Jubilee MPs warning on Jacob Juma death

M

Ps allied to the ruling Jubilee coalition have today warned politicians against making unsubstantiated claims on the death on businessman Jacob Juma who was murdered a week ago in Nairobi. Led by the National Assembly’s Security Committee

chairman Asman Kamama, four legislators from Jubilee asked those making claims on the cold blood execution of Juma to volunteer such information to the police. Mr Kamama warned that those making such claims were complicating investigations. “This is a serious matter and should not be handled on

rallies or in funerals. Let all those with information give it to the police for proper investigations,” Kamama said. “We are not helping or making the situation better by discussing the death of Juma in funerals and political rallies,” added the Tiaty lawmaker. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs issue appeal on Juma death WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2016

He said many versions have come up in relation to the businessman’s killing last Thursday night and that the work should now be left to police to piece up together any information and come up with a conclusive report. “Everybody has his own version on what caused the death of Juma. Let all the information be given to the police,” he said. “Politicians should not hijack the investigations for their own personal gain,” Kamama who was flanked by MPs Aloyce Leitoimanga (Samburu North), Joseph Kiuna (Molo) and David Were (Matungulu) told a press conference at Parliament building today. Their appeal came even as the team investigation the killing reported that they had made remarkable progress in the probe after finding two cartridges from an AK47 believed to have been used in the gruesome murder. “The team has made very good progress and they found two cartridges from Ak47 which is a weapon of choice for criminals,” Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Ndegwa Muhoro said. Initially, police had reported that no cartridges were found from the scene of the murder. But Mr Muhoro said the new development is “helpful because then

In a bid to unravel the mystery behind the killing of the controversial businessman, Muhoro said he has assigned more detectives to probe the killing which, according to opposition leaders, was politically motivated. assassinated Juma. We call for calm as detectives do all that is within their means to unravel the murder,” Muhoro said, adding “We are not specific as to any theory in the murder now, we are looking at all possible angles and detectives will be guided by the investigations they are carrying out.” Various leaders—including Senator Moses Wetangula has claimed that he met Juma days before his murder during which he confided in him people who were plotting to assassinate him. He has vowed to name them during his funeral set for Saturday at his Mungore village, Khasoko area of Bumula Constituency.

“We are urging anyone with information to come forward and give us whatever information they have, because they are those who have come out saying he spoke to them and confided in them people plotting to kill him and such like stories,” he said. “This is vital information to the team investigating the matter,” Muhoro said. A public viewing of the body will take place at Uhuru Park on Thursday afternoon, with top opposition leaders expected to attend. On Wednesday detectives said they had taken Juma’s vehicle to the DCI headquarters for further analysis. sam_x254 sam_x254

Appointment of a new Chief Justice begins next month

The process of appointing the next Chief Justice will begin next month with the new head of the judiciary expected to be sworn in by October, the Judicial Service Commission has stated. Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Ann Amadi said JSC has deliberated on the matter and prepared a comprehensive report that will ensure successful management of the process. The process of recruiting the next CJ is expected to take four months given the statutory timelines guiding it. It will commence by the JSC formally declaring in the Kenya Gazette a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice, advertise for qualified candidates to apply and then constituting a selection panel as required by the law before shortlisting for nomination by the commission in accordance with the JSC Act. Upon receiving applications from interested candidates, the JSC shall publish in the local dailies the names of the applicants including those shortlisted. Members of the public will then be allowed to provide in writing any information of interest to the commission in relation to any of the applicants. The JSC shall independently review and verify information provided by the members of the public. Amadi stated that the position will be open to serving and non-serving members of the Judiciary who may be drawn from the bar, bench, academia or corporate fields. “The Chief Justice can be recruited from any rank as long as the candidate meets the requirements of article 166 of the constitution,” Amadi said. Contrary to haggling claims of the preferred candidates for the position has already been determined, Amadi said that the process will be strictly guided by the dictates of constitutional principles. She termed reports that have appearing in sections of the media over the appointment of the next Chief Justice as misleading and with no basis. “The JSC wishes to reiterate that in recruiting the Chief Justice, the Commission will be strictly guided by constitutional principals and best practices and shall conduct the exercise in a fair, just and transparent manner,” she said. In determining the qualifications of individual applicants, Amadi stated that the JSC will look at professional competence, written and oral communication skills, integrity, fairness, good judgement, legal experience and demonstrable commitment to public and community service. Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is set to retire in June 2016, a year before he was expected to leave office. His term is to expire on June 22, 2017, having taken up the job in June 2011. However, the CJ announced that he has opted to retire early to give the JSC enough time to recruit the next Chief Justice.

