Quit Jubilee party now, unsettled members told
Unsettled members of the yet to be unveiled Jubilee Party have been asked to shop for new political outfits before the party is officially launched. Jubilee affiliate parties are expected to formally fold up next week ahead of the launch of the new party. But there have been worries by some members who fill they may be unfairly denied the party’s ticket in 2017 even if they win it. As such, some MPs allied to the ruling coalition wanted a window allowed for party hoping in case such scenarios arise. But party steering committee co-chairman Kiraitu Murungi has asked such members to quit before the party is launched on September 10, 2016 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. While insisting that the party is not pushing anyone out, Mr Murungi said they want to maintain only a list of bonafide membership. “Lawmakers and aspirants who feel threatened or have uncertainties of rigged nominations should ship out before the party conducts its primaries,” he said. He was speaking in Ngara, Nairobi during the launch of a Business Plaza in the area. The Meru senator asked those uncomfortable with the merger to leave the ruling coalition
early rather than frustrate the ideals of Jubilee Party when it is already launched. “We do not want a scenario whereby one comes to the nominations with certificates from briefcase parties to frustrate us. We must build a list of do or die members whom we shall build the ideals to run national outfits,” he said. President Kenyatta while unveiling the party last month promised that the nominations will be fair. And Mr Murungi echoed those assurances saying the primaries will be conducted early enough to give room to aggrieved members to appeal. “We shall ensure fairness to all contestants. Unlike in the past, where nominations were done a few days to the elections, resulting in chaotic nominations, this time round we will have nominations done three months before the elections,” added Kiraitu. His sentiments came just hours after a Jubilee parliamentary group meeting chaired by Deputy President William Ruto at his Karen residence. The DP insisted that the leadership was keen to block party hopping ahead of the party launch. “We are not opposed to party hopping, but what we want is a situation where we can decide to be members of certain political parties based on
Deputy President William Ruto with some Jubilee MPs during yesterday’s Jubilee Parliamentary Group Meeting at his official residence in Karen. He asked the legislators to tighten the laws on party hopping even as he pleaded with them to unite behind the yet to be launched Jubilee Party.
their ideologies before the parties’ nominations are held,” said Ruto. Ruto said lawmakers should join parties they feel comfortable with because that was their democratic right. He is said to have warned MPs who will not comply that the party may resolve to issue direct nomination in their areas. In the National Assembly later in the afternoon, the contentious clauses locking party aspirants from party hopping were subject of intense lobbying even as MPs prepare to debate two
Bills that seek to improve the electoral process. After amending the report of the joint select committee and expunging the section that barred political aspirants from jumping ship to another outfit after losing in the nominations, the House was confronted with an Election Laws (Amendment) Bill that had clauses that made it impossible to change political allegiance.

Recovered loot to build rehab centers, safe houses President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the over Sh500 million Jersey corruption case proceeds will be used to construct drug rehabilitation centres and safe houses for women to protect them from gender based violence. The President emphasised that his administration will not relent in its war against corruption. “Those who loot public money will be forced to return it,” President Kenyatta said. He was speaking Wednesday at State House, Mombasa, when he addressed over 8000 youth, women and elders drawn from the six counties of the Coast region. He assured of his government’s commitment to mainstreaming youth and women affairs in the development agenda. The Head of State also urged Coast residents to walk with the Jubilee Government in development. He outlined various development projects his administration has implement in the region since it came to office ranging from infrastructure and water projects to electricity connections and issuance of title deeds. “We are delivering the promise we made. We have constructed more
roads, connected more houses to electricity and issued more title deeds in the last three years than had been done since independence,” President Kenyatta said. The Head of State reiterated his call to the people of the Coast region to unite and work together regardless of tribe, religion or political party affiliation. “The needs people have know no
religion, tribe or political party,” President Kenyatta said. Kilifi North Member of Parliament Gideon Mung’aro and Mijikenda Community Council of Elders secretary Vincent Mwachiro spoke on development, saying the region will support the Government because of the projects it has implemented. Mung’aro cited the Kaloleni – Mavueni, the Mariakani – Kaloleni,
Maji ya Chumvi-Voi, Mwatate – Wundanyi, Mwatate – Taveta, Bamba -Mariakani, Malindi – Sala Gate, Malindi – Garsen and Lunga Lunga-Vanga as some of the roads that are either complete or are under rehabilitation. Other projects are street lighting, water and irrigation projects, Mung’aro said. Other speakers were Rev. Samuel
Kobia and Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet who spoke on peace and cohesion. Cabinet Secretaries Joseph Nkaissery (Interior and Coordination of National Government) and Sicily Kariuki (Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs) outlined what their ministries are doing to promote security and gender equality respectively

