oncerns have been raised over a rally planned by the opposition in the city to celebrate Madaraka Day next week. The worries were expressed at a meeting between religious leaders and commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as efforts to find a solution to the current standoff over the poll agency continued. The opposition Cord has been staging weekly protests across the country to force IEBC commissioners out of office saying they no longer have faith in them conducting next year’s general election. Those protests have however been met by fierce police force that saw three people shot dead last Monday. The clergy have been at the forefront in calling for dialogue over the matter. And envoys have also since joined the calls for leaders to sit down and resolve the stalemate. Although Cord yesterday announced that it will put on hold its weekly demonstrations to give dialogue a chance, the opposition also announced its intentions to hold a major rally at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park Grounds to celebrate Madaraka Day. We have already secured the venue from the Nairobi City County Government for us to celebrate civil liberties and freedoms to reaffirm the quest for constitutionalism in Kenya,” a letter from Cord secretariat to police notifying the security agencies read. And while religious leaders have welcomed the suspension of the protests, they have expressed reservations about the planned rally. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Religious leaders raise concerns over Cord’s Madaraka Day rally in Nairobi THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2016

“We are urging the opposition leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula to put the interests of this country first. We appeal to them to abandon their parallel Madaraka day celebrations for the sake of peace,” Bishop Mark Kariuki told reporters during a press conference after meeting with the IEBC commissioners at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi today. President Uhuru Kenyatta would normally lead the nation in celebrating the day Kenya achieved self-rule from Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. But since the head of state has opted to hold the celebrations in Nakuru, the opposition have found an opportunity for a parallel meeting in Nairobi. But the clergy are concerned that coming on the backdrop of tensed protests, the rally might turn into another street march. “We are telling the opposition to hold their horses on this matter and give dialogue a chance since they have chosen the right route,” Kariuki added.

Religious leaders led by Inter-Religious council chairman Adan Wachu (center) address the press at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi today where they expressed reservations with Cord’s plans to hold a rally at Uhuru Park next week.

On his part, Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Aden Wachu told the Cord leaders not only to suspend the planned Madaraka rally at Uhuru Park but also do to away with the street protests that have so far claimed three lives. Wachu said that the demonstrations

against the IEBC commissioners should not be a reason for any Kenyan to lose his or her life. “Even as we call for the opposition to reconsider their parallel Madaraka day, we want them to also call off the street protests for the sake of peace and reconciliation among Kenyans,”

Wachu said. “The Madaraka day may even disturb the peace and harmony being enjoyed by Kenyans, we want the opposition to take our word seriously,” he added. Wachu, who is also the Chairman of Inter-religious council explained that the national fabric and unity

of Kenyans should not be taken for granted and called on all leaders to respect each other for the sake of the country. “As religious leaders we want to call for respect among leaders be it in opposition or in government,” he said. @hillary_x254

Somalia’s president has called for “a better way” to bring home refugees from his country, with Kenya insisting that it will go ahead with the plan to close the world’s largest refugee camp. The Dadaab camp is home to more than 500,000 Somalis. President Hassan Sheik Mohamed told the BBC that forced repatriation was not in the best interests of either country. Kenya insists that it must close the camp over security concerns, saying attacks on its soil have been planned there.

Authorities needed to agree on “the best way to bring these people in an orderly manner and in a dignified way based on the international laws... We don’t want to have our relations affected with Kenya,” President Mohamed told the BBC Somali service. He said Somalia was grateful for Kenya’s support in accommodating the refugees over such a long period and was committed to getting its people home. Dadaab was set up in 1991 to house families fleeing conflict in Somalia, and some people have been living there for more than 20 years. But Kenya has over the last two years threatened to close the camp following deadly attacks by al-Shabaab terror group. A previous threat to close down the camp which was made in April last year following the deadly attack by al-Shabab on Garissa University College where 147 people were killed was never actualized. But this time, Kenya seems determined to have the camp closed and all refugees repatriated back to their country. At the World Humanitarian Summit in Turkey early this week, Deputy President William Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s position to the United Nations citing credible security concerns. But UN chief Ban Ki Moon pleaded with Kenya to reconsider its decision to close the Dadaab refugee camp. Mr Ki-Moon said the international community understands Kenya’s predicament but asked to be allowed to play its part in resolving the matter. “Any nation will face challenges but we need to see the humanitarian aspect of this, human rights and the international obligation we have,” said Mr Ban. He said voluntary return of refugees to a peaceful Somalia would be the best option as Kenya explores other ways of handling the issue.

Tunoi accuser was ICC witness Lawyer Katwa Kigen has refuted claims by Justice Phillip Tunoi’s main accuser, that he provided logistical means during the alleged exchange of Sh200 million between the judge and Governor Evans Kidero. In his sworn affidavit, Geoffrey Kiplagat alleges that Kigen was the one who drove the judge to Petro Petrol station located on Waiyaki way, where the alleged money exchanged hands. Kiplagat further alleges that they had series of meetings in a bid to secure the deal, which the lawyer says were only limited in him being Joshua arap Sang’s witness, whom Kigen was representing at the International Criminal Court. “We met in several places and he would normally walk in my office whether with an appointment or without,” he stated. Kiplagat used to work at the same media house as Sang. Kigen explained that besides the interactions with Kiplagat as Sang’s witness, they have never discussed Justice Tunoi or even the Nairobi Governor. He however admitted that he knows Mike Njeru, one of Governor Kidero’s friend and a witness at the tribunal, who was introduced to him by a client he was drafting a partnership deal for between 2007 and 2008. The deal, Kigen said did not however materialise. Kiplagat claims that on Wednesday August 27, 2014, he received a call

