he National Assembly could be forced to forgo its September recess to debate and consider proposed amendments to the electoral laws by the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reforms. The recess is scheduled to start on Friday next week until October 2. However, MPs will now be forced to re-consider postponement of their one month vacation, as plan by the main political coalitions is to have a new commission by the end of the next month. The report by the select committee proposing radical changes in the electoral commission for free, fair and transparent elections was tabled in senate and Parliament on Thursday last week. The Senate and National Assembly has already lined in the order paper the electoral reforms report and draft bills developed by the select committee ready for debate tomorrow afternoon in both Houses before it would be adopted and implemented. Kenya retracts on repatriating Somali refugees as Kerry visits the country MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 2016

The decision by Kenya to repatriate Somali refugees to their country by the end of the year has been put on hold until peace is restored in the troubled horn of Africa country. The announcement came barely hours before US Secretary of State John Kerry touched down in Nairobi for talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta. Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Joseph Nkaissery said that Kenya had rescinded its initial position to repatriate the Somalis for the moment until a relative sense of tranquillity resumes in Somalia. Nkaissery said that the verification of persons residing at the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County had been finalised. “We said verification should be completed by the end of July which we have done. I have the report with me. So we are in the right direction. We are just waiting for the world to pacify Somalia for them to be able to go,” said Nkaissery. Mr Kerry’s visit will focus on discussions around the security situation in both Somalia and South Sudan. The US official jetted into the country last night. A volatile situation is currently in existence in Somalia, a country that has known no peace since 1991 after the overthrow of Siad Barre by armed opposition groups. Early today, at least 20 people were killed and several others wounded in twin suicide blasts in the central Somali town of Galkayo in what has become the norm in the country.

US Secretary of State John Kerry when he arrived today in the country. He was received by US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec, Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohamed and her PS Dr Monica Juma.

The CS however assured that despite the latest directive, plans to repatriate the over 500,000 refugees in the world’s largest refugee camp are still in force. Kenya made the bold decision to send

home the refugees, majority from neighbouring war-torn Somalia in June citing the camp being used as a breeding ground for the terrorist outfit al-Shabaab.

The country also defended its position saying that supporting the refugees in the Dadaab and Kakuma camps was putting a strain on the Exchequer, denying ordinary Kenyans essential

services from the state. The two camps are relatively huge and can be deemed as small towns with a combined population of nearly a million. Kenya, Somalia and the refugee agency UNHCR had signed a tripartite agreement in 2013 which would have seen the voluntary repatriation of Somali refugees afflicted by war to their original homeland. The United Nations and United States had initially opposed Kenya’s move but later accepted the country’s decision, albeit warning that it should be on a voluntary and that no one should be moved by force in the exercise. The state has already set aside Sh1 billion for the exercise that is expected to begin on December 2016. Nkaissery said Kenya will further present its case in a UN meeting in New York on 20th of September this year where the modalities of the repatriation will start. Kenya, which has hosted Somali refugees for more than two decades had indicated early in the year it would close Dadaab camp by November 30 this year. The directive yesterday coincides with US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to the country. Kerry jetted into the country last night on a mission to improve business relations, boost counter-terrorism measures and stabilise the region from civil war. The US has been in the forefront urging Kenya to reconsider its position until the security situation in Somalia stabilises. @harrison_x254

MPs to forego September recess to discuss election laws From Addressing Page 1a parliamentary journalists conference organized by Kenya Parliamentary Journalists association (KPJA) to discuss the role of Parliament in the next year election in Mombasa Saturday , Muturi said the lawmakers will have to make ultimate sacrifices to speed up processing of the Bills on electoral reforms as the country looks forward to the next elections. “The process of ensuring free and fair elections in 2017 has started after the tabling of the IEBC reforms report in the Senate and the National Assembly,” he said, adding that the route towards electoral reforms gained momentum. Muturi urged Kenyans to be patient for the recommendation by the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee to be debated and approved by legislators before the current IEBC Commissioners leave office. Speaking at the same event, IEBC Chief Executive Ezra Chiloba welcomed the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reforms.

