Woman found dead at Nairobi hotel pool
P
olice are investigating an incident in which a 27 yearold woman was found dead in a swimming pool at the Hilton hotel early today. The woman is said to have left her American boyfriend who is a pilot in the room when she went swimming at 5.00 am, according to Nairobi Police Boss Japheth Koome. “The incident took place when the woman who is Kenyan and her boyfriend were at the Hilton hotel where they had checked in at dawn. They had been partying during the night and had frequented two clubs in Westlands,” he said. Police say it is the boyfriend and another lady who discovered the body in the swimming pool when they went to check. “The three were in their room when the lady decided to go for a swim. The boyfriend and the other friend later came out and found her in the swimming pool,” he explained. Koome indicated that the police will record statements from the American boyfriend, the other lady and hotel staff. When journalists visited the Hotel, the guards were tight lipped over the incident but stated that “the police had already been there and finished their business.” It is suspected that the woman drowned after partying all night. State in plans to cap land prices The government is crafting a land evaluation control index to tame the demand for hefty compensation by land owners which has threatened to hold back mega state development projects in the country. If the value index is implemented land and property owners tangled in the acquisition process will only be compensated the ideal amount for the value estimated before the announcement of the project was made. While making the revelations earlier today,
Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi revealed that the unwarranted demands for settlement have significantly increased the cost of projects, adding that some investors had pulled out because of they cannot meet the costs. “The ministry is crafting a regulatory policy that will introduce land evaluation control index that will caution property owners from unreasonably inflating costs in compensation,” Prof Kaimenyi said. You are not off the hook yet, senators warn Governors
Governors who have been grilled by the Senate’s Public Accounts and Investment Committee are not yet off the hook and should not start celebrating that they have been cleared of any financial impropriety, senators have warned. The committee’s chairman and Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o said the county chiefs will have to wait for the final report of the committee to be cleared by the senate before they can breathe a sigh of relief. “This committee doesn’t clear governors, it is important to note that after we have finished all the audit queries, we will write our report and present it to the whole House who will have a final say on it,” Nyong’o said. The committee have been grilling governors of all the 47 counties over audit queries raised by the Auditor General in the 2013/14 financial year. The fate of Nairobi Governor CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs applaud proposal to stop party defectors Two Members of Parliament have supported a proposal by the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on the IEBC to bar aspirants who lose in primaries from decamping to other parties saying it will instill discipline in parties. The committee has in its final report to Parliament proposed tough legislation on party nominations to lock out losers from party hopping. Nyatike Mp Edick Anyanga and his Homa Bay Town counterpart Peter Kaluma said its time politicians believe in party ideologies and live by them. “I totally support the proposal by the Joint select committee, people need to belong to political parties because of their ideologies not what they will get out of them,” Kaluma said. Kaluma said the idea of party hoping is not democratic as it has been made to appear but an indication that an individual only belongs to a party because of selfish interests. “Once someone decides to contest for a party ticket he/she must believe and stand for what the party believes in.
When one jumps out of a party, that undermines the principle that Kenya is a multiparty democracy,” Kaluma said. “When you believe in a political party, you support it through thick and thin even if you have not been elected to any position,” Kaluma added. The Homa Bay Town legislator said the main aim of any political party is to be in power and therefore those who belong to the party should support it at whatever cost and position. Anyanga said there are only two options for an individual when it comes to party matters, either to fully belong to a political party or move out. “You cannot belong to a political party but when defeated in nominations, you decamp to another, that only means that you don’t fully support the ideologies of the party,” Anyanga said. “I fully support that proposal, the committee has done a good work I’m waiting for the report of the committee to be tabled in the house,” Anyanga added. @sam_x254

From Page 1 Evans Kidero, Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Amason Kingi (Kingi), Paul Chepkwony (Kericho), Ali Roba (Mandera) among others now lies with the final report that the committee will retreat to write later this week. West Pokot Senator and the committee’s vice chairman John Lonyangapuo said no governor should celebrate yet before the final verdict is determined by the senate. “We have seen some governors going round their counties and declaring that they have been cleared by this committee, that is wrong, this committee does not clear anyone, we will write our report and all the senators will debate and give the way forward,” he said. “I want to caution them (governors) that it is not yet time to celebrate, the real work is yet to begin,” added Lonyangapuo. Nyong’o said senate’s sole purpose is to protect devolution which also entails making sure that the resources allocated to counties are used and managed by governors.
“When we protect devolution we do it wholesomely including ensuring that the resources are used for the purpose they are intended for,” Nyong’o said. Kiambu senator Kimani Wamatangi urged all governors to honour summons and appear before the committee, saying the committee has no personal differences with any governor. “There is a wrong impression created out there that this committee is out to settle personal differences, that is not true. We carry out audit professionally and governors are given time to respond to any issue or financial impropriety raised in the audit report,” Wamatangi said. Lonyangapuo also expressed the same sentiments saying “we don’t engage in politics in this committee, we don’t let personal differences come in between the work we do.” The committee will retreat for two weeks to write its report and present it to the senate for debate before embarking on audit queries of the 2014/15 financial year. @sam_x254

