Why cheaper loans may not benefit Kenyans A majority of Kenyans may not rip from the much hyped bill that allows access to cheap loans. Job seekers to the industry may have a hard time getting a nod as most of the financial institutions will be reducing their human workforce and inclining to the technological world. The Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) will also be shaken until the law is operationalised and the clear guidelines floated from the Treasury and Central Bank. According to the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA), most banks will lock out high risk borrowers who have in the past been enjoying loan facilities at high interests rates. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

The torso of the woman whose other body parts were found dumped in Umoja area in Nairobi has been found. According to police, the torso was discovered near a shop in Kayole stuffed in a sack, although officers say they are yet to identify the woman. “Investigations are still ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.” The body parts which included legs, hands and head were found stuffed in a black paper bag and dumped near a primary school in Umoja. The body had had been neatly chopped and kept in a fridge for a while before being dumped in the area. Members of the public have been urged to help identify the woman whose head, hands and legs were found late Monday and taken to the City Mortuary. Police had concluded that the woman was most likely killed in a house within the estate before the body parts were stuffed in a polythene bag and dumped near Fadhili Primary School. The officer in charge of investigations in Buruburu division Jeremiah Ikiao said no suspect had been arrested and urged the public to also volunteer any information they have to help in the investigations. He said they have taken finger prints to help identify the deceased woman from the registration of persons department. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Jubilee to MPs: Don’t amend IEBC report Jubilee parliamentary leadership has asked legislators not to subject the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) report to any further amendments when it comes up for debate this afternoon. House Majority Leader Aden Duale and Majority Whip Katoo ole Metito said if amended, the report would water down the motion that established the joint select committee on IEBC reforms. “I am appealing to our members and colleagues in Cord, we must take a position that the report should not be amended but adopted in totality,” said Duale. “No comma, full stop nor semi colon that should be amended, he added, noting that it would be tragic and miserable for the country. Duale further implored on the MPs not to amend the subsequent joint bill that has been drafted by the Senators James Orengo and Kiraitu Murungiled committee. The Majority Leader likened the IEBC report to a special report (National Accord Bill, 2008) presented to Parliament in 2008 , passed in its

Senator still upbeat on Gender Bill Nominated Senator Judith Sijeny has vowed to push to the end the realization of two thirds gender rule despite the Bill suffering another loss in the senate yesterday. A special sitting of the senate yesterday failed to achieve a quorum throwing the two thirds gender rule into jeopardy once again despite the looming constitutional deadline. This was the second time the Bill has failed to sail through in the senate. In a press briefing to journalists yesterday at parliament buildings, Sijeny (pictured) said she will continue with the push of the bill until it is passed. The Wiper nominated senator said despite the looming deadline which elapses on Saturday, the push for the bill will not be scuttled just yet. “The speakers of both houses have powers to do anything to make sure that this Bill is passed. I remain confident that the senate will pass it,” Sijeny said. She said most of the senators are out of the country on committee assignment and two others are out seeking medical treatment hence the failure of the senate yesterday to raise the required number to pass the bill. The senator also attributed lack of quorum in yesterday’s sitting to recess saying it is not easy to get all members during the period. “We should also note that the senate is on recess and therefore getting all members in the chambers is not an easy task,” she added. “Anything is still possible as far as this bill is concerned, for us in the senate we always have a bipartisan approach towards issues of national importance hence I’m still confident that once all senators are back in the country, the bill will sail through,” Sijeny said. “What is important is that by 2017, this two thirds gender rule is in place as a law and therefore I’m not concerned over the issue of deadline,” Sijeny added. She said she has done enough of lobbying as far as the bill is concerned and even amended sections that their male counterparts were uncomfortable with and so there is no any other major problem why the bill will not be

Kenyans may not reap from bill capping loan rates, bankers now say From Page 1 Association Chairman Habil Olaka argues that more than half of loan consumers are rated as high risk borrowers and will be forced to seek alternatives in the informal sector. “Many will be locked out as what we face now is limited access of loans to high risk borrowers,” said Habil while addressing a media briefing earlier today. The banking regulations defines a high risk borrower as a consumer with no financial records and high credit record that can be used as collateral to service loan facilities. Only yesterday, President Uhuru Kenyatta assented to the Banking Amendment Bill which seeks to introduce caps on facilities issued by banks. In the interim, before the law is operationalized within the next 21 days, the existing loans and deposit
supported. The two thirds gender bill has failed in the National Assembly twice. The National Gender and Equality Commission has warned that the next parliament risk being declared unconstitutional over its composition should Mps fail to pass the bill within the stipulated time.
However, Duale sort to clear the air on allegations that the National Assembly had become a rubberstamp of the executive. The Garissa Town MP explained that House leadership had no intentions to turn the National Assembly to rubber stamp or conveyor belt. “I am one person who will be very carefully on anything negotiated outside Parliament,” he stated. Duale, who was accompanied by Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tongi, pleaded with his fellow lawmakers to defend the report from undemocratic forces out to achieve mischievous intentions. “Remember extra ordinary times calls for extra ordinary decision, the end product must be adopted without any amendments,” he stressed. On his part, Metito appealed to his colleagues not to mutilate the report and pass it is in its entire form, since it was a negotiated document, where the committee members rescinded ground to strike a compromise. “We don’t want to put this country into a difficult situation because of our selfish interest,” he posed.
accounts terms will continue to apply. If CBK base rate of 10 per cent is adopted, consumers will access loans of up to 14.5 per cent as the new law limits banks to a four per cent allow over the base rate. Habil allayed fears that banks would increase other charges saying that all cost would remain intact as their motive was not led by profit margins but to service delivery. He observed that while the president move was welcomed by many, the lobby was met with shock since there reservations were not addressed. “As touted the president assented to the interests of many stakeholders but did not address our concerns, “added the chairman. Small banks may be forced to mergers to maintain their market share and come up with new models to offer their services. @wilson_x254

