atundu South MP Moses Kuria, mostly known for hitting news headlines for wrong reasons, is at it once again. The controversial lawmaker is in the eye of a storm after he allegedly called on the government to “assassinate” Cord leader Raila Odinga because he is a “threat to the nation”.
He made the sensational remarks yesterday evening at a thanksgiving rally of a vernacular station radio presenter held at the Kasarani Indoor Stadium in Nairobi. A one-minute video of his remarks made in the Gikuyu language has since gone viral on social media with most Kenyan users calling for his arrest over the utterances. NCIC summons Kuria, mulls annulment of his bail terms MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and his Bahati counterpart Kimani Ngunjiri over alleged incitement to violence remarks. The two legislators have been told to appear before the commission on Thursday this week to record statements over the remarks they made over the weekend. Addressing a press conference at the commission headquarters today, NCIC Chairperson Francis Ole Kaparo said his commission is disturbed by the indecent behavior and utterances by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria. The commission said it may be forced to write to the courts to cancel bail for the gatundu South lawmaker who is already facing three counts of incitement to violence, hate speech and fanning ethnic hatred. “Utterances by Moses Kuria have gone beyond baiting and priming. They must be dealt with accordingly as he could stir up ethnic animosity,” said Kaparo. Mr Kuria was captured on tape yesterday calling for the assassination opposition leader Raila Odinga during a thanksgiving ceremony of a vernacular station radio presenter held at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi. In the one minute and half video clip that was circulated in the social media, Mr Kuria is heard making inflammatory remarks. On the other hand, his Bahati counterpart Kimani Ngunjiri was also captured inciting his community against the Luo community saying that members of the community should leave Nakuru County immediately. The MP spoke to a charged crowd after Cord leader Raila Odinga held a political rally in the town on Saturday. NCIC has lamented that there is an emerging trend of political zoning in the conduct of politics in the country.
National Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Francis Ole Kaparo at the commission’s offices in Nairobi today when he addressed a press conference on rising cases of ethnic profiling.
The commission said that the ongoing ethnic balkanization is dangerous for Kenya and ‘is a recipe for disaster worse than the 2007 post-election violence.’ “Politicians must desist from zoning the country into strongholds, battle grounds and red zones as this continues to fragment an already divided society” Kaparo warned. The commission revealed that it had
also received disturbing reports of hate leaflets being circulated in Naivasha, asking a certain community to leave Nakuru, Naivasha and Eldoret. “The commission has noted this with great concern and warns perpetrators of hate messages that their actions are in violation of section 13 of the NCIC Act 2008, should they be found culpable they shall be liable to a fine of one million shillings or imprisonment
to a term not exceeding three years or both,” he added. He also condemned the attacks and disruption of the CORD leader Raila Odinga’s meeting in Nakuru and called for the police to arrest the culprits.
Moses Kuria at it yet again
From Page 1 “We have summoned Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria to our offices on Thursday to record statements over their utterances over the weekend that border on ethnic balkanization and political zoning,” NCIC chairman Francis ole Kaparo told a press conference earlier today. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said they are reviewing the statements and would take action if an offence is disclosed. “Police are studying the video clips. We take such matters very seriously,” Boinnet told Capital FM on telephone. “We will not spare anyone because the law is very clear,” Boinnet added. Mr Ngujiri is accused of mobilizing youths to attack an hotel in which Cord leader Raila Odinga was holding a meeting with his party officials in Nakuru town on Saturday. Mr Kuria was with Kabete counterpart Ferdinand Waititu who is also being investigated according to the police. While it is not the first time Kuria is on the spot over hate speech and making utterances of incitement, NCIC is now expressing concern over the rising trend. “We condemn in the strongest terms possible the emerging trends of political zoning in the conduct of politics in the country,” Mr Kaparo added. But Kuria has moved to defend himself saying his utterances have been misinterpreted. “They said I mentioned the Luo community today. I did not. But they control social media. IG Boinett said anyone who wants to demonstrate needs to give a route and destination of the demo so that police can give protection. As I mentioned in a post yesterday (Saturday) that is very important lest a lone gunman take advantage and shoots people say for example Raila. That is all I repeated today,” he said in a Facebook post after his video went viral last evening.

I am ready for talks, President says on IEBC stalemate President Uhuru Kenyatta has reiterated his readiness to talk and discuss concerns on the IEBC to ensure the country goes to the election next year in peace. The President asked the opposition to appoint its members to the Joint Select Committee of Parliament to engage in the dialogue on the electoral body, saying Jubilee has already picked its team of 11 members. “It does not matter who the commissioners are. We will go to the people for they are the ones who pick leaders,” President Kenyatta said in Kitui yesterday.
He was speaking after attending an inter-denominational church service at Kitui High School as he wrapped up his visit to the Lower Eastern counties of Kitui and Machakos where he inspected and initiated development projects. His Deputy William Ruto said the Jubilee Coalition agreed to negotiate with the opposition on the issue of IEBC because it has the interest of the country at heart. “Kenya is bigger than all of us. We ask the opposition to come to the table and stop giving conditions,” Ruto said.
He however insisted that the negotiations must be guided by the Constitution that is the supreme law of the land. President Kenyatta also warned against tribalism, saying the vice was dragging the country back. He observed that at independence, Kenya was at par in development with the Asian countries of Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore – that came to be known as the Asian Tigers. But when tribal politics took over, Kenya got a beating in terms of growth. He said the Jubilee Government has implemented and is still
implementing the pledges it gave to the people. “Households are being connected to
power. By next year, 70 per cent of Kenyans will have electricity,” he said.