Brazil impeach president, install new one Brazil’s Senate has voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office for manipulating the budget. It puts an end to the 13 years in power of her left-wing Workers’ Party. Ms Rousseff had denied the charges. Sixty-one senators voted in favour of her dismissal and 20 against, meeting the twothirds majority needed to remove her from the presidency. Michel Temer has been sworn in as president and will serve out Ms Rousseff ’s term until 1 January 2019. The centre-right PMDB party politician had been serving as acting president during the impeachment proceedings. During his first cabinet meeting since the vote, Mr Temer said his inauguration marked a “new era”. He asked his ministers to “vigorously defend” the government from accusations that Ms Rousseff ’s dismissal amounted to a coup d’etat. “We can’t leave one accusation unanswered,” he said during the meeting, which was broadcast live on television. He also told ministers to work closely with the Congress to revive the Brazilian economy. Mr Temer is travelling to China to take part in a summit of the G-20 group of major economies. The dismissal of Ms Rousseff has caused a rift between Brazil and three left-wing South American governments that criticised the move later on Wednesday. Brazil and Venezuela recalled each other’s ambassadors. Brazilian envoys to Bolivia and Ecuador have also been ordered home. Ms Rousseff lost the impeachment battle but won a separate Senate vote that had sought to ban
Get rid of ghost workers, Senators tell governors
Counties have urged to clean their wage bill and ascertain the number of their employees in order to eliminate ghost workers. Senators through the Public Accounts and Investment Committee (PAIC) said by doing so the counties will be able to address to perennial issue of bolted wage bill that has ailed the devolved units. This came after the Auditor General questioned the amount totaling Sh31 million paid by county government of Kiambu to unspecified number of its employees. Appearing before the committee to answer to the audit queries, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo defended his government, saying the payment was done to the workforce inherited by the former municipal councils, but could not tell the number of employees that were paid. Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi and Mombasa Hassan Omar sought more clarity, demanding to know why the county government had not made a deliberate attempt to clean its wage bill in order to save taxpayers money. “Indeed Kiambu has continued to lay off unnecessary skills and workforce in attempt to redefine our wage bill,” Kabogo said in his response to the senators. @hillary_x254

her from public office for eight years. Pledging to appeal against her dismissal, she told her supporters: “I will not say goodbye to you. I am certain I can say: ‘See you soon.’” She added: “They have convicted an innocent person and carried out a parliamentary coup.”
Anti-Temer demonstrations were held in many cities, including Brasilia. Born in 1947 to a Bulgarian immigrant father and an ex-communist, Ms Rousseff grew up in an upper middle class household in Belo Horizonte. She joined left-wing movement against Brazil’s
military dictatorship which had seized power in 1964 and was detained in 1970 and imprisoned for three years. In detention, she was subjected to torture including electric shocks for her role in the underground resistance but came to political prominence as the protege of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who governed Brazil from 2003 to 201. She was sworn in as Brazil’s first female president in 2011 and re-elected for a second term in 2014. But she has been in suspension since May 2016 after the Senate voted to go ahead with the impeachment process. She was accused of moving funds between government budgets, which is illegal under Brazilian law. Her critics said she was trying to plug deficit holes in popular social programmes to boost her chances of being re-elected in 2014. Ms Rousseff fought the allegations, arguing that her right-wing rivals had been trying to remove her from office ever since her re-election. She said that she was being ousted because she had allowed a wide-ranging corruption investigation to go ahead, which resulted in many high-profile politicians being charged. But senators who voted in favour of her removal said it was Ms Rousseff and the Workers’ Party who were corrupt and needed to go. Mr Temer, who will govern until 1 January 2019, has promised to boost Brazil’s economy, which is going through its longest and deepest recession in the past quarter of a century. His critics have already warned that he plans to cut many of the popular social programmes introduced by the Workers’ Party.

