so that investigations into the incident may be completed. This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions made an application in which he argued that investigators needed

more time to cover all angles in the probe. The suspects, Senior Sergeant Fredrick Leliman, Corporal Stephen Chebulet and Police Constable Silvia Wanjiku were arraigned

in court today. The DPP further states that the period will also be used to conduct a comprehensive postmortem on the three bodies so as to determine the cause of death.

“The Applicant is investigating a case of Murder of Willie Kimani Kinuthia, Josephat Mwenda Mwathi and Joseph Thinguri Muiruri contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the Penal Code,” the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Nicholas Mutuku stated. “It is believed that the Respondents have other associates who are still at large. Court orders suspects be detained for 14 days

From Page 1 The Respondents were arrested on 1st day of July 2016 and investigations are not yet complete and the team of investigators require additional fourteen (14) days to complete investigations,” he said. “It is in the interest of justice and within the discretion of this Honourable court to consider and grant the orders sought.” The DPP contends that the detention of the three will further prevent them from interfering with any witnesses in the case which has attracted a huge public outcry. The Law Society of Kenya, an interested party in the matter, has supported the application and the suspects’ lawyer Cliff Ombeta did not oppose it.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has rejected claims that police sanctioned extra judicial killings in the country and vowed to ensure those responsible are held to account. The bodies of lawyer Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri were found dumped at a river in Kilimambogo, with signs that they were tortured before their deaths. The bodies of the three were moved from the City Mortuary to Kenyatta National Hospital’s morgue which has X-ray facilities which will help pathologists determine the nature of injuries suffered by the three. The Pathologists are particularly

keen to establish if the three were shot at, strangled to death or any other means used to kill them due to the state of the bodies which were tied, while others had some of the body parts chopped off. The International Justice Mission where the lawyer worked has vowed to pursue all the necessary legal measures, to ensure justice prevails in a bid to end extra judicial killings in Kenya. Hundreds of demonstrators have gathered at Freedom Corner in Nairobi to protest the extra-judicial killing of the three. Lawyers have also indicated that they will boycott the courts for a whole week in solidarity with their colleague. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Owino defends police force from ‘blanket condemnation’ over killings Police spokesperson Charles Owino has defended the service following widespread condemnation in the wake of the killing of a rights lawyer, his client and a taxi driver by people believed to be officers. The trio lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and their taxi driver Joseph Muiruri were abducted by unknown men on June 23 as they left a courtroom in Mavoko. Their bodies were later found in river Sabuk in Machakos County. The killings have been condemned by lawyers and magistrates alike with politicians and international charity organisations joining the fray. But Mr Owino wants the public to refrain from blanket condemnation of the men in uniform and instead join hands with them to end ‘unlawful

killings’. Speaking during a morning interview at Citizen TV today, Owino asked the public to remain calm and allow the prosecution of those suspected to be behind the murders. “I have seen several cases where people only get concerned when it is certain people affected, let the court listen to the evidence and come up with a conclusion” Owino said. “Just because the matter involves a policeman, it necessarily doesn’t call for blanket condemnation. Therefore, when the approach is condemnation, we actually come out strongly against it,” he added. He was speaking even as human rights activists joined the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to push for the resignation of Inspector General Joseph Boinnet, as well as make a statement on what they term growing impunity

within the police force. The lawyers have indicated their intentions to boycott court sessions to press for the prosecution of police officers accused of abducting and killing the trio. Three police officers Senior Sergeant Fredrick Leliman, Corporal Stephen Chebulet and Constable Sylvia Wanjiku, all attached to Syokimau AP camp, are currently in custody over the killings. They are suspected of involvement in the abduction of the three and their eventual murder. But Owino said that while he regrets the murder of the three individuals, the alleged involvement of police officers should not be used as a yardstick to condemn the entire police force. @hillary_x254

