New Ebola cases put Kenya on high alert The world is on high-alert following a pervasive fear that the Ebola outbreak that has crippled West Africa is now crossing continental borders.
Government and humanitarian officials in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the three worst affected West African nations,
have already stirred palpable concerns that the epidemic will spread around the region and the world at large. “The matter has reached
a crisis point,” Liberian Information Minister Lewis Brown was quoted telling international journalists. His remarks echoed those of
Doctors Without Borders, who have also warned that the crisis is getting out of control.

Andrew Mghanga is the winner of the second SportPesa jackpot worth Sh5,351,700. Mghanga correctly predicted the outcome of 13 jackpot games last week. “I am really happy to have won the jackpot, after several attempts. This is indeed a life-changing win and I would
like to urge Kenyans to try their luck,” said Mghanga. “I was moved beyond words. It was surprising although I knew one day I will win. I did not know that the day would come this soon.” Mghanga promised to continue playing. Another Sh5million jackpot is up for grabs this week.
SportPesa, a sports betting lottery launched early this year, allows football fans to place monetary bets on their favorite teams and stand to win instant cash if their prediction comes true or lose their money if it doesn’t. The lottery has a weekly jackpot ,which is the hardest amount to win because it
only has specific games to bet on, and requires one to get all 13 predictions right to win it. To participate, just send an SMS with the word GAME to 79079 or register online at www.sportpesa.com. Next, place a bet on any of the three possible outcomes within the 90 minutes of a football game.

World on high alert over Ebola From Page 1 And the situation is so severe that some humanitarian organizations are pulling out to protect their own. International evangelical Christian humanitarian agency Samaritan’s Purse has already recalled all nonessential personnel from Liberia. The Peace Corps announced Wednesday it is doing the same, removing its 340 volunteers from that country, as well as Sierra Leone and Guinea.
The US Center for Disease Control is said to be considering raising travel warnings to affected countries and has advised against any non-essential travel to countries affected. Only yesterday, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond chaired the government’s Cobra crisis management committee meeting to assess the situation saying they regard it as a very serious threat. The Kenyan government has also announced that it has enhanced
screenings at all border points to prevent and contain the spread of Ebola. A tweet posted by the Kenya national Disaster Operations Center said health officers are on standby and are vigilant to monitor the spread of the disease. Kenya Airways, which flies 44 times a week to 10 cities in West Africa, also announced that they have put in place measures to prevent the spread of the world’s worst ever-outbreak of the disease.
Ebola is a highly contagious disease with no cure. It causes severe fever, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some cases, organ failure and continual bleeding to victims. According to the World Health Organisation, the disease is fatal in up to 90 per cent of cases and is spread mainly through body fluids including sweat. An infected person does not pose danger until symptoms begin showing with patients normally quaran-
tined to contain its spread. So far, the death toll from the outbreak stands at 672 with 1201 cases reported. Liberia has announced that it is closing down schools, border crossings and markets, and aired public information videos. Mr Brown also said that his nation also needs more protective gear for those dealing with the ill, sanitation and hygiene experts to stave off disease and doctors to treat the sick.
PROUDLY AFRICAN: Michelle Obama (Centre) addresses participants of a leadership fellowship in Washington, where she expressed pride in her African heritage. Her husband, President Obama, however, was subtle on his African heritage, referencing his Kenyan father only once in the question-and-answer session.
Michelle Obama proud of her African heritage
US First lady Michelle Obama embraced her family’s African roots in a speech yesterday, telling a young audience that the ‘blood of Africa’ runs through her veins as she urged changing traditional beliefs on the worth of educating women. Her husband had shied away from discussing his African heritage in his own remarks to the 500
Africans finishing a six-week Washington leadership fellowship on Monday, referencing his Kenyan father only once in the question-and-answer session. But Michelle Obama said as an African American woman, her discussion with the African youth was “deeply personal”. “The roots of my family tree are in Africa,’ the first lady told the
cheering crowd. “My husband’s father was born and raised in Kenya. Members of our extended family still live there. “I have had the pleasure of traveling to Africa many times over the years, including four trips as First Lady, and I have brought my mother and my daughters along whenever I can. ‘The blood of Africa runs through
my veins, and I care deeply” MrsObama said, addressing her listeners as her ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters.’ Three months before congressional elections that could determine the fate of much of President Obama’s platform, Michelle Obama’s popularity remains high while her husband’s has sunk.

