ighty per cent of electronics sold in the country are counterfeit while 34 per cent of medicines stocked in pharmacies are fake, a new survey by the Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA) has revealed. The survey suggested that local manufacturers incur losses of approximately Sh50 billion of income annually. Speaking yesterday during the marking of the annual World Anti-Counterfeiting Day at a Nairobi hotel, acting deputy director of research and awareness at ACA Agnes Karingu said that most contraband goods sold in the country expose Kenyans to serious health risks. “Majority of Kenyans, according to the survey, cannot distinguish between the genuine brands and counterfeits regardless of education levels or age,” she said. Adding that “country loses more than Sh70 billion annually, partly in unpaid taxes” Karingu noted that counterfeit goods occupy 40 per cent of the market share in Kenya, and have affected the health of 56 per cent of their consumers. The survey shows that of the 34 per cent counterfeited medicines, half of these were classified as the most dangerous counterfeited commodities. It further revealed that cosmetics majorly used by women were the third most counterfeited goods at 30 per cent, followed by batteries at 28.9 per cent. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

JSC rule out activists in race to find new CJ The next Kenya Chief Justice will not be an activist, but one who will be able to tame cartels, Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has said. JSC officials today told Citizen TV that due to vast experience and lessons learnt from hiring of the Chief Justice and the Deputy Chief Justice in the past, they are looking for someone who will bring the entire team together and with a high record of performance who will be easily accepted by peers. “We are looking for a CJ who will not be an activist but still not one who will sit down and allow cartels to thrive,” JSC Vice-Chairperson Margaret Kobia said. With Chief Justice Willy Mutunga having retired from his role two weeks ago, Prof Kobia will now chair the JSC sittings that will interview possible successors to Dr Mutunga. Dr Mutunga had been accused by his peers of playing out to activism in the judiciary and benefiting from the bandit’ money in the government after telling a Dutch newspaper early this year that Kenyans are at war with mafia-style cartels run by political bosses and corrupt businesspeople-a mafia-style criminals similar to Al Capone’s mob of the 1920s America, and that this cartel “collects millions every day”. “I hope you will dedicate the early chapters of the book to how you transitioned from rights activist to the position of Chief Justice. the Judiciary, Kobia said that, just like the entire public service, the JSC is struggling to deal with corruption so that the organ becomes more credible and earns the acceptance and embrace of all Kenyans. “We have also been sued by judicial officers who have been fired for being involved in corruption. The entire public service is struggling to deal with corruption. We cannot run away from that,” Kobia said arguing that cartels come in because they find a weakness. JSC Secretary and Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi, urged Kenyans not to be worried that the JSC has not received any applications for the next CJ and DCJ, stating they expect to get most of the applications in the last days. According to Amadi, the commission has put up structures to help in hiring the next Judiciary boss, including the participation of the public in the process. “The role of the public will be very critical in the hiring process of the next CJ,” Ms Amadi said. “The constitution requires that we portray the face of Kenya. We cannot have the three arms of government headed by people from the same community but competence is key,” she said adding that they are focused on getting the right CJ regardless of the political perceptions. “The JSC is very aware that there will be political pressure but we will not give in,” she asserted.

The rest are drinks (27.7 per cent), food (21.5 per cent), cigarettes (13.3 per cent), clothing (11.7 per cent), seeds (9.4 per cent), shoe polish (7.8 per cent), stationery (2.7 per cent), fat (1.2 per cent) and soap (0.4 per cent). The state agency said the survey that they commissioned early this year, established the fabricating cartels use normal supply chains delivering with ease the counterfeits to formal retailers such as supermarkets and pharmacies which are popular with Kenyans. “Suppliers of these fake commodities use the normal supply chain to reach their consumers. While the reinforcement agencies try their level best to fight this vice, the biggest challenge remains to be inadequate tools of detection,” explained Mrs
Karingu. However, she lamented and blamed laxity on the part of enforcing agents and at the same time admitting the level of willingness by law enforcement agencies to fight counterfeits is very low, adding that some of the agencies had been infiltrated by corrupt officers. “Technological advancement, the law of greed and increased international trade are some of the greatest drivers of counterfeits and they make it hard to detect the existence of these commodities in the market,” she noted. In past, ACA has been piling pressure on police officers to stop the laxity along the border and crack down contraband smuggled through Malaba and Busia border posts. hillary_x254