Lawyers protest colleague’s murder in demos Lawyers, Civil Society Organisations and various Human Rights defenders including the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights today held demonstrations to protest the killing of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and their taxi driver. The protestors carrying placards and coffins started their possession from the Freedom Corner at Uhuru Park singing slogans against extra judicial killings before proceeding on to Kenyatta Avenue on their way to the Inspector General of Police office to present their petition. The crowd chanted anti -police chants throughout in what officials said was a move to protest against, “continued cases of extra judicial killings in the country.” They carried placards reading ‘stop extra judicial killings,’ and Katiba Institute Executive Director Prof Yash Pal Ghai said, “the protests were meant to express our anger against innocent killing of Kenyans.” He urged the Government to ensure justice is delivered to all the victims of torture in the country. “Police are there to protect Kenyans and not to kill them,” he asserted. “It is sad that we’re here today because of what has been happening is the country has almost become a norm.” He said that the day will be used to remember all victims of extra-judicial killings in the country. Iraq mourns victims after brazen bombing in Baghdad leaves at least 125 people dead A suicide truck bomb ripped through a busy shopping district in Baghdad over the weekend, killing more than 100 in what was the deadliest single attack in the war-weary country in years. The brazen Saturday night attack in the heart of the packed Karrada neighborhood killed at least 125 people, including 25 children and 20 women. Families had been gathering hours after they broke the fast for the holy Muslim month of Ramadan and prepared for Eid al-Fitr, the day that marks the end of the holiday this week. As people congregated, shopped and watched soccer matches, the bombladen truck plowed into a building housing a coffee shop, stores and a gym. Firefighters rescued wounded and trapped people in adjacent buildings. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. It was the latest in a string of assaults during Ramadan, a period of fasting and prayer for Muslims and also a time when jihadists launch operations against those they regard as their enemies. At least 147 people were wounded. The Iraqi government has declared three days of national mourning. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi visited the mainly Shia area on Sunday but his convoy was greeted by angry crowds. His office later announced the three days of mourning, adding that Mr Abadi understood the angry reaction of residents. The US said yesterday that the latest attack strengthened its resolve to support Iraqi forces in their fight against IS. “We remain united with the Iraqi people and government in our combined efforts to destroy Isil,” the White House statement said, using another term for the group. UN Iraq envoy Jan Kubis described the violence as a “cowardly and heinous act of unparalleled proportions”. ISIS promised an uptick in terror attacks during Ramadan. The Baghdad

assault came just days after massacres at a cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, and security targets in Yemen. There have also been recent suicide attacks in Jordan at a border crossing near Syria, and suicide attacks in a Christian area of northern Lebanon. Last month, a gunman shot up a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people before he was killed, and an attacker killed a police commander and his partner in France. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Bangladesh and Yemen and there are news reports that ISIS claimed responsibility for the Jordanian attack. Experts believe the group might have conducted the attacks in Turkey and Lebanon. Omar Mateen, the killer in Orlando, and the attacker in France both pledged allegiance to ISIS. A second bomb exploded Sunday at an outdoor market in the Shaab

neighborhood of southeastern Baghdad, killing one person and wounding five others, police said. Both Baghdad strikes are a sign of the Sunni-Shiite tension in the Muslim world. Sunni-dominated ISIS claimed it was targeting Shiite neighborhoods. Karrada and Shaab are predominately Shiite. “These acts of mass murder are yet another example of Daesh’s contempt for human life,” said State Department spokesman John Kirby, using another term for ISIS. “From Baghdad to Istanbul, Brussels, Dhaka, and Paris, Daesh terrorists murder the innocent to attract attention and recruits. They will not succeed.” Kirby was also making reference to the attacks last November in Paris that killed 130 people and the attacks in Brussels that left more than 30 dead. In Karrada, college student Sadeq al Zawini, 25, was watching as rescue workers pulled bodies from the rubble. “We’ve had it with the Iraqi government

and politicians. They can’t continue blaming Daesh and other terrorist groups. We need a solution,” he said. “I lost several friends myself, some are still missing,” he said, sobbing. The anger of residents manifested itself when Iraqi Prime Minister Haider alAbadi and other officials attempted to survey the bomb damage. Amateur videos posted on social media showed residents throwing objects at a convoy carrying al-Abadi in Karrada. The videos showed protesters yelling “thief!” and “get out!” In a statement, al-Abadi said he understands the reaction in “that moment of grief ” by the residents who threw objects at his convoy. He said he came to Karrada to console families and “share their sorrow in this painful tragedy that happened.” He said ISIS tried to hijack the joy that Iraqis felt over recent victories against ISIS in Falluja. Baghdad has witnessed a surge in the number of

