artels in various sectors of the economy, wrangling between the two levels of governments and lack of political goodwill have been identified as some of the major impediments derailing the achievement of Vision 2030. While addressing a forum earlier today, Deputy Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita (pictured left) said various unscrupulous entities within government are collaborating with locals to charge higher for compensation of land earmarked for flagship projects. He said there has been an extortionist mentality
especially when the government unveils a flagship project driving cost of land up way above the normal market price. County bosses have also been accused of derailing the projects especially those that they deem to be devolved functions further either by seeking legal redress or inciting the locals. “There is an extortionist mentality driven by cartels who collaborate with the locals to charge the government highly way much above the market price leading to delays in implementing the projects,” Waita said.

Lawyer, client and taxi driver were strangled A post-mortem report into the deaths of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josphat Mwenda and their taxi driver Joseph Muiruri were brutally beaten and strangled to death according to postmortem results. Chief Government pathologist Johansen Oduor said the three were hit with blunt objects and strangulated. The results revealed that Mwenda, who is believed to have been the main target, was brutally tortured before he was killed. The pathologist found that lawyer Willie Kimani was hit on the back of his head repeatedly with a heavy blunt object until his skull fractured. The postmortem also revealed that Muiruri was strangled. The report says he had injuries to his head, his neck and chest. His skull was fractured and blood was also found on his chest cavity. Wandayi’s House ban to remain as MPs slam court The High Court ruling allowing Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi to resume house sittings has drawn the wrath of MPs who have accused the Judiciary of usurping their powers. In the afternoon session on Tuesday, the legislators expressed their displeasure with High Court Judge Justice Odunga over his ruling that Wandayi be allowed to resume sittings until his case is determined. Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale kicked off the storm by claiming that the judiciary cannot be allowed to quash the decisions made in Parliament. Duale said the three arms of government are independent and the courts should not interfere with the standing orders of the House meant to bring sanity and discipline among Members of Parliament. “Hon.Wandayi cannot be brought back through a court order that is illegal and I urge the courts to respect the mandate of Parliament the same way we also don’t interfere with their operations,” Duale said. “Justice Odunga should tell us whether he wants to perform the work of the Judiciary or that of the legislature. The principals of separation of powers is very clear no arm of government is supposed to interfere with the other,” Duale said. He urged the Speaker to defend the powers of the National Assembly and give direction on the fate of Parliament Standing Orders in the light of the Court ruling allowing Wandayi back to the House. However, in a quick rejoinder Kisumu West MP Olago Aluoch said the Parliament Standing Orders are subordinate to the Constitution which the judge relied to make his ruling.
Olago also discouraged the House from discussing the court ruling since they don’t have a copy of the same. “In legal matters as this, you cannot discuss a ruling without a copy of the same and, therefore, this debate should be suspended until all members are furnished with the copy of the ruling, study and it before making contributions otherwise we will just be depending on the media reports,” Olago said. He urged MPs not to discuss Justice Odunga as an individual but should argue based on facts as presented by the judge in his ruling. “Let us not discuss Odunga as a person, we should ventilate on the matter at hand whether it’s legal or not,” Olago said. Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa said Parliament should bring a substantive motion to discuss individuals in the
Judiciary who have consistently interfered with the independence of the House. “Be firm Mr Speaker and defend the dignity of this house, but in the light of this High Court ruling we should bring a substantive motion to discuss those people in the judiciary who have continuously interfered with the independence of parliament,” Ichungwa said. Speaker Justin Muturi suspended the debate of the ruling until the house gets a copy of the same. Muturi said the matter is not about Wandayi and the Speaker but parliament as an intuition. “This matter is not about the speaker or Hon.Wandayi but it concerns the whole House and therefore until we get a copy of the ruling, we should not discuss it,” Muturi said. @sam_x254

Delays of implementing the initiatives on perceived opposition zones have been blamed on local politicians who include members of parliament and those of the county assemblies marshaling their supporters to reject the projects. “There are cases where MPs and MCAs especially from areas that do not favor the government of the day incite their followers against the projects. In return the contractors abandon them citing security reasons,” he added. Further, he castigated the media for misinforming the public about the projects giving those opposed to the government a platform to rebuke the state biased on corruption and lack of priorities. “What the media has been placing on their headlines is much of criticizing the government projects aimed at achieving 2030, giving the opposition a platform