Security tightened at airports after bomb attacks in Turkey
Security has been heightened at all airports in the country following last night’s terror attack in Turkey’s largest airport. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said they have increased surveillance also in other areas after the Istanbul airport bombing that killed 36 people and wounded 147 others. “We have been on heightened alertness that includes our aviation infrastructure,” Boinnet said on telephone. “Vigilance stepped up following the Istanbul attack.” President Uhuru Kenyatta said Kenya stands in solidarity with Turkey following the airport bombing. “I offer words of comfort to
my brother President Erdogan (Recep Tayyip) and the people of Turkey. Kenya stands in solidarity with,” President Kenyatta said. Kenya has been a victim of terror attacks, the latest having occurred at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi in September 2013 when 67 people, including attackers were killed and hundreds more wounded. In April 2015, 148 people— mainly students—were killed when Al Shabaab terrorists stormed Garissa University College, leaving 79 others with injuries. It was the second worst attack in the country after the 1998 US Embassy bombing that left 213 people dead. www.capitalfm.co.ke MORE ON THIS STORY
Kidero seeks senators help to recover billions owed by OP
The National Government including the Office of the President and that of the Deputy President owes Nairobi City County Sh69 billion on land rates and parking. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero told the Senate Public Accounts Committee that despite a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta two years ago, the matter has not been resolved. “We had meeting with the President Uhuru Kenyatta two years and we can produce minutes of the meeting to that effect, President Kenyatta directed the Cabinet Secretary for Treasury to pay all our outstanding dues but to date nothing has happened,” Kidero said. Kidero said parking areas around the Office of the President, Deputy President along Harambee Avenue, Jogoo House, and Treasury belong to the Nairobi City County and therefore ought to be paid for. Other areas that also owe City Hall include parking areas around Central Bank, Kenya Revenue Authority and that of the ministry of Foreign Affairs. “These facilities belong to the County Government and should be paid for whenever used but that has not been the case,” Kidero said adding the money has accrued for over ten years. Committee chairman Anyang’ Nyong’o urged the County Government to furnish with the minutes of the meeting with the President so as follow up the matter. “This is serious if for two years the President Directive has not been adhered to then you should help us with the minutes so as to make arrangements on how to help the @sam_x254 county government,” Nyong’o said.

Petitioner: Why IEBC commissioners must go
A petitioner seeking to have the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners sent home over incompetence and lack of integrity yesterday told a joint parliamentary committee how the electoral team bungled the 2013 General Election. Barasa Nyukuri from Bungoma County told the committee that a vicious supremacy battle between the current chairman Issac Hassan and former CEO James Oswago led to the commissioner performing dismally in the last polls. Appearing before the Justice and Legal Affairs and the Constitution Implementation Oversight committees yesterday, Nyukuri said the electoral body failed to prepare an accurate voter register and also clean it (register). “There are many instances where dead people voted and others voted twice that is a clear manifestation of incompetence and fraud on the poll team and not the voters and therefore this country cannot risk another General Election with the same team,” Nyukuri said in his presentation yesterday. Nyukuri enumerated to committee how supremacy battle between Oswago and Hassan hindered many things from happening in the commission including purchase of technology used for the last poll. Many at times
Nyukuri said Hassan would call Chief Of Staff and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua on the affairs of IEBC. “IEBC is supposed to be independent but that is not the case, I have emails exchanges between Hassan and Kinyua on the major decisions that were made at electoral body,” Nyukuri said. He said that in the run up to the 2013 elections, there were two camps within the commission; those supporting Oswago and those supporting Hassan. The division Nyukuri said led to an internal war that led to the bungled elections. “These two people were always competing and that’s why the commission worked hard to sack Oswago through the numerous court battle,” Nyukuri said. The petitioner said he is aware of many inside wars pitting the commissioners and Hassan in the run up the 2013 elections but could not disclose the information in the presence of journalists. “In the meetings the commissioners always differed with Hassan but the chairman always had his way, I can tell this committee more but in the absence of the media,” Nyukuri said. When asked his motive behind sending the current commissioners pack-

ing, Nyukuri said he has no ill motive but just wanted a credible poll team to oversee the next elections. “I do not belong to any political party, I’m not in Cord or Jubilee, I’m a concerned Kenyan who wants the best for this country,” Nyukuri said. He said he started raising the credibility question of the current commissioners in 2011
Ministry proposes Sh20 million fine or 20 years in jail for cybercrime offenders Kenyans found guilty of cybercrime offences could face a 20-year jail term or a fine of Sh20 million if the proposals in a new Bill are adopted by Parliament. The Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology is seeking to tighten the laws by slapping heftier penalties on offenders. The Computer and Cybercrimes Bill, 2016 stipulates a maximum of 20 year imprisonment or a Sh20 million penalty or both for corresponding offences outlined in the Bill. Speaking during a media briefing ahead of the launch of the Bill next week, ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru said the Bill was necessitated by a lack of a legal framework currently to prosecute offences committed on online platforms. “The government has designated this Bill as a priority Bill given its positive obligation to protect individuals against crime including through criminal justice measures,” Mucheru said. Mucheru noted that the country’s current laws have not moved in pace with the growth of the ICT sector and the Bill seeks to address this anomaly. “The current laws that are in existence predate innovations including M-Pesa and other money transfer services,” he said. The ICT CS said that the current draft is all-inclusive and covers and protects all aspects of digital life. Under the current Kenya Information and Communications Act 2013, the maximum penalty one guilty of committing cybercrimes can face is a 10-year jail term and a Sh10 million fine or both. Offences stipulated in the Bill include: cyber bulling, cyber stalking, computer fraud, unauthorized access, access with intent to commit further offences, offences involving protected computer systems and child pornography. Mucheru said that the current penalties needed to be reinforced to make it deterrent for potential cybercriminals. He