Petitioner: Why Kinisu must resign Failure to declare conflict of interest and getting a tender in the ministry of Health without meeting all requisite conditions are some of the reasons a petitioner has fronted for the removal of anti-graft war boss Phillip Kinisu (pictured). The petitioner, Albert Mukono Ondieki appeared before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee yesterday saying Kinisu failed to strictly adhere to Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and Integrity during vetting as the chairman of EACC. Mukono argued that at the time Kinisu was being recruited as the chairman of the anti-graft commission, he failed to disclose that he was a director of Esaki Limited, a company under investigations over siphoning of millions of shillings belonging to the National Youth Service. “It is my submission to this committee that the chairman should be suspended from office immediately and this committee to recommend to the President to form a tribunal to investigate the conduct of EACC chairman,” Mukono told the committee. He said although Kinisu has so far resigned as one of the Director of Esaki limited, there is no way he can preside over investigations in a company he was once a Director and it is still owned by his wife and daughter. “By proxies, Kinisu is still a director at Esaki Limited, and this is a company under investigations. We all know that as the chairman of EACC, Kinisu has a greater say on the policies and final decisions taken by the commission as far as investigations are concerned,” Mukono told
the committee chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga. Kinisu’s firm received Sh35 million for a tender in February 2014 to supply materials to dig boreholes in Kapenguria at the height of the scam at NYS Kinisu has however dismissed claims that the money was part of the Sh791million lost at NYS as ‘outrageous’ and being propagated by corruption cartels who have been watching his steps keenly. The new EACC chair maintained that he would not resign because that would set a dangerous precedent given that the allegations are ‘unsubstantiated’. Mukono also said another company associated with Kinisu was awarded a Sh 150 million tender to supply the insecticides in a suspect manner. “The company did not have a certificate indicating that it
Mutua to officially launch Chap Chap Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua (pictured) was today scheduled to officially launch the Maendeleo Chap Movement at the Bomas of Kenya. It was expected that delegates from all 47 counties would attend the event and Mutua said it will focus on development and people driven politics. More than 50 MPs, 350 MCAs and many hopefuls were also expected to attend the lauch. The movement has already opened offices in 35 counties. The Machakos Governor has in the past stated that the Maendeleo Chap Chap movement wave is ‘unstoppable’ as it brought a paradigm shift in Ukambani politics which, he said, was now tilting to development instead of populist rhetoric. He had also stated that he will defend his seat on the Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket. Maendeleo Chap Chap and Unity Movement, early this year was declared a political party. He had stated that his decision to defend his seat in 2017 through Maendeleo Chap Chap was inspired by mistrust in the Wiper Party which sponsored him in the last elections.

specializes on insecticides as required by law and therefore this contract was awarded irregularly,” Mukono said. The Legislators however asked the petitioner why he did not disclose the information during the time Kinisu was being vetted for the job. “Why are you coming out now with this information and not during vetting, asked Nyeri Woman representative Priscila Nyokabi? Meru Woman representative Florence Kajuju said the petition lacked serious evidence to prove that there was serious violation of the constitution by EACC chairman. “This looks like a fishing expedition, a petition of this nature must be backed with serious evidence for this committee to recommend to the President the formation of a tribunal,” Kajuju said. @sam_x254

