At least 2,300 doctors have quit, gone abroad since strike began A total of 2,300 doctors have quit working in public hospitals and others gone abroad for greener pastures since the ongoing strike began 66 days ago.

Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Ouma Oluga disclosed to senators that the medics have been forced to quit by deep rooted tribalism and unfair treatment at the counties.

According to the unionist, doctors are unfairly treated at the counties with some denied opportunities to go abroad for further studies.

The unfair treatment according to Oluga has made majority of doctors to seek for greener pastures abroad a situation he described as sad.

Chickengate: Oswago arrested and released WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2017

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive James Oswago was today arrested and arraigned in court in connection to the Chickengate scandal.

Mr Oswago was picked from his home by Ethics and Anti-Corruption detectives. He was arrested alongside Trevy Oyombra and Hamida Ali Kibwana. Mr Oyombra is accused of having masterminded the scandal.

But the trio were released on a Sh1 million bond each, after being arraigned in court.

Mr Oswago and Oyombra were asked to pay an alternative cash bail of Sh600,000 each while Hamida Ali Kibwana was given a cash bail of Sh1 million with an alternative bond of Sh1.5 million.

They all denied accusations that they infringed procurement laws by awarding a printing contract for 570,000 ballot papers to UK-based firm, Smith and Ouzman.

They are accused of corruption in printing contracts for materials for the last General Election in 2013, where prices were inflated by huge amounts for kick-backs.

The anti-graft body had exonerated former IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan from corruption allegations in the Chickengate scandal.

A British government report sent to Attorney-General Prof Githu Muigai had named commissioners and tender committee members who allegedly received money from Smith and

Ouzman to help the firm win the ballot paper printing tender.

The documents filed in the UK paint Oswago as having worked closely with Oyombra to inflate prices.

But Mr Oswago has maintained his innocence, claiming that he did not receive any money from Smith & Ouzman printing firm to influence

award of tenders.

“I can tell you that there is no investigation in this. Take it from me that there is no investigation at all in this. A chief executive officer cannot be responsible for all the ills of society,” an angry Mr Oswago said as detectives forced him into a car at Integrity Center.

According to the UK investigators,

Oyombra was a central player in delivering ‘chicken’ to the other accused by virtue of being S&O’s agent in Kenya.

Last year, Oswago threatened to sue Trevy Oyombra for implicating him in the saga.

The anti-graft body has been accused of unnecessarily delaying the investigations and prosecution of the matter even as some of those involved sit pretty in various public offices.

So far, the EACC has also grilled 16 junior officers from the secretariat, including some who had left the commission to join other state agencies.

Mr Nicholas Charles Smith, 43, who was Smith & Ouzman Ltd sales and marketing director, was jailed for three years by a British Court for bribing IIEC and Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) officials to win printing contracts.

A body representing Kenyans living abroad has threatened to take legal action against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for limiting voting in the August General Elections to just five countries outside Kenya.

The Kenya Diaspora Alliance (KDA) has said it will sue the electoral agency for failing to comply with a court ruling that protected the diaspora’s right to vote for all elective positions in an election.

KDA Chairperson Shem Ochuodho (pictured) said the contempt of court witnessed on IEBC’s part was enough to challenge them in court to ensure observance of the directive.

“KDA and the diaspora are contemplating heading back to court for contempt by the IEBC,” he said.

“No diaspora voter registration has been done with no explanation given as to why this is the case,” added the former Rangwe MP. He further noted that they deserved a say in Kenya’s electoral discourse as Kenyans working abroad sent home a record Sh14.6 billion as of May 2016.

A study commissioned by the diaspora group showed over 80% of Kenyans in the diaspora preferred the electronic means of voting.

IEBC yesterday said it would limit voting outside the country to be conducted in the East African states of Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda with the addition of South Africa.

Kenyans residing in the Southern Africa region will be able to register as voters and cast their ballot in Pretoria.

However they will only be able to vote for the president.

Agency commissioner Roselyn Kwamboka said that IEBC did not have adequate mechanisms to conduct elections in all countries in which abroad Kenyans reside for the August polls.

“We do not believe we are ready to expand outside the five countries that we have outlined considering numerous legal requirements, memoranda of understanding and custom clearances required,” she said.

The commissioner however assured that the electoral body would be ready to accommodate them in the 2022 General Election.

“We want to give assurance that this is something we will pick up and run with it when the time comes,” she said.

The Supreme Court in 2015 ruled unanimously that every Kenyan, including those with dual citizenship, should be granted the opportunity to vote.