Woman tells of agony, pain and death of 5 relatives killed in Huruma building tragedy “I have been asking God, why you took all the five members of my family?” it is a question Yvonne Achieng, a resident of Huruma is yet to get an answer. Her pain is unimaginable after losing five of her close relatives including her son during the May 1 tragedy which claimed 52 lives. On the fateful night, Achieng had left her residential place for work, where she left her baby, mother, two kids of her sister at the one bedroom house. “I was working night shift that day,” she told Capital FM News on Tuesday. “I wonder why God took away five people at once.” The sister met her death when she had gone to pick her two kids when the building collapsed. As if the disaster was not e n ou g h ,

Achieng had to wait for 5 days to know the fate of her relatives. “Every day, I would visit the site hoping to at least receive some good news,” Achieng told Capital News. “I would later visit various hospitals and the sad part, the city mortuary.” All this time, she was trying to call her mother, who was trapped in the rubble, but the phone was not going through. She pointed out that, her sister’s phone would ring but went unanswered. It is a sad tale that hundred others share, after losing their relatives and even property during the tragedy. On Monday, the Government offered financial and household support to Achieng and more than 190 other victims of the Huruma collapsed building tragedy. The support include 3 months’ rent, household items, food and books for school going children during a ceremony attended by Nairobi Woman Representative Rachael Shebesh and Senator Mike Sonko. C a b i n e t Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Sicily Kariuki who addressed the victims urged N a i r o b i residents to vacate all

hazardous buildings, to avoid a similar disaster. “There is nothing that we can equate to life…please, don’t reside in those houses,” she appealed. She said women and children had suffered greatly during the tragedy and thus, “the need to offer them the household support.” “We need each and every one of us to do what we can to help the families that survived get back to their feet as soon as possible,” she said. The CS further announced that all youths involved during the rescue operation will be admitted to the National Youth Service.

Senator Sonko, who also offered financial support to the victims, vowed to take legal action against the county government for negligence. “Those people died because of negligence of the County Government. I have instructed 6 lawyers to sue them…the victims must be compensated,” a visibly angry Senator said. The Senator offered free transport services for all the 52 bodies. The County Government has also been put on spot, over failure to ensure the city residents reside in safe houses.

Tanzania beats Kenya to rapid transit system Kenya has been beaten in the quest to launch East Africa’s first mass rapid transit system by Tanzania. This is after the country (Tanzania) launched its highly anticipated rapid transit transport system yesterday. Dubbed the Dar es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit (Dart), the transport system piloted yesterday in the country’s capital. The system is expected to improve the city’s notorious traffic jams. The swanky new blue buses were launched as part of a multi-billion shilling project to be undertaken by Usafiri Dar es Salaam (UDA) and a group of private daladala (matatu) operators. The transport system will see commuters pay a maximum of Tsh 800 (about Ksh37), a drop from

the Tsh 1200 to 1400 (Ksh 55 to 65) initially proposed by the system’s operator. Shorter routes on the service would attract between Tsh 400 to 650 (Ksh18 to Sh30). The service comes as a relief to thousands of Tanzanian commuters who were eagerly waiting for it’s launch. The Surface and Marine Transport Authority (Sumatra) Director General Gilliard Ngewe said that for the next two days the service would be free to all commuters as its electronic billing system is tested by the crew. “The services offered will be punctual and well-coordinated as the people involved will handle the matter in a professional way to meet customer

satisfaction,” Mr Ngewe said. The fares will then be charged to the commuters as of Thursday. The buses will operate for 19 hours every day from 5am. Kenya had launched its own masterplan for a state of the art rail and road system last year in an effort to address the city’s traffic gridlocks that have become the norm of the day. The project estimated to cost well over Ksh 100 billion will be executed in Nairobi’s Metropolitan area and is scheduled for commencement in 2017. The project’s feasibility study and design were awarded to INGEROP, a leader of consortium, by the European Union on behalf of the Kenyan Government. @harrison_x254

Sanders wins West Virginia to prolong race with Clinton Bernie Sanders has won the West Virginia primary in the Democratic race for the presidential nomination, US media project. The Vermont senator still trails Hillary Clinton in the overall contest for delegates but this win keeps his slim hopes alive. “We are going to fight for every last vote,” he said in a victory speech that also attacked Republican Donald Trump. Mr Trump was declared the winner in West Virginia and in Nebraska. His last remaining rivals dropped out last week but remained on the ballot. But Mr Trump faces a huge task in trying to get the Republican party behind him, as doubts persist about his substance and style. House Speaker Paul Ryan, the party’s highest-ranking elected official, has said he is unable to endorse the New York businessman because he lacks conservative principles. With Mr Trump now the Republican presumptive nominee, it was the Democratic race that provided the focus for Tuesday’s primaries. Mr Sanders’s victory in West Virginia, where Mrs Clinton convincingly beat Barack

Obama in 2008, will prolong the Democratic contest. In a speech delivered in Salem, Oregon, which holds its primary next week, Mr Sanders vowed to fight on. “We have now won primaries and caucuses in 19 states and let me be as clear as I can be we are in this campaign to win the Democratic nomination.” He pointed to polls as evidence that he remained the best Democratic candidate to beat Donald Trump. And he turned his fire on the billionaire property developer for insulting women, Hispanics, Muslims, African Americans and veterans. Despite his differences with the former secretary of state Mrs Clinton, Mr Sanders said, they had one common goal defeating Mr Trump.

