Clinton smashes glass ceiling with Democratic nomination

Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton gestures to supporters and delegates when she arrived to speak on stage during the final day of the Democratic National Convention at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, early today. illary Clinton beamed with emotion as she took the convention stage to become the first woman ever to accept a major U.S. party’s presidential nomination. “It is with humility, determination and boundless confidence in America’s promise that I accept your nomination for President of the United States,” Clinton said to thunderous applause at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Clinton appeared almost overcome with emotion as she entered the arena to loud cheers and embraced her daughter, Chelsea, who introduced her as the next President of the United States. She took a deep breath to collect herself as delegates in the crowd were in tears. “When there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit,” she said. Clinton quickly reached out to disappointed Bernie Sanders voters. With the Vermont senator watching from the arena, Clinton told his supporters “I’ve heard you. Your cause is our cause.” And she took an early swipe at Republican nominee Donald Trump. “Don’t let anyone tell you we don’t have what it takes,” Clinton said. “Most of all, don’t believe anyone who says: ‘I alone can fix it,’” a reference to Trump’s acceptance speech last week. She told Americans the nation is facing a “moment of reckoning” as powerful forces try to tear it apart. “Powerful forces are threatening to pull us apart,” she said. “Bonds of trust and respect are fraying. Jubilee, Cord differ on IEBC restructuring Jubilee and Cord coalitions have differed sharply over how to appoint new commissioners to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). While Jubilee wants the process to be non-political, CORD favours the appointments of the selection panel to be based on individual political parties’ numerical strength in parliament. Cord lawyers Paul Mwangi and Antony Oluoch told the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee tasked with negotiating critical reforms on the electoral process, that involving the political parties will help bring accountability and much needed reforms in the poll team. “We want the custodians of our election to be accountable to the public so that we minimize the issue of mistrust among the commissioners,” Mwangi said. But Jubilee swiftly objected the proposal saying if political parties are allowed to participate in the selection of new commissioners, assuming the current team will vacate office, then the likelihood of disagreement will be very high. “We will not want to put this country in any kind unnecessary anxiety or disquiet just because a commissioner has decided to play cat and mouse games with our elections,” The National Alliance (TNA) Secretary General Onyango Oloo told the committee, co-chaired by Senators James Orengo (Siaya) and Kiraitu Murungi (Meru). Although the two coalitions would later agree that IEBC commissioners should be given a soft landing in case of their voluntary exit from office,
Cord lawyer Paul Mwangi (center) gives his views to the Joint Select Committee at County Hall yesterday. He is accompanied by the coalitions Oduor Ong’wen and Antony Oluoch.
each held a different opinion on a process of the removal of electoral commissioners. The opposition representatives maintained that IEBC bosses should leave in the interest of the public. Both Mr Mwangi and Mr Oluoch said that public confidence in the commission has irreversibly waned, and it would be “suicidal” to let the current commissioners conduct the next elections.
Pay State suppliers, Cabinet orders The Cabinet on Thursday directed that all payments due to government suppliers – with preference to women, youth and persons with disabilities – be made without further delay. Under Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO), 30 percent of government tenders should, as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013, go to the three special interest groups. “I don’t see the reason why we can keep purchasing things from outside when we have them here. I know most have done so which encourages corruption. We must support our local SMEs,” he said last year when he called on women to be more aggressive in ‘chasing’ the tenders given the still few number of women who’ve taken advantage of the edge he gave them. At Cabinet’s Thursday sitting, it was also resolved that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government and all law enforcement agencies should prosecute all those who’ve invaded private ranches and farms in Laikipia, Kilifi and other parts of the country. The forming of a joint venture between the government and De La Rue Currency and security printing company was also approved at Thursday’s meeting. “Under the new arrangement, a special purpose vehicle will be formed through which the Government will acquire a 40 percent shareholding in De La Rue Kenya Ltd. This will enable the government to earn revenue from the venture.”
“We are not seeking to establish criminal or civil responsibility against any person. We need to show you that IEBC has performed so badly that you will not want to entrust them with an election. We are trying to show that in public interest, the commission must be reconstituted,” said Mr Mwangi. “We cannot approach the issue through the provisions of Article 251. These are unprecedented circumstances and the way to go is through a negotiated
settlement,” Mr Oluoch added as he backed his colleague. Asked on whether the removal of the commissioners can be done outside the provisions of the Constitution, Cord said that the circumstances that led to the standoff on the poll body are special and peculiar. “We cannot approach this issue through Article 251 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010. These are special and peculiar circumstances that call for
a different approach,” lawyer Oluoch explained. Further, the opposition recommends that the IEBC secretariat be vetted by the new commissioners. But Mr Oloo accompanied who was accompanied by URP chairman Barry Shill told the select committee that while they do not harbour any issue with the Isaack Hassan led team, they would favour the route of Article 251 of the constitution that states clear procedures for exit from office. The Jubilee team said it would favour a tribunal route in the removal of the commissioners because the IEBC commissioners have been victims of “smear” campaigns. “We in the Jubilee coalition are curious just like other Kenyans and would like to know the specific allegations made against the commissioners of the IEBC,” Oloo told the committee. “However, what we know is that there has been rather vague, but cleverly orchestrated and sustained smear campaign designed to destroy the public’s confidence in the IEBC. Their nefarious campaign has been a roaring success,” he added. Barry Shill, who is also the MP for Fafi constituency, held should any of commissioners consider exiting office voluntarily, they should be given their full benefits. “Any commissioner, including the commission secretary who chooses to voluntarily retire should do so with full benefits upon resignation in line with the legal opinion and any guidelines offered by the Attorney General and the National Treasury,” he said. @hillary_x254
Government rules out early closure of schools Deputy President William Ruto and Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i have ruled out proposals calling for the closure of schools, in spite of the wave of unrest that has hit many secondary schools. The Deputy President stated that the measures being implemented by Ministry of Education will continue and asked stakeholders to support government. “A joint committee appointed by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government move fast to conclude investigations into the 2016 school fires to reveal the root cause(s) of the unrest in affected schools. The committee should develop a clear implementation matrix for all their recommendations,” read a joint statement released after a meeting between the representatives of the Ministry of Education, the clergy and Kenya Secondary School Heads Association, Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association and National Cohesion and Integration Commission. Matiang’i urged school heads to finalise the normal school calendar to allow students to sit the end-of-term exams. Public schools are expected to end the second term on August 12. The consultative forum also agreed to convene a National Stakeholders’ Conference on Schools Management on September 23,

