Divergent views emerge on fate of IEBC WEEKEND EDITION, JULY 22-24, 2016

The first week of the joint parliamentary committee has been characterised by divergent views from different stakeholders on the electoral reforms at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). While some institutions want the current commissioners to immediately vacate office over lack of confidence from the public, some have cautioned the committee against sending the commissioners home. Religious leaders on Monday kicked off the storm telling the OrengoKiraitu led commission to send the commissioners home and have a new team in place as soon as possible. Led by the Secretary General of the National Council of Churches Peter Karanja, the religious leaders told the joint committee to give the electoral commissioners an exit package as they had already expressed interest of vacating office voluntarily. “The commissioners are ready to leave office, all they told us when we had a meeting with them is that they should not be held culpable of anything as they have a reputation to protect,’’ Karanja said on Monday. “In our opinion as religious leaders, the commissioners have expressed interest to leave office and therefore this committee should hasten the process so as to give a new team enough time for preparations,” he said. Karanja cautioned the committee against derailing the process of electoral reforms which Kenyans have fought for recently. “I want to urge parliament not derail this process of reforms at IEBC, Kenyans have worked hard to make this process a success and all parties have agreed to dialogue as the way forward,” Karanja said.

Attorney General Githu Muigai has sending the electoral commissioners home would lead to setting up of a fresh election date. Attorney General Githu Muigai, however, cautioned the select committee against sending the electoral commissioners home, saying such a move would lead to setting up of a fresh election date. In his presentation, Muigai said the postponement of the election from the current date August 8, 2017 will allow the new team to adequately prepare for the general elections. Muigai reminded the committee of the Kriegler report on the conduct of the 2007 General Elections that demands that a new elections team should be in place at least 24 months to the General

Elections. “If a petition were received by this House today it would take no less than one month to dispose of a petition in nine parts. In our view, it would take no less than three months for a tribunal to go through the allegations touching on nine or so Commissioners and I would imagine it would take the President another two weeks to consider and receive advice on the report,” Githu said. “We recommend that this Committee should be aware of the sort of time and resources involved in this regard. We have 383 days to the General

Election, and so this issue of the time that a new commission needs to be in place is a very important one and I would say with tremendous respect Mr Chairman, that your Committee must think about it very seriously.” “I must say this without recommending it, and I am not recommending it, I am suggesting that you may need to think very carefully whether you want to alter the date of the next General Election,” Muigai said Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, however, said that Cord Coalition cannot allow the Jubilee administration even a single day in office upon the

expiry of their term. “Elections must be held on August 7 as had been planned, we cannot tolerate this government more even for a single minute,” he said. The Attorney General’s sentiments were also echoed by the chairperson of the National Gender and Equality Commission yesterday. The commission’s chairperson Wilfred Lichuma said there would be no time for new commissioners to acquaint themselves with the electoral laws and conduct a free and fair elections. “Nobody is an angel, we cannot cheat ourselves that we can send the current commissioners home and have others in place within time to conduct a free and fair elections, it’s not just possible,” She said. Lichuma said sending the team home before the expiry of their term may attract legal suits and the government may end up paying heavily in compensation. She said some of the commissioners are still young and have a career to protect and should therefore be treated in humane manner. “Some of the commissioners are only in their 40s and they have a career to protect, where do you want them to go when they have a history of being kicked out? Lichuma asked. ” Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) recommended that the electoral commission should be inclusive of people with disability and with proper gender balance adhering to the twothirds gender rule. Transparency International submitted to the committee that electoral commissioners with criminal allegations should face the law and that there should be no immunity against criminal culpability. @sam_x254

Student radicalisation linked to ongoing unrests in schools A number of students mostly in secondary schools have been radicalized a factor that could be contributing to the increase of school unrests in the country, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said. The Cabinet Secretary, however, did not divulged more details on the names of schools. saying he will share the report in camera with the Senate Education Committee later. “You will be shocked on what is happening in our schools if the reports of what I have is anything to by, I will share with you on what is happening to our children in camera,” Matiang’i said when appeared before the senate education committee on Tuesday. The Cabinet Secretary was responding to question by Isiolo Women Representative Tiya Galgalo who wanted to know measures taken by the Ministry to tackle rising radicalisation of students especially in Isiolo. “In Isiolo young boys and students just disappear, parents don’t know where they are and our fear is that our

children maybe are being radicalized. Does the ministry have a plan to tackle this problem because it might also be a contributing factor the schools unrests in our country? Galgalo asked. Matiang’i said they are working with the Inspector General Joseph Boinnet and Interior Cabinet Secretary on how to address the school unrests and other security related issues. “The Inspector General has been very helpful to us on matters of security in our schools, he provides us with intelligence every day and we are working well,” Matiang’i said. The Cabinet Secretary also said the ministry will soon launch a system where all students are given tracking number (index number) from primary all the way to university. “This is a system implemented in countries like the United States of America and we will also soon launch it.When will receive funds from the World Bank and the exchequer to implement the system,” Matiang’i said. The government on Tuesday formed an