Let’s instill values in our children, Gov. Kidero urges Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has urged parents to instill proper values in their children to ensure a better future for them. Speaking at the Ruaraka Methodist church where he attended a church service before presiding over a function yesterday evening, the governor (pictured below) said today’s children have been left on their own and called for parental guidance. “Our Children are born without social knowledge or social skills, and they eagerly look for someone to imitate. That “someone” is usually one or both parents. Parents are a child’s first teachers and role models,” Dr Kidero said. He said children are more affected by what their parents and leaders do than by what their parents say. They learn how to behave by seeing how their mother, fathers and their leaders behave and by following their example. “It is a high time as a society we visited our value system. We need to instill a value system in our children that cares; that is honest, just and fair,” he added. “The cohesive society that was there during independence is under threat. We need to come together and be a cohesive society,” he said.

Uhuru tells UNHCR to support Kenya plans for repatriation of refugees President Uhuru Kenyatta is urging the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support the government’s initiative to repatriate refugees from the Dadaab camp. While pointing out that the decision to send the refugees back to their home country is final, State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu reiterated the government’s assurance that it will be done in a humane manner. He stated that the decision was mainly driven by the environmental and security dangers posed in the country by hosting the refugees. Kenya has been hosting more than 350,000 Somali refugees for more than two decades. “This (Sunday) morning, the President met the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. His message on Dadaab is the same. That the decision to repatriate the refugees is final, and that partner organisations such as UNHCR should step up the plate and work on his this process can be accomplished in a humane way and without threat to anyone’s life,” Esipisu told journalists at a briefing in State House soon after the meeting. Esipisu further indicated that President Kenyatta will also be seeking the European Union support in the initiative during his visit to Brussels set for Monday next week, when he will meet Prime Minister Charles Michel. “It is the same message the President had for EU Ambassadors and High Commissioner whom he met on Friday. At that meeting, and it is a message he will take to Brussels as well, any assistance to Somalia to

President Kenyatta had earlier stated that the decision to close the Dadaab refugee camp was driven by national security interests. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery recently announced that the refugees will be repatriated by November this year, in line with recommendations of a task force set up to advice the
government. The President said the effects of hosting the refugees were being felt as far as Lamu county and Namanga (Kajiado County) at the Tanzania border. Besides the Dadaab camp itself, the President said, the refugees extend their threats of terrorism, radicalization, recruitment and environmental degradation to the neighboring counties.
He called on the EU members to continue partnering with Kenya to assist Somalia rehabilitate the returning refugees and rebuild their country. The President said Kenya has over the past 20 years carried a huge responsibility over the Somalia crisis adding it was now time to assist the Somalis go back to their country.

Gunman worked for global security firm
The man behind the worst mass shooting in U.S. history worked since 2007 as a security officer at one of the world’s largest private security companies, which said Sunday it was “deeply shocked” by the news. “We are cooperating fully with all law enforcement authorities, including the FBI, as they conduct their investigations,” G4S Secure Solutions said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims of this unspeakable tragedy, and their friends and families.” Omar Mateen, 29, killed 50 people and injured 53 others at a gay club in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday morning, according to authorities. G4S said that Mateen started working for it in September 2007 and that company screening and background checks “revealed nothing of concern.” Another screening in 2013 turned up “no findings.” Florida state records show he was a licensed security officer. The company said it learned in 2013 that Mateen had been questioned by the FBI, “but that the inquiries were subsequently closed.”
“We were not made aware of any alleged connections between Mateen and terrorist activities, and were unaware of any further FBI investigations,” it said. The FBI says it interviewed Mateen in 2013 and 2014. “Those interviews turned out to be inconclusive, so there was nothing to keep the investigation going,” FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Ronald Hopper told reporters. Mateen worked at a gated retirement community in South Florida, according to G4S. G4S is a U.K-based firm with roughly 600,000 employees and operations in more than 100 countries. It provides security guards, technology and other services. Its customers span a range of industries including mining, finance and retail. Mateen, who was shot and killed by police, claimed allegiance to ISIS in a phone call to authorities around the time he carried out the “organized and well-prepared” attack, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.

Orlando shooter who killed 50 in US ‘disturbed’, says ex-wife
June.
The ex-wife of a man who opened fire on a gay nightclub in Orlando in the early hours of Sunday has said he was “mentally unstable” and “disturbed”. Omar Mateen killed 50 people and wounded 53 more in the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history, before being shot dead by police. The so-called Islamic State group has said it was behind the attack, but the extent of its involvement is not clear. A security company that Mateen used to work for said he was vetted twice. The checks in 2007 and 2013 did not reveal anything of concern, G4S said, and Mateen had carried a gun as part of his job. Sitora Yusufiy lived with Mateen for four months in 2009. She said her family “rescued” her from the relationship when they became aware that he was being physically abusive. He beat her up regularly during their shortlived marriage for trivial things like not doing laundry, she said. “When he would get in his tempers, he would express hate toward everything. He was mentally unstable and mentally ill: that’s the only explanation that I could give.” Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent who was born in New York and lived in Florida, was not on a terrorism watch list. However, officials revealed that the FBI had twice interviewed him in 2013-14 after he made “inflammatory remarks” to a colleague, before closing their investigation. It has emerged that he legally purchased several guns in the past few days.
The attack began at about 02:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Sunday at the Pulse nightclub. There was an exchange of fire with a police officer working at the club, after which the suspect took hostages. At 05:00 a police assault team went into the club after police received text messages and phone calls from some of the hostages. Mateen was killed in an exchange of fire.