Chiloba disclosed that the bulk of the committee’s proposals are in line with the IEBC’s plans on how to handle the next elections and the changes to the laws they had recommended to Parliament. “I have just read the recommendations of the select committee in the report and I am happy to note that more than 80 per cent of their recommendations are from the IEBC’s election preparation plan,” he said. The select committee, which was chaired by Senators Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) and James Orengo (Siaya), has proposed sweeping changes in the electoral process that should be implemented before next year’s General Elections. Key among them a dignified negotiated vacation from office of the current commissioners and composition of a selection panel to conduct the process of recruiting new commissioners. The committee also wants a legal framework established for the verification of the principal register of

voters and use of ICT during the 2017 elections. The recommendation that an international audit company clean up the voters register could also spark debate between Jubilee and Cord on who should appoint the auditor. The proposed law seeking to block politicians from hopping to other parties after nomination will also debate and put into a vote. However, it is likely to meet huddles in the National Assembly as other Member of Parliament have planned to block the proposal, saying that it will breach democracy. The proposers of the bill say, it’s a ploy by some politicians who are sure of getting the party ticket to block their political rivals from competing with them in the coming polls. Deliberation on the report of the joint parliamentary select committee on matters relating to the independent electoral and boundaries commission is eagerly awaited. @hillary_x254

Uhuru expresses South Sudan concern to Kerry President Uhuru Kenyatta Monday met US Secretary of State John Kerry and discussed the security situation in South Sudan, Somalia and combating terrorism. President Kenyatta told Secretary Kerry that the recent violent skirmishes in Juba have serious implications for the implementation of the Peace Agreement signed in August 2015. The President expressed concern that implementation of the agreement has been sluggish and under severe threat due to lack of commitment by the parties involved. Following the resurgence of armed conflict, President Kenyatta informed the US Secretary of State that the IGAD Council of Ministers met in Nairobi last July and created a roadmap to restore normalcy in South Sudan. “This was followed by the IGAD-Plus Summit of Heads of State and Government in Kigali, Rwanda in July 2016; and later in Addis Ababa in August 2016,” President Kenyatta said. The Head of State commended the US Government for its leadership role in sponsoring the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 2304 of 2016. The President thanked the US Government and the international community for standing with the region in support of the South Sudan peace process. On Somalia, President Kenyatta urged the US and the international community to continue engaging in the Horn of Africa country proactively to sustain the stabilization efforts. He informed the US Secretary of State that implementation of governance and state formation as envisioned in the Somalia Vision 2016 is in progress.

Two KDF soldiers among five suspects arrested with explosives

Two military officers are among five suspects arrested over the weekend after they were found with explosives in Lang’ata, Nairobi. The two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were arrested alongside three civilians – all accused of selling explosives, according to police. “The five suspects are in custody and the explosives they had are being analysed by experts,” a senior police officer told Capital FM News while confirming the Sunday arrests. The suspects were first detained at the Lang’ata Police Station before they were handed over to Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU). ATPU officers were reluctant to comment on the matter, and there was no official statement from police or the military headquarters. They were likely to be arraigned in court later today.