Geoffrey Kiplagat who accused Justice Tunoi of having received a bribe. Lawyer Katwa Kigen yestetrday told the tribunal probing the claims that he was an ICC witness.

from Kigen, asking him to meet him in Pasara Restaurant located at Lonrho house. “I don’t recall calling him, but I met him on the 19th of August 2014 and on that occasion I obtained a statement from him and an affidavit for purposes of the ICC proceedings,” he explained. “Unfortunately, he signed the affidavit without a date… from the 20th of August (2014) I was looking

for him for purposes of concurring on placing a date on the affidavit so that it can be complete.” It is during the alleged meeting that Kiplagat claims that the lawyer wanted to know whether he knew businessman Njeru and “whether we could converge there, that night for the ‘big meeting’. Kigen’s response was that, “it is completely untrue. I have never discussed with him about Mr

Njeru.” It is at this point that Kigen allegedly called Justice Tunoi, who asked him (Kigen), “to work with you (Kiplagat) in expediting everything.” The tribunal will resume sitting on Tuesday next week but a court ruling this Friday on whether Tunoi should have retired at the age of 70 could render it redundant. NTSA launches new driving curriculum A new driving school curriculum aimed at reducing road carnage on Kenyan roads has been introduced. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched the curriculum for training and testing of drivers and instructors yesterday in a move it has described as long overdue and a new milestone in the effort to curb road fatalities. Speaking during the launch yesterday, NTSA Director General Francis Mejja (pictured below) said the new system would bring “order and sanity that has been missing on our roads.” “The curriculum will give learners proper knowledge, skills and attitude required to develop necessary competencies and discipline,” Mejja said. The new curriculum will require drivers to undergo refresher courses. The curriculum will also ensure training for a segment of drivers who have not undergone training such as truck driving. Mejja also said that there was an urgent need to “professionalise” the country‘s driving industry. Also present at the launch was NTSA Chairperson Lee Kinyanjui who heralded the new system which comes into effect in December this year. “What this simply says is that because we have already established that accidents emanate

from human error, we must do something to re-engineer and reorganize how we train our drivers,” Kinyanjui said. “Today is part of that process of ensuring the drivers we have will help us turn around these numbers,” he added. The new curriculum also provides for training and testing of motorcycles, light vehicles, PSVs and commercial vehicles. All driving schools across the country will also be required to teach harmonised driving lessons to ensure uniformity. Traffic police will also be subjected to the retraining to monitor roads more effectively. Transport Cabinet Secretary welcomed the new curriculum saying it marked a new chapter

on road safety in Kenya. “Now that we have a formal curriculum, we want to focus on implementation,” Macharia said. “We would like to make sure going forward of the impact of the new curriculum with figures from the NTSA”. Macharia also noted that this is Kenya’s first standardized program training since its independence. It is estimated that road carnages kill over 3000 people annually with statistics from NTSA showing that 3932 people died in the first three months alone as a result of accidents in 2016. Most of the accidents have been attributed to human error and unroadworthy vehicles.

EACC reveals massive looting in public schools An audit report released has revealed massive flaws and embezzlement of funds in the Free Primary Education programme for primary schools. The report released yesterday by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) shows how primary school heads misappropriated money allocated to their schools. The results have established that some school heads borrow huge sums of money from the education kitty. In one instances, a head teacher allocated himself as much as Sh 100,000 having no intention of paying the money back until he was compelled to do so by the school’s committee. Speaking during the release of the report, EACC CEO Halakhe Waqo pointed out that the school heads exploited various loopholes in the programme to misappropriate the billions of shillings allocated to their institutions. The institutions’ management committees also used the funds on irregular activities such as overseas trips. The committees also inflate their enrolment records in order to attract more funds for which they divert for their personal gain. The report titled ‘Examination Into the Systems, Policies, Procedures and Practices Used in the Disbursement and Utilisation of Free Primary Education (FPE) Funds’ was handed over to the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development. “Our investigations revealed that most primary schools had bought more story books than required. This we realised was a scheme by book retailers to move dead stock to schools, books which the schools may not have needed,” Waqo said. The report shows that schools falsify payments for undelivered goods with others forging the signatures of board members to fraudulently access money through irregular procurement of books and other materials. The management committees are also in on the scandal with some members warding themselves soft loans including parents who sit on the committees. The school heads also produce documents of non-existent projects and present them as complete projects. They also use unofficial cheque books to which they inflate cheque figures. Waqo recommended the prosecution of such school heads implicated in the saga. “The best lesson for such people is to prosecute and take them to court to be charged the way thieves are threatened,” he added. Matiangi decried the wastage of funds as depicted in the report saying he has had a firsthand experience of the misappropriation during his numerous impromptu visits to the schools. “We cannot spend resources this way and hope to succeed as a country. Where we put about Sh 7 billion in the purchase of learning materials and when you go to the schools the learning material are not there,” Matiangi said. The report also shows that in most cases the FPE money was kept in cash while the schools lacked cash safes and adequate security exposing it to theft and embezzlement. The Free Primary Education programme was launched in 2003 as part of the Narc government’s campaign promises with the aim of enabling millions of pupils attend primary school for free. Since then, more than Sh100 billion has been pumped into the programme. @harrison_x254