eight-member Special Investigations Team to investigate incidents of school unrest as part of the measures to completely solve the perennial school unrest The team is expected to submit findings of its report to the Ministry of Education and the Interior Ministry within 30 days. The team has membership drawn from the ministry of Interior and education. “The report should clearly outline measures to be taken to forestall future cases of unrest and also spell out individuals/parties that will be held responsible for the school fires, including through prosecution and surcharging of suspects,” read a statement signed by Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’i (pictured) (Education) and Joseph Nkaissery (Interior). The team is required to ensure comprehensive investigation of all cases of school fires during the second term of 2016, review recommendations of past task forces on student unrest, review implementation status and

propose methodology of effecting the balance of proposals as well as audit existing school safety and security. This comes as the government yesterday urged Head teachers to close immediately they sense any danger of unrest.

“Head teachers should not wait for these incidents to happen, they should close even for three days whenever they sense any danger of unrest so as to find time and address the issue,” said government spokesman Erick Kiraithe yesterday. @sam_x254

Justice and Legals Affairs committee chairman Samuel Chepkonga speaks during their hearings last week. MPs shelved his report that found no reason to sack IEBC chiefs.

MPs postpone debate on committee report clearing IEBC bosses Members of Parliament yesterday struck a deal to shelve a debate on a report by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee that exonerated Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioners of any wrongdoing. The House Business Committee which is a key decision making organ, is said to have reached a consensus after it become apparent there was a sibling rivalry between the Chepkonga-led committee and the Parliamentary Joint Select committee on IEBC reforms. The two House teams tussled over parallel investigations into the conduct of electoral commission. Majority Chief Whip Katoo ole Metito while moving the procedural motion said; “I wish to move this motion to defer debate on a report by the departmental committee on Justice and Legal Affairs to give time to Parliamentary Select Joint Committee to conclude their proceedings,” Metito said Parliament had decided to give direction in the matter after it become obvious perceptions had been created that parliament was out to jeopardise the work of the select committee. “Following lengthy discussions, we agreed that while the Justice and Legal Affairs committee has finished its work, there is no going back. We have agreed to defer debate of the report for 30 days,” he explained. The House Standing Orders require that a committee report must be debated within 10 days of tabling. The decision to suspend the debate on the report will come as a relief to the select committee Co-chaired by Senators James Orengo and Kiraitu Murungi.

Co-chair James Orengo had asked Speaker Justin Muturi to stop the work of the JLAC committee led by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga to allow the joint committee continue with talks. “This is a negotiated committee that overrides any other committee or body because this is the only legal and legitimate body to deliver legal and institutional framework on IEBC reforms,” he said. But contributing to the motion, Majority Leader Aden Duale said they had prevailed on members of the Justice and Legal Affairs committee and the Constitutional Implementation and Oversight committee to postponed their until report until the bipartisan committee finishes its work. “We have convinced members of the joint National Assembly committee that we shelve all business touching on electoral reform,” he said. On his part, Chepkonga said that proceeding to debate his committee report would have endangered the work of the select committee. JLAC sparked a storm after they cleared the nine electoral commissioners over allegations of incompetence and lack of integrity discharging their work. He defended his committee, saying Barasa Nyukuri petition was watered down by a court order by Justice Isaac Lenaola to expunge any incriminating reference to the chair of IEBC, Isaack Hassan, in Auditor’s General report. “Before the order was given to us, we had already written the obituary of the commissioners, but the move ruined and frustrated our report,” he said. @hillary_x254

