IEBC to set up new election data centre six months before polls

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will set up a new election data centre six months to the General Election. The electoral body said the new centre is part of the far-reaching changes it is putting in place to deliver a credible polls in 2017. IEBC chairman Issack Hassan also said some of the issues raised by the Opposition on the next polls are also being addressed by the commission. “The whole IT department has been restructured as part of wide ranging institutional reform and capacity building. A new data centre is being set up to deal with any failure among other technology upgrades, which will be tested for stress, readiness and resilience at least six months before elections. We will bring on board all stakeholders to ascertain the functionality and efficiency of the technology,” he said. “It is upon all stakeholders, Cord included to seek information from the commission instead of being fed by propaganda out there,” Hassan added. Hassan maintained the Biometric Voter Registration kits did not fail in the last elections and accused the media for feeding the public with wrong information. “There have been claims that the Biometric Voter registration (BVR) kits failed in 2013. Let me make it clear. BVR kits have never failed in this country. The gadgets that failed were the Electronic Voter Identification (EVID) kits. They only failed in 2013 because they were either not charged properly, they got to polling stations late, or because the staff was not trained properly. But we have been using them in by-elections,” he said. “Concerns have also been raised about the technology that failed in the last elections. Yes, we are doing something about it,” added Hassan. department said more changes have been made within the department to ensure the mistake of the 2013 election does not recur in 2017. “We have already overhauled the whole department and made changes, things will work out as planned that I can assure you,” he

said. Hassan said the postmortem of the last election revealed certain logistical and legal challenges to the smooth administration of the election which the commission has addressed through spearheading the Election Laws Amendment Bill,

which is now in the 2nd reading stage in the National Assembly. The chairman added that the electoral commission has also drafted regulations for the Elections Campaign Finance Act, which will soon be presented to National Assembly.

New Chief Justice to be sworn in by October

Outgoing Chief Justice Willy Mutunga successor will be sworn in by October, a commissioner of the Judicial Service commission (JSC) has revealed. Commissioner Justice Aggrey Muchelule, however urged Kenyans to remain patient and stop speculating on who will take up the position of Mutunga who retires in June. He said the commission has put in place all systems to ensure a new CJ is in place by October. “What we are telling Kenyans is that there should be no anxiety. There will be continuity in the Judiciary after Mutunga’s retirement,” he said. Muchelule said Mutunga’s position has not been declared vacant since there is a timeline in law to be followed to replace him. He said the law states that the CJ seat must be declared vacant first and thereafter advertised for potential candidates to apply. “The shortlisted candidates must be given time to apply and be interviewed and the name of the successful candidate forwarded to the President. The President is thereafter required to forward the name of the successful candidate to the National Assembly for approval and appointment,” he said. He denied claims that the commission is divided over the selection of the next CJ. “As far as we are concerned, there is no division in JSC on the recruitment of the new CJ. The commissioners are working together, contrary to claims by other quarters. We are responsible enough to give Kenyans an independent, competent, responsible and accountable CJ,” Muchelele said. He said the idea that the position was for men only was wrong, adding that women are also capable of leading the Judiciary. “What we want is a responsible man or woman, who can take the Judiciary to the next level irrespective of tribe or gender. The position is not reserved for certain communities and every Kenyan can apply and get the position,” he said.

Police cordon off IEBC offices as Cord stages protest

From Page 1 Koome said the heavy security was in case the protesting crowd became unruly. The opposition had made good their threats to continue their weekly protests at IEBC offices countrywide to force out its commissioners. Cord leader Raila Odinga has accused the commission of biased saying it cannot be trusted to conduct free, fair and credible polls next year. But the commissioners led by chairman Isaack Hassan have vowed to stay put. Mr Hassan said they will only quit if they are removed through a process of law and not due to pressure from

protests. While Mr Odinga had not joined the protests by the time we went to press,

supporters of Cord were already demonstrating along University Way. And the crowd grew bigger with every passing minute. Ruraka MP Tom Kajwang was leading the protests. But Mr Koome said the protests were not cleared. “Cord does not have any documentation authorising their mass action, but as you know, the Constitution is clear regarding the right to picket and we will not stop them,” he said. “However, they should do so peacefully and not try to disrupt any business within the city. You have asked me about the security presence at the IEBC offices. We have our officers there and

you should go and see for yourself,” he told reporters. Anti-riot police were on the scene with water canon to stem any unwanted situation. “We will not be scared… IEBC must go,” the protesters chanted as they called for the removal of IEBC Chairperson Issack Hassan. “We will get you out of the office,” they said. The government had warned the opposition against the protests and told its leaders to initiate a petition if they wanted kick out the commissioners of the electoral body. But that warning was ignored as cord

supporters started converging outside IEBC offices as early as 7am in Nairobi and Kisumu. Kisumu deputy governor Ruth Odinga led demonstrations against the electoral commission amidst tight security from police. She joined the protestors at the midmorning demonstrations and led a group of county leaders and MCAs in the rally. The demonstrators, carrying antiIEBC, placards and banners were however, blocked from accessing the commission’s offices in Milimani by police officers.