WAR AGAINST TERROR: Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte (right) kisses a portrait of one of the 15 soldiers killed in a gun battle with Muslim Abu Sayyaf militants during his visit to the Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City, in southern Philippines, yesterday. At least 15 soldiers were killed in the Philippines in a clash between the army and militants from Abu Sayyaf, a supporter of the so-called Islamic State, in the south of the country, local media reported. The clash took place in Patikul, on Jolo Island, when a military patrol was attacked by about 120 heavily armed men, the chief of the Public Affairs Office of the Armed Forces, Edgard Arevalo said. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered government troops to destroy the Abu Sayyaf militants, after they beheaded an 18-year-old Filipino hostage, kidnapped last July in Jolo, a stronghold of Abu Sayyaf. Abu Sayyaf, founded in 1991 by a handful of veterans of the Afghan war against the Soviet Union, is responsible for some of the bloodiest attacks in the Philippines and numerous kidnappings through which the group funds its activities. Trump: I will deport illegal immigrants THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2016
US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has insisted Mexico will pay for a border wall “100%”, in a major immigration speech. He told a cheering crowd in Arizona that he would secure the border, and left open the possibility that millions of illegal immigrants be deported. Hours earlier, he met Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto but said they had not discussed financing the wall. The president later insisted he had told Mr Trump Mexico would not pay. There had been speculation that the Republican candidate would back off his plan to deport the estimated 11m undocumented immigrants living in the US. In his speech in Phoenix, there were conflicting signals about this. He said their fate was not a “core issue” and that deporting “criminal aliens” would be the priority. “We will treat everyone living or residing in our country with great dignity,” he said. But later he struck a more uncompromising note when he added: “Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation. That is what it means to have laws.” In a fiery speech that was at odds with his softer tone in Mexico City, he said he would create a “special deportation force” focused on removing immigrants arrested (not convicted) for crimes. He also vowed to cut off any path to citizenship and insisted those seeking legal status must return to their own countries first. Mr Trump also vowed to introduce “extreme vetting” of immigrants to make sure they adhered to American values and to protect the interests of African American and Hispanic workers by restricting legal
immigration numbers. In the same vein, he vowed to get tough on people who overstay their visas, making them subject to deportation. Mr Trump said it was the right of the US to choose immigrants that “we think are the likeliest to thrive and flourish and love us”. Elaborating on that idea, he said his “extreme vetting” would involve an ideological test for immigrants applying to live in the US. “Applicants will be asked for their views about honour killings, about respect for women and gays and minorities, attitudes on radical Islam,” he said. Mr Trump, a New York hotel developer, stormed to an unlikely victory in the Republican primaries partly due to his tough talking on immigration. And in Phoenix he vowed to protect the interests of Americans who he said lose out to new arrivals. “We have to listen to the concerns that working people, our forgotten working people, have over the record pace of immigration and its impact on their jobs, wages, housing, schools, tax bills and general living conditions,” he said. He accused his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton of wanting to grant amnesty to undocumented immigrants and of advocating “open border” policies. Reacting to Mr Trump’s visit to Mexico, she said he had “choked” by not asking his hosts to pay for his wall. Soon after his speech, Politico reported that Jacob Monty, one of Mr Trump’s 23-member National Hispanic Advisory Council, had quit the board, saying: “What I heard today was not realistic and not compassionate.” Another supporter, Alfonso Aguilar, President of the Latino Partnership

for Conservative Principles, also told Politico he may withdraw his backing, later tweeting that he felt “disappointed and misled”.
Mr Trump was not the only one to depart later in the day from the cordiality of the joint press conference in Mexico City. Amid an outcry that he
had invited such an unpopular figure to Mexico, President Pena Nieto said some of Mr Trump’s policies posed grave threats to his country.

CfC Stanbic calls on banking sector to boost transparency CfC Stanbic Bank, a corporate and retail lender licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), has officially announced its support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s recent move to lower interest rates within the sector. The bank has since called on other lenders to promote transparency within the lending sector for the benefit of both consumers and the economy at large. “His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the Banking (Amendment) Bill 2015 on 24th August 2016 aimed at regulating interest rates that are applicable to banks’ loans and deposits, capping the interest rates that banks can charge on loans and must pay on deposits,” CfC Stanbic Bank Chief Executive Philip Odera said in a statement. “We welcome the spirit of the decision as it is aligned to the Kenya banking sector’s continued commitment to address the fundamental issues that drive up the cost of credit,” he added. Odera noted that banking and affordable finance are central to Kenya’s economy and stakeholders must work together towards lowering the cost of credit in the country. “As a bank with a strong heritage in Kenya and on the continent with representation in 20 countries, our commitment to the people of Kenya in addressing the issue of lowering the cost of credit is steadfast and we would like to reiterate our promise of moving the people of Kenya In compliance with the new law, CfC has adopted the new lending rate of Base Rate + 400 basis points currently at 14.5 per cent per annum on all new and existing loan facilities.

Amref unveils mobile service targeting asthma patients Thousands of Asthma patients and hundreds of health workers in Kenya are set to benefit from a new mobilebased service from medical care provider, Amref Health Africa. Dubbed mHealth, the mobile-based solution is set to equip community health volunteers with timely information to tackle increasing cases of asthma across the country as well as help patients fight the disease. The announcements were made at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital during the launch of a broader campaign aimed at sensitizing the public on the need for awareness about asthma, its risk factors and the importance of understanding how to use inhalers among other related topics. The campaign, dubbed ‘Asthma Care Improvement Project’, was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of
Health, the Kenya Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (KAPTLD), among others and is funded by GlaxoSmithKline. Representing Amref Health Africa, Group CEO, Dr Lilian Mbau said the mHealth solution, called LEAP, will help community health volunteers receive basic initial training on health service delivery for asthmatic patients. “There are more mHealth solutions in Africa than anywhere else in the world,” she said. Adding: “Over 3,000 community health workers are already using the LEAP platform.” She noted that 275 health workers from Kilifi, Nairobi, Kakamega and Nyeri counties are expected to benefit saying that these are regions said to have high number of mobile phone penetration. In addition, 70 nurses, 79 pharmaceutical technicians, 37 clinical
officers, and 17 Community Health Extension Workers will benefit from the project. Asthma cases are prevalent in areas such as Nairobi where risk factors such as industrialisation and attendant air pollution are present. “Out of the estimated 1,000 patients we receive daily, we have 70 to 100 new cases of asthma,” said Dr Musa Mohammed, Medical Superintendent at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. This is indicative of a 7 to10 per cent prevalence rate across the city. Although asthma is not curable, it is manageable. Information about this treatment, including directions on how to use the inhaler is, however, scarce. “The best way to solve the challenge of asthma is to provide education about how to manage it, precisely how to use the inhalers,” said Dr Joseph Aluoch,
patron of the Kenya Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (KAPTLD). The cost of giving patients information on a one on one basis is too expensive, particularly for the government, which is still grappling with the double burden of communicable diseases and emerging non-communicable diseases such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension. LEAP will therefore help provide information affordably by allowing community health volunteers to leverage on technology to reach more patients. “Face to face interaction is an intensive and expensive methodology. This is where Amref Health Africa comes in,” said GSK Managing Director, Bridget Wachira. @enock_x254