Kenya sees dramatic rise in HIV infections

K

enya sees dramatic rise in HIV infections The rate of new HIV infections in the country has risen, a new study from the Global Burden of Disease collaborative network revealed. Kenya’s rate of new infections has risen steadily over the past decade more than other nation in sub-Saharan Africa, the findings show. Between 2005 and 2015, the number of new HIV cases in Kenya grew by an average of 7.1 per cent per year in Kenya, one of the highest increases in the world. The number of new infections decreased over the same period in Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda. Kenya is also one of a small set of countries where HIV prevalence was more than 2.5 per cent of the population in 2015. At the same time, Kenya’s antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage is 39 per cent below the regional average of 43 per cent. Despite this combination of high rates of new infections and the rise of people living with HIV in Kenya, the number of Kenyans dying from the disease has been cut in half from 120,670 in 2005 to 51,700 in 2015. “There is need for a more proactive approach in countering new HIV infections in Kenya. Voluntary testing and treatment is key in avoiding further spread of the virus especially for expectant mothers who need to be sensitized on the importance of delivering in hospital where care givers can help prevent mother to child transmission during birth through administration of ARVs,” said Tom Achoki, a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Engagement Officer at the Institute for Heath Metrics and Evaluation. The study found that 74 countries saw increases in age-standardized rates of new infections between 2005 and 2015, including Kenya, Egypt, Pakistan, the Philippines, Cambodia, Mexico and Russia. The new research, released at the International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, also found that while the global number of new cases continues to decline, the pace has greatly slowed. “New infections of HIV fell by an average of only 0.7 per cent per year between 2005 and 2015, compared to the 2.7 per cent drop per year between 1997 and 2005,” the study stated. “If this trend of stubbornly high new infections continues, there will be significant challenges in meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal for the world to witness the end of AIDS in less than 15 years,” said Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) Director Christopher Murray. “Everyone in population health – researchers, policymakers, practitioners, pharmaceutical companies, advocates, and others – needs to understand that even if more people are living with HIV, we cannot end AIDS without stopping new infections,” said Murray. “The continuing high rate of over 2 million new HIV infections represents a collective failure which must be addressed through intensified prevention efforts and continued investment in HIV vaccine research,” he said. In contrast to the overall slow decline in new infections, the number of people living with HIV has significantly increased globally, largely due to the expansion of antiretroviral therapy. IHME estimates there were about 39 million people globally living with HIV in 2015, as compared to 28 million in 2000. In 2015, 41 per cent of the people living with HIV were using ART, as compared to less than 2 per

President Uhuru Kenyatta shares a hearty moment with a pupil last year at the Kenyatta International Conference Center during the launch of a HIV-AIDS program to increase the number of those on antiretroviral drugs in Kenya. cent in 2000. “We’re keeping people alive longer, and these numbers should give those using antiretroviral therapies considerable hope,” said IHME Associate Professor Haidong Wang who is also the lead author on the study. Such improvement, however, is still far away from the ambitious 90-90-90 goals set by the global community for the year 2020. Those goals aim for 90 per cent of people living with HIV knowing their HIV status, 90 per cent of people diagnosed with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy, and 90 per cent of people receiving antiretroviral therapy experiencing viral suppression. “This study provides critical health information

to help shape and support national and global decision-making,” said Peter Hayward, editor of The Lancet HIV. “The estimates are also key to strengthening accountability to ensure that promises made by politicians and policymakers with regard to specific HIV targets are being delivered,” he stated. The results of IHME’s study underscore the need for more effective efforts to prevent new infections, as well as additional funding for these efforts. According to Financing Global Health 2015, a report published in April by IHME, annual funding globally for HIV/AIDS peaked at

US$11.2 billion in 2013, but dropped to US$10.8 billion in 2015. With slowdown in the decline of new infections and in funding for HIV/AIDS, it will be challenging to achieve the goal set by the global community to end AIDS by 2030. The above study examines HIV mortality, prevalence, and incidence between 1980 and 2015, and is part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015, which provides comprehensive population health estimates on disease, injuries, and related risk factors. Commission told to take lead role in two-thirds gender Bill Legislators have challenged the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) to come up with proposals on how the two thirds gender rule can be achieved. Appearing before the joint parliamentary select committee yesterday, thePcommission’s chairperson Winfred Lichuma accused the MPs of taking matter casually yet it can render the next Parliament unconstitutional. “Any Kenyan can go to court next year and declare the next parliament unconstitutional for not adhering to the two thirds gender principal, it is therefore my submission that both the National Assembly and the senate find a mechanism of achieving this constitutional requirement,” Lichuma said She said that it’s unfortunate that after the matter failed in parliament in May this year and since then no mechanism has been put in place to achieve the two-thirds gender rule. “This matter is close to our heart as a gender a commission and most importantly it is a constitutionally requirement that must be adhered to,” Lichuma said. MPs, however, challenged the commission to be part of the solution by providing proposals on how the two thirds gender rule can be achieved. The select committee co-chair Kiraitu Murungi said “Can the gender commission be part of the solution and present a memorandum on how best this principle can be achieved,” Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama said

democracy should not be sacrificed at the altar of meeting the two thirds gender principle saying people should be allowed to elect their preferred leaders. “Kenya is a democratic country, nobody should be imposed on the people, women cannot be imposed on people and as such you should help us by coming up with proposals on how this gender principle can be achieved,” Muthama said. “We know women are endangered species in this country during election times, can your commission therefore help us by coming up with mechanisms on how to achieve the two thirds gender principled? Muthama asked. Nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi said parliament needs to have a different approach on

how to achieve the two-thirds gender principle. “Our colleagues in the National Assembly think this matter is a joke but it’s serious and at this point we need to have a different approach on how to achiever the two thirds gender representation,” Elachi said. Taita Taveta MP Dr Naomi Shaban, however, challenged women and persons with disability to compete for elective positions instead of waiting to be nominated under special needs category. “Political parties cannot be forced to nominate women or persons with special needs just to meet the two thirds gender principle, these people need to fight and compete for these positions,” Shaban said. She said political parties will only reward those people that are working hard for them during elections.