Alert warning issued as police foil terror plots by IS-linked suspects in Nairobi Police have announced the arrest of two terror suspects linked to the ISIS network who were planning major attacks in Nairobi and Mombasa. Kiguzo Mwangolo Mgutu and Abubakar Jillo Mohamed (both pictured right) are said to have been radicalized at Kangemi Mosque and were recruited by their leader Mohamed Abdi Ali, a medical student, who was arrested earlier this month along with two others for allegedly planning an anthrax attack. They have not yet been charged. Police Spokesman George Kinoti said it is Ali who led them to the two, following his arrest. “Following Mohamed Abdi Ali’s arrest, members of his network have been planning retaliatory attacks using home-made explosives. The arrest of the two has foiled terror attacks with explosives and other weapons that were planned for Nairobi and Mombasa,” Kinoti said in a statement. Police said they recovered various materials that were to be used to manufacture an IED at Mgutu’s residence in Kangemi. Materials seized during their arrest include nails,

ball bearings, batteries, electrical wire, fertilizer, cell phones and other suspected explosive substances which have been taken for forensic analysis. Intelligence reports have shown that the two suspects were authors of an online document that declared their allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. “From our initial investigations, it has been established that Kiguzo Mwangolo Mgutu and Abubakar Jillo Mohamed are amongst authors of the document that have been circulating online purporting the establishment of Jahba East Africa in which they declared their allegiance to the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,” the police spokesman said. He said the suspects had planned to escape from the country to Syria and Libya after carrying out the attacks in which they intended to target innocent Kenyans using public transportation. Although not giving their age, the police spokesman said the youths were “making these plans without their parent’s knowledge.” The public has been urged to be extra vigilant,

particularly while using public transport which is the main target for the terrorists. Kinoti said police surveillance had been heightened following attempts by Al Shabaab to infiltrate Kenya through Lacta belt in Somalia.

“We have over the last two months arrested eight Tanzanians who confessed to have been on their way to join the Al Shabaab terror network.”

Reports slams Clinton private email use THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2016

A State Department Inspector General report said former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton failed to follow the rules or inform key department staff regarding her use of a private email server, according to a copy of the report obtained by CNN on Wednesday. The report, which was provided to lawmakers, states, “At a minimum, Secretary Clinton should have surrendered all emails dealing with Department business before leaving government service and, because she did not do so, she did not comply with the Department’s policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act.” The report examined record keeping laws, policies and practices at the State Department from 1997 to present. In producing the report, the Inspector General’s office interviewed former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice. Clinton and several of her staff members during her tenure declined to be interviewed, the report said. The report draws attention to two staff members in the Office of Information Resources Management, who back in 2010 “discussed their concerns about Secretary Clinton’s use of a personal email account in separate meetings with the then-Director” of their office. The report says, “According to the staff member, the Director stated that the Secretary’s personal system had been reviewed and approved by Department legal staff and that the matter was not to be discussed any further.” The same director reportedly “instructed the staff never to speak of the Secretary’s personal email system again.” But the report notes that interviews with officials from the Under Secretary for Management and the Office of the Legal Adviser found “no knowledge of approval or review by other Department

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nomination candidate in the 2016 election. A report from State Department Inspector General said the former Secretary of State failed to follow the rules or inform key department staff regarding her use of a private email when she was in office.

staff ” of the server. Clinton has long maintained that she had permission to use personal email. She told CNN’s in July that “the truth is everything I did was permitted and I went above and beyond what anybody could have expected in making sure that if the State Department didn’t capture something, I made a real effort to get it to them.” But the report says that the Inspector General’s office “found no evidence that the Secretary requested or obtained guidance or approval to conduct official business via a personal email account on her private server.” In a statement following the report’s release, Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon, wrote that “While political opponents of Hillary Clinton are sure to misrepresent this report for their own partisan purposes, in reality, the Inspector General documents just

how consistent her email practices were with those of other Secretaries and senior officials at the State Department who also used personal email.” But while the report acknowledges personal email use by previous secretaries, it also notes that the rules for preserving work emails sent from a personal email account were updated in 2009, the year Clinton took office. The National Archives and Records Administration regulation, according to the report, says that “Agencies that allow employees to send and receive official electronic mail messages using a system not operated by the agency must ensure that Federal records sent or received on such systems are preserved in the appropriate agency record keeping system.” Fallon said that “at the time that she took office and for the duration of her tenure there, the use of personal email

for work purposes was not disallowed.” He attributed issues with retention of emails to “shoddy” record keeping at the State Department. When asked why Clinton did not accept the inspector general’s request to be interviewed, Fallon said that Clinton had prioritized the Justice Department’s investigation into the email server. “We never could quite make sense of why this review by the State Department IG was proceeding on its own timeline in a parallel fashion to the Justice Department review,” he said. Fallon also said the inspector general’s office may have exhibited an “antiClinton bias.” “There were questions raised about this office during the course of its investigation; there were reports about individuals in this office coming forward and suggesting there were hints of an anti-Clinton bias inside that

