Juma widow wants FBI, Scotland Yard to join team investigating the killing WEEKEND EDITION, MAY 13-15, 2016

From Page 1 “We as family support call for engagement of foreign help (FBI or Scotland Yard) to assist in the investigations. We are also seeking to engage services of a private investigator,” Miriam told journalists. The widow who was accompanied by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga however cautioned the media against spreading any information related to the death of Juma that they cannot substantiate. She also asked the state to avail the mobile telephone data detailing the various mobile operator masts Jacob Juma’s travelled through on the night of 5th May and the morning of 6th May. “We ask only these two things for now. We shall be requesting more information in due course. We look forward for your cooperation,” she said in what was addressed to the CS and the police boss. Miriam said the family still has a lot of unanswered questions regarding the killing. Among the questions that Miriam said the family wants satisfactorily addressed include, who found the bullet riddled body of Jacob Juma and at what time the body was taken to the City Mortuary. She also said the family wants to know why the police did not immediately secure the alleged scene of crime where Juma’s body and car were found and how many hours it took the police to eventually secure the scene after towing Juma’s car to Karen Police station. The family has also asked the police to provide them with the registration

number of the vehicle that towed Juma’s car to the police station. Since the killing of Juma last week, police have been accused of mishandling the investigations into the murder. The family of the deceased has also registered its displeasure on how the police is handling the situation. During the requiem mass at All Saints Cathedral yesterday, Miriam told mourners that no police officer has

called her to formally inform her about the death of her husband. And she repeated the accusation today saying she only learnt about the death of her husband from her fellow parents when she took children to school. “Jacob Juma left home on Thursday May 5, at 10:40am never to return home again. I tried to reach him several times that night on his phone which went unanswered. The following morning I took children to school as

usual that is when I learnt about his death from other parents at around 7am,” Miriam said. Miriam said the police did nothing to inform her despite Juma having all his identity documents at the time of his death and his residence is well known within Karen. Early reports by police had indicated that Juma was shot several times at close range. This added to another theory that was fronted by police

that the businessman was hurriedly shot in a random, quick-fire, driveby shooting at the scene. The latter theory has however been dismissed by security experts based on the injuries suffered by the deceased. The body of Juma was transported from his Karen home to Wilson Airport to be flown to Kakamega for viewing and later to Bungoma for burial scheduled for tomorrow at his rural home in Bumula. sam_x254

Politicians set to lash out at State during Jacob Juma’s burial

The government will be on the receiving end tomorrow when opposition leaders gather in Bungoma for the funeral of businessman Jacob Juma who was killed a week ago. The mood for the tongue-lashing has already been set with the state being blamed for the murder. At yesterday’s funeral service for the

deceased, Cord leaders and senior politicians from the larger Western region called for the probe of top government officials. Cord leader Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka accused the state of being behind the killing of the businessman. Their statements were backed by family members who have expressed their

dissatisfaction on how the government has handled the investigations so far. Mr Odinga claimed that the state is aware of those who killed Juma and should therefore go directly and arrest them instead of summoning him and his co-principal Moses Wetangula to record statements. “Jacob Juma’s car was towed to Karen police station not far from where he lives. His body was then dumped by the police at City mortuary. The family wasn’t informed. The wife learnt the death of Jacob Juma in the morning as she drove kids to school. Then instead of the Inspector General pursuing his killers who are well known, he is asking Wetangula and Raila to go write a statement. Let him tell that to the parrots and dogs,” Mr Odinga said yesterday. “The Inspector-General knows who killed Jacob Juma,” This was a hit squad and it is known. Let this be the last execution that the country is witnessing and may the blood of Jacob Juma liberate this country,” he added.