to deliberate on, among others, how best to create a conducive learning environment. CORD MPs led by Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetangula had earlier called for the closure of the schools in order to avoid further destruction of property. “As the CORD coalition, we demand the ongoing school fires be declared a national disaster, an immediate closure of all schools to avoid further inexplicable destruction of property, the country be told who the perpetrators of these acts are, action be taken and a proper mechanism be put in place to
ensure such incidents do not happen again in future,” said the CORD Co-principal. Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) had had also suggested that the schools be closed because students are unhappy with extending of terms. Matiang’i termed the Union officials suggestion a knee-jerk reaction which cannot bring long term solutions to the ongoing burning of schools across the country. Doctors now allowed advertise services Medical practitioners can now freely advertise services and their private health institutions following new regulations gazetted by the government. However, the regulations bar the practitioners from participating in health-related advertisement, endorsing medical products, procedures and treatment services not allowed in the country. “A practitioner or health institution shall not directly or indirectly permit any promotion which maybe reasonably regarded as calculated to attract patients, clients or business except as provided under this rules. The advertisements shall only contain information about services offered in Kenya,” reads part of the regulation gazetted by Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu. Doctors have also been allowed to expose the bodies that authorised their practice, year of registration, and their academic qualifications and areas of specialization. The language of business, hours of operation and a statement of the position currently or previously held by the practitioner within the
institution can also run. Separately, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDB) has lifted the ban on medical camps arranged by foreign doctors in the country under tough conditions, including them being free and liable for misdiagnosis. Board chairman George Magoha, has said that all foreign and local organisers who defy the set rules face cancellation of their licences or a jail term. This follows a gazette notice issued by the board to prevent fleecing of Kenyans through referral to hospitals abroad for treatment that is available locally. “Organisers must, for instance, provide a professional indemnity cover from a recognised organisation to be used in the case where a claim is made against mistakes or mistreatment of patients during a medical camp,” said Magoha. The new directive comes barely a month after the Health Principal Secretary, Nicholas Muraguri over-ruled the KMPDB’s stand on medical camps. The board’s decision was reached at after numerous surgical conditions that do not require special operations were referred to India

in return for kickbacks of up to Sh200, 000 per referral. It is reported that some select health facilities still conducted the medical camps during the suspension period. The mandate of licensing or lifting a ban on medical camps solely lies with KMPDB. Unlike before where a medical or
dental practitioner would only be required to acquire a Sh5, 000 licence from the regulator, KMPDB’s new rules require that, among others, a credentialing fees of up to Sh100, 000 be paid. The licence to operate is to be applied in not less than a month before the start of the medical camp. @wilson_x254