Young Africans have an appetite for technology
Homosexuals out to overturn Uganda’s anti-gay law Ugandan activists have filed a petition at the East African nation’s constitutional court seeking to overturn tough anti-gay laws that President Yoweri Museveni signed into law early this year. The laws, assented to in February, calls for homosexuals to be jailed for life and also outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and obliges Ugandans to denounce gays to the authorities. Human rights groups and the western authorities condemned the new legislation describing it as draconian. But the activists argue that the law was passed in parliament without the necessary quorum of lawmakers. The nine petitioners also claim that the law violates the constitutional right to privacy and dignity, as well as the right to be free from discrimination, and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. “I have a very good feeling about it,” the group’s lawyer Nicholas Opio said after the hearing in a crowded courtroom. He said that if the judges decide the law was not correctly passed by parliament, “the entire act will collapse”. Rights groups say the law has triggered a sharp increase in arrests and assaults of members of the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Western nations have also made a raft of aid cuts to Uganda in protest since the law was passed.
Young Africans have a big appetite for technology, often exploiting it to get ahead. For example 41 per cent of 15 to 24 year olds find new technology exciting and use it as much as they can to make their lives more convenient. Researchers from GfK, a global market data company note that young Africans use technology on activities such as surfing the net, visiting social networking sites and searching for products to buy, compared to 24 per cent of those aged 45 and older. GfK, in its annual study called ‘The Roper Reports Worldwide’, did a consumer trends study conducted in 25 countries, surveying over 37,000 consumers. The Roper Report
is described as the largest and most rigorous consumer trends study in the world, providing companies with a full-bodied source for decision-making. The study focuses on the values, behaviours and consumption and technology trends of consumers across the globe. This year, for the first time, the study included three additional African countries, now covering Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Ghana, said Matthew Glogauer, Account Director for GfK South Africa. Researchers have since found that when it comes to technology, these countries have some of the largest appetites, with young people getting news as soon as it is posted on line.
Bungoma gets lions share of new teachers
THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE: Pupils in class. The TSC will employ 10,000 teachers to plug the existing shortage.
Bungoma county will be the biggest beneficiary of the forthcoming employment of 10, 300 teachers next week. The county will get 339 out of the 7, 142 primary school teachers to be hired. A total of 3,158 secondary school teachers will be hired. Kakamega county will get 330 teachers, the second highest allocation. Meru will get the third highest number at 292 followed by Nakuru (290) and Kitui (280). Other top 10 beneficiaries include Makueni (258), Migori (256), Kisii (256), Machakos (241) and Siaya which will get 221 tutors. Just like with all alllocations, Lamu county will get the least number with the teachers’ employer allocating only 29 tutors to the volatile region. Other least gainers are Isiolo (32), Garissa (40), Marsabit (42) and Samburu (43). Only 143 of teachers to be hired will be deployed in Nairobi schools. The recruitment is aimed at replacing an estimated 5,000 teachers who retired over the recent years. The government also budgeted for the hiring of an additional 5, 000 tutors in this financial year. TSC announced that the recruitment will start today until August 11 and the successful candidates posted to their new stations by September 1, 2014. Applicants for these posts in primary schools must be holders of P1 certificates, TSC said.
East Africa Community to host regional university student debate Preparations are underway for the East African Community (EAC) University Students’ Debate 2014, with scholars from institutions of higher learning in the region scheduled to attend. The
event which will be held in Nairobi on September 4 and 5, will bring together students from various universities in the region. Organizers have billed it as an important avenue for sharing information,
exchanging of ideas and promoting discourse and sensitization. EAC in collaboration with the GiZ-EAC Programme held a three-day preparatory meeting yesterday to map out the strategies for the
debate. Deputy Secretary General of the EAC, Charles Njoroge, has urged youth to continue to champion the tenets of integration. Njoroge commended the EAC Youth Ambassadors Platform for the noble
work of spearheading and popularizing EAC integration within the university community. “I also want to assure you that EAC is committed to strengthening the networks the Platform has
created with University administrations over time as well as the EAC Youth Clubs in fulfilment of the principal of participation and involvement of all segments of the society in the integration agenda.”

IEBC commissioners survive as MPs reject ouster petition
Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) survived an ouster bid yesterday after MPs rejected a petition seeking their removal from office. The legislators voted against a petition filed by activist Wafula Buke who wanted the IEBC bosses sacked for claims of incompetence, gross misconduct and violation of the Constitution by the nine commissioners in the run up to
FIND THE KEYWORD IN
But legislators allied to the opposition differed when the report was presented for adoption on Wednesday afternoon, forcing a vote, which went in favour of the commissioners. Mr Buke had claimed that IEBC was incompetent and biased. As such, he wanted all the nine commissioners including chairman Ahmed Isaack Hassan (pictured) dismissed. The eight others are Hassan’s
and during last year’s general election. That petition was directed to Parliament’s Justice and legal Affairs committee to scrutinize and advise on whether the house should direct President Uhuru Kenyatta to form a tribunal to investigate the commissioners. But the majority of the 28-member committee chaired by Ainabkoi MP, Samuel Chepkonga said there was no justification for the establishment of such a tribunal.