Exit polls in West Virginia suggested one-third of those who voted for Mr Sanders would switch to Mr Trump in a general election between the two men. With victories in Indiana and now West Virginia, Bernie Sanders has started another winning streak against Hillary Clinton. Like his five-state run in April, however, pollsters say it will do little to slow her steady march to the Democratic nomination. Exit polls show the West Virginia vote was particularly quirky. Almost 40% of Democratic voters there said they wanted a president less liberal than Barack Obama - and that group favoured avowed socialist Sanders by more than a two-to-one margin. Mr Sanders also

overwhelmingly carried the 27% who want a president more liberal than Mr Obama. Such a result makes sense if some of Sanders’s support is, in fact, an anyone-but-Clinton vote. At this point the Vermont senator will likely take help wherever he can get it. He should be competitive in the next four contests, but could hit a wall in the June mega-prize, California. Its diverse electorate favours Mrs Clinton, and anything but an unprecedented Sanders win there would seal his fate. Until then, however, Mr Sanders continues to be a constant and unpleasant reminder to Mrs Clinton that there are Democratic voters still unwilling to fully get on board her campaign.

UK PM calls Nigeria ‘fantastically corrupt’ UK Prime Minister David Cameron has described Nigeria and Afghanistan as “fantastically corrupt” in a conversation with the Queen. He was talking about this week’s anti-corruption summit in London. “We’ve got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain... Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world,” he was overheard saying. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, elected last year after vowing to fight corruption, said he was “shocked”. And a senior Afghan official said the characterisation was “unfair”. After Mr Cameron’s comments, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby intervened to say: “But this particular president is not corrupt... he’s trying very hard,” before Speaker John Bercow said: “They are coming at their own expense, one assumes?” The conversation took place at Buckingham Palace at an event to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, attended by political leaders and other public figures. At a garden party later

on Tuesday, the Queen herself was caught on camera making unguarded comments about the Chinese government. She told a senior police officer that she had heard the Chinese had been very rude to Britain’s ambassador to China during President Xi’s state visit last year. The Queen also agreed that the Chinese state visit had been a testing time for the police and told the officer it was “bad luck” that she had been in charge of security at the time. In Transparency International’s 2015 corruption perception index, Afghanistan was ranked at 167, ahead of only Somalia and North Korea, Nigeria was at 136. With his remark, the archbishop was believed to have been referring to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, who won elections last year promising to fight widespread corruption. In response, Mr Buhari said his government was deeply “shocked and embarrassed” by the PM’s comments. Speaking through his spokesman, he suggested that Mr Cameron must be referring to Nigeria’s past notoriety for corruption before his coming to power last year.

Bernie Sanders refused to go gently into the night on Tuesday with another last-minute primary win over Hillary Clinton that comes despite her commanding lead in the national race for delegates. In a fundraising email sent out soon after polls closed, the leftwing senator hailed his victory in West Virginia and said: “Every vote we earn and every delegate we secure sends an unmistakable message about the values we share, the country’s support for the ideas of our campaign, and a rejection of Donald Trump and his values.” He added: “There is nothing I would like more than to take on and defeat Donald Trump, someone who must never become president of this country,” he said.

US warns on online lenders business: The US

Treasury Department has warned of the fragility of the business models of a new crop of online lenders, a day after revelations of alleged mis-selling of loans at Lending Club shook confidence in the sector. A white paper released on Tuesday represented the first attempt by a US regulator to produce a framework for supervising an industry which sprang up in the wake of the financial crisis. Operating under a patchwork of state and federal rules, online lenders such as SoFi and OnDeck Capital have grown rapidly. They have been winning over consumers and small businesses by claiming to provide faster cash at better rates than the lumbering brick-and-mortar lenders.

Debt and pensions costing government 98 pc of revenue The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has revealed that public debt and pensions are costing the government close to 98 per cent of its total revenue. According to a report released by IEA this morning, public debt accounted for Sh417.3 billion in 2015/2016 and is projected to shoot to as high as Sh466.5 billion in the 2016/2017 fiscal year. Pensions are projected to cost the government Sh63.1 billion once the budget is read, up from Sh42.1 billion this fiscal year. Speaking in response to the government’s preparation of the budget to be read next month, Kwame Owino from the IEA further noted that public debt will jump to Sh542.5 billion in 2017/2018 fiscal year but would lower thereafter as the government would have done away with the current short term huge loans. “Given the government has huge short term loans which would be complete by 2018, the public debts would likely fall tremendously,” said Owino. According to IEA, the interest for internal loans is five times higher than the interest rates for external loans like the Euro Bond. Speaking during the analysis of the Budget Estimate 2016/2017, John Mutua a Public Finance officer at the IEA noted that currently, the National Executive and County governments account for 65 per cent and 12 per cent of Kenyan revenue, respectively. IEA attributes graft to the huge difference in interest rates for internal and external loans.

Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Chief Executive Officer , Mr Kwame Owino. IEA has urged Parliament to ensure accurate budget revision, leading to rising public expenditure against fiscal policy goals. “The government should be more serious when it comes to budget preparation since to ensure the estimate of expenditure rhymes with budget

expenditure,” said Mutua. The government of Kenya owes European countries close to Sh689 billion. According to the Treasury, the budget has been prepared against the backdrop of slower global growth and increased uncertainty.

However, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich is optimistic that global economic recovery will continue to be moderate, although the outlook has weakened further since October 2015 due to increased risks. enock_x254

Transformer vandalism falls as Kenya Power cracks whip Cases involving transformer vandalism have fallen significantly over the last four months since electricity provider, Kenya Power intensified surveillance. The company’s crackdown is part of an ongoing campaign by the firm aimed at sealing all loopholes in a bid to drive down revenue loss. The move includes cutting illegal power connections and enhanced safeguarding of electricity assets. Kenya Power’s Acting Manager for Security Services Major Geoffrey Kigen has confirmed that a total of 174 people have been arrested for electricity theft and vandalism between January and April this year. “Our footprint has increased and we are constantly carrying out surveillance on equipment and establishments through our internal resources and community policing initiatives,” said Major Geoffrey Kigen (Rtd) in a statement yesterday. Most vandalism cases were witnessed in Western Kenya and Mount Kenya regions, both accounting for 58 arrests during the period under review. However, cases of transformer vandalism have been on a decline as the company deploys technical protection measures such as hosting of transformers above high voltage lines, welding and ring fencing. Mr Kigen said that there has been a tremendous reduction in all aspects of loss by about 118 per cent, adding that vandals are now being handed stiffer penalties and jail terms. enock_x254

World’s biggest investors to convene IMF terms Kenya’s GDP growth impressive but stresses on need for major reforms in Nairobi for UNCTAD conference

Some of the world’s biggest investors are set to convene in Nairobi later this year for the upcoming United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). More than 7,000 delegates will come to Nairobi to attend the 14th session of UNCTAD that will be held from July 17 to July 22, UNCTAD Secretary General, Dr Mukhisa Kituyi has confirmed. Speaking during a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House in Nairobi, Dr Kituyi said the conference will be attended by many Heads of States and will consist of a ministerial conference, a youth forum and the 4th World Investment Forum. He noted that Kenya stands to gain from the conference, which will be attended by the biggest investors in the world and mayors of all major cities. He said several Heads of State and Government officials have already confirmed

attendance while 50 countries have already sponsored youth to attend the conference. “The success of the conference is important for our country and Africa as a whole. It will have a lasting impact on the future of the economy,” said the President. Kituyi, the country’s former Minister for Trade, added that the July 2016 session will focus on fighting extreme poverty in developing countries and ways of banishing it by 2030. “It will also focus on promoting emerging technologies to the benefit of humanity especially the vulnerable,” he explained. Kituyi also says that the conference will bring together think-tanks that will forge ways on how UNCTAD can live up to its promise to hold governments and the corporate sector from developing countries accountable for the state of their societies.

Kenya needs major fiscal reforms if the country is to maintain its economic growth trajectory, create employment and improve the livelihoods of its people, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr. David Lipton has said. Despite having what experts have termed as an impressive growth in gross domestic product (GDP), Kenya’s government will need to address its budget deficit among other concerns if it plans to stay afloat. “I am impressed by Kenya’s achievements in recent years. Despite strong global headwinds, real GDP growth averaged 5.5 per cent per year and inflation broadly remained within target during 2013–15,” Lipton said during the conclusion of his visit to Kenya yesterday.

Speaking in Nairobi, he noted that there have been significant improvements in public infrastructure, in particular in electricity generation and the road network. He added that Kenya has also made remarkable progress in improving access of the population to financial services, including through mobile banking. “Many structural reforms have advanced, including in the areas of devolution, public financial management, and business regulations. We agreed with the authorities that continued reforms are needed to sustain economic growth and spread its benefits to the population. It will be important to undertake a growthfriendly reduction in fiscal deficits over the medium term to maintain debt sustainability and reduce external

current account deficits,” he said. “We support the government’s effort to strengthen revenue mobilization, review its expenditure priorities, and increase the quality of expenditures. Also, recent challenges in the financial sector have demonstrated the urgency of continuing to strengthen supervision and regulation of the banking system, as well as to bolster the financial system’s safety nets,” Lipton explained. The IMF has since pledged to support Kenya through policy advice and capacity building. “I had the opportunity to meet and exchange views with His Excellency, President Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary for Finance Henry Rotich, Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya Patrick Njoroge, business leaders, and representatives of the civil society. ” Lipton said. BIZ BRIEFS ICT CS calls out telecom firms over low quality services

Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary Joseph Mucheru has accused telecom companies of shirking their responsibility, stating that their level of compliance to quality assurance remains wanting. The CS has urged the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to come up new strategies that will push mobile service providers to ensure Quality of Service (QoS). Speaking at the inauguration of the new board on Tuesday, he said the authority should come up with tougher penalties under the law that will see telecom companies avoid issues like call drops or occasional poor network. In the financial year 2014/2015, none of the three mobile network operators met the set minimum Quality of Service threshold of 80 per cent.