car bomb attacks in recent weeks, with ISIS claiming responsibility for many of them. One of the worst incidents occurred in Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood May 11, when a car packed with explosives detonated, killing at least 64 people and wounding 87, according to security officials. A week later, three more explosions were set off. Sadr City was hit again -another 24 people were killed and 71 were wounded. The other two explosions were in the Shaab neighborhood adn killed at least 19 people and wounded another 44. This flurry of ISIS strikes during Ramadan comes as the United States says the group is losing ground in the warfare across Syria and Iraq. Iraqi forces announced last week they have seized the city of Falluja, 40 miles west of Baghdad, from ISIS. At the time, authorities assured Baghdad residents that the bombings would stop.

Bangladesh officials identify attackers, say they were known to authorities Bangladeshi officials have named five of the men who on Friday carried out the country’s worst terrorism attack and said they were known to police. Twenty hostages, most of them foreign, were killed when Islamist militants

stormed a cafe in the capital, Dhaka. Two police officers also died and 30 were injured. After a 12-hour siege, commandos rescued 13 people. IS had said it was behind the attack but the government has denied this.

Bangladesh’s home minister said on Sunday that the attackers belonged to a local militant group which has been banned for more than a decade. “They are members of the Jamaeytul Mujahdeen Bangladesh (JMB),”

Asaduzzaman Khan said. “They have no connections with the Islamic State.” Mr Khan said the men made no demands during the attack. He said three of the gunmen were under 22 and had been missing for six months.

Police chief Shahidul Hoque made some of the men’s first names public: Akash, Bikash, Don, Bandhon and Ripon. Nine Italians, seven Japanese, one US citizen and an Indian were among the dead.

KRA to miss tax collection target due to inefficiency: Cytonn report

High targets and an inability by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to effectively tax the informal sector have stopped the authority from meeting its targets despite improvements in tax efficiency, a new report from Cytonn Investment has revealed. According to the analysis, the KRA will still miss tax collection targets in the 2016/17 fiscal year should the government fail to address corruption and mismanagement of public funds as well as efficient allocation of budgetary resources for Kenya to realize double digit growth as outlined in the Vision 2030 protocols. “Historically, KRA has missed their tax collection targets and despite the improvements in tax efficiency, we think that KRA will still miss tax collection targets in the 2016/17 fiscal year, due to the high target they have, and the inability to effectively tax the informal sector in Kenya,” reads part of the report. “However, with the improvement in economic growth this shall translate to better earnings for companies and improve the employment status of the country and this would translate to better collections,” the report states. Less than 2 million Kenyans met the deadline for filing their returns on the KRA’s online ‘iTax’ platform by June 30, 2016, forcing the authority to extend its deadline for filing returns. However, the authority -- while commending taxpayers for turning

up in large numbers to meet their tax obligations -- had warned that those filing their returns late will have to pay penalties. “Consequently, KRA informs taxpayers that according to the Tax Procedure Act 2015, Section 83, late filing of returns attract penalties as follows: For employment returns, the highest of 25

Coffee farmers to benefit from Sh2.4 billion to offset debts Coffee farmers across the country are set to receive their dues as the government allocates Sh2.4 billion to the sector in the 2016/17 year in a bid to cover debts among coffee societies. This, according to Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed, is an addition to a Sh4 billion tranche that the government released in the recent fiscal year. “It is my expectation that farmers whose debts have been waived will take advantage of this gesture to increase coffee production and therefore incomes,” Mohammed said. Speaking during the 94th International Co-operative Day celebrations held at the weekend at Uhuru Park, the CS ascertained that the government is fully commitment to supporting the ailing coffee societies and give them a new lease. “The debt waiver is meant to help the coffee societies put their balance sheets in order,” said CS Mohammed. He added that the government has appointed a task force to look into problems affecting the coffee sub sector and recommend possible measures to address them. A task force report has already been submitted to the government and implementation mechanisms are being worked on by the relevant State Departments. @enock_x254