to accuse the state of corruption,” added Waita. Vision 2030 was Sh40 billion economic plan unveiled in 2008 by retired President Mwai Kibaki aiming to create a globallycompetitive and prosperous economy with a high quality of life. With the vision, the government unveiled various projects to restore food security, reduce the cost of purchasing power, reduce mass unemployment and improve healthcare. On his part, Vision 2030 Delivery board chairman James Mwangi noted that despite the challenges the blueprint was facing, the projects were on a upward trajectory and set for completion. “We are facing challenges from almost all quotas but we are on the right track,” Dr Mwangi said. Mwangi cited the free and compulsory primary education, increased access to health care, increased access to road,
reduced cost of power and improving security structure. “Today as we speak many Kenyans can walk in our level 4 hospitals across the counties and access a maternity unit, diagnostic facilities, operating theaters, an consulting rooms,” he said. @wilson_x254

The revelations emerged on a day that FBI joined detectives investigating the murder of the trio. The three had disappeared after attending a court case at the Mavoko Law Courts in Machakos County shortly before 1pm, only for their bodies to be recovered a week later from a river OlDonyo Sabuk stuffed in gunny bags. Investigators said they were abducted and taken to the Mlolongo AP camp where they were detained until midnight. The three were however not booked in the Occurrence Book, a major violation of the Police Standing Orders. The detectives have already mapped out an open field in Syokimau which they believe could have been the murder scene. “The killing of the three was committed somewhere near Syokimau. Probably behind Mastermind Company,” sources handling the matter confided to The Standard. Detectives now believe they have made crucial progress in the probe. They have now concentrated their search on two or three people believed to have collaborated with four detained police officers in executing the killings. “The progress is very good because the site (of the killings) is now known. What is remaining is the rest of the suspects involved and weapons used,” a senior officer briefed on the investigations told Capital FM. Detectives spent a better part of yesterday evening
combing the field as they pieced together evidence to be used in court against the four police officers detained over the killings that have shocked Kenyans. Capital FM News has learnt that the suspects were dragged out of the Mlolongo Administration Police camp at night with their heads covered in polythene bags, before they were tortured, bludgeoned to death and their bodies packed in sacks. The bodies were then taken to Ol Donyo Sabuk River in Kilimambogo where they were dumped, and the vehicle belonging to the taxi driver abandoned on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway. The investigators, our source said, are relying on CCTV footage that captured the movement of the vehicle from Mlolongo to where it was dumped – as well as information from mobile phones of the slain victims. “The officers are also analyzing phone records of the officers who are in custody to see if matches other crucial elements of the investigation so far,” another officer said. Sergeant Fredrick Leliman, Sergeant Leonard Mwangi, Corporal Stephen Chebulet and Constable Silvia Wanjiku are all in custody over the murder. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Ndegwa Muhoro was summoned to court yesterday for an update on the ongoing investigations during which he revealed FBI’s involvement. @peter_x254

Zimbabwe civil servants strike over unpaid May salaries Government workers in Zimbabwe have gone on strike over unpaid salaries because of a chronic cash shortage. Teachers, doctors and nurses were among who stopped work because they had not been paid in more than a month. It comes a day ahead of a suggested national shutdown called by activists complaining about the economy and alleged government corruption. Police used teargas and water cannons to break up protests in some areas of the capital, Harare, on Monday. The unrest had begun when minibus drivers erected barricades in a protest against harassment and roadblocks by police demanding bribes. Teachers, doctors and nurses have not been paid for a month, but the government has said they will get their wages by the middle of July, Reuters reported. The scene in the country’s capital, Harare, remained quiet with civil servants on strike, the BBC reports. “We have heeded the call” by our governing council, Zimbabwe Teachers’ Union president Richard Gundani said. “Teachers and the rest of the civil servants are declaring their incapacity to go to work. Government departments were operating without some of their staff who stayed at home.” Our correspondent says unlike other government workers, the security forces were paid on time in June. Those who were not paid were handed a $100 (about Sh10,000) advance to help with transport and other costs. Zimbabwe has become increasingly volatile in recent weeks as the government struggles to cope with a severe cash shortage and the effects of a drought.
