Drama as MP is arrested on the street over hate talk

here was drama early today outside Nation Center along Kimathi Street in Nairobi, as Flying Squad officers pounced on Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

Junet is among four Cord lawmakers

who the police wanted to arrest over hate speech. And today morning, Flying Squad officers seized Junet outside Nation Centre, moments after leaving a live interview with NTV. Mr Mohamed was surrounded by Flying

Squad police officers who had been waiting for him outside the building since 7.30am. The officers were led by squad head Said Kiprotich.

The lawmaker had been invited to NTV for a discussion on hate speech.

But his arrest was never short of drama as his colleagues James Orengo (Siaya Senator) and Peter Kaluma (Homabay Town) engaged the officers in a scuffle.

I’m not running away from cartels, says CJ Mutunga TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 2016

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has moved to dispel information that his early retirement is due to the powerful cartel in the Judiciary.

Mutunga said he is not afraid of the cartels whom he admitted are in the Judiciary but was leaving early in order to give the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) time to recruit his successor.

“I am not afraid of cartel neither I’m running away from them. I’m just admitting that they are there in the Judiciary like we all know,” Mutunga said during his last public address at Korogocho slums.

“I just want to go home and reflect then tell you what happens in your institutions,” Mutunga told members of the public who turned up for the event.

The Chief Justice said his exit at the Judiciary does not mean that activities at the third arm of government will stop.

“People need to understand that Mutunga is not the Judiciary and Judiciary is not Mutunga. Other activities will continue as usual. The courts will continue to operate and people will continue to get justice,” Mutunga said.

He assured the public that his exit at the Judiciary does not mean that he has stopped the struggle for a just society. “I will continue with the struggle for a just society, you don’t retire when the battle has not been won,” he said.

Mutunga, who is set to retire on Thursday this week, siad the government can devise ways of dealing with the cartels in this country whom he said is affecting the economy.

He said in Western Countries the government have a conversation with cartels and solutions on way forward is always found.

“These are people with money amounting to billions, we must start a conversation as a country with such people and we will have a way forward,” Mutunga said.

He also cited Tanzania where former President Julius Nyerere had a conversation with cartels and they brought back millions of shillings.

“Nyerere talked with the cartels on the interest of the country, the talks were successful and Tanzania got back millions of shillings, what stops us from having such talks too, Posed Mutunga.

Mutunga urged members of the public to always ask for accountability from those in authority in order to get better service instead of always complaining.

Surveyors blame Kaimenyi for ‘vacuum’ in Lands ministry

Surveyors have accused Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi of perpetuating corruption in the Lands ministry by creating a vacuum in the sector.

Addressing a press briefing, the Institution of Surveyors ( ISK) chairman Stephen Ambani alleged

that the vacuum in the Lands ministry is a result of failure to reconstitute the lands control boards mandated to regulate the sale, transfer, lease and sub division of agricultural land.

charged per transaction,” lamented Ambani.

The government taxes a two per cent term duty to the total fees charged in any land transaction conducted by the boards.

Their absence have stalled land transactions as many stakeholders cannot invest which has also affected financial lending institutions.

They now want the CS to speedily reconstitute the board and incorporate professionals including land valuers, surveyors and fiscal planners. “ We fail to understand who the CS is, consulting on the boards’ reconstitution.

Our obvious thinking is that he should incorporate us in the new teams,” added Ambani.

While dissolving the boards, Kaimenyi had announced that members of the defunct boards were not eligible and would have a representation from county

governments and three members from the local communities.

County Commissioners will lead the new boards taking over from the colonial District Commissioners(DO).

The new boards are expected to consider economic development of land, the intended use, nature of land and sufficiency of agricultural land while coming up with a decision to refuse or grant consent.

Sources from the ministry who have sought anonymity, have claimed that the CS’s hands have been tied

by Constitution where he is seeking to repeal some sections of the Land Control Act which is over 40 years.

“Section 11(2) for instance stipulates that the decisions of the appeals board are final and cannot be challenged in any court of law.

Junet had earlier learned of the pending arrest and was instructed by his lawyer, Orengo, not to leave Nation Centre until he arrived.

The same orders had also been issued to Senator Johnstone Mutrhama and three jubilee MPs Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete) and Kimani Ngujiri (Bahatai).

While the Jubilee MPs obeyed the orders and presented themselves at the DCI headquarters late Monday evening, their colleagues in Cord did not.

Six MPS to be arrained in court and charged with hate speech: Muhoro All the six members of Parliament facing incitement to violence charges will be presented to court this afternoon, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Ndegwa Muhoro has said.

Muhoro said the files of the hate speech culprits have been processed by his officers and were ready to be presented to the court by the time we went to press. Addressing a joint press conference today morning with the Chairperson of the National Integration and Cohesion Commission (NCIC) Francis Ole Kaparo, Muhoro said the fight against war mongers would take a different dimension which shall include culprits been arrested randomly for questioning.