Government to release Sh 1.1 billion to revive KCC The government released Sh300 million in the last financial year and will be releasing an additional Sh800 million in the current fiscal year as it sets up measures to revive Kenya Cooperative Creameries Limited (KCC), Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed has said. According to the CS, the amount (totalling Sh1.1 billion) will be used to upgrade the new Eldoret-based dairy company as well as help the group in innovating their products, a move that include value addition of the firm’s produce. CS Mohammed said co-operatives in Kenya play a significant role not only in country’s economic growth, but also in improvement of its people’s way of life. ‘’Co-operatives, specifically the KCC, complement government’s efforts in developing country’s economy and the health of our people through production and supply of quality milk hence there needs to help them come back to their profitability,’’ said the CS while addressing the 94th International

Co-operative Day celebrations. According to the Ministry of Indusrty Trade and Cooperatives, New KCC has since its registration in 2003, been at the forefront of Kenya’s dynamic and ever growing dairy industry. “As a leading dairy processor and marketer, the Company’s range of products has continued to grow over the years, all of which have been

deliberately made to not only suit the unique tastes and preferences of our diverse and ever growing consumer base, but to also provide them a variety that is healthy, safe and affordable for all and without compromising on the quality of the product,” the Ministry said in a previous statement. @enock_x254

Government unveils ambitious plan to merge all financial sector regulators MONDAY, JULY 4, 2016

The government is working on a bill that will soon see all the country’s different financial institutions’ regulatory bodies merged to form one body that will regulate all the financial institutions in Kenya. Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary in his speech on July 2 at the 94thUshirika day (which coincides with the UN’s 22nd Co-operative movements celebrations) revealed that the Co-operative movement within the country and in the diaspora made a great contribution to the growth of the Kenyan economy. He noted that the movement ensured financial inclusion and mobilization and as such, it is important to support Kenyans in the co-operatives by safeguarding their resources by creating one regulator that will be called the ‘Financial Services Authority. The new outfit, according to the CS, will strengthen the supervisory capacity and contribute to the growth of Saccos. The CS noted that the government recognizes the importance of Kenyans living in the diaspora and their contribution to the growth of the Kenyan economy. “In order to support Kenyans who mobilize resources and participate in the country’s development, the government encourages our brothers and sisters in the diaspora to form co-operatives to pull together funds for development projects that serve their interests,” he said. So far, diaspora co-operatives have been registered in the United States, Europe, Middle East as well as Southern

Africa and more are in the process of being formed to draw lessons from those successful co-operatives, a move that was lauded by Mohammed. “It is important that adequate measures are taken to safeguard the gains made so far in the co-operative sector as we lay down plans for the growth of Co-operatives. In this regard, the government has initiated the merger of all financial sector regulators into one

entity to be called the Financial Services Authority with a view to strengthen the supervisory capacity of the sector. Saccos are expected to adhere to the regulations as set out by the new regulator that will be coming on board in due course,” the CS announced. He further acknowledged that regionally, Kenya is regarded as the region’s giant co-operative country and has continued to receive requests to

assist neighbouring nations to develop their own co-operative movements. As of December 2015, the Sacco sub sector had mobilized savings to the tune of just under 600 billion shillings and accumulated an asset base to a tune of Sh814 billion. Over the years, different financial institutions have been regulated by a number of regulators with the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA)

being the sole regulator of Saccos. SASRA is a statutory state corporation established under the Sacco Societies Act (Cap 490B) of the Laws of Kenya (the Act) which came into full operation upon the gazettement of the Sacco Societies (Deposit-taking Sacco Business) Regulations, 2010 (the Regulations 2010) on June 18, 2010. @kevin_x254

Red Cross to woo volunteers from private The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has reiterated the need for volunteerism among private sector stake holders, a move that promotes both social and economic development. The society held its national volunteer awards, a ceremony that acknowledges that its volunteers are the backbone of the organisation. The awards seek to make strides in strengthening volunteerism through initiatives that encourage and promote the practice as a meaningful undertaking countrywide. In 2013, KRCS held its first-ever National Volunteer Award celebrations in line with its Volunteer Recognition and Motivation Scheme meant to improve its Volunteer Management Systems. The awards are intended to recognize and reward volunteers, institutions, artists, universities, celebrities, youth, the corporate sector and organizations that have offered exemplary service to humanity and volunteerism in Kenya. The awards also recognize those who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to promoting volunteerism within the Red Cross