Odinga said Juma was killed due to the massive evidence he had on corruption in government. Last weekend at a funeral in Uasin Gishu County said he will reveal the names behind the foul murder at the funeral tomorrow. “Juma called me three weeks ago and in our meeting he told me that his life was in danger because there were people he knew that were planning to kill him. He gave me their names which I will reveal on Saturday during his burial,” Wetangula said. “We want an open-minded investigation to get who killed Jacob Juma. This was not an ordinary killing by ordinary robbers. We will not accept and move on,” he added at yesterday’s mass. But Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has warned Wetangula against spreading rumors on the murder. Chairman of the Departmental Committee on Administration and national security Asman Kamama also warned

politicians against using political platforms such as funerals and rallies to make allegation on who killed the businessman. Speaking on Wednesday, Kamama said politicians should not use the death of Juma for their own political gains saying anybody with any vital information should share it with the police to aid investigations. “We are not helping or making the situation better by discussing who killed Juma in funerals and political rallies, the unsubstantiated claims only complicate the investigations carried out by the police,” Kamama said. Mr Juma’s body was flown to Kakamega Friday morning and a public viewing will be held at Masinde Muliro Gardens. It will also be viewed at Kanduyi Stadium in Bungoma town. The body will the lie overnight at his home ahead of the burial at Mungore village, Khasoko area in Bumula constituency. sam_x254

Condemned buildings to stay up as ministry says it has no funds to carry out demolitions

Condemned buildings across the country may not be demolished just yet as the government decried lack of funds to bring down the structures. Public Works Principal Secretary Paul Mwangi also blamed court injunctions that have been sanctioned by owners of the buildings to halt the demolitions. According to the PS, the National Treasury has not allocated resources to the ministry to bring down the buildings. “The ministry does not have enough resources to bring down the structures. The Treasury is yet to release such allocations,” Prof Mwangi told reporters today. This revelation comes barely a week after authorities in the ministry issues a seven day amnesty to owners of the ‘illegal’ structures to bring them down and salvage their property. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero had issued a similar directive to suspend the demolition of the unfit structures in order to give affected tenants ample time to seek alternative accommodation. And Mwangi observed that the extension period was meant to ensure that all stakeholders were involved in the process to avert legal battles in future. “We are keen to ensure all unsafe building will be demolished but we must do it in a way that respects all parties involved to avoid court room battles as have happened in the past,” he said. He noted that his ministry had embarked on a process of training inspectorate officers across all counties to enhance their inspectorate capacity and authority. “We have already graduated 120 inspectors in our counties and are

continuing to do so until we achieve the international standards workforce,” added the PS. While explaining the challenges facing the construction industry, he poked fingers at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) for allowing substandard construction material in the country that have undermined the structural integrity of many houses. “We have bodies that are not doing

their jobs properly leading to the flooding of substandard materials in the market,” said Mwangi pointing out that many contractors have innocently fallen prey. A total of 226 buildings have been earmarked for demolition in Nairobi following an audit by the National Construction Authority (NCA) and City Hall inspectorate officers. The PS has asked the members of the

public living in affected houses marked ‘X’ to take the amnesty period to vacate the premises to avoid loss of property. ‘Am urging all residents living in houses marked ‘X’ to vacate as soon as possible,’ urged Mwangi. On their part, surveyors have turned the heat on Governors over the collapse of buildings across the country, accusing the county chiefs of being reluctant to demolish condemned

structures. The Institute of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK) have said it is the responsibility of the devolved units to make sure all buildings under construction complied with safe and quality assurance standards. @wilson_x254

Somalia voices opposition to closure of refugee camps Somalia says the decision to close the Daadab and Kakuma refugee camps by the Kenyan government will make the threat of terrorism worse. While appealing for a reconsideration of the decision, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Investment Promotion of the Federal Republic of Somalia stated that this is due to the volatile situation the sudden move and the proposed subsequent actions will cause. Through a statement, it further indicated that it will negatively affect the majority of Somali refugees, who are housed in the two camps. “This decision will negatively affect the majority of Somali refugees who are housed in the two camps and will make the threat of terrorism worst, not better, given the volatile situation this sudden decision and the proposed subsequent actions will cause,” the statement said. The Ministry stated that Somalia is turning the