Search for missing victims now turn to river The search for the 19 missing persons has now shifted to Nairobi River and its environs after the rescue operation at the Huruma building site came to an end on Saturday evening. According to the director of the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) heading the rescue operation Pius Masai, the missing persons could have been drowned by the waters “while escaping” the collapsing building during the tragedy. “Our team has been working round the clock to make sure everybody is accounted for. We are still missing 19 hence the need to shift our mission to Nairobi River and its environs,” said Masai. He added: “We realised when the river is full it flows at a speed of over 50km/h so if someone fell or dived in they could have been swept away.” At least 38 out of the 49 bodies retrieved from the rubble of the collapsed Huruma building have been identified while 13 remain unidentified 10 days after the tragedy. Officials handling the post mortem and identification have said the bodies at the City Mortuary had decomposed making the process cumbersome. “Some bodies had already decomposed under the rubble making the identification process hard for us. Relatives of the unidentified have failed to turn up which has also slowed the process,” said Masai. “Our tracing team has been working round the clock to make sure all people are accounted for. We are still missing 19 hence the need to shift our mission to Nairobi River and its environs,” he added. He added: “We realised when the river is full it flows at a speed of over 50km/h so if someone fell or dived in they could have been swept away.” He has asked Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) who are also involved

in the rescue efforts to make the names of the missing people public to facilitate the search efforts. As at Monday morning, nine people were still in hospital after two of the survivors succumbed to injuries raising the death toll to 51. Another 141 people have been rescued. More than 25 households are still receiving humanitarian aid at the collapse site from donors including the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHCR) and KRSC as they await to be resettled by the government. The 198 roomed building collapsed last Friday following heavy downpour in the capital with preliminary investigations indicating

that the building was established on a weak foundation. The disaster was the latest of its kind in a rapidly expanding Nairobi Capital city where enforcement of construction codes is lax and violations are rarely punished. Two owners of the building and three local officials have been questioned by police before being released on bail on Wednesday without being charged. Early today, a section of a building at Mombasa’s Nyali Centre, Mombasa collapsed due to what residents claim was poor construction. No injuries were reported but police cordoned off the area amid an evacuation exercise. @wilson_x254

ODM, rights activists oppose closure of Kakuma, Daadab refugee camps The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Amnesty International (AI) have opposed the move to close Northern region refugee camps, warning that the closure will put thousands of lives at risk. In a statement, the Orange party has termed the move to send close to 600,000 refuges back home ‘escapist, immoral and economically wrong.’ ODM Director of elections Junet Mohammed argued that closing the Daadab and Kakuma camps will not solve the underlying issues, adding that the tact by the government would be a breach to international laws. “There is no evidence whatsoever that the extremists emerge from refugee camps. There are no refugee camps in France, Belgium or the US, where terror attacks have occurred. Kenya must not alienate itself from the international community,” said Mohammed. On Friday, the government said the camps in Northern Kenya are being shut as a

result of financial challenges and a threat to national security. In his statement Interior and Coordination PS Karanja Kibicho also disbanded the Department of Refugee Affairs, which worked with humanitarian organisations for the welfare of the refugees. “The government, having taken into consideration its national security interests, has decided that hosting of refugees has to come to an end,” announced Kibicho. Kibicho said the voluntary repatriation process initiated after the 2013 agreement signed by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the Kenyan and Somali governments in 2013 had been very slow. The camps that will be shut down are Daadab and Kakuma camps which host more than 328,000 and 190,000 refuges respectively mostly from war-torn Somalia and South Sudan. The world has reacted angrily to the plans, with Human Rights Watch

saying targeting Somali refugees and ethnic Somalis is discriminatory. The rights group said Kenya has not provided credible evidence linking Somali refugees to any terrorist attacks in the country. “Officials have not provided credible evidence linking Somali refugees to any terrorist attacks in Kenya. Human Rights Watch is not aware of convictions of Somali refugees in connection with an attack in Kenya,” said Muthoni Wanyeki. She added: “This reckless decision by the Kenyan government is an abdication of its duty to protect the vulnerable and will put thousands of lives at risk.” Kenya has hosted refugees for nearly 25 years. After the Westgate attack in 2013, the government had announced it would close the camps. Last year, after the Garissa University massacre, it again announced it was shutting down Dadaab camp, citing it as a safe haven for terrorists. @wilson_x254