Trump promises a safer America

Donald Trump has vowed to tackle multiple threats facing the US, in his speech in Cleveland, Ohio accepting the Republican presidential nomination. “The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end,” he told the party convention. The businessman promised his presidency would usher in a new era putting America and ordinary people first. Mr Trump’s nomination has been clouded by the refusal of major party figures like Senator Ted Cruz to endorse him. Mr Cruz, who was his bitter rival during the primary contests, was booed off the stage by Trump supporters. Other Trump opponents such as members of the Bush family stayed away from the convention altogether. Mr Trump, a New York businessman who was written off when he launched his campaign a year ago, said he hoped his speech would ease tensions and unite the party. Speaking for well over an hour, he said the security of the country was under threat from Islamist radicals, undocumented immigrants and trade deals that failed American workers. “We will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace,” he said. “We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.” Addressing the “forgotten Americans” who worked hard but no longer had a voice, he said: “I am your voice.”

State policies suppressing women in trade, says Kituyi The Kenya government is hindering development by favouring cash crops mostly grown by men while ignoring those mostly grown by women, United Nation Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Dr Mukhisa Kituyi has said. Men in power are seeking international trade deals that favour them, leaving women with a limited market with which to sell their products, Dr. Kituyi explained in a recent address. Speaking during the East African regional women and trade programme as part of the ongoing UNCTAD 14 meeting in Nairobi, the Secretary General said the problem of careless trade liberalization is hurting women more than men since men are the ones who predominantly go out in search of trade deals. “Traditionally, in Kenya, commercial crops are men’s crops whereas food crops are women’s crop,” said Dr Kituyi. He said he was repulsed the government’s efforts, especially when seeking and negotiating in foreign markets where crops like coffee, tea, cotton and flowers (majorly farmed by men), leave kale and vegetables (mostly grown by women) to perish in local markets. “The crops produced by Kenyan women are facing stiff competion from cheap imported food in order to reward crops exported by men,” he lamented. He said the vice has been the greatest barrier hindering the country from empowering women who are crossing from subsistence agribusiness to

Countries agree on UN roadmap for elimination of harmful fishing subsidies More than 90 countries have signed a roadmap agreement seeking to end harmful fishing subsidies. The agreement follows a survey, which showed that fishing subsidies are estimated to be as high as $35 billion (Sh3.6 trillion) worldwide, of which $20 billion (Sh2 trillion) directly contributes to overfishing. The signing comes barely a week after Kenya’s Fisheries PS Micheni Ntiba said the country suffers from a shortage of 800,000 metric tonnes of fish, forcing the state to import the product from China, Uganda and India. FAO data has shown that the share of global fish stocks within biologically-sustainable levels has continued to decline, falling from 90 per cent under sustainable levels in 1974 to 69 per cent in 2013. Linked to this precipitous decline in fish stocks, global leaders last September agreed on a new sustainable development goal (SDG) on fisheries. Dubbed ‘Goal 14’, it sought to conserve and sustain use of the oceans, sea, and marine resources, thereby reducing subsidies on fisheries. “Getting 90 countries to sign up to a new initiative in such a short period of time shows both the need for this initiative and the power of UNCTAD in building

consensus for meaningful change”, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi said. “I welcome this collaboration with our colleagues at the FAO and UNEP, and look forward to engaging the fisheries sector with our trade and economics expertise,” he said. The roadmap includes a four-point plan that requires countries to provide information on what subsidies they are providing, prohibit those subsidies which contribute to overfishing and illegal fishing, introduce new policy tools to deter the introduction of new harmful subsidies as well as provide special and differential treatment to developing countries. Fisheries are a key source of protein and livelihoods for millions in coastal communities who are powerless by themselves to tackle the heavily subsidized industrial fishing boats and the overfishing that these involve. At the launch, UNCTAD Deputy Secretary-General Joakim Reiter said: “The status quo means that we have been watching a tragedy unfolding, without taking sufficient action. It is, frankly, a scandal”. @enock _x254

The Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC) in partnership with UKfunded FoodTrade East & Southern Africa (FoodTrade ESA) has announced plans to reduce trade barriers across the region, a move that seeks to create employment for thousands of people within the sub-Saharan sphere. The announcement follows the launch of a platform dubbed the G-Soko Grain Trade Business Directory on the sidelines of the fourteenth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD 14) in Nairobi, Kenya. The Directory was launched at a workshop focused on regional dialogue on the proposed Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) between the EAC, SADC and Comesa trading blocs, hosted in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Headlined by the representative of the EAC Secretary General, Mr Peter Kiguta (Director General, Customs & Trade), and CEO Comesa-ACTESA Mr Argent Chuula, the workshop provided a platform to deliberate on agricultural trade policies and food security in the proposed TFTA. Actionable policy recommendations to inform the ongoing TFTA negotiations from a food trade and food security perspective were also discussed amongst policymakers, the private sector and other relevant stakeholders from the three trading blocs (EAC, SADC and COMESA). Namibian President rebukes western nations for exploiting graft in developing countries There are attempts by developed nations to block the debate on issues relating to ill-gotten money sourced from developing countries, Namibian President Hage Geingob has said. Geingob made these remarks at the World Leaders Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, where he also rebuked the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for their destructive programmes in African countries. “There are attempts by developed countries to block any mention of issues related to tax avoidance and illicit capital outflows from developing nations,” he stated. Illicit financial flows concern money illegallyearned, transferred or used that crosses borders. The President has taken a keen interest in matters around illicit financial flows in recent months. Last year, the President told parliament that there is nothing he could do to curb issues such as transfer pricing, which is one of the tactics used by companies to avoid paying taxes. The Head of State has reminded fellow leaders that one key source of funding which should be explored with urgency is the need to curb illicit financial outflows. “It is estimated that up to 60 per cent of these illicit outflows originate from

tax avoidance and evasion,” Geingob said. “The total amount of illicit outflows is much higher than the total donor assistance to the African continent. Tax administration to improve compliance is, therefore, required. In parallel, cooperation across borders is needed to follow and retrieve illicit outflows,” he stressed. However, he has accused developed countries of double standards.“Developed countries preach fair play, but in actual practice do not play fair when they are negotiating with developing countries. The playing field is always tilted in their favour,” he added. The President said UNCTAD could be the perfect platform to discuss issues such as tax avoidance. Geingob told African leaders to be vigilant and to stand against attempts by some countries to downgrade the mandate of UNCTAD or outsource its responsibilities to other multilateral agencies such as the World Bank and IMF which are “famous for their destructive structural adjustment programmes in African countries”. Geingob promised leaders in Kenya that Namibia wants to become the most accountable and transparent country in Africa by 2020. @enock _x254

Mining Ministry receives Sh3bn for Airborne Survey

Kenya’s Mining Ministry has been allocated Sh3 billion in the 2016/17 fiscal year to carry out an Airborne Survey, Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu has said. Speaking during an event dubbed the County Government of Taita Taveta Investors Round Table Conference (CGTTIRTC) in Nairobi, the CS confirmed that the said aerial geophysical survey would identify areas with mineral deposits, a move that seeks to lure more investors not only in Taita Taveta County, but across the nation. He added that the move is intended to provide a detailed geological mapping and mineral resource assessment to drive growth within the industry while revving up the country’s economy. Kazungu thanked the National Treasury for their support, saying the Ministry had requested for Sh6 billion to carry out the survey but received only Sh3 billion, saying they will work with what they have to ensure the Ministry achieves its goals. The CS said reviving the aerial survey project, which covers the entire country, is a crucial move for the government and will enable the state to have a detailed database of potential minerals to be marketed to both local and foreign

Methodist Church Holdings conference, centre upgrade will give KICC a run for it

Chairman Mukaba Matiri of the Methodist Recreation and Conference Centre.

The Methodist recreation and conference centre has set its sights on meeting national conference centre standards within six months at an estimated cost of Sh15 million. Once complete, the centre, a subsidiary of the multibillion-shilling organisation, Methodist Church Holdings, is likely to rival KICC, one of the country’s leading conference facilities. The centre comes at a time when the country’s conference sector is experiencing a boom as international delegates and representatives flock into the country for high profile meetings aimed at driving economic growth and development. The conferencing industry has been identified as a key driver in the country’s efforts to boost tourism numbers to Kenya. As part of its initiative, Methodist Church Holdings is seeking to increase its delegate holding capacity to 2,000 up from the current 1,400 as part of its turnaround strategy, which include creating a state of the art conference

rooms. The aforementioned facility will incorporate Simultaneous Interpretation Equipment (SIE) with the capability of translating up to 7 languages, financial facility points, and expansive grounds, as well as ample and secure parking to reflect the diversity of accommodating international corporate entities. Speaking in Nairobi yesterday, Board of Trustee Chairman Mukaba Matiri further revealed that the facility is set to own one of the biggest wedding grounds across the East African region, coupled with a leading juice processing parlour and a world class swimming pool. “Our focus now is to get to the international arena through what we offer here. In six months, we should be competing with the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC),” Mr Mukaba told X news while making the announcements. Mukaba explained that despite security threats that nearly crumbled the tour and hospitality index, his facility has