President Kenyatta observed that the combined forces of AMISOM and the Somalia National Army have registered a remarkable progress on the security front. Noting that the African Union plans to drawdown AMISOM by 2018, the President underscored the need to mobilize resources to carryout effective operations and build capacity of the Somalia National Army to take over the mandate. Secretary Kerry expressed support for Kenya’s leadership in seeking and finding solutions for regional security. He said the US looks to Kenya for continued leadership in efforts to secure the region and boost economic environment. President Kenyatta and Kerry noted, with satisfaction, the strong bilateral ties between Kenya and the US. They also applauded the increasing the investment in Kenya by US firms. The State House meeting was also attended by Cabinet Secretaries Amina Mohamed (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) and Prof Judy Wakhungu (Environment and Natural Resources) among other senior government officials. Malaysian singer Namewee held for ‘insulting Islam’ Police have arrested a popular but controversial Malaysian singer, after complaints that his most recent music video “insulted Islam”. Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was detained on Sunday. He is known for his profanity-laced music The offending video, for his song Oh My God, was first released in July and features him rapping in front of places of worship around Malaysia. Namewee insists that Oh My God was intended to promote religious harmony. But on Monday Malaysian police remanded the 33-year-old singer in custody for four days to investigate him for “defiling a place of worship with intention to insult religion”. The charge carries a jail term of up to two years. About two thirds of Malaysians are Muslim, though the country also has significant Buddhist, Christian and Hindu populations. The latest version of the video uploaded to YouTube on 20 August, however, does not appear to include a sequence in front of a mosque. Ethiopian runner Lilesa now fears for his life after daring Olympic protest Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia may have turned himself into a political exile because of the way he won a silver medal in the Olympics marathon on Sunday. He strode across the finish line with his arms crossed over his head in a sign of solidarity for the Oromo people, his native group and the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. He repeated the sign at a press conference. In an interview after the race, Lilesa said he wanted to draw attention to the government’s ongoing persecution of the Oromos. By speaking out, he said, he put himself into such danger that he can’t go home. “I really think that I would be killed,” he said -- or imprisoned. Some of his family members are already in prison, he said, and he worries about the safety of his wife and two children. Lilesa said he may stay in Brazil or go to Kenya or the United States, depending on whether he can obtain a visa for those moves. It’s unclear if his gesture with the arms will affect his medal. In the past, the Olympics committee has stripped athletes of their medals for political protests, as when American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the black power salute on the medal stand at the 1968 games. The Oromo make up at least a third of

Ethiopia’s 100 million people. But they have been marginalized for decades, with tensions rising recently as the government promoted development that took over over Oromo farmland. Huge protests by the Oromos have swept the streets of Ethiopia. The government was brutal in putting down the demonstrations, nonprofit groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reported. “In nine months, more than 1,000 people have been killed,” Lilesa said on Sunday. His claims could not however be immediately verified. Human Rights Watch said that since November, more than 400 people have been killed and tens of thousands arrested. Thousands more have been jailed. “Human Rights Watch’s research indicates that security forces repeatedly used lethal force, including live ammunition, to break up many of the 500 reported protests that have occurred since November 2015,” the group reported on its website. In a report on the Oromos, Amnesty International said at least 5,000 Oromos were arrested because of peaceful protests or opposition to the government between 2011 and 2014. Lilesa won silver yesterday with a time of 2:09:54, finishing behind Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya.

on Sunday at Kuala Lumpur International Airport after returning from an overseas trip. On Monday, he posted a statement on his Facebook page (in Chinese) where he says the intention of the Oh My God video was only to promote religious harmony. He responded to people asking why he had returned to Malaysia when he could have evaded arrest by staying abroad by saying that he had done nothing wrong. “If I’ve not done any wrong, why should I run and hide? [Malaysia] is my home, my land.” Singing in Mandarin Chinese, Namewee is also hugely popular in Taiwan and China. But this is not his first brush with controversy. In one of his previous videos he questions Malaysia’s national energy provider over a blackout and another video featured a parody of the national anthem, which almost landed him in jail.

The price of medicine in the US has become a central issue in the presidential campaign.