South African row over white judge’s rape case comments A white South African judge has sparked a racism row after she purportedly said on social media that rape was part of the culture of black men. Judge Mabel Jansen said the gang-rape of babies, girls and women was seen as a “pleasurable” past-time. MORE ON THIS STORY A petition has been launched to www.capitalfm.co.ke demand her removal as a judge. She said her comments had been taken out of context. South Africa has been hit by a spate of racism rows in recent months, triggered by comments on social media. The government has responded by saying that it intends to toughen anti-racism laws. White minority rule and legalised racism ended in South Africa in 1994. The latest row came after comments that Judge Jansen purportedly made on

Facebook in a conversation with South African activist Gillian Schutte last year went viral at the weekend. “In their culture a woman is there to pleasure them. Period. It is seen as an absolute right and a woman’s consent is not required,” the judge is quoted as saying. In another post attributed to her, she said “murder is not a biggy” for black men and “gang rapes of baby, daughter, and mother [were] a pleasurable pass [sic] time”. Judge Jansen added, according to the post, that the “true facts are most definitely not that espoused by the liberals”. The judge told local media that the posts were from last May, when she was in a private inbox exchange with Ms Schutte in an attempt to get help for victims of rape and assault.

Republican civil war over Trump deepens Donald Trump is poised to breeze through another round of primary contests this week, while the Republican Party splinters around him. Trump’s ascent to the top of the GOP, which was capped last week with Ted Cruz’s devastating loss in the Indiana primary, happened so fast that even the billionaire himself was surprised. And the whipsawed party establishment now faces immediate choices -- none of which particularly appeal to them. Will they unite behind their party’s standard-bearer? Will they sit out the 2016 campaign? Or will they fight on, in a quixotic quest to undermine Trump? Trump’s opponents are still sorting through the wreckage of the GOP primary season for a path forward. But it has become painfully clear over the past five days that party unification will be tough to come by, if it happens at all. Past presidents, party leaders and prominent Republicans are all choosing sides, from unenthusiastic acceptance (Bob Dole) to pledges not to vote for either party in November (former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Lindsey Graham) to musings about a third-party bid (Bill Kristol). Trump himself enters his first full week as the presumptive nominee by signaling that he has limited patience for or interest in the establishment’s rebellion. He’ll meet Thursday with Paul Ryan, after the House speaker’s extraordinary announcement to CNN’s Jake Tapper that he’s “just not ready” to support Trump. But Trump has also made quite clear he doesn’t intend to cast off the provocative style on the campaign

trail that alarmed the Republican establishment and resonated so deeply with primary voters. After spending days on the receiving end of criticism from the likes of Ryan, Romney and Graham, Trump and his supporters hit back -- hard. Sarah Palin, a key Trump surrogate and 2008 vice presidential nominee, took the unusual step of backing the little-known Republican businessman challenging Ryan for his Wisconsin seat. “Paul Ryan is soon to be Cantored,” Palin told Tapper Sunday on “State of the Union,” referring to Eric Cantor, the former Republican House majority leader who was shockingly ousted by a primary challenger in 2014. “His political career is over but for a miracle because he has so disrespected the will of the people, and as the leader of the GOP, the convention, certainly he is to remain neutral,” Palin said. “And for him to already come out and say who he will not support is not a wise decision of his.” For his part, Trump didn’t seem too worried about the talk of the GOP disintegrating because of his nomination. Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Trump questioned the need for party unity, arguing that his campaign is unlike any before and won’t rely on the same political calculations. “Does it have to be unified?” he asked. “I’m very different than everybody else, perhaps that’s ever run for office. I actually don’t think so.” He went on: “I think it would be better if it were unified. I think ... there would be something good about it. But I don’t think it actually has to be unified in the

Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump. The party is still divided as to whether to rally behind Mr Trump or front an alternative candidate to take on the Democrats in November election.

traditional sense.” Those comments underscore the growing debate over whether Trump’s unorthodox candidacy will doom the GOP in the fall or whether the anxious party leadership has grown so out of touch with the electorate that

it’s missing the genuine anger fueling Trump’s rise. You have to draw the conclusion that there is some distance, if not a disconnect, between party leaders and members of Congress and the many voters who have selected

Donald Trump to be the nominee of the party,” John McCain, the GOP’s 2008 nominee, told CNN’s Manu Raju Sunday on “State of the Union. “You have to listen to the people that have chosen the nominee of our Republican Party.