Clinton smashes glass ceiling with Democratic nomination Continued from page 1
It truly is up to us. We have to decide whether we all will work together so we all can rise together.” President Barack Obama congratulated Clinton at the conclusion of her speech. “Great speech,” he tweeted. “She’s tested. She’s ready. She never quits. That’s why Hillary should be our next @POTUS. (She’ll get the Twitter handle, too)” As she makes history by accepting her role as the first female nominee of a major political party, Clinton is offering herself as the epitome of steady leadership to a nation that is anxious and looking for reassurance. Clinton is working to persuade Americans that she understands their frustration and economic anxiety at a time when many of them still do not trust her. Her primetime televised address is especially crucial because she has not so far generated the kind of passion among her supporters that Trump has among his backers by channeling anger about the direction of the country. Clinton admitted that many people did not know what to make of her and highlighted her struggles to reveal her private, inner self to the public. “The truth is, through all these years of public service, the ‘service’ part has always come easier to me than the ‘public’ part,” Clinton said. She wove a parable of her wholesome middle class upbringing and said her family were builders of the American dream and not people “with their name on big buildings”, another dig at Trump. Clinton took pains to reach out to white blue-collar workers, many of whom have been left behind by economic globalization and technological change and have been attracted by Trump’s anti-elite message. “Right now, an awful lot of people feel there is less and less respect for the work they do,”

While Clinton and President Barack Obama have argued that ISIS is on the run, the economy is on the upswing, and Americans are safer than they have been in years, they are struggling to counter the dark image that Trump has painted of a nation in decline, chaos and disorder. Amid charges by Republicans that the optimistic mood of the Democratic convention has ignored the threat from ISIS and Islamic terrorism, Clinton will be specific about the global national security
threats that loom. “Anyone reading the news can see the threats and turbulence we face,” Clinton said. “From Baghdad to Kabul, to Nice to Paris and Brussels. From San Bernardino to Orlando, we’re dealing with determined enemies who must be defeated. No wonder people are anxious and looking for reassurance -looking for steady leadership.” Ahead of her speech, retired four star General John Allen, the former head of US and international forces in Afghanistan, delivered a powerful speech in which he told delegates that Clinton would be “exactly the Commander-in-Chief America needs.”
Boost for women aspirants in 2017 Women advocacy institution, Kenya Women Holding (KWH), has promised to sponsor women in next year’s general election to ensure they win enough seats to accomplish the two-thirds gender rule. KWH Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Riria (pictured below) has said that the institution will position and empower about 4200 to be on the ballot in 2017. There were about 5000 aspirants gunning for various positions in the 2013 general elections with women making up a paltry 19 percent. It was obvious then that the two-thirds representation in parliament could not be achieved. A Bill seeking to enact the provision also flopped on the floor of the House early this year. And while speaking to X-News on the sidelines of the institution’s AGM yesterday, Dr. Riria regretted that Parliament was unable to spearhead the empowerment of women. “Most of the time women aspirants don’t even get the chance to be on the ballot, it is important that political parties put more effort in the implementation of the letter and spirit of the constitution and nominate more women candidates,” Dr Riria said. “At Kenya Women Holding, our core business is empowering and equipping women with skills and we are going to forge ahead based on this fact to work with women who are seeking elective leadership at all levels countrywide to ensure over 30% of women in Kenya occupy the elective positions,’ she added. Article 81 (b) which refers to the general principles of Kenya’s electoral system states ‘the electoral system shall comply with the principle that not more than two-thirds of the members of elective public bodies shall be of the same gender. And it is based on this provision that the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has warned that the next parliament risk being dissolved if it doesn’t attain the two thirds principle. But with KWH coming in to help women, there seems to be some hope. “We will not discriminate and will work with women from all political parties as well as independent candidates to deliver the promise enshrined in our constitution,” Dr Riria added.
Envoy: Parallel armies cause of South Sudan conflicts The elusive peace in South Sudan can only be achieved if the forces allied to Riek Machar and those under President Salva Kiir are brought under one command, South Sudanese ambassador to Kenya Jimmy Deng Makuach (pictured) has said. Currently, the South Sudanese army is divided into two with a faction of the troops loyal to President Kiir and the other only taking commands from Riek Machar. And ambassador Deng Makuach warned that if the two forces continue to operate independently, then it would not be possible to have peace in South Sudan. In an interview with X-News,
Makuach said there is no way a country can have two Commandersin-Chief with each having his own army. “Having two armies in the same country each taking command from different people is just a recipe for chaos. We hope that with the new Vice President in office, we will solve the situation,” Makuach who was only recently posted to Nairobi, said. “The issue needs to be relooked at, actually it’s the main cause of war in South Sudan,” the ambassador added. The ambassador said during the signing of the peace agreement in August last year, the government expressed reservation over the clause to have two armies in the same
country but they were dismissed. “We proposed to IGAD that two armies under different commands cannot operate in the same country and peace achieved but they insisted that Machar must have his army, we can all now see the results,” he argued. Soldiers loyal to Riek Machar clashed with those of President Kiir as the two were having a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Juba as fresh conflict broke out. Dr Machar has since been replaced as First Vice President after an order by Kiir for him to return to the capital elapsed last Saturday. @sam_x254