Chase Bank Limited assures depositors that ‘all is well’

Chase Bank Limited, which was put under receivership by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) earlier this year following reports of mismanagement, is calling on its depositors to use its services. The lender has been in high gear, moving to reassure its clients that most of its services are up and running. The lender today sent out a statement to many of its customers, apologizing yet again for its recent debacle. “Your money is safe. We recognize the fact that you have been regrettably inconvenienced and remain deeply committed to supporting you and your business,” the bank said in its statement. “You can access your previous deposits up to a maximum of Sh1 million. ” the lender added.

Safaricom Ltd sees EBITDA earnings jump 17 per cent

Safaricom has said its guidance for earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in the year to March 2017 was Sh89 billion to Sh92 billion. The company, which is Kenya’s leading mobile operator, announced the figures today at an investor briefing in Nairobi. Safaricom, which is 40 per cent owned by UK-based conglomerate Vodafone, earlier said EBITDA for the fullyear to March 2016 rose 17 per cent to 83.1 billion shillings. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) is a measure of a company’s operating performance. It is used as a way to evaluate a company’s performance without having to factor in financing decisions, accounting decisions or tax environments.

Equity to focus on regional expansion following 19pc Q1 profit

Equity Group Holdings, Kenya’s second largest bank by assets, has confirmed plans on expanding its footprint across the African region following a 19 per cent rise in its first-quarter pre-tax profit. The lender said its growth would come from expanding its subsidiaries rather than new acquisitions. Speaking during a briefing yesterday in Nairobi, Equity Group Chief Executive Dr James Mwangi said he would focus on expanding his bank’s existing subsidiaries in the region. “We will focus on these subsidiaries and make them substantial actors in the markets they are in,” he told an investor briefing. Equity already has units in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Sudan and recently acquired a lender in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lender reported a pre-tax profit for the first quarter of 2016 of Sh7.3 billion as it secured cheaper funds

from shareholders and creditors while increasing lending to customers. Its net profit for the period under review reached Sh5.1billion, up from Sh4.2 billion during the same period last year. The bank increased its borrowed funds by 76 per cent to Sh46.0 billion. The extra funds came with an interest rate of Libor plus one, or about 4 per cent, and was lent to customers at prevailing double-digit rates, Dr Mwangi said. Equity’s net loans increased by 22 per cent from the same period last year to 275.0 billion shillings. Total costs grew 17 per cent during the period as staff costs and loan loss provisions rose. Non-performing loans stood at 3.8 per cent of the total, below the 8 percent recorded for the industry in March. The bank has seen its customer numbers jump from roughly 9.5 million to close the first quarter of 2016 at over 10.3 million. “We closed the first quarter with

Equity Group Chief Executive Dr James Mwangi. an asset base of Sh430 billion - a 15 per cent growth whilst maintaining portfolio. Cumulatively, our m-banking has risen to 196.6 million transactions as at March 2016, translating to value of Sh177.3 billion,” Dr Mwangi added. He explained that the country has a robust economy, which requires

support in credit facilities for the sake of development opportunities “Stability in the foreign exchange market continues to be supported by improved forex reserves currently at $7.6 billion (Sh765 billion),” Dr Mwangi noted.

The Automation Portal, which is the first of its kind in the market will allow applicants to track their application online thus reducing the

need to contact HR or the bank to make enquiries on the status of an applicant’s loan. In his keynote speech, Mr. Kibaara noted that NIC bank is committed to providing a platform for growth to both the customers and their businesses through innovative solutions. He further added that it was crucial that online banking was embraced as it is the future of banking as the world goes digital. Once the loan application is complete, an alert is sent to the company’s Human Resource department to review and approve the loan before it is sent to the bank for authorization and funds transfer. “We are the first bank in East Africa to go to market with this solution and are proud to offer our customers solutions which make their lives easier. We pride ourselves as an innovative bank and are always looking for solutions to cater for our customer’s needs, more so in line with our NIC NOW philosophy,” said NIC’s Group Managing Director John Gachora. kevin_x254