challenged Kenya to conform to other global legal structures that fine individuals with life imprisonments for similar offences. On the issue of individuals committing the cybercrimes outside Kenya’s jurisdiction, Mucheru said that the country was in liaison with other international partners to prosecute the criminals either in the countries the crimes were committed or in Kenya. “Under the Budapest Convention, Kenya is in partnership with other foreign nations to ensure prosecution in their countries or if need be extradition to Kenya to face charges under our law,” Mucheru said. The Bill was drafted by an inter-agency committee including the Director of Public Prosecutions, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the National Intelligence Service among others. Public consultations will be sought to enhance the draft before a final Bill is submitted to the National Assembly to be enacted into law.
but was ignored. He also told the committee that he had written to the Ethics and Anti-corruption commission in August 2011 about the chicken gate scandal but the authority did not take any action. Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chairman Samuel Chepkonga said the petitioner appears to be clear in his
case and has evidence. “The petitioner has argued his case very well, he has evidence and as a committee will look at it before moving forward,” he said. Chepkonga assured the petitioner that the joint committee will look at his petition competently without any bias. The joint committee is also set to meet the IEBC commissioners.
Kenya to train 3,000 youth in UNCTAD member states
Kenya will send 3,000 youth to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) member states if its proposal is adopted in the upcoming UNCTAD summit. While addressing the media at a Nairobi hotel, Planning and National Statistics PS Torome Saitoti (pictured below) said that the country is targeting to equip young entrepreneurs with skills from the developed economies. Kenya will also be seeking to cement its position as the leading economic hub in the region aimed at boosting its investment opportunities. “We shall deliberate with other players during the conference to have more than 3,000 young entrepreneurs getting a chance to learn from the developed economies on the emerging markets and investment opportunities,” Mr Torome stated. On exports, Kenya will be eyeing increase trade with the member states the current 28 per cent to 50 per cent especially on horticulture products. Torome said his ministry will be bargaining on President Uhuru’s efforts to create bilateral rela-
tions with several economies across the globe to have the proposal adopted. “We shall build on the Presidents efforts to enhance bilateral relations with different states to push for our agenda,” added Torome. President Uhuru Kenyatta has been making foreign trips to different states with his main agenda focused on enhancing trade and investment relations. On his latest trips to Belgium and Botswana, he urged his hosts to review their rules to enable Kenyan professionals and investors to engage in more business with the two countries. Kenya will for the second time be hosting the high-level ministerial UNCTAD summit in mid-July after Peru withdrew from the race. It hosted the conference in 1976. The conference comes as the country works to support a trade and investment rising from the fears of terror attack and the unstable shilling Kenya and several states have had more than 50 years of human capital exchange in several industries .

Tanzania helium discovery a ‘game-changer’ Scientists have discovered a large helium gas field in Tanzania. With world supplies running out, the find is a “game-changer”, say geologists at UK universities Durham and Oxford say. Helium is used in hospitals in MRI scanners as well as in spacecraft, telescopes and radiation monitors. Until now, the precious gas has been discovered only in small quantities during oil and gas drilling. Using a new exploration approach, researchers found large quantities of helium within the Tanzanian East African Rift Valley. They say resources in just one part of the Rift valley are enough to fill more than a million medical MRI scanners. Prof Chris Ballentine, of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford, said: “This is a game-changer for the future security of society’s helium needs and similar finds in the future may not be far away.” And colleague Dr Pete Barry added: ‘We can apply this same strategy to other parts of the world with a similar
geological history to find new helium resources. “ Helium is formed by the slow and steady radioactive decay of terrestrial rock. However, global supplies are running low, with warnings that supplies cannot be guaranteed in the long term. Prof Jon Gluyas, of the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University, who collaborated on the project, said the price of helium had gone up 500% in the last 15 years. “Helium is the second most abundant element in the Universe but it’s exceedingly rare on Earth,” Prof Gluyas told BBC News. “Moreover, any helium that you do find if you’re not careful, will escape, just like a party balloon it rises and rises in the atmosphere and eventually escapes the Earth’s gravity altogether. “It’s used in a whole array of key instrumentation, particularly medical MRI scanning and so on, and so we have to keep finding more.” The researchers say volcanic activity in the Rift Valley releases helium buried
in ancient rocks, which rises up and becomes trapped in shallower gas fields. The amount of helium is estimated at more than 54 billion cubic feet - which
could potentially meet global demand for several years. The next step is to find the best place to drill to exploit the gas and bring it to the surface.