Gun attack an act of hate, Obama says as US mourns 50 killed in gay nightclub MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016
US President Barack Obama has described Sunday morning’s gun attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, as “an act of terror and an act of hate”. Americans were united in “grief, outrage and resolve to defend our people”, he said. Omar Mateen, 29, killed 50 people and wounded 53 at the Pulse club before being shot dead by police. The so-called Islamic State group has said it was behind the attack, but the extent of its involvement is not clear. A statement on its affiliated Amaq news agency said that an IS “fighter” was responsible. NBC News reported that Mateen had called the emergency services before the
attack and swore allegiance to IS. The gunman was killed in an exchange of fire with 11 police officers, after taking hostages at the club. The attack is the worst mass shooting in recent US history. Eight of the victims have so far been named: Edward Sotomayor Jr, Stanley Almodovar III, Luis Omar OcasioCapo, Juan Ramon Guerrero, Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera, Peter O Gonzalez-Cruz, Luis S Vielma and Kimberly Morris. A moment of silence was observed across the US at 18:00 local time (22:00 GMT). In an apparently unrelated event, a heavily armed man was held on weapons and explosive materials charges in
southern California after saying he wanted to go to a gay pride event in Los Angeles. Mr Obama said the “brutal murder of dozens of innocent people” was a further reminder of how easy it was to acquire a deadly weapon in the US and shoot people. “We have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be,” said the president, who has campaigned for stricter gun laws. “To actively do nothing is a decision as well.” He added that it was a heartbreaking day for the LGBT community, and that an attack on any American was an attack on all. Mr Obama has ordered flags on federal buildings to be flown at half mast until sunset on Thursday. Later the White House said Mr Obama had postponed a joint appearance with the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee for president, Hillary Clinton. Mrs Clinton said in a statement: “This reminds us once more that weapons of war have no place on our streets.” And in a message to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people, she said: “We will keep fighting for your right to live freely, openly and without fear. Hate has absolutely no place in America.” Meanwhile her Republican rival, Donald Trump, said Mr Obama should step down for refusing to use the words “radical Islam” when condemning the attack. “If we do not get tough and smart real fast, we are not going to have a country any more,” he said. The head of the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations urged politicians not to “score points” or “exploit fear” in the

aftermath of the attack. In a direct message to IS, Nihad Awad said: “You do not speak for us. You do not represent us. You are an aberration.” Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent who was born in New York and lived in Florida, was not on a terrorism watch list. However, officials revealed that the FBI had twice interviewed him in 2013-14 after he made “inflammatory remarks” to a colleague, before closing their investigation. US election is war of demographics: Donald
Trump’s racially charged attacks on a US-born judge of Mexican heritage have put a spotlight on the important role Latinos will play in the forthcoming election — but they are just one of a host of important demographic groups in November. Latinos could comprise more than 27m eligible voters in November and Hillary Clinton is aggressively courting them in swing states including Florida and Colorado, hoping to capitalise on Mr Trump’s hostile language towards immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere. But Mrs Clinton also needs to boost her appeal to younger female voters, who have shown more enthusiasm for her Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders.

The World Bank is set to embark on a Sh111 billion initiative aimed at funding transformative projects in the country. President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday said that the money will be used to provide solar energy to households, public institutions such as health centres and educational institutions. He noted that the initative will mainly focus on transforming Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid areas. “Key features of the program include, incentivizing private companies to expand into these counties, developing mechanisms to make solar products more affordable to consumers without distorting the commercial market and supporting the enforcement of quality standards for solar products,” he said, though his spokesman Manoah Esipisu. “The project is expected to generate employment for youth through operations and maintenance that would be required of solar systems. The counties involved are Mandera, Turkana, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, West Pokot, Samburu, Lamu, Tana River, Narok, Kwale, Kilifi, and Tana River,” he added. Esipisu also stated that a project to increase the agricultural productivity of farmers in the area will be set up to assist pastoral communities in improved agricultural technologies. “Farmers and pastoralists will be assisted with improved agricultural technologies, innovations and management practices. It will also