KeMU ranked among region’s top as varsity rolls out digital campus Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) has been ranked among the African region’s top educators just as the institution rolls out its Digital Campus Platform. The University has seen a rapid growth in student enrolment over the past few years with numbers having hit the 9,500 mark by 2010. KeMU, a chartered private university founded by the Methodist Church in Kenya, has since been touted as one of the country’s leading Universities. “KeMU is an international university,” explains KeMU Chief Marketing Officer, Dr. Nancy Rintari. “We take students from every corner of this world,” added the KeMU Alumnus, who noted that the institution has produced a number of industry leaders and pace-setters. Speaking during a recent exchange, Dr. Rintari added that the institution has catered to students from over 30 countries across the globe. “Our quality is one of the best in this country. Some of the leaders we have produced are some of the best in this country,” Dr. Rintari said. “We have a digital platform and when we are digital, we are global.” Her sentiments come just as the country’s youth unemployment rate is at an all-time high and undergraduates from various institutions continue to protest the standard of education that they are offered. “Our students are some of the most satisfied. Our students get good quality education,” noted Dr. Rintari, who reiterated that KeMU’s standards ensure that graduates are “industry-competitive.” “We take care of or students. Whatever we promise the students, we give them,” added the Alumnus, who attained her 1st and 2nd Degree at the institution. The Commissioner for University Education

KeMU Chief Marketing Officer Dr. Nancy Rintari recently ranked KeMU as one of the best universities in the country. “Many of our courses run up to PhD. We have some of the best ICT courses in the country. We have a farm used by students for Agriculture. We are a very rich university,” Dr. Rintari commented. In 2013, KeMU won the ‘Best Institution of Higher Learning’ award at the Meru Agricultural Show of Kenya (ASK), along with four other accolades and honours. The institution has since been feted on several occasions, positioning itself as a top tier learning facility.

He now wants the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and the government to address infrastructural challenges upcountry, a fact he says could open doors for more domestic tourism and revamped hotel industry at the devolved units. “There is huge potential at the county level. KTB should invoke the government to address the infrastructural challenges that locks us out of business,” continued Mukaba. Other than creating thousands of jobs for the local population, Methodist Church Holdings offers sponsorship to hundreds of needy students and support programs, especially in the rural areas.

Methodist Church of Kenya Presiding Bishop Joseph Ntombura.

Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) has called on its graduates to drive growth and encourage change within their society. KeMU Chancellor, Rev Joseph Ntombura has urged the institution’s Alumni to set the pace in revving up community development. “I must remind the graduates that they are a powerful young generation in human history,” said the Chancellor, who was speaking ahead of today’s graduation ceremony. “You are powerful because you have highly developed technology at your command. That presents you with an opportunity for all–round growth – career, personal and social. This is your opportunity to use that power to drive growth and change in society.

Missing an opportunity such as this would be a lost chance,” he added. Rev Ntombura noted that the members of KeMU’s Board of Trustees, University Council, Senate and Management were pleased that this year, KeMU is graduating a substantial number of students. He said that the affair was evidence of a satisfactory result of tireless effort in providing guidance and support in pursuit of the highest education quality for the benefit of the nation. “I wish to assure all the stakeholders that the teamwork demonstrated will continue to be improved in order that KeMU remains a leading learning institution so that the motto ‘The Future is here’ is kept relevant,” Rev Ntombura

reiterated. “At KeMU you have learnt the principles of integrity, innovation, good governance and patriotism,” he said addressing this year’s graduates. “I appeal to you to make these principles a part of your daily life and apply them in all situations where the Lord shall place you. Your newly acquired education will serve you well throughout your life, and the University friendships and memories are ones I hope you return to often. Remember your graduation ceremony is not the end of a long journey. It is the beginning of a longer one which will make university life seem like a little speck in the bigger scheme of things life will offer,” the Chancellor added.

KeMU challenged to take advantage of the liberalised education system Kenya Methodist University has been challenged to take advantage of the liberalised varsity education system to increase opportunities for their students and graduates. The Alumni chairperson Brighton Ochieng’ says the university stands to gain a lot if the varsity adapts new trends of developing skills and knowledge. In an interview with X-News, Mr Ochieng’ said students need to be linked to the outside world before they graduate from the institutions of higher learning for easier transition to the job market. “In the present problematic job market that we live in. No longer can graduates from even most elite institutions, be confident of finding a meaningful job after graduating,” he said. Ochieng’ wants the institution management to closely work with alumni as they are good ambassadors of the school.