Equity Group registers 18pc profit, Sh10b revenue jump

Equity Group has posted an 18 per cent growth in profit after tax for the first half of 2016. Sixth Ticad summit to unlock business opportunities

The sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-VI) to be held from August27 to 28, 2016 in Nairobi, will unlock investment opportunities in both the country and the continent at large. This is according to the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the main organizer of the conference. OSAA is working closely with all the other TICAD co-organizers and the Government of Kenya to ensure that the conference adheres to its mandate. The two-day summit will pay much attention on Africa’s development needs, peace and security concerns, as well as open a multilateral forum for mobilizing and sustaining international support for the continent’s development under the principles of African “ownership” and international partnerships. As part of the TICAD-V framework, Japan committed to allocate $26 million (Sh2.6 billion) to support the consolidation of peace and stability in the Sahel Region. During the last TICAD-V in Yokohama in 2013, the Government of Japan pledged to provide $32 billion (3.2 billion) in funding, with an emphasis on infrastructure and human resource development, based on African ownership and international partnerships. The conference will further address all barriers hindering private sectors from thriving. @enock_x254

Kenya pledges economic support to South Sudan to overcome challenges

The government of Kenya has pledged that it will support South Sudan to overcome economic challenges it is currently facing triggered by civil war in the country. Through the government spokesperson yesterday, the Kenyan government said it would assist the youngest African nation to the best of its abilities. South Sudan, had pleaded with East African nations Kenya and Uganda last week for economic support to avert a humanitarian crisis after a fresh conflict brought the country to its knees. A source close to the discussions with the Kenyan President intimated that Mr. Gai who led the delegation to State house implored President Kenyatta to give his country a soft loan to help it deal with its current problems. A delegation of Transitional Government of South Sudan officials led by First Vice-President Taban Deng Gai was in Kenya last week on a mission seeking a bailout. “The delegation to Nairobi, which included four

ministers, met with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Amina Mohamed and a number of government officials. The South Sudanese delegation made requests regarding the possibility of Kenya supporting their country at this time when they are facing severe economic challenges,” said government spokesperson Manoah Esipisu. He further revealed that the meeting concluded that the Government of South Sudan sends a delegation to Nairobi to deliberate on the subject. It is expected that after the delegation meets with the Kenyan team, led by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, an assessment would then be made and the President advised on a workable front to rescue South Sudan. South Sudan has in the past months been embroiled in a civil war that has seen the country’s economic situation worsen as investors escaped the war. South Sudan relies on Kenyan traders

for key supplies including food, edible oils, pharmaceuticals, electronic products and manufactured goods. South Sudan will also be reaching out to neighboring Uganda to work out a bailout package aimed at paying its traders debt so they can resume supplying the country. Uganda is South Sudan’s biggest trading partner and exports maize, vegetables, sugar, iron and steel, cement, beer, motor lubricants and detergents. “The vice president will go to Kampala to request the Ugandan government to pay traders who supplied cereals to Juba but haven’t been paid. The money will then be converted into a loan, for which Juba and Kampala officials will work out a repayment plan,” a diplomatic source said. Even as it seeks a bailout, South Sudan is yet to pass a new budget for the 2016/17 financial year. The UN and AU has sent troops to South Sudan to help quell the violence. @kevin_x254

Maize farmers to lose 90 per cent of their produce ahead of harvesting Maize farmers in at least four Counties in the North Rift region are likely to lose up to 90 per cent of their produce to head smutdisease as they near the harvesting season. This in according to latest research from the Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with the Kenya

Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service, (KEPHIS) and Kenya Seed Company. The research has found that crops belonging to all farmers who practiced organic farming such as rouging have been affected by the disease regardless

of the variety. “The team conducted thorough surveys and investigations of the problem and unanimously identified it as head smut of maize. Investigations further revealed that all varieties of maize were affected,” Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr Richard Lesiyampe said in

statement on Saturday. The Counties include Nandi (Ol’lessos area), Elgeyo Marakwet (Kamoi area), Trans Nzoia (Endebess) and Uasin Gishu (Moiben). Head Smut is a fungal disease affecting cereal crops including maize, sorghum and grasses. Infection by smut fungi

starts in the soil and the fungi will grow silently through the plant during the growing season without exhibiting distinct symptoms and the spores survive in soil for many years. The typical signs of the disease are exhibited during flowering by masses of black puffed up galls on the cobs and tassels containing millions of spores which spread the disease over long distance as they become airborne. Lesiyampe confirmed to farmers that agricultural officials through the ministry have started engaging with farmers on how to control the spread of the disease going forward. “Some of the management practices recommended to the farmers include; deep ploughing, burning of infected plants and crop rotation as well as use of certified seed and balanced soil nutrition fertilizer,” he said. Data from the World Bank revealed that maize farmers were losing close to 30 per cent of their produce to Post-harvest losses, a vice that is spearheading hunger in Sub-Saharan @encok_x254 Africa.