Youth partner with Saccos, to cash in on Sh20mn Biashara Fund
As many as 45 groups of youth, women and people living with disability from Gatundu South Sub-County have benefitted from a Sh20 million facility dubbed the Kiambu Biashara Fund. The youth have partnered with local Saccos and cooperatives to start agribusiness as a means of upkeep. The fund, which was launched in 2013, has seen 95 per cent loan repayments from the first and second tranches that is almost fully paid. Governor William Kabogo has urged youth in the county to take advantage of such initiatives. He also announced plans to increase the revolving fund to Sh300 million through the County Assembly were underway. Speaking at an event to disburse the cash in Gatundu, Governor Kabogo said that the fund had had a great impact on the youth noting that while insecurity remained rampant, notable reduction had been recorded because majority of the youth previously blamed are now self-employed. “The youth who would previously drown themselves in illicit liquor and breaking into people’s homes are now too busy on their businesses or farms. The fund has reported such great impact and it warrants a boost in terms of budgeting,” Kabogo explained. He was accompanied by Youth Affairs CEC Machel Waikenda who called on the youth to venture in other forms of employment like farming other than waiting for white collar jobs which were not forthcoming.
Helios buys majority stake in Orange East Africa as telco eyes recovery Helios Investment Partners, a private equity investing firm operating in Africa and based in London, has successfully completed the acquisition of a majority stake in telecommunications company, Orange East Africa. National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich announced the completion of the transfer of a majority shareholding of Telkom Kenya (TKL) from Orange East Africa (OrEA) to Jamhuri Holdings Limited (JHL); a company owned by Helios Investors III, a fund advised by Helios Investment Partners. Helios through JHL has acquired 60 per cent shareholding of Telkom Kenya; increasing the Government shareholding to 40 per cent up from 30 per cent. “As part of the transaction the Government of Kenya reached an agreement with Helios/JHL through which the Government has agreed
not to exercise its pre-emptive right to purchase the OrEA Shareholder Loans in consideration of JHL agreeing to the Transfer of 10 per cent of the shares in TKL to the Government for a consideration of Sh1 such that the Government’s shareholding in TKL will increase from 30 to 40 per cent,” Rotich explained at a signing ceremony on Friday. The completion of the transaction means OrEA which was a 70 per cent shareholder has fully divested from TKL. “Helios is excited about the opportunity to work with all stakeholders to transform Telkom Kenya into a successful telecommunications operator in Kenya. We look forward to partnering with the company’s staff, customers, business partners, our co-shareholder GOK as well as the Kenyan public in general to progress the development of the
telecommunications sector in Kenya,” said Babatunde Soyoye, co-founder and Managing Partner of Helios Investment Partners. Rotich said they have seen the positive impact of Helios investments in other sectors of the economy and expressed optimism that their investment in TKL will have a transformative impact on the operations and standing of the company. “We wish Helios well and look forward to interacting further, as we seek to find ways on how best we can achieve our mutual objective of growing TKL into a sustainable and prosperous business.” TKL has been facing a number of challenges for a fairly long time. With a renewed focus and energy, it could turn around, be sustainable and able to compete effectively in the telecommunications sector, Rotich said.

Breakfast chief culprit in Kenya’s diabetes crisis, says Broadway Bakery MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016
Kenya is suffering a diabetes crisis that is set to paralyse the country’s health system in coming years. The crisis is being driven by excessive sugar consumption, according to Broadway Bakery Ltd. Broadway Bakery Director Mr Bimal Shah, has since called on food manufacturers to reduce the sugar content in their products. Currently, Kenyans consume some 60 grams of sugar a day compared with Tanzanians who consume a typical 23 grams a day. In India, citizens typically consume just 5 grams of sugar a day, while the Chinese average just over 15 grams a day. Addressing the African Food Manufacturing and Safety Summit at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi on ahead of the weekend, Mr Shah laid out a looming crisis for the healthcare system and for Kenyans, noting that diseases are being driven by poor food choices, triggering debilitating and permanent sicknesses in adults as young as 25 years. “Figures indicate that already more than 5 per cent of 25 year old Kenyans are developing diabetes, which is a lifelong condition that causes kidney failure, loss of limbs, comas and a range of debilitating and life threatening complications, from a disease that is triggered profoundly by excessive sugar consumption,” explained Mr Shah. “As diets shift towards manufactured

and processed foods, we have a responsibility as an industry to start addressing the excessive sugar content in some of our food products and beverages,” he said. Presenting some of the key causes of detrimental sugar intake, Mr Shah cited figures from the World Health Organisation showing that the majority of sugar is consumed at breakfast as sugar added to tea, but also in some
breads that contain more sugar than cakes, biscuits and cereals. On the basis that more than 49.5 grams of sugar is consumed at breakfast time, compared with the WHO guidelines for 50 grams of sugar a day, Broadways Bakery has taken a long-term decision to manufacture and deliver bread that is sugar-light. Broadway bread contains sugar at the rate of only 2.5 per cent of flour weight, compared with 7 to 8 per
cent for other leading brands. Broadway Bakery has also now launched a nationwide ‘#BeSugarSmart’ campaign to raise sugar awareness across Kenya. WHO data shows that the country has a sweeter tooth than almost all of Africa with Kenyans consuming more sugar than all other African nationals except South Africans and the citizens of Swaziland. Kenyans’ excessive sugar consumption has also brought a surge
in obesity with almost one fifth of preschool Kenyans now obese and almost a third of Kenyans overweight. “Sugar is not a bad thing at all, if consumed in moderation. But where Kenyans have shifted to excessively high sugar diets, the price is being paid by many in hospitalisation and long term health issues,” said Mr Devan Shah, Business Development Executive at Broadway Bakery. @Dennis_x254

Kenya selected to host regional Center for Disease Control Kenya has been selected to host the Eastern Africa Regional Collaborating Center of the Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) after a successful capacity assessment conducted by 15 experts drawn from the African Union (AU), the World Health Organization (WHO), CDC-US and CDC-China. Africa’s CDC intends to use the Center to monitor public health and responses to emergencies, address complex health challenges to build capacity in the region consisting of Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South-Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. According to Ministry of Health Principal Secretary Dr. Nicholas Muraguri, Kenya was awarded the hosting rights because of the strength of its disease surveillance systems and the role the country played in sending disease experts to Liberia and Sierra Leone following the Ebola outbreak. The technical competence of the Kenya Medical Research Institute also contributed to the selection. “The award is expected to strengthen the country’s health systems by enhancing disease surveillance capacity in terms of infrastructure and human resources, disease outbreak alert systems as well as lab capacity,” Dr.Muraguri said. In a statement issued during the weekend, he added that Kenya will formally be endorsed by Heads of State during the forthcoming AU summit, alongside Egypt, Gabon, Nigeria and Zambia which, will also host other