Oil prices climb as Canada wildfires rage:

Oil prices climbed more than 2 per cent on Monday in Asia as traders weighed the impact of wildfires raging in Canada’s top oil-producing province and a change at the top in Saudi Arabia’s energy ministry. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose at 2.5 per cent to $46.68 a barrel while West Texas Intermediate, the US marker, gained 2.9 per cent to $45.94. Fires spreading across the Canadian province, Alberta have prompted oil firms to halt production, reducing the country’s daily output. Officials have warned that they could be fighting the blaze “for months”. Last week, fires ravaged Fort McMurray, compelling the evacuation of residents and forcing companies to shut.

Boost for tourism sector as global visitor bookings go up

International visitors booking flights to Kenya have increased by 27.7 per cent this month, earning the East African powerhouse the second spot in a list of the top African destinations seeing an increase in international arrivals. This is according to the latest data from ForwardKeys, an organisation that analyses reservation transactions daily, indicating that the country’s tourism sector is on the road to recovery. The sector had lost more than 7,000 jobs following a spate of terror attacks in parts of the country over a year ago and the travel advisories from Europe that came with the hitting the sector and the economy. The data comes ahead of an ongoing mission by the Tourism Ministry in South Africa, which seeks to reinvigorate the sector. A delegation, led by Acting Kenya Tourism Board chief executive Jacinta Nzoika are currently in Durban, SA for INDABA 2016, an annual event that embraces new changes to boost Africa’s tourism businesses. In a recent address, Nzioka said the exhibition will provide a platform for the country to drive the message of a new business environment after numerous government initiatives to boost tourism numbers from emerging and source markets. “With the new initiatives to promote travel to our country, Indaba will be best suited to extensively promote our fascinating tourism offerings and world-

class hospitality services to the region and the world besides highlighting this destination as an investment hub and its other facets,” she explained. The three day event which officially ends today, has been tailored to offer a platform through which exhibitors and buyers, as well as media can network to boost the continent’s tourism industry. As many as 10,000 visitors and stakeholders at the forefront of tourism business from all-over the world are meeting in South Africa for INDABA. The fair has been described as the premier African travel and tourism show, with exhibits from 18 countries on the continent this year. Based on ForwardKeys’s data, bookings for May onwards show that nearly all the top African destinations are seeing an increase in international arrivals. Namibia tops the list, up 31.2 per cent over the previous year, with Kenya coming in second at 27.7 per cent, followed by South Africa at 21.6 per cent. Overall, international flight bookings to Africa for the European summer season are currently almost 6 per cent ahead of where they were during the same period last year. This is despite Ebola-related travel advisories and terror attacks in parts of the continent that had kept international visitors at bay. The figures show a 5.9 per cent increase in forward bookings from May to October compared with 2015, with

State to issue two Sh30m bonds to fund infrastructure

The government will offer a nine-year bond to fund infrastructure projects and a two-year Treasury bond for budgetary support worth Sh30 billion, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has said. In a recently-released statement, CBK said it will receive bids until May 17 while the auction will be held on May 18. CBK initially released a statement on Friday announcing the sale, but then requested its withdrawal, saying it had been issued in error before receiving regulatory approval. Approval has since been secured. The nine-year bond seeks to finance projects in the Energy sector worth Sh12.49 billion, projects for Water development worth Sh970 million and projects for the Transport-sector worth Sh25.36 billion. Meanwhile, the twoyear bond will be used for the purpose of budgetary support. CBK said the nine-year bond will be taxfree as is the case for all Infrastructure Bonds as provided for under the Income Tax Act. Only investors with active CDS Accounts with the Central Bank of Kenya are eligible to apply for the bonds. “Secondary trading in multiples of Sh50,000 is to commence on May 24. CBK reserves the right to accept bids in full or part thereof or reject them in total without giving any reason,” the CBK added in its statement. The bonds will be listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

Shoppers to suffer as Nakumatt Ukay shut over floods Shoppers will be forced to re-evaluate their routine for an indefinite period following the temporary closure of the Nakumatt Ukay shopping mall in Westlands after floods hit the outlet over the weekend. Confirming the closure of the outlet, Nakumatt Regional Operations and Strategy Director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy urged customers to shop at other Nakumatt outlets, but assured them that the mall will be back to its normal operations soon. “Arising from the flash floods challenges experienced in parts of Nairobi and specifically at the Ukay Centre shopping mall in the Westlands business district, last night, Nakumatt Holdings, wishes to confirm the temporary suspension of operations at Nakumatt Ukay Supermarket’’ said Thiagarajan in a statement released just hours ago. He said Nakumatt Westlands will operate 24 hours a day to meet the new increasing customer demands. “Following the temporary suspension of operations, Nakumatt Highridge