“Some of the war mongers are currently recording statements with the Criminal Investigations department, and will be presenting them to the courts this afternoon” Muhoro told a press conference at NCIC headquarters. He regretted that the country was witnessing a disturbing trend coming from politicians, making hate speeches and inciting the public to violence.

“We will go for them despite their political positions,” he said. “We are going to deal accordingly with all the hate mongers in the country.”

Mr Mohamed and his lawyers James Orengo and Peter Kaluma were escorted to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Kiambu Road where he was

expected to record a statement concerning allegations that he and other Cord leaders made statements yesterday while responding to Moses Kuria’s remarks. However, Muhoro requested the media play their civil responsibility by reporting all the hate speech perpetrators.

He disclosed that previously the press failed to forward to the relevant materials to responsible agencies and hence jeopardizing the war on hate speech. Muhoro said that his department had now empowered his officers at the county level with right equipment ahead of the 2017 General Elections to rein on hate mongers who attend social and political functions at the counties.

On his part, Kaparo lamented that if the war mongers will not be reined on

they are likely to destroy the country.

He said that the current spate of increasing number of war mongers should be blamed to opposition’s street protests to forcefully evict from office the commissioners of the Independent Electoral and boundaries commission.

However, he disclosed that his commission we will not allow impunity to rein in the country under their watch.

NCIC, Judiciary trade blames over lack of hate talk convictions The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Judiciary are blaming each other over the lack of convictions in the hate speech cases prosecuted so far.

NCIC chairman Francis ole Kaparo (pictured right) yesterday heaped the blame on the Judiciary castigating it for ‘inaction’ on hate mongers.

Kaparo said his commission has several times asked the courts not to issue bonds especially on leaders accused of making hateful remarks but their pleas have never been heeded.

“The commission has on many occasions asked the courts not to give bonds but they have refused. I think you should asked the courts why they want to drive the country in the wrong direction,” Kaparo told reporters yesterday when asked why no senior politicians has been put behind bars over hate speech.

“Political utterances, ongoing ethnic balkanization and general intolerance by some politicians is alarming and misguided. The feeling some politicians can block other players from selling their agenda is a recipe for disaster worse

than the 2007 elections. It has been done before and it’s a philosophy that had dire consequences,” Kaparo warned.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga however defended the courts saying they only act on evidence provided.

“Courts only act on what evidence is presented.

We should remember that justice begins from the executive through to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions which provide us with evidence,” Mutunga said.

Mutunga said without evidence the courts cannot act contrary to the constitution hence asked all the players in the justice system to do their part.

“Both the ‘small fish’ and the ‘big fish’ have equal chance to access of justice if evidence is provided,” Mutunga said.

A part from the court system, the Kaparo led commission has no prosecutorial powers. Various amendments proposed by the commission in the NCIC Act in September last year are yet to be effected by parliament.

“The act was put in place quickly as part of Agenda Four. For example, what happens when

we summon an accused and fails to come? What happens when they ignore the summons?”

Kaparo posed.

He said the commission needs more powers to move the cases they have investigated forward.

Kaparo has admitted publicly that his commission is ‘toothless’ without the prosecutorial powers, a factor that may make the chances of those being prosecuted over hate speech evading the justice system.

“We are for the second time summoning the Gatundu South MP to appear before us and this time again we will appeal to the courts not to grant any bond should we move to that point,” Kaparo said.

Political analysts Barack Muluka also absolved the courts from blames saying the problem is with the society that condones injustice.

“You don’t expect justice from courts when as a society we have accepted injustice as a way of life,” Muluka said.

Muluka said the remarks made by legislators such as Moses Kuria are permitted by those in power who do nothing about it.

“Those close to power think they can do anything and get away with and we have seen that happening in this country,” Muluka said. @sam_x254

Orlando gunman was familiar face at club where he killed 50, got radicalized online

Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, the man who stormed a gay nightclub in the US on Sunday and shot dead 50 people was angry and homophobic when he saw two gay men being affectionate.

But he was also a friendly and familiar face at the gay club he eventually terrorized, killing 50 in a nightclub massacre in Orlando.

A conflicting image of the shooter has emerged as investigators try to understand the man responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

What could have driven Omar Mateen, a New York-born security guard who was the son of Afghan immigrants, to such a horrific act of violence, the biggest terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11?

Chris Callen, who worked at Pulse as a performer, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper he’d seen Mateen dozens of times at the club. According to his estimate, Mateen visited Pulse twice a month over a period of three years.

Mateen seemed “very friendly” and comfortable at the venue, Callen said.

Prior visits to Pulse are a line of inquiry investigators are pursuing, sources involved in the investigation tell CNN’s Jim Scuitto and Evan Perez.