Lands Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi with Kenya National Human rights Commission commissioner Shatikha Chivusia.
Continued from page 1 He was speaking during a joint forum between the Kenya National Human rights Commission (KNHCR), Ministry of Lands and other stakeholders on the compensation rights of land owners when the government is acquiring land for mega projects. The CS further noted that the evaluation index will regulate the disparities between private and state valuers which has been used by some to move to court to stop the proposed projects. “At times private valuers will indicate higher figures from those of the Ministry, initiate conflicts that eventually lead to court battles,” he added. He observed that the problem has been further compounded by the involvement of middle men where costs are significantly inflated and frustrating the projects implementation. Mega
projects including the SGR, Lapsset and the extraction industry have been halted by various courts in land compensation disputes pitting the government against landowners. “Imagine the case where the Lamu Lapsset corridor alone requires around 10 million acres of land. We must stop these compensation arrangements and resort to relocations of the land owners,” said Kaimenyi. He added: “landowners are unfairly exploiting the provisions in the law that call for compensation for property they have to surrender to the State.” KNCHR vice chairperson George Morara said at the coast where the government has initiated several multibillion projects, local residents have been left at the mercies of mining moguls who have forcefully acquired their property. Morara revealed that a majority of the residents do not have title deeds and

He now wants Cs Kaimenyi to deal with the matter. According to the commission, most of the mining workers are prone to harassment by their bosses, poor working conditions raging from sexual harassment and poor compensation. Morara added that most of the residents are not aware of their rights and thus cannot bargain for a better lifestyle. He claimed that the police and the miners are colluding with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to block cases that touch the mining business class who have been charged for gross violations of human rights. @wilson_x254

Picture that speaks thousand words... Many times war is boiled down to daily stories of how many people were killed, how many were wounded, what places were bombed. The true cost of the bloodshed can frequently be overlooked. And sometimes an image reminds us of the horror of it all. Aleppo is a city in
northern Syria that has been besieged for years during that country’s civil war. Thousands of people have been killed there, and many lives have been upturned. On Wednesday, three more people died and at least 12 others were wounded in the rebel-held al Qaterchi neighborhood in eastern Aleppo,
according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. A video circulating on social media of one of the little injured victims is just heartbreaking. The boy, who appears to be 4 or 5 years old, is lifted out of the rubble of a building that was bombed Wednesday night. A civil defense
worker carries him to an ambulance. His cartoon character T-shirt is covered in dust, the left side of his face is blood red and he is silent despite the cacophony of screaming men around him. His eyes look glassy as he sits on the vehicle’s orange seat, his hands on his lap as he awaits treatment.
Nearly 18,000 have died in Syria prisons since uprising, says Amnesty International report Nearly 18,000 people have died in government prisons in Syria since the beginning of the uprising in 2011, according to Amnesty International. A new report by the charity, based on interviews with 65 “torture survivors”, details systematic use of rape and beatings by prison guards. Former detainees described so-called welcome parties - ritual beatings using metal bars and electric cables. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied such allegations. The report estimates that 17,723 people died in custody across Syria between March 2011, when the uprising against President Bashar Assad began, and December 2015 - equivalent to about 10 people each day or more than 300 a month. According to the report, new detainees are subjected to “security checks” that often involve women being sexually assaulted by male guards. “They treated us like animals.
They wanted people to be as inhuman as possible,” said Samer, a lawyer from Hama who was among those interviewed. “I saw the blood, it was like a river... I never imagined humanity would reach such a low level.” Another inmate, Ziad (not his real name), described how seven people died in one day after the ventilation stopped working at an intelligence agency detention centre. “They began to kick us to see who was alive and who wasn’t,” Ziad said. Other detainees described being forced into a rubber tire or whipped on the soles of their feet. Amnesty says prisoners are routinely denied access to medical care and prevented from washing properly. “For decades, Syrian government forces have used torture as a means to crush their opponents,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa Director. “Today, it is being carried out as part of a systematic and widespread attack directed
against anyone suspected of opposing the government in the civilian population and amounts to crimes against humanity,” he added. A UN human rights report in February accused the Syrian government of carrying out a state policy of extermination, and said both sides in the war were suspected of committing war crimes. Amnesty has called on the US and Russia, which co-chair peace talks on the Syrian crisis, to address the reports. Talks have stalled however, with world powers failing in May to agree on a date for the process to resume. Talks in Geneva broke down in April after the opposition delegation quit, accusing the government of ignoring a ceasefire agreement. More than 250,000 people have died in almost five years of war in Syria, with a further 11 million people displaced by the conflict, according to the UN.