12 students win scholarships for graduate studies in China Twelve Kenyan Students were yesterday awarded scholarships for graduate studies at the International College of The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, in China. The students drawn from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and the National Museums of Kenya will begin the three year graduate programmes in September 2014. Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa, who announced the scholarships at JKUAT’s main campus in Juja yesterday, said it was part of a wider cooperation between China and Kenya towards fostering integration between the two countries through higher education.
Kipsang, in a speech read by Mr. James Kiburi, said the scholarships will create the necessary capacity to foster biodiversity management in Kenya. She said the establishment of the research centre and the Botanical Garden is in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the African Union consolidated plan of action for science and technology, which recognizes the need for conservation and preservation of biodiversity in the continent. JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga, who received the diplomat at the institution, said the University had already set aside 40 acres of land, where the Centre to host eight research laboratories will be established.
The ambassador said the Chinese embassy is committed to see the establishment of ChinaAfrica Centre for Research and Education (CACRE) and a Botanical Garden at JKUAT, in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. “The Centre will promote biodiversity research and conservation not only in Kenya but also in Africa, besides fostering relations between Kenya and China,” Liu said. The diplomat reiterated that the actualization of the Centre had the support of Chinese Prime Minister, Li Kequiang, who spoke about the same during his tour of Kenya in May. Excessive middle age drinking linked to memory loss Excess drinking in middle age doubles the risk of memory loss in later life, new research suggests. A US study found men and women in their 50s and 60s with a history of alcohol abuse were more likely to have memory problems up to two decades later. “The study showed that people who admitted to alcohol abuse at some point in their lives were twice as likely to have severe memory problems, and as the research relied on self-reporting that number may be even higher,” Dr Iain Lang, from the University of Exeter Medical School said. Lang, who also led the study whose findings were published in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, says the research adds to growing evidence that excessive drinking can impair mental processing. The researchers say it is a public health issue that needs to be addressed. Scientists questioned 6,500 US middle-aged adults about their past alcohol consumption. Those who answered yes to one of these questions were considered to have a problem with alcohol. They had more than double the risk of developing severe memory impairment, the study found. “We know that alcohol is bad for the brain in general, but it’s not just how much you drink but how it affects you,” the report noted in its introduction. “The amount that you drink is important. What is also important is if you experience any problems in your drinking or if other people tell you you have a problem,” it stated.
Folly of youth as teens burn themselves for fun
Around this time last year, there was a viral phenomenon called the SmackCam. The game was pretty simple: people caught unsuspecting victims with a smack while the cameras were running. The game was already dangerous. But people kept trying to amp up the stakes by adding objects (like bottles
of juice). The SmackCam era eventually faded. But because the Internet has no chill, there’s a new game. One that’s even more dangerous. It’s called the TheFireChallenge, and it’s been all over Vine, Facebook, and Twitter over the last couple of weeks. Basically, the game consists of
young teenagers lighting themselves on fire, using rubbing alcohol and a torch. The game has started to gain considerable coverage after things went too far with a 15-year-old Kentucky boy. The teenager, explaining what happened, said: “I just poured alcohol on it, and lit it, and it just
automatically went and burst…Literally after it got put out it was already blistering, it’s just hard.” This accident hasn’t stopped others from trying the game. And while some are able to pull it off with minimal harm, here is video after video in which the flame starts to spread uncontrollably.
Israel shells UN school sheltering Gaza refugees A number of shells today fell next to a UN school housing displaced residents in Gaza just a day after another schoolturned-shelter was hit by artillery killing more than a dozen people. “The school itself was not targeted, it was nearby the school,” United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna said today. He said no one was killed inside the school (Beit Lahiya
School for Girls) although eight people were slightly injured. The conflict in Gaza is more than three weeks old now and has left more than 1,300 people dead and even more wounded, most of them Palestinian civilians. The violence between Israel’s military and Palestinian militants is playing out against a backdrop of failed humanitarian cease-fire attempts, with militants firing
rockets from Gaza into Israel and Israelis responding with airstrikes. A large part of the criticism has been leveled at Israel and its airstrikes, which have bombarded Gaza. Israel in turn has accused Hamas of hiding weapons, including rockets, in schools and launching attacks from near shelters. The Israeli military said Thursday it is calling up 16,000 additional reservists. The addition brings the total
number of reservists called up since the beginning of the conflict on July 8 to 86,000, a military spokeswoman said. With the death toll mounting daily, the United Nations and the United States demanded more be done to protect civilians. While saying Israel has a right to defend itself, White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz said, “We’ve also been very clear that Israel needs to do more to live up to its own
standards to limit civilian casualties.” It was a sentiment echoed by US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, who also said Israel is being put in a tough situation because “Hamas is hiding rockets in places to prevent the Israelis from going after them.” “So look, Hamas is taking steps here that put civilians at risk. But we do believe the Israelis need to do more,” Harf told reporters during a briefing.