But that picture doesn’t match up easily to the account of his coworkers who said Mateen was known to frequently spew anti-gay remarks.

“He was an angry person, violent in nature, and a bigot to almost every class of person,” Dan Gilroy told CNN affiliate WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach. The former police officer asserts that he foresaw Mateen eventually committing an act of mass violence.

Mateen’s ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, described a brief but violent relationship to a mentally-ill man whom she was only able to escape from through her family’s help. She said he was physically abusive and a steroid abuser.

Mateen had even come to the attention of authorities, with the FBI interviewing him in two terror-related cases in recent years.

However, the elder Mateen didn’t clarify further what kind of reaction his son had.

Gilroy, Mateen’s former co-worker at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, said Mateen often made homophobic, sexist and racist remarks.

“He would hit things and as he was hitting things, he would yell, and of course there was always curse words involved, and this wasn’t seldom, this was all the time.”

He said he asked his employers not to be assigned to work alongside Mateen, but this request was

denied. At that point, Gilroy told Mateen he didn’t want to continue their relationship on a personal level, according to WPTV. “He acted very negatively toward that. He then started to text me 20 to 30 times a day. Call me 15 to 20 times,” he said.

He said he wished he could have done something to prevent the tragedy.

“I saw it coming. I mean everything,” he said. “He said he was going to kill a whole bunch of people.”

Mateen first came on the FBI’s radar in 2013 when he made “inflammatory comments to coworkers alleging possible terrorist ties,” Assistant Special Agent in Charge Ronald Hopper said.

But investigators “were unable to verify the substance of his comments,” he said. In 2014,

Thousands of people gathered in central Orlando on Monday night, holding candles and flowers in tribute to the victims.

Imam Muhammad Musri, of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, said the attack had been “an act of terror, an act of hate”.

“We condemn the ideology of hate

and death and destruction and we call for all Muslim leaders and communities across this nation and across the world to stand up and to deal with this cancer and to remove it once and for all,” he said.

The vigil was held outside the area’s main performing arts venue, the Dr Phillips Center, which has become the site of a makeshift memorial.

“Pulse gave me confidence, made me realise I was normal and so much like everyone else,” said Cathleen Daus, a former employee at the club who attended the vigil.

In New York, the lights of the Empire State Building were turned off as thousands attended a memorial event for the Orlando victims.

He said that investigators have found no indication the attack was directed from outside the United States or that Mateen was part of any kind of network. According to one official, analysis of Mateen’s electronic devices showed searches for jihadist propaganda, including videos of ISIS beheading.

“He consumed a hell of a lot of jihadist propaganda,” the source said.

Mateen lived in a condo in Fort Pierce, Florida, with his second wife, a woman named Noor Salman, according to documents CNN obtained.

He also had a son, 3½, according to Mateen’s father. He had worked for nine years as a security officer at G4S Secure Solutions, one of the world’s largest private security companies.

According to a neighbor, he was a security guard at the St. Lucie County Courthouse, often manning the metal detectors at the front of the building.

Soho district, the hub of the city’s gay community, and there were cheers as 49 balloons were released, one for each of those who died.

Australia’s landmark Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit in the rainbow colours of the gay community flag as hundreds gathered to pay tribute.

‘AfricaWorking’ initiative to provide jobs to 250,000 youth A group of private companies have teamed up to form ‘AfricaWorking’, an initiative seeking to support over 200,000 youth and 50,000 entrepreneurs both in Kenya and across the continent.

The new association seeks to channel the collective power and voice of the private sector to address the issue of employability and entrepreneurship in Africa by the year 2020.

“Most large corporations are looking at youth skills development in one form or another, because it’s crucial to their business. The idea behind AfricaWorking is to bring these corporations together, align our efforts, share our learnings and build human capital on a pan-Africa scale,” says Lutz Ziob, Dean of the Microsoft 4Afrika Academy.

Invest in infrastructure, Tetra Pak urges producers Tetra Pak, one of the region’s leading food processing and packaging companies, has urged producers in East Africa and the continent to invest in infrastructure as the firm announces plans to grow its market by an average of 27 per cent packs annually.

Tetra Pak East Africa Managing Director, Hakan Soderholm has said that for it to achieve its target of reaching out to over 100 million emerging consumers, both producers and Tetra Pak must continue investing in infrastructure.

“We are expecting continued double digit growth in East Africa mainly led by opportunities to meet the needs of the consumers for high quality, nutritious and affordable products that are processed and packed in a safe way to be distributed without need for refrigeration,” he said.

Dennis Jönsson, the President and CEO of Tetra Pak Group said continued success in this market depends on an ability to provide safe, secure and sustainable nourishment to African consumers.