Big car bombs hit two Turkish cities Two big car bombs have hit police stations in separate cities in Turkey, killing six people and wounding at least 219 others. The first attack targeted a police station in the eastern city of Van, killing one police officer and two civilians. Some 73 people were hurt. Hours later, a police station in Elazig was hit, killing at least three police officers and wounding 146 people. Turkish officials blamed the Kurdish militant group, the PKK. The PKK has carried a series of bombings targeting the police in the largely Kurdish south-east since a ceasefire with the government broke down last year. Television footage showed plumes of smoke rising above the destroyed police building in Elazig. The force of the blast blew out nearby cars, uprooted trees and left a large crater outside the building. At least eight people were killed in two attacks on police vehicles in nearby Diyarbakir and Kiziltepe last week. Since last month’s failed coup in Turkey, there has been much talk of national unity. But this has not included the pro-Kurdish political party which the Turkish authorities say supports the PKK, correspondents say. The pro-Kurdish HDP denies any link to the militants.

ICT Ministry’s new policy will get more tech companies to bourse The Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) sector is expected to have a new National ICT Policy in the next 30 days once a review of the 2006 policy is complete. ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru says the new policy will create an enabling environment that will allow a lot of ICT companies to list at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). “A lot of companies in this sector have come of age and it is time they joined the NSE as it will not only encourage growth but also help us understand the value of the sector. You can see how companies like Safaricom have performed. To date the share is still on demand. So I would encourage us all to take this route,” he said. The CS noted that the move to have a new policy is as a result of tremendous changes in most in the ICT sector in terms of introduction and use of new technology that need to be regulated and manage them to avoid competition conflicts. “The move to revise the 2006 National ICT Sector Policy Guidelines has been necessitated by rapidly growing technology and will guide the sector over a decade,” said CS Mucheru. He added that the review process is in the final stage of stakeholders consultation before it is handed over to the Ministry for compiling and finally, to the Cabinet. “The stakeholders are going to give us the final comment, and at the ministry we will go through it and compile it and it will be tabled at Cabinet. And then we will have a new policy. So we are expecting that to happen within the next, let’s say 14 to 30 days,” Mucheru

issues, the other at devices, applications and content while the third sectoral group has been looking at how the policy will address new and emerging issues. A draft document on the policy guidelines was developed in 2015, but