Bank unveils plans to force criminals to return bonuses
NEW PRODUCT: Customers at a KCB banking hall. The bank plans to launch Islami-based financial services.
KCB plans to offer interest-free loans The Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) plans to launch Islamic- based financial services next month, a trend that is quickly picking up speed among many local lenders. Islamic Banking system, popularly known as Sharia, allows borrowers to take loans without paying interest. Islamic banking does not allow banks to charge
interest on loans. Instead, banks make profits through trade or investment as customers use assets, like the business they plan to invest in, as collateral. In Kenya, the system is open to Islamic and nonIslamic clients. After securing regulatory approvals,KCB will launch the product later in the year. The regional bank is already offering the Sharia banking
products in Tanzania. “Islamic banking proposition is part of our financial inclusion agenda to reach out to the unbanked population,” said KCB Group CEO Joshua Oigara. KCB Islamic based banking service, dubbed Sahal, will first be rolled out in branches in areas with a heavy Muslim presence such as Kimathi in Nairobi,
Eastleigh, Kilindini, Mvita and Mwembe Tayari in Mombasa, Garissa and Lamu. The Islamic banking industry has grown in under five years to account for two per cent of the total business in Kenya. KCB will be joining the ranks of Gulf African Bank and Standard Chartered Bank, both of which offer Islamic banking services.

COFFE CULTURE: Patrons at a Nairobi Java House cafe. The hot drinks market is expected to perform well in coming months.
Hot beverages sector growth shows great promise The hot beverages business is quickly turning into a profitable venture for major companies, small businesses and key retailers alike. A recent study by Euromonitor, a global research group, has revealed that increasing westernisation and higher incomes among the middle and upper income groups are driving the growth of the sub-sector. The drinks are also turning into a major part of Kenyan children’s diets due to affordability and ease of preparation with tea and coffee. This gives the country more than Sh53 billion in revenue annually. The sector employs
about 500,000 Kenyans across the production chain. An estimated 450,000 of them are small holder farmers while the rest are factory workers and coffee shop employees. “Urban Kenyans are demanding healthier hot beverages generally, with fruit flavours becoming increasingly popular,” say experts from Euromonitor. “Flavouring tea using natural mixtures of herbs, spices and extracts in liquid or granulate form has become very popular in most speciality tea categories.” The study, which covered consumer trends over the past year, shows that products with health benefits such as
green tea are popular. Kenya Tea Packers Ltd (Ketepa) remains the leading player in the hot drinks market. “Ketepa continued to dominate hot drinks sales in 2013,” says the study. The company has built up a loyal following for its flagship black tea brand, ‘Fahari ya Kenya’, while providing jobs to more than 20,000 people. Based on the study, the hot drinks market is expected to perform well in coming months. Population growth and marketing campaigns to increase brand awareness will be the main drivers of growth, say the experts.
The Bank of England is due to unveil a plan which may force rule-breaking bankers to return bonuses for up to seven years that were awarded them. Losses, poor risk management or other bad behaviour could trigger what experts are now calling ‘clawbacks’. Many bankers receive a large chunk of their pay in the form of an annual bonus, which can be up to double their basic salary. Under current UK rules, a bonus is usually delayed for up to three to five years during which time it can be ‘clawed back’ if appropriate. But misconduct such as rigging interest rates or reckless risk taking among
bankers can take longer to emerge. So under the new policy, bonuses may be clawed back up to seven years later. Even if the bonuses have been spent, the move could mean money paid to bankers who break the rules can still be demanded back. Bank of England officials said there will be new proposals that could see negligent bankers jailed. The move comes days after Lloyds Banking Group, a leading UK financial institution, was fined £218 million (Sh19 billion) for “serious misconduct” over some illegal rigging of the price rates of the yen, sterling pound and US dollar.
newsbriefs Crown Paints set to train 3,000 painters Crown Paints Kenya, a leading paints manufacturer, will invest Sh40 million to train painters. Rakesh Rao, the company’s CEO, says the investment will train painters in East Africa in advanced modern painting skills. “Recruitment will be done in all major cities nationwide,” he said in a statement earlier in the week. “We shall be able to reach many customers, since we want to work with zero queues.”
Rao says since the opening of Crown Paints Showrooms in three major towns, demand for designer paints and coating has grown enormously. He says there is need to equip painters with relevant market skills. Rao said Crown will train at least 200 painters by the end of the year using the funds. “We want to take paint to the masses. That is why we are training painters. Our aim is to train 3000 painters in the next three years,” he says.
Six million jobs at risk as EU bans flower chemicals Up to 6 million Kenyans working in the flower sector may lose their jobs if the European Union enforces a move to ban importation of pesticide-ridden plants. This means flowers containing pesticide levels beyond the recommended doses risk losing access to the market. EU governments have ramped up the testing of fresh produce for the presence of pesticides such as Dimethoate and other chemicals blamed for the rise in cancer cases in Europe and Africa. Felix Kosgei, Kenya’s Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Secretary last week said an increasing
amount of fresh produce being shipped to EU market has exceeded maximum residual levels (MRLs) allowed for chemicals. “We have been given a deadline of September 30 this year to fully comply with MRL rules, otherwise we will be locked out of the market, which would be a huge loss to the entire economy,” Koskei said. Up to 150,000 farmers export fresh produce to the EU. “We will publish new rules to tame the use of disputed chemicals and additional regulations to tighten inspection of the produce destined for the export market,” Koskei said.