Williamson Tea reports Sh980 million pre-tax profit on back of high prices and weak shilling Williamson Tea Kenya Ltd has posted a profit before tax of Sh980.7 million for the financial year (FY) ended March 31, 2016 on the back of high market prices and weak shilling. The tea manufacturer also posted a turnover of Sh3.39 billion versus Sh2.59 billion a year ago. Its FY profit before taxation of 980.7 million comes against a loss of Sh298.6 million posted in the previous year. “The year has started with very high crops and large volumes of tea on offer at the auction selling historically low prices. Any turnaround to this is subject to prevailing weather conditions which will influence the laws of supply and demand,” Company Secretary G.K. Masaki said in a statement. The Company Secretary added that cropping patterns and therefore prices, were erratic through the year. Low supply initially forced prices up before giving way to extremely favourable conditions, supply surged and prices crashed. “Whilst the Group Investing activities honoured long term contract commitments to partially miss out on the initial strength of the market, an increase in crop of 19 per cent, higher turnover on higher prices and a weak shilling have all contributed to the increase,” the firm said in a statement. Higher inventory levels (unsold tea) also reduced the cost of sales and as a result the Group has reported an operational profit of Sh584 million against Sh97 million in the previous year. The Board has since recommended a final dividend of Sh20 per share from the profit realised during the year. The recommended Final Dividend is subject to approval in an upcoming Annual General Meeting. @Dennis_x254

Private Kenyan company announces plans to buy 23 per cent stake in Britam Plum LLP, a privately held company with operations in Kenya, has announced plans to buy a 23.34 per cent stake in insurer BritishAmerican Investments Co (Britam) that was seized by the government of Mauritius from a disgraced businessman in 2015. The privately owned firm made the announcement on Monday, saying it expected the acquisition to be completed by July 31. Plum sad the move would raise its shareholding in Britam to 38.54 per cent. Mauritius seized the stake from businessman Dawood Rawat in April 2015 after accusing him of running a Ponzi-like scheme through a Mauritian insurer. At the time, Minister for Financial Services Sudarshan Bhadain said that an offer from another operator “could not go through because the existing shareholders in Kenya were not willing to allow third parties into their company.” Rawat, who has been in France since last year, has filed a case before the International Court of Arbitration against the government of Mauritius, asking for $1 billion in compensation, claiming illegal appropriation of Britam by the state, Reuters reports. “The partners of Plum LLP ... determined

Stanford Seed celebrates regional launch, private sector to support group’s initiative MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016
Stanford Seed, an organization that seeks to empower business owners across the East African region, has received renewed support from Kenya’s private sector. The group recently celebrated the initiative’s launch in East Africa with an event filled with innovators and promising business leaders from across the region, continent and globe. The celebration came just days after Stanford University formally launched its second SEED Transformation Program in Nairobi. The Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (SEED) is an initiative of the prestigious Stanford Graduate School of Business. The Kenyan SEED Center will be the second in the world, with the first having been built in 2013 in Accra, Ghana. Last month, the first cohort, comprising promising business leaders from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia, gathered to begin the yearlong educational process. They will be taught by world renowned Stanford faculty. Following the launch, the Sankara Hotel was recently host to a dynamic gathering of the region’s private sector professionals, celebrating alongside notable individuals from Stanford University and both the US and Kenyan Governments. The inspiring mix of entrepreneurs, educators and innovator came together to applaud Seed’s launch in the region and the culmination of the first week of the Seed Transformation Program. Stanford Seed East Africa has now taken root in the region with the aim to inspire prosperity through private sector growth. The event was preceded by a brief press conference where key Seed stakeholders highlighted the mission of Stanford Seed East Africa, and participants from the initiative’s West and East African
Stanford Seed East Africa has taken root in the region with the aim to inspire prosperity through private sector growth. Seed Transformation Program (STP) spoke of their experience with the program. Also at the event, Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Garth Saloner, spoke alongside members of the very first STP East African Cohort, Cirru Waweru and Olivier Mugabonake. “We look forward to developing long and fruitful relationships with the many companies that are poised for rapid growth that will fuel the regional economy. We know we have much to learn and we look forward to being students of entrepreneurship and growth in this East African center. But
Tourism Ministry partners with private sector to enhance destination competitiveness The Ministry of Tourism is taking the lead in negotiating with Kenya’s private sector to enhance destination competitiveness Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has said. The ministry has been taking major steps to revitalise the dwindling sector following the reading of the National Budget last week. Stakeholders have since agreed and committed to implement a common calendar of tourism activities for the coast region, one of the country’s most popular regions for foreign visitors. The Ministry has confirmed that the 2016/17 Budget is geared towards recovery, promotion, growth, investment and sustainability of the tourism sector.
The Kenya tourism Federation has already expressed its appreciation to government for support extended to the tourism sector in the 2016/17 budget. Balala today met with Tourism Principal Secretary Fatuma Hirsi, together with the Department of Tourism to hold a strategy meeting that also seeks to reinvigorate the industry. The meeting’s objective, is it to come up with an implementation plan for priority activities in the Tourism sector. CS Balala took the opportunity to brief the Department of Tourism on his agenda for the next 2 years.