Equity inks deal to boost “Jua Kali” sector with micro-financing solutions International leading supplier of technology and services, Bosch Group and financial solutions provider Equity Bank have concluded a memorandum of understanding geared at providing the ‘Jua Kali’ sector with access to Bosch’s tools via a micro financing solution. The aim of the strategic alliance is to secure a micro-financing solution at a competitive interest rate, ensuring ease of access to the full range of Bosch’s tools with the long term objective of uplifting the sector. Speaking during the launch, Vonjy Rajakoba the Vice-President, Sales Power Tools at Bosch Group noted that the Jua Kali artisans recognised Bosch power tools for their quality, durability and back-up service. He added that the strategic alliance with Equity Bank will provide a gate-way for these entrepreneurs to grow their small businesses. This partnership will see the two institutions provide financial literacy skills as well as build the necessary capacity required for artisans in the Jua kali industry to find a competitive edge in their operations. The partnership will also allow local customers to access Bosch Group’s, high quality and unique tools for effective use in their businesses. It targets the stockiest, retailers, industries, schools, Construction industries, Technical Institutions and Universities. Equity Bank’s Director of Corporate and Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) Banking, Rohit Kumar Singh, noted that, “The Bank’s key focus on the SME business sector is to empower our business partners

to build and grow their businesses. The process offered by Equity Bank is not only transparent, but efficient and easy to access.” “As Equity Bank, one of our philosophies has always been to listen, understand and deliver solutions that meet and exceed the needs of customer.” Rohit added. According to World Bank Group economic 2016 report, Kenya’s economic performance remains solid, with the growth rate expected to improve from 5.6 per cent in 2015 to 5.9 per cent in 2016 and is projected to rise further to 6 per cent in 2017. The recent Kenya Economic Update (KEU) report shows that Kenya is creating more jobs now, but mainly in the informal sector. Notably, nine million youth will join the labor market in the next 10 years. Given the scarcity of formal sector jobs, the youth will continue to find jobs in the small household enterprises. The investment into this sector has found its roots as Bosch invested in providing training on the use of power tools. With increased interest in the power tool range, Bosch has provided a platform for the rental of Bosch power tools. Finding an ownership solution was the next step, in which the partnership with Equity Bank provided a tailor-made solution for the Jua Kali entrepreneur, not only in Kenya but throughout East Africa. Bosch established a presence in East Africa in 2014 with the official opening of the office in Kenya to ensure a full round support portfolio, training and aftersales service. @kevin_x254

Beer production lifts manufacturing s despite low growth of 3.6 pc in the fir Despite a considerable drop in international oil prices, Kenya’s manufacturing sector registered a slow growth of 3.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 which was slower than the 4.1 per cent of the corresponding quarter in 2015. The growth of the sector was partly supported by production of beer and stout, which increased significantly in the quarter under review. This is according to the latest report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). The analysis, dubbed: ‘Quarterly Gross Domestic Product and Balance of Payments Report First Quarter’, indicates that the economy is estimated to have maintained the growth momentum that started during the second quarter of 2015. All sectors of the economy posted positive growths resulting to an

expansion of 5.9 per cent in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the first quarter of 2016 compared to 5.0 per cent in a similar quarter of 2015. The most notable improvement was a rebound in activities of accommodation and food services which expanded by 12.1 per cent in the period under review compared to a contraction of 11.4 per cent during the same quarter in 2015. “However, performance of the sector was to some extent dampened by a decline in the manufacture of soft drinks and depressed growths in the manufacture of wheat and maize flour,” the Bureau said in a statement. “Further, manufacture of textiles and clothing declined by 22.0 and 8.8 per cent, respectively, in the quarter under review. Similarly,

assembly of motor vehicles declined by 35.3 per cent, compared with a 21.2 per cent growth experienced in the first quarter of 2015,” added the Statistics office. Agriculture, forestry and fishing; transport and storage; and mining and quarrying also recorded improved growths during the