Tanzania bans shisha smoking Tanzania has banned the smoking of shishas or water pipes over concerns of links with drug or alcohol abuse. The government said businesses in the country’s biggest city, Dar es Salaam, were expected to stop shisha sales within seven days. Shisha smoking has become increasingly popular with young people in Tanzania. But there has been growing concern that smoking the fruit-scented tobacco through a bowl and tube could be used to cover up alcohol or drug abuse. Correspondents in Dar es Salaam say there have been cases of some users replacing the water with alcohol or marijuana infused water. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa is reported to have said that shisha smoking was killing future generations.
FBI clears Clinton on email use as Trump, Republicans cry foul FBI Director James Comey said Tuesday that he would not recommend charges against Hillary Clinton over her use of private email servers while secretary of state, removing a huge shadow hovering over her presidential campaign. But Comey administered an extraordinary tongue-lashing to Clinton and her aides, rebuking them for being “extremely careless” in the handling of classified information and saying the presumptive Democratic nominee should have known an unclassified email system was no place to conduct sensitive government business. The FBI director pointed out that the probe was tasked with examining whether Clinton or her aides had mishandled classified information either intentionally or in a grossly negligent way. “Our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case,” Comey announced after a lengthy recap of the investigation apparently designed to protect the integrity of his agency in a highly charged political atmosphere. Comey’s decision not to recommend charges likely removes the threat of prosecution in the middle of Clinton’s campaign for the presidency, but the political fallout will continue. His explicit criticism of Clinton’s conduct offered her enemies a trove of fresh ammunition for their assault on her character, honesty and trustworthiness — one of her biggest vulnerabilities. In a stunning moment of Washington theater, Comey stepped up to the microphone to deliver the FBI’s findings just over two hours before Clinton climbed aboard Air Force One to travel to her first campaign event with President Barack Obama. Adding to the tension, he made clear the White House and the Justice Department “do not know what I am about to say.” White House Press Secretary Josh

Earnest said the White House doesn’t have an official response to the FBI’s announcement, saying the case is still active and in the hands of the Department of Justice. Earnest added: “I am confident that the President and Secretary Clinton are not discussing the FBI investigation that is completed” on Air Force One. Neither Obama nor Clinton addressed Comey’s remarks during their campaign event in Charlotte, North Carolina, though Obama praised Clinton’s work at the State Department. Comey delivered a stern lecture to Clinton and State Department colleagues at her side during her tenure as top U.S. diplomat between 2009 and 2013. “Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information,” he said, “there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.” In the first reaction from the Clinton camp to Comey’s statement, spokesman Brian Fallon said that the campaign was “pleased that the career officials handling this case have determined that no further action by the Department is appropriate. “As the secretary has long said, it was
a mistake to use her personal email and she would not do it again. We are glad that this matter is now resolved.” Later, aides said they were relieved by the announcement, even though they know it’s far from being in their rearview mirror. The findings of the FBI probe immediately detonated on the campaign trail with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump (pictured below) crying foul. “The system is rigged. ... Very very unfair! As usual, bad judgment,” Trump tweeted. He later issued a statement in which he claimed U.S. “adversaries almost certainly have a blackmail file on Hillary Clinton,” which he said “disqualifies” her from the presidency. At a Tuesday evening rally in North Carolina, Trump again pointed to the FBI’s decision as fresh evidence of a “rigged system.” “Whats going on is very big ... for Bill Clinton to go to the plane, then to have what happened ... Everybody thought based on what was being said she was guilty. She was guilty. And it turned out that, ‘We’re not going to press charges.’ It’s really amazing,” Trump said as his crowd of supporters broke out in a chorus of boos. And House Speaker Paul Ryan said Comey’s announcement “defies
explanation.” “No one should be above the law,” Ryan said in a statement. “But based upon the director’s own statement, it appears damage is being done to the rule of law. Declining to prosecute Secretary Clinton for recklessly mishandling and transmitting national security information will set a terrible precedent.” Ryan later recommended on Fox News’ Kelly File that the Director of National Intelligence “should block her access to classified information” as a form of punishment. And he said House Republicans would ask Comey to answer them in hearings on Capitol Hill. “There are a lot of unanswered questions here,” Ryan said, though he did would not say that Comey folded to political pressure when asked. “He shredded the case that she had been making all year long.” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus blasted the FBI’s decision. “I certainly don’t understand how you describe a textbook definition of gross negligence, and you have case after case after case of soldiers and other military personnel being kicked out of the military ... for things that are far less egregious than what Hillary Clinton did,” Priebus told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.”