Supermarket, will now (from tonight) operate, as a 24hour outlet, to meet the immediate customer needs in Westlands, Parklands Business districts and their environs” he said. “We have also adjusted the operating times at Nakumatt Westgate. Customers at Nakumatt Westgate will enjoy an extended opening hour regime, with a daily branch opening at 7am and closing at midnight,” he added. The country has for the past few days experienced unusual heavy rainfall and flash floods, which have resulted in property destruction and deaths. The latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) projects a likelihood of continued heavy rains in most parts of the country including Western, Nyanza, Central and even North Eastern. Recent reports from the Kenya Red Cross Society reveal that over 2,700 households have been displaced by the ongoing heavy rains and floods across the country. Nairobi is the most affected region,

Judiciary launches E-diary to ease cost of doing business

The Judiciary has launched an automated transcription system and E-diary to help reduce the cost of doing business in the country. Speaking during a business conference themed ‘Digitising Government Business: Leveraging ICT to enhance Business Environment’, Industrialistion and Enterprise Development Principal Secretary Julius Korir hailed the launch of the platform dubbed Judiciary Automated Transcription System and E-Diary, adding that it will reform the sector. He said the Automated Transcription System and E-Diary will ensure the judicial reforms address user needs, easing the cost of doing business. “The new system will enhance efficiency and effective in commercial dispute resolution as well as being customer centred, reducing the cost of doing business across the nation,’’ said Korir. The launch makes it the second step after the Judiciary formed Business Court Users Committee (BCUC) in October 2015 comprising representatives from Law Society of Kenya, State Department of Industry and Enterprise Development, Business Community and other stakeholders from the Commercial Division of the High Court to ensure the needs for doing business have been addressed countrywide. Summit cites youth employment as major challenge for Africa Unemployment among Kenya’s youth has been pegged as one of the key challenges facing the country at the just-concluded First African Employers Summit 2016. The summit, which is the first event of its kind on the continent, brought together the continent’s employer organisations, private and public sector decision-makers among other key stakeholders to deliberate and design an employment strategy for Africa that underscore the importance of entrepreneurship and a businessfriendly environment. The three-day event was this weekend officiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta, who simultaneously launched the Business Africa Website, a portal aimed at spurring development in the region. The Summit, which saw representatives from across the continent gathered at Enashipai Resort and Spa in Nakuru, provided an opportunity for debate and practical solutions on the role Africa’s business community can play alongside governments to address unemployment and enterprise growth.

“Today, there remains a number of fundamental challenges that hinder us from realising the full extent of our promise,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta who attended the summit. He said key among these challenges is unemployment and particularly, youth unemployment. “That is why I constantly call on the private sector to ensure it does all it can to mitigate the youth unemployment crisis,” he said. The high-level event brought together top executives and resource persons from the International Labour Organisation, International Organisation of Employers, Business Africa as well as top business and policy leaders from the government and the private sector. It was also graced by employer representatives from Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Benin, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Egypt and Ghana. Ministry now moots plans to implement health facilities upgrade programme Kenya’s Health Ministry has announced plans to implement a national strategy that seeks to accelerate utilisation of maternal, child health and nutrition services offered in health facilities. Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Cleopa Mailu is set to today launch the drive dubbed the ‘Malezi Bora Initiative’. The launch, scheduled to take place at Embakasi Health Centre in Nairobi, comes just days after Mailu said part of a Sh1.4 billion facility allocated for the counties during the current financial year will be used for maternal health. According to the ministry, the initiative has led to an increase in uptake of health services in health facilities, increased knowledge and awareness on maternal, newborn and child health. Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) report has revealed a decline in levels of childhood deaths. The under-five mortality rate has reduced to 52 per 1000 live births, and the infant mortality rate to 39 per 1000 live births. The ministry will also launch a legislation dubbed the national Mental Health Policy ahead of Mental Health Week celebrations which begins today. As part of the policy, the Mathari Teaching & Referral Hospital will be modernised to provide special mental health services, the ministry said. The Mental Health Policy will also ensure that all Kenyans with a mental illness have access to effective and appropriate treatment. Dennis_x254