Umoja man survives on roasted green maize Matolo Kivuva sells roasted maize in Umoja estate. He knows the popularity of the charcoal-roasted snack and that has kept him in the business. Maize consumption in Kenya is estimated at 98 kilograms per person
per year, which translates to roughly 34 million bags per year, says Jayne Thomas from the Tegemeo Insitute of Agricultural Policy and Development. Kivuva buys a daily stock of 20 cobs at Sh20 each. He sells
a full roasted maize cob for Sh40. The smallest piece he can sell costs Sh10. On a given day he can make up to Sh800, a profit of Sh300. He starts roasting maize from 2pm saying that it is the best time to get customers.
“In the morning, no one will want maize,” he says, a fact that has prompted him to sell it in the afternoon. From the money he makes, Kivuva buys charcoal and chilli for those who prefer some spices.
Sharp rise in mobile phone subscribers The number of mobile phone users in the country has increase by more than 6,000 per cent over the last few months, officials from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) have said. In their latest report, experts say there has been an increase of 520,956 new subscribers between January and March, 2014 compared to an increase of 7,541 subscribers during 2013’s last quarter. However, Essar, through its yuMobile brand, lost 100,000 customers over the same period as they moved to other networks. Kenya now has 31.8 million
mobile phone users, equivalent to about 80 per cent of the population. The data comes at a time when mobile phone manufacturers are moving to make smartphones a popular choice for consumers in the region. In the past few weeks, both Huawei and Tecno, two major phone companies with a presence in Kenya, have launched new highend smartphones at events attended by Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. “While in the process of deepening our mobile phone penetration in East
Africa, we have developed a dedicated focus on driving smartphone adoption,” said Tecno Mobile President George Zhu. “We are committed to doing business with Kenya while addressing the mobile phone demands, and the future sees us establishing an even greater foothold. Providing for risk of change can save business from collapse
‘Take advantage of business opportunities as well as increase their competitive strength’
Every business faces the risk of losing revenue due to various changes, including competition from other enterprises, a change in customers’ preferences in government policies. Tom Olumoya, the CEO of Nigerian company, Deon Consulting Services, says most businesses do not factor these risks into their planning and so ignore the possibility of being able to manage the situation and protect their investments. Olumoya says developing an effective risk management framework helps an organisation to “take advantage of business opportunities as well as increase their competitive strength.” He says this can reduce the mortality rate of SMEs “If a business owner cannot properly analyse the risk, he can bring someone in to do it,” explains Olumoya. “But people
do not want to pay and their businesses end up paying for it.” He argues that forecasting political risks, social risk and other risks that are external, would help the business owner plan well. “It is, however, important that before you can hire a risk manager, you must be sure to check out their background. Have they worked for any company before? They have to have a substantial resume before you can hire them to ensure that you do not bring them in, they zap your money and nothing different.” For small, medium and even large businesses, there are a number of local risk management agents and companies. Firms like AoN and SGS, and even a number of local banks, for instance, provide the services highlighted by Olumoya.
SAFE PASSAGE: A footbrigde on Thika Road. KeNHA is building one on Mombasa Road.
Footbridge on Mombasa Road to save lives The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is putting up a footbridge on Mombasa Road to give pedestrians a safer way to cross the dangerous highway. Mombasa Road is one of Nairobi’s busiest highways and has seen quite a number of accidents over the years. Close to 100 people have been killed on the highway since it was expanded to a six-lane dual carriageway a few years ago. “Studies conducted last year
indicated that majority of the accidents took place at General Motors and Bellevue, partly due to the growth of industrial and residential developments around those areas,” KeNHA Head of Communications, Charles Njogu said in an earlier statement. KeNHA officials have given notice traffic disruption on Sunday as the footbridge’s platform will be lifted in place. Traffic on the highway will be redirected at the Total
Petrol Station U-turn and along the Enterprise Road junction U-turn. “Motorists are urged to plan their travel with this in mind,” KeNHA officials have said. Construction of the footbridge at the General Motors section of the road, started in August 2013. KeNHA plans to put up another on the Bellevue section of Mombasa Road by the end of August, 2014. The footbridge next to GM will cost Sh185 million.