Safety concerns crippling hospitality sector Longhorn Publishers moves to purchase 74pc stake in firm A report by hospitality data and analytics specialist STR has revealed that hotel markets in Nairobi and Lagos have both suffered setbacks predominantly due to safety concerns.

Figures submitted show that Revenue per available room over the five year period to 2015 was down 5.3 per cent in Nairobi and 8.9 per cent in Lagos.

Nairobi started 2016 with a 3.5 per cent decline in revenue per available room for 2016 Q1 compared with 2015 Q1 mainly due to a 10.1 per cent decline in occupancy. Nigeria’s Lagos on the other hand recorded a flat performance in 2016 Q1 with a decline in occupancy levelling out an increase in average daily rate. Cairo and Cape Town’s markets have however experienced strong performances over the past five years despite political turmoil in Cairo.

Longhorn Publishers has issued a cautionary notice to its stakeholders just as the firm announced plans to purchase a 74 per cent stake in Law Africa Publishing Limited (Law Africa) for a soon to be disclosed amount.

“The proposed acquisition may have a material effect on the value of the shares of the company. The shareholders of the company and the public are accordingly advised to exercise due caution when dealing in the shares of the company,” Longhorn Managing Director Simon Ngigi said. The completion of the proposed acquisition is subject to several conditions being obtained, including all regulatory approvals from the Competition Authority of Kenya, Capital Markets Authority and approval by shareholders. Law Africa is a private company that carries on business as a legal content publisher and a trader in both print and electronic books.

“Pursuant to Regulations 19 (2) of the Capital Markets, Longhorn Publishers Limited hereby announces to the public

that the company has on 9th June 2016 entered into an agreement with the shareholders of Law Africa Publishing Limited for the sale and purchase of 74 percent of the issued share capital of Law Africa Publishing Limited,” Ngigi said in a cautionary notice on Monday.

Law Africa specialises in publishing legal material for the East African market and is at the moment planning to venture into South Sudan.

Longhorn Publishers Ltd last week saw its stock edge upwards by 13.83 per cent.

The share price was up to Sh5.35 from the previous week’s close of Sh4.70. The stock was the week’s top gainer, moving 102,900 shares. Year-to-date, its share price has gained 30.8 per cent of its value. The jump in stock prices came just after Longhorn Publishers carried out a rights issue that saw the company raise Sh530million. Kenya partners with Iran to promote local tourism sector

The Ministry of Tourism has announced a deal with Iran aimed at stimulating Kenya’s tourism sector, industry Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has confirmed.

In a statement released just hours ago, the CS said that he met with H.E. Dr. Hadi Farajvand - Ambassador of Iran to Kenya.

The Tourism Ministry is making moves to promote the country by inviting Iranian journalists to Kenya, to film a documentary about the nation’s cultures and attractions.

Speaking during their courtesy call yesterday, Balala and the Ambassador discussed how to promote Kenya as a tourist destination in Iran.

Kenya has in the past continued to have dealings with Iran, having signed numerous deals with the Middle Eastern country including a 2009 deal for direct flights between Tehran and Nairobi and scholarships for Kenyans to pursue higher education in Iran.

In 2014, the Chairman of the Kenya Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Mohamed Yusuf Haji visited Tehran, where he held talks with the Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran Alaeddin Boroujerdi. Haji expressed interest in learning from Iran’s advancement in science, industry and technology.

In August 2014, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Kenya Amina Mohamed met with the Foreign Affairs Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran. The two officials signed

MOUs in economic, scientific and technical cooperation. The MOU also identified transport and infrastructure, energy, agriculture, water and irrigation, housing and health as other key areas of cooperation.

The two countries have further cemented their bilateral relations through trade.

Exports from Kenya to Iran in 2012 stood at Sh1.95 billion while the value of imports from Iran to Kenya stood at Sh3.67 billion.

Kenya’s Foreign Cabinet Secretary stated that many powerful countries in the world still maintained trade relations with Iran and that both countries would keep trading.

Iran is one of the largest buyers of Kenyan tea. Kenya increased its tea exports to Iran from 2 million kilos to 10 million kilos over a five-year period.

Demand for tea in Iran stands at 116 million kilos, with Iran only producing 20 million kilos. Kenya sells about 20 per cent of its tea to Iran.

According to a report from the Africa Economic Development Institute, the two governments are expected to expand transportation and tourism between the two countries, by establishing the aforementioned direct flights from Nairobi to Tehran, and by developing a shipping line linking both countries.

BIZ BRIEFS EAC now most integrated trading block in continent The East African Community (EAC) is now the most integrated trading bloc on the continent, a milestone that if maintained, is set to increase employment opportunities while improving the living standards of millions of people across the region, a new report has revealed.

The International Growth Centre, a research organisation, confirmed the statistics that placed the EAC in the top spot, citing instances where its members agreed on a customs union in 2005, and a common market in 2010. According to the analysis, the region is richer and more peaceful as a result, argues a new paper from the organisation. The data has also found that bilateral trade between member countries was 213 per cent higher in 2011 than it would otherwise have been.