office,” he said. The department’s inspector general was appointed by the Obama administration. State Department spokesman Mark Toner briefed reporters Wednesday: “While not necessarily encouraged, there was no prohibition on using personal email. The only requirement is that -- and the regulations do state this, that these records need to be preserved.” Department officials told reporters on a conference call that Secretary of State John Kerry had asked the inspector general to undertake this review in March 2015. The officials said that the department had already decided to accept all eight of the recommendations made in the report. This is not the first time Clinton’s use of a private email has been criticized by an inspector general. In January the inspector general for intelligence agencies wrote a letter to Congress saying that two government agencies flagged emails on Clinton’s server as containing classified information, the inspector general said, including some on “special access programs,” which are a subset of the highest “Top Secret” level of classification, but are under subject to more stringent control rules than even other Top Secret information.” At the time a Clinton campaign spokesman alleged that the Inspector General for intelligence agencies had been intentionally leaking seemingly damaging information in collusion with Senate Republicans. Clinton’s campaign and the State Department have long denied that any information was handled improperly, saying that the information and emails in question were all retroactively classified.

National Bank profits fall by Sh154m as board struggles to propel lender

National Bank profits for the period ended March 2016 have fallen by Sh154 million. According to National Bank’s latest report, the lender’s unaudited profit after tax and exceptional items fell to Sh324.3 million from Sh478.5 million during the same period the previous year. The lender has, however, posted a total interest income of Sh3.52 billion for the period ended March 2016, up from Sh3.08 billion a year ago. The announcement comes just as the bank’s Board of Directors is in plans to propel it back to Top Tier status. It also comes ahead of the bank’s 47th Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for June 3, 2016. The AGM will, among other things, serve as a platform to elect Directors. This, said the board, is in accordance with Article 90 of the Company’s Articles of Association, which stipulates that the Managing Trustee, National Social Security Fund retires by rotation as a Director and being eligible offers himself for re-election. 10,000 Uber drivers to benefit from Sh10 billion Sidian Bank loan

More than 10,000 Uber drivers in Kenya are set to benefit from a Sh10 billion kitty from Sidian Bank. The amount, according to Sidian Bank Chief Executive Officer Titus Karanja, will enable Uber drivers purchase their own cars valued at between Sh1 million and Sh 1.5 million. “The deal is all about seeking to ensure every Uber driver not only drives but owns his /her own car,” said Karanja. However, the facility is targeting drivers who do not own cars thus they will be given first priority. Karanja said the partnership agreement is indicative of the lender’s commitments in supporting smaller, start-up enterprises. Other than financial support, the deal will also see Sidian Bank offering technical support to Uber drivers. “We are glad to be part of the deal which is enabling smaller enterprises to grow. We will also be providing technical assistance to the beneficiaries as we consolidate our new positioning focused

on enabling individuals own their future,” he said. Nate Anderson, Acting General Manager for Uber in Kenya has called upon other taxi drivers within the country to join Uber and enjoy the offer since the sector is getting more financial support from stakeholders across the globe. “I call upon those taxi drivers who have not registered with the taxihailing app to do so, enjoy the benefits their counterparts are enjoying to help them thrive economically,” he said. “The programme follows a similar offer recently unveiled by Uber in partnership with Wes Bank. I believe more sponsors will be joining us in this journey,” Anderson added. He said the partnership will not only enable clients to afford reliable high quality vehicles, but also support the government’s goal of job creation among the youth. “We are seeking to build an even more sustainable ride-sharing network in Kenya,” said Anderson. @enock_x254

increased demand for credit from households and businesses. However, a recent survey by the Central Bank of Kenya showed that a number of lenders are wary of the Government’s cash constraints, instability in the forex market and high interest rates, arguing that these factors could trigger mass defaults in the sector. The uncertainty about speedy economic recovery also saw many banks reduce their expansion drives. However, National Bank has achieved a relatively positive growth in the last one year. Through its transformation

strategy, the Board seeks to regain the Bank’s glory and propel it back to the top tier banks by growing its balance sheet, expanding its market footprint, managing risks and streamlining costs. “The bank has continued with a rebranding exercise which is revamping our retail outlets look and feel which will lend itself to more efficient service delivery. Increased energy production will fuel creation of jobs: Kenyatta Kenya’s recent move to increase energy production as a driver of industrialization will create employment for the youth, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said. Speaking in Lusaka, Zambia, during a debate on ‘The path to universal access to energy in Africa by 2025’ which was part of the AfDB annual meetings, the Head of State argued that Africa’s energy gaps will be bridged through practical solutions and not theories. “We decided that the energy sector will operate on a commercially based manner where we bring private sector initiatives into the industry,” he said. “Our greatest challenge is to create jobs for the youth. But we are not going to create jobs if we do not industrialize. And we are not going to industrialize if we do not have power,” Kenyatta added. In recent years, Kenya has focused on increasing energy production through alternative ‘green’ energy initiatives seeking to bank on geothermal and wind energy. Speaking on Tuesday, the President cited Kenya’s ambitious electricity initiative dubbed “Last Mile Connectivity” as an example of a practical project that will help the country achieve 70 percent connectivity rate by December 2017. The project is jointly funded by the Kenya Government and the African Development Bank (AfDB). President Kenyatta said with only 16 percent of Africans connected to power, a huge potential exists for investment in the energy sector.

