Kenya turns to China for cheap vaccines
Kenya has turned to china for cheap vaccines in a bid to boost its capacity to fight preventable diseases in the country. The two countries will also collaborate to strengthen bilateral ties and reinforce cooperation in the area of public health systems and policies to achieve the universal health coverage and health security. Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Cleopa Mailu said the ties were part of the government’s commitment for a healthy nation including cheap and accessible medication. ‘’Kenya is willing to further the good relationship by partnering with China in the health sector particularly in establishing her own drug administration that would ensure public health safety for her citizens more so on vaccines,’’ Dr. Mailu said. He made the revelation when he received in his office on Thursday, a Chinese delegation led by the Assistant Minister for China Food and Drug Administration, Mr. Guo Wenqi. Mailu observed the need for vaccines, saying it cuts more than 75 per cent of the cost of medication and disease infection. Early in May, close to two million children were vaccinated against polio after it emerged that out of 1.5 million children born annually, about 200,000 fail to develop immunity which puts them at risk.