The court last week upheld a decision by the Court of Appeal, which ordered IEBC to set up voter registration centres in foreign countries.

For IEBC to set up a polling station in a foreign country, there must be at least 3,000 Kenyan citizens in that particular country As of 2013, the official number of Kenyans in the diaspora registered with the various Kenyan embassies stood at 130,000.

Mogadishu put on lockdown as Somalia elects president A traffic ban has been imposed and major roads sealed off in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, ahead of a presidential vote.

MPs will gather at the airport to elect a new head of state.

Last evening, suspected al-Shabab militants launched a series of attacks, with two mortar rounds fired close to the venue where the vote will be held.

Residents in Arbacow village outside Mogadishu say jihadists attacked an African Union military base there.

More than 20 candidates are vying to become Somali president, with the top three proceeding to a second round of voting and the top two from that round going forward to a third and final vote.

Incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is standing for re-election and analysts say he is likely to be one of those who goes forward to the later rounds.

Results are expected later on Wednesday.

The airport is viewed as the most secure site in the Somali capital and voting was moved there from a police academy because of growing security concerns.

An elite unit of soldiers in Ivory Coast has mutinied, firing into the air at their base in the southeastern town Adiake, near the border with Ghana.

Residents have stayed indoors and shops and schools have closed.

The Ivorian special forces, who report directly to the president’s office, have accused their commanders of stealing part of their salaries.

It comes a month after regular soldiers staged a mutiny over pay and conditions.

“Gunfire began earlier in the special forces’ camp and then the town began panicking as armed soldiers left the barracks,” a high school teacher told the Reuters news agency. Correspondents in the capital Abidjan say the special forces number up to 800, are rarely seen in public and are considered loyal to the government.

A delegation from the chief of staff ’s office has flown by helicopter to the base to negotiate with the commandos, they say.

Local media reports one soldier as saying that he has received only $80 (£64) of his $400 monthly salary.

Adiake is home to a maritime base that trains commandos and provides coastal surveillance.

Last month, the government agreed to the demands of the other mutinous soldiers, some of whom were former rebels who backed President Alassane Ouattara.

But the payout has angered other segments of the military, raising fears of a resurgence of the violence seen during Ivory Coast’s 10-year civil war, which ended in 2011.

Banks to face 10 million cyber attacks in 2017, experts warn Lending institutions embracing technology at exponential rates are at risk of cyber-attacks which could hurt their businesses in the long run over what experts have called weak control measures.

A new report by financial services firm Deloitte dubbed ‘Technology, Media and Telecommunications Predictions 2017’ has ranked Kenya among the worst countries in dealing with cybercrime.

The report comes after Kenya was ranked position 69 out of 127 countries in an analysis dubbed the ‘Global Threat Index’, down from position 45 in 2015, making the country one of the most vulnerable to cyber-related attacks.

“As the pace of technological change becomes exponentially faster, it is increasingly difficult to identify the major trends that could have profound effects on enterprises and consumers,’’ read the report in part.

The report projects that there will be as high as 10 million cases of cyberattacks in 2017 and they will be harder to mitigate.

The study attributes the projected increase in cyber-crime to growing installation of insecure Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the online availability of malware methodologies and the availability of ever higher bandwidth speed.

New data shows that Kenya lost Sh17.4 billion to cyber crime in 2016 alone.

Experts project that the figure will skyrocket in 2017 should the state not

dissatisfaction over the way lending institutions are embracing technology.

“It is so disappointing to see a majority of Kenyan companies invest less than half a million in infrastructure to picket against cyber-crimes,” he said.

The call comes at a time when banks and media companies have embarked on a massive layoff campaign claiming that they want to focus on technology to cut costs and improve customer

Ministry partners with Transport Authority to support tour operators

The Ministry of Tourism has partnered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in a bid to support the sector, which is currently on the road to recovery.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala this week hosted National Transport and Safety Authority Director-General Francis Meja in his office in Nairobi.

The two discussed how to resolve issues affecting tour operators, especially tour drivers in the industry.

They resolved to come up with regulations to upgrade the current refurbished tour vans into specialized ones within the next three years.

The tourism sector recorded the highest number of arrivals ever at roughly 1.3 million tourists as at December 31, 2011. This was a

15.4 per cent growth compared to tourist arrivals in 2010.

During this period the sector earned Sh97.9 billion, a significant increase of 32.9 per cent compared to the Sh73.7 billion from 2010.