He said that since they are involved in carrying the good image of the university, they stand a better chance of influencing decision both at the institutional job and market levels. “As a graduate of this university, we know how the university has played a role in our career development, we would want to play a role in transferring the same skill and knowledge” he noted. The Chairperson held that alumni are willing to talk to recent and soon-to-be graduates about career options, “We hope to create a career network that will give our graduates a leg up as they transition from school to work,” he explained. Ochieng told the university to provide greater value to the students and do more to demonstrate the value of our scholarly mission to those who might underwrite it.

ow did you get your start in music? I started music when I was in high school. I was actually studying music when I was there and after I finished with that, while I was just out and about I met up with H_art The Band. They encouraged me to pursue my music further and to go mainstream with it. Exactly how did you meet the band? On the street! At Aga Khan Walk, I played their guitar a little bit and they told me they didn’t have a bassist so I volunteered for the gig. Although at the time I had no idea how to play the bass, I only knew the acoustic guitar. So I just started practicing and learned how to play with the rest of the band, everything fell into place after that. Are you done with H_art The Band? With the band, I was mostly playing for them the bass guitar and singing background vocals in some of their songs. We are great friends but we’re not necessarily a band altogether. I’m just the bassist. As a solo artiste I’m Bensoul. Will you continue working with them in the future? Yes, definitely. I’ve been with them since the beginning and when they hold live shows I still play with them even though I’m a solo act. We help each other out with the music and other projects so we’ll definitely continue working together. Are there any other instruments that you play?

Gor Mahia struggling to fill Aucho gap WEEKEND EDITION, JULY 22-24, 2016

He has preferred to deploy Ernest Wendo in the deep midfield role with Kahata further up the pitch, a combination that has failed to produce results as the two struggle to hold onto possession. They both lack the vision of Aucho and his tactical reading of the game which allows him to control the tempo of a match and even become a hard tackler when need be. Then Gor assistant Coach Bobby Ogolla described Aucho as; “the complete midfield player. He controls the pace of the game as he wants and as Gor Mahia likes. He is our foundation,” he said last season. “He is elegant when need be and can also mix it up with some hard tackled when required to. It is hard to find his type,” he said. The former Tusker man irked Ze Maria for failure to return to the club after helping his national team beat Botswana 2-1 in a 2017 African Cup of Nations Qualifier last month where he scored the winning goal. He had 27 starts for Gor Mahia in the league last season and 2,477 minutes to his name, the best for a midfielder in the league. His discipline or lack of it notwithstanding, the player should have won the KPL midfielder MVP, at least many believe so. Against Ushuru last week, the taxmen overrun the midfield. They would have

walked away with all the three points had custodian Boniface Oluoch not been at his best, thwarting the home sides forays into his goal. But coach Ze Maria remains buoyant his charges will find their rhythm back. “No no no. There is nothing different because Khalid is not playing. The team is still okay,” the coach said when asked whether they are missing the former Tusker player. But he admitted there was a lack of synergy and coordination in the team. “There seems to be a problem with the team in terms of synergy and coordination and to be honest it is a concern not just for me but even for the players themselves. I have talked to them individually to get their points of view and perhaps we shall need to change a few things in the squad,” he said. The coach early this week cancelled the normal two-day rest for his players and summoned them for training just 24 hours after their 0-0 draw with Ushuru in a bid to re-sharpen ahead of this weekend’s matches. Gor’s next fixture is on Sunday against league strugglers City Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium. Aucho left Nairobi early yesterday for the trials with Scotland’s Aberdeen FC aboard KLM Airlines. @amos_x254

Former Gor Mahia midfielder Khalid Aucho who has since left K’Ogalo for trails with Scottish side Aberdeen FC.

The departure of midfield anchorman Khalid Aucho from Gor Mahia for trials in Scotland has left the Sportpesa Premier League Champions with a huge gap to fill. Since the resumption of the second-half of the league, Gor has only won once and drawn two of their three matches. The match against Thika United in Thika was the first outing without the Ugandan and while Ze Maria’s side scraped to a 2-1 win, they were forced to defend for huge swathes of the second half. In May, Aucho helped K’Ogalo to four straight victories in the league before the June break, scoring once and providing three assists during that run. He was deservedly named the player of the month then. And just before the league resumed during the Super Eight semis, he was also instrumental as Gor knocked out league leaders Tusker out of the competition with 3-0 aggregate win. But his services have been sourly missed in the days since. Last weekend, Gor clearly struggled against Ushuru with goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch forced to make reflex saves to earn his side a point against a rampant Ushuru FC. Ze Maria’s decision to leave Aucho’s longtime midfield partner Collins Okoth out of the match day squad altogether last week only aggravated the gap, which Ushuru duly exploited.