CBK governor calls on students Reprieve for farmers as country set to embrace culture of service to commence production of fertilizer Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge has urged over 4,000 beneficiaries of the Equity Foundation Wings to Fly scholarship programme to embrace the culture of service for patriotic leadership. Speaking during an annual mentorship programme congress dubbed ‘Ethical leaders for a global society’ at Kenyatta University, the CBK chief shared some tips on the best way to become good leaders by self-nurturing a culture of service. He noted that the effects of globalization have changed the way people do things and also stressed the need to be part of the revolution. “There’s need to guard your core values but you also need the right attitude towards what surrounds you locally and globally,” said Governor Njoroge. He also encouraged the students to believe in themselves, stating that this
kind of belief would help them overcome substantial obstacles in leadership. “It’s not about what you are given but what you have in your heart; be the best you can be at all times. Leadership is not about scratching my back I scratch yours,” he added. As part of Equity Bank’s commitment to the development of the individual, scholars in the Wings to Fly program participate in an intensive leadership and mentorship program throughout their secondary school education. This culminates every year in an annual congress that brings together all Wings To Fly Scholars. Known as the Annual Education and Leadership Congress, the two-week session at Kenyatta University is the highlight of the leadership, mentoring and social transformation of the scholars under the Wings To Fly program. @enock_x254
Kenya is set to commence production of cheaper fertilizer at the end of this month, a move that is set to be a boon for both farmers and taxpayers. As part of the drive, a Sh120 billion plant based in Eldoret is expected to produce 150,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer. Once the project succeeds, taxpayers will no longer be burdened based on the latest data from the Auditor General, which revealed that the country pays close to Sh350 million to ghost fertilizer companies annually. Furthermore, farmers, especially those from the North Rift Region and Western region, will have access to cheaper fertilizer beginning in next planting season, a move that would further boost their production output per unit area. Toyota Tsusho East Africa Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akira Wada,
confirmed earlier this month when he hosted Uasin Gishu Governor Mondago that the firm will commence its operations before the end of this month. “Farmers will be buying fertilizer at a fairly cheaper price compare to what they were used to. We are doing this to ensure that we as a country play a major role to ensure production of enough food thus kicking hunger out of the nation,” said Wada. Maize farmers have, in the recent past, faced difficulties during the planting season while dealing with unscrupulous brokers. It has emerged that these middlemen buy fertilizers at a retail price then sell it back to farmers at more expensive prices, a move that has been deterring small-scale growers from accessing fertilizer. @enock_x254

Real estate sector gears up for biggest homes expo in East and Central Africa THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2016
Stakeholders from the country’s real estate sector are gearing up for the 2016 edition of the Kenya Homes Expo, the biggest homes show in East and Central Africa. This year’s Kenya Homes Expo, a one stop-shop for all matters real estate, comes at a time when potential homeowners have developed a growing appetite for detached houses. This is according to the latest data by real estate experts, Hass Consult. Sakina Hassanali, Head of Research and Marketing at Hass Consult said in a recent statement that an increase in asking prices for detached houses could be as a result of a growing appetite for properties that have larger space, offer lawns and garages.
The Homes Expo seeks to cash in on this, among other trends taking shape within the industry. In a statement released just hours ago, the event’s organisers acknowledges their partners and welcomed stakeholders, homeowners and investors to the October 27 event. “As we count down to the region’s biggest homes show, we are happy to welcome on board Home Afrika,”a spokesperson on behalf of the group said. The Kenya Homes Expo is the region’s biggest homes show, bringing a wealth of expertise harnessed for over 13 years. Targeting the entire African region with a major focus on East and Central Africa, the Kenya Homes Expo is an experiential platform that creates a level ground for real estate players to
converge with a ready market for land, homes, financial advice and general real estate information. The Kenya Homes Expo is a brand of HomesKenya Limited, publisher of HomesKenya Magazine, a magazine that focuses on the real estate and interior décor industry in East Africa. “The Kenya Homes Expo remains one of the best places to network and consult with real estate industry players without the hassle of making appointments. Expect an elaborate display of architectural finesse, decor artistry, state-of-the-art gadgetry, home finance solutions, Eco living and home security systems and much more,” Homes Knya said in a statement. The expo is supported by institutions
from the Kenyan Government and professional bodies like the Ministry of Lands, Housing and urban development, Nema and the Architectural Association of Kenya among others. The Expo comes at a time when Land prices in satellite towns have risen by 8.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2016 and 15.3 per cent over the year, according to the latest report by Hass Consult has revealed. This represents the first double digit annual growth since 2014. Based on the data, Ruiru recorded the highest asking price increase in land at 19.8 per cent amongst satellite towns followed by Limuru at 14.5 per cent, Juja at 13.6 per cent and Ruaka 11.3 per cent. On average prices in the 18 Nairobi
suburbs increased by 2.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2016. Muthaiga was the best performing suburb with prices increasing by 13.1 per cent while Upperhill had the most expensive land with an acre going for Sh517 million per acre. Kitisuru was the worst performing suburb recording an average asking price decline of 0.3 per cent “With average price for land now at Sh178million per acre, investors are now opting to buy property which they can rent out in the short term and sell in the long term. Most investors are opting to buy properties which are easier to offload than an acre whose high price makes it harder to find immediate buyer,” said Ms. Hassanali. @enock_x254