At the time, the United Kingdom was leading in terms of arrivals with 203,290 followed

by United States 119,615 while Italy and Germany took third and fourth position at 96,360 and 68,737. India took the fifth position with 58,986 visitors.

Kenya’s Tourism Ministry has been working to get these numbers up in recent months.

The number of tourists to Kenya grew by 16.1 per cent in 2016 with tourists from the United States for the first time surpassing visitors from the UK. The American market grew by 16.4 percent compared to a 4 per cent decline in tourists from the UK. This is according to a new survey by consumer goods manufacturer, Procter & Gamble.

In its report, the company says that Kenya’s retail sector grew by 13 per cent lifted by a rising consumer trend of bulk buying.

P&G Managing Director Vivek Sunder noted that supermarkets are quickly becoming the preferred channel as more outlets open in residential areas, contributing to the segment’s 18 percent growth.

“Proximity to consumers is one of the big drivers for supermarkets. The local store as a channel is gaining importance within the retail space,” he said.

A total of 470,000 square meters of land are occupied by malls and proposed shopping complexes. This makes Kenya a distance second to South Africa that leads with 3.5 million square meters.

This indicates that Kenya’s retail is growing faster than the economy.

Although certain retail chains struggled over the period, this was countered by the mushrooming of small and medium outlets in residential areas, Anthony Ng’ang’a, Brand and Commercial Operations at Procter & Gamble explained. Traditional retail still dominates the markets. According to Sunder, traditional trade will continue to be the dominant despite declining in importance.

Rwandan government to sell 20pc stake in I&M Bank on Valentine’s Day The Rwandan government plans to sell its 20 per cent stake in I&M Bank operations in Rwanda next week, with the aim of raising 11.5 billion francs (Sh1.2 trillion), senior officials have confirmed.

The initial public offering (IPO) would be launched on February 14 and the proceeds would be used to help finance a new airport at Bugesera, east of the capital Kigali, the officials said.

“The money will be invested as initial equity in the Bugesera Airport,” Rwandan Finance Minister Claver Gatete told Rwanda’s Parliament, saying the aim was to raise 11.5 billion francs.

On his part, Managing Director of I&M Bank in Rwanda, Robin Bairstow said the IPO launch date was Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

I&M Bank in Rwanda is part of the Kenyan group I&M Holdings . The listing would boost the Rwandan bourse, where the total market capitalisation of the seven listed firms rose to $4.1 billion in 2015 but has since fallen to $3.4 billion (Sh352.8 billion).

The announcement comes barely two months after I&M Bank Kenya said it had set aside Sh300 million

to empower communities around the country.

Executive Director Sarit Shah said the bank plans to reach out to under-privileged members of society in three social pillars of health, education and environment. “Each year, I&M Bank sets aside two per cent of its pre-tax profits, which is kept under a fund to support various social initiatives in the areas of health, education and environment,” said Mr Shah.

He was speaking in November, 2016 during the launch of a two-day free medical camp at St Martins Kibagare Primary School in Loresho.

He said in addition to the health initiative, the bank is putting up St Ann’s Suresh Raja Shah Girls Secondary School, Kairi, at a cost of Sh200 million.

The bank has also set aside Sh4.5 million and Sh3.5 million for environment and health initiatives respectively.

The Rwandan deal also comes just as Kenya’s banking sector has seen its banking sector acquisition deals reach a value of about Sh23.3 billion in the last three years.

Drought Management Authority projects hike in food prices WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2017

Low income Kenyans are set to dig deeper into their pockets after the Kenya Drought Management Authority (KMDA) said food prices would rise higher than they already have.

KMDA says the projected hike in basic food prices is as a result of reduced cereal imports from neighbouring countries as well as an ongoing drought that has rocked the country since the last quarter of 2016.

According to latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), current food prices have gone up as high as 25 per cent - the highest in over half a decade - and are projected to continue rising.

A hike in food prices saw January inflation rise by 0.64 standing at 6.99 up from 6.35 per cent in December 2016.

KDMA reveals that maize flour prices in urban markets have skyrocketed by over 12 per cent since the last quarter of 2016. For instance, the price of a two-kilogram packet of maize flour increased to Sh 120 last month from Sh115 it retailed in December 2016.

“Given the low supply, retail maize prices in these markets are expected to increase through 2017,” the Authority said in a statement.

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) recently revealed that farmers in maize producing regions are reluctant to release cereals, arguing that market prices are too low, a move that is further worsening the situation.