corner for the better and has been partnering with Kenya to confront global terrorism. It however explains that the collective regional success of this mission depends on intelligence and resource sharing as well as partnership and mutual trust. “Expelling vulnerable Somali refugees at a time Somalia is making internationally recognized progress towards stability and institution building will only increase the risk of insecurity in the region,” it stated. The Ministry expressed its gratitude to the government for hosting Somali refugees for more than two decades and having been equally involved in the mediation and the search for peace in the Somali conflict. “Today, there is an established, agreed and effective mechanism in the form of the Tripartite Agreement that serves as the blue print for positive partnership between Kenya, Somalia and the UNHCR for the safe and

dignified resettlement of Somali refugees in their home country. Abandoning this will be a legal and moral failing on the part of Kenya,” it stated. Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed on Thursday stated that there is no doubt about Kenya’s resolve to shut down Dadaab – the world’s largest refugee camp. Mohamed pointed out that any such the misgivings should end since the decision was final and there is simply no turning back. She made it clear that the relocation was necessary to protect Kenya’s national interests. She said while it was important for Kenya’s concerns to be taken into account, the welfare of the 300,000 plus refugees was also paramount. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has described Dadaab as a breeding ground for Al Shabaab terrorists. www.capitalfm.co.ke

19 million children targeted in measles rubella vaccination A total of 19 million children between the ages of nine months to 14 years are targeted in a week-long immunization campaign against measles which kicks off next week. This comes even as the government announced that more than 100 000 children have died over the last three years due to measles. Health Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri attributed the deaths to lack of immunization. “20 per cent of our children do not get vaccinated every year, leading to a total of 30,000 deaths every year,” Dr Muraguri said. He spoke yesterday during a stakeholders’ forum in Nairobi. According to the PS, 11 counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Meru and Narok have been identified as those with high risks. Others are Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu. The last measles immunization was conducted in 2012 with an earlier one a decade before. It targeted six million children between six months and five years. This year’s campaign will however seek to catch up and even capture those who missed the previous immunization either due to reasons of vaccine efficiency levels (80 per cent) or due to lack of being vaccinated. “To prevent rubella outbreaks and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) everyone should be vaccinated, pregnant women should be screened for rubella,” added Dr. Muraguri. However if a woman gets rubella shortly before getting pregnant or during the first three months of pregnancy, it is very likely to result in miscarriage or congenital anomalies known as CRS. Rubella is a viral infection transmitted from person to person by droplets via coughs and sneezes and is closely linked to measles. Symptoms include a red rash and

swollen lymph glands around the ears and the back of the head, adults experience pain and inflammation of the joints. “Rubella is similarly highly infectious diseases that can result in women delivering children with serious birth defects, added Muraguri. “Up to 50 per cent of individuals infected with rubella may not show symptoms.” In 2014 the Disease Surveillance and Response Unit investigated 1570 suspected measles cases out of which 557 (30 per cent) were rubella positive. This shows an indication of Rubella within our population that is easily mistaken

He suffered fractured limbs and was unconscious when he was rushed to hospital by personnel from the county government in an ambulance. A witness said he had earlier been spotted outside a foreign exchange bureau on Kaunda Street before he proceeded to the adjacent building’s top most floor. “He just stood there without saying anything… the security guards had to move him out of the bureau forcefully,” a witness who sought anonymity said of the Thursday evening incident. “He looked disturbed…he is a young man.” Another guard manning a neighbouring building says he only heard of a loud thud only to realise, “its someone who has jumped the 8th floor of the building.” Police say they will launch an investigation to establish the motive behind the suicide bid. www.capitalfm.co.ke

iPhone jitters weaken Apple’s hold of ‘most valuable’ crown: Apple is still

the world’s most valuable company — by the skin of its teeth. But Wall Street has been engaged for months now in a battle for supremacy that could see the iPhone maker lose the position it has held for the past four years in one of the tech industry’s periodic changes of leadership. A renewed shiver of concern about the outlook for iPhone sales sent Apple’s shares down more than 2 per cent on Thursday, to $90.32, or 32 per cent below the peak they hit almost exactly a year ago. The retreat left Apple’s market capitalisation at $494.7bn. That was only some $300m above that of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. www.ft.com