Kenya ranked 3rd best conferencing destination in Africa
Kenya has been ranked as the 3rd best conferencing destination in Africa, Najib Balala, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism has said. The country held the 2nd spot last year based on a report by International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). The analysis found that Kenya held 38 international conferences in 2013, becoming the second most popular conference destination in Africa and 58th globally. At the time South Africa led in Africa and 34 worldwide, with 118 conferences. SA still holds the top spot with Nigeria and Kenya locked in a seemingly constant battle for the second position. Speaking early today at State house Mombasa during the State House Summit dubbed ‘Transforming Tourism,’ Balala said that sometimes people take things the Government has done for granted. “Kenya will be the gateway for investors from Japan. The last time we had a big conference such as TICAD VI was in 1981. Where have we been all this time?” the CS implored. His sentiments follow a series of high-profile conferences that Kenya has held in recent months such as The United Nations Conference on Trade And Development (UNCTAD), World Trade Organisation (WTO), the sixth Tokyo International Conference of Africa’s Development and many more. Balala added that Kenya has so far achieved more from the last concluded conferences. “In the recent concluded TICAD VI, $32 billion (Sh3.2 trillion) was pledged, 73 memoranda of understanding signed and Sh12 billion pumped in the economy,” said Balala. The CS added that 672 arrivals have been recorded between January and June through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) a decline from one million in 2011. Balala added that 1,880 cruise ship arrivals were recorded this year. “There is so much potential in the African market. Let us invest in this market,” Balala said. He noted that as a country, both the private sector and the government need to think big and seriously invest in Bomas of Kenya to attract more conference tourism. @Lenah_x254

Domestic tourism helps sector record Sh47Bn profit in H1 of 2016 The tourism sector made Sh47 billion in the first six months of 2016 with projections of hitting the Sh100 billion mark by the end of the year. Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala says that the growth represents a 14 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Balala explained that the jump was mainly driven by domestic tourism ,which grew by 56 per cent compared to a similar period in 2015. “Despite the fact that we normally take domestic tourism for granted, domestic tourism was the best performing, with a 56 per cent increase in the period under review compared to the same period last year, said CS Balala. “We have started investing much more all of us, both government and the private sector by being innovative to ensure that we achieve our set target of Sh 100 billion before the year ends,” he added. During the period under review, arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) grew by 13.3 per cent whereas Mombasa Airport arrivals grew by 13.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. Furthermore, there was a 3 per cent increase in cross border tourism, though the CS noted that it is not growing as fast as it should be. “Cross border tourism is not growing according to our expectations. We have started investigations to determine why its growing that slow,” the Balala said. Data from the Tourism Ministry reveals that in 2015, earnings went down by 2.9 per cent to Sh84.6 billion from Sh87.1 billion in 2014, attributable to travel advisories from key tourism markets for the country, resulting from insecurity issues.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala (Centre) and Tourism Principal Secretary Fatuma Hirsi at yesterday’s State House Summit. International arrivals went down by 12.6 per cent in 2015 from 1.35 million in 2014 to 1.18 million in 2015. In the first quarter of 2016, tourism was the most-improved sector, expanding by 12.1 per cent in the period under review, compared to a contraction of
11.4 per cent during the same quarter in 2015. The number of tourist arrivals at major airports increased from 231,038 in the first quarter of 2015 to 261,404 in the quarter under review attributable to mitigation measures that were
instituted to boost tourist arrivals. Balala highlighted conference tourism, innovation and tourism promotion as the key pillars that will support the sector going forward. @enock_x254