IDRC offers local organisations Sh78 million in funding to support effective livestock vaccinations

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is seeking proposals for its Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF) with an aim to support novel ideas or preexisting innovations to respond to the challenges of existing livestock vaccines in sub-Saharan Africa.

The call seeks proposals that are adopting innovative approaches to increasing the duration of immunity by reducing the number of primary vaccinations; improving overall vaccine safety; and developing universal vaccines with the capacity to provide protection against multiple strains of livestock diseases. IDRC said in a statement that a maximum of 6 research projects will get grants, up to a maximum of CA$ 1 million (Sh78.8 million) each for up to 30 months.

The call comes about two weeks after Kenya’s government launched a new foot and mouth vaccine.

Livestock Principal Secretary, Andrew Tuimur said in January that the vaccine is cheaper than the one currently being used, and will only be administered once a year per animal rather than three times a year. He was speaking during the launch of the vaccine at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation headquarters in Nairobi.

The WMS, Shah said, will provide the retailer with a much-needed supply chain transformation solution and platform to support growth.

With the WMS Integration, Nakumatt has already started to enjoy significant operational cost savings, with the average dispatch values almost doubling within its existing space.

“At its optimum performance level and with added features including an auto replenish system, we hope to enjoy maximum savings on our average dispatch value per day while managing shrinkage risk more effectively,” Shah said. “This world-class system provides us with a clear dash board to track our stocks from supplier delivery to customer pick up on the shelves allowing for proper business planning.”

At the next phase of the integration project, Nakumatt Holdings, has set its focus on the delivery of an auto replenish system; which will easily, place the retailer on a top pedestal as an Information Technology reliant chain.

“This helps the organization to significantly raise its operational efficiencies and reduce stock out incidences at all our 64 branches and Central Warehouses across the region, for the customers benefit,” Shah added.

The installation of the online WMS, has also seen a massive skills transfer at Nakumatt, with more than 800 staff members now undergoing specialized user training.

As part of the project rollout

milestones, staff at Nakumatt’s central warehouses, have managed to cut their official working days to six from seven, while significantly raising the firm’s stock inventory accuracy.

“With the installation of the WMS, Nakumatt Central Warehouse staffers in Nairobi, have for the first time in more than 20 years successfully managed to process more than 5billion shipments monthly up from an average of 3billion previously,” Shah disclosed.

With the new WMS system, supplies to the Nakumatt Central Warehouse, are now electronically scanned, verified, loaded and shipped to the respective branches. Technically, WMS also works on the pre-distribution process where allocation can be made prior to receipt of goods and cross dock to shipping area when it is received.

Prior to the WMS integration, goods were manually loaded and delivery notes generated with poor rates of accuracy.

f you were around in the 90s then chokers are nothing new and fashion being the most cyclical thing in existence has produced a 90s resurgence like never before. Here is the thing with these chokers, they are often overpriced and shockingly easy to make.

All you need is the length of velvet rope, which is easily

purchased at an affordable jewelry store, superglue, scissors and gold tips but those are completely optional, choker will still look great without them.

Measure the string around your neck 2 to 3 times, this of course is still all up to you, and you could even go up to 4. Once you have a length you are comfortable with

snip the extra off and you could now superglue the gold tips to the ends. Spread the superglue on the inside of the tips and insert the ends of the velvet rope. You could do this with a stick or a toothpick just make sure not to get any on your fingers.

Once that dries wrap it around your neck, make a bow and you are good to go.

Roma thrash Fiorentina, Bayern progress in Cup Edin Dzeko scored twice as Roma trashed Fiorentina to set a new club record. The capital club have won their last 14 home games in Serie A, breaking their record which had stood since 1930.

Dzeko, who is now the league’s top scorer with 17 goals, opened the scoring before Federico Fazio headed in a second. Radja Nainggolan turned in Kevin Strootman’s cross and Dzeko capitalised on a Davide Astori error to complete the comfortable victory. Roma, who move up to second, are four points behind leaders Juventus, although they have played a game more than the champions who play Crotone tonight.

In Germany, Bayern Munich reached the German Cup quarter-finals by beating Wolfsburg. Douglas Costa scored the only goal for the holders when his shot was deflected in by Luiz Gustavo. Cameroon’s Nyom: No regrets about missing Cup of Nations West Brom’s Cameroonian defender Allan Nyom has insisted he has no regrets about not being part of the Africa Cup of Nationswinning squad.

Nyom also revealed that after initially rejecting his country’s call-up he changed his mind - but coach Hugo Broos told him there was no place for him.

After winning the trophy on Sunday, Broos said those Cameroonian players not there would rue their decision.