US Secretary of State to hold bilateral talks with Kenyan Government U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Nairobi, Kenya, where he will hold talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta to bolster diplomatic relationships as well as strengthen trade ties between the US and Kenya. Kerry who was received at the JKIA last night by Foreign affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed is also expected to meet with East African countries foreign affairs ministers to look into ways to stop neighboring South Sudan from sliding back into civil war and prevent it from drowning in an economic crisis. Kerry is scheduled to meet with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta today before joining the other ministers for talks on how to make sure peace is maintained in the world’s newest country. South Sudan has been troubled almost since the day it gained independence from Sudan in 2011. Civil war, violence and territorial disputes with Sudan have made it difficult for the oil-rich country to thrive. Kerry and the African foreign ministers also plan to discuss the situation in Somalia, which is looking toward upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections to help bring stability. “The people of South Sudan have suffered for far too long,” a senior State Department official said. “The continued instability there has led to almost a million refugees and a humanitarian crisis that is far beyond the abilities of even the international community to respond to.” Later this week, the US secretary of state is expected to make a stop in Nigeria. @kevin_x254

ACCESS Kisumu-based hip hop collective 411 Society is on the rise. Cutting a niche for themselves as a slick yet rough around the edges band, this troupe is ready to make their mark on the scene. Composed of group members Jimmy Oyuko (Cornrows), Tyler Omune (Tyler), Larry Jones (Chris Lax) and Cliff Makori (Obizy), XACCESS had to get all the 411 on this society.

@christine_x254

Society

T

ell us about your sound Basically we do Urban HIPHOP with RnB fusion but the most unique thing about our sound is the Luo vibe we incorporate into the music. How did you get your start in the industry? Setting up our own studio was a major starting point for us. We then launched our music label called HITITTES Music which is made up of the 411 Society, Chris Lax, Ojwok Photography and Dj Anam who are all based in Kisumu. Also, our local fans have by far been our greatest pedestal during this journey, a lot of our thanks goes back to them. What would you say is the message of your music? 411 Society addresses current issues affecting all of us hence the name ‘411.’ Our message targets every member of the society since we intend to encourage everyone who listens to our music plus espousing a few life skills which is evident from our previous mixtapes (2 22s, Care less, U-musik, 3c s & FACTS) and now gODzILLER which is yet to be released. Who inspires you? We get our inspiration from music groups the likes of

Sauti Sol, Camp Mulla and a few other individuals who have taken their music to the next level in terms of international acclaim. They surely impart positivity in their music and we have always believed in ourselves to do the same. What are you working on currently? We just shot an expensive mainstream music video for our new jam ‘MaiYe’ (Chris Lax, 411 Society X Flaqo Raz) this is to be released on the 29th of this month (August), besides that, we are currently working on our mixtape gODzILLER with 16 tracks that includes songs like ‘MaiYe’, ‘OTM’ (On The Map), the 2015 award-winning song ‘Chalnade’ and more material underway. Are there any artistes, both established and new, that you would love to work with? Yeah, we would like to work with old school hip-hop artistes and singers the likes of Didge and maybe Sauti Sol. Do you ever listen to your own music on your playlists? Affirmative…we have them on our MP 4s, laptops, iPhones and of course in town and our music plays every time the phone rings [laughs]. Which event/stage would you just love to perform? One word, GRAMMYS.