Watamu resort to get Sh800 million facelift Hemingways Collection, a regional leader in luxury resorts and the hospitality industry, is set to invest Sh800 million towards the upgrading of its Watamu resort. The facelift will see the resort attain a world class facility status. The firm’s Chairman Richard Evans says the upgrade comes due to a need of quality resorts in Watamu. “The Coast has been neglected for a while following the downward trend performance owing to insecurity concerns since the Al Shabaab attacks, Kenya has been losing to Zanzibar hence there is need for high-end hotels at the Coast,” Evans said.

The chairman signed a contract with Mujji Devraj Contractors that will see the resort that has 76 rooms downsized to 39 rooms with 15 high class apartments. The announcement comes just days after tourism Stakeholders agreed and committed to implementing a common calendar of tourism activities for the coast region, one of the country’s most popular regions for foreign tourism.

Tourism is a key foreign exchange earner for Kenya but terrorism attacks have seen visitor arrivals drop as key markets issued travel advisories. The slump has seen

some hotels close shop with over 30,000 people losing their jobs. The United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany have since lifted their travel warnings on key Coastal holiday towns due to improved security, raising hopes for sector revival.

“There is a growing luxury market in the country and a growing business travel sector, we are planning to tap in to this niche market. We have been successful in the Nairobi business which we started in 2013, we are sure that the Watamu business will work well,” Evans added.

The firm in 2013 opened a luxury hotel in Nairobi’s Karen suburb, a 45 suite hotel.

The Nairobi property is the third in the Hemingways collection that includes Watamu and Ol Seki in the Maasai Mara.

Meanwhile the Malindi Watamu Tourism Association is set to sign a deal with Kenya Airways to market the Kenyan Coast to visitors from landlocked African countries. According to Roberto Marini, the association’s chairperson, the Memorandum of Understanding will be signed in the next 10 days in a bid to bring Watamu back to its glory. “

The GNR was today officially launched concurrently in Nairobi, Johannesburg, Stockholm and Washington DC. The 2016 report focuses on the theme of making – and measuring – global commitments to nutrition, and what it will take to end malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Uhuru to discuss economic integration at global Summit TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 2016

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to discuss economic integration at the 6th Ordinary Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

The discussions in the summit will also focus on regional peace and security, governance, as well as humanitarian and environmental issues.

The President arrived for the Summit in Angola on Monday night.

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) is an inter-governmental organization of the countries in the African Great Lakes Region.

The summit comes just days after the East African Community (EAC) was named the most integrated trading bloc on the continent by International Growth Centre, a research organisation.

The integration has been described as a milestone that if maintained, is set to increase employment opportunities while improving the living standards of millions of people across the region, a new report has revealed.

ICGLE’s establishment was based on the recognition that political instability and conflicts in these countries have a considerable regional dimension and thus require a concerted effort in order to promote sustainable peace and development. Most notable among the conflicts that have had crossborder impacts or origins are the 1994 Rwandan genocide that led to the loss of more than 800,000 lives, and the political instability in DRC. These conflicts constituted a major threat to international peace and security.

The organization is composed of twelve member states, namely: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic,

Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia. Its founding history began in 2000 when the United Nations Security Council, as stated in its resolutions 1291 and 1304, called for an International Conference on peace, security, democracy and development in the Great Lakes region. Later that year, the Secretariat of the International Conference was established in Nairobi, Kenya, under the umbrella of the United Nations and the African Union.

This year’s summit themed; “Accelerating the effective

implementation of the Pact and its Protocols for a more democratic and stable Great Lakes Region” was preceded by the meeting of ICGLR Chiefs of Defence Forces on June 10, 2016 followed by meeting of ICGLR Ministers of Defence on June 11, 2016 and ICGLR Ministers of Foreign Affairs on June 12, 2016. Among others, the Ministers of Defence will consider the report of the meeting of Chiefs of Defence Forces, who will receive the report of the ICGLR Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM); Report of the Military Experts Committee which conducted a military’s needs Assessment in the

Central African Republic (CAR) on 10th to 15th March, 2016 and the report from the Guarantors comprising the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the DRC and the Region Ministers of Foreign Affairs will adopt the report of the Regional Inter-Ministerial Committee (RIMC) meeting held on February 11, 2016 in Luanda, Angola. @Dennis_x254

Foundation calls on local groups to apply for Sh3.8 million in funding The Toyota Foundation has called on Kenya-based organisations to apply for grants worth up to Sh3.8 million as part of the group’s Research Grants Program for 2016.

The Foundation is currently accepting applications for its initiative dubbed “Exploring New Values for Society” in order to contribute towards the realization of a more people oriented society and a resulting increase in human happiness.