Management has been battling to return to profit since it fired its previous CEO in June last year for “gross misconduct” and launched an audit into where cash from a rights issue had gone. The company is also selling assets to pay down debts and is seeking an emergency loan from the government, which holds a 15 per cent stake. Uchumi secured shareholder approval in January to sell new shares worth up to Sh5 billion to help turn the

firm around and appointed Kenya’s Pamoja Capital to lead the search for a potential investor. The company’s current market value is Sh1.42 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. “There are many suitors so the board is still evaluating and discussing,” Kipng’etich said. Earlier this week, suppliers of Uchumi Supermarkets agreed to resume stocking the retailer. The firm, which is Kenya’s only publicly traded retailer, was placed into receivership in 2006 due in part to debts amounting to Sh2.2 billion, of which Sh957 million was owed to lenders, KCB and PTA Bank. The receivership ended on March 4, 2010 after most of the company’s debts were cleared and others converted into shares. The company resumed trading on the Nairobi Securities Exchange on May 31, 2011.

Uchumi now owes creditors a total of Sh3.6 billion. In recent months, the company has closed down almost half its stores to cut costs. Following a meeting between management and government officials last Friday, suppliers agreed to convert half of the company’s debt into equity and to channel future payments through a jointly managed escrow account. Meanwhile, Jamii bora Bank Ltd., Uchumi’s biggest shareholder, offered suppliers invoice discounting, or short-term loans based on purchase orders from the retailer. “That has been sorted out so now we know that Uchumi will fly again,” said Jamii Bora CEO Samuel Kimani. The Bank owns a 15.2 per cent stake in Uchumi. “The revival of Uchumi is very important. It means the value of the shares should go up,” Kimani added.

Superior Homes stresses on need for affordable housing

Real estate company Superior Homes Kenya Ltd, the developer of Greenpark estate in Athi River, has announced plans to venture into the tourism industry as it expands its footprint in the Kenyan property market. Plans are currently underway to launch the construction of a 50-room luxury hotel dubbed Elementaita Mountain Lodge in June 2016. The move will see the company tap into the tourism sector, the country’s second largest source of foreign exchange revenue, Superior Homes Managing Director Ian Henderson has confirmed. “The lodge is targeted at the domestic market which is consistent considering the fluctuation in the tourism market. Our idea is to create a getaway for Kenyans for the weekend,” said Mr. Henderson. Henderson was speaking during a media briefing at Greenpark estate in Athi River. “Kenya’s property market is steady and on an upward trend. The industry is driven by Kenya’s growing middle class with demand for value and developers must keep in mind the changing needs of customers and stay ahead of the game,” he explained. He noted an increasing need to develop affordable housing for the emerging middle class that would range between Sh6 million to Sh10 million. “Kenya is slightly up and down, the market regulates itself fairly well. Sometimes it is difficult to sell because of varied reasons like fluctuating interest rates but the market is fairly steady. I don’t think there is a bubble,” he explained. In September 2015 the company launched the ‘BOLT’ (Buy over Long Term). This model was conceptualized to give prospective buyers an opportunity to purchase a house in Greenpark over one to three years on pre-agreed fixed monthly deposits. The BOLT concept is unique as customers are able to buy houses at fixed prices over the agreed period without having to take up bank mortgages.

BOLT is good news especially for people in business as installment plans can be tailored to suit the cash flow of the buyer. “The uptake of the BOLT product has been very positive in the market. We currently have 9 buyers under this program for the purchase of various house models in Greepark Estate,” Mr. Henderson said. “This is about 70 per cent of the venture and we anticipate the remaining 200 units to be complete by 2020 while a modern all-inclusive shopping

complex is set to be completed by 2017,” said Henderson. “The future of the property market looks bright since it is aspirational and the gap for sufficient housing is yet to be fulfilled,” Henderson noted, refuting consistent assertions that the Kenyan property market could soon experience a bubble burst. The Greenpark project is a 163-acre housing development launched in 2004 and has since completed 450 houses in five clusters.

Making it the most robust money platform in the region. In his keynote address during the awards ceremony, the Central Bank of Kenya Chairman Jairus

Mohammed Nyaoga noted that the East Africa region was leading in the banking sector in many ways. “It is in Kenya that we first experienced mobile banking and it is here that it continues to rule the world from. In East Africa innovations such as agency banking are bringing banking service to the most remote regions and to our citizens that need them. This phenomenon has taken financial inclusion in our region to new heights.” According to a CAK report of 2015, mobile money transfer subscriptions were recorded at 26.7 million whereas the number of active mobile money transfer agents stood at 141,542. Mobile commerce recorded a total of 138.6 million transactions with 275.8 billion shillings being used to pay for goods and services. Nairobi has been ranked sixth in a list of Africa’s top 10 fastest growing cities, though experts warn that infrastructure is failing to keep up with urbanisation. Lagos, Nigeria was ranked first followed by Kinshasa in DRC, Cairo in Egypt, Luanda in Angola and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, sounding up the top five. Overcrowding, increased traffic jams and poor urban development are some of the problems Nairobi residents are likely to face in the coming years, if the government does not intervene. Nairobi, and Africa’s urbanisation has been driven by organic population growth, the natural expansion of population due to the surplus of births over deaths, a phenomenon driven, in Africa’s case, by persistently high fertility rates. Urbanisation has equally been driven by in-migration.