we also look forward to bringing with us a culture of innovation and the considerable knowledge and experience of Stanford University, its Graduate School of Business, and Silicon Valley through Seed, the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies,” Dean Saloner said. Honorable Robert Godec, Ambassador of the United States of America to Kenya commented on the synchronicity between the Stanford Seed initiative and the current US administration’s programs to foster entrepreneurial growth in the region, including the African Growth and Opportunity
Act (AGOA), which enhances market access to the US for many Sub-Saharan African countries. Ambassador Godec also spoke of President Obama’s comments at the Global Economic Summit, encouraging African growth through economic development and how Seed’s presence will manifestly bolster East African business’s ability to scale and thus economically transform the region. Stanford University opened in 1891 and has developed a reputation as one of the most elite academic institutions in the world. Dean Saloner highlighted how Seed is based on the Silicon
Valley style and spirit, an “Innovation chain that begins at Stanford”. Silicon Valley is recognized as a wellspring of innovation, making it one of the most productive business regions in the world. The next round of applications for the Seed Transformation Program begins in September this year, further information can be found on the Stanford Seed website. uckwyld ‘n’ Breathless; The Disruption was being lauded as the most anticipated concert of the year. It’s not every day Nairobi gets two of the most successful musical acts of the continent sharing a stage. And breathless it was for everyone involved. It might not have been the theatrical production we were promised but it was still a great show. Plus, the concert had more meat on its bones than was even advertised. The surprise act for everyone had to be Kelly Hansome. He might still be building his name this side of the mainland but he knows how to rock a mic. He proved that Africans, no matter where we might be from, can appreciate the sound of good music when we hear it. Vanessa Mdee did her thing and one of her back-up dancers won the entire night with some upper echelon rumpshaking. She smiled through Mdee’s entire set just to ensure we knew she was enjoying every bit of it. We as Kenyans might be suffering from overexposure to Sauti Sol but they are well and truly worth the hype they carry. It was a revelation when they got more of a rise from the crowd
than even 2Baba did. The boys performed all their big hits and everybody, even the VIP guests who are notoriously conservative at gigs, huddled around the stage. That’s when the concert finally lived up to its name. The whole audience suddenly got a little breathless, especially when that one song with the undulating groins, ‘Nishike’ started. All the females suddenly found themselves struck with a little case of extreme thirst. 2Baba did an admirable job and his biggest hits ‘African Queen,’ ‘True Love’ and ‘If Love Is a Crime’ were real crowd pleasers but he was no-less overshadowed by Sauti Sol. All the artists were by them. It was astounding to watch. Churchill didn’t actually make any jokes, he was there to have a good time, which he did by dancing with some girls from the audience and Kagwe looked the part but his performance flew under the radar. Something to note would be the rowdy crowd suffocated Alibaba’s set and that was a shame because he was actually funny. At the heart of the night was a PanAfrican pursuit. No matter how far removed from our ancestors we are and no matter the physical distance that separates us, Africans are and always will be Africans.

USIKU MCHANA Usiku Mchana is a song from the best female rappers in Kenya (Femione and Xtatic). Femione says that the song is all about what she has been going through and what she keeps on going through in her career. The song has been recorded and produced by Ricco Beats and it is about lovers who feel insecure that the fame and money might change them and also reassures them that they will remain humble regardless of the change effect.
IBAKI STORI After signing in with Diamond Platinum’s Wasafi records, he recorded and released his first song entitled Ibaki Stori as his first offering. Gor bottles Tusker in Top 8 semis MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016
Defending champions Gor Mahia edged closer to their third Kenyan Premier League Top 8 title after seeing off Tusker FC 2-0 in the first leg of the semi-final played at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday. Goals in the first half from Rwandese Jacques Tuyisenge and Enock Agwanda eased Gor to the important win heading into next weekend’s return leg. Gor head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira handed promoted Gor Youth skipper Amos Nondi his first start of the season deploying him on the right side of midfield while Ernest Wendo marshaled the middle alongside Francis Kahata in the absence of Khalid Aucho and Collins ‘Gattuso’ Okoth. Coming off a run of five unbeaten matches and having not conceded, Gor were not just about to let their feet off the gas pedals. Tuyisenge opened the scores in the 13th minute after controlling the ball with his thigh and using his sheer strength to wade off the pressure from Eugene Asike before shooting past Tusker keeper Martin Musalia. Gor had asserted their authority early and the goal was an imprint of their intent from the start. Tusker had a chance in the 18th minute with Osborne Monday’s shot from the edge of the box deflected for a corner which Collins Shivachi headed inches wide from Shafik Batambuze’s delivery. That would only be a scare for K’Ogalo and they kept their attacking mantra and Tuyisenge should have doubled his tally with a shot from the right, when he rolled across the face of goal in the 20th minute. The defending champions doubled their lead in the 23rd minute with Enock Agwanda rising high to head in a corner from Francis Kahata. Two minutes to half time, Wafula missed a glorious opportunity shooting wide from a good scoring range after being put through by Tuyisenge who