Nema wants Parliament to prioritise debate and passage of e-waste Bill Stakeholders in the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) sector have continued to pile pressure on Parliament to prioritise the passage and enactment of the E-Waste Bill that has been pending in the National Assembly for close to three years now. The bill, Environmental Management and Co-ordination (e-waste management) Regulations, 2013, drafted by the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) seeks to bring sanity in the management and disposal of hazardous electronic material. In an interview, Nema head of enforcement Immaculate Simiyu says lack of a proper legal policy continue to hinder the authority’s capacity to handle the electronic menace in the country. “Inadequate regulatory and policy structures to safeguard health, environment and social consequences of e-waste, as continued to derail the agency’s work to effectively deal with culprits,” said Ms Simiyu. She said due to the limited capacity of government agencies and facilities to deal with e-waste, Kenya is finding itself battling a major challenge emanating from poor handling and disposal of hazardous material. “If the bill will passed, we will have guidelines to streamline procedures of handling and disposal of e-waste generated by various sectors,” she said. E-Waste Management Bill seeks to streamline the importation, management and disposal of hazardous material in the country. “This endangers the lives of both the general public and the workers involved in the recycling process. E-waste, when burnt, causes air pollution through release of toxic emissions, some which are known carcinogens. Poor disposal blocks water channels, contaminates land and compromises scenic beauty,” Ms Simiyu says. “Recycling makes business sense because end of life electrical and electronic equipment contain valuable resources and precious metals such as gold, silver, copper, steel, aluminium, and plastics.”she added. A report authored by the United Nations Environment ProgrammeUNEP indicates that Kenya generates about 12,000 tons of electronic waste every year. UNEP estimates the current e-waste generated annually in Kenya at 11,400 tonnes from refrigerators, 2,800 tonnes from TVs, 2,500 tonnes from personal computers, 500 tonnes from printers and 150 tonnes from mobile phones. The NEMA Head of Enforcement noted that if the bill will passed by parliament as anticipated, it will provide regulations that will facilitate trans-boundary movement of e-waste to create economies of scale and facilitate investment in the recycling sector. It will prescribe harsh penalties for anybody or entity dumping hazardous material illegally. It also seeks to regulate the recycling of the material and transportation of the same. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has so far licensed two recycling centres and one facility to handle old florescent bulbs in Kenya. @hillary_x254
Every year, 39,000 new cancer cases and 28,000 deaths are recorded in the country, placing strains on the existing infrastructure.
Six new cancer machines to boost chemotherapy at KNH Cancer patients will gain access to more radiotherapy sessions with the government set to install six new radiotherapy machines at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The government is keen on increasing access to cancer drugs through direct procurement of chemotherapy drugs and increase the number of specialists at major health facilities in the country. While making the revelations, Health PS Nicholas Muraguri said the project, which is set to be completed before the end of 2017, will accelerate access to health care for cancer patients and ease disease burden. “It is not right that after more than 50 years of independence we only have one public radiotherapy centre. The long waiting queues at KNH can take one year and this puts off a lot of people who cannot afford the costs charged in the private facilities. By end of 2017, we shall install six new sets at KNH,” Dr Muraguri said.
He spoke after meeting Radiation Protection Board officials and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at his Afya House office. Currently, the country has nine radiotherapy machines, three at KNH and four in the private facilities in Nairobi, against a population of 40 million. Every year, 39,000 new cancer cases and 28,000 deaths are recorded in the country, placing strains on the existing infrastructure. This has necessitated the need to expand services in the public sector so as to meet the demand and lift the financial burden. “We are clear on having a continuum of care because one should get the best care regardless of where they are,” underscored the PS. Recently the Ministry has partnered with Novartis Pharmaceutical Company and Roche Pharmaceuticals to reduce the price of cancer drugs for Kenyans. Kenya currently has four radiation oncologists, six medical oncologists and
four paediatric oncologists. The IAEA team is on a fact finding mission that will determine the country’s cancer control potential before sharing its recommendation with the Ministry of Health. Mission Coordinator Igor Veljikok explained that the taskforce will identify any existing gaps in the provision of care as well as ways through which partnerships could be nurtured in the fight against the killer disease. The team will look at prevention and early detection of cancer, screening, treatment and also nuclear medicine. “We will tackle the different gaps in order to get a full picture of the cancer situation in the country. The recommendations will be presented back to the ministry and will include all relevant findings,” he said. Cancer is currently ranked as the third leading killer disease, after infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases accounting for seven percent of total national mortality every year.
Italy earthquake death toll rises as rescuers continue to find survivors The death toll in the Italian earthquake has risen to at least 247 as thousands of rescuers continue efforts to find survivors. Dozens are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy. The search went on through the night, and there was a strong aftershock which rocked already damaged buildings. More than 4,300 rescuers are using heavy lifting equipment and their bare hands. Many of the victims were children, the health minister said, and
there were warnings the toll could rise further. The 6.2-magnitude quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT) on Wednesday 100km (65 miles) north-east of Rome. The latest death toll was given on Thursday morning - 190 deaths in Rieti province and 57 in neighbouring Ascoli Piceno province. Rescuers said they had pulled five bodies from the ruins of the Hotel Roma in the historic town of Amatrice. As many as 70 tourists were staying at the hotel when the quake struck. Many are feared to be in the rubble, though
several were pulled out and given medical care. Late on Wednesday there were cheers in the village of Pescara del Tronto when a young girl was pulled alive from the rubble after being trapped for 17 hours. Almost all the houses there had collapsed, the mayor said. The quake struck small towns and villages in the mountainous area where the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche meet. People there spent the night outside or in tents provided by the emergency services. Among the victims was an 18-month-
old toddler, Marisol Piermarini, whose mother Martina Turco survived the deadly 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila and moved away from there after the experience, Italian news agency Ansa reported. Ms Turco was being treated in hospital after being pulled from the rubble in the village of Arquata del Tronto, Ansa said. The area has also been shaken by strong aftershocks, including a 4.7-magnitude tremor with its epicentre about 7km east of Norcia, according to the US Geological Survey.
The mayor of Amatrice said threequarters of the town had been destroyed and no building was safe for habitation. Many of those affected were on holiday in the region. Some were in Amatrice for a festival to celebrate a famous local speciality - amatriciana bacon and tomato sauce. The country is no stranger to earthquakes: the 2009 L’Aquila tremor killed more than 300 people and in May 2012 two tremors nine days apart killed more than 20 people in the northern Emilia Romagna region.