The rest of the Sub-Saharan region has an average grid access rate of just 25 per cent, resulting in isolated communities with limited access to education and connectivity – both of which are key to fast-tracking a nation’s development. “At Samsung, we are keen to support societies and their communities in many different ways and these Solutions will provide better knowledge transfer, learning and research opportunities both for learners and teachers alike, as well as equip them with the necessary employable skills for the future,” says Abey Tau; Public Affairs and Corporate Citizenship Manager of Samsung Electronics Africa Office. The SPIS is built in a 12-metre repurposed container that can accommodate up to 24 pupils, and is fitted with solar panels that power the equipment. It is additionally equipped with an interactive whiteboard, Samsung Laptops, a printer, and fans to cool the container. The Samsung E-Learning Centre initiative is an integrated platform that boasts of a monitoring and controlling feature which allows teachers to keep constant track of educational content on their learners’ screens. The screens includes screen-sharing feature, as well as real-time question and answer feature. The Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon John Chrysestom Muyingo, who was the chief guest at Mackay College, emphasized that, “the Samsung solutions provide a holistic approach aimed at fast-tracking educational development and ensuring that the youth can participate on a global scale by exposing them to today’s innovative technology.” To date, Samsung Electronics Africa has rolled out SPIS and E-Learning Centres solutions in countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Gabon, Botswana, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa @kevin_x254

Turkish construction firm to build lowcost Nairobi houses in Sh425Bn deal THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2016
Vefa Holdings, a Turkish construction firm, is set to build more than 2,000 low-cost houses in Nairobi in a deal valued at $4.2 billion (Sh425 billion). The firm is set to draw an agreement with Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia counties to build the houses using prefabricated construction materials. The housing projects are both public and private investments. Vefa offers solutions for prefabricated buildings, living containers, galvanized lightweight steel constructions, structural steel buildings, practical prefabricated houses,
ecological structures, modular system constructions, cabins and furniture, among others. The company’s move to branch into the Kenyan market is in line with its ongoing strategy to expand to new regions across the globe. Vefa Holding, said in a statement that the firm plans to “enter into partnerships with local companies in some countries in order to increase its strength in foreign markets, is aiming to export to more than 100 countries this year.” Vefa plans to become the leading player in its field by the year 2020.

Vefa, which last year exported 70 per cent of its products overseas, plans increase that figure to 75 per cent in 2016. Having exported its products and srvices to 81 countries thus far, Vefa is planning to increase that number to more than 100 this year. Turan Koçyiğit, Chairman of Vefa Holding’s Executive Board, stated that the construction company aims to become the “most preferred, biggest and leading player of the sector in 2020 by offering innovative and differentiated products to its customers in global markets and different cultures through sustainable

business models.” The Chairman added that Vefa is also rebuilding itsorganizational structure as of this year. “We are revising our yearly and five-year strategic plans. Our goal is to realize by the entered of the year the 30 percent increase in turnover we determined as part of our planning,” Koçyiğit explained. Koçyiğit said that Vefa’s priority target this year is to continue growing in foreign markets. “We will try to achieve that growth by giving out dealerships in countries we target and through establishing partnerships with local

companies in some countries”, he noted. The company will particularly focus on Malaysia, Indonesia and India in the Asia-Pacific region as well as the American continent and Gulf countries. Countries that did business for the first time with Vefa holdings in the previous year include the Maldives, Rwanda, Malaysia, Egypt, Saint Kitts and Saint Martin. Koçyiğit noted that in 2015 alone, Vefa Holdings sent out products to 34 different countries. Koçyiğit, noted in an previous address that the company has made partnerships with big local companies in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and opened a showroom in Georgia. “We can export and compete in the market. However, in order to take that further, and arrive at a position to carry out production in at least 10 countries simultaneously, we are targeting to export know-how. Our primary markets in this area are Algeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and India,” the Chairman said. Earlier this year, ahead of its move to branch into the Kenyan market, Vefa gathered its energy in pre-production subsidiaries under one roof, Vefa Prefabrike Yapılar San. “Gathering all its companies in pre-production structures under one roof, Vefa will now operate as a single power in this field,” Koçyiğit said in a statement issued earlier this year. “We target a 50 per cent increase in turnover,” Koçyiğit said. “We are trying to complete our new structuring in all of our companies in 2016. We are revising our annual and five-year strategic plans. These plans contain business models and solutions specific to the conditions of each country we target. Our target is having a total 50 per cent increase in turnover at the end of the year pursuant to the plans we have made,” he added. The Vefa CEO emphasized that the firm had focused on staff optimization and increasing efficiency in holding and preproduction structures given the company’s new organizational structure, “We have combined our energy by gathering our pre-production structures group under one roof. We have preserved our brand and increased the number of our companies. Optimizing our operational costs, we have started a title structuring that is suitable for
our structure and size. Thanks to the new departments and functions we have added to the organization, especially such as project management, we have connected all steps in the business flow. Establishing a corporate development unit within the holding, we have targeted a better sustainable organizational structure and business flow,” he said. Vefa’s move to set up shop in Nairobi comes just as the latest report from real estate experts HassConsult reveals that though 2016 has set new highs as property returns march ahead of land in Nairobi, landlords may have to adjust their projections to meet the needs of new tenants. It has found that overall, asking prices for rents plateaued at 1.5 per cent during the previous quarter after showing a bit of marginal growth since the fall in rental prices in November 2015. “Growth in property prices in 2016 rallied ahead of land in the city for the first time in 9 years, a phenomenon which has continued to the end of the second quarter,” stated the report. House price gains were strong, despite the slowdown in economic growth, with asking prices up 4.0 per cent on previous quarter. Meanwhile, the data, released in late July found that detached houses recorded the highest increase in houses prices at 5.2 per cent in the last three months, followed by apartments at 3.6 per cent and Semidetached houses at 0.7 per cent. Detached houses also recorded the highest increases in rental prices at 2.2 per cent followed by apartments at 1.4 per cent while semi-detached houses did not record any changes in asking rental prices in the quarter. The soaring property appreciation is a testament that investors are finding the current prices of land unsustainable in the short term. “With average price for land now at Sh178million per acre, investors are now opting to buy property which they can rent out in the short term and sell in the long term. Most investors are opting to buy properties which are easier to offload than an acre whose high price makes it harder to find immediate buyer,” said Ms. Sakina Hassanali, the Head of Marketing and Research at HassConsult. @Dennis_x254