Smartphone market expands as internet adoption reaches record highs: Jumia THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2016

Kenya’s online retailer, Jumia has launched its second White Paper on mobile trends. The Paper examines mobile trends across Africa and Kenya. In particular, it looks at how mobile penetration, massive growth of internet connectivity and e-commerce have converged to change consumer behaviour and retail in Kenya. At the end of 2015, there were 3.258 billion smartphones in circulation around the world. The launch of the Jumia White Paper coincides with a week-long sale between May 30 and June 3, with huge discounts on mobile phones, in partnership with manufacturers; Infinix, Tecno, Wiko, X-Tigi and Innjoo. Customers who purchase mobile handsets during the sale will enjoy up to 50 per cent discounts, countrywide delivery and the option to pay on delivery and a flexible return and exchange policy of 7 days. The smartphone penetration rate is still growing strongly but has progressively slowed down from +65 per cent in 2012, to +27 per cent in 2013 and eventually to +23 per cent in 2014. It is expected to reach 5.808 billion by 2020. Smartphone adoption is higher in the developed world at 65 per cent in 2015 and projected to grow to 76 per cent by 2020. However, the progression in the developing world is faster with an increase of 23 points from 40 per cent in 2015 to 63 per cent in 2020. By 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa should reach a total of 540 million smartphones from 380 million at the end of 2015.

Parinaz Firozi, MD Jumia Kenya said, “Kenya’s digital landscape proves beyond doubts that the time is ripe to make mobile the first priority in every business strategy.” The appetite of Africans for e-commerce is growing steadily as Jumia has become the 3rd most visited website in Ivory Coast and Kenya

how, LG has lately developed an infrastructure involving its products that provides sustainable, reliable, and affordable access to modern energy services that could not only improve the economic status of people, communities, and countries, but also significantly improve their quality of life and standards of living. New data has found that over the years, limited access to renewable, affordable and reliable energy has made increasing productivity and promotion of economic growth more challenging. While significant strides have been made in boosting energy efficiency, promising work is also being done to ensure that global energy reserves are expanded to include more environmentally friendly sources. This is highlighted as a key measure in realization of global goals for sustainable development (SDGs). LG Thermal V line is one way LG is addressing today and tomorrow’s biggest environmental challenges. Thermal V is LG’s newest Air to Water Heat Pump system, especially designed for new housing and renovation by LG’s advanced heating

technology with energy saving. Thermal V as passed the global test as the best solution for home heating and hot water supply with LG’s inverter technology. It is four times more energy efficient than boiler system by absorbing energy from the outdoor environment. Thermal V extracts heat from the surrounding air to reduce power consumption, slashing energy bills while simultaneously reducing its effect on the environment. It does this by relying up to 75 per cent of its energy needs. The eco-friendly technology powering the thermal V line up is both affordable and easily installed helping home owners transition from older, inefficient technology to green climate control solutions. Already, the European Union has recognized the value of Air –to-Water heat pumps, offering subsidies to encourage households across Europe to adopt the technology. Technology such as thermal V will eventually ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, efficient and modern energy for all hence ensuring sustainability. @kevin_x254

Kenya being a developing country depends on foreign aid during disasters, entry into the RC100 would put the city in a better position to handle such occurrences when they happen. Basic urban infrastructure such as clean water, waste management disposal, drainage systems and informal settlements are also issues that need to be addressed. But modern cities have problems that are not so direct to address. One issue that might be facing one part of the city might not be a problem in another. Ephemeral is designed to break down after a year and the treatment is followed by a removal solution @christine_x254

Temporary tattoos are always a great thing if you wanted to get some ink but don’t want to deal with the commitment. But this new method of imparting ink into the skin by a New York startup known as Ephemeral could be the solution to getting a professionally done tattoo, which does not look like sticker and won’t last forever. Tattoos are permanent because ink molecules are too big to be flushed out by our bodies even though they can fade over time. Ephemeral CEO Seung Shin, says that the way this new process works is by using a dye with a smaller molecular make-up, “our tattoo ink is based on small dye molecules that are

aren’tnt… thatm ne per a located inside of a bigger molecule.” Which ae easier to expel from the body. Ephemeral is designed to break down after a year and the treatment is followed by a removal solution. Unlike permanent ink which can only be removed by laser removal which is expensive, involves multiple sessions and leaves scars. Pricing has been estimated to be between $50 (Sh. 1000) and $100 (Sh.10000). Your tattoo might look awesome now and be relevant right at this moment but that might change 5 years from now. If you decide to get a tattoo as a spur-of-the moment thing, this one might be the one for you.

Harambee Stars friendly clash with Sudan pushed to Tuesday as visitors fail to arrive THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2016

The international friendly pitting Harambee Stars and Sudan has been postponed to Tuesday next week on request of the Sudanese Football Association. The match was scheduled for Friday at the Nyayo National Stadium but had to be moved forward after Sudan failed to arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday night, one day before the build-up match. “It is true the Sudan F.A has requested that the match be moved to Tuesday, May 31 2016 as the earliest they can arrive in Nairobi is tomorrow (Friday),” Football Kenya Federation CEO Robert Muthomi announced. Sudan alongside their junior under-20 side, who will play their Kenyan counterparts, are set to arrive Friday at 6:30am. The Federation announced the Tanzania friendly will be on as scheduled on Sunday with the Taifa Stars expected to arrive Friday. Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi has named a formidable provisional squad that mostly include local based players as he aims to scout potential players who will feature in the qualifiers. Among the players called up are Spanish-born Kenyan striker Ismail Gonzalez and rising Australia A-League star Bruce Kamau. Gonzalez, born of a Spanish mother and a Kenyan father, is eager to earn his first cap after joining training camp at Kasarani stadium on Monday. “I think it is important that we have a look at all players available, including the two. Talks with Gonzalez have been very positive and he is here with us, let’s see how he will perform,” Okumbi stated. Okumbi will use both friendlies to prepare for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier where they host Congo June 4 in Nairobi for the return leg, after forcing a 1-1 draw in Brazzaville when the two sides meet in June 2015. Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the Gabon continental showpiece are slim after failing to win a match in four games to trail Group E on one point with only two fixtures to go.