In the joint venture deal announced yesterday, Ringier One Africa Media (ROAM) was officially launched becoming Africa’s leading classifieds company, comprising some of the continent’s leading homegrown brands, including Brighter Monday, Cheki, BuyRent Kenya, PrivateProperty Nigeria, ZoomTanzania and PigiaMe, among others. Jointly, the existing shareholders of both companies have committed to continue to significantly invest into the JV to build out its market leadership. “As millions more Africans come online to connect and conduct commerce, predominantly via mobile, Ringier One Africa Media is strategically positioned to lead the marketplace’s double digit growth, covering both vertical - car, real estate and jobs - and horizontal classifieds businesses,” Ringier One Africa Media said in a statement yesterday. The new joint venture between the companies and further joint investment into its brands will enable the creation of nation-wide synergetic classifieds systems allowing for improved user experience and wider audience reach across currently six African countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania Uganda and Senegal. Ringier Africa brings into the joint venture extensive marketing & distribution capabilities, its unparalleled knowledge of horizontal classifieds in some of the continent’s biggest economies, and its considerable group experience in applying local and

“We have known Ringier Africa for many years as we have both pioneered these markets in parallel and are really excited to be joining hands at last. The synergies are huge and we fit so well together,” Clarke added. “One Africa Media has pioneered the vertical classifieds market in Africa - and Ringier has built and grown some of the biggest horizontal marketplaces on the continent. Mobile commerce driving revenue growth in the hotel industry Mobile commerce is driving revenue growth in the hotel industry both locally and abroad. A new report has revealed that mobile bookings of hotels accounted for what researchers have called an impressive average of 49 per cent globally. It has since emerged that mobile transactions account for most of the overall growth in travel bookings since 2014. This is according to Criteo, a leading market research firm. The worldwide research, carried between Q2 2014 and Q2 2015 indicates an increase from 12 per cent to 23 per cent of bookings made via mobile devices. The research comes at a time when Kenya currently leads the continent in terms of internet connectivity with the highest bandwidth per person on the continent, the fastest speeds, and some

of the lowest internet costs, according to a presentation by Internet provider Liquid Telecom. According to the data, short-stay customers seem to be satisfied with doing their pre-journey research on mobile, while longer-stay guests opt to do their prep up research on desktops. The above findings are collaborated by a study by Jovago.com, an African focused online hotel booking company which recorded an impressive growth on mobile bookings; from 10 per cent in Q1 2014 to an average of over 60 per cent in Q2 -2016. This growth has been credited to an availability of complete and more accessible platforms especially in terms of apps; which according to the research by Criteo, are generating about 49 per cent of all mobile bookings globally, up from just 12

per cent a year ago. This definitely translates to a need for providers to invest more in in-app advertising and proper tracking in order to meet their market base and target customers in their most ‘comfortable’ zone. “Investment in the continent’s connectivity is creating multiple benefits that Kenya demonstrates as a clear example of a virtuous circle, where each investment accelerates the next, with an ever increasing footprint of beneficiaries,” said Liquid Telecom Kenya CEO Ben Roberts, who was speaking during a previous conference in Nairobi. Statistics by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) project the proportion of households with Internet access will reach 56 per cent by 2020. kevin_x254

Africa’s most innovative, expansive & profitable classifieds company together,” said Ringier Africa & Asia CEO Robin Lingg. On his part, Ringier Africa GM Leonard Stiegeler noted that the joint focus of ROAM will be to serve its users across Africa with best-in-class marketplace platforms. “Combining the group’s strengths will help our users reach a larger audience with their offers and find what they

are looking for easier and faster,” he explained. Since it was founded in 2010 by Justin Clarke and the late Carey Eaton, One Africa Media has aggregated and grown Africa’s largest marketplaces in employment, auto and property. Established in 2011, Ringier Africa is the continent’s leading diversified digital media company - with a focus on content, classifieds, e-commerce and digital agencies. Dennis_x254

Kenya tops list of countries earmarked in Standard Chartered expansion plan Kenya has secured the top spot in a list of countries Standard Chartered has targeted as part of an ongoing expansion strategy. The lender, a subsidiary of British multinational financial conglomerate Standard Chartered, is set to increase its operations in Kenya as the country’s economy continues to sustain its upward trajectory. “We are looking for bright spots in the world and Kenya is one of them,” said Standard Chartered Bank Group Chief Executive Officer, Bill Winters. Speaking at a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi yesterday, he added that Kenya is on top of the list of the countries the bank is targeting for expansion. President Kenyatta asked the bank to start focusing on Small and Medium

Enterprises as well as agriculture. “I urge you to venture again in agriculture since it is the right time as we focus on value addition on agricultural products,” said the President. Kenyatta also appealed to the bank to invest in infrastructure especially in building roads through an annuity programme as well as other projects that require direct investor funding. The President said the Government is committed to ensure that the financial sector remains healthy. “We are working closely with our new Central Bank Governor to remove the weakness that has existed in the sector,” said the President. According to Winters, Standard Chartered will support the Government’s plan to raise the bar for the banking sector.