Little Cab to rival Uber as ride service branches into local taxi market Uber, an international taxi hailing app will soon face stiff competition following the launch of rival Little Cab by Safaricom, the country’s largest telecommunication operator in terms of market share. Unlike Uber, Little Cab cars will offer free Wi-Fi to passengers as it aims to provide cheaper fares compared to those of competitors, as well as offer drivers a higher share of revenue, officials of both firms said in a statement. The launch comes at the time when controversy around Uber has led to violence and vandalism in Kenya, where six men allegedly attacked an Uber driver in February this year.
Speaking during the official unveiling of the app, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said that the product is purely local hence well positioned for competition across the region. To enhance insecurity issues, Collymore said that clients would be able to pay for the services using mobile transfer platforms, Visa and Master Card branded bank cards as well as cash where appropriate. “We will soon improve the app to enable clients pay the fare using their subscriber loyalty reward, Bonga Points,’’ said Collymore. “With the introduction of Little Cab in the taxi business, drivers will now have a bigger share of
the revenue than similar taxi services because of competition,” he added. Uber is active in 10 cities in subSaharan Africa. The international company has welcomed the new apps in Kenya as it is leading to greater choice, which in turn “creates competition and a better experience for the consumers.’’ “At the end of the day competition is good,” said Nate Anderson, the General Manager of Uber Kenya. Little Cab will be available on Android and Windows phones and will be made available on iOS platforms soon, the company officials said. @enock_x254

Political protests cause private sector growth to stagnate Kenya’s job and retail sub-sectors have suffered a heavy blow due in part to political protests, new data has revealed. The country’s private sector activity expanded at the slowest pace in June since at least January 2014, with output nearly standing still amid a slowdown in hiring and purchasing, a survey showed on Tuesday. The analysis, dubbed the’ Markit CFC Stanbic Kenya Purchasing Managers’ Index’ (PMI) dropped to 51.5 last month from 54 per cent in May, close to the 50 per cent mark that divides growth from contraction. Economists have said this may have been driven largely by public investment rather than private enterprise. Kenyans continue to view car ownership as sign of prestige as motor market shifts WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2016
Kenyans will continue to view car ownership as sign of prestige following an ongoing shift in the global motor market. This is according to a new analysis by research group Frost & Sullivan. “The concept of car ownership is changing globally with a significant shift to car-pooling and ride sharing concepts in congested European cities,”
says the new report, which tags Kenya as a growing automobile market with great potential. The research however, indicates that this trend is not expected to be adopted in Sub-Saharan Africa, as the ownership of a vehicle in these cities is still seen as an aspirational value. “The automotive market is relatively new when compared to that of more mature
European and American markets,” Frost & Sullivan said in its analysis. The data also notes that the global automotive business is in its most disruptive era since the advent of the industry over a century ago, creating an abundance of opportunities for new and established companies in the global automotive market. Frost & Sullivan anticipates the market to grow by 2 per
cent, reaching 91 million new units sold in 2016. The data comes barely a year after CMC Motors Group Limited, a Division of AlFuttaim Automotive Group launched three new Mazda Passenger models to add to the popular Mazda BT-50 single cab and double cab pick-up range already available in Kenya today. Additionally launched last August was
the new Mazda Kenya showroom along Lusaka road, Industrial Area. Mazda headquartered in Hiroshima Japan, delivered over 1,400,000 million vehicles in 2014. Mazda has since announced plans todeepen its investment across Sub Saharan Africa with the launch of new models in 2016. @Dennis_x254

Zimbabwe workers face hard times over cash flow shortage WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2016