Ranieri’s winning run ends at the Monaco Grand prix THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2016

Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso enjoys the moment after scoring for his side against an All Stars team coached by Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri (Right). The Formula One side won 3-1.

He’s the man who guided unfashionable Leicester City to a stunning English Premier League title, but Claudio Ranieri couldn’t inspire an All Stars team to victory over a Formula One side in Monaco. Ranieri steered the celebrity XI in the annual charity soccer match that precedes the weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. The Italian last tasted defeat when his Leicester team lost a dramatic game at Arsenal back in February. But his temporary charges proved no match for a team including double F1 world champion Fernando Alonso -- who scored a memorable free-kick -- Spanish Grand Prix

winner Max Verstappen and Williams star Felipe Massa, who ran out 3-1 winners. A delighted Alonso tweeted a link to footage of the free-kick, which he sent soaring into the top corner of the net. The game, which raised funds for underprivileged children and was the 24th in an annual charity series, saw Ranieri return to Monaco’s Stade Louis II, where he was manager between 2012 and 2014. Despite boasting Prince Albert II, the principality’s reigning monarch, in his ranks, the Italian was unable to transfer his Leicester stardust to his Monaco men. Monaco’s Grand Prix, long seen as the most

fashionable and glamorous race on the F1 circuit, takes place Sunday. And 18-year-old Red Bull driver Verstappen will be the center of attention after his heroics in Spain made him F1’s youngest-ever Grand Prix winner. The teenager’s triumph in Spain capped a meteoric rise that saw him make his F1 debut with Toro Rosso at the age of 17 -before he could legally drive a road car in the Netherlands -- and then earn a promotion to sister team Red Bull just 10 days before the Spanish race. All that -- and it turns out he can play football, too.

Hamilton: No tension with Rosberg

Triple world champion Lewis Hamilton says he feels no tension towards Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg despite their crash in Spain. “It’s fine,” said the Briton. “In the past, there would have been tension, but there was just pure respect.” Rosberg leads the championship with 100 points after winning four of the first five races, with Hamilton 43 points adrift of the German in third place. The sixth race of the season takes place in Monaco on Sunday. Hamilton and Rosberg crashed out of the last race in Barcelona after colliding with each other on the first lap. They have clashed several times in their Formula 1 careers, but the reigning world champion insists there is no lingering bad feeling on this occasion. Asked why it was different now, he said: “It is always good to discuss things. As a team we did in Barcelona and then at the factory individually. “Then Nico and I spoke just now. I didn’t feel we had to, because there is no issue. We just move on. There is nothing you can do about the past. “We didn’t talk through the incident. We know what happened.” Hamilton added: “We are not like the more

Arsenal sign new midfielder

Arsenal have signed Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach. The 23-year-old, who has won 41 international caps and captained the German club, joins for a reported £35m on a long-term contract. “I’m very proud to be joining Arsenal,” said Xhaka. “I cannot wait to move to London, represent this special club and play in the Premier League. “I will give everything to help Arsenal win trophies and make the fans happy.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “Granit Xhaka is an exciting young player, already with good Champions League and Bundesliga experience. “We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad.” Xhaka, who scored six goals in 108 Bundesliga appearances, will join up with his new team-mates after Euro 2016, which runs from 10 June to 10 July. The former Basel player is Arsenal’s first signing since the end of a season in which they finished runners-up to Premier League champions Leicester. Experienced midfielders Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini are set to leave Emirates Stadium this summer.

emotional beings on the planet who talk about things, we don’t do that. “We arrived very cool and chilled and spoke. All we need to know is the respect is still there and we are going to keep racing. And that’s all we had to say. “We have a long career left with racing with another. There are going to be lots of close encounters and we are just going to try our best.” Rosberg refused to say whether he and Hamilton had discussed the incident.

“If we have spoken or not, that needs to be kept internal,” he said. “It is a thing of the past now. I am going to take the same approach as always and do what’s necessary to try to win this grand prix.” Hamilton has not won a race since he clinched the title at the US Grand Prix last October but is chasing a victory this weekend. “If it happens, it happens,” he said. “If it doesn’t, there will be many more opportunities. There are still 16 races. The glass, rather than it being half full, is 10% full. And there is still the rest of that to fill up.”

Andy King believes he can replicate his Leicester City fairytale and win Euro 2016 with Wales. King, 27, played in 25 games on the way to helping the Foxes win the Premier League and is confident of a Gareth Baleinspired Wales’ chances in France. “We’ve got the best player in the tournament so why can’t we win it,” he told BBC Wales Sport. “They said we [Leicester] couldn’t win the league at the start of the season so that’s given us a bit of belief.” The midfielder is currently with Wales in a pre-tournament training camp in Portugal. He has made 32 appearances for Wales since making his debut in 2009, and believes that Bale gives their side the edge over every other team in the tournament. “If you want to name me another that might be better than him then go for it,” he said. “The way he can win a game on his own is something that not many players have the capability of doing.”