Trump and GOP leaders bury hatchet

WEEKEND EDITION, MAY 6-8, 2016

Republican presumptive nominee for President Donald Trump yesterday moved to bury the hatchet with his party leaders with ameeting in the capital Washington DC. Trump, who built a campaign on lambasting Republican elites, Thursday came to the citadel of the political establishment, Capitol Hill, for a summit with House Speaker Paul Ryan and other party leaders designed to halt the GOP’s self-immolation. From the moment the billionaire’s Boeing 757 rolled to a stop to the moment when it lifted into the steel gray skies over Ronald Reagan National Airport nearly six hours later, he whipped up an extraordinary spectacle -- perhaps a taste of what is to come if he is elected president. It was a day, as CNN’s Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta put it, that was about Republicans beginning to build a “tent big enough for the circus that you have seen roll into town.” The Capitol Dome -- glistening white in its newly restored state -- has known generations of political drama but can rarely have witnessed such a media carnival-- as GOP leaders sat down to talk a truce with the ringleader of their rebellious grassroots. At the end of the day, there was a general feeling that after the recriminations of a bitter primary season -- things had gone rather better than many people expected. “While we were honest about our few differences, we recognize that there are also many important areas of common

ground,” Ryan and Trump said after their meeting -- which lacked a gripand-grin photo-op but was described by both sides as a good start. “We will be having additional discussions, but remain confident there’s a great opportunity to unify our party and win this fall, and we are totally committed to working together to achieve that goal.” The statement included a concession to Trump -- a recognition that he had brought millions of new voters into the Republican fold. But it also inadvertently hinted at the distance that still remains when the statement talked about unification of the party -- a word more often employed to refer to mending nations carved in two by manmade walls, like the Koreas or Cold War-era Germany. Still, one senator told CNN’s Manu Raju that the meetings had gone well and that the voluble billionaire let others do the talking. “They actually kind of liked him,” the senator said, who asked not to be on the record. There was one significant piece missing from the day of Republican healing — a formal endorsement of Trump by Ryan. But the speaker left the impression that such a step could happen if followup meetings designed to drill into the “weeds” of policy differences between the two men go well. Trump and Ryan had raised the stakes for the talks themselves -- especially after the Speaker last week said in a bombshell CNN interview that he

Donald Trump at an earlier campaign rally. He yesterday met top Republican party leaders to forge a united front ahead of elections in November.

was not ready to endorse the fiery presumptive GOP nominee, who later complained that he was blindsided. For once, Trump, though the center of attention, did not contribute to the political cacophony himself, contenting himself with the Ryan statement and a few Tweets.

Reporters only glimpsed him fleetingly, as he stepped out of his Secret Service SUV to offer his distinctive gesture: a wave from his much-commented-upon hands becomes a thumbs up. “Great day in D.C. with @SpeakerRyan and Republican leadership. Things working out really well! #Trump2016,”

the presumptive nominee tweeted as his jet taxied to the runway as he left town. Mr. Trump came to Washington followed by a huge media pack, and his visit recalled the wall-to-wall coverage last seen when Pope Francis was in town last year.

Envoys walk-out of Museveni swearing in ceremony

President Museveni during his inauguration at Kololo grounds in Kampala yesterday.

Western delegations attending the inauguration of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni have walked out of the ceremony in protest. US, European and Canadian diplomats left abruptly when Mr Museveni made disparaging comments about the International Criminal Court (ICC). The US state department said they had also objected to the presence of Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir at the ceremony. Mr Bashir is wanted by the ICC on charges of genocide. Thursday’s inauguration - the fifth since Mr Museveni took power in 1986 - was attended by leaders from Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In his address, Mr Museveni described the ICC as “a bunch of useless people” and said he no longer supported it. State department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said: “In response to President Bashir’s presence and President Museveni’s remarks, the US delegation, along with representatives of the EU countries and Canada, departed the inauguration ceremonies to demonstrate our objections.” “We believe that walking out in protest is an appropriate reaction to a head of state mocking efforts to ensure accountability for victims of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.” Ms Trudeau said that was especially the case as Uganda was committed to accountability as a party to the Rome statute, which established the ICC. The Hague-based court has issued international warrants in 2009 and 2010 for Mr Bashir’s arrest on charges of genocide for atrocities in Sudan’s western Darfur region. Correspondents say that states in theory have a legal duty to arrest ICC suspects on their territory, but African leaders are increasingly doubtful of its authority.