Kenya maintains top spot in Visa’s Integration Index E.A Kenya has maintained its top spot in Visa’s Integration Index for East Africa. Launched in 2014, the ‘Visa Africa Integration Index’ measures the degree of economic integration within key trade corridors of Sub-Saharan Africa, namely East Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. Visa has thus launched its updated ‘Africa Integration Index’ to reassess the progress Africa has made in economic integration, a vital ingredient for socioeconomic advancement. Together with its partners, global payments company, Visa reaches 500 million people in Africa. “Our objective was to construct an index for a number of selected sub-Saharan African countries to measure their global and regional integration,” Jabu Basopo, General Manager for Visa in East and Southern Africa, said. He noted that the African economy is currently enjoying its sixteenth consecutive year of best growth period on record. Since 2000, the continent has maintained annual economic growth averaging in excess of five percent. This has enabled the African economy to outperform the global average by more than two percent per annum since the turn of the millennium. However, in recent times, and since the publication of the Visa Africa Integration Index (2014), a growing concern has emerged that the African economy has reached the end of this period of rapid economic growth. ‘Senator Keg’ sales help lift EABL profit up by Sh0.8bn
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has recorded a Sh0.8 billion (7 per cent) jump in profit for the financial year ended June 30, 2016. The beer maker posted a profit of Sh10.3 billion compared to Sh9.5 billion during the previous financial period. EABL’s outgoing Managing Director Charles Ireland says the appetising results were largely driven by recovery of ‘Senator’ beer in Kenya and innovation across all markets. “This has been an exciting year on many fronts and we are pleased to have delivered solid results. We still have a host of opportunities to unlock, not least in tapping an increasingly discerning customer base,” Ireland said in a statement issued yesterday. However, during the period under review, the growth was slower due in part to a decline in the brewer’s South Sudan business. As a result, the group’s net sales remained flat. Most of EABL’s product segments experienced a jump in emerging beer sales, buoyed by the Senator brand in Kenya, Ngule in Uganda and Pilsner in Tanzania, with mainstream spirits growing by 22 per cent.
Minimal growth was experience in premium beer, which posted a growth in sales of 2 per cent and Ready-to-Drink (RTD), whose sales jumped 3 per cent. Mainstream beer was down 6 per cent while premium and emerging spirits were down 9 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively. “I am confident that the investment we have made in our systems, brands and people will help us to take full advantage of these opportunities. We will continue to focus on innovation and prudent cost management and remain flexible to anticipate and respond to external factors in the region,” Ireland added. Cash flow from operating activities increased by 32 per cent to Sh27.9 billion as a result of better than forecasted Senator volume, coupled with efficient management of working capital. The Board of Directors has recommended a final dividend of Sh5.50 per share. The 2016 annual dividend remains unchanged from last year at Sh7.50 per share. @enock _x254