36 killed in suicide bomb attacks at Turkey airport

A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk international airport has killed 36 people and injured more than 140, officials say. Three attackers opened fire near an entry point to the terminal late yesterday and blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs suggested the so-called Islamic State was behind the attack. Recent bombings have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists. Yesterday’s attack looked like a major coordinated assault, correspondents say. Ataturk airport was long seen as a vulnerable target, the correspondents added. There are X-ray scanners at the entrance to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited. Pictures from the airport terminal showed bodies covered in sheets, with glass and abandoned luggage littering the building. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups. “The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world,” he said. The US called the attack “heinous”, saying America remained “steadfast in our support for Turkey”. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “We grieve for the victims. We stand by Turkey”. He also said foreigners were likely to be among the dead. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag put the number of injured at 147.
Desperate relatives of those missing later gathered outside a local hospital where many victims were taken. Some expressed anger about the lack of information. Meanwhile, footage has emerged on social media that appears to show a police officer shooting one of the attackers, who detonates a suicide belt as he is lying injured on the ground. Flights in and out of the airport were suspended after the attack. The US Federal Aviation Administration initially grounded all services between the US and Istanbul but the stoppage was later lifted. Some flights have now resumed at the airport. Eyewitness Paul Roos told the Associated Press news agency that he was due to fly home to South Africa when the attackers struck. “We came up from the arrivals to the departures, up the escalator when we heard these shots going off,” he said. “There was this guy going roaming around, he was dressed in black and he had a handgun.” Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium whose capital city was targeted by bombers in March, tweeted from the EU summit in Brussels: “Our thoughts are with the victims of the attacks at Istanbul’s airport. We condemn these atrocious acts of violence.” #Pray for Turkey began trending on Twitter after the attack. In December, a blast on the tarmac at a different Istanbul airport, Sabiha Gokcen, killed a cleaner. That attack was claimed by a Kurdish group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK).

EU in first meeting without UK after Brexit WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2016
European Union leaders are to begin the second day of their summit in Brussels, but without the UK after it last week voted to leave the bloc. Yesterday, British PM David Cameron told the other 27 leaders that trade and security cooperation would be vital whatever the future links. Germany’s Angela Merkel urged the EU to “respect the result” of the UK vote. But she and other leaders renewed their call for Britain to set out plans for leaving as soon as possible. They insist there can be no negotiation before the UK has formally invoked Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which will trigger the withdrawal talks. Yesterday’s meeting in Brussels was Mr Cameron’s final EU summit, after he announced his intention to stand down by October. The 27 other leaders were to gather in the Belgian capital to discuss the future without the UK, something
that has not happened for more than 40 years. Correspondents in Brussels say there will be calls for unity and for reform, and promises will need to be put into practice quickly because the UK referendum has shaken Europe to the core. On Tuesday, Mr Cameron said the rest of the EU wanted to have the “closest possible” relationship with the UK after Brexit. But he said immigration was a “great concern” among UK voters and squaring this with access to the EU single market would be a “huge challenge”. In Brussels, German politicians insisted the UK cannot “cherrypick” aspects of the EU. Mrs Merkel stressed that the UK must accept free movement if it wanted to retain access to the single market. “We all regretted the result and made clear that the legal procedure must be that the UK invokes Article 50,” she said. “Mr Cameron
said he would hand it over to the new government to do. We all agreed that before that point, there can be no formal or informal negotiations.” She added: “We can see no way to turn this around. It’s not a time for wishful thinking, but of contemplating the reality.” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the UK did not have “months to meditate” on activating Article 50. “If someone from the Remain camp will become British prime minister, this has to be done in two weeks after his appointment,” he said. “If the next British PM is coming from the Leave campaign, it should be done the day after his appointment.” Mr Cameron told reporters the discussions had been “calm, constructive and purposeful”. He said there was “universal respect” for the UK’s decision to leave despite a “tone of sadness and regret”.

AfDB unveils ten-year strategy to make region global food basket The African Development Bank (AfDB) has unveiled a ten-year strategy that seeks to transform agriculture in Africa in a bid to achieve food security and create jobs. Speaking in Nairobi yesterday, Gabriel Negatu the regional Director for the AfDB said the organisation plans to make Africa a food exporter by 2025. “The implementation of this strategy will see Africa as a game changer in efforts to eradicate hunger, malnutrition and poverty,” said Negatu. The initative, dubbed the Feed Africa strategy for agricultural transformation in Africa 2016202,5 makes a strong case for reversing the situation of a continent that spends Sh3.585 trillion (US $35.4 billion) on food imports annually despite being home to 65 per cent of the world’s undeveloped arable land. “Transforming Africa’s agriculture sector is key to achieving economic growth, food security and better incomes for rural communities,” said Negatu. He said Kenya’s economy is growing faster than anticipated, adding that women and the youth will reap immensely from the implementation of the strategy. An estimated (40.516 trillion) $400 billion will be used in the next decade to hasten the strategy,
the sum will be mobilized from governments, private sector and multilateral donors. “There is a strategic value of investing in Africa since it not only contributes immensely to the continent’s economies but has capacity to convert it into an industrial hub,” said Negatu. Statistics from AfDB shows that 60 per cent of Africa’s population relies on agriculture for their livelihood. Negatu added that the implementation of the AfDB strategy will offer a lasting solution to challenges facing the agriculture sector in Africa, including climate change, dysfunctional value chains and limited access to finance and technology. Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said farmers need to have more credits and loans to enable them improve on their farming ways. He also added that Kenya needs to brand its crops that highly sell in the European countries Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru added that Kenya needs to embark on developing agricultural technology to make agriculture more appealing to the youth. “We need to make agriculture more exciting by using the technology we have,” said Mucheru. @Lenah_x254