THE WOMAN INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT, WHO HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A MODEL AND ACTRESS POSTED A REACTION TO THE NAYSAYERS ON INSTAGRAM.
A
s Chris Brown mentioned in the Instagram video he posted while all the commotion at his home was taking place, apparently every three months we get to fix some new scandal and involve him in it. The singer was involved in an hours-long standoff with local police after they received a call from the property from a woman named Baylee Curran claiming Brown threatened her with a firearm. This happened after an argument involving jewelry came about. Instead of addressing the cops and ending the issue before it turned into an international incident, Chris Brown chose to stay holed up in house, get inebriated and intoxicated with whichever drugs were allegedly in his possession and fall asleep. An entire SWAT team was called onto his Tarzana, Los Angeles, mansion causing commotion and disturbing his other famous neighbours. Basketball player Nick Young, who lives in the same neighbourhood as Brown, put up a video of his own stating that the singer was making ‘the block hot.’ The woman involved in the incident, who has been identified as a model and actress posted a reaction to the naysayers on Instagram. “Do you all honestly think I wanted this and I caused this? If somebody put a gun to your head, what would you? Call the police?” Whatever the case Brown was eventually arrested, with the AP reporting that he was taken into police custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Despite his lengthy criminal record celebrities have for some reason come out to support him. From rapper 50 Cent to actress Keke Palmer, Chris Brown has apparently made some friends over the years. Beauty behind bars is Miss Langata Prisons 2016

uth Wanjiru Kamande is the newly crowned Miss Langata Prisons. Wanjiru beat 19 other contestants at the pageant which was held in the spirit of rehabilitation of female prisoners at the institution. Wanjiru is in remand as a case against her on charges of murder and attempted suicide continues in court. She is accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death and turning the knife on herself. Graced by Kaka empire signed singer Avril, the beauty contest saw the inmates bring in their A Game in a stunning show of beauty and brains behind bars. RUTH KAMANDE
tweeted “Prayin for ya @chrisbrown we need ya.” If Chris Brown wasn’t a famous person then he would probably have served actual time for the crimes that he has committed. In 2013 he assaulted a man in Washington D.C. and later had to go to rehab. After discussing his skill with weapons in jail, he was sentenced to an extra month at the facility. We also can’t forget the 2009 assault on Rihanna that seemed to mark the beginning of his downward spiral. When it was revealed that the singer had fathered a child early last year it was an indication that maybe Chris Brown was trying to turn his life around, but that might have only been a lull on his path to self-destruction. Because Brown’s 2-year old daughter, Royalty, may have been at his home while all the hullabaloo was taking place. Whether or not Curran is making the story up one thing is certain, the wildly talented Brown needs surround himself with better people. @christine_x254

2016 VMAS: MOST BIZARRE LOOKS
AND THEN THERE WERE THESE…
In the world of fashion, a thin line lies between fine dressing and poor dressing, and a thinner line lies between poor dressing and whack dressing. While we understand that the reason why most celebs turn up badly dressed for red carpets is because they try too hard to impress, there is no explanation for exaggerated outfits, such as a few which we spotted at the VMAs last weekend. They really made us question the sanity of some celebrities.
TOP BAGGY JEANS
90S TRENDS THAT SHOULD NEVER RETURN
W
as there a surplus of denim material in the 90s? The size and length of these jeans were enough to fashion two other pairs from a single one. They must have been a revolt from the tootight clothing of the 80s but were still very un-fashionable in their own way. Oversize jeans should remain as one of those trends we just look back on fondly and reminisce on but never bring back.
T
TUBE TOPS
he strange thing about these tops is that like boybands they have a cyclical popularity. They come back after every 20 years. They seem to be having a moment with the re-emergence of crop tops but hopefully they will go away soon. These horribly impractical and flesh-baring outerwear can only be used as a scarf or some sort of headgear because they definitely were not made of enough material to cover anything.
PLATFORM SNEAKERS
T
his other unfortunate trend, inspired by the 70s love for chunky platform heels, were ugly and impossible to walk in. They are also enjoying some renewed popularity among the fashion-forward youth. This shoe doesn’t seem to have the ability to decide whether it wants to be a sneaker or a pump, so it rests on the hideous hybrid of both. It’s also hard to imagine exactly what occasion these shoes would be considered appropriate wear.