Wealthy consumers, along with Kenya’s rapidly-growing middle-class population are flocking into mixed use developments as standard housing units continue to lose their appeal. The latest research by real estate group, HassConsult has found that though detached housing units are increasingly popular, high-end units that offer commercial, retail and leisure facilities are quickly becoming the preferred properties for the elite. “Market demand is highest for developments that have enveloped high-end commercial, retail and leisure offerings on one site as they are able to attract a strong footfall. Such properties will command price appreciations of up to 40 per cent on top of average market rates,” said Ms. Sakina Hassanali, Head of Research and Marketing at HassConsult. These revelations follow HassConsult’s announcement of Montave, its high-end mixed use development. The project, which will further change the skyline in Nairobi’s Upperhill area is set to become a towering behemoth, boasting 40 floors and standing 160 meters high. HassConsult has stated that the development is set to deliver Nairobi’s most-prestigious address, offering the best in luxury, practicability at a convenient and central location. Montave is a proposed development that presents an intricate mix of shopping, working, visiting, living and leisure at 3.54 acre site in the Upperhill financial district of Nairobi, Hass Consult said in a statement. Construction of Montave is expected to begin in the second half of 2017 and is expected to be completed within three years. “We have kick-started off-plan sales where we are offering the one bedroom luxury apartments from Sh8.9million, Sh12.9million for the two bedrooms and Sh22.9million for the three bedroom apartments,” said Ms. Hassanali. The growing popularity of mixed use developments is evident in the construction of Konza Technopolis and the erection of luxury malls and shopping facilities. Just weeks ago, Kenya’s government signed an agreement with the United Nations housing agency to standardize the development of Kenya’s Konza Techno City. The agreement between the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) which is overseeing the development the Konza city project and the UN Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) will see Konza City serve as a case study and benchmark for future developments within the African continent. Principal Secretary in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Ministry, Victor Kyalo, said the adoption of a standard in the development of Konza Techno city will form the guiding framework for the planning of other cities across the continent as governments seek to strike a balance between growing urban populations and limited resources. “The City guidelines developed in partnership with UN-Habitat will support us in overcoming the challenges currently faced by other cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu,” the PS said. @Dennis_x254

Survey shows sugar is causing cancer, killing close to 28,000 THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2016
Broadway Bakery Ltd has released a survey of scientific studies revealing that sugar is causing cancer, with sugar in hot beverages alone linked to increased incidences of colonic and rectal cancer, and sugar recently found to be a trigger and accelerator for breast cancer. The survey comes at a time when Kenyans are ranked among the highest consumers of sugar in the developing world. “Kenyans are becoming more aware of the high risk of diabetes caused by excessive sugar consumption, but we believe that few have yet realised that sugar is, itself, directly carcinogenic,” said Mr. Bimal Shah, Managing Director of Broadway Bakery, which has launched its own privately-funded public education campaign to raise awareness in an effort to slow the soaring death toll being caused by excessive sugar consumption in Kenya. Noble Laureate Otto Warburg first discovered that cancer cells do not need oxygen to survive, as other cells do, but can feed and grow directly from pure, un-metabolized sugar. Historically, humans only absorbed metabolized sugar from vegetables, fruits and other natural sources. But the take-off in confectionary and added sugar has seen the arrival of sometimes large amounts of un-metabolized sugar in consumers’ blood streams. “With the now high prevalence of cancer in Kenya at an estimated 39,000 new cases and more than 28,000 deaths a year, Kenyans should be aware that there is a close link between high sugar consumption and the risk of developing certain types of cancer,” said Dr. Kirtida Acharya, chairperson of Diabetes Kenya. The way in which sugar accelerates the growth of cancer cells has since been known as the Warburg Effect and sees doctors advise cancer sufferers to immediately stop consuming sugar, with a 2011 review of Warburg’s work reporting that cancer cells use 10 times as much sugar to grow as ordinary cells, meaning that the body requires extra
In 2013, scientists in Singapore and Denmark found that “immature sugar molecules aid in the growth properties of cancer cells sugar to fuel the growth of cancer. In 2013, scientists in Singapore and Denmark found that “immature sugar molecules aid in the growth properties of cancer cells.” Last year, research published by the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) in the journal Cancer Research was one of many more studies again that reported: “Our data provides strong evidence that added sugar (sucrose) accelerates the development of breast cancer.” The studies on sugar and cancer have also delivered mounting evidence that sugar does not only accelerate cancer growth, but also acts as a trigger in causing cancer. Typical was a 1993 study in Northern Italy that found that people who took sugar in their coffee or hot beverages were more likely to develop colon and rectal cancer than
those who did not. Catherina Steentoft, a scientist in the 2013 AACR study, commented that understanding the link with sugar might eventually help in developing better cancer treatment. “This is part of how we will proceed in the battle against cancer. When you know a certain process is important for the development of cancer you can start to consider ways to affect this process in a way that stops the cancer cell from taking advantage of it,” she said. This has since seen scientists turn to anti-sugar drugs as possible cures for cancer. One such drug is metformin. Traditionally used to treat type 2 diabetes by decreasing the amount of glucose released into the bloodstream, this age-old drug is now being tested as a viable treatment for cancer.
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is now sponsoring trials of the drug as a cancer treatment, as is the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the US. “We have seen sugar taxes introduced across the world to deter consumers from sugar and pay for the ballooning healthcare costs caused by lifestyle diseases that are the result of excessive sugar consumption. But we believe that consumers are not deliberately exposing themselves to cancer. They simply do not know that cancer cells feed off unmetabolized sugar, which is why we are seeking to raise awareness and put people back in control of their health, especially as almost everyone is affected by cancer either directly or indirectly,” said Mr. Bimal Shah. @kevin_x254