“No limitations are placed on proposals with regard to the nationality or place of residence of the project representative or participants; nor is there any restriction with regard to their affiliation (or lack thereof) with a university, research institute, NPO/NGO, or other organization,” the Foundation said in a recently-released statement.

The group is offering Joint Research Grants of up to 4 million (Sh3.8 million) yen per year, as well as Individual Research Grants: Up to 1 million (Sh956,000) yen per year. The foundation provides grants in support of research and operations in order to respond to a diverse array of social issues, with a focus on areas of human and natural environment, social welfare, and education and culture.

World Bank to scale up school feeding programs in country For the first time, detailed data about national school meal programs are available in the newly-released Global School Feeding Sourcebook: Lessons from 14 Countries. In Kenya, more than 1.5 million school children are fed a hot lunch of corn and legumes each day, the only meal many of them will have.

Using case studies from around the world, including programs in nine countries in SubSaharan Africa, the sourcebook provides a comprehensive analysis of school feeding programs to identify common themes, challenges and good practices.

“I think we are now at a stage where it’s not whether school feeding is important, it’s how to design and deliver school feeding,” said Andy Tembon, World Bank senior health specialist.

“This sourcebook comes at a very important moment, because it gives us an idea of how to strengthen and how to scale up school feeding programs.” According to the analysis, the strongest and most sustainable programs are those that respond to a community need, are locally-owned and incorporate some form of parental or community involvement.

The sourcebook is the third in a series of analysis on school feeding by the World Bank, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Imperial College London’s Partnership for Child Development (PCD). Developed in response to demand from governments and development partners, the sourcebook offers guidelines for designing and implementing sustainable national food programs, as well as recommendations for strengthening existing programs. Nine Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries are included in the analysis: Botswana, Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria and South Africa. “School feeding programs can help to get children into school and help keep them there, increasing enrollment and reducing absenteeism,” said World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and WFP’s Ertharin Cousins in a joint foreword. “While there are many successful models for rich countries, there is specific demand from governments in low and middle income countries for guidance on how to strengthen and scale up their national programs. @Kevin_x254

Failing financial products in Kenya could compromise years of development: WBG The potential failure of new financial products could compromise years of financial sector development in Kenya and even affect public trust in money and banking, he World Bank Group (WBG) has warned.

According to World Bank Group Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer Joaquim Levy, an uptick in the adoption of financial technology in Kenya and across the globe is transforming how the financial sector operates and bringing in a completely new set of players to the financial sector.

Speaking at the 16th Annual International Conference on Policy Challenges for the Financial Sector in Washington DC, Levy said that the new ways to gather, process and use information and their implications to financial regulation deserve analysis.

“We have seen how some of these trends and changes are more dramatic in emerging markets and developing countries than in developed countries,” he told a forum in Washington earlier this month.

“This is consistent with the fact that 40 per cent of the global population already has internet access, and that the poorest 20 per cent of households of the world are more likely to have access to a mobile phone than to clean water and sanitation. Of course, the dividends of digital technologies are not equal across countries,

and greater connectivity may not produce faster development,” Levy added.

This “digital divide” was the focus of the World Bank’s most recent World Development Report.

Levy warned that though new financial technology was a boon to the developing world, it also presented new risks, including a rise in cybercrime.

Levy told the forum that should an important failure occur in these new products, such as the numerous financial products now available through cell phones in Kenya, the resulting loss in public confidence could potentially compromise years of financial sector development and even affect public trust in money and banking.

“We must look forward and review the regulatory and supervisory approaches – such as focusing on intelligence work rather than compliance with standards to address cybersecurity risks or supervising functions and processes rather than institutions.

Despite these risks and challenges, the promise of fintech outweighs its downsides. As seen in the 2008 global crisis, financial systems bring development gains when they perform well and result in major social costs when they do not,” Levy said. @Dennis_x254

I live with my employer and her daughter and I love my job. Even though I might not be in the most reputable profession and I don’t earn a lot of money I like my employee and she treats me well. The problem is a few days ago I found her 12-year old daughter watching pornographic movies on the computer while I was trying to clean up the living room. She quickly switched off the machine and ran off after she noticed I had entered

the room. My employer gives her a lot of freedom and lets her do as she pleases which has made her a bit of a spoilt brat. I’m not sure how to break the news to my boss because she loves her daughter very much and I’m not sure she’ll believe me, but it’s not the first time it has happened.

Sit your employer down and tell her what you saw. A 12-year old child is much too young to be watching content of that nature. Although children grow up very fast these days it can be damaging for a child to be exposed to such extreme things at such an impressionable age.