Kenya will host CHAN 2018, FKF insists F ootball Kenya Federation boss Nick Mwendwa has insisted hosting rights for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) remains with Kenya, despite reports that the country may not be ready for the biennial showpiece. Confederation of African Football boss Issa Hayatou was in the country late last week accompanied by his vice president Almamy Kabele Camara as well as Secretary General Hicham El Amrani and had progress meetings with the FKF leadership and Deputy President William Ruto. “There were fruitful meetings with us and the Deputy President just to let CAF know that we are on top of things. They did not raise any concerns because they just wanted the progress we are making. Everything is on course,” Mwendwa said. “I’m set to have a meeting in Cairo late September to have a presentation on what we are doing as a federation and possibly by then we will have a clearer road map to everything.” The CAF delegation was set to have a press briefing after their two day tour but cancelled, raising speculation as to whether or not Kenya will still be able to hold the championship especially with the state of the stadia. But a source within CAF said the meeting between the CAF delegation and Ruto more sealed Kenya’s chances of hosting the tournament. “The most important thing for CAF is getting government assurance. When Mr. Hayatou met with the Kenyan VP he was assured of the government’s commitment. That was all needed then. I don’t think it is true Kenya will not host the tournament.” The CAF Source said. Meanwhile, FKF is working to seal venues which are going to host the tournament. CAF requirements dictate that four stadia should be made available each with a training ground adjacent. All the venues should have at least four changing rooms, a media tribune, anti-doping test room, referees’ room among other amenities. Currently, only Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia meet the most basic of requirements while Eldoret, Meru, Machakos and Mombasa are other counties which are chasing to have a bite of the cherry. @amos_x254

Kelekwa upbeat Sofapaka will not be relegated
President Elly Kalekwa remains confident the club will not be relegated from the Kenyan Premier League despite sitting second from bottom of the log on 15 points with only eight matches to go. Sofapaka, the 2009 Kenyan Premier League Champions, have found the going tough this season after losing their entire squad in December last year due to financial constraints. “Truth be told, we did not start well. We cannot hide from that fact. We have found ourselves in a position on the table where we have never been and it is tough. But I remain confident we can make it. I’m now fully back with the team and we are working as a unit to achieve that target,” Kalekwa told Capital Sport. Sofapaka played with a hugely inexperienced squad in the first leg, owing to their inability to attract top names due to their negative balance sheet. In the second leg though, head coach David Ouma went for a more experienced squad, most of who have played for some of the top teams in the league. Kalekwa, who has been conspicuously missing from the team for the past one year, says he is back for the long haul and has steadied the ship, pulling strings from his own purse. “Right now, I’m trying with my own resources to see that the team is stable and the players don’t lack salaries even for a month. They are motivated and
at least we have good players who are experienced and know what it takes to play in the Premier League,” Kalekwa added. With eight matches left, Sofapaka will hope 14th placed Ushuru drop points in at least three matches for them to catch up, something that looks more of a mountainous task with matches against AFC Leopards, champions Gor Mahia, Ulinzi Stars and Mathare United being on their season ending menu. “Some people don’t believe that we can do it. But on my side, I have the faith. We will remain in the league,” The Congolese business man assured. Ouma carries the same faith and told Capital that they will treat all their remaining matches like finals and give their all. “We have quality players who are giving 100 percent effort in every game and maintaining tactical discipline.” But even in the event that Batoto ba Mungu fail to hold on to their last straw of hope to remain in top flight football, Kalekwa says he will not close down his wallet on the team. “That is where we started as Sofapaka even without a sponsor and came on to make history in Kenyan football. Sofapaka will not die even if we go back to the second tier League. I still have a lot in store with this team,” he stated. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