Reprieve for borrowers as Uhuru approves Bill to cap interest rates President Uhuru Kenyatta has ascended into law the Banking (Amendment) Bill 2015, that seeks to cap interest rates at 14.5 per cent. In a statement, the President explained his decision to sign the Bill into law, saying Kenyans had expressed frustration over the lack of sensitivity by banks. “These frustrations are centered around the cost of credit and the applicable interest rates on their hard-earned deposits. I share these concerns,” said Kenyatta. The Head of State confirmed that he made thorough consultations before making his final decision. “Since receiving this Bill, I have consulted widely and it is clear to me from those consultations that Kenyans are disappointed and frustrated with the lack of sensitivity by the financial sector, particularly banks,” he said. A spot check by the X News business desk has established that Kenyans in the capital support the move, with many praising President Kenyatta for signing the Bill into law. Joshua Kibet, a Small and Medium Sized business owner said he wouldn’t care less as he stopped banking formally owing to high costs and inconveniences having opted for mobile banking instead. “The President’s move is a really good one. Finally we can afford to take loans and pay them back with ease,” Joshua said. Rachael Atieno, supported the government saying she would finally have some faith in the banking system. “It’s unfair that we make a bare 2 or 3 per cent on our savings but have to pay up
CPresident Uhuru Kenyatta when he signed the Banking (Amendment) Bill 2015, that seeks to cap interest rates at 14.5 per cent. to 18 per cent or even more when taking loans,” she commented. The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has said its members will comply with an amended law signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta but said it felt an arbitrary rate cap was not in the best interests of most people and businesses.
“The reality is that there is little evidence from other countries that such interventions have helped the majority of citizens, and in a number of countries such laws have been reversed to promote financial inclusion,” KBA said in a statement. The Bill, which proposes among other
things, to cap interest rates at 4 per cent above the Indicative Central Bank Rate which currently stand at 10.5 per cent, was first sponsored by Kiambu Town MP Jude Njomo. The law could usher in fundamental changes not only for consumers, but also to the financial sector at large. @enock_x254

Bidco Africa denounces London protesters
Bidco Africa has said protesters that demonstrated outside Standard Chartered and Barclays Banks in London on Tuesday are con artists trying to blackmail the company. The East African protesters took to the streets of London on Tuesday to demonstrate against banks that do business with Bidco Africa, highlighting the connection between global financial institutions, the Prince of Wales and widespread deforestation in Africa. Barclays and Standard Chartered saw their London headquarters picketed due to their funding of Nairobi-based Bidco, a company that cuts down thousands of acres of pristine rainforest in Uganda, and engages in human rights and tax violations in Kenya and Tanzania. Bidco says it has been fighting an anonymous and faceless group of online con artists masquerading as activists for over a year. The group has been harassing the company and its partners on social media and via email. It has also been staging fake protests in various locations. The London Protests lack credibility according to the company. “These guys are just bodies for hire. If you watch the video the incredible thing is they cannot even get the company name right. They are protesting against ‘Bisco’ and ‘Vamil Shah’, that tells you all you need to know about these people,” CEO Bidco Vimal Shah explains. “At one point they asked for $500,000 (Sh50 million) to stop the harassment and we said no and so they have kept coming,” he said. “There is no activism here. We know who is behind it and what they hope the pressure will lead to but we will not buckle, we will not give in to extortion,” added Shah. “We also know they have been approaching Public Relations agencies in Nairobi trying to recruit them to run a smear campaign against, we have this information,” he noted. The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) received emails from the group but when they invited them to present evidence-no one showed up. “We asked them to come forward and prove their claims but have heard nothing from them since,” said KEPSA CEO, Carole Kariuki. Bidco Africa insists the claims made by so called activists are outright lies and distortion of facts. The claims of deforestation are manifestly untrue. “No forests were taken in Uganda, there have been four independent Environmental Impact Assessments done and they all give the project a clean bill of health. @Lenah_x254