Organic food distributors push to enforce labelling of GMO products Organic food distributors in the United States have continued their push to emforce the labelling of GeneticallyModified Organim (GMO) products sold by retailers. Two decades after engineered crops were first sold to Americans, efforts to require package labelling of genetically modified food have taken root in dozens of US states. Proponents argue for a right to know what’s n their food. On July 1, the US state of Vermont became the first to require labelling, after legal and congressional efforts to block the law, Bloomberg reports. More than 60 countries across the globe have labelling requirements, including Japan, China, Brazil and the entire European Union. The biggest developers of GMOs also sell most of the world’s commercial seeds. They are led by Monsanto, an American multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation, which has a 27 per cent market share in the industry. Scientists and farmers have been

manipulating crop genetics for thousands of years., crossing and selecting plants that exhibit desirable traits. In the early 1980s scientists discovered how to insert genes from other species into plants. The process led to the 1994 commercialisation of the first GMO known as the FlavrSavr tomato. In November, he first GMO meat was approve for sale in the US. In the US, as with many other parts of the world, the food industry is divided over the practice of labelling GMO products. The Grocery Manufacturers Association (a US-based trade association of the food industry) and its supporters have spent millions opposing labelling referendums in California and Washington while the organic food industry – which has quadrupled its sales since 1999 – is a prime supporter of labelling. In 2015, it emerged that mandatory labelling of GMO foods adopted by the National Biosafety Authority (an industry regulator) is likely to affect trade in grains within the East African Community

(EAC) as well as increase the cost of food in countries that suffer from food deficits. Trade experts as well scientists supporting Genetic Modification technology argue that the stringent measures taken by Kenya -- the EAC’s largest economy that also acts as a transit corridor to Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi -- will have a spill-over effect in the region that is already suffering from a severe food deficit. By the year 2012, Kenya was developing and testing GM crops in maize, cotton, cassava, sweet potatoes, pigeon peas and sorghum. Sorghum has been approved for contained greenhouse trials by the National Biosafety Authority (NBA). According to the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) that regulates the subsector, GM commodities would have to be transported, stored and processed separately to ensure less than one per cent GM content above which labelling has to be done. That means any product with more than one per cent GM content must adhere to stringent labelling codes. @Dennis_x254

One of London’s biggest law firms has said it is representing a group of unidentified clients threatening to take legal action against the British government if it tries to initiate the process of leaving the European Union without consulting parliament. The formal start to the exit, popularly known as ‘Brexit’ talks is likely to be the triggering of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, Bloomberg reports. The law firm, Mishcon de Reya said, in a statement that the process can only be started with parliament’s consent. The UK government’s position is that it is a decision for whoever is prime minister after former premier David Cameron tendered his resignation about a week ago. “The result of the referendum is not in doubt, but we need a process that follows U.K. law to enact it,” Kasra Nouroozi, a partner at the firm, said in an e-mailed

statement. “Everyone in Britain needs the government to apply the correct constitutional process and allow parliament to fulfill its democratic duty, which is to take into account the results of the referendum along with other factors and make the ultimate decision,” Nouroozi added. According to Bloomberg, the firm, which said it is acting on behalf of a currently anonymous group of concerned clients, has retained David Pannick, Tom Hickman, Rhodri Thompson and Anneli Howard to act in the matter. The law firm said it has been in touch with government lawyers since June 27 to “seek assurances that the government will uphold the UK constitution and protect the sovereignty of parliament in invoking Article 50.” Mishcon de Reya’s announcement come less than a week after Central Bank of

Kenya (CBK) Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge again assured Kenyans that the regulator is prepared to handle almost any of the aftershocks likely to be experienced following Britain’s move to exit the European Union. The Governor said in a statement in late June that he had attended the 2016 edition of an Annual General Meeting of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basle, Switzerland. The affair was an occasion for central bank governors from around the world to discuss global financial developments and their implications. The meeting was dominated by discussions about the implications of the UK Referendum to leave the European Union, and the high volatility that was experienced in the global markets last Friday. @Dennis_x254