had intercepted possession off Tusker. Tusker head coach Paul Nkata sought a new formula to tackle the remaining 45 minutes, choosing to pull out winger Noah Wafula for the more skillful Danson Kago. But still, Tusker continued playing second fiddle to Gor and the latter should have been two up 10 minutes into the half but Agwanda shot wide
after being set up by Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma who took on a powerful run on the left before cutting back. On the other end, Monday came close for Tusker with a freekick that flew over the wall and went a yard off target despite Jerim Onyango well beaten. Humphrey Mieno, who is linked with a move to the record 15-time league champions, was Tusker’s best player
on the pitch as he drove the team from midfield but the results were minimal. New signing Baron Oketch was given his debut with 20 minutes left coming on for Agwanda and he gave a good account of himself with good runs on the wing. In the 74th minute he came close with a shot that flew wide after beating Shivachi on the right. With 10 minutes to stoppage time,
Tusker threw everything in attack, bringing on striker Stephen Owusu for Antony Ndolo but K’Ogalo kept their composure to ensure a comfortable score line heading into the return leg. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke
Bolt stumbles to 100m win in Jamaica
Bolt races past compatriots Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell during the Races Grand Prix in Kingston, Jamaica over the weekend.
Olympic champion Usain Bolt recorded the second fastest time of the year in winning a 100m race in Jamaica despite stumbling out of his starting blocks. Bolt ran 9.88 seconds at the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston. Only Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut (9.86) has gone quicker. After a poor start, Bolt caught fellow Jamaicans Yohan Blake, the London 2012 silver medallist, and Asafa Powell by 60m before easing over the line. “I’m happy I got a season best. It was not a perfect race but I won,” he said. “I was trying to control the start but it’s just one of those things. It comes, it goes. “I think I dragged my foot too hard so it kind of propelled me forward and then I just tried to correct myself, not try to panic and just make my way through.” Bolt, the 100m world record holder, added that he was “in good nick” ahead of Jamaica’s Olympic trials which start on 30 June. “The more I run, the smoother my running will become and the faster I’ll get,” he said. Nickel Ashmeade finished second in 9.94secs, with Blake third and Powell fourth. Kingston-born two-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the women’s race in 11.09secs, narrowly beating world indoor champion Barbara Pierre of the United States.

Modric fires Croatia to victory over Turkey MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016
Luka Modric’s stunning strike helped Croatia claim victory in its opening game of Euro 2016 with a 1-0 win over Turkey in Paris. Modric’s fierce first half volley was enough to secure all three points for a Croatia side which hit the woodwork twice and dominated its opponent all afternoon. It is eight years since these two teams played out a thrilling quarterfinal tie in Vienna, a game which Turkey won on penalties having equalized in the final minute of extra-time. Croatia, which had taken a 1-0 lead in the Euro 2012 tie in the 119th minute, appeared to have qualified for the semifinals of the competition through Ivan Klasnic’s effort. But as it celebrated what looked to be the winning goal, Turkey stunned its opponents by equalizing just seconds later to force penalties. Modric and Ivan Rakitic missed for Croatia and Turkey keeper Rustu Recber saved the deciding kick from Mladen Petric to earn his side victory. However, on this occasion there was no great escape for Turkey as Croatia held out for a deserved victory. And yet it may have been a completely different story had Turkey, which had barely threatened in the opening half hour, converted its best opportunity of the contest on the half-hour mark. Ozan Tufan found space in the middle and when the cross came in he sent a downward header straight at the goalkeeper when he appeared certain to score. That miss was to prove costly as with four minutes of the first half remaining Croatia struck. The Turkish defense cleared the ball as far
as Modric and the Real Madrid midfielder watched the ball come down before arrowing an unstoppable volley into the far corner. It was a sensational strike from a wonderful player although Volkan Babacan, the Turkish goalkeeper, might have expected to do rather better after allowing the ball to go under his arm Croatia continued to dominate after the interval and came close to moving further ahead when Darijo Srna, the country’s most capped player, smashed a free kick against the crossbar from 20-yards. Srna, the captain, then fired wide from inside the penalty while Marcelo Brozovic sent a fierce volley inches over crossbar as Turkey began to wobble. Croatia, playing with a style and swagger, then hit the woodwork once again -- Ivan Perisic heading against the crossbar from close-range after meeting Mario Mandzukic’s cross. Turkey rarely appeared capable of finding an equalizer, although Vedran Corluka, boasting a large head bandage after suffering a head wound earlier in the contest, was forced into a dramatic late block. This victory puts Croatia top of the table with defending champion Spain set to take on Czech Republic in Toulouse today. Croatia’s next game is against the Czechs on Friday with Turkey taking on Spain later that day. “Luka really deserves to be talked about, especially after this match,” Croatia coach Ante Cacic told a press conference after the game. “It was one of his best matches in Croatia’s history. He was really playing well. He was really our leader.