Charity in drive to offer basic income to 16,000 poor Kenyans GiveDirectly, a non-profit organization operating in Kenya and Uganda has announced plans to donate cash to over 16,000 Kenyans living in extreme poverty for the next 10 years, the group has said. More than 6,000 beneficiaries, according to GiveDirectly co-founder Michel Faye, will receive approximately Sh70 to Sh110 a day through mobile money transfer services. The amount, according to Faye, is just enough to make them survive since most of the beneficiaries are currently living on less than Sh65 a day. For its pilot programme, the charity will randomly select villages in Kenya and give residents a basic income for at least a decade. Faye said an extra 10,000 people will receive some form of cash transfer as well. Faye has reiterated that the initiative has huge benefits and has come at the right time when UN agencies, governments and the private sector are discussing ways of leveraging aid at World Humanitarian Summit. “Cash transfers are one of the most effective methods of development intervention,” Faye told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “You don’t need to do anything to receive them. State pushes for local production to make fertiliser affordable

Kenya is on the verge of encouraging local production and blending of fertiliser to help cut import costs and reduce subsidies needed to make fertiliser affordable for farmers. Official data reveal that farming accounts for a quarter of Kenya’s annual economic output, but the high cost of fertilisers means farmers who cannot afford the vital commodity rely on subsidies or avoid using them, which hurts output. Kenya’s Agriculture Cabinet secretary Willy Bett said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Kigali that the government of Kenya, spent more than 16 billion shillings ($159 million) to subsidise fertiliser in the last three years. “The next step now is to manufacture fertiliser,” he said, adding production of fertiliser could start in 2020 once the country starts production of hydrocarbons. Kenya is seeking to develop oil reserves found in recent years, and the minister also pointed to some gas finds. Ammonia for fertiliser can be produced from hydrocarbon feedstocks, such as natural gas and oil. Toyota Tsusho is already putting up a fertiliser blending plant in the western town of Eldoret, CS Bett added. High input costs have turned some farmers away from export crops such as coffee. The CS said the government was encouraging farmers to create unions and cooperatives that could group together to buy fertilisers in bulk, reducing costs for individuals. kevin_x254

Bidco Africa Ltd to install 3,920 solar panels in clean energy bid

Leading consumer goods manufacturer Bidco Africa Limited has announced plans to implement the largest corporate solar project in the country. The edible oils, fats and hygiene care products manufacturer will install 3,920 solar panels at its Thika based Head Quarters replacing over 12,500 square metres of roofing. This is in a move that will make the company energy independent and boost its environmental friendliness. “We have always wanted to explore solar but the economics never fell into place until now. We have plenty of rooftop space available and this project can put our energy situation in our own hands, at an affordable price, which is a fantastic position to be in,” Bidco CEO Vimal Shah revealed. Bidco has partnered with Astonfield Solar, the leading industrial solar energy solutions provider in the sub-saharan and based in Nairobi to implement the project. The 1.2MWp capacity project will generate over 1.8m Kilowatt hours and deliver power at half the grid cost saving Bidco about Sh650 million over its 25 year life cycle. The company presently produces 70 per cent of its own power needs through co-generation using sawdust, macadamia husks and other agricultural waste. ‘The beauty of this is the environmental aspect. Green growth is a priority for us and this project moves us towards the environmental sustainability levels we have always aspired to as a business,” Mr. Vimal Shah continued. Construction is expected to commence from June and will take about 6 months to be completed. The project will create

about 200 new jobs. ‘This is a ground breaking project for the manufacturing industry in Kenya and East Africa. We were able to provide BIDCO Africa with a unique solar power solution that saves money and also reduces their carbon footprint which

is in line with BIDCO Africa’s green ambitions,” said Ameet Shah, CEO of Astonfield Solar commenting on the project. Established in 1985, Bidco Africa Ltd is Kenya and East Africa’s leading manufacturers and home to some of