More than 30,000 sorghum farmers have benefited since the rebound of East Africa Breweries Ltd’s (EABL’s) ‘Senator’ drink, the beer maker said. Kenya Breweries Ltd (KBL) Managing Director Jane Karuku said since Senator’s comeback, farmers have been contracted to supply the raw material needed for the production of the drink. She said Senator has also created more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs in Kenya. Speaking during a meeting with journalists in Nairobi, Karuku further said EABL has injected over Sh1 billion to continue helping both the brand and the farmers. On his part, Gyorgy Geiszel, Group Finance Director said EABL recorded a profit of Sh10.3 billion majorly driven by the re-introduction of Senator in Kenya. Geiszel was speaking during the release of group’s financial results. EABL data shows that an increase in excise duty affected the sale of Tusker, Kenya’s favourite brand. “For every single bottle of Tusker which goes for Sh140, 40 per cent which is Sh68 goes to the taxman,” said Karuku. She ascertained that Tusker remained a major contributor to Kenya’s revenue. EALB has urged all stakeholders not to sell alcohol to under-age consumers as schools move into the long holiday season. Out of the profits posted, Kenya contributed the largest accounting for 71 per cent, Uganda 16 per cent, whereas Tanzania contributed just 10 per cent. EABL has injected Sh51 billion in revenue into the East African market.
KCB to determine Chase Bank’s future as it unlocks frozen billions Chase Bank patrons will soon be able to access a larger portion of their deposits as the lender’s receiver manager, KCB carries out a due diligence report on the financial institution. KCB yesterday revealed that it will determine the future ownership and funding of Chase Bank Limited which is under receivership. KCB Group CEO and MD Joshua Oigara said this new phase of Chase Bank’s recovery journey will focus on having a framework that will allow the bank to deal with maturing deposits, taking in new deposits, opening up new lending and conducting a due diligence on Chase Bank. The second phase will enable customers start unlocking part of the billions of shillings in deposits, which are frozen by law. “We intend to close this in the shortest time possible to relieve pressure from customers. We are now keen on looking deeper into the business to determine the next step of action in as far as bringing Chase back is full operations is concerned,” Oigara said. “This will then help settle the question of how the balance sheet of Chase Bank will be funded going into the future, and who will be the owner. The ownership, of
which KCB will be one of the interested bidders, will be determined independently by CBK.” KCB Bank Kenya --the troubled lender’s receiver manager appointed by the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC)--said the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has appointed an independent international firm to conduct the due diligence and valuation of Chase Bank (IR). Mr Oigara said KCB remains an interested party in Chase, adding that a conclusive decision will be made after the due diligence is completed. At the moment, the receiver manager is working with KDIC and CBK to untangle several regulatory and legal ambiguities that do not make it clear whether big depositors can have earlier access to their money, or whether they can offset their loans. “These challenges have been borne out of the fact that the laws of placing banks in receivership never envisaged the receiver managing the firm to re-open them for business,” said Mr. Paul Russo, the Receiver manager appointed by KCB. “We have received tremendous support from customers, depositors and other stakeholders, ” said Mr Oigara. @kevin _x254

Bill capping lending rates bad for customers: Bankers
WEEKEND EDITION, JULY 29-31, 2016
The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to dismiss a law seeking to cap lending rates, saying the Bill would disadvantage small borrowers. According to KBA CEO Habil Olaka, while the proposed Amendments were introduced with good intentions for the public, the move to regulate the cost of loans stands against the tenets of a free
market economy. “At first glance, capping interest rates looks like something that will benefit consumers; however, on the contrary, it will disadvantage the very consumers it seeks to protect,” Olaka said. He said individuals, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) would be locked out of accessing mortgage facilities should the President
ascent the Bill. “This move will lock out many people from accessing loans hence limiting their access to banking services,” added Olaka. The so called Banking (Amendment) Bill was sponsored by MP Jude Njomo and received unanimous support from Members Of Parliament at the National Assembly on Wednesday at its third