Kenya rides on success of past meetings to host Innovation Africa 2016 summit
Riding on the successes of previous meetings that have been hosted in Nairobi over the past 12 months, Kenya is set to host yet another ministerial conference dubbed the Innovation Africa Summit. Innovation Africa 2016 will leverage its position as the continent’s number one high level ministerial forum to ensure the participation of over 40 countries with 90 ministerial invitations. We aim to exceed all previous attendance records. It is now Africa’s ‘must participate’ event for education, innovation and ICT. The Summit will run from September 20 to September 22. “I am delighted to be hosting Innovation Africa 2016 and will ensure
the participation of all key actors from my ministry, the ministry of ICT, the Teachers Service Commission, the leading universities & technical colleges and at the same time making sure we work closely with AfricanBrains to maximise the participation of African countries and ministries of education, ICT and science & technology,” Cabinet Secretary Hon Fred Matiang’I said in an earlier address. AfricanBrains, an organisation that is part of the Brains Network, which was founded by managers working in Africa and the Middle East, is working closely with the Cabinet Secretary to maximize the ministerial attendance at Innovation Africa thereby fulfilling our promise of delivering high-level, pre-
scheduled meetings to participating partners and delegates. The group has said participants at the Summit will have the choice of booking meetings with ministers of basic and higher education, ICT, science & technology together with special government agencies for education, universities and technical colleges in advance. In 2015 over 220 government officials represented 31 countries, and this year in Kenya we will have the support of a record number of ministers, all of whom regard Innovation Africa as the essential event to meet their counterparts, industry leaders and solution providers. @Dennis_x254

The Kansoul to collabo with Lizha on coke studio

K
TN anchor Betty Kyallo is a lot of things but the one thing she is not is a pushover. The smart and apparently sharp as a whip, presenter unleashed her fury on Twitter recently when she was bombarded with unwelcome ‘tweeps.’ In a conversation that started innocently enough dealing with her favourite Hip-hop songs, a user going by the handle @rileyarnie tweeted, ‘ooh? We have so much in common..We should have dinner sometime.’ Betty Kyallo was ostensibly, not having it. The next tweet that came from her account was funny but still a little alarming. ‘The only dinner we will have is me on tv sipping water and you at home as you eat’, she wrote in the post. From there she tried to save the situation but it was too late, she

had already taken over Twitter with her #SomeoneStopBettyKyallo hashtag. Although it is quite funny to witness celebrities feuding with common people, it should not be as enjoyable as it ultimately is. At the end of the day are they not just people? Maybe the surprising aspect comes in when a public figure who we all think is relaxed by all appearances unleashes a barrage of insults on some unsuspecting victim. Singer Rihanna is famed for her clapbacks. Her social media proves that she does not suffer fools kindly or take any insult or even random observation lying down. When a user commented on the fact that she had worked on a song with Chris Brown despite his abusive past, writing ‘I gotta admit, I lost alot of respect for @rihanna.. Makin a song w/ the dude that beat your face off is not a good look,’ Rihanna was a woman on a mission. Throwing the ultimate shade with her reply, ‘@JuhReeV neither is your avi #clapback’ The singer is also not afraid of starting internet feuds with other artistes. Famously giving Ciara a run for her money. After the former commenting on a TV show that