SPORT 15 WEEKEND EDITION, JULY 22-24, 2016

Leopards v Sony among four local league matches to be aired live this weekend Four matches will be aired live this weekend as the local league enters its game week 19 tomorrow. Mathare United will host Thika United at the Nyayo National Stadium tomorrow from 2pm in the first game to be aired live before paving way for the second featuring AFC Leopards and Sony Sugar at the same venue. The slum boys are winless in their last two matches following a 1-0 loss in Kisumu to Western Stima and last week’s 1-1 draw with Leopards. But coach Francis Kimanzi has an opportunity to correct that run against Thika tomorrow and The James Nandwa coached side are yet to find a footing and remain winless in their last three matches, including an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to AFC Leopards two weeks ago. AFC Leopards have been handed a boost after forward Paul Kiongera resumed full training with the rest of his team mates on Thursday morning in readiness for the tie against Sony Sugar. Kiongera, a June acquisition from Tanzanian side Simba SC was stretchered off the pitch and into the

ambulance last Sunday in the club’s 1-1 draw with Mathare United after appearing to have snapped his ankle. “He has trained fully with the rest of the players today and he seems very okay. We will see whether he will be okay to start against Sony or not,” Leopards head coach Ivan Minnaert said. The live action on Sunday will be at Machakos Stadium and Nyayo National Stadium, where struggling Sofapaka will trade tackles with Tusker FC starting at 2pm before paving way for Gor Mahia who will be hosting City Stars later at Nyayo. Gor will face the giant killers on a day coach Jose Marcelo ‘Ze Maria’ will be seeking to regain his winning ways and reduce the five-point gap with Tusker at the summit of the league. The record 15-time champions have dropped points twice consecutively, being held to a 1-1 draw by Kakamega Homeboyz in Kisumu before playing to a barren draw against Ushuru FC last weekend. Gor would have bridged the gap to a mere two points had they beaten the Ken Kenyatta’s side and ‘Ze Maria’ was equally irked with the result saying;

“I am disappointed. We should have capitalized on Tusker’s slip and reduced the gap.” With 12 matches to go before the season closes, the Brazilian tactician beams with confidence the team has what it takes to get back to the top of the standings. Other matches set to be played this weekend include Chemelil who will be hosting Kakamega Homeboyz, while Western Stima will welcome Posta Rangers at Moi Stadium Kisumu on Saturday. On Sunday, Ulinzi Stars hosts Ushuru at Afraha Stadium. Coach Robert Matano is demanding a response from his side who remain winless in the last three matches. Ulinzi Stars have dropped to fourth on the standings after starting the second leg at position two following back to back losses to Tusker FC and Mathare United, coupled with last weekend’s draw away to City Stars. “It was a bad day for us; we lost our rhythm and concentration, coach Matano said of the draw at City Stars last weekend. United take on City as Mounrinho and Pep renew rivalries The first taste of Manchester rivalry will be served on Monday when new bosses Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola lead their charges against each other in the International Champions Cup in China. Mourinho and Guardiola are not big fans of each other and had steamy touchline exchanges during their time in La Liga when the Manchester United boss was in charge of Real Madrid with his opposite number then at Barcelona. The will however face each other for the first time not at Old Trafford or the Etihad, but in the Bird’s Nest in Beijing, a slightly curious setting for this face-off, but one that could see the two managers’ earliest exchange of jabs. This will be part of both teams’ pre-season tours and might not elicit that rivalry as such. Manchester United beat Wigan 2-0 in their first pre-season friendly while Manchester City lost 1-0 to Pep Guardiola’s former employers, Bayern Munich. United are without their summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Germany’s Bastian Sweignsteiger as Mourinho opted to excuse players who were involved in the Euro 2016 beyond the last 16. They will face Borussia

Dortmund today before taking on Manchester City on Monday and then Galatasary five days later. Manchester United have been dismall since the exit of manager Alex Ferguson as manager in 2013. Under the Scot, they won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League titles in the space of 26 years. “It is very important to forget the past three years and to focus on good times,” new boss Mourinho said. “I think that’s what everybody wants at the club, it is what every fan around the world wants but at the same time I think it is intelligent to understand that times are different and realities are different. “I don’t think it’s possible for Manchester United to win so much in the next 20 years than in the past 20 years. “There was a very important evolution in our Premier League. “I want to bring the motivational levels up and bring the confidence back, but be intelligent and know the reality we face in the Premier League is different than 10, 20 years ago.”