Dubai Chamber of Commerce pushes for trade ties in Africa The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has reaffirmed its commitment to drive trade and investment between Dubai and Africa. The chamber opened a new office in Maputo to boost bilateral trade between Dubai and Mozambique, which last year stood at Sh19.6 billion (non-Oil trade), act as a strategic hub for other African markets. The office, is Dubai Chamber’s third in Africa following openings in Ethiopia and Ghana. “Our newest African office will build on the strong business opportunities in Africa to boost investor confidence in Mozambique’s and the wider region’s lucrative investment sectors. It will play a central role in supporting the expansion of Dubai businesses in Mozambique and the wider region, as well as foster partnerships across the Middle East and South East Asia through Dubai”, said H.E. Majid Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman, Dubai Chamber. The opening of the Chamber’s third

office came during the Africa Global Business Forum Roadshow that visited South Africa and Mozambique and is looking to visit a number of key African cities this year, including Addis Ababa, Accra, Nairobi and Lagos. Dubai Chamber’s bid to expand in Africa has been growing since 2013 with the launch of the Africa Global Business Forum (AGBF), the biggest platform for mutual investment between the Africa and the world through Dubai - the 4th edition of the forum will take place next year. “The Africa Global Business Forum is testament to Dubai’s recognition of the importance of future business in Africa. As we take our roadshow across the continent, we urged businesses to take advantage of this platform of opportunity by participating in the forum,” added H.E. Majid Saif Al Ghurair. An indicator of Africa’s attractiveness is the continent’s record of successful global trade. In 2015, Dubai’s non-oil

trade with Africa reached $29.7 billion growing from $22.8 billion in 2011. “Africa is the future, with rapidly developing economies, a strong and reliable labour force, and bountiful resources, this continent is full of potential and opportunities. Dubai Chamber is focused on Africa, particularly the Sub-Saharan region,” said H.E. Majid Saif Al Ghurair. Dubai Chamber was one of the first Chamber’s in the world to recognise the potential of the African continent through exploration of investment opportunities in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region, and now has more than 12,000 registered African companies. This leading role is a significant step in the right direction towards establishing joint ventures between Africa and the world, through Dubai. kevin_x254

The event featured other well know soul entertainers like Maurice Kirya a Ugandan Radio France International Discovery Award winner for the Best New African Artist, June Gachui an exemplary entertainer, singer, actress and a professional MC and also on stage was Edward Perseen; who collaborated with June Gachui in celebration of Mother’s Day. The decor at the dome was impeccably done, with the seating area, setting the mood for a lovely afternoon of jazz. The crowd was ready for a soulful afternoon, the ladies all dressed to the nines and the gents looking dashing as ever, this was not your every day music concert. The Koroga Festival 12th Edition was truly a breath of fresh air in the grounds, plus a few lucky winners among the crowd were fortunate enough to win phones and airtime courtesy of Safaricom.

Rangers hold Leopards, move to third MONDAY, MAY 9, 2016

Posta Rangers held AFC Leopards to a barren draw at the Nyayo National Stadium yesterday to earn a crucial point that moved them back to third on the log. Earlier, visiting Western Stima beat Mathare United 2-1 even though the slum boys remain in second place with 23 points, one behind leaders Tusker who won over Kakamega Homeboyz on Saturday. Gor Mahia also continued their march on to the top win a convincing 2-0 win over Muhoroni Youth at the Kisumu stadium on Saturday. They are now fourth with 20 points. Ivan Minnaert’s Leopards went into the match with three back to back losses in all competitions and were eager to get themselves back into the top three. From the first whistle, the game had all the markings of an epic game. As early as the first minute, Rangers who were on a run of five matches without a loss showed their intent, Joseph Nyaga heading across the face of goal an Edwin Mwaura cross. Rangers had started the game on a high and were using their strength on the wings to string attacks but Eugene Ambulwa and Ramadhan Yakub were always well placed to cut off the danger. Leopards had their first chance of the match in the 12th minute, quick play from Simon Abuko and Clifton Miheso on the left finding Kepha Aswani who teed up Andrew Tololwa but the latter’s shot went wide. Zedekiah Otieno’s charges kept their feet forward, attacking in numbers and in pace. Jockins Atudo had the first effort on target in the game after 18 minutes forcing Lucas Indeche to a save with his feet from a freekick 35 yards out. Joseph Nyaga had the game’s best chance in the 25th minute when his tap unmarked at the far post from a decent Timothy Otieno cross went against the upright. Otieno, on form from champions Gor

Mahia had been enterprising on the right side of attack, using his speed to lay in crosses. On the half hour mark, Otieno made one of his trademark runs but his cross could not find anyone to tap home, Leopards clearing. At the stroke of half time, Ingwe had a superb chance to end the half on a high. Rangers center back Salim Abdallah had passed the ball back to Atudo but the skipper let the ball roll allowing Abuko to race him and beat him to it. However, Kepha Aswani could not punish the mistake as his shot from Abuko’s cut back was deflected onto the upright.