and final reading stage and is now awaiting the President’s approval. The legislators said their attempt was to freeze lending banking rates that have caused misery and suffering to some of the families. “I want to support this bill as it seek to cushion majority of Kenyans who have been exploited by financial institutions,” Suba MP John Mbadi said in support of the motion. If it is passed, chief executives of commercial banks and other lending institutions failing to comply with the law will face a Sh1 million fine or imprisonment for a term of no less than one year or both. The Bill received overwhelming support by MPs during a debate that saw some legislators reprimanding banks and other financial institutions of harbour cartel-like behaviour to exploit Kenyans. The Bill, which now awaits Presidential assent, has also pegged the minimum interest granted on a deposit held in an interest-earning account to at least 70 per cent of the base rate set and published by the Central Bank. The current rate is set at 11 per cent and should the Bill become law, banks would charge up to 15 per cent. If Kenyatta endorses the Bill, it could slash lending rates by up to half. Some borrowers are currently paying as high as 24 per cent for short to mediumterm loans. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics indicates that SME’s play a critical role, not only in the banking sector, but also in the development of the country’s economy. @enock_x254
Uber slashes cab prices for Nairobi residents by 35pc Uber, an American-based multinational online transportation company with operations in Kenya, has announced a 35 per cent reduction in its prices that will benefit customers using its services in Nairobi. The company said the discounted prices were as a result of its effective and advanced technology that has seen a majority of Kenyans subscribe to the service. Uber Kenya’s General Manager, Nate Anderson revealed yesterday that the group will be offering value-added prices and that less time will be wasted in seeking their facilities. “With Uber, drivers don’t sit idle in a queue waiting for their next passenger and they travel as far, or as often with an empty car,” he said. More than one million trips have been made using Uber since their launch in January 2015. “The trips didn’t happen on a space rocket. They happened right here in cars on the streets of Nairobi, with more than 1,000 local drivers earning money as a result,” Anderson explained.
He stated that the older prices were based at Sh100 per kilometer and have now been reduced to Sh35 per kilometer. He further noted that Sh300 will be the minimum fare and that cancellations will cost Sh200. “Now we want to get even more business for our partners by dropping prices. After years of experience, including in cities like Lagos in Nigeria, we have learnt that price cuts boost demand so
more people request more rides with Uber, meaning drivers spend more time earning,” he added. The GM explained that the company is committed to making Uber the most affordable and safest option to move around Nairobi. “Our experience shows us we can make that happen while making Uber the best way for drivers to earn,” Anderson said. Uber has also partnered with oil and gas
company, Total to provide deals on fuel. “This partnership allows Nairobi drivers to receive a great discount off every litre of fuel and as an added extra, they can get a power wash for Sh200,” said Anderson. With these changes, the firm hopes to attract an even larger client base. @lenah_x254
BIZ BRIEFS Nema receives Sh1 billion to mitigate climate change The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) has received Sh1 billion from the Adaptation Fund to help in mitigation of Green House Gas Emissions in some parts of the country that are mostly affected. Speaking yesterday in Nairobi during the Second National Communication to the UN framework Convention on Climate Change, Prof. Geoffrey Wahungu Director General for Nema, said that more funds are needed as Global warming is a reality. He noted that the fund will go a long way by helping 14 communities that are more exposed to climate change, the communities include Western parts of Kenya like Budalangi that are mostly flooded, Coast province, Laikipia and Kajiado.
Plan to increase affordable electricity on course: Uhuru The Kenya government’s objective of increasing supply and reliability of electricity to all Kenyans at an affordable rate is firmly on course, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said. The Head of State has noted that increased access to power will boost economic growth and create jobs across the country. Speaking during the recent State House Energy Summit in Nairobi, Kenyatta vowed to improve service delivery within the energy sector. Also at the event, Ministry of Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter added that the government has invested in developing more electricity substations and transmission lines to boost power availability across the country.
Crack whip on cartels inhibiting fair pricing, World Bank tells CA Kenya’s Competition Authority should take additional steps to strengthen their ability to detect and deter cartels, World Bank officials have said. A new report from the World Bank Group and the African Competition Forum, dubbed ‘Breaking Down Barriers: Unlocking Africa’s Potential’, says that consumers in Kenya and her subSaharan counterparts are suffering due an inhibitive pricing ofgoods and services brought on by cartels. The data, released earlier this week, shows that cement in Africa costs 183 per cent more than it does in the rest of the world. The analysis also indicates that sub-Saharan Africa has the highest final telecoms cost for consumers in the world. It indicates that farmers in the region have been forced to contend with the inhibitive price of fertilizer.

people don’t laugh, then I’ll do a joke about love and if people still don’t laugh I’ll switch to something like politics. You just change subjects until you find the subject that the audience can relate to. Then you just stay with that. It’s only hard when you’re starting out because you don’t have a variety in terms of material. Do you find that there are topics that everybody responds to? Yes, I mean the truth is that everybody’s fallen in love, everybody has a family; there are some universal touchstones that we believe everybody finds funny. Then there’s the specific stuff like faith and politics that are not necessarily the same across the board. But I find that if you blend topics using anecdotes and stuff like that it almost always applies no matter the audience. Who have been the biggest influences on your work? Other comedians who I work with. The ones who I’ve grown with in the business, the ones I’ve sat down and written jokes with, those are the ones. When I was starting out in Canada there was a guy called Sugar Sammy who was probably the biggest person who told me ‘you can keep being a comedian’. How do you get inspiration for your material? Life, reading the newspaper plus just my own experiences. Everything I see becomes a joke. Even you might end up in a joke! Which kinds of audiences do you find are more responsive? The ones where there’s a big mix. I get excited when I see there’s some young people, old people, black people, some Indian people. When people are with their own kind, they get uncomfortable, so what I like about shows like the one happening on Friday, is that it’s going to bring all sorts of people together.
@christine_x254
o you think you are funny? Yes. I’m hilarious! But you’ve got to understand people always say that but take it lightly. Would you ask a boxer ‘can you fight?’ They know they can fight which is how I know I’ve been funny and is what made me get into comedy. It’s not that I started comedy then became funny. I was always funny growing up and that was what led me to think ‘that guy on television who’s funny, I’m funnier than him, why don’t I do that?’ Which is the worst show you’ve ever done? It was early on when I didn’t know what I was doing and I was doing shows for young people. I was talking about student stuff, I was talking about sex, basically I was a certain kind of comedian. I did this show at a golf club and I just didn’t know how to talk to them. I put them off completely, there was absolute silence in the room, it was horrible, but it was also growing pains. I went home and immediately started writing jokes for old people. What do you do if nobody laughs at a joke you took some time to set up? I just tell another joke that will make them laugh. Essentially what every comedian has to grasp is that every time you’re on stage, you have access to every joke you’ve ever written. So let’s say I do a joke about religion and