Emotional Schwein plays his last Germany match
An emotional Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has played his final international game. He was in tears at a presentation before Germany’s 2-0 friendly win over Finland in Monchengladbach. The Manchester United midfielder, 32, made his Germany debut in June 2004 and ends his international career with 121 caps and 24 goals. “It means so much that you’re here today. It has been an honour to play for you,” he told the crowd. “I think you all saw how it affected me. I had just wanted to enjoy every moment, but I hadn’t expected it to be so lovely.” Schweinsteiger, who was substituted to a standing ovation after 66 minutes, holds the German record for European Championship appearances, having played 18 times at the tournament. He was part of Germany’s 2014 World Cupwinning squad and retires as Germany’s fourth most-capped player of all time. Schweinsteiger, who this week denied he had a problem with new United manager Jose Mourinho, said he wanted to play for the Reds again despite being left out of their first-team squad. “I have a contract with United until 2018 and it’s my dream to run out there again,” he added. “I love football still too much and that means being on the field, playing, and that is what I am thinking about.”
Sacked AFC Leopards coach Minnaert threatens to sue THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2016
Embattled coach Ivan Minnaert has finally been sacked by AFC Leopards after a disastrous Premier League campaign as the new club leadership led by Chairman Dan Mule called time on the Belgian’s spell with the Kenyan Club. The elevation of his assistant Ezekiel Akwana to the post of head coach making him the 17th coach to guide the club which has had the highest turnover of coaches both local and foreign in the Kenyan Premier league since 2009. Moments after the axe was unleashed the coach who was hired in March said he will be seeking legal counsel from his lawyer following the club terminating his contract with 16 months “I don’t think it’s justifiable because I’m achieving my targets. The first one when I came in was to avoid relegation and we are well above the relegation zone. I was also to build a team for the future and if you look now we have almost four players being called up to the national team,” Minnaert, said. “I am consulting with my lawyer on the issue of termination and if need

be, we will take action,” he added. The decision, according to AFC Leopards chair, Mule was taken due
to the club’s poor run of form over the last four matches. “We had an executive meeting and
took the decision because the team was performing poorly. We have instructed Akwana to take charge of the team but by the end of the season, we will have identified a person to take over permanently,” Mule said. Mule disclosed that there is a clause in Minnaert’s contract indicating it can be terminated over poor performance. Leopards has suffered unconvincing results including a 4-1 drubbing by Kakamega Homeboyz and last week’s 3-0 loss at the hands of Western Stima who dumped them out of the GOtv Shield. Minnaert joined Ingwe from Rwandese side Rayon Sport, taking over from Dutchman Jan Koops who was redeployed as a technical director. But his stint has been rocky with a section of the AFC Leopards management against his hiring, most of them saying Koops should have held on. The inconsistent results the team has posted recently, following up on midseason transfer drama compounded Minnaert’s woes. @amos_x254

SUAREZ
MESSI
Messi to face Suarez as Argentina, Uruguay clash B arcelona ace Lionel Messi will play for Argentina today against Uruguay when the two countries clash in World Cup Qualifying match tonight. Messi had remained a doubt for what could be his first match since returning to international football last month following his announcement to quit duty with Argentina in June. But Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza insists the forward is fit and ready to face Uruguay. A hamstring injury was believed to be troubling the Barcelona superstar, who is with the squad for two qualifiers. But, ahead of his first game in charge, Bauza said Messi had trained and was fit for the clash in Mendoza. “Messi is good. So I see no problems,” he told a news conference. “It’s going to be an intense game and he’ll be required.” Bauza said he would be unwilling to risk Messi if the 29-year-old showed signs of discomfort. The coach is confident his team can produce their best in their first outing since their Copa America Centenario final loss in June. “I have much trust in the team,” Bauza said adding: “I think we can make a good game and win it.” While Argentina will miss the services of key players like Sergio Aguero and Javier Pastore, Uruguay have their big names fit with Luis Suarez and Diego Godin back. They also top the standings jointly with Ecuador on 13 points. While Messi and Co.s opponents are in good forming going into the clash, goalkeeper Fernando Muslera still expects a difficult match. “For us, to play against a player like Messi is beautiful,” Galatasaray’s Muslera
told reporters at Montevideo airport, before giving a nod towards Uruguay’s own formidable attacking talent. “To share the pitch with players like Messi, but not only him – Luis [Suarez] too, Edi [Cavani] are top players. “It is nice, very enjoyable and also makes the match more exciting,” he added. While Bauza faces a difficult start to his reign against the in-form Uruguayans, Brazil have a potentially awkward trip to the thin air of Quito to face Ecuador. Although the Brazilians have an impressive overall record against Ecuador, winning 24 of 30 games since 1942, the Selecao have never won a World Cup qualifier in Quito, which is situated a dizzying 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. New Brazil coach Tite, appointed in June, has drawn heavily on Brazil’s victorious Olympic squad for today’s game against Ecuador, which is followed by a challenging date with Colombia in Manaus next week. Barcelona superstar Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel “Gabigol” Barbosa and four other members of the Olympic squad are in the 23 for two games. Former Corinthians boss Tite warned Brazil, who are outside the automatic qualification positions after winning just two of their first six games, that they could not afford to assume they would turn their campaign around. Brazil has never failed to qualify for a World Cup. “We’re not in the qualification zone,” Tite said. “Of course there’s a risk, if we don’t accept to see the risk, we’re fleeing reality.