In the second half, both teams came from the changing room determined to break the deadlock. It was AFC who had the earliest chance, Abuko picking a loose ball alone inside the box but he could not beat Patrick Matasi one on one, the Rangers custodian narrowing the angle and Abuko shooting wide. Towards the end, Indeche pulled two decent stops, first stretching to pick put a long range effort from Mukaisi while in the final minute of added time, he spread his body nicely one on one to deny substitute Georson Likonoh. Earlier on, Mathare United ensured they remained within striking range

of leaders Tusker FC coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Western Stima. Baron Oketch and Fredrick Nyarombo had given Stima a priceless 2-0 lead at half time and they thought they were on course for a third consecutive win until a huge fight from Mathare saw them share spoils. Oketch opened the scores in the seventh minute after rounding off keeper Peter Odhiambo and Nyarombo made it 2-0 after 26 minutes, heading in a Fredrick Shimonyo cross. Despite going down, Francis Kimanzi’s Mathare showed resilience. Nine minutes from the restart, George

Owino halved the deficit when he rose to head in a Robinson Kamura freekick. Stima had chances to win the game through two very decent counters. Oketch beat Whyvonne Isuza and Kamura for pace on the right in the 80th minute but his cross back to Nyarombo inside the box was cut out by a rushing Owino. The defender came to the rescue again three minutes from time when he pulled off a superb tackle to pick the ball off Junior Mugambi’s feet inside the box after another quickly executed counter. Barcelona within one win of title

Barcelona’s Luis Suarez kisses his thumb as he celebrated his second goal against Espanyol last evening. The Catalans will win the league title if they beat Granada on Saturday.

Barcelona are one win away from retaining their La Liga title after a 5-0 rout of neighbours Espanyol. Lionel Messi opened the scoring and Luis Suarez netted a brace while both Rafinha and Neymar also found the back of the net. Barca are one point ahead of Real Madrid, who beat Valencia 3-2, while Atletico Madrid are out of contention after losing 2-1 at relegated Levante. Barca play their final game at Granada next Saturday and will win the league if the teams finish level on points due to their superior head-to-head record. Luis Enrique’s side looked vulnerable after seeing their lead at the top of the table ebb away during a four-match winless league run wrapped around their Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. But they have bounced back to form in impressive style - scoring 21 goals in winning their past four league games - to put themselves within touching distance of a sixth title in eight seasons.

Suarez, 29, has led the charge with 11 goals in his past four appearances to give the former Liverpool striker 56 in all competitions and 37 in La Liga - four more than Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi has 26 league goals, including four in his past five games. The Argentine set Barca on their way to victory with a superb free-kick before teeing up Suarez to make it 2-0 with a calm finish early in the second half. Suarez then headed home from a corner, before tap-ins from Rafinha and Neymar saw Barca end their home programme with a flourish. Granada, the team now standing between Barca and the title, have nothing to play for after securing their safety with a 4-1 win at Europa League finalists Sevilla. They can be caught on points by Getafe and Sporting de Gijon but have a superior head-tohead record. Granada lost 4-0 at the Nou Camp in January but did beat Barca at home in 2014. Barcelona also have a Copa del Rey final to look forward to against Sevilla on 22 May.

Djokovic sees off Murray to win Madrid Open MONDAY, MAY 9, 2016

World number one Novak Djokovic beat defending champion Andy Murray 6-2 3-6 6-3 in the Madrid Open final. The defeat means the 28-year-old Briton will lose his world number two ranking to Roger Federer. The Scot was blown away in the opening set, but fought back to level, only to fall to the Serb’s power and accuracy in the decider. Djokovic now moves ahead of Spain’s Rafael Nadal with a record 29 ATP Masters 1000 titles. The Serb underlined his current dominance as he claimed his fifth title in the past six Masters tournaments but he was pushed hard by Murray, exemplified by a 14-minute final game as Djokovic survived six deuces and seven break points to hold for the match. “The first couple of break points I remember making two mistakes,” said Murray. “It was kind of back and forth from there and unfortunately I couldn’t quite break, which was a shame because both of us on the break points until that last game were pretty clinical.” Djokovic broke Murray’s serve in the opening game and the 2011 winner gave a masterclass combining powerful