Koffi Olomide allegedly bribes his way out of jail
After getting an 18 month jail sentence which was lauded by fans and foes, Koffi Olomide has allegedly bribed his way out of jail. Sources in Kinshasa have noted with concern that details of the singer’s exact location are scanty. ‘No one knows which prison he will be serving his jail term at and we are worried that he may have been released,’ said a source who sought anonymity. It is alleged that the singer who is also a millionaire may have bribed his way out of jail and may have already gone into exile.

Ze Maria to tweak Gor for Stima clash WEEKEND EDITION, JULY 29-31, 2016
Gor Mahia head coach Jose Marcelo ‘Ze Maria’ has hinted he will field a different team when his side takes on National Super League side Nairobi Stima in the second round of the GOtv Shield at Nyayo National Stadium tomorrow. The Brazilian will hope to give playing time to players who have found it hard cracking the first team. “We have a big group and everyday in training, they work very hard. It will only be fair to give them this chance because they don’t normally get it in the league. It will also help us build on our depth as a team,” Ze Maria told Capital Sport. Among the players likely to be called in for the Cup match is midfielder Crispin Odula, who finally got his work permit on Wednesday. Defender Bernard Odhiambo might also be called in after recovering from a calf injury while winger Ronald Omino is a doubt. Among the players in line to be handed a rest include goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch, right-back Karim Nizigiyimana and captain Musa Mohammed who have played the most matches for Gor so far this season. Gor, the 10-time winners of the domestic cup last won the title in 2012 and will hope to do better this year with Ze Maria demanding his boys to give their best to beat Stima who are placed 10th on the National Super League standings. Defending champions Bandari will face

Nakumatt FC on Friday evening in a repeat of last year’s final and the Coastal based side believes their form in the league will not have an effect on them. The Dockers have won only one of their last five matches and currently stand 11th on the league.
“One of our objectives when the season started was defending our GOtv title and that is what is pushing us. We know it is a tough match because Nakumatt might come with a revenge mentality. We need to be focused and give our best,” Bandari skipper Wilson Obungu
noted. Meanwhile, arch rivals AFC Leopards, winners of the tournament in 2013 have vowed to give their all in the tournament as they aim to get back to continental football next season. They will be facing Kakamega
Homeboyz in a tough duel at the Mumias Sports Complex, preceded by a mouth watering clash between second tier sides Wazito FC and Bidco United. “This is not an easy match and for us, this is an opportunity to play in CAF matches next year. We should be able to give our best for this match and progress to the next round,” head coach Ivan Minnaert said. The availability of defender Jackson Saleh and striker Mungai Kiongera is uncertain with Saleh having landed awkwardly on his knee last weekend while Kiongera is only returning from an ankle injury. In Kisumu, Muhoroni Youth will host Ulinzi Stars, a side they eliminated from the KPL Top 8 last month. Ulinzi will be playing Muhoroni for the first time in a span of three days as they will face them on Wednesday next week in a league clash. Ulinzi picked up a morale boosting 3-2 win over Ushuru last weekend after losing their first three matches of the second-leg. Head coach Robert Matano will be hoping his side put in their best as he aims to give a shot for the Shield which has eluded them since the team was formed.