Kenyans on lastminute rush to file annual tax returns ahead of deadline A report from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has revealed that by yesterday, over 1.2 million Kenyans had filed their annual returns through the iTax system. According to the report, the system has been receiving approximately 70, 000 returns daily and the number is expected to go up as taxpayers make efforts to meet the deadline set for tomorrow. The iTax System gives taxpayers the luxury of filing returns from the comfort of their homes or offices at any hour of day or night. The tax body has in the last three months trained over 40, 000 Kenyans on how to file their tax returns online and set up 21 iTax Support Centres. With a presence in 37 Huduma Centres across the country, three more centres are set to be opened up this week in the Central Region. In a bid to support taxpayers in meeting their deadline of June 30, KRA has for the past weeks been reaching out to taxpayers through on ground activations countrywide and advertisements in the media.During the sensitization programs, KRA officers are deployed on the ground to assist taxpayers who may be facing challenges in filing their returns. The Authority has urged taxpayers to seek assistance at the iTax Support centres across the country, if they have challenges in filing returns. The iTax support centres countrywide have also been opened for extended hours to the public ahead of the deadline. The centres are now open Mondays to Fridays from 7am. to 7:p.m., Saturday from 8am to 5pm. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. @kevin_x254
Maersk Oil to focus on Kenya, North Sea operations after losing Qatar contract Danish oil and gas company Maersk Oil will now shift focus to building on its operations in the North Sea and in Kenya after losing a contract to operate Qatar’s largest offshore oilfield. France’s oil and gas company Total won a 30 per cent stake in a new 25-year contract to operate the Al-Shaheen oilfield, a blow to Maersk, which has been operating the oilfield since 1992. Maersk Oil is a Danish oil and gas company owned by the A. P. MollerMaersk Group. The company was established in 1962 when Maersk Group was awarded a concession for oil and gas exploration and production in the Danish sector of the North Sea. In 1986, Maersk Oil took over the operation of the Dansk Undergrunds Consortium’s fields in the Danish section of the North Sea. “Going forward it gives us clarity and gives us a good opportunity to focus on building on our material business in
the North Sea, and in Kenya and other areas,” the head of Maersk Oil Jakob Thomasen said. Since beginning operations in Kenya, Maersk Oil has acquired licences and exploration acreage in the Turkana region of northern Kenya comprising a 25 per cent interest in exploration licence10BB in partnership with Tullow Oil (operator, 50 per cent) and Africa Oil (25 per cent), 25 per cent interest in exploration license 10BA in partnership with Tullow Oil (operator, 50 per cent) and Africa Oil (25 per cent). The firm also holds a 25 per cent interest in exploration license 13T in Kenya with Tullow Oil (operator, 50 per cent) and Africa Oil (25 per cent) “This investment adds to an already attractive non-operated onshore portfolio for Maersk Oil that includes our 25 year presence in Algeria. This is an important driver of long term value,” said the Maersk Oil CEO. The
cornerstone of Maersk Oil’s business has been turning challenging oil fields into commercial successes. Maersk Oil focuses on new technologies to create value for partners and host governments. The acreage is connected to license agreements in Ethiopia, together covering an area of 100,000 square kilometetres, including eight recent oil discoveries, with ongoing exploration and appraisal activities. The agreement is subject to relevant government approvals. Maersk Oil boasts of a production of 550,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Production comes from Denmark, the UK, Qatar, Kazakhstan, the US Gulf of Mexico, Algeria and Brazil. Exploration activities are on-going in Angola, Norway, Greenland, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and in the producing countries. @kevin_x254