Dstv viewers on the Premium, Compact + and Compact bouquets will be spoilt for choice with a wide selection of authentic African music and stars. Channel 325, will be home to TRACE Naija, and will serve as the premiere destination for lovers of Afrobeats and the wider African music. Music lovers from East Africa can look forward to the best in contemporary East African music on TRACE Mziki, channel 323. TRACE Mziki will also broadcast a selection of the best of “rest of Africa” and international urban acts that are massively popular in East Africa. Both channels will offer a variety of content from localised shows such as “Guest Star” which puts the spotlight on today’s hottest African stars, “Focus”, “Urban Gossip” and Top 10 themed programming.
Rihanna was rude to her when they met at a party, the Bajan princess gave her Twitter fingers a workout by posting, ‘My bad ci, did I 4get to tip u?,’ Ciara shot back, ‘Trust me Rihanna you don’t want to see me on or off the stage’ which then led Riri to post ‘Good luck with bookin that stage u speak of.’ The soulful Solange, despite having one of the most famous sisters on the planet is not one to bite her tongue when she is not happy. Speaking on Miley Cyrus’ performance at the MTV Video Music Awards she wrote on her Twitter account ‘It’s just so fun to “play black” huh?’ Even the POTUS has been known to throw shade a time or two. During the State of the Union Address, a group of Republicans decided to question him about his agenda for the upcoming years, President Obama was clearly irritated by the query and mentioned, “I have no more campaigns to run. I know because I won both of them.” That one deserved a mic drop.

t’s not everyday that we get to see all our favorite teen and tween TV stars in one venue so when we actually do, we have to savor every moment of it. Most people take pride in their national flag so we can only imagine the annoyance Chinese citizens felt when the flag used in the medal ceremonies was a bootleg version of the real one. Usain Bolt ran his fastest time of the season to win his Olympic 200m semi-final in 19.78 seconds as Justin Gatlin missed out on a place in the final. Jamaica’s Bolt has already won the 100m and is now aiming for an eighth Olympic gold by retaining his 200m title. But American Gatlin (pictured below), who won silver behind Bolt in the 100m final, only finished third in his semi-final. Britain’s Adam Gemili, 22, reached Thursday’s final (02:30 BST, Friday) as one of two fastest losers. Gatlin, 34, banned twice for doping offences, clocked 20.13 and failed to progress along with another big name - Yohan Blake. The Jamaican, who won silver behind Bolt in London four years ago, has been hampered by injury over the past couple of years and faded to finish sixth in 20.37 seconds. LaShawn Merritt, who has run 19.74 this year, is likely to pose the biggest challenge to Bolt in the final. But Bolt believes he can break his world record of 19.19 and could even go under 19 seconds in the
final. “I definitely think I can try for the world record, I definitely feel that,” he said. “I need to run efficiently and get into the straight and run the perfect race.” Bolt said he would have a better chance of achieving his goal to run under 19 seconds if he gets a high lane, adding: “If I get a lower lane it’s always harder for me to run the corner when it is tighter.” On Gatlin’s exit, Bolt told BBC Radio 5 live: “Everybody’s in shock. You can tell from the 100m he’s getting old. It’s a fact the older you get, the rougher it gets to double. “Next year if I go to the World Championships [in London] I’m not going to double. I’m going to do the 100m and that is it.” Bolt has won all seven of his previous Olympic finals, claiming gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012. In in the 200m semifinal, the 29-year-old was laughing as he crossed the line just two hundredths of a second ahead of Canada’s Andre de Grasse. “Andre was supposed to slow down. He didn’t,” he joked. “I said: ‘What are you doing, it is the semis?’ He said he had to push me. “I was a bit lazy, I don’t know why, but I executed it.” American sprinter Gatlin remains a divisive figure in athletics, having returned to the sport after serving two bans. He claimed Olympic bronze at London 2012 and silver behind Bolt in the 2015 World Championships. After missing out on 100m gold on Sunday, he fell short in the 200m after appearing to lose focus when he glanced across the track 60 metres from the finish. Gatlin, who ran 19.75 last month - the second fastest time of the year, said afterwards he had been hampered by an ankle injury. “I’m happy to still be here for the relays,” he said. “My ankle is giving me a lot of problems. I can’t run properly and I had a tight turn in lane three.”
Arsenal target Mahrez extends Leicester stay Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has signed a new four-year contract with the Premier League champions ending weeks of speculation that he could join rivals Arsenal this summer. The Algeria international, 25, had been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this summer. He scored 17 goals and added 11 assists last season and was voted the Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year. He played full-time as the defending champions crashed to a 2-1 loss at promoted side Hull City last weekend in their opening fixture. He now joins team-mates Wes Morgan, Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel and Andy King in signing new contracts. Manager Claudio Ranieri has also signed a new four-year deal and, after losing midfielder N’Golo Kante to Chelsea, has repeatedly reiterated his desire to keep hold of the club’s top players. Mahrez joined the Foxes from French secondtier side Le Havre in January 2014. Meanwhile Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is considering a move away from the club after being dropped for the first two games under Pep Guardiola. Everton and Spanish side Sevilla are interested in
taking the England star. With just two weeks left of the transfer window, Hart, 29, is only interested in a loan move in order to examine his options. Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Claudio Bravo have been linked with moves to City. It is understood Guardiola and Hart, who knows he has no future at the club, have not built up any kind of relationship, with Guardiola saying on Friday that Hart does not have the time to become the kind of ‘sweeper-keeper’ he is looking for. “I am not saying he’s not able to do it - with training he can do it,” said Guardiola on Friday. “With time. But his time is now. It’s not about what happens in six months, seven months.” Guardiola opted to start with Argentine Willy Caballero against Sunderland and in City’s 5-0 Champions League qualifier victory over Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday. Hart has made nearly 350 appearances for City in all competitions since joining them from Shrewsbury in 2006. He was England’s most senior player at Euro 2016 behind Wayne Rooney with 63 caps, but he had a disappointing campaign with mistakes against Wales and Iceland as England were knocked out in the last 16.