Asking price for rental housing falls as property market shows promise: Report THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2016
The average asking price for rental housing has fallen marginally in the last quarter of 2016 as Kenya’s property market continues to show promise. The latest report from real estate experts HassConsult has revealed that though 2016 has set new highs as property returns march ahead of land in Nairobi, landlords may have to adjust their projections to meet the needs of new tenants. It has found that overall, asking prices for rents plateaued at 1.5 per cent during the previous quarter after showing a bit of marginal growth since the fall in rental prices in November 2015.
“Growth in property prices in 2016 rallied ahead of land in the city for the first time in 9 years, a phenomenon which has continued to the end of the second quarter,” stated the report. House price gains were strong, despite the slowdown in economic growth, with asking prices up 4.0 per cent on previous quarter. Meanwhile, the data, released in late July found that detached houses recorded the highest increase in houses prices at 5.2 per cent in the last three months, followed by apartments at 3.6 per cent and Semi-detached houses at 0.7 per
cent. Detached houses also recorded the highest increases in rental prices at 2.2 per cent followed by apartments at 1.4 per cent while semi-detached houses didn’t record any changes in asking rental prices in the quarter. HassConsult unveiled the Hass property price indices for the second quarter of 2016 late last month, showing appreciation of property returns ahead of land in 2016 within Nairobi’s suburbs, after 9 years. The soaring property appreciation is a testament that investors are finding the current prices of land unsustainable in the short term.
“With average price for land now at Sh178million per acre, investors are now opting to buy property which they can rent out in the short term and sell in the long term. Most investors are opting to buy properties which are easier to offload than an acre whose high price makes it harder to find immediate buyer,” said Ms. Sakina Hassanali, the Head of Marketing & Research at HassConsult. Properties in Nyari Estate in Nairobi, for instance, have appreciated 10 times more than land over the year ending June 2016 owing to its closeness to many diplomatic establishments
including a host of embassies, the UN Headquarters Complex, and in close proximity to the US Embassy. “Other areas where property continues rally ahead of land include Karen, Kileleshwa, Langata, Gigiri, Lavington, Parklands, Spring Valley and Eastleigh,”said Ms. Hassanali. The Q2 Hass Index found that detached houses recorded the highest increase in houses prices at 5.2 per cent in the last three months, followed by apartments at 3.6 per cent and Semidetached houses at 0.7 per cent. “With most of the existing standalone houses in high development areas like Lavington, Spring Valley, Loresho and Kileleshwa among others having been converted to apartments, there are less standalones houses within the suburbs hence current demand has been able to maintain the high prices and rents,” said Ms. Hassanali. The standalone houses also recorded the highest increases in rental prices at 2.2 per cent followed by apartment at 1.4 per cent while semi-detached houses didn’t record any changes
in asking rental prices in the quarter. The continued demand for houses in Karen saw it record the highest house price increases in the suburbs at 5.5 per cent followed by Nyari Estate at 5.4 per cent, Kileleshwa and Spring Valley at 5.3 per cent. Contrary to property prices in the city, 14 satellite towns recorded the lowest housing prices at 2.9 per cent since August 2015 due to asking price correction. Thika recorded the highest fall in house prices followed by Kiserian, Mlolongo and Kiambu. Traffic hit Mlolongo recorded the highest fall in rental prices at 10 percent in Q2. Rental prices also fell in Tigoni, Ngong, Ruaka and Thika as more completed units join the market. Land remains the best investment avenue in the satellite towns with annual growth rate of 15.3 per cent compared to 12.6 per cent in property. The report states that performance of the real estate sector can further be enhanced by commercial banks lowering rates. The reduction in the base rate by the Central Bank of Kenya should give an impetus to developers and home buyers. @Dennis_x254