Kenya’s most famous and loved brands such as Kimbo, Elianto, Golden Fry, Chipsy, Biddy’s, Gaea, Powerboy and Gental. The company has manufacturing units in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and a footprint in 16 countries across Africa. kevin_x254

Weak shilling wreaks havoc on Kenyan stock market The weakening trend of the Kenya Shilling this year has impacted foreign investor appetite to hold or acquire NSE listed stocks. According to a report from financial services group, Old Mutual, volatility is expected to fall and the market should stabilize in due course, particularly when the exchange rate becomes stable. The performance of bonds has been negatively impacted by the sharp rise in bond yields impacting bond valuations, Old Mutual told X News during an exchange this morning. The stock market has also been under pressure over the last few months as some foreign sellers have been reducing their investments in frontier markets.

Sh2.5 billion Vienna Court office attracts foreign investment as complex bags LEED gold precertification Vienna Court, a Grade A, low-rise office complex developed by PDM Holdings, is attracting foreign investment as international capitalists continue to seek viable and preferred working space across the country. According to PDM, the Sh2.5 billion project, set to be completed by September 2016, is already attracting a great deal of interest from multinationals and local blue chip companies that appreciate a high quality functional space built to international standards and prioritize on environmental conservation and sustainability efforts. The Vienna Court complex recently won the highly-coveted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold pre-certification, making it one of the few commercial buildings in East Africa to attain the mark of quality and achievement in green building at international standards. According to Mr. Richard Fedrizzi, CEO & Founding Chairman of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Vienna court received the

BIZ BRIEFS

award for incorporating building designs that are going to help tenants to be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. Studies indicate that the annual utilities cost per employee in green facilities is $675.26 (Sh68,000) lower than in nongreen facilities. “By setting goals and intentions to incorporate green features, enhancing occupants’ health, reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation, Vienna Court will serve as a model for future high performance green development in the region,” said Mr. Ngure Gideon, Marketing Manager PDM Holdings. Located along State House Crescent, Vienna Court is attuned to modern sustainable development features which include a landscaped garden, central courtyard, provisions for rainwater harvesting, balconies for solar shading, solar control glass, priority parking for energy efficient cars and bicycle storage facilities. In addition, all office spaces have passive ventilation, and access to

highly efficient central air conditioning infrastructure. Despite the high land prices in Upper Hill, Vienna Court has dedicated approximately 0.25 acres to green areas and a central mature garden. PDM Holdings in its commitment to environmental conservation went to extremes to preserve the existing indigenous garden by excavating around it and designing the building around it. The company also engaged international landscape architect Mr. S. Gary, Lead Architect Leonard Design Architect(LDA), (who is also the designer of Garden City in Nairobi, Dubai World Trade Centre among others) to ensure the garden is not tampered with and incorporates new foliage. “A high performing and energy efficient building greatly affects a client’s decision about purchasing or renting a property. LEED-certified buildings have proven to have lower operating costs and better indoor and outdoor environmental quality and are more attractive to a

growing group of corporate, public and individual tenants,” said Mr. Ngure. According to Mr. Ngure, Vienna Court is designed to help ensure reduced cost of lighting and air-conditioning, savings which are passed on to the tenants, while the provision of bicycle and priority parking bays for energy efficient cars helps reduce pollution and exposure to greenhouse gases by encouraging tenants to cycle and use energy efficient cars. A research by USGBC reports that, LEED-certified buildings have been proven to use 25 per cent less energy and a 19 per cent reduction in aggregate operational costs in comparison to noncertified buildings. “To ensure our tenants enjoy seamless operation, and reduce costs of operation, we have installed building automated management system (BMS) which intelligently monitors units like fuel tank levels, water tank levels and common area lighting switching them off when left running or idle.” said Mr. Ngure. Local communities must be involved in infrastructure development at every step of the way, policy makers at the 26th annual World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa in Kigali, Rwanda have said. Speaking at the forum, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta emphasized the need to enhance intra Africa trade as a sure way to grow African economies. South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who met with Kenyatta on the side-lines of WEF Africa, has reiterated that infrastructure is for the betterment of people’s lives, stating that it is important that they “feel a sense of ownership by being given full opportunity to benefit from the construction and from eventual delivery.”