Algeria looks to Kenya to uplift, diversify her country’s tourism
Algeria is seeking to diversify her economy to Tourism and is interested in learning from Kenya, envoys from the North African country have confirmed. Algeria Ambassador to Kenya Salah Francis El Hamdi paid Kenya’s Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala a courtesy visit yesterday. The two discussed ways through which both countries could benefit from further developing their tourism sectors. Their meeting comes just after a forum that was held in Mombasa, aimed at reinvigorating the industry. The event, dubbed the Kenya Association of Hotel-keepers and Caterers Symposium, was graced by sector stakeholders, including Tourism Principal Secretary Fatuma hirsi The PS said that the Ministry of Tourism was making strides in promoting Kenya and reinstating the country as one of the continent’s leading leisure and travel destinations. “We are listening to the Tourism sector,” Hirsi said. Speaking at the Symposium, Hirsi added that Mombasa was named the best Beach Destination in Africa for 2016. Meanwhile, Balala has this week been meeting with tourism stakeholders, envoys and Ambassadors as his Ministry seeks to deepen relations with a host of other countries. The CS met with Narok County Governor Samuel Ole Tunai this morning. Details of their meeting are yet to be disclosed. Oman Ambassador to Kenya Saleh Sulaiman Al-Harthi also paid Balala
High labour costs threaten to wilt tea farming sector Rising labour costs are hampering the country’s tea farming sector and could discourage investments and hurt the economy, the Kenya Tea Growers Association (KTGA) has warned. KTGA said on Wednesday that labour costs, which represent about half of the cost of production for its members, were set to rise in line with a labour court ruling earlier this month, increasing production costs by another 9 percent amid a decline in tea prices. The group added that such wage increases clearly jeopardise the tea industry’s future sustainability. The announcement comes at a time when the government is eliminating and cutting numerous taxes and levies on the industry to help Kenyan tea become more competitive in global markets.

KenGen to add 2.5 GW to the national grid by 2027
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has announced plans to add some 2.5 Gigawatts (GW) of clean, affordable and environmentallyfriendly energy to the national grid over the next 10 years. KenGen Chairman Joshua Choge says the move is in line with country’s vision 2030 initiative, where Kenya seeks to produce over 5GW. The move would cost the firm close to Sh1 trillion. Choge has long sought to free the government from the yoke of sovereign guarantees by identifying other financing options such as the public infrastructure bond, funding projects and most recently, an ongoing Rights Issue. He says the firm is currently in a move to raise Sh28.8 billion through a Rights Issue with the government already taking up three million shares valued at Sh20.2 billion. Through the move, KenGen is issuing a total of 4.4 billon shares, representing an entitlement ratio of two for every one share held, at a price of Sh 6.55 where listing and commencement of trading of new shares at the NSE will begin on July 6, 2016. With the additional capital, KenGen plans to commission an additional installed capacity of about 720

Megawatts (MW) mainly from affordable, clean and environmental friendly sources. At the moment, the power generator’s installed capacity is 1,618MW (1.6GW). Among the projects lined up is a drilling programme for a 140MW plant dubbed Olkaria VII, which is scheduled for delivery by 2020. The company also expects to complete 25MW of an early generation geothermal wellhead project by June 2016, bringing the total capacity on
wellhead generation to 75MW. Meanwhile, two projects, dubbed 140MW Olkaria V and 80MW Meru Wind phase I, are expected to come on stream in 2018 and have already attracted funding from a number of partners, including the French Development Agency (AFD). “I must admit that our appetite has been whetted and we cannot wait to power up another 430MW in the next three years, we want to assure the nation that
KenGen is up to the task and using avenues such as this to deliver that promise,” Choge said. “One of the government’s primary policy objectives is cost reduction, and this was one of the driving forces behind the plan to lower the electricity tariffs by 2017. We must steadily identify efficiencies and wastes across the generation, transmission and distribution channels to enable us lower electricity tariffs,” he stated. @enock_x254
The African Elephant Coalition (AEC), an organisation comprising 29 African countries has called on the world to join them in saving the continent’s elephants. The group agreed to implement a protocol known as the Montreux Manifesto to launch social media campaigns dubbed ‘#WorthMoreAlive, #EndIvoryTrade and #Vote4Elephants’. The move is aimed at garnering support for their five-part package to put an end to the ivory trade and afford elephants the highest protection under international law. The AEC’s package consisting of five proposals is designed to reverse a poaching crisis. The proposals would ban international trade in ivory by listing all elephants, close domestic ivory markets around the world, encourage better management of ivory stockpiles and where possible, ensure their destruction.