‘Industry players should customize products to meet Kenyans’ needs’ THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2016
There is a growing need for tourism industry players to customize their products to meet the dynamics Kenyan consumers, new data has revealed. The launch of the analysis, dubbed the Jumia Travel Report, saw a panel discussion with players in the hotel sector who gave insights on products and the dynamics of the Kenyan customer. The findings are based on booking trends on the Jumia Travel website for the period between 2015/2016, generated by hundreds of travelers on the platform. Speaking at the launch of the report, Cyrus Onyiego, the Country Manager for Jumia Travel cited lack of awareness and knowledge as a major challenge hampering growth in domestic tourism. “Travel is still viewed as a luxurious affair, simply because the (consumer) has very little knowledge on the product,” he said. He called on stakeholders to come up with customized and personalized products for the market, keeping in mind the culture, lifestyle and budget needs for local travelers. A new trend in family travel was also observed. “Families want to travel as one, stay together and share experiences without unnecessary restrictions; this has brought about a new demand for selfcatering cottages and family friendly packages,” stated the report. Rather than trying to replicate products for diverse users, panelists urged hotel owners to adapt to changing needs and target to satisfy personal needs for their guests. While slightly more than half of local bookings on Jumia Travel consist of either nuclear or extended families on holiday, only thirteen per cent (13 per cent) are made of friends traveling as a group. Further, the report indicates that single or individual travelers are equally popular, while business travelers take up twenty three percent
(23%) of the total bookings. Most interesting however, is the observation that men are more popular e-travel consumers than women, with the ratio of male travelers almost doubling that of women at sixty four percent (64%) as compared to women at thirty six percent (36%). A comparative report on Nigeria defies the (Kenyan) family law however, with individual travelers totaling to sixty five percent (65 per cent), while only a meager six percent (6 per cent) travel as family. On Regions and Destinations, the Coast region leads as the most
30%, while still maintaining the same numbers (30 per cent) in the number of room nights registered on the booking platform. Nairobi follows closely behind, with a good 29 per cent of local travelers headed for the city’s room nights, which occupy 27 per cent on the percentage sharing of rooms. Naivasha and Nakuru, which are both increasingly growing as conference centers as well as major escape destinations for leisure and short holidays, take up a combined percentage of 17 per cent in visitor numbers. The region contributes a
Travel. Kisumu and Eldoret are marked out as growing centers partly because of Lake Victoria as an attraction and also as an entry point for cross border travel. Other factors such as devolution and destination awareness campaigns also contribute to the growing attention the two towns are currently enjoying. Mount Kenya accounts for 7 per cent of the nation’s total room nights, while taking up 5 per cent of local travelers. @kevin_x254

Travelers still wary of mobile money transactions
A majority of travelers (55 per cent) prefer card payments (both credit and debit) compared to 40 per cent who go for the mobile payment option, a new survey carried out by Jumia Travel has revealed. The survey states that a major fraction of guests prefer to complete their transactions via Telco-based platforms such as Mpesa and Tigopesa. Cyrus Onyiego, the Country Manager for Jumia Travel Kenya attributes this growing trend to the convenience accorded to both guests and operators by mobile money payments. “Typically, the payment period is immediate, for hotels and other providers, the transaction and payment processing fee is kept minimal, the risk is lowered and the speed of money transfer is immediate, thereby guaranteeing instant gratification,” he said yesterday during a media briefing at a Nairobi hotel. The survey also notes that out of 2,000 hotels featured in the report, 60 per cent allow guests the flexibility to choose when to pay by offering the option to “pay later” (at the hotel upon check in) or “pay now” (at the time of booking). However, 40 per cent of the listed properties prefer to receive their money ahead of the check in date, with some reserving the bookings only after the payment is processed. “More hotels now have consistent and precise rules to guide guests on no-show and canceled bookings as opposed to gray zone fine print that seemed to haunt the industry,” explains Yared Kifle Head of Revenue Management for Jumia Travel East Africa. The report indicates that the coastal region records the highest number of rooms booked that stands at 30 per cent compared with Nairobi at 29 per cent. However lack of awareness and knowledge have been a major challenge hampering growth in domestic tourism, “travel is still viewed as a luxurious affair, simply because the (consumer) has very little knowledge on the product,” added Onyiego. The report also indicated a rising need for hotel owners and tour operators to design products and packages for the emerging group of millennial travelers who may not be keen on luxury as compared to convenience, budget and flexibility. Onyiego called on stakeholders to come up with customized and personalized products for the market, keeping in mind the culture, lifestyle and budget needs for local travelers. The report also indicated a rising need for hotel owners and tour operators to design products and packages for the emerging group of millennial travelers who may not be keen on luxury as compared to convenience, budget and flexibility. @Lenah_x254

echnology seems to have done great things for society but as always there is no good without the bad. A short while ago celebrities were viewed as these untouchable beings that not just anybody could be in the presence off and not just anybody could get access to. This has completely changed in recent times with the advent of social media. Although celebrities are still shrouded in glitz and glam, they are more accessible now than they once were. Who knew such close communication and contact with their fans would lead famous people down some embarrassing paths. Fastest man alive, Usain Bolt had just introduced his beautiful fiancé, 26-year-old Kasi Bennett, to the world before some damning pictures hit the headlines. The photos, which showed the athlete getting frisky with a Brazilian woman had been exposed by the lady in question and it was a little disappointing to say the least. Even though Bolt in recent years has acquired a reputation of being something of a ladies man and a party animal, his willingness to discuss his relationship with the media seemed to mark a turning point for the runner. But apparently this was all for show as the student and single mother-of-two, in the pictures identified as Jady Duarte, has already sold her story to the Daily Mail claiming that it was Bolt who

seduced her. A few years ago a similar story to Bolt’s tryst took place and Lil Wayne was at the centre of the shenanigans. After spending a night with a dancer and groupie only known as Saralyn, she snapped a picture of herself and Lil Wayne in bed and posted it on her Twitter account, despite the rapper’s engagement at the time to fiancé Dhea Sodano. This still isn’t Dwayne Carter’s only contribution to the internet. Just last year a sex tape that involved him and two other women was leaked online. At the time he was said to be dating Christina Milian but this shouldn’t be surprising coming from someone who has fathered multiple children with multiple women. Justin Bieber who seems to have a love-hate relationship with publicity has pictures leaking every other week of him doing something or other. Usually things he should not be doing. Late last year while on vacation in Bora Bora the Biebs saw it fit to walk around in his birthday suit while the paps hid in the bushes. This would have marked one of the few times a celebrity had no hand in releasing their own pics but we all remember The Fappening of 2014 where big celebrities such as Rihanna and Jennifer Lawrence had their nude pictures exposed to the World Wide Web.