Soul- searching Bieber goes bare feet in Boston It is no secret that Justin Beiber has been on an emotional roller coaster of late from cancelling meet and greets, bursting into tears mid-performance and now banning fans from asking for photographs. And now, it seems Justin Bieber just needed a time out from his schedule and shoes. The 22-year-old turned heads as he walked around a Boston park barefoot before wandering back to his hotel room with no footwear. The mega star - who performed in Boston last night - was then photographed by Instagram user Windsor Dalton, walking barefoot along the garden’s path.

he rains are already here, falling in the morning, noon and even in the evening making our homes and roads swampy causing damage and even destroying our properties. Here are some tips on how you can improve your drainage and making your home a little cosier. Manage running water Handle rain water that’s running off the roof or paved areas rain water from your yard. This will also help your family from getting infected with water-borne diseases, that is, because you would have destroyed breeding places. Clean your gutters regularly This is to make sure that they are not clogged with leaves or mud to make it easy for water to pass through and also Consider window-well covers If you happen to have a well located in your home or compound it would be wise to have some sort of protection water from seeping through the window- well and this will help in keeping water from entering the house.

he tea in your cabinet does make a comforting drink when it’s cold outside and it goes great with breakfast but did you know it can be invaluable as an addition to your beauty routine? Body scrub It’s easy, all you need is some tea brewed in half a cup of water, add one part tea leaves to three parts sugar and top up the rest with some of your favorite natural ingredients like honey and lemon even some essential oils if it pleases you. Use it as your exfoliator after your shower for maximum effect. Face mask Here the main ingredients are green tea, honey and baking soda. Mix equal parts tea leaves and baking soda in a cup. Add

the honey until the mixture is viscous or to your personal preference. You could even add an essential to the face mask for some fragrance and to make the scrub easier to spread. The honey acts as a moisturiser and the tea soothes skin enhancing its natural glow and smoothness. Hair rinse Green tea, water and honey are used to create a hair rinse that not only helps curb shedding but also increases hair sheen. Brew 2 - 3 teabags in 2 cups of water and rinse your hair with it on wash day. Remember to make sure the solution has cooled to room temperature before steeping your scalp @christine_x254 in it.

West Ham to issue life bans for Manchester United bus attackers West Ham will issue life bans to any fans found responsible for attacking the Manchester United team coach before Tuesday’s game at Upton Park. A window on the bus was smashed and the kick-off delayed by 45 minutes as a result of the trouble. “We are aware that there were some supporters outside the Boleyn Ground who didn’t act in an appropriate way,” a club statement read. The Football Association also condemned the “unsavoury incidents”. It added: “We will work closely with both clubs and the Metropolitan Police to fully investigate these matters.” West Ham eventually won the Premier League match 3-2 in what was their final game at the ground before moving to the Olympic Stadium. The club statement continued: “It was an extraordinary night full of extraordinary moments in front of extraordinary fans, 99% of whom behaved impeccably and were a credit to the club. “We have already had thousands of tweets and emails from fans to say how proud they were to be a part of such a special evening in West Ham’s history. “However, we are aware that there were some supporters outside the Boleyn Ground who didn’t act in an appropriate way when the Manchester United team bus was damaged. “That was not acceptable and we will work with the police to identify those responsible and ban them for life.” Footage filmed on the coach by United winger Jesse Lingard showed the players shouting, screaming, laughing and hiding on the floor as the coach was hit by objects thrown outside the ground. “It wasn’t nice, the coach got smashed

up,” said Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney told Sky Sports. “I’m sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done.” Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, whose side missed a chance to move up into fourth in the table added: “I think the images shall tell everything.” Speaking immediately in the wake of

the incident, West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan played it down, telling BBC Radio 5 live that their opponents should have arrived earlier. “I don’t understand why United couldn’t get here at 4pm,” he said. “They could have got here early. They knew it would be busy. It’s crazy. “There was congestion in the street and they couldn’t get the coach in. There were people around the coach, but

there was no attack on the coach.” A Metropolitan Police spokesman said an “appropriate policing plan” was in place, adding: “We are aware that a number of items were thrown towards Manchester United’s coach. “One police officer and a member of the public sustained minor injuries. There have been no arrests.” Jonathan Pearce, who was commentating on the game for the

BBC, said the incident had “denied” many West Ham fans “a perfect evening”. Following the match, there were fireworks to mark the end of West Ham’s 112-year stay at the Boleyn Ground. A succession of taxi cabs brought a number of the club’s former players onto the pitch, to join in the celebrations with the current squad.