Timmy T Dat steals show at starstudded Celebrity Pool Party

Usain Bolt has danced his way into a storm of controversy on his 30th birthday after he was sprung grinding away on the dance floor with a woman in Rio. In typical fashion, the flamboyant runner took to the stage at the De Bracos Albertas club - delighting revelers and fans in the process. Bolt, who is in a long-term relationship with girlfriend Kasi Bennett, afterwards disappeared into his hotel room with a 20-year-old Rio student identified as Jady Duarte. The young student shared photos of her in bed with the sprinter to a WhatsApp group chat which were later leaked. The video of the twerk session and the leaked photos have since gone viral with the public feeling sorry for the gold medalist’s fiancée. Bolt made an early exit from Rio departing a day earlier than planned and missing the Closing Ceremony entirely.

NCWSC triumph at water games Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Board Chairman Mr. Nzomo (in grey coat) joins the company’s managing director Eng. Phillip Gichuki (fifth from left) and other Nairobi City Water team in celebrating their win (overall position one) now won for the 7th year in a row.

Rio Olympics 2016: Brazil’s footballers exorcise demons of past to lift nation Brazil will always associate itself with two football tragedies at home, but now it finally has a defining moment it can be proud of. The 1950 World Cup final defeat by Uruguay in the Maracana, and the crushing 7-1 semi-final loss to Germany in Belo Horizonte at the 2014 World Cup can never be erased, but by winning their first Olympic football gold, the hosts can at least point to a new chapter in their story. Before the game, fans talked of “revenge” over Germany, but Neymar’s winning penalty also made this Brazil’s most successful Olympics as they won a sixth gold medal for the first time. For a Games staged amid continuing social problems, and with relatively few golden moments for the host nation, the deafening noise at the finale was symbolic. As Neymar sunk to his knees in tears, the 78,000-strong crowd bellowed “o campeao voltou” (the champions are back), a song which has echoed throughout the past fortnight and gave a sense of Brazil’s restored confidence after a bruising past few years. Neymar missed the humiliating loss to Germany two years ago (known as the Mineirazo) after he fractured a vertebrae in the quarter-final win over Colombia, but it hasn’t stopped him from being asked what went wrong and if Brazil could ever recover from one of the worst episodes in the team’s history. Both Brazil coach Rogerio Micale and Germany counterpart Horst Hrubesch

tried to play down the relevance of the rematch, pointing out there would be no-one on the field who played in the World Cup. But fans outside the Maracana were unconvinced. “It was a disaster and we want revenge,” one said. “Brazilian football has not been the same since.” Many supporters felt Brazil would win easily, but as Germany hit the woodwork twice, then equalised through skipper Max Meyer after Neymar’s opener, there seemed a growing anxiety among the crowd that history might repeat itself. Three previous Olympic final defeats did not help the mood; indeed when players wasted opportunities, the fans let them know of their frustration in no uncertain terms. So when Neymar walked towards the penalty spot, kept his cool under remarkable pressure and scored to Timo Horn’s left, the outpouring of emotion was as deafening as it was heartfelt, as the demons from two years ago were banished. And there are those who think it can point to a brighter future. “After the World Cup and what happened against Germany, I think Brazil’s self-esteem was damaged,” said former international Rai. “I think the first gold medal can mark the new era for Brazilian football.” Though Neymar was absent in Belo Horizonte, he still felt the pain and has played in these Olympics like a man determined to heal the wounds

and prove he could win a first major international title. This is a player used to winning trophies on a regular basis with Barcelona but, like club-mate Lionel Messi, has had only limited success in international football. As captain, and one of the over-age players in the under-23 squad, he proved to be perfect leader material, chasing back to help out in defence as much as he kept his cool in front of goal. His prodigious work-rate led to a goal after just 15 seconds of the semi-

final against Honduras, and, in the final, he was cajoling and encouraging his team-mates until the final minute of extra time before he took centre stage. After a bruising few years from a political and football point of view, Brazilians needed a role model to lead them forward, and the 24-year-old sealed his hero status on a night the country will never forget. “The only thing on my mind was I had to do this,” said Neymar, who stepped down as captain after the game. “I have fulfilled my dream.”