Image rights complicate Mourinho deal THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2016

Negotiations over Jose Mourinho’s image rights are delaying him becoming the new Manchester United manager. Mourinho is expected to replace sacked Louis van Gaal, with talks ongoing between his agent Jorge Mendes and United officials. But it has emerged that Chelsea still own the ‘Jose Mourinho’ name as a trademark, meaning United may need to pay a six-figure sum for the rights. However, the issue will not scupper any deal, which is expected this week. Discussions will now enter a third day, despite the deal to bring the 53-yearold former Chelsea boss to Old Trafford being largely complete. On Wednesday, Mourinho told waiting reporters at his home in London that he was going to Portugal. Chelsea registered both the name Jose Mourinho and his signature as a European trademark in 2005, meaning they can use it to sell merchandise such as toiletries, technology, clothing and jewellery. Sports lawyer Carol Couse told BBC Sport it was “really unusual” for an individual not to own the trademark to their own name. “Chelsea could be earning revenue every time someone uses Mourinho’s name. It could prevent United from exploiting his signature,” said Couse, of law firm Mills & Reeve. “One of the things United will

be looking to acquire is not only Mourinho’s image but also his name. “If United had a brand of Mourinho clothing it would be in breach of the trademark Chelsea currently own.” With these technicalities delaying the deal, talks have centered around four possibilities. One is United do not use Mourinho’s name against the exhaustive list of items that Chelsea have registered - from umbrellas to

watch straps, lingerie and talcum powders or it asks the Portuguese trainer to buy the trademark back. Similarly, United can pay Chelsea for a licence so they can use Mourinho’s name on club merchandise or challenge trademark if they can prove it has not been used by Chelsea “That would be pretty costly,” said Couse, who estimated the fee for a licence as “hundreds of thousands of

pounds”. “Look at the value of the deals that have been done for Mourinho to date. What would be the value of a Jose Mourinho watch? “He has managed Inter and Real since then. They have either acquired the rights from Chelsea or managed the use of his name. “If Chelsea didn’t grant a licence, every time United used Jose Mourinho’s name in a commercial capacity against

those products, Chelsea could sue Manchester United. I would suspect United would rather just pay a licence fee,” he added. There is also potential conflict between Mourinho’s personal deals - such as his one with car manufacturer Jaguar - and United’s shirt sponsor agreement with Chevrolet.

Unstoppable Gor now top League

Champions Gor Mahia signed off their final match of the first leg of the season in style by beating struggling Sofapaka 2-0 in a mid-week SportPesa Premier League match played at Kisumu’s Moi Stadium last evening. The win saw K’Ogalo, who collected their sixth successive win go top of the log for the first time this season after their eternal rivals AFC Leopards did them a favour by holding leaders Tusker FC to a 2-2 draw in Machakos. Ugandan midfielder Khalid Aucho (pictured above) and Captain Musa Mohammed were on target in the first half to see the three-peat champions finish the opening leg on 29 points ahead of the month long break. On the other hand, the result compounded relegation woes on 2009 champions Sofapaka, who have gone five matches without a win to languish at the bottom of the standings on seven points. Entering the clash, Gor head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira maintained the winning squad that blew apart Mathare United 2-0 while Batoto Ba Mungu missed the services of Fred Kentille and Josephat Oyugi who were out injured. Gor Mahia made their intentions known early when Aucho nodded home the opener six minutes after kick-off from his rebound that had dazzled the Sofapaka defence. The goal motivated Gor to surge forward and they could have doubled the lead in the 20th minute, but Jaswel Njuguna cleared the danger off the line from Karim Nizigiyimana’s delivery. Sofapaka responded with their first shot on target through Ken Maritim’s thunderbolt, only to see the effort thwarted by Gor custodian Boniface Oluoch, who was alert to parry over. At the half hour mark, Aucho had a chance to

notch his brace but wasted the glorious opportunity when he feebly shot wide after Godfrey Walusimbi had danced past three defenders to set him up. Ferreira made his first substitution, withdrawing Nizigiyimana for Luke Ochieng and it didn’t take long before his charges found the second when defender Musa Mohammed side-footed home from a short corner taken by Walusimbi and Innocent Wafula. Batoto Ba Mungu strived hard to pull a second half comeback but that only remained to be a dream despite Collins Omondi rattling the cross bar before Wycliffe Opondo threatened with a long range screamer that Oluoch saved. In Machakos, Tusker twice came from behind to earn a point against AFC Leopards. Youngster Alfred Wekesa broke the deadlock with a calm finish after beating Tusker defender Lloyd Wahome to pick up a through pass from Kepha Aswani. But the brewers equalized from the spot after Ramadhan Yakub handled in the box on 64 minutes. The match seemed destined for a one all draw until Allan Katterega netted what looked like a winner with two minutes to go only for Ekaliani Ndolo to score a stoppage time leveler. Today, Muhoroni Youth will host neighbours Chemelil Suga in Muhoroni while Western Stima host Ushuru in Kisumu. Sony Sugar are at home to City Stars in Awendo while Bandari host Thika United at the Mbaraki stadium in Mombasa. Other matches will see Ulinzi Stars take on Homeboyz in Nakuru as Posta Rangers host Mathare United in Machakos before the league takes a month long break to pave way for the June transfer window. www.capitalfm.co.ke