Watch Out The locally popular injectable birth control method, Depo Provera, has again been linked to higher HIV infections in women. A new study presented at the International Aids Conference in Melbourne, Australia, last Thursday, says the use of the injection puts users at a high risk of HIV infection. Similar claims were raised three years ago from a study carried out in Kenya and six other African countries. The study claimed Depo Provera doubled the risk of being infected with HIV among users. All hail the all-round classic denim shirt The denim shirt is a classic. It is a versatile, casual and timeless clothing that never seems to go out of fashion. The denim button-down shirt is one of the easiest and stress-free wardrobe pieces that one can own. It has the ability to give an outfit an instant “cool factor” especially if the aim is to pull off the effortless yet chic look. When it comes to wearing denim on denim the key is for the shirt and the jeans be of different washes that
is; the shades of blue be different. If they have the same shade of blue, it will make the outfit monotonous, boring and dull. The stronger the contrast between them, the better. For example, one can wear a pair of light blue skinny jeans with a dark blue shirt or vice versa. The denim shirt can also be won as as a jacket. In the fashion world, denim is considered a neutral colour so it can be worn with a top of whatever colour underneath the
shirt and it will still look good. Denim shirts tend to create a casual look but one can choose to dress up their outfit by wearing the right accessories. Simple metallic jewellery like gold or silver hoop earrings or bangle bracelets, can give the outfit an upgrade and a carefree appearance. At the bottom, one can wear their preferred style. Be it leather pants or skirts. Denim shirts look perfect in combination with shorts, printed pants and long skirts.

Body modification goes 3D with internal implants The 3D body art internal implant has become quite popular in the body modification circles. In this version of body modification, an object is fully inserted under the skin to effect a sculptural change on the surface. Steve Haworth, US artist, is credited with its “invention”. Because it is not an authorised medical operation or procedure, it is not done by a certified surgeon but by a body modification artist. This
means no use of pain killers or anaesthesia and the person is usually fully conscious during the operation. An opening is cut on the skin and it is then expanded to allow insertion of the object, and then stitched up. The most common inserted objects are titanium, silicone and stainless steel. There is the risk that one can develop an allergic reaction and reject the object or even get an infection. The object will also move
under the skin from time to time after insertion causing discomfort. Another serious risk is hitting the nerves while making the incision or inserting the object. Haworth says the motivation of the implants is extreme individualism. “Ten years ago if you had a piercing or a tattoo you stood alone, and today, even though piercing and tattooing are still a wonderful form of self-expression, you stand in a group.”

showtime Cultural heritage pageant in the works Lovers of Kenyan culture across the country are set to welcome a series of beauty pageants and cultural theme nights, which will culminate with the Miss Cultural Heritage pageant to be held early December. Ignatius Wafula, (bottom left) the national director, Miss Cultural Heritage—Kenya says the main objective of the event is is to exploit Kenya’s rich culture and promote cultural heritage tourism to “complement the safaris, which are now getting saturated.” “The event is similar to the Miss Cultural Heritage pageants held in most of Southern African countries and it is the first time it is held in
Kenya. The overall winners – both Mr. and Miss Cultural Heritage will be our real cultural ambassadors,” said Wafula. Auditions started July in various counties with the regional finals set for October and national finals in December. “The uniqueness of the our plans is that on the day of the finals, there will be a climax street carnival, akin to the Rio Carnival of Brazil, where Kenyans of all cultures dressed traditionally will join a three-pronged procession, in three selected streets of Nairobi, to the venue of the pageant finals.” The organisers will be hosting cultural nights every two months
in various counties to help raise funds to conduct the overall beauty pageant and street carnival. The winner of the national event will represent the country in the continental Miss Heritage Pageant to be held in Kingdom of Lesotho on the 6th of December .

1.The feel of the leather: First, one has to feel the leather. Prada handbags are made of the finest Italian leather, which is smooth yet very tough. Fake ones are made of cheap leather that is rough and waxy. 2. The exterior logo: The colour of the enamel on the exterior logo plaque should be the exact colour of the bag or very close. The Prada exterior plaque should be firmly attached with even stitching around it. Fake Prada bags mostly do not have an exterior logo plaque. 3.The zippers:Prada handbag zippers are smooth that is they do not get stuck when you close or open the bag. The zipper also has the name of the maker, fake ones do not. 4.Number tag:Authentic Pradas have a small white tag in the interior with a random number on them. This number can be searched on the Prada website.