Zimbabwe this morning deployed police in townships around the capital of Harare amid calls for a strike by state workers over an economic collapse that has led to a shortage of cash, import controls and the failure of the government to pay salaries on time. While the government warned workers not to join the stay-away, some schools have closed and there was little traffic on main roads into the city. The labour action was called following the Finance Ministry’s announcement that it was delaying pay for state workers, including the military, and riots on Monday sparked by protests by taxi drivers over alleged police harassment, Bloomberg reports. “If they take part in an unsanctioned process there will be consequences, and they must disregard this call for a stayaway,” Supa Mandiwanzira, the action public service minister, said on Wednesday by phone. President Robert Mugabe’s administration has faced a worsening cash shortage in recent months. Since abandoning its own currency in 2009 to end hyperinflation, Zimbabwe has used mainly U.S. dollars, as well as South African rand, euros, and British pounds. The government spends about 83 per cent of its revenue on wages for state workers, according to Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa. On Monday, Harare was hit by riots as taxi operators protested against what they said was police harassment. Violent clashes also erupted last weekend at Zimbabwe’s main border post with South Africa, forcing its closure, when

The riots started when minibus taxi operators staged demonstrations in suburbs around the capital to complain that police routinely demand money when they stop vehicles to check whether they are roadworthy. Police responded by unleashing dogs and firing tear gas. Police have arrested 95 people in Harare and they will appear in court
on Wednesday, Spokeswoman Charity Charamba told reporters in the capital on Tuesday. There have been calls for a general stayaway on Wednesday on social media. “We are seeing people being pushed into a corner and they have no option but to confront the regime,” Showers Mawowa, Research Manager at the Cape Town-based civil-rights group Southern African Liaison Office, said
by phone Tuesday. Former Vice President Joice Mujuru, who was expelled from the ruling party, has urged Mugabe to call new elections and the police to protect protesters. “His government has totally failed the people and this is why we are now seeing the demonstrations in the country,” Mujuru told reporters Tuesday at her home in Harare. @Dennis_x254
World Cup final tickets to cost Sh111,000
World Cup ticket prices have broken the $1,000 (Sh101,000) barrier for the first time in history, FIFA, the governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer said on Tuesday. FIFA said the top price for the 2018 final in Moscow will be $1,100 (Sh111, 000), up from $990 for the 2014 final in Rio de Janeiro. Other tickets for the final will cost $710 (Sh72, 000) and $455 (Sh46,000), with additional category 4 tickets — which are sold exclusively to Russian residents — costing 7,040 rubles (currently Sh11,000). For international fans, tickets for first-round games range from $105-210 (Sh10,600-Sh21,300), except for the opener, which costs up to $550 (Sh55,700), Bloomberg reports. Russian residents get sharply discounted rates, with their cheapest first-round tickets selling for 1,280 rubles (Sh2,000), an increase on equivalent prices for 2014 but roughly in line with prices for South African fans in 2010. “We wanted to make sure that we priced tickets fairly to make the events accessible to as many people as possible,” FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura said in a statement. World Cup ticket sales won’t start until after the Confederations Cup in Russia next summer. @Dennis_x254
Polish workers in the UK consider US now holds more recoverable returning home following ‘Brexit disaster’ oil reserves than Saudi Arabia
As many as 800,000 Polish workers in the U.K. have been forced to consider the option of returning to their native country following Britain’s recent move to leave the European Union (EU). Britain held a referendum in June on whether to leave the European Union, a process often referred to as “Brexit.” Economists have speculated that the move could have adverse effects on the region’s economy. By slowing the economy and limiting access to EU workers, Brexit could undermine the U.K.’s job-creation machine, which has drawn 3.2 million citizens from other EU countries -- more than 800,000 of them from Poland, Bloomberg reports. The influx has surged since Poland and seven other Eastern European countries joined the bloc in 2004, giving their citizens unrestricted rights to work in the U.K. Anxiety about immigration fuelled the Brexit vote, and the country’s Conservative Party’s contenders to replace Prime Minister
David Cameron have vowed to reduce net migration from a near record 330,000 in 2015. U.K. employers who rely on immigrant workers are rushing to reassure them they’re wanted and needed, urging them to sit tight while the U.K. government negotiates a new relationship with the EU. Five of the biggest business groups in the U.K., including the Confederation of British Industry and the British Chambers of Commerce, wrote an open letter Tuesday calling on the government to reaffirm the long-term rights of EU nationals working in Britain. Eighty members of Parliament followed with a similar plea. “Their skills are crucial to the success of our businesses, both now and into the future,” they wrote. With the unemployment rate at an 11-year low of 5 per cent, U.K. employers say they need access to the EU labor pool. According to a Bloomberg analysis, unless they work in occupations facing labour shortages, non-EU citizens can get work visas only if they have a job