A severe lack of sufficient water resources is deterring India, the world’s second most populous country, from becoming one of the globe’s leading manufacturers. India is home to nearly a sixth of the world’s population but gets only 4 per cent of the Earth’s fresh water. Already more than half of Asia’s third-biggest economy faces high water stress. The country’s ongoing water crisis signals a long-term threat to the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plans to turn India into the world’s next big manufacturing powerhouse. Competition for water is only set to grow in the next few decades, increasing costs and risks for companies looking to heed Modi’s call to manufacture their products in India, Bloomberg reports. By 2030, demand for water is expected to outstrip supply by about 50 per cent, according to the Water Resources Group, a public-privatecivil society. The dearth of water may deter companies from setting up production facilities in India, according to Anette Andersson, a Stockholm-based fund manager at SEB Investment Management AB who manages $366 million (Sh37 billion) in assets. “If nothing else, the risk premium has to be higher,” she said. Last year, the country’s federal government required all companies that use groundwater to obtain permission for the first time. In April, Environment Minister Prakesh Javadekar said India would aim to reduce industrial water usage by half in the next five years using the latest technology to reuse, recover and recycle water. “Because you get it for almost free you tend to misuse it,” said Damandeep Singh, director at CDP India, which says it holds the world’s largest database of corporate-related water information using disclosures from companies such as Coca-Cola Co., Ford Motor Co. and Nestle SA. “Appropriate pricing of water is possibly the best way to ensure it is used judiciously.” In India, water is cheap mainly for political reasons. Politicians prefer not to irk either voters or businesses who contribute to election campaigns. While individual factories have taken initiatives to save water, not much is happening on the ground, according to Shekhar Chandra, deputy director of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, which calls itself the nation’s largest business group. Iceland’s fairytale run ends with thrashing MONDAY, JULY 4, 2016

From Page 16 After defeating the Republic of Ireland and Iceland in the knockout stages, France will face a very different challenge against a German side with a lot more attacking capability. Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo rather sourly remarked that Iceland would “not go on to do anything” after their 1-1 draw at the start of the group stage. How wrong he was. Their exploits at Euro 2016 have not only done wonders for spreading the word about Iceland’s modest population (329,000 in case you had not heard) but captivated a nation and been one of the feel-good stories of a tournament that has desperately needed them. They not only defied the odds by qualifying from the group stage including a dramatic late winner against Austria - but also deservedly eliminated England in a match that they will surely never forget before running into a red-hot France. Under the calm and steady joint stewardship of part-time dentist Heimir Hallgrimsson and former Sweden boss Lars Lagerback they showed what can be achieved through determination and organisation. Even after they were on the wrong end of a 4-0 half-time scoreline against Les Blues, they showed the character and passion to ‘win’ the second half 2-1, cheered all the way by their magnificent fans, who gave the tournament the incredible hand clap. “Our defending didn’t work out as we wanted, but it’s not strange that we’re tired after so many games with the same squad. We got back into it in the second half, we showed a lot of character to do that, and we’re really happy that we won the second half,” striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson said. “We are disappointed but incredibly proud. It’s been an amazing experience. A lot of hard work has gone into this and the fans have been fantastic,” captain Aron Gunnarsson said. “The first half was terrible, we managed to play better after the break. We decided we could not leave like that. We will learn from this. We are just starting,” he added.

SPORT 15 MONDAY, JULY 4, 2016

Pep: I joined Man City to prove myself New Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says he moved to the Premier League to prove himself in England. Around 7,000 fans turned up at Etihad Stadium to hear the 45-year-old speak for the first time as City manager “That is why I am here. I proved myself in Barcelona and after I proved myself in Germany I wanted to prove myself in England,” he said adding “I cannot do that alone. I need the players, the staff. We need our fans. Without that, it is impossible.” The Spaniard joins City after three years at Bayern Munich where he won a hat-trick of Bundesliga titles but failed to reach a Champions League final. However, the former Spain international midfielder did win that tournament twice during his four years as Barcelona boss. He believes that a strong team spirit will be integral to City’s success. “I like the players who don’t just think for themselves but think about Manchester City,” said Guardiola. “We are all the people who are working here. The reason we are here is thinking ‘what can we do to make this club a better club’. I don’t want the guys to think about what the club can do for them. We are here to make City a better club in the next three, four, five years.”