Neymar celebrates after scoring the winning penalty during the final shoot-out in the men’s Gold Medal match against Germany at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday night. PHOTO: ALEJANDRO ERNESTO/EPA

While foreign tourists and media were worried by petty crime and fears over the Zika virus, the problems facing Brazil’s residents have been a lot more serious. Crippling cuts, political upheaval and an uncertain future have provided a backdrop to the Rio Games, with some locals questioning whether the cost of hosting the Olympics has been worthwhile. With some tickets costing more than the monthly minimum wage, at times the Games has felt like an event for international tourists, media and the more moneyed residents of Rio. The attendances in stadiums have certainly reflected that, with sports outside those traditionally favoured in Brazil seeing many rows of empty seats. But on the occasions Brazil have thrived, the supporters have celebrated with fervour, no more so than during the football tournament. At first, success came from more unexpected sports. When judoka Rafaela Silva won a first gold for the host nation, the screams could be heard around the whole city as locals watching in street bars burst into the street. More golds followed. But could the football team deliver? No gold medal was more important to Brazil, and Neymar was untested in this sort of scenario. But his penalty ensured that, however the Games are regarded from other points of view, for many Brazilians they can now be considered a success. That is the power of football in Brazil.

Tusker beat Homeboyz 1-0 to go 7-points clear at the top of the table Tusker FC narrowly beat Kakamega Homeboyz in Nakuru last evening to open a seven point lead at the summit of the Sportpesa Premier League. Danson Kago scored the only goal of the match in the second half as the brewers eased to a relatively comfortable gap, though second placed Gor Mahia did not play over the weekend. In the late kick-off, AFC Leopards played to a barren draw against relegation threatened Nairobi City Stars, a point that will be most valuable to the Kawangware based side which remains perched at the bottom of the log. The point reduces the gap between them and 15th placed Sofapaka to just one, with the latter having lost by a solitary goal to Posta Rangers at the Ruaraka Complex in Nairobi. The two results give Ken

Kenyatta and his Ushuru side a sigh of relief with the gap between them and the relegation places remaining seven points. Sofapaka would have cut it to four points, but they fell to a Timothy Otieno first half goal with the striker returning from a three month injury lay off. But while Sofapaka, City Stars and Ushuru put up their tact to avoid the chop, Tusker may be as well putting their tact on point to ensure a smooth sailing to an 11th league title. Against Homeboyz, they were a far cry from their best and struggled to threaten Homeboyz keeper John Waw save for set pieces and cross balls which were easily dealt with. ue leaders had their opening opportunity in the eighth minute of the match when Owusu headed across the face of goal from a well weighted Antony Ndolo cross with Andrew Kulecho clearing the

mess for a corner. It was Homeboyz who had the chunk of chances and former Tusker striker Andrew Murunga was guilty of missing all of them. In the 16th minute he attempted a shot from the outside of his foot that went awry after the ball graciously ricocheted on his path after Osborne Monday blocked as he attempted to pick out Ali Bhai on the far right. Ten minutes later, he dribbled into the box from the right but his attempt at beating Tusker custodian David Okello from the tightest of angles proved futile. At the start of the second half, Tusker woke from their slumber and in the 65th minute, Kago’s low drive sent them ahead before they were however reduced to ten men after George Mandela got his matching orders for a second bookable offense. Arsenal loan out Campbell to Lisbon Arsenal forward Joel Campbell has joined Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The 24-year-old has been with the Gunners since 2011 but struggled for first-team football. He scored four goals in 30 appearances for Arsenal last season, with three of those coming in 19 league outings. Costa Rica international Campbell has previously been on loan at Lorient, Real Betis, Olympiakos and Villarreal. “Everyone at Arsenal wishes Joel a successful season in Portugal,” said a statement on Arsenal’s website.