HANGING UP THE GLOVES Manny Pacquiao has announced plans to retire from boxing in 2016 P.15
Shakes Mashaba promises to take Bafana to Russia Shakes Mashaba began his job as the new Bafana Bafana coach with the target of helping the team qualify the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This is part of the association’s Vision 2022 programme. Unlike previous coaches, Mashaba has laid out longterm plans instead of seeking qualifications for next year’s continental tournament in Morocco. He is in west Africa with the national Under-20 side. Mashaba was rung by Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble for a telephone reaction. Mashaba pledged not to disappoint South Africans “and we will do our best to do the country proud”. Chosen by Safa national executive committee ahead of the highly punted Carlos
Queiroz with whom he was recommended by Safa technical committee, Mashaba is renowned for being his own man, a trait that cost him the job last time around. In bringing him back to the job, Safa have acknowledged the man’s ability to produce results at all levels – his penchant for not kow-towing to power notwithstanding. Jordaan said: “He has a proven record, is a hard worker and he fulfilled all requirements we were looking for to drive our senior national team back to where we all believe they belong – at the top.” Mashaba has previously qualified Bafana for the Africa Cup of Nations (2004) but lost the job after declining to choose the squad his bosses wanted for a high-profile friendly against
England. Before his first full-time tenure at Bafana, he held the position in a number of caretaker roles and did well. In his 19 matches, he never lost an official tie with his only two defeats coming in a minor tournament. “I’m thrilled with the honour you bestowed on me,” Mashaba said. “I’ll pull out all stops to ensure our people feel part of the national team and the only way is to bring good results.” While he will continue coaching the Under-20s until after the African Youth Championship qualifying tie with Cameroon, Mashaba faces a tough schedule of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with back-to-back clashes against Sudan and Nigeria in the first week of September.

Nigerian weightlifter tests positive for banned drugs
cheater: Chika Amalaha tested positive for diuretics and masking agents.
Nigerian teenage weightlifter Chika Amalaha has been suspended from the Commonwealth Games after testing positive for diuretics and masking agents taken after she won gold in the women’s 53kg category. The Commonwealth Games Federation announced Tuesday that the 16-year-old provided an ‘A’ sample on July 25 which revealed traces of diuretics and masking agents. She will have a ‘B’ sample tested at a laboratory in London on July 30. Commonwealth Games Federation Chief Executive Mike Hooper said: “We (have) issued a formal notice of disclosure to an athlete following an adverse analytical finding as a consequence of an incompetition test. “That athlete is Nigerian weightlifter Chika Amalaha
who was tested on July 25th. That athlete has now been suspended from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.” Amalaha snatched a best of 85kg before managing 111kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 196kg. This made her the youngest Commonwealth weightlifter gold medallist. It was the first doping case for the Glasgow Games and will likely call into question the legitimacy of weightlifting as a Commonwealth Games sport given its history of drug-related incidents. Hooper insists the sport had its place in multi-sport events. “I think weightlifting is a fantastic sport and a strong Commonwealth and Olympic sport,” he said.
Wanga keen on guiding El Merreikh to Cecafa glory Kenyan international Allan Wanga is keen on helping his El Merreikh club to Cecafa Kagame Club glory in Kigali between August 8 and 24. The forward, who is with the national team for Sunday’s crucial African Cup of Nations second round qualifiers against Lesotho, said he hopes to win his first regional title with the Sudanese side. It will be the first time for Wanga to play in the championship. His ambition is to add a regional club medal to the national title he won with the Harambee Stars last year
when he captained the national team to the Senior Challenge Cup victory. “I want to give my best to help my team to lift the title. It will be very fulfilling if we win because it will add to the medal I already have with the national team,” Wanga said. Wanga, who moved to the Khartoum side from Kenyan Premier League giants AFC Leopards a few weeks ago, has scored twice for the club in as many matches in the Sudanese league.

‘Training has been great here in Glasgow, the weather is very cold but I am now used to it’
Yego relaxed ahead of Saturday throw
LOOKING AHEAD: Javelin thrower Julius Yego is taking aim at gold in the final on Saturday.
National javelin champion Julius Yego, will be targeting to improve on his 85.40m personal best when he lines up for the final of the Commonwealth Games on Saturday. The 25-year-old, who is captain of the field events team has blazed the trail to the top of male javelin throwing in Kenya
over the last three years, finishing just outside the medals during last year’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow where he recorded his best throw for fourth. Yego, the first African Olympics finalist and two-time African champion believes the Club Games is perfect opportunity for him to win a med-
al in the major competition after conquering the continent twice. “I am going for two things, national record and gold. Training has been great here in Glasgow, the weather is very cold but I am now used to it,” said the Youtube man. “The 2010 edition in India was my first time to compete outside Ken-
ya although I reached the finals it was not my best performance since I threw 69.60m which is way below the standards of winning a gold medal. Yego, who made history at the 2012 Olympics when he competed in the final with a then continental record of 81.81m in the qualifying
rounds, says his performance in Moscow exposed him and is now ready to step it uup from there. The police officer is encouraged by team Kenya’s performance which has so far managed nine medals, four Gold and similar number of Silver with one Bronze, he is seeking to hard more on Saturday.
England close in on series-levelling win over India
Kirui leads another Kenyan medal sweep
England - 569/7 declared and 204/4 declared, India 330 and 112-4. England moved closer to levelling the series against India with another dominant display on day four of the third Test in Southampton. Chasing 445 to win, the tourists were reduced to 112-4 at the close, with Moeen Ali taking two wickets and Joe Root weighing in with one. The hosts could have ended the day in an even stronger position had James Anderson clung on to a difficult return chance from Rohit Sharma, who was still there on six, alongside Ajinkya Rahane (18 not out). Earlier, Anderson took two wickets in the morning to finish with 5-53 as India were bowled out for 330, a first-innings deficit of 239. England opted not to enforce the follow-on, coasting to 205-4 before declaing as Root smashed 56 from 41 balls and captain Alastair Cook returned to form with an unbeaten 70.