“Let him know that I don’t have any regrets,” Nyom told BBC World Football.

The 28-year-old was one of seven Cameroon players to decide to miss the tournament, with Liverpool defender Joel Matip another high-profile absentee.

“If before the tournament they had told me ‘Cameroon is going to win and you are not part of the squad’, I don’t mind because I’m happy I’m playing for my club - it’s much more important for me.

“If I had been there, it could stall my club career.”

Moura appeared to be offside before turning the ball home from close range. Edinson Cavani had headed them into the lead before a late equaliser from Nicolas de Preville, who was gifted the ball by PSG keeper Alphonse Areola. The champions remain three points behind leaders Monaco, who beat Montpellier 2-1 earlier in the evening. Claudio Ranieri: Leicester City back coach despite poor form Leicester City have given their “unwavering support” to manager Claudio Ranieri despite the reigning Premier League champions being just one point above the relegation zone.

The Italian had been under pressure after a run of just two wins in their last 15 Premier League games.

However, the Foxes said in a statement that “the entire club is and will remain united behind its manager”.

“This is not a crisis,” Ranieri said following the club’s backing.

“When you aren’t winning you lose confidence, it is normal.”

Leicester play Derby County at home in an FA Cup fourth round replay tonight and club chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha will be flying in from Thailand for the game - but also to give a public show of support to Ranieri.

“Never have I seen a chicken burger, only deep fried chicken.

Bayern’s Philip Lahm announces retirement

ayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm will retire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old, who captained Germany to their 2014 World Cup victory, announced his decision after Bayern’s German Cup last-16 win over Wolfsburg last night.

It was the defender’s 501st game for the Bundesliga leaders. “I can continue with my leadership style, giving my best every day, in every training, until the end of the season. I can keep doing it this season but not beyond,” he said. It means he will leave the German champions a year before his contract expires. “I’ve been considering it for more than the past year,” he added.

“You have to keep testing yourself, you have to keep asking yourself ‘how is it’, day by day, week by week on the training pitch, what’s the feeling you have.”

The Bayern youth product made his senior debut in 2002 and has won seven Bundesliga titles with the club, as well as the Champions League. He also captained Germany during their 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil before he quit international football that summer.

15 Leicester City back Italian coach Ranieri

Luis Suarez scored and was sent off as nine-man Barcelona held on to reach the Copa del Rey final with a thrilling aggregate victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp.

Suarez tapped in on 43 minutes, before Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto and Atletico’s Yannick Carrasco were sent off for receiving two yellow cards. Substitute Kevin Gameiro then missed a penalty before equalising late on.

Suarez was then shown a second yellow and will therefore miss the final.

Antoine Griezmann had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside when Atletico had a man advantage, while Lionel Messi also hit the bar with a brilliant free-kick in a frantic second half.

Holders Barcelona will now meet either Alaves or Celta Vigo in the final, with those sides playing the second leg of their semi-final tie on Wednesday. Luis Enrique’s decision to play Messi was ultimately vindicated as the talismanic

striker avoided the yellow card that would have ruled him out of the final, but Suarez’s suspension will come as a shock, with the Uruguay striker picking up two yellow cards in the final three minutes.

The first was a clear foul but Suarez was perhaps right to feel aggrieved at the second, with Koke making the most of their aerial collision as referee Jesus Gil Manzano produced his third red card of the evening.

The other two dismissals were less controversial, Roberto committing a daft foul when already on a caution, just as Aleix Vidal was being readied to replace the right-back on 57 minutes.

Carrasco’s second clumsy foul 12 minutes later was similarly ill-advised, opening up the game and leaving Atletico vulnerable to a Barcelona side previously in retreat.

Yet even with Carrasco’s dismissal, the visitors will feel they squandered plenty of clear

opportunities to take Barcelona to extra time or even completely overturn the 2-1 first-leg deficit.

They dominated the early stages, playing with an intensity that rattled the hosts, and Carrasco and Savic both missed decent chances before keeper Miguel Angel Moya parried Messi’s effort straight into Suarez’s path for the opener.

Barcelona were then able to slow the pace of the game to suit their style, with Atletico unable to trouble them for long periods before a remarkable final half-hour.

Gameiro struck a poor penalty attempt against the bar, before tapping in Griezmann’s squared pass for the equaliser minutes later.

And although Atletico will point to the incorrect decision to rule out Griezmann’s fine finish, Barcelona ultimately showed enough resolve to progress as they attempt to win a third straight Copa del Rey.