that requires a university degree and pays at least 20,800 pounds (Sh2.7 million) a year, which is due to rise to 30,000 pounds (Sh3.9 million) next year. Even with these hurdles, Home Secretary Theresa May -- one of the leading candidates for prime minister-- has struggled to reduce the number of non-EU migrants. Net migration from outside the EU in 2015 was 188,000, higher than from inside the bloc. Agriculture, restaurants, hotels and the fishing industry would be hardest hit if skill-based selection criteria were applied to EU workers, Vargas-Silva said. Some politicians have warned of a last-minute rush of migrants hoping to get into the U.K. before the rules change. Before the referendum, employers were offering more people permanent jobs amid an increasingly tight labour market. Since the vote, employers have become more wary about the future and they’ve been shifting to temporary contracts. @Dennis_x254
The United States holds more recoverable oil reserves than either Saudi Arabia or Russia, according to new data from Oslo-based consultant Rystad Energy. For the U.S. more than 50 per cent of the remaining oil reserves is in unconventional shale oil. Texas holds more than 60 billion barrels of shale oil according to the new data. New data from Rystad distinguishes between reserves in existing fields, in new projects and potential reserves in recent discoveries and in yet undiscovered fields. An established standard approach is applied to all fields in all countries, said Rystad, which means reserves can be compared applesto-apples across the world. Other public sources are based on official reporting from national authorities, which are in turn based on diverse and opaque standards, Rystad said. Rystad estimates total global oil reserves at 2,092 billion barrels, or 70 times the current production rate of about 30 billion barrels of crude oil per year. Unconventional oil recovery accounts for 30 percent of the global recoverable
oil reserves, and offshore 33 percent. The seven major oil companies -- BP, Exxon, Chevron, ENI, Total, Shell and ConocoPhillips -- hold less than 10 percent of the total, Rystad said. The estimates come barely two months after it was discovered that Kenya, East Africa’s leading economy, may have more oil than previously believed. Following a new discovery, Canadian energy group Africa Oil added 150 million more barrels of oil to its reserves in the Lokichar Basin in the country’s north. This is 24 per cent more than earlier estimates. Africa Oil’s reserves now stand at a total of 766 million barrels. The updated figure follows the March discovery of “an active petroleum system with significant oil generation” in Kerio Valley, also in northern Kenya, by British energy group Tullow Oil. Tullow and Africa Oil have been exploring the basin, believed to have as much as 1 billion barrels of oil that could make Kenya an oil exporter in the future. @Dennis_x254

Wales set for historic Euro semi-final Wales are prepared for the biggest game in their history when they play Portugal in Lyon tonight for a place in the final of Euro 2016. Chris Coleman’s side have already enjoyed a memorable run to reach their first semi-final at their only major tournament since 1958. “We’ll be the underdogs, but we believe in each other,” manager Coleman said. Jonathan Ford, chairman of the Football Association of Wales, told BBC Sport: “It is history in the making, it’s a dream come true. “These players will run through brick walls for us. This has been a fantastic demonstration of team spirit, team morale, teamwork. Sport and culture are the two things that really help us define Wales and the Welsh people,” he added. More than half of the three million population of Wales are expected to watch their country take on regular Euro semi-finalists Portugal, eclipsing the national television record for a sporting event which was only set on Friday for their 3-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium. The Prince of Wales also sent the team a “huge good luck” message, saying: “I’m sure they have got a very good chance of beating Portugal. Everyone here will be keeping their fingers crossed,” Prince Charles said. Ranked a record low of 117 in the world in August 2011, Wales could end the tournament in the top six in world football, having already won four of their five games at Euro 2016. They beat Slovakia and Russia in the group stages, with their only defeat a last-minute 2-1 loss to England. They knocked out Northern Ireland 1-0 in the last 16 before overcoming Belgium, the highest ranked side at the tournament, to set up the meeting with Portugal.