Moscow World championships last August but nothing should be taken away from Cherotich’s crowning moment in Glasgow. Chemos, a three-time world medalist went into the race sore from the hamstring stretching up to her lower back. She played the role of the mentor guiding her compatriots against the resolute Australian pair of Heiner and Lacaze who stuck with the trio when they broke off from the rest of the field. “I knew Chemos is not so well so we planned I control the pace from the beginning to the end so that she is comfortable to race and it worked,” said Kirui who beat Chemos in the sprint to the finish line.

Player turns stripper in wild Glasgow celebration Nigerian table tennis player Ojo Onaolapo gave the Commonwealth Games more than it bargained for on Tuesday when he greeted his country’s bronze medal success by stripping. India had been the favourites to win the match after claiming bronze in Delhi four years ago. The medal was Nigeria’s 10th in Glasgow.

Serena wins on return
GOOD FOOTING: Serena beat Karolina Pliskova 7-5,6-2 to win her first match on returning from an illness break.
Serena Williams had an ace to end the opening game of her first match since a Wimbledon illness default and defeated Karolina Pliskova in straight sets at the Bank of the West Classic tennis tournament. Williams served nine aces last night in a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of the 22-yearold Czech player to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament in Stanford, California. Williams, 32, had not played since appearing disoriented on the court and quitting a Wimbledon doubles match with sister Venus Williams on July 1. She had lost three days earlier to France’s Alize Cornet in singles in the third round of Wimbledon, her earliest exit there since 2005. “I didn’t feel any extra nerves,” Williams, an American ranked No. 1 in the world, said last night at a news conference. “I think I played really well. I think there’s room for improvement, but I think I’m going in the right direction.” Williams, a 17-time Grand Slam champion who will be trying to win her third straight U.S. Open title beginning Aug. 25, has described her Wimbledon illness as a viral condition and said she will get more medical tests after the tennis season.
Pugilist Pacman set to retire before polls
Fighting congressman Manny Pacquiao confirmed plans to officially retire from boxing in 2016 in time for the national elections as he is expected to vie for a seat in the Senate. In an interview with Anthony Taberna of “Tapatan Ni Tunying,” which airs on Thursday, the eight division champion and Sarangani (in Phillipines) congressman confirmed plans to run for senator under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) in the 2016 elections. “There’s a big possibility that I will run for Senate. UNA has asked me to join its slate, and I’m grateful for
that,” he said. He is expected to fight four more matches before hanging the gloves to give fans few more happy moments. Pacquiao is set to defend his WBO welterweight title against a younger and undefeated US fighter Chris Mark Algieri in November. The 35-year-old boxer-politician said he is not scared of going against younger rivals despite his age. He even finds time to coach and play for PBA expansion team KIA Motors. The Philippine hasn’t knocked out an opponent since 2009 when he won in a knockout over Miguel Cotto.

Pepe, Keita in a friendly clash burst-up The season hasn’t even started yet and the world is already talking of the latest Barcelona and Real Madrid spat. But this time the Catalan club weren’t even involved. In fact, the bad blood came about in a pre-season tie involving Real and a
former Barca star. Roma’s Seydou Keita refused to shake Portugal defender Pepe’s hand and threw a water bottle at him - all before the kick-off of a friendly. There were claims that Pepe had spat with Keita during proceedings
which was not caught on camera. The claims came about ahead of Roma’s 1-0 win over the European champions on Wednesday morning in the Guinness International Champions Cup in Dallas. Pepe and Keita have had battles
down the years in El Clasico games but the ill-feelings seemed to come to an end. Keita has accused Pepe of calling him a monkey during a Supercopa Clasico clash in 2011. After the Mali man refused to shake his opponent’s hand in the
pre-match pleasantries, the pair had to be separated by team mates as Iker Casillas and Xabi Alonso acted as chief peace-makers. The 34-year-old midfielder then decided it was a wise idea to throw a bottle of water at the Real midfielder.