Tell her and she believes you then it’s well and good, if not then she might have a bigger problem on her hands. The freedom she is giving her child might be making the situation worse and even if it is a touchy subject it is better to nip it in the bud. If you tried taking to the child yourself she might not listen to you because she feels entitled so the only real option you have is to break the ice with your employer and tell it to her straight. he emergence of Mekatilili wa Menza as an icon of the struggle of oppression against colonial rule was prophesied decades before her birth. The seer Me Po Ho or Mepoho had foreseen the coming of Europeans to Africa and the subsequent subjugation of its indigenous peoples that would follow. She prophesied about Mekatilili’s great deeds that she would in the face of colonialism and also about her death.

Born in the late 19th century, she was the only girl in a family of five boys. Mekatilili came from a poor family who suffered from the effects of the slave trade in Africa.

Mekatilili was eventually married but became a widow which gave her a freedom that most married women at the time did not enjoy.

By the time that the British had begun their occupation of Kenya Mekatilili was an old woman. High taxation, forced labour and land grabbing were things that were relatively new to the Giriama tribe and as such they were not welcome. This spurred on Mekatilili to begin her resistance against the British.

In association with another patriot, Wanje wa Mwadorika, Mekatilili started giving public addresses rallying people against the colonialists. In a short span of time, the Giriama heeded her warning.

She was arrested in October 1913 and sent to jail in Kisii but this was no hindrance in her mission. 5 months later she escaped and moved back to the coast. She and Wanje walked the great distance in between taking 3 months to reach home and surviving the wild Kenyan territory.

In 1919 a war broke out between the Giriama people and the British that was sparked by the destruction of kayas (holy shrines) and the second imprisonment of Mekatilili. She also escaped for the second time and soon focused her efforts in winning back those who had become loyal to the colonialists.

Cameroon given low seeding for 2018 World Cup qualifiers Cameroon will be a third seed for African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Fifa revealed on Monday.

The Indomitable Lions have appeared at the tournament seven times, more than any other African country, but have suffered in recent years.

Algeria, Ghana and African champions Ivory Coast are among the top seeds based on Fifa’s rankings for June.

Others in the first seed are Senegal and Tunisia.

Seed two has Cape Verde, Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali.

Twenty African teams will be split into five groups, with only the winners

making it to the finals in Russia.

Nigeria, who boast the second most World Cup qualifications from Africa with five, have been included among the second seeds.

Eighteen of the teams in the draw, which will take place on 24 June, are among the top 20 in the rankings with Gabon (22) and Libya (33) the exceptions.

Uganda, the only East African team in the qualifiers are in the fourth seed alongside Burkina Faso, Zambia, Gabon and Libya.

The Indomitable Lions are in the third seed alongside 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa, Guinea, Morocco and

Congo Brazzaville.

Qualifying kicks off in October, continues in November and there will be a further four rounds during 2017 between August and November.

Cameroon’s last two appearances at the World Cup were a disaster. They lost all three of their group games in South Africa in 2010 and in Brazil four years later.

They have also suffered a miserable time on their continent, finishing bottom of their group at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Cameroon failed to qualify for the tournament in 2012 and 2013.

Everton confirm Koeman hiring Everton have confirmed Ronald Koeman as their new manager on a three-year deal.

The Toffees will pay about £5m compensation for the 53-year-old, who leaves Premier League rivals Southampton after two years in charge.

Everton have been without a manager since sacking Roberto Martinez just before the end of the 2015-16 season.

Koeman said Everton is a club with a “great history and real ambition”, while chairman Bill Kenwright called the Dutchman his “number one target”.

A deal with the former Netherlands international, headhunted by new owner Farhad Moshiri, was agreed earlier in the week and is reported to be worth about £6m a year.

The official announcement was delayed until Koeman had returned from holiday.

“Ronald has such a strong track record in the game, instantly commanding

respect for what he achieved as a player and for his qualities and accomplishments as a manager,” added Kenwright.

“We are really pleased to have secured the man who was our number one target from the moment we set out to appoint a new manager.”

Saints finished seventh and sixth under Koeman - their best Premier League campaign.

He is expected to be joined at Goodison Park by brother Erwin and fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg, though a deal for the pair is yet to be finalised.

Spain’s attempt to win a record third European Championship in a row began with a last-gasp victory over the Czech Republic.

Gerard Pique headed in a late Andres Iniesta cross, finally breaking the resistance of their stubborn opponents.

Alvaro Morata, Jordi Alba and David Silva had earlier efforts saved as the holders lacked a cutting edge.

Spain had also survived a scare when Cesc Fabregas hooked a Theodor Gebre Selassie header off the goalline.

FA raises concern over Lille security The FA has “serious concerns” about security in Lille, where England fans and Russian supporters are set to gather for this week’s Euro 2016 matches, chairman Greg Dyke has said.

England fans are due to be in Lille ahead of Thursday’s match against Wales in nearby Lens, while Russia play Slovakia in the city on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say 150 Russian hooligans were behind the violence in Marseille.