However, they will be without influential midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who is suspended for Wednesday’s game. Arsenal’s Ramsey has been hugely influential for Wales, scoring one goal and providing four assists, and was man-of-the-match against the Belgians. Defender Ben Davies is also banned. “Some of Aaron Ramsey’s performances have been off the chart,” Coleman said. “Davies’ performances have been outstanding. Both players would be a loss to any team. “But the attitude of the players who haven’t played has been fantastic and that has kept the dressing room really strong and kept the vibe really positive,” said the head coach. Led by one of football’s all-time greatest
players Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal are preparing for their seventh major semi-final and their fourth in the last five Euros. They drew all three group games before beating Croatia 1-0 after extra time in the last 16 and then edging Poland 5-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals. And tonight, all eyes will be on two players; Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid team-mates are seen as the talismen for their respective sides. Bale has three goals at Euro 2016 while Ronaldo has two. Bale became the world’s most expensive footballer when he joined Real from Tottenham for £85m in 2013, surpassing the £80m the Spanish club paid Manchester United for Ronaldo in
2009. Their relationship has been the subject of intense media scrutiny, with both insisting there is no rift. “Of course we get on very well at Madrid, we enjoy playing with each other,” Bale, 26, said. “He’s a fantastic player, everybody knows what he can do. But we have always spoken about what we do, what we do ourselves as a team. We don’t worry about the opposition,” he added ahead of tonight’s clash at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. The statistics don’t look much in favour of Portugal who have played the most games (33) in the history of the European Championship without ever winning the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal short of France legend Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in the competition but he has failed to score with any of his 41 direct free-kicks at seven World Cups and Euros from 2004 to 2016. Bales has meanwhile scored with two of the five direct free-kicks he has attempted with Wales at Euro 2016. He also has had more shots on target than any other player at Euro 2016 (14) and three of them have ended in the back of the net. It is also comforting for the Wales supporters to know that their team is the second highest scoring side with 10 goals at Euro 2016, only one behind hosts France who beat Iceland 5-2 in the quarters on Sunday. Wales are expected to be backed by more than 20,000 fans in Lyon, with fans travelling by road, sea and air to be a part of their nation’s moment of history. There are concerns that some fans
could be hit by French air traffic control strikes, days after hundreds of Wales supporters were affected by Eurotunnel delays before their quarter-final. The winner of this semifinal will face either hosts France or world champions Germany in the Euro 2016 final at the Stade de France on Sunday. It is a bit of a mystery game for both sides in one sense, having never previously met in a competitive fixture. Their most recent encounter was in June 2000, which Portugal won 3-0. You would have to go several decades further back for their previous two matches, with Portugal winning 3-2 in a friendly in 1949, while Wales won in Cardiff two years later. Portugal are considered the home team for the game, meaning Wales will have to wear their charcoal and green away kit. That will be a bit of a blow for Wales, who have won every game they have played at Euro 2016 in their traditional red colours. Wales wore their away kit for their second Group B game against England, which they lost 2-1. Wales’ players have been asked not to bring their children on to the pitch after Wednesday’s game because it is “not a safe place”. Fans have been delighted by images of players including Bale, Hal RobsonKanu and Ashley Williams celebrating with their children in their victorious run to the last four. However European football’s governing body Uefa said: “It is a European Championship, not a family party.” Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson will officiate the match.