Congratulations on the nomination Thank you. It’s a real blessing. Which other artists are you giving your support to during this round of the Groove Awards? Everybody! Yes, but who in particular do you think deserves an honourable mention? I love everybody and everybody deserves to be in the position they are in and everybody deserves to win. Daddy Owen though has come a long way and the competition with the girls is stiff because every one of them is so good at what they do and they are all

so talented. We know you live by The Word but would you ever consider doing a song with a secular artist like other Gospel artists have been known to do? [Firmly] No. What do you think of your music playing in clubs? My message is about bringing people closer to God. Even though it sounds like it might be an unexpected or unlikely setting for Gospel music to be playing, at the end of the day if it brings even one person closer to God then I know I’m living my purpose.

Bongo flavor stars AY and Mwana FA may get up to Tzsh 2billion (Ksh 100m) from mobile network provider Tigo after a court ruled in their favor in a copyright row. The two artistes, had sued Tigo for using their music as caller tunes without their consent. The award was granted by Ilala senior resident magistrate Juma Hassan after a four year back and forth court process. The two will also receive a further Tzsh 25 million in general damages. ROBERT ALAI

The Kenyan Gospel music has a come a long way since it started getting airplay on radio. What are the major changes you have witnessed since starting out? It really has. For one there’s more Gospel music appreciation by the public than there used to be in the past. Through award shows and even just with their music playing on radio and TV, Gospel artists are being given a forum to relay their message. Not only that but there is also a lot more support by corporates and other organisations which is something that wasn’t very common long ago.

Blogger says Jacob Juma was active on Whatsapp way after 10pm

Controversial blogger Robert Alai has revealed that business man Jacob Juma did not die at around 10 pm as per officials. The blogger says Jacob Juma was active on Whatsapp beyond 10pm on the night of his death and that he most probably was killed way after midnight. Technology in the recent past has made it quite easy to tell when a user of a social media application last used an app, and this could go a long way in revealing when, who and what was discussed.

Is there any message you would like to pass to your fans, something you’d like them to know? They should love Christ. They can go out, they can meet people and they can bring people closer to God. There is no peace in the things of this world, peace is only with God. People should strive to know Christ, just going to church isn’t enough. They should purpose to never give up. A lot of challenges may come on your path but consistency is important if you want to achieve your dreams. @christine_x254

Kenya in fresh Anti-Doping crisis WEEKEND EDITION, MAY 13-15, 2016

Kenya’s participation at the August’s Olympic Games in Rio now hangs in the balance after it was declared in breach of global anti-doping rules. The surprise move by the World AntiDoping Agency (Wada) leaves some of the world’s top athletes at risk of missing out in Brazil. Kenya is one of the major forces in world athletics but has already missed two Wada deadlines to show it is tackling cheating in the sport. Wada’s compliance committee yesterday ruled Kenya “non-compliant” when its board met in Montreal, in the US , citing issues with anti-doping legislation. The recommendation needs to be ratified by the Wada board. After a series of drugs and corruption scandals, Kenya had been warned to comply with Wada’s rules or face sanctions. And last month, Kenya finally passed the legislation that created a new national anti-doping agency, with President Uhuru Kenyatta personally driving the new law through. It was widely assumed that the measure would satisfy Wada. And the declaration now leaves the country on the brink of missing out on a major event. “It will be a sad situation if the is the

case. We worked on all issues that Wada raised,” Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei said in reaction to the news yesterday. MP David Were who chairs of the Kenya parliament sports and welfare committee which developed the antidoping bill, said Kenya will appeal the decision. He said he was “shocked” by the decision, adding “we have met all the requirements” and claiming the bill’s proposals were “stringent enough”. It will now be up to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to decide whether to ban Kenyan athletes from the Rio Games or any other competitions. They could come under pressure to do so, amid an unprecedented doping crisis and mounting concern over the country’s lack of action against cheating. The Olympic participation of another powerhouse athletics nation - Russia is already in doubt. In November, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) banned the country’s track and field athletes from international competition following allegations of systemic state-sponsored cheating. The IAAF, which governs world athletics, will decide on Russia’s

