and match officials with teargas canisters being lobbed at the fans in the stands. Calm returned before the game proceeded for the final 7 minutes. Guinea Bissau went on to win the match 1-0. The African football governing body’s disciplinary board made the decision in a meeting on Monday in Johannesburg, South Africa. CAF further said Kenya risks playing its next round of matches in a neutral venue if FKF fails to stop cases of unruly behaviour from its fans.

Hamilton not worried about rocky start to F1 season
Lewis Hamilton is hell-bent on getting back to winning ways – and breaking Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg’s unbeaten run. Three-times F1 champ Hammy, 31 has finished second, third, seventh and second in the opening four grands prix because of engine snags. And last week Mercedes even wrote an open letter on their website saying they were “baffled” by the issues the British ace has suffered so far. But despite that, Hamilton heads for next Sunday’s crucial round in Spain insisting he is ready to bring Rosberg’s run of four wins in a row to a grinding halt in Barcelona. He downplayed his difficult start to 2016 describing it a case of “glass half full” as he starts to try to close the points gap to Nico Rosberg.
The world champion is 43 points behind his Mercedes team-mate after a series of problems in the first four races and victories for the German in all of them. Hamilton said eliminating the deficit will be a “big challenge” but added: “There’s a lot more to come from us.” He said he was “confident” Mercedes would solve his reliability problems. Hamilton has been afflicted by the same problem with the MGU-H - a part of the engine’s hybrid system - in qualifying for the last two races. In China four weeks ago it meant he had to start from the back and in the next race in Russia from 10th. He was up to second in Sochi and closing on Rosberg when his engine began to lose water pressure and he had to back off to ensure he reached the finish.
“We’ve had a hard time but the guys in the garage are doing a fantastic job and I’m really happy with how we’ve been working together,” Hamilton said ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. “Every weekend, we’ve got the car into a great place set-up-wise - I just haven’t been fully able to exploit it. So the glass is half full for me. “There’s a long way to go with 17 races left. “The team has been on it 24/7 since returning from Russia so I’m confident they’ll get to the bottom of the problems we’ve been having. “I know I’m still quick. I’ve known that since day one in testing and, when I’ve had clean air and a damage-free car this season, I’ve shown it on track. “I head to Spain confident of a good weekend.”
United wary of Carrol’s aerial attack ahead of tie From Page 16 Striker Anthony Martial missed Saturday’s 1-0 win at Norwich after complaining of tightness in his leg muscles, and Van Gaal was unable to confirm if the forward will be fit to play on Tuesday night. “I cannot say, because we have to wait,” said Van Gaal. “If his muscles are still tight, I won’t take any risks because, he’s a very important player. We don’t want a rupture and that is very important for us.” “We have a lot of respect for West Ham United,’ Van Gaal added. ‘They are a historical big club in England, in the Premier League. ‘We don’t want to spoil their party but we need the three points. That’s
different. ‘It is a big night and I think the players shall feel that also. But when I changed the old stadium, De Meer, with Ajax to the Amsterdam Arena (in 1996), the first matches in the Amsterdam Arena we lose. ‘It is always important the influence of the stadium. But when we are away we always have fantastic fans.’ Michael Carrick could also miss after a late injury against Norwich. United pulled a scrappy 1-0 win at Carrow Road and will be at their best to see off a wounded West Ham. Teenage strike Marcus Rashford will be called back in the squad after a rest with Martial missing.

Gudjohnsen, 37, named in Iceland Euro 20i6 squad Former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen has been named in Iceland’s Euro 2016 squad at the age of 37. Gudjohnsen, who has also played for Barcelona, Bolton, Stoke and Fulham, has been with Norwegian club Molde since February. His short spell with Chinese Super League club Shijiazhuang Ever Bright ended in November 2015. Iceland co-manager Lars Lagerback said: “If he hadn’t found a club in January, he would not have been picked.” Gudjohnsen, who has won 84 caps for Iceland, is arguably his
country’s most celebrated player, having enjoyed an international career spanning 20 years, in addition to winning two Premier League titles with Chelsea and the Champions League and La Liga with Barcelona. He retired from international football in November 2013 after Iceland lost a 2014 World Cup play-off to Croatia, but was recalled in March 2015. Gudjohnsen played three of Iceland’s 10 Euro 2016 qualifying matches, scoring one goal as they reached a major tournament for the first time.
He moved to Molde - coached by former Manchester United striker and Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - with the intention of playing regular games in order to secure a Euro 2016 place. Heimir Hallgrimsson, who co-manages Iceland with Lagerback, said: “He has taken a step up at Molde. He looks fitter and has shown the desire necessary.”
Former Chelsea and Barcelona player Eidur GudjoHnsen has earned himself a place in Iceland Euro 2016 squad at 37. Gudjohnsen retired from international football in 2013, but currently plays for Norway’s side Molde. He is the most decorated soccer player in Iceland

United wary of Carrol threat Manchester United travel to West Ham tonight knowing too well that anything short of a win will ruin their Champions League chances. Manager Louis van Gaal is anxious about Andy Carroll’s height and admitted Manchester United are vulnerable from set-pieces ahead of their Upton Park showdown after the suspension of “long player” Maroune Fellaini over violence conduct against Robert Huth during Leicester game at Old Trafford. A win at West Ham would propel United into the top-four box seat before Sunday’s final game of the season. Anything less and Manchester City hold the upper hand as both scramble for the last Champions League place. Slaven Bilic is set to deploy Carroll as a main striker tonight in a bid to ruffle the away back four after a heavy defeat in the hands of Swansea. Van Gaal is also wary of the Croatian seeking revenge for their FA Cup victory there last month. Van Gaal said he is ‘worried’ about the prospect of aerial attack and believes the significance of the night, a final Premier League fixture at the old ground, could work to his team’s disadvantage. “We are the smallest team in the Premier League so we have problems with set plays,”
the manager said. “I am worried about Carroll. I am always organising. We always have a meeting about that for every game and it also takes a long time to organise it well. “We also face an opponent who says goodbye to the stadium so they don’t want to lose in the old stadium. “They have already lost to Manchester United in the last FA Cup match. That’s also history. It’s not good for us and West Ham United are a very good team, I think.’ United will be the final visitors to Upton Park before West Ham move to the Olympic Stadium in a do-or-die tie. United midfielder Ander Herrera has warned West Ham that Manchester United are ready to gatecrash their Upton Park leaving party. Victory for United side will see them rival Manchester City on the final day for a place in the Champions League. “Hopefully they won’t enjoy the last game because we are playing for the top four too,” Herrera said. The Spain midfielder revealed he has already been in the West Ham stars’ shoes. He was in former club Athletic Bilbao’s side when they were beaten in their final game at their club’s historic San Mames Stadium in 2013. Levante were 1-0 winners on that occasion.