France seeks World Cup revenge against Germany
France and Germany take on each other in the second semi-final of the Euro 2016 with the hosts seeking to revenge their world cup elimination in Brazil two years ago at the quarterfinal stage in the hands of the opponents. Germany beat France 1-0, courtesy of a Mats Hummel’s 13th minute header at the Estadio do Maracana in Rio De Janeiro on July 4, 2014. Since then, times have changed and France striker Olivier Giroud says his teammates will be inspired by the need to exact revenge on the Germans for the loss in Brazil. We want revenge for our quarter-final loss in the World Cup,” said the Arsenal striker. “We beat them in a friendly in November, but it’ll be a different game,” he added. Giroud started that match on the bench coming on in the 84th minute to replace wideman Valbuena who had been fielded in a three-pronged attack alongside Benzema and Griezmann. But he is expected to start tomorrow’s match at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille with playmaker Dmitri Payet coming in on the other side of Griezmann. France will also welcome back France coach Didier Deschamps
defender Adil Rami and midfielder Ng’olo Kante to the starting line-up after the duo sat out the 5-2 quarterfinal win over Iceland on Sunday with suspensions. Home advantage is another factor that will boost the morale of the Frenchmen as they take on tournament favourites. “We’re lucky to be playing a Euro semi-final in front of a home crowd and I’m very proud of what this team is achieving,” Giroud added. Germany meanwhile will be without influential fullback Philip Lahm who retired after his world cup winning heroics in Brazil but the world champions have so far found replacements. Hummels is suspended for the game but Mustafi is expected to partner Jerome Boateng in the heart of defence while captain Bastian Schweinsteiger could get his first start at the championship by replacing injured Sami Khedira in midfield. Germany manager Joachim Low will also have to replace striker Mario Gomez who has since been ruled out for the rest of the tournament in France with either Mario Gotze or Julian Draxler ready to step up. With not much effect to the qualities available for both coaches, the match will narrow down to a tactical battle between the two sides. France boss Didier Deschamps has switched between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1-cum-4-4-2 throughout the competition, although there’s little question the former is his preferred shape. N’Golo
Kante has continued his fine form into Euro 2016, and Deschamps, the former water carrier himself, will be keen to include a holding midfielder against a side with multiple playmaking threats. Germany tactician Joachim Low, meanwhile, switched to a three-man defence for the quarterfinal with Italy, matching Antonio Conte’s system with the use of wing-backs. While that was clearly a tactic chosen specifically to counter a particularly feared opponent, it’s not unthinkable that Low might use that system against France, too. @peter_x254

Pepe doubt for Portugal in crunch semis with Wales P ortugal could be without the services of tough-tackling center-back Pepe when they take on Wales tonight in the first semifinal of the Euro 2016 Championship in France. The Real Madrid star picked up a thigh injury in training yesterday, throwing coach Fernando Santos into an anxious wait on his fitness and eventual availability. Should he fail to recover in time, then Portugal will have to face Wales without two of their key players following the suspension of deep-lying midfielder William Carvalho. Their opponents, Wales also have similar worries with versatile midfielder Aaron Ramsey also suspended as is defender Ben Davies. But unlike in the case of manager Chris Coleman, his Portugeuse opposite number Santos has almost like for like replacements for his missing stars. Ricardo Carvalho is likely to step up and fill the void in the backline should Pepe fail to recover while Danilo will come in for William Carvalho in front of the back four. Raphaël Guerreiro has also shaken off a knock and is set to return on the left and Santos is feeling buoyant. “This is a gigantic step towards our goal against incredibly strong opponents. It will be complicated but we have the talent to win it,” he told reporters. “Wales have had an incredible campaign. They came through a tough group and beat Belgium, the No1-ranked team [in Europe] 3-1! I greatly admire Chris Coleman –
we spoke once or twice when he was in Greece. I understand why he says we’re favourites. I bet he doesn’t tell his players that, though,” he added about his opponents. Much focus has been put on Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo with the Real Madrid teammates clashing for the first time in an international competitive fixture. But the duo will have to do more than they have done in previous games to lift their teams to the final on Sunday. And it will be down to who does that best, considering they have to jungle their usual burden of leadership and stardom. They also have to do it while surrounded with players who are nowhere near as gifted as the teammates they’re used to at club level. While Bale has been given a largely free-role in this tournament, Ronaldo has had a task different from what he is normally used to. He’s effectively been asked to be the offensive terminus and provide the goals, with the rest of the team at his service. He’s done it intermittently, missing chances you’d expect a man who has scored more than 350 goals for club and country in the past six seasons to bury in the back of the net. When the goals don’t go in, it’s tougher for Ronaldo, in this role, to make himself useful. He cannot start rampaging around the midfield, or run himself into the ground chasing fullbacks, leaving the frontline unmanned. All he can do is sit, find space in the box and trust that his teammates will deliver chances.