Six England fans were jailed after Russia played England on Saturday.

Two Russians have been arrested, both for a pitch invasion.

Both teams could face expulsion by Uefa, the organisers of Euro 2016, if there is any further violence.

In a letter to Uefa in response to the expulsion threat, Mr Dyke rejected the suggestion that England fans were at fault for scenes inside the Stade

Velodrome following the match with Russia.

“The implication in your jointlyaddressed letter is that English fans were in part responsible for the terrible incidents at the end of the match with Russia,” he wrote.

“This is contradicted both by the video evidence and by the fact your independent disciplinary bodies have only instigated sanctions against the Russian Football Union.”

He said the stewarding in the stadium was “unacceptable” as supporters were able to get in with fireworks and flares, and there was “insufficient segregation” between England and Russian fans.

“A minority of English fans were clearly involved in some of those incidents and that is extremely disappointing to us all, but please also recognise that tens of thousands have behaved in a positive

way,” he wrote.

The FA welcomed an alcohol ban across the host cities, he said, “particularly in Lille on Wednesday where many English fans have been asked to gather ahead of Thursday’s match against Wales in Lens”.

England fans had been advised to stay in Lille because Lens is a small city.

“We have, following consultation with the authorities, advised our supporters without tickets for the match in Lens to congregate there,” Mr Dyke wrote.

“Whilst we will be working hard to positively influence their behaviour we have serious concerns around the security arrangements for the city in the next few days.

“These concerns are heightened with the knowledge that Russia will play in Lille on Wednesday afternoon.”

Uefa is due to deal with its disciplinary proceedings against Russia later.

Charges against Russia are for crowd disturbances, racist behaviour, and setting off fireworks during the game against England in Marseille.

The clashes in Marseille’s Stade Velodrome on Saturday followed England’s 1-1 Euro 2016 draw with Russia, after Russian fans appeared to rush at England supporters.

Meanwhile, England manager Roy Hodgson (pictured left) and captain Wayne Rooney appealed directly to fans to “behave themselves”.

The two teams will clash at the Stade Geoffroy in Saint Etienne tonight in a match set to be officiated by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir.

While Portugal boast of huge talent of the Madrid duo, they also have in their ranks experienced players in defence and attack with the likes of Bruno Alves, Jose Fonte, Louis Nani, Joea Moutinho and Ricardo Quaresma in the squad.

Iceland will however rely on Swansea attacking midfielder Gyfli Sigurdson (pictured left) and experienced forward Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Austria are tipped to win the contest with Bayern star david Alaba pulling the strings from midfield with Leicester City’s Cristian Fuchs playing at his usual left-back position.

Stoke attacker Marko Arnautovic is expected to provide the goals alongside hitman Marc Janko of Basel.

Giaccherini, Pele on target as Italy see off Belgium

manuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle scored as Italy began their Euro 2016 campaign with victory over much-fancied Belgium in Lyon.

Sunderland’s Giaccherini slotted home in the first half after collecting Leonardo Bonucci’s superb long pass.

Southampton’s Pelle sealed the win in injury time with an emphatic volley following an incisive break.

Belgium were very disappointing, with Romelu Lukaku and Divock Origi wasteful in front of goal.

The Everton forward curled over from the edge of the box with just the keeper to beat while Liverpool’s Origi missed two opportunities to head his side level.

Before the tournament began some pundits condemned the Italian squad for a lack of quality, and even coach Antonio Conte admitted; “It isn’t a good time for our football.”

The soon-to-be-Chelsea boss added: “It’s important the squad has a good spirit. I work a lot at this.”

And on the evidence of last night’s game, that is not the only thing he has worked at.

Italy’s triumph was a result of superior organisation and discipline against 11 Belgian individuals who appear to possess, on paper

at least, the greater talent. Both sides now face games against the Republic of Ireland and Sweden, who drew 1-1 in the Group E opener earlier on Monday.

With 16 of 24 teams progressing from the group stage, Italy took a huge step towards advancing with victory against their likeliest challengers.

Italy have won this competition once, in 1968, and finished runners-up twice, most recently in 2012, when they were demolished 4-0 by Spain in the final.

While the current Azzurri side went unbeaten through qualifying, winning seven of their 10 matches, they compare unfavourably with the side of four years ago, lacking the calm, creative brilliance of Andrea Pirlo in midfield and an attacking spearhead to adequately replace a faded Mario Balotelli.

What they do have is a meticulous and tactically astute coach in the Chelsea-bound Conte and a stubborn Juventus-centric defence.

Such a foundation allowed them to limit and frustrate Belgium, leaving them vulnerable to one piece of ruthless counter-attacking brilliance, which Bonucci’s 50-yard, defence-splitting pass and Giaccherini’s cool finish provided.