Tuyisenge bags a brace as big guns Gor, Tusker fire warnings Talismanic striker Jacques Tuyisenge scored two quick first half goals in a span of four minutes as defending champions Gor Mahia beat Thika United 2-1 in their first match of the Kenyan Premier League second leg staged at Thika Municipal Stadium last evening. The win saw K’Ogalo climb to third on the log on 29 points, three adrift of leaders Tusker and one behind second placed Mathare United. Tusker were 1-0 winners over Posta Rangers at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos in an earlier kick off. New signing Hashim Sempala impressed brewers reclaimed the top spot courtesy of a Noah Wafula striker in the 18th minute. Mathare had on Saturday defeated Ulinzi Stars by a similar margin at Nyayo. In Thika, Gor took command of the first half that saw youngster Eric Ouma shine by providing two assists from the left flank. He could have broken the deadlock in the opening minutes if he did not miscue a scissor kick from a Karim Nizigiyimana cross, but that was a sign of good things to come. And it did not take long before K’Ogalo found the back of the net when George

Gor Mahia’s Jacques Tuyisenge celebrates after scoring against Thika United yesterday. He has nos eight goals in the league.

‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo rushed on the left to feed Ouma who curled in with his weaker right foot to find an unmarked Tuyisenge, who calmly headed home in the 13th minute. Four minutes later, Tuyisenge was on the mark again, punishing the hosts from the same spot as he once again nodded in from Ouma’s pinpoint cross to seal a brace. The brilliant combination between Francis Kahata and Ouma saw Gor pin down Thika for the better part of the first half before a lapse of concentration from keeper Jerim Onyango gifted the host a goal. Onyango, who was slotted in for suspended first choice keeper Boniface Oluoch, failed to stop Eugene Mukangula’s half volley that rolled in between the Gor captain’s legs to leave him scratching his head as Thika crawled one back in the 40th minute. No difference was made in the second half despite substitute Enock Agwanda coming close twice for the champions. In the dying minutes, Thika were unable to convert the few chances that came on their way with substitute Salim Mzee seeing his effort cleared by Harun Shakava while Tuyisenge too forced Martin Elung’at to make a wonderful save denying him a chance to complete a hat-trick.

GOR CLIMB TO THIRD WITH WIN OVER THIKA

P15

France thrash Iceland to set up Germany tie France scored five to brutally extinguish the Iceland fairytale and set up an intriguing Euro 2016 semi-final against world champions Germany in Marseille on Thursday. There was almost a stunned disbelief around the Stade de France at the break as the host nation walked off with a 4-0 advantage, two of them coming in the closing minutes of the half. Olivier Giroud’s low strike and Paul Pogba’s powerful header from a corner had settled early French nerves and put their side in control. Dimitri Payet scored his third goal of an increasingly memorable tournament for the West Ham playmaker with a precise low strike from 20 yards that skidded across the greasy surface before Antoine Griezmann deftly lifted the ball over Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson. After the restart Kolbeinn Sigthorsson stabbed home at the near post from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross as Iceland refused to give in before France restored their four-goal advantage when Giroud headed in a free-kick. Still, there was more to cheer for the excellent Iceland fans when Birkir Bjarnason headed a second for his side in the final stages of what has been a remarkable tournament debut for their team. Didier Deschamps’ side had only conceded twice in the tournament before meeting Iceland - both penalties - but they had not scored in the opening half of a match and only really shown in flashes that they can reproduce on the pitch the ability they appear to have on paper. That changed at a wet but atmospheric

Stade de France last night. Griezmann had not scored in 648 minutes of football for France at this ground but he ended that with his composed, delicate finish. In some ways the goal was everything that was best about France; a patient 14-pass move that ended with a moment of invention to open up the opposition. A raking ball forward was superbly dummied by Giroud, completely bamboozling the Iceland defence and giving Griezmann a clear run at goal. The goal took Griezmann to four in the tournament and he is now the highest scorer at Euro 2016, with Payet and Giroud among several players one behind. Inventive, alert and always involved, the Atletico Madrid star buzzed along and just behind the front line and was at the heart of so many good things for the French to deservedly win the man of the match accolades. “We’re very pleased, we scored five goals. Although we did concede a couple, we had a lot of fun and are pleased with our performance. We’re going to try to erase a few of these small defensive mistakes, because against Germany we’d pay a heavy price,” two-goal hero Giroud said. But even though France were very comfortable winners, it was far from a flawless performance. Iceland created several decent chances - Jon Dadi Bodvarsson shot over from a good position in the first half and Hugo Lloris made a brilliant save to stop a Sverrir Ingason header after the restart - in addition to their two goals.