Hammers in happy new homecoming in London MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 2016

Campbell has not been in Arsenal’s squad for either of their two opening Premier League games so far this season. Meanwhile West Ham striker Andy Carroll has been ruled out for between four and six weeks with a knee injury. The 27-year-old was injured during Thursday’s 1-1 draw away to Romanian champions Astra Giurgiu in their Europa League play-off first leg. Hammers boss Slaven Bilic told BBC Sport: “Hopefully it will be four weeks. It’s nothing major. But it’s very sad for him and us. West Ham also lost £20m clubrecord signing Andre Ayew to a thigh injury for four months.

Michail Antonio scored five minutes from time to give West Ham victory over Bournemouth in the first Premier League match at the London Stadium. Antonio rose highest at the back post to head in Gokhan Tore’s cross and decide a game of few chances. The goal came eight minutes after Bournemouth’s Harry Arter was sent off for a second bookable offence. Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc saved well from Enner Valencia in the first half, while Adrian denied Joshua King. A club-record 56,977 supporters were in attendance as West Ham played their first league match at their new home, having left Upton Park at the end of last season. As the players came on to the pitch, the traditional bubbles were blown in to the air and their club song played over the tannoy. For the most part the home supporters were fairly quiet, though, with the vast arena meaning they are not as close to the pitch. In fact, the noise levels were so low the travelling Bournemouth contingent chanted “is this the Emirates?” in reference to the atmosphere at Arsenal’s stadium. But having seen their team concede late in Monday’s league defeat by Chelsea and Thursday’s Europa League qualifying draw

with Astra Giurgiu, the Hammers fans had a late goal of their own to cheer when Antonio nodded in. “It was difficult, we knew it would be. The guys did brilliantly. We just deserved it.

Kipchoge caps Kenya’s good show in Rio with men’s Marathon gold Eliud Kipchoge left the rest of the field trailing to win the Olympic men’s marathon and hand Kenya its sixth gold medal on a rainy day in Rio Sunday. The 31-year-old, who won the London Marathon in April, dominated over the closing stages to finish in two hours, eight minutes and 44 seconds. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia came in 70 seconds later to take the silver, with American Galen Rupp collecting bronze. Kipchoge’s win also capped what is Kenya’s best outing at the Olympics since the country made its debut at the 1956 Melbourne Summer Games. Kenya concluded the Rio Games with a tally of 13 medals: six gold, six silver and one bronze, a big improvements from the two gold, four silver and six bronze medals Team Kenya won in London four years ago. Only Beijing Olympic in 2008 comes close to the feat achieved in Rio. Then, the late Samuel Wanjiru won Kenya’s first ever gold in marathon to cap a medal tally of 14; six gold, four silver and four bronze. In Rio, Kipchoge had been tipped to win the race, and he displayed great composure under the treacherous weather conditions making it look all too easy as he burst into a sprint in the final 100m of the race unchallenged to clinch

the gold medal. “It was a bit slow so I decided to take over,” said Kipchoge. “I was coming here for gold and so it feels great. I felt I had a little bit in the tank and it was comfortable, it was very comfortable. This is the best win of my life,” he added. His victory completed a marathon double for Kenya following Jemima Sumgong’s victory seven days earlier on the same course. He has now won seven of the eight marathons he has entered, and he adds marathon gold to the 5,000m silver he won in 2008 and bronze in 2004. Britain’s Callum Hawkins, 24, led midway through the race and the Scot finished ninth in a time of 2:11.52. Hawkins’ brother, Derek, finished 114th with a time of 2:29.24, while fellow Briton Tsegai Tewelde failed to finish. “Top 10 was the big goal, that was what I was going for, so to get that at my first Olympics is really good,” said Callum Hawkins, after only his third marathon. “Hopefully I can go a lot further but the marathon is such an unpredictable sport and you don’t know when is going to be your last one. “I’ll take a break from marathons now because that’s three in 10 months, which is quite a lot for a 24-year old.”