Hammers ruin United’s party From Page 16 The game itself was played out in a cauldron, a cacophony of noise resounding around Upton Park for the entirety of a thrilling game. There were some moments when those inside did not cover themselves in glory, keeping the ball from visiting goalkeeper De Gea, which ironically led to the move that brought Martial’s equaliser and then when a fan emerged from the Bobby Moore Stand and got close to the Spain goalkeeper, taunting him before he was dragged away by stewards. The Hammers wanted to end the Upton Park era with a performance worthy of the old place - and they went out with a bang, producing an outstanding display which hinted at rich promise for what lies ahead. Slaven Bilic’s side dominated for long spells, playing exciting, fluent football that provided a constant threat. The Croatian may not have been West Ham’s

first choice but he has proved charismatic, astute and someone with a sure touch when it comes to knowing what this club means and demands. He was in touch with the emotions of the occasion in the closing moments, tie and jacket discarded as he inspired his team to victory, looking almost moved to tears at the end. West Ham remain on course for the Europa League at the end of a fine season - a deserved reward to take to the Olympic Stadium next season. While Captain Mark Noble was voted the man of the match for his combative performance in the heart of the Hammer’s midfield, playmaker Dimitri Payet also starred, providing the two assists during the game. His performance before his withdrawal towards the end should surely earn him a place in the French squad for Euro next month.

Dejected Manchester United players leave the pitch at Upton Park after their 3-2 loss to West ham last night. The defeat all but leaves United out of a top four finish.

Zico named KPL coach of the month WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2016

Posta Rangers coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno has been named the SportPesa Premier League Coach of the Month for April. Otieno, whose team is unbeaten in 11 of their 12 matches thus far played, was presented with his award on Tuesday. The former Harambee Stars coach and player said he was delighted to have had his efforts recognized. “The award is a real motivator, but I want to dedicate it to my players and colleagues in the technical bench for they all made it possible for the team to perform well,” he said. Otieno beat off the challenge of Gor Mahia’s Marcelo Ferreira, James Nandwa of Posta Rangers as well as Francis Kimanzi of Mathare United. The former Sony Sugar and Gor Mahia tactician said that he gets motivation from the underdog status that has been slapped on his team. “We started well and when the players saw that they are winning against the stronger teams, they gained more confidence and we kept believing. We also have a quality squad of experienced payers most of whom are at the peak of their careers. We will compete and we are competitive,” he said. In February, Rangers striker Timothy Otieno was named Footballer of the Month, indeed illustrating the quality of the team and performance so far. They are currently lying third in the league table with 21 points. Winners are selected by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya.

Posta Rangers coach Zedekiah Otieno receives his coach of the month trophy from Fidelity Insurance marketing and business development manager Nicholas Malesi yesterday.

West Hams Winston Reid celebrates scoring his team’s winning goal against Manchester United last night. The goal all but ended United’s hopes of a top four finish.

Hammers ruin United’s party West Ham United marked their departure from Upton Park after 112 years with a thrilling victory that may have ended Manchester United’s chances of Champions League qualification. Louis van Gaal’s side knew victory here and at home to Bournemouth this weekend would secure a top-four place - but this loss means Manchester City are two points clear of them going into their final game at Swansea City. The visitors’ team coach arrived late and was attacked by Hammers fans as it made its way into the stadium, causing the kick-off to be delayed. When the action got under way West Ham dominated and should have led by more than Diafra Sakho’s goal at the break. Antony Martial turned the game on its head and had Manchester United in charge with only 18 minutes remaining, first ending a sweeping move then beating Darren Randolph at his near post to put the visitors ahead. West Ham, however, were not to be denied and two towering headers in the space of four minutes from Michail Antonio and Winston Reid gave them the victory they richly deserved. Manchester United had their fate in their own hands knowing two victories - here and at home to Bournemouth on Sunday - would assure Champions League football next season. It was typical of their misfiring season that they squandered this chance with a performance that was for the most part lifeless, only lifted above mediocrity by the brilliance of Martial. United may have been affected by that late arrival and the delayed kick-off, but their first 45

minutes fell well short of what was needed given how high the stakes were. It was only down to West Ham’s generosity in front of goal that Van Gaal’s side were only 1-0 down at the interval. And when, against the run of play and thanks to Martial’s excellence, they found themselves ahead with 18 minutes left they were still not good enough to make it count. The hosts finally took their chances and scored twice in four minutes to once again reveal the flaws in this fragile Manchester United side. First, Antonio rose high to power home Payet’s cross before Reid headed in another delivery from the Frenchman, though David de Gea got a strong hand to it and should have kept it out. There were disgraceful scenes outside Upton Park when the late arrival of Manchester United’s team bus was greeted by a mass of West Ham fans who threw bottles at the bus and caused damage. Inside, the old stadium staged one last hurrah that demonstrated the support and hostility that make it such a special arena - and showed why West Ham will find it almost impossible to recreate this potent combination at the Olympic Stadium. There were moving scenes before kick-off as a band played Abide With Me as the names and faces of West Ham’s departed greats flashed up on the big screens, with the greatest applause inevitably being reserved - at its conclusion for England World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore.