BETTING HIGHLIGHTS Brazil’s Neymar Jnr celebrates after scoring against Honduras during their Olympic semifinal match last evening. The hosts set up a gold match against germany who were 2-0 victors over Nigeria in the other semifinal match.
It’s Brazil v Germany in 2016 Olympic final N
eymar scored after only 14 seconds - the fastest goal in Olympic football history - as Brazil thrashed Honduras 6-0 to reach the men’s final in Rio. The hosts will next face Germany, 7-1 winners against Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, as goals from Lukas Klostermann and Nils Petersen gave the European side a 2-0 win over Nigeria. Neymar and Gabriel Jesus both scored twice for Brazil in their convincing victory. Marquinhos and Luan also scored to take them into their fourth Olympic final. Brazil have never won gold in the men’s football competition, losing in the finals in 1984, 1988 and 2012. Saturday’s game will kick off at 21:30 BST and be played in front of a capacity crowd of 78,000 at the Maracana. The final is being seen as an opportunity for the hosts to atone for their embarrassing 7-1 thrashing by Germany in the 2014 World Cup semifinal in their own backyard. Tipped to win the competition on home soil for the first time, Brazil, without the injured Neymar, were 5-0 down after only 29 minutes on their way to their heaviest ever World Cup defeat. Rogerio Micale, coach of Brazil’s Olympic football team, said his side would cope with the expectation from the home fans. “We are going to deal with the pressure as we have done so far,” he said. “We knew there would be a lot of pressure to win the gold medal as this would be an unprecedented achievement. “We will work as we have done
from the start and we will deliver results by striving to our absolute utmost. We will give our all - our football is not just about quality, but also perspiration which is why we can hope to make our big dream come true.” Brazil began their campaign with goalless draws against South Africa and Iraq and were booed by their own fans after their second match. Nevertheless, they reached the final by easing to victory over an outclassed Honduras side, who qualified from the group phase at the expense of Argentina. After Neymar, who played in the 2-1 final loss against Mexico four years ago, gave Brazil an early lead, they never looked like losing. No other Brazilian player had touched the ball when the Barcelona forward dispossessed Johnny Palacios close to the edge of the penalty area and shot at goal. The ball hit goalkeeper Luis Lopez, who had charged out to try to smother the shot, and rebounded off Neymar into the net. Team-mate Jesus, who has joined Manchester City in a £27m deal but will stay with Palmeiras until December, then twice ran clear to score as Brazil opened a 3-0 lead after only 35 minutes. Marquinhos added a fourth, powering home from close range when unmarked following a corner, before Luan tapped in after substitute Felipe Anderson’s run. Neymar got his second goal of the match with a 92nd-minute penalty after Palacios fouled Luan.