Schweinsteiger faces United exit, quits Germany duty
German World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to be the biggest casualty of Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Manchester United manager. Mourinho has already made three big summer signings and is closing in on Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba. Schweinsteiger, 31, looks like being one of nine players who may leave. The midfielder, who has announced his international retirement, trained on his own as United’s full squad trained together for the first time. Forwards Adnan Januzaj, Will Keane and James Wilson, midfielder Andreas Pereira and defenders Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Tim Fosu-Mensah, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair are also reportedly set to be made available, though some may only leave on loan. With all the other senior players who were absent from the recent tour of China present, Schweinsteiger’s absence from Thursday’s squad training session is being viewed as significant. United paid a reported £14.4m to sign him from Bayern Munich 12 months ago but the move did not work out as planned. Injury restricted Schweinsteiger to 31 appearances and he was involved in just seven of United’s final 34 games, including missing the FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace. He injured a knee on international
duty in March and only returned at Euro 2016, when he scored on his first appearance, as a substitute, against Ukraine. Of the other players who did not train with the United squad on Thursday, Januzaj has had the biggest fall from grace. The 21-year-old Belgian was one of the star performers in David Moyes’ single season in charge, when he earned himself a big increase in a five-year contract. But his progress was not maintained and he was loaned to Borussia Dortmund last season. He did not start a league game and the German side were happy to let United cut the deal short midway through the season when Louis van Gaal’s squad were badly affected by injury. He then featured for 17 minutes in three substitute appearances. Since his arrival, Mourinho has signed Villarreal defender Eric Bailly for about £30m, midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund for an undisclosed fee and former Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer. Early today, a French newspaper linked Mourinho with a shock move for West Ham playmaker Dmitri Payet claiming that Manchester United are preparing to bid for the Euro 2016 star.
Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. He is facing an imminent exit from Old Trafford after new boss Jose Mourinho listed him among players not in his plans. Schweinsteiger who captained Germany at Euro 2016 in Fance has also quit international duty.

Europa League: West Ham lose opener WEEKEND EDITION, JULY 29-31, 2016
West Ham endured a tricky start to their season as they lost 2-1 to NK Domzale in a Europa League qualifier in Slovenia. The Hammers are well placed to progress in next week’s second leg - the first competitive game at the Olympic Stadium - thanks to Mark Noble’s penalty. But for large periods, Slaven Bilic’s side were on the back foot. Matic Crnic put the hosts ahead from the spot and then grabbed the winner with a fine solo goal. Next week promises to be a sell-out encounter, with more than 50,000 inside the Hammers’ new home. Noble’s penalty has given West Ham an away goal that means a 1-0 win in the home leg will take them through. But in front of barely 3,000 in Ljubjana - the game was moved from the home of Domzale - the Premier League side faded badly after a bright first-half showing and looked well short of match sharpness. Crnic and Noble exchanged early penalties - with Domzale’s awarded for a Havard Nordtveit handball and West Ham’s for a foul on Winston Reid. The home side then went ahead at the start of the second half when Crnic

cut in from the left and curled home. West Ham goalkeeper Adrian had to be at his best to prevent Amedej Vetrih from adding a third with a spectacular late save. The Hammers were without last season’s standout player Dimitri Payet, and while new signing Sofiane Feghouli enjoyed an impressive start, he barely had a touch in the second half. And at the back Bilic looks to have
problems. Michail Antonio was at fault for Crnic’s second goal and looked fragile all night, while former Leeds full-back Sam Byram looked makeshift on the left. First-choice Aaron Cresswell is set to be out for four months with a knee injury and Bilic may need to enter the transfer market before the start of the season. “Our performance was not so good, and maybe I can say it was average
in the first half and it was 1-1. We were not satisfied with this result and in the second half we played badly,” West ham assistant manager Nikola Jurcevic said. “I am sure we will be better next week. It will be very difficult but I’m optimistic and I hope it will be a different game in the Olympic Stadium,” he added “We must be better. We must win this game in our stadium because we also
have big ambitions in Europe, but it will be very tough because Domzale showed they are a good team.” In other third-round qualifying games last night, Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin won their home leg over Danish club Brondby 1-0. Vedad Ibisevic scored the only goal in the 28th minute with his back to goal in a fine overhead kick. A Domenico Berardi penalty allowed Italy’s Sassuolo to take an away-goals advantage over Lucerne after a 1-1 draw. Marco Schneuwly opened the scoring for the Swiss side before Berardi equalised ahead of half-time. Markus Neumayr had a chance to win for Lucerne but his penalty was off the mark. Ligue 1 club Lille were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Qabala. Vitaliy Vernydub provided the Azerbaijani side with the lead on 13 minutes, though Lille were able to strike back through Ryan Mendes just after half-time. Saint-Etienne’s home leg against AEK Athens finished goalless while Jonny Hayes grabbed a deserved late equaliser for Aberdeen in a 1-1 draw with Maribor.