England, Russia risks Euro disqualification over fan violence Russia and England could be kicked out of the Euro 2016 championship if their supporters are involved in further acts of violence at the tournament, UEFA has warned. UEFA’s executive committee told the football associations of both countries Sunday that their teams could face further sanctions -- including potential disqualification from the tournament -- if their fans were involved in a repeat of the scenes that marred their fixture in Marseille Saturday. UEFA, the governing body of football in Europe, has already opened
disciplinary proceedings against the Russian Football Union over its supporters’ behavior in Marseille. It faces charges of crowd disturbances, racist behavior and setting off fireworks Saturday in the southern French city’s Stade Velodrome. “UEFA expresses its utter disgust for the violent clashes that occurred in the city center of Marseille, and its serious concern for the incidents at the end of the match inside Stade Velodrome,” UEFA said in a statement. “This kind of behavior is totally unacceptable and has no place in
football.” It said a decision on the sanctions would be made “within the next few days,” once evidence had been considered. No action has been taken against England’s Football Association, whose fans were also involved in the clashes on the third straight day of footballrelated violence in the port city. UEFA is responsible for incidents at match venues, but not in surrounding areas. At least 35 people were injured Saturday, four of them seriously, said Mathieu Duroselle, a spokesman for Marseille police. The number included
three officers who suffered slight injuries, he said. Eight people were arrested, including British, Russian and French citizens. The British government said in a statement Sunday that six British nationals were hospitalized and several others had received treatment. “The UK Government is deeply concerned by the violence in Marseille last night, including reports that in some cases England fans were attacked by rival supporters,” it said. “We condemn the violence and urge calm on all sides.”
It said it welcomed UEFA’s launching of an investigation into the violence at the stadium, and had offered to send additional British police to France ahead of England’s next match, against Wales in Lens. FIFA, the sport’s international governing body, also released a statement condemning the violence. The organization said it was “wholly unacceptable to see such shameful scenes around football matches perpetrated by a minority of idiotic troublemakers, who have nothing to do with football and its true fans.”
England fans pelt police with stones in Marseille on Saturday before their match against Russia at the Southern French city. The fans had been involved in clashes with Russian opponents before police intervene and lobbed teargas. The clashes were again witnessed inside the stadium after the match and UEFA has warned the two teams could be eliminated if the clashes continue.
Brazil eliminated from Copa America Soccer heavyweights Brazil have been knocked out of the Copa America for the first time without going past group stages in 29 years after Peru defeated them 1-0, thanks to a controversial goal from Raul Ruidiaz. The goal caused some controversy at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts with the refereeing blunder eventually sending Brazil crashing to a 1-0 defeat against Peru, and out of the tournament. The defeat left Brazil struggling to digest their worst performance in the Copa America since 1987, the last occasion the five-time world champions failed to make it past the group stage. Brazil, needing only a draw to qualify for the quarter-finals as winners of Group B, looked to be on course for a place in the last eight with 15 minutes to go against Peru. But a rare foray into Brazilian territory from Peru ended with Raul Ruidiaz bundling in Andy Polo’s cross from the byline, appearing to use his arm to score. Ruidiaz wheeled away to celebrate and Uruguayan referee Andres Cunha signalled for the goal. Brazil’s players protested furiously, swarming around Cunha in a bid to persuade the official to reverse his decision. The protests appeared to have swayed Cunha, who looked to be frantically checking with the fourth official via his headpiece to determine whether the goal should stand.
Yet after a chaotic delay of around four minutes, with players from both sides surrounding the referee, Cunha ruled the goal should stand. Multiple replays from different angles however showed that Ruidiaz had used his arm to knock the ball into the net past Brazil keeper Alisson. Brazil pressed forward in the final closing minutes in an attempt to find an equaliser that would take them through but it was to no avail. Elias squandered a golden chance from close range in injury time and Brazil’s fate was sealed. Peru will now play Colombia in the quarterfinals after finishing top of Group B. Despite the controversial nature of the result, Brazil coach Dunga is likely to come under renewed pressure after what was a lacklustre tournament. The Brazilians, desperate to begin the road to recovery after their humiliating 7-1 defeat by Germany in the World Cup semi-finals two years ago, never convinced at any point of the group stage. A 0-0 opening draw with Ecuador -- where a refereeing decision which might have given Ecuador a victory went in Brazil’s favour -- was followed by a 7-1 drubbing of Haiti, arguably the weakest team in the tournament. Another drab display against Peru followed on Sunday, with Dunga’s side barely getting a shot on goal in the first-half with the exception of a shot by Gabriel in the 26th minute that was tipped away by Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger celebrates after scoring in injury time against Ukrain last night.
Schweinsteiger seals Germany win over Ukraine Bastian Schweinsteiger came off the bench in stoppage time to score an injury time goal as World champions Germany began their quest for a record fourth European Championship by beating Ukraine 2-0 in Lille. Despite a mercurial performance from Toni Kroos and an early headed goal from Shkodran Mustafi, they were troubled at the back at times though. Jerome Boateng cleared off the line superbly while keeper Manuel Neuer made several good saves before a late scare. Yevhen Konoplyanka threatened for Ukraine but they tired, with Bastian Schweinsteiger adding a late second. The Manchester United midfielder, who has not played since 20 March because of a knee injury, came off the bench in stoppage time and two minutes later scored a sweet half-volley from a swift counter attack. After Poland beat Northern Ireland earlier on Sunday, Germany now top Group C. On Thursday they face the Poles, who beat them in qualifying for Euro 2016. And there were times when they looked vulnerable against Ukraine, who have never previously beaten them in five attempts. Germany could have added to their early lead, which came from a debatable free-kick after Yaroslav Rakitskiy appeared to get the ball when tackling Thomas Muller. Yet Neuer was kept busy in the German goal and Boateng made a brilliant goal-line clearance after he diverted Konoplyanka’s effort towards his own
net. Up front, Mario Gotze was isolated, and had the fewest touches of any player on the pitch. Fellow midfielders Muller and Mesut Ozil were not at their best, although the Arsenal midfielder crossed for Schweinsteiger’s well-taken goal. Joachim Low’s side became more resolute at the back as the game wore on, and there is plenty of time for the team to find top form as the tournament progresses, which is a worrying thought for other teams. Like fellow Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who was influential in Croatia’s victory over Turkey earlier on Sunday, Kroos played like a man full of confidence after winning the Champions League last month. Not only did he boss the game from the start in open play, his set-pieces were also deadly as he curled the ball in superbly for Mustafi to head in after 19 minutes. Another brilliant pass from the former Bayern Munich player should have led to Germany doubling their lead but Sami Khedira’s shot was straight at Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov. The 26-year-old hit the corner of the post and crossbar early in the second half and showed plenty of evidence that his performances will be integral to the success of Germany in France. Ukraine afforded him plenty of space in which to do damage, but other teams will know they must get a lot tighter to him in order to disrupt Germany’s supply line.