possible reinstatement in Vienna on 17 June. Kenya is dominant at distance running, winning 11 medals at London 2012 and topping the table at the World Championships in Beijing last year with seven golds. But the country has become mired in doping and bribery allegations, with more than 40 of its athletes failing drugs tests since 2011. “It is worrying and painful to remember the sacrifice, perseverance and dedication put towards achieving the success and ultimate goal, World Javelin Champion Julius Yego said. In November, former Wada president Dick Pound said it was “pretty clear that there are a lot of performanceenhancing drugs being used” in Kenya. In February, the BBC revealed Kenya had missed a deadline to pass a law establishing a new national anti-doping agency so that more testing could take place. Wada placed it on a ‘watch-list’ of nations at risk of breaching its code and gave it until 5 April to comply, with IAAF president Lord Coe threatening Kenya with a ban if it did not pass the bill into law. Kenya missed that second deadline, too, but was then given until 12 May to make its national agency operational.

Last month, Kenya finally passed the crucial legislation. In fact, it went further than Wada had requested by criminalising doping and threatening cheats with prison sentences. At the time, President Kenyatta said he was confident Wada would “look upon the passage of our anti-doping law favourably”. That view was echoed by some of Kenya’s top athletes, who feared they might be thrown out of the Rio Olympics if the law was not passed. “That’s what Wada was waiting for in Kenya, so we are safe,” London Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge said.

However, it is understood Wada officials are not happy they were not informed of certain key amendments to the legislation. Declaring Kenya non-compliant will be seen as a sign that the organisation is finally getting tough with countries that flout their rules. In the last few weeks, it has suspended national anti-doping laboratories in Moscow, Beijing, Lisbon and Bloemfontein, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of drugs-testing in the build-up to Rio. This week, Wada also opened an investigation into allegations of Russian doping at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

Ibrahimovic to leave PSG this summer Zlatan Ibrahimovic will leave Paris St-Germain at the end of the season. The 34-year-old Sweden striker’s contract with the French champions expires in the summer, and he has been linked with Manchester United, Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan. “I am very proud,” he said. “I came like a king, I leave like a legend but I will be back.” PSG said Ibrahimovic leaves as “the greatest striker and one of the very best players in the club’s history”. Ibrahimovic is the club’s record goalscorer despite only joining the club in 2012, his 152 goals coming in 178 appearances. PSG have won Ligue 1 in every season Ibrahimovic has been at the club, wrapping up the title this season with two months to spare. “I loved every day I spent here,” said Ibrahimovic, who has won league titles with six different clubs. “Paris St-Germain has become a star club in the world and I played a key role moving it forward. It is now the right time for me to take a different path.” PSG host Nantes in Ligue 1 on Saturday before meeting Marseille in the French Cup final on 21 May. An agreement is in place for Ibrahimovic to return to the club at the end of his playing career, with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi saying he is “looking forward to the prospect of working with him again”. Ibrahimovic finished as top scorer in France in 201213 and 2013-14, and leads Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette by 15 goals this season. He has also been included in the Ligue 1 team of the year in all of his four seasons in France. Meanwhile Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante

has been named in the France squad for their home European Championship. The 25-year-old, who has impressed in the Foxes’ title-winning campaign, made his international debut against the Netherlands in March. He is one of 10 Premier League players selected by manager Didier Deschamps. But in-form forward Hatem ben Arfa and Mathieu Valbuena, who was involved in a sex-tape scandal with international team-mate Karim Benzema, are left out. Real Madrid striker Benzema is being investigated for his part in an alleged plot to blackmail Valbuena and had already been told he would be left out. Valbuena has struggled for Lyon this season, but Ben Arfa has scored 17 goals in 33 Ligue 1 matches for Nice. Ousmane Dembele, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Rennes on Thursday, is another forward to miss out as Deschamps chose Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and Dimitri Payet of West Ham in a total of six attacking players.