ast year during the Taifa Laptop Launch hopes were high for JKUAT as they were one of the pioneering varsities in the country championing tech-literacy and innovation. The institution initiated a laptop assembling plant on site which was great news but apparently the administration had other plans in mind for said laptops. Students and parents realized there was a requirement in the fee structure that had a compulsory deposit of over Sh.40000 to a JKUAT Taifa Laptop Account. Although the administration maintains that it is mandatory for every student to have a laptop, many parents do not see the point of paying such a high price for one when they could be purchased for much lower prices. In a statement to local daily one parent opined, “Why did the university not open a shop in town where we can buy the laptops? The manner in which this whole thing is being conducted is questionable.”

MORE EFFECTIVE POWER SAVING AND DATA MANAGEMENT
Most of the time newer versions of Android’s promises to save your battery from draining in a few hours can easily be overlooked but Nougat’s Data Saver limits how much data you can use while apps are running. It also blocks background applications from siphoning mobile data while Data Saver is in use.
MULTITASKING
This has to be Nougat’s crowning glory. The upgrade has the capability of opening two windows at the same time on the same screen. This means we can operate two apps at the same time. It might not be the best for doing detailed tasks but can a save you a ton of time when it comes to tedious undertakings like copying info from a browser. Still on the multitasking features, users can now switch between their most recently used apps by simply double-tapping the square button (on Google Nexus devices). As opposed to older versions where doing the same
would give you a menu of the apps that are currently running on the phone.
EVEN MORE EMOJI
Emoji has turned into a hallmark of a generation and Google definitely wants you to know that. With over 1500 emoji operating in Android, Nougat has improved this experience by adding internet-favourite bacon and avocados plus 70 other emoji into the mix. Skin tones have increased while gender neutrality has reduced. The more blobby and amorphous emoji have been given human equivalents. @christine_x254

Man City seal Champions League slot as former champions Ajax miss out P ep Guardiola’s Manchester City sealed their slot in the Champions League group stages after a 1-0 win over Steaua Bucharest at the Etihad saw them through with a 6-0 aggregate. Midfielder Fabian Delph scored the only goal of the match as City eased into the draw to be done today in Monaco. However, four-time European champions Ajax missed out on a place in Europe’s elite club competition for the second straight year after losing 4-1 to Rostov of Russia. Russian side Rostov won 5-2 on aggregate to reach the group stage for the first time in their history. It is the second season in a row that Ajax have failed to reach the group
stage - they were knocked out by Rapid Vienna a year ago. Borussia Monchengladbach beat Young Boys Bern 6-1 for a 9-2 aggregate win. Thorgan Hazard, brother of Chelsea forward Eden, and Raffael both scored hat-tricks for the German side against the Swiss team. Denmark’s FC Copenhagen also progressed as a 1-1 draw at APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus secured a 2-1 win on aggregate, while Croat side Dinamo Zagreb won 2-1 at Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg for a 3-2 aggregate win. Roger Federer eyes Australia Open return Roger Federer of Switzerland in action against Milos Raonic of Canada during their semifinal match for the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, in London, Britain, 08 July 2016. PHOTO: PETER KLAUNZER/EPA
Roger Federer is aiming to be fit for next year’s Australian Open after injury wiped out the last half of his 2016 season. Federer, 35, has been out of action since late July - his last match was a Wimbledon semi-final loss to Milos Raonic. The 17-time Grand Slam winner had surgery in February before a back issue ruled him out of the French Open. “I’m working for the Australian Open,” the Swiss said. “I’m doing well.” “I never thought I’d have a year like this. I’ve learned a lot from this year,” added Federer, who missed the Rio 2016 Olympics and will be unable to go for a sixth US Open title when the tournament begins on 29 August. “It’s painful being here in New York, and it was painful during the Olympics because I love competing. But you can’t have it all. “It was a tough decision to say the least - going out of Rio, the US Open, the [season-ending] World Tour Finals. But in some ways it ended up being a simple decision. Health is my number one thing.” Federer was speaking at an event in New York to launch the ‘Laver Cup’, a Ryder-Cup style tournament named after Australian legend Rod Laver and set for September 2017 in Prague, with Europe playing the Rest of the World. Former greats Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe are captains of the respective teams, with long-time rivals Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal set to play doubles together.