DT Dobie to offer range of two and four-wheel drive transporter pick-ups WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2016
Vehicle distributor DT Dobie will now offer a range of 2 and 4 wheel drive single and double cab transporter pickups the motor company has confirmed. According to the distributor, these long wheel base vehicles are equipped with reinforced suspensions for rough road use and have an aluminium underside guard for engines and transmissions. The Transporter pick-ups are among the range of 17 different Volkswagen models available from DT Dobie. All VWs sold by the company have service intervals of 7500 kilometers and carry a
2-year unlimited mileage warranties. These are issued by DT Dobie which is the only organization in Kenya authorized to issue Volkswagen warranties. The distributor explained in a statement that a two-litre turbo diesel engine mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox gives owners good fuel consumption combined with the capability of carrying loads of up to 1,224 kilos over long distances and hilly terrain. In addition to the tailgate the sides of the pick-up are hinged to provide quick loading for goods,
building materials and machinery. This feature has special appeal for construction companies, farmers and transporters making deliveries to shops and warehouses. “The comfortable cabin of both the single and double cab pick-ups has two seats for passengers located beside the driver. The double cab also features a back seat for three passengers. The generous seating space means that workers can be carried safely instead of riding on the back of the pick-up,” the company said in its statement.
The Volkswagen pick-ups are loaded with safety features including front and rear ventilated disc brakes with ABS (anti-locking brake system) and EBD (electronic brake force distribution). There is also an electronic stability program (ESP) with brake assist, driver’s airbag and hill hold control. The vehicle company officially became a distributor for Volkswagen range of cars in Kenya in 2014. At the time, DT Dobie which is one of the Kenyan subsidiaries of CFAO Automotive, the largest automobile
network in Africa, said that the addition was well-received since Volkswagen has a reputation for good build quality, reliability and long life. “This will enhance our Company’s reputation for selling and servicing top cars which are renowned for their market leadership,” DT Dobie Managing Director, Zarak Khan said in regard to the earlier announcement. @Dennis_x254

ereal bars or breakfast bars have a fair amount of myth and legend that follows them. Let us attempt to debunk them. Their convenience has led to a rise in popularity in the breakfast bar. No preparation necessary, they come all ready to consume. In context, that is 4 teaspoons of sugar in a bar. And it’s not just sugar that’s is to blame. It would be as apparent from first impressions but many breakfast bars are loaded with saturated fats. Some come topped with chocolate chips which are definitely not the healthiest option available in the

HOLDER FOR CHARGING CELL PHONE
ell phones have become a daily necessity and charging them almost like oxygen. How about making your own accessories? What you need: A medium size plastic bottle-preferably a lotion bottle, scalpel and sharp knife. The process: Begin by cutting out the plastic bottle halfway using the knife only on one of its walls. On the remaining wall, make small openings to resemble an electric socket using the
scalpel. This is best done by placing the bottle against an actual socket so as to get the dimensions right. Once this step is done, your phone holder is ready. You only have to plug in your charger through the cut out openings into the wall socket and place your phone inside the container that now looks like a basket. The charger provides support for the phone holder so you don’t have to drill it into the wall. @mercyx254

The star studded affair that was hosted by comedian Dr. Ofweneke and radio BAHATI personality Kalekye Mumo saw attendance by celebrities among them comedians, entertainers, secular and gospel music artistes. Notably missing at the event though was Bahati’s ‘frenemy’ Willy Paul who was invited but could not make it. Zico blames FKF for team’s ban from GOtv Cup tourney Posta Rangers head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has faulted Football Kenya Federation after the body governing the sport in the country disqualified his club from GOtv Shield competition citing breach of transfer rules. The club was disqualified after fielding John Nairuki, a new signing from Ulinzi stars who is said to have been ineligible for the match at the time. The rule is in line with FKF’s new guidelines on player transfers and registrations that came into force on June 1, 2016. Nairuka who was making his debut for Rangers went on to score a double as Zico’s side beat minnows TimSales FC Kericho 4-1 at the Kericho Green Stadium last weekend. “The federations wrote to us saying we did not follow the rules. That is not honest from them. The player was cleared to play since we followed all the rules in place. As a matter of fact they failed to brief us on the new guidelines that came into force at the start of the month,” Zico said. In a letter addressed to the club’s chairman John Tanui, FKF claim Posta Rangers failed to adhere to Rule 8.2 that requires clubs registering players submit to the federation secretariat the player (s) form and contract signed between the club and the player.

“For now there is nothing we can do but accept the punishment which should have been avoided with prior communications,” he concluded. Fifth placed Posta will travel to Kinoru
stadium in Meru to play league leaders Tusker FC on Saturday in their first fixtures of the second leg of the Sportpesa Premier League. @amos_x254
ASEC Mimosas stun Al Ahly in CAF Champions League Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas secured a valuable away win over newly crowned Egyptian champions Al Ahly in the group stage of the African Champions League. The Ivorians, who like Ahly had lost their first game of the group stage, secured a 2-1 win in Alexandria where the Cairo club are playing their continental games. Goals from Yannick Zakri and Armand Nianke gave them the victory. Ahly had regained the league title, which they lost to rivals Zamalek last season, with a win at Ismaili on Sunday. Ahly have been African champions a record eight times, most recently in 2013 when they defeated South African opponents Orlando Pirates 3-1 over two legs. Asec can boast of just one Champions League title, beating Zimbabwe’s Dynamos 4-2 overall in 1998. A brace from Ghanaian John Antwi could not prevent Ahly losing 3-2 away to Zesco United of Zambia earlier this month. Asec lost 1-0 at home to Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, who eliminated defending champions TP Mazembe of the DR Congo. Wydad host Zesco tonight in a match that is set to finish around midnight owing to the Muslim holy month of
Ramadan, during which eating and drinking is forbidden from dawn to dusk. Footballers can be excused, but most observe the fast, leading to late kickoffs of CAF matches in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt. Zesco have been the surprise side of the 2016 competition, winning five of six qualifiers before a Cletus Chama brace helped upset Ahly. Chama and DR Congo-born Idris Mbombo have scored four continental goals each while Wydad sharpshooter Reda Hajhouj has notched six. The top-scorer so far this season is Mfon Udoh of Nigerian club Enyimba, who are in South Africa to face Mamelodi Sundowns today. It is the only Group B fixture this week after Algerian side Entente Setif were disqualified last week due to crowd problems. Sundowns won 2-0 at Setif only for the match to be declared “null and void” because of a pitch invasion by fans. The South African champions will be without their captain Ramahlwe Mphhahlele after he signed for their local rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Monday. Enyimba were surprise 1-0 losers at home to Zamalek of Egypt, who have a rest day for this round of matches.