ground shots with brutal accuracy as he found the lines with uncanny regularity. Murray found his second serve coming under huge pressure and Djokovic duly earned a double break before racing to the first set in just 31 minutes. In the second, however, the Scot’s serve began to click into gear and, having won just 17% of points on his second serve in the first set, he increased it to an impressive 60% in the second. Djokovic made crucial forehand and backhand errors in the third game before serving a double-fault to be broken for only the second time in the tournament. The Madrid crowd who were muted as Murray beat local favourite Rafael Nadal 7-5 6-4 in Saturday’s semi-finals were now encouraging the Briton, who responded with some of his best tennis of the week as he won the set with a cheeky drop shot from the back of the court. It was Djokovic’s turn to regroup and after a comfortable hold needed just one of two break points to take the early initiative in the decider. But this was a different Murray from the opening set and the Scot immediately broke back with Djokovic again serving a double fault at the crucial moment.

Again, however, the world number one raised the bar and this time it proved crucial with a decisive break in the sixth game. “When you play against the best players, you are probably not going to win every single time,” said Murray. “But you want to make the matches extremely difficult for them: physically and mentally, so it’s not comfortable. So I think at least today I did that, but unfortunately didn’t get the win. “It’s been a positive week for me this week overal l- a few years ago I wouldn’t have thought I’d be winning against Rafa and then pushing Novak this close on a clay court.” Murray began the match a shadow of the man who had played so well in Madrid all week. The first set wasn’t a contest, but once given an opening by the world number one early in the second, Murray started playing with real conviction, and pushed his man to the limit. And at 2-2 in the decider the match was genuinely in the balance. Djokovic’s response, though, was characteristically brilliant, and after surviving a bout of jitters and a 14-minute final game, he deservedly clinched his record 29th Masters series title.

Man City’s top four hopes now in limbo

Manchester City could miss out on a Champions League place to neighbours Manchester United after Arsenal fought back to draw at Etihad Stadium. Strikes from Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne twice gave City the lead in Manuel Pellgrini’s farewell home game. But Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez goals mean new boss Pep Guardiola could take charge of a side outside European football’s elite club competition. Arsenal need a point against Aston Villa to clinch their top-four place. A draw at home to the already relegated Midlands side would mean Champions League qualification for the 20th successive season for Arsene Wenger’s men, who could yet overhaul their local rivals Tottenham for second. Louis van Gaal’s United, currently fifth, two points behind their neighbours with a game in hand, will finish above City if they win at West Ham and at home to Bournemouth, regardless of how Pellegrini’s side do at Swansea on the final day. City were well placed to win a second Premier League title in three seasons when the affable Chilean announced on 1 February that he would be replaced by Pep Guardiola at the end of the season. Since then the Blues have won only six of their 14 league matches, meaning Guardiola could arrive from Bayern Munich without Champions League football to plan for. Pellegrini has led City to League Cup victory this season and taken them into the Champions League semi-final. But the solemn expression of chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak at the final whistle said everything - finishing fifth is not acceptable for the club’s mega-rich Abu Dhabi owners. Following second-placed Tottenham’s 2-1 home defeat by Southampton earlier on Sunday, Arsenal knew victory would

move them level with their arch-rivals going into the final weekend. Arsene Wenger’s side were unable to take all three points, but they showed character to fight back twice against top-four rivals City. The Blues produced a lively attacking performance after being criticised for a laboured display in their narrow second-leg defeat at Real Madrid on Wednesday. Pellegrini’s side deservedly led when Aguero found space to turn and drill in from the edge of the area. A defensive mix-up between Joe Hart and Gael Clichy conceded the corner from which Giroud equalised with a header, but De Bruyne’s run and precise finish edged City back in front. “We should have won that game, and I think we deserved it. We played very well. Our first 25 minutes were some of the best here this season. But Arsenal’s goals were good. The effort, speed and character was good, and we were playing against a very good team,” Pellegrini said. The home side threatened a third before Arsenal fought back to earn a deserved point through Sanchez’s clinical strike from 15 yards. Despite missing the chance to rein in Spurs, Wenger was satisfied with a point that puts them on the verge of Champions League football. “I am not disappointed because twice we were losing and twice we came back. It was a game that was very, very intense. I was surprised by the intensity of City’s start. We expected an intense game but they really came out with strong pressure,” said the Frenchman. Only a shock loss against Villa, coupled with City and Manchester United taking maximum points in their remaining games, would see the Gunners finish fifth.