Pressure continues to mount on the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) due to growing complaints of mismanagement of Team Kenya in Rio de Janeiro. Ibrahim Hussein, a former Boston and New York Marathon winner, currently one of the nine IAAF regional development officers has waded into the calls for change at the helm of the NOCK leadership. Also a board member of Sports Kenya and a former Athletics Kenya North Rift branch chair, Hussein was in Rio alongside the team and affirmed that indeed there was a lot of mismanagement of athletes and officials by NOCK. “There were a lot of problems in the camp especially the management of NOCK. I think it is high time we need to look at it (management) because the only management they are involved in is commonwealth and Olympics every two years,” Hussein said. He adds; “You cannot believe what was going on there because these are people who are seasoned administrators who are supposed to be very good managers but when we went there everybody was complaining.” “I was supposed to be accredited but I didn’t get my accreditation and I was forced to buy tickets every day. Athletes also had a problem flying there, even in the camp there were a lot of problems,” a visibly dejected Hussein told Capital Sport on touching down from Rio. As well as calling for the removal of members of the current NOCK officials, Hussein believes it is high time for NOCK president Kipchoge
Keino to step aside and leave the leadership of the committee to fresh blood. “If you overstay, you tend to tire. We need some new blood. Dr Kipchoge is a very respected person which we need to recognise but we can make him an honorary chair and not an active one.” “The people who are running it are from these federations who have no one at the Olympics. This is where the problem is; people are guarding their positions instead of assisting athletes. You need to go there with a team that can work and assist the athletes. It is time to objectively try and put some new blood in there,” he offered. The remaining batch of Kenya’s contingent to Rio is expected to touch down in Nairobi on Friday evening with a huge section of the athletes having already returned to the country while some went directly to Lausanne for the IAAF Diamond League. Among the issues that plighted the team in Rio include the allocation of official uniforms with allegations that some of the kits provided for by the official kit partners Nike were diverted by officials for purposes of selling them. There were also issues of accreditation with NOCK being accused of handing games accreditation to ‘joyriders’ at the expense of coaches and officials. Already, President Uhuru Kenyatta has warned of stern action on those found culpable of mismanaging the team and alleged corruption. Members of Parliament on Tuesday also evening said it was time action was taken as well as a change in the leadership at NOCK. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Klopp aims to emulate Liverpool ‘grandfathers’
Jurgen Klopp hopes to draw on the experience of past Liverpool managers and oversee a sustained period of success at the club. Klopp, 49, was appointed in October 2015, and led the Reds to eighth in the Premier League, as well as the finals of the League Cup and Europa League. The German wants to replicate the success of Liverpool “grandfathers” such as Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. “Sometimes you can use the experience of other people,” he told the BBC. “I don’t live in the past but there is a reason why we are here - because of our fathers and grandfathers. These people are like the grandfathers. Life is so quick. What keeps you in the race is the experience.” Klopp was speaking to Gary Lineker on The Premier League Show, a weekly magazine programme which airs for the first time on BBC today. Shankly won the First Division three times, the FA Cup twice and the Uefa Cup once while managing Liverpool between 1959 and 1974, while Paisley won three European Cups, six First Division titles, the Uefa Cup and three League Cups from 1976 to 1983. “I would like to celebrate something each season over the next six years,” he added. “Not the small thing, really celebrate something - driving on the big bus through Liverpool. That would be nice,” he said.

Joe Hart hails special Manchester City night
J
oe Hart says helping Manchester City reach the group stage of the Champions League on possibly his last appearance for the club was “a special night”. Hart, expected to leave with Claudio Bravo close to signing, was applauded by home supporters throughout the 1-0 second leg win over Steaua Bucharest. “We’ve a top manager and he’s going to have his opinion on things,” added Hart, after City’s 6-0 aggregate win. City boss Pep Guardiola said: “I know Joe is a legend for this club.” Hart, 29, was dropped by Guardiola for the first three games of the season but was handed the captain’s armband before marking his first start of the season with a clean sheet. At one point in the second half, the Etihad reverberated to chants of: “Stand up if you love Joe Hart”. He responded by shaking his head and touching the club badge on his shirt. “That was a really special night for me,” said Hart, who joined City in 2006 and has won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup. “We all know there is a situation going on but I feel that inside, outside of
all the circus, we are handling it well as a good team with a good management staff. “Tonight was really nice. I really appreciate the people at Manchester City and it turns out they appreciate me.” “This is a special place for me, I’ve made no secret of that. Situations occur in football. We are men and we get on with it.” Asked if he might be leaving, Hart added: “That’s not for me to say.” Guardiola is expected to complete the signing of Barcelona keeper Bravo in the next few days. Bravo flew into Manchester on Tuesday for a medical. “I’m here to take decisions,” said Guardiola. “I can’t deny what I feel. I was honest with Joe, the club and myself. “I can completely understand if the fans are not happy. Joe did a lot with this club in the years he’s been here, more than I have done. “I know part of what the club has become, one of the reasons is Joe. They won the Premier League, the cup. He helped to make this team one step above. “I am so happy how the people treat him and love him.”