Don’t quit now, Maradona pleads with Messi Lionel Messi has been urged to reconsider his international retirement by Argentina legend Diego Maradona and the country’s president. The forward, 29, quit after missing in a penalty shootout as Argentina were beaten by Chile in the Copa America - a fourth major final loss in nine years. “Those saying he should quit don’t want us to see what a disaster Argentinean football has become,” Maradona told La Nacion newspaper. “Messi must go on.” Maradona, who captained Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and managed the team at the 2010 World Cup, added: “Messi has to stay because he will reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia in conditions to become world champion. “The lads have to be supported more to help him take the team forward.” Messi said after Sunday’s defeat that for him, the national team was “over” and that “it hurts not to be a champion”. Argentine President Mauricio Macri said he called Messi to tell him “how proud he feels of the national team’s performance and asked him not to listen to the criticism”. He added he hopes to meet the player
next week and convince him to return to the national team. “The truth is that it’s good fortune, a joy, a gift from God to have the best player in the world in a country like ours that is so football-crazy,” added Macri. Messi has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with his club, Spanish side Barcelona. But his only major international honour is Olympic gold at the 2008 Games. Defeat on Sunday was the second time in two years Argentina have lost the Copa America final to Chile on penalties, while they were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. Messi, who was been awarded the Ballon d’Or five times, was also on the losing side against Brazil in the 2007 Copa America final. Argentina are already six games into their qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup. They are third in the table, two points behind leaders Uruguay. The top four teams progress to the finals in Russia, while the team finishing fifth qualifies for a twolegged play-off against the best team from Oceania.

‘Three Lions left with major bridge to repair’ England’s 2-1 loss to Iceland and exit from Euro 2016 will cause longer-term “damage” to the team, Roy Hodgson has admitted. And Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn said it is now “imperative” to find out why England are “brittle” at tournaments. Hodgson, who resigned after Monday’s game, repeatedly questioned why he had to attend a news conference yesterday But he said: “One particularly bad game has caused a lot of damage to me personally and the team going forward.” Hodgson, 68, added: “We have a major bridge to repair - had we played better last night that might not need repairing.” England won just one of their four games at the tournament in France, qualifying second from their group behind Wales to reach the last 16, where they suffered the humiliating defeat by a nation with a population of just 330,000. Hodgson said there were no “magic answers” to explain England’s performance at the European Championship, where they also drew with Russia and Slovakia and beat Wales with a last-minute winner. Glenn did not rule out appointing a foreign manager as Hodgson’s successor, adding: “We are looking for the best person, not necessarily the best Englishman.” But he said the key thing to address was England’s regular failure, which has seen them reach only three semi-finals at a major tournament since they won the 1966 World Cup as hosts.
“We need to punch our weight in tournaments in a way that we have not done in 50 years. When we get to the business end of a tournament, England seem brittle and we need to understand why that is,” he said. Hodgson read a statement to announce his resignation after the Iceland game which he felt was “sufficient” - and four times during yesterday’s news conference he said he should not need to face the media again. “I am still a little bit unsure what I’m doing here,” said the former Fulham, West Brom and Liverpool boss. “I suppose someone has to stand and take the slings and arrows.” But he defending his appearance saying he had not been forced to do it. “I wasn’t forced to come. I was anxious to make certain no-one in this room can say I was worried to face the media.” Hodgson faced heavy criticism following the goalless draw against Slovakia for making six changes to the side that had beaten Wales, despite knowing a victory would mean England topped the group. He was also criticised for the tactic of having Tottenham striker Harry Kane take corners during the tournament and starting Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling against Iceland. During Tuesday’s news conference, England captain Wayne Rooney released a statement saying reports the players had lost faith in Hodgson are “completely untrue”. When asked about the reports, Hodgson added: “If it was true, they disguised it very well from the players and coaching staff.”
